oh my fucking god i feel. SO stupid rn at How i didnt make the (super sane very normal just absolutely. Yes. Surely) connection earlier but uhh

so anyway im now like 89% certain that whatever the "traces" of the narwhal that remain on ajax and facilitate their (ever-growing) innate connection are like. an actually fundamental aspect of it (them?) more or less.

why? because if you consider its pov just for a moment. the narwhal was literally about to depart teyvat for good. it had nearly finished consuming the primordial sea and preparing to breach surface to finish the job by eating the french for the leftovers their human bodies were made from. its an interstellar voyager it does not linger on planets it devours. it goes glug glug and it leaves.

and like if it wasnt for traveler intervening its confirmed through narzissenkreuz and renes world formula that teyvat wouldve just been destroyed. no one could have stopped the narwhal not neuvillette not focalors not anyone.

so what was the one other thing it did right before going for that french brunch? calling for ajax. getting them reunited in the primordial sea. like all the possible implications aside bc theres many different ways to speculate on the exact reasons why and the nature of that link. the point remains.

like the narwhal is about to fucking Dip from this cringe planet and whatever part of it that ajax carries within himself his narwhal Absolutely wanted to be reunited with. what the fuck am i supposed to read from that. hoyo???????!??! answers?!?!?!

and its not only the calling from the narwhal side itself either bc this is ALL coinciding with the growth of a 'restless power' within ajax and his vision malfunctioning (the things celestia is literally confirmed to harvest energy thru to repair its damaged authority) and his connection with the narwhal reaching an actual conscious level (arguably subconscious n emotional too bc i find it Curious his mood is poor right as the narwhal is repeatedly described as positively malding to the point its boss fight mechanic is literally a rage meter). ajax' power is growing. his destiny is starting to shift and something is drawing him to fontaine... right as the narwhal is getting close to finished with the primordial sea. funny how it overlaps eh. how it aligns 🤨🤨 why are they orbiting each other like this (they should kiss)

(& not to even Mention how ajax just Happened to get that absolutely exponential and borderline unbelievable feat of power spike in extending his foul legacy endurance as massively as he did. while. within the primordial sea. with his narwhal. who had at that point all but incorporated the power of that sea into itself. i s2g if childe was getting passive home turf co-op bonus exp with a 4x multiplier automatically the whole 40+ days 💀💀)

im so obsessed with The Apothecary Diaries rn for so many reasons, but my favorite plot development so far is how they managed to place so much mystery and dread behind who Rakan was, including his dubious reasons behind his interest in Mao Mao. similar to Mao Mao it sent chills down my spine every time his name was even mentioned, so it’s insane how he went from THAT to later being like one of my favorite/most sympathetic characters?? he was a terrifying villain now im sobbing over the mistakes he made, the happy life that he and Fonshen were robbed of. the writing is insane! it never ceases to amaze me. i haven’t taken an interest in manga in so long, but I’m so happy I chose this one to start up with again.

You know we all meme about how Luffy doesn't give a shit about his parents/Dragon, how he seemingly has no interest in learning about the man or meeting him at all, and like yeah that is a Luffyism

And for a long time I figured Baby Luffy would be the same too; that Luffy in his naïvete just accepted he must've spawned from the ocean itself into Garp's care or something, not realizing he should in fact have parents, thus Luffy's seeming disinterest in them

But you know what

Luffy did spend most of his early childhood alone

Sure, he had Garp, but it seems like Garp wasn't always there to look after him every day, he had his duties as a Marine too. Had Garp been there 24/7 all year then Garp would never have allowed Luffy to interact with Shanks (a filthy pirate) to begin with. So yes, Luffy had his grandpa, but not all the time. And sure, Luffy also had Shanks, but Shanks didn't spend all his time in Fuusha Village either, he came and went whenever he pleased too until his final departure when Luffy was just six years old. And yes, there was everyone else in the village too, people who cared about Luffy and were helping look after him. But Luffy's early childhood was one without a stable family.

It wasn't until Garp yeeted the child into Dadan's care that Luffy actually gained a proper family, where after months and months of trying Luffy managed to win Ace's trust and gained Sabo as a brother too. But as we know, by that point Luffy already hated being alone

All of this to say; Luffy growing up essentially orphaned would explain why he's so afraid to be alone, the way he clings onto people

In some ways Luffy's POV is meant to be the reader's POV, to some degree Luffy's feelings and thoughts are meant to be how we the readers feel and think about whaveter is happening in the story. Not a 100% by any means, but somewhat at the very least.

