i keep seeing so much smt5 stuff on my dash so i think it’s a good time to express how i really really hope aogami isn’t done dirty in vengeance
ik not all stories need a happy ending and smt knows that well but there’s a right way to do it and god given how the protagonist and aogami’s relationship actually was during the game it made true neutral so much worse
so it’s ok for all the other human characters to die or continue existing with their demon soulmate but not the protag-
seriously though it’s harming the themes of 5 when tne already has a bunch of thematic flaws
there’s so much of the game that convinces you not to go through with tne which is fine!! it makes sense why the game would punish you emotionally for it. but having the ending bias most mainline games have (aka make it super obvious what ending they want you to go with by not putting as much or straight up no effort into the other endings) it makes it obvious this was the ending being pushed when it shouldn’t have been. that’s why it pisses me off so much—you either shoot for tne or get a half baked ending monologue. it’s extra sad since aogami’s goodbye leaves you feeling like shit but considering apparently this is the ending that matters, you’re ultimately forced to go with it so it doesn’t have the right impact.
i will defend 5 on a gameplay standpoint and a thematic standpoint but atlus i’m begging you just because da’at’s technically a post apocalyptic setting and tokyo is in the matrix does not mean everyone is fair game to just kill or write off and i am desperate for the other endings to put in real effort so tne feels more like an actual proper ending for the one guy who wants to do the equivalent of undertale’s genocide route.

Maple’s Blood AU~
A au built on the idea of Mapleshade never having her kits true sire found out, raising them as Birchface’s children with a whole support network of cats willing to do anything to help the lost warriors blood.
||||| Warning Really Long Post |||||
So Maple raises her kits who are named Petalkit (nod to Flowerpaw), Pinekit (for Birch, canon Patchkit), and Perchkit (after their real river blood, canon Larchkit). They are helped by their “aunt” Frecklewish the whole time who is so devoted she’s practically another mentor and guardian their whole life. Oakstar is there to make sure their always the most fed, safe, and warm. And Ravenwing who keeps a eye on them to see if they present any special Starclan based skills as the kits of a barley dead cat.
When he got the three reeds sign he instead took it as a sign that the new kits were a blown in blessing to them, a new tool and gift. The final remnants of the beloved Birchface.
In life Birchface was always a light in camp. He was incredibly kind, funny, helpful, and wise for his youth. He always gave any cat advice and was seen as a gift in the dark times. His death along with his apprentices really hit the clan hard especially his family who’d grown to rely on him a lot. Most effected was his twin sister Frecklewish. The two always did have a bond that No one thought could ever break, but no one expected death would sever it.
Once Mapleshade announced herself as expecting with no stated sire Frecklewish bounced forward and asked if maybe they were her brothers. And seeing the possibility of aligning her kits with the leader’s line as well as in a heavily protected spot as the widow of a dead warrior she took it. She would raise her kits to honor their blood above all and make sure they felt the fiery rage that she did when she gazed at the river lands. Those fishy fools wouldn’t except her blood to curse their pools for generations. But she planned for it to seep in and never come out.
When born they were named after the two lost lives and a fish. When asked why a fish name Maple said it was because her little son would grow to take over the rivers that took their father. And so they did.
Petalkit was a sassy little cat that held her siblings together. A lot of her real father’s charism in her words even as a kit. She’d become Petalpaw with the good minded Bloomheart as her mentor. Eventually named Petalfreckle after her close auntie and for the cute little spots across her face.
Pinekit was raised as the cat to hold his father’s legacy the most and he tried really hard to hold it up. But it was a lot, he became rather anxious, shy, and stuttery. Though when he trusted in himself he was a force. He became Pinepaw under Frecklewish herself and named Pineheart for his strong wills even if they could be a bit shaky.
