Stevie Bell is back to solve a murder in Nine Liars by Maureen Johnson. "Senior year at Ellingham - Stevie is adrift. Her boyfriend, David, is in London. Her friends are concentrating on college applications. She's just solved a big case and now there's nothing to distract her. David invites her and her friends to London to do a two-week study abroad. Shortly after they arrive, David's friend, Izzy, tells them about a double-murder from 1995 that her aunt knew about. Nine friends went out to a country estate for the weekend, but only seven came back. Was it a burglary gone wrong? Or is someone still lying? " This story spends a lot of time in Stevie's head. She's worried about life, love and future. Her hoodie choices are interesting and hilarious. It's nice to be in a different location like London and to visit a creepy mansion in the countryside. Johnson makes the Nine a group you want to hang out with (but not too long - too much for me) There are secrets and more deaths. You never know until the reveal who the killer is. There were a couple of clues at the beginning so if you pay attention you might catch something. This can be read as a stand-alone. There are references to previous books but not much is given away if you haven't read them. Not a fan of the very end. Stevie deserves better. A nice YA crime fiction story from Johnson. First post of the year!! Woo!! The Box in the Woods is a stand alone sequel to Maureen Johnson’s Truly Devious series. The book picks up where the Truly Devious series leaves off. It’s summer vacation and Stevie is recruited to solve a cold case from 1978 at a summer camp in the idyllic town of Barlow Corners. I really enjoyed this one off mystery and revisiting Stevie and friends. I really love the Truly Devious series. Maureen Johnson knows how to write a fast paced gripping mystery. Esa era una de las partes más importantes de ser detective: no perder de vista el arma.» La mano en la pared (Maureen Johnson) 🕵️‍♀️ Esta tercera parte, como toda la trilogía, me ha gustado mucho. Es una historia muy entretenida, con una gran dosis de misterio, mezclada con relaciones personales, además entre adolescentes, con lo que todo ello conlleva en cuanto a dudas, miedos y sentimientos. Además de tratar el tema de la ansiedad de la mano de la protagonista, lo que me parece muy acertado, porque es algo que existe y que es bueno representar en una historia que realmente no va sobre eso. También me ha gustado mucho cómo se resuelve, las sorpresas que nos llevamos y el ir descubriéndolo todo, porque creo que está muy bien conseguido. Stevie es un personaje muy inteligente, que lucha por lo que quiere, aunque se burlen de ella o la menosprecien por ello, y el resto lo mismo, dejándonos ver lo complicado que es a veces cumplir las expectativas que el resto tiene de nosotros, como le ocurre a Nate y su libro. Es un thriller que nos ofrece ciertas dosis de romance, sin ser lo más importante ni caer demasiado en ello, y que a mí es una de las cosas que más me ha gustado, lo reconozco, y que os recomiendo, obviamente, igual que hice con los dos anteriores. Truly Devious is the first book in a buzzy series from Maureen Johnson. “Stevie Bell loves True Crime. She heads to Ellingham Academy hoping to solve a famous cold case. In the 30s, the founder’s wife and daughter were kidnapped. Ransom was paid but they were never returned. Stevie hopes to find the answer but now death has visited the campus again.” Stevie is a great character. Her observations and comments are hilarious. This is a dual timeline story going back and forth between the present and the events surrounding the kidnapping. Johnson has an easy-to-read writing style with great pace. My only issue with this book is that there is no resolution on most of the story and multiple cliffhangers. 😩 Not a fan of that. On to the next one.