Perhaps Luffy's lack of interest in Dragon isn't just "Luffy not giving a damn about blood family because chosen families are better" nor "Luffy is too stupid to understand where babies come from". Perhaps Luffy, who may have assumed he didn't have parents at all (as in "might've assumed they were dead or had intentionally abandoned him"), doesn't know what to think about the fact that he does have a father out there, one whom he has never as much as met. Because yeah, Luffy doesn't know why Dragon left him with Garp, why he never got to be with his dad. Should he be angry at Dragon, hate him for being left alone? Or did Dragon have a good reason for it, does Dragon wish things could've been different?

Perhaps Luffy's seeming disinterest in Dragon isn't because he doesn't care about blood family, but because much like us the readers, Luffy doesn't quite know what to make of Dragon, and figuring those feelings out hasn't been relevant to the plot yet.

The paylist follows the general vibe of the narrative: Maedhros' realization of the cycles, his struggles, his saving grace, and his determination to succeed in battle with his loved ones alive no matter how many times he has to get back up and try again. The songs genre is mostly: indie, folk, with some musical numbers thrown in because honestly, its not one of my playlists without a musical song or two

This is a brilliant fic so if you havent read it already i would reccomend! It's also an ongoing series and I've probably read the entire thing over a dozen times, its really become one of my favourite comfort fics/series of all time.

second, do you think Miura fully ommiting Griffith getting tortured visually was intentional? I mean, Berserk never shys away from grotesque subjects (SA, explicit murder and much much more).

We did get Griffith's mindset, and how Guts was the one who was keeping his sanity through all this.

But we never got like,, Griffith crying, screaming, or anything really while he was getting tortured. It's like, they ommited the torture Griff went through, and I wonder why?

Because I mean, it's not that im a wierd sadist who wants to see that, it's more like, a lot of the berserk fandom ignores and neglects the pain Griff went through when he was tortured for over a year if i am correct?

And I wonder if it's because we didn't get a chance to see his pain through it and more of the aftermath.

I don't fully know where i'm going with this, but i wonder why explicit facial and physical reactions while Griff was tortured was kept away.

Could it be to shook us when we see his current state? or was it for another reason? I'm curious!

Honestly lol I think the Griffith-hating fandom would downplay it no matter what, there's no salvaging that side of fandom.

My instinctive answer for why Miura only really showed the aftermath of the torture is for the torture chamber reveal that it was worse than Guts ever anticipated. He, and a lot of the other Hawks, have this attitude that he expects to rescue Griffith and then everything will go back to normal for everyone, and they can all just pick up where they left off. I think there's a certain effective atmosphere created by showing Guts' optimistic denial while the reader is left to stew in ominous awareness that it's probably worse than Guts thinks (since we know about Femto already) without fully knowing how much worse.

And then yeah when they do see him and we can see that Griffith is beyond recovery, it is an effective, disturbing reveal imo that wouldn't have had the same impact if we'd already seen the state Griffith was in.

There's also the fact that in theory your imagination is worse than anything that can be shown to you - something a lot of horror relies on. Actually seeing Griffith screaming while being tortured eg would be a release of tension, like oh okay it's bad, but at least we know how bad now. Without seeing it we can imagine a lot worse than Miura would have narrative space to show, both in terms of torture and Griffith's emotional reaction. For those of us who care about Griffith at least, which is the intended audience of the story lol.

oh, yeah, another thing i noticed that was odd about s5 in comparison to earlier seasons was how much they relied on like. not the history of the doctor, exactly, but the image of that history. whether from little easter eggs of the first doctor’s picture popping up everywhere to i think the two(?) times in the season we get a montage of past doctors. and i honestly can’t remember anything like that happening earlier (with the exception of the time crash short, which felt more substantial to me and was also like. 7 straight minutes of david tennant being allowed to fangirl.)

and i say ‘the image’ because hell knows the RTD era was pulling from doctor who past left, right, and center, but it rarely felt like a moment of ‘look at this old thing, you remember old thing? old thing was cool and so are we for continuing it.’ and more like ‘here’s a species/character/etc from classic who. and here’s how they’ve changed and fit into the new world we’ve built for the show.’