And Perchkit was a real troublemaker always running off and doing things he wasn’t supposed to. He made it to training but to try and show off he attempted to catch a fish off the bridge, except just there was a fierce water beast known as the Wells Catfish which drowned him. His body pulled out by a Riverclan patrol with his real father in its ranks. Both his siblings took his death hard with Pine always having a fear of water and Petal growing a massive anger towards Riverclan.
The curse of a river beast would grow here especially in Thunderclan that warned that if a cat not knowledgeable enough about the river’s tries to test their waters the beast will get them. And if they somehow escape their cursed with a path that will always lead them back to the water until their eventual death.
Pineheart (Fusion of Patchkit and Pinestar) would go on to have a pretty rocky life. His mother was always whispering him to fight against their brother’s death. Their sister constantly toying with every cat. Their only comfort was his aunt who just seemed to get them. And then Frecklewish died, a terrible accident near a snake nest. Her whole gruesome death spent blinded but surrounded by loved ones, her last words as she looked into his face “B-Birchface?”. He never really recovered after that.
Frecklewish lived to when the kits where made warriors but it was here that while doing a solo patrol she was pulled aside by Appledusk and told about his relationship with Mapleshade. While she wouldn’t ever normally believe that slimy tom she can’t help but see him in little Petalfreckle or have some suspicions around her dear Perchpaw’s death. She confronted Mapleshade about it and Maple spilled the beans. Obviously she was horrified and was going to tell everyone and Maple couldn’t have that, she lured her to the snake nest by pretending to of been bitten only to have Freckle get attacked by one of those adders. Even though Maple lied to her the sweet cat couldn’t just let her die.. sadly she wouldn’t live because of her strong loyalty
Petalfreckle particularly became much bigger as a cat. While her brother was looked on as the spitting image of their “father” Petal had the mindset of a great cat. Oakstar planned for her to be his next deputy and she even helped with the kitten stealing raids.
It was from one of these raids where both siblings went on that she died, in a rebellion against the clan cats stealing their kits a ton of strays from the streets fought back (origin of Bloodclan). Her whole throat torn open, suffocating on her own blood.
Now that his prodigal granddaughter was dead Oakstar snatched up Pineheart and made him fast train Sunpaw (Sunfall) so he could be his deputy. While most cats weren’t sure about Pine being deputy they couldn’t argue against their older leader. Only 6 moons into his deputyship did Oakstar die forcing him into leadership far too soon.
And it was a rocky leadership filled with famine, unrest, and almost even civil war. To try and ease the peace between the cats him and his friend Leopardfoot decided they both wanted a legacy and their kits could ease the clans mixed opinions on him and her as a loner who joined. But not even his litter could be good. One kit fading away not even a week after birth and the other two small, especially his little black kitten. He named them Tigerkit and Leopardkit for strength in hopes that’d help, plus it would carry on their dame’s name.
Tigerkit was a little fluffy tom with banded stripes and sharp claws, his small eyes a bright amber. Leopardkit was even smaller with black fur and a white paw it’s eyes light blue.
Their kits were barley into apprenticeship when Leopardpaw went missing, never seen again. Tigerpaw claimed that he’d seen his sibling hanging out around the twolegplace so that must been where he went, it always was small so maybe it thought the softer life of a kittypet would be easier. Leopardfoot was horrified and grew depressed while Pinestar grew angry and sad. Anger at his ancestors for making his life so filled with death. One night as he screamed at the stars he received a message about his true parentage, a apple with maple leaves around it three little apple seeds on the ground before him. This is how he knew the truth of his parentage. He wasn’t the son of the cat everyone thought he was. He was the kit of a terrible river warrior that killed his supposed father!
Angered even more now he couldn’t bear to lie to his only son for his whole life. After talking with his star speaker (Starclan gifted healer aka the great Goosefeather) he told his son the truth. Tigerpaw never looked at him the same after. The stone to shoot down the sparrow was Goosefeather receiving a prophecy of his son being two sided, his fate either of new blood or bloodshed. Not being able to take it anymore he ran. Pinestar left to try and find his lost kit and live a life much kinder. Luckily he was picked up by a kind twoleg who took care of him for the rest of his life. Pine never really found the kit he lost but he swore when he saw those alley cats he saw a cat with the same brilliant white foot. But that couldn’t be his dear Leoaprdpaw could it? Only if he knew.
Sunstar would run after but without any lives as Pine still had his and Starclan couldn’t give lives that were still in play. His reign was quick and gone soon. Taken up by the strong Bluestar who ruled much longer, a fate similar to Pinestar’s except she never fled.
Tigerclaw was expected to be her successor but his power and anger got too much as he tried to strip her of her lives once learning of her kits with a river cat. While he took one he couldn’t get them all and was chased away. But he wouldn’t die all alone. He became the leader of Shadowclan, almost completely took over Riverclan, and had the chance to forever change the clans. Until that cat with a white paw so bright tore him head to tail. The last thing he would hear would have made his stomach turn if he hadn’t already spilled his guts. The black cat and his killer whispered “Goodbye brother”.
The curse of the siblings would continue on.
To Brambleclaw and Tawnypelt, Hawkfrost and Mothwing, Tigerheart and Dawnpelt, all the way down to Lightleap and Shadowsight.
A rather noticeable trend of these pairs having had a third that drowned or died in a horrible way (Flametail in the lake, Tadpole in the flood)

i keep thinking about how olive green's whole murder plan is also a kind of test.
because she didn't know her fiance was murdered. she didn't really consider the possibility of murder until she heard soseki talking about his gas leak. perhaps she suspected something beforehand- "i'm going to buy strychnine" is a pretty big jump to make from "my fiance died in an accident"- but if she hadn't overheard soseki, she probably would have accepted the explanation that duncan's death was an accident, and left it at that.
she wasn't sure. she was setting up a plan to murder a man and she still wasn't sure if duncan's death was an accident or not.
like, she sends the letter to william shamspeare, but the letter specifically says, "i have information regarding duncan ross's death." if shamspeare hadn't been involved, he might not have heeded the letter- he might have brought it to the police, or the landlord, or just ignored it. he might not have left his apartment at all.
he does, though. and when she goes to briar road, his flat is empty. but that's not confirmation- maybe he was scared he'd be hurt if he didn't follow the instructions, or maybe he didn't know what else to do. she doesn't know for sure.
so she executes a murder plan that will only kill him if she's right.
she wanted the truth. but she wanted revenge, too, for her and for duncan, and the two are inextricably linked- the crime committed against her, and the crime she committed in order to know what had happened. she set it up so that her revenge would give her the truth- if shamspeare died, then she knew she was right.
but then she fails. she loses both: shamspeare survives, and she now knows the truth but she's made it unusable. she can't come forward with the knowledge that her fiance was killed, because the only way she can prove she knows that is to admit to her own attempted murder- and who will believe her then?
(and she and duncan are poor. she's not wealthy enough for the police to care- what are the chances that they would have discovered her murder, thrown her in prison, and stopped there? her murder was a lot more clear-cut than shamspeare's, so it's likely that her crime would be discovered first, and no one is going to bother investigating the claims of a poor woman already arrested for murder.)
we've seen people commit murder in the name of vengeance before. ashley graydon does it in 1-5, and we'll see it again with enoch drebber in 2-3. but i think olive green is the first person we see to tie truth and vengeance together- to make "getting revenge for the loss of a loved one" and "finding the truth behind the loss of her loved one" one and the same. and it backfires on her, in the end- but it was the only way she could see forward, to actually find closure for what she'd lost.
(hey, kazuma. remind you of anyone?)

the reason it bothers me so much when people say "namor killed shuri's mom" is because that statement is built upon so many assumptions it ends up presenting a false dichotomy and almost completely ignores the characters and the messages in this film
"namor killed shuri's mom" implies that namor, aka the villain, intended to kill the queen, aka the victim. how did he do it? he threw a water bomb at her, and she drowned. end of story. but a recurring theme in this movie is that the how is never as important as the why
we've been following shuri's arc since the beginning of this film, she's going through immense grief, she lost a significant member of her family, and her mother is the only person who she has left, the only person who truly understands her. so when she loses her last pillar of support, she is enraged, and her anger is justified. we empathise with her, when she says she wants to burn the world, when she feels abandoned by her entire family in the ancestral plane, when she says "is my mother's life not worth eternal war?" we believe her when she says namor killed her mother
but we don't get to see the story through namor's perspective, all we have is bits and pieces of information about who the talokanil are based on their introduction as sirens and warriors and their history through namor's own words. but when you begin putting the pieces of the puzzle together you realise just how human the talokanil are. i've spoken before about how envious namor must be of wakanda because of the privilege they hold over talokan. and because the talokanil have faced a lot more adversity than wakanda could ever imagine, they are always prepared for war. they are not oblivious to the truth. colonisation is not a thing of the past. so they have two main motivations, and namor needs to uphold these laws by any and all means necessary: 1) protect their people and resources, and 2) remain hidden
but despite namor's underlying resentment towards wakanda, despite him having more soldiers than wakanda has blades of grass, the first thing he offers them is an alliance. he offers them trust. he shares his story, his land, his people with shuri. he offers her an explanation for his intentions, and speaks to shuri in hopes that she can understand him. and what does shuri do with this gracious offering? she tramples all over it. she betrays his trust, shatters his last ray of hope
we know that shuri tried to stop nakia, asked for her kimoyo beads, tried to save the talokanil guard till the very last moment, knew her death would be seen as an act of war. but namor doesn't see any of it. namor only knows that he failed. he lost his child. to a god, everyone of his children are equal. losing one doesn't hurt any less than losing any more. but his hope blinded him into compromising both of the two laws he was obligated to maintain. so all of the pain, the loss, the grief, and the envy he was repressing this whole time bubbles up to the surface and he thinks to himself, "is my child's life not worth eternal war?"
so namor gives up on his ideas of alliance, attacks wakanda, and intends to kill the scientist. make up for his wrongs by carrying out his initial plan. consumed by vengeance he obliterates everything blocking his path, finds the scientist, sees the queen trying to protect her, doesn't care, and attacks them both
the queen is not a victim. the queen is a saviour. when she first hears about the talokanil attacks she tries to protect shuri by trying to confine her in her lab. then she uses her entire body to shield riri, yells at her to escape but when riri doesn't, she sacrifices herself to prevent her from drowning
and what has shuri been doing this whole time apart from hiding in her lab and rejecting every one of her mother's attempts to reach out to her? she knows that war is coming yet does not prepare reinforcements for the queen. in fact the last thing she does before she loses her mother is hang up on her. but none of these actions seem evil to us. they make sense, we understand her, we get why. she was grieving
but so was namor. wasn't namor grieving too? for more than 500 years?
even killmonger, with all his rage, has the clarity to see what shuri doesn't, that the situation isn't as black and white as it seems. when shuri says "namor killed my mother", he warns shuri against dishonouring her mother by ignoring her voluntary act of sacrifice and labelling her a victim, dying at the hands of a monster, all in vain. he acknowledges queen ramonda's sacrifice, and drive's shuri to avenge her mother's wrongful death. and shuri listens to him, and continues on the cycle of violence. namor attacked wakanda? shuri attacks talokan. eye for an eye
shuri didn't intend to kill the talokanil guard and escape, she intended to come up with a peaceful resolution. namor didn't intend to kill the queen, he intended to ally with wakanda. intentions, motivations, reasons why people do what they do, all of it matters. they are what separate humans from monsters. it's easy to see someone as the hero and the other as the villain when you understand only one side. but it's never that simple, is it?