I guess, the difference here for me is that. i haven’t watched classic who. s5 shows me a slideshow of doctors and to me, those are the guys i once ranked by how sexy i think they are. and not much else. i don’t have an emotional connection to an image. but take, say, school reunion? an episode that was my favorite even back when i was a kid specifically because i adored sarah jane? i had no idea who she was then, i only just figured out a little bit ago which doctor she traveled with, and exclusively all i’ve watched of her is that episode in s2 and the sarah jane adventures. and yet, that episode, without the context there for me, managed to make sense to me. i’m sure it was probably even more impactful to fans of sarah jane from classic who, but it didn’t lose its impact without that knowledge.

so, that’s a shift. i don’t want to say it’s a negative one, exactly, because maybe people who have seen classic who like these references and i’m missing something. but, to me, it feels a little more shallow.

#sorry if i kept talking about sarah jane and school reunion we’d be here all day. her reintroduction to nuwho is phenomenal. #even without classic who. you get it. you get what the doctor did to her. you understand how much it hurt her. by giving her time with rose #we’re able to use what we know about rose to parallel her with sarah jane and infer that sarah jane was a lot like her once. it’s good! #and seeing pictures of the first doctor is like. very funny because he’s a silly little guy. but i don’t know that man. #but yeah. another example i’d put out there is Dalek. and yes everyone loves dalek we all know its good. but. without the context of classic #who. this was the choice of how to reintroduce the daleks to the audience. not as silly tin can killing machine. but as this. this wretched #and pitiable thing that dies to see the sunlight. this monster that is. in its last moments. capable of change. however small. #(a theme that i think links up well to evolution of the daleks in s3. i think its interesting how we’re invited to see the daleks first as #beings that have had a great and terrible injustice done to them. (in episode: the dalek being chained up and tortured. in a wider context: #how daleks are made at all.) before we’re introduced to them as a galaxy-wide threat intent on inflicting that same suffering on the rest of #the universe.) #MY POINT IS: nuwho and classic who mix well when the classic who elements are reintroduced in a way that makes sense both for people with #the back knowledge of classic who (and maybe they get even more out of it) while ALSO makign sense to people who’ve only seen nuwho. #anyway. this is a small thing its far from like. a show-ruining point. its literally fine lol. #doctor who #dw lb

Note: First of all, I want it to be known that this is the exact fic that pushed me to create this blog. I have been reading fanfic again for the first time in 7 years, and have been treated to some amazing stories. What set this one apart for me has a lot to do with this being this authors first fic. This is what excites me about fanfic! People putting stuff out there for the first time and still finding ways to be fresh and creative! And proves that the Good Omens fandom has so much further we can go until we get Season 3! I am so excited for this period of creation.

*Minor Spoilers* In this story, we meet up with Aziraphale and Crowley several years after Aziraphale has left to become Supreme Archangel. This is not a romantic reuniting. Aziraphale is changed, he has lost his essence and is becoming the worst version of himself. His behavior is off putting, and has a hint of underlying violence. I was worried about the characterization, it isn't the Aziraphale we love. But that's the point. Heaven corrupts, removes him from who he became on earth. Heaven is an interesting place here. It removes complex emotions and turns on an obedient type of reverence. You can begin to understand why Gabriel and the rest of the angels are the way they are. Aziraphale was only able to become who he is by escaping to earth. Now that he's been there so long, overwhelmed by the power and responsibility he holds, he's forgotten who he is.

I won't spoil all the plot details, lets just say the contract mentioned in the summary allows each other full control over the other for three days each. Aziraphale uses his days to force his way into Crowley's mind, which leads to a really interesting concept of their inner worlds. Giving them access to the others deepest secrets. They are incredibly engaging scenes, but have an underlying feeling of trespass and betrayal. It is not a consenting experience, but also does force them to face their issues head on. Would they have been able to be honest with each other without force? Maybe, maybe not, but Aziraphale demands access when Crowley would have given it if asked. Crowley uses his days of control in a different way. A soothing balm to everything that came before. Crowley's days are where this story really shines. The range of emotions that Aziraphale goes through is visceral. He is wild with anger, shame, and hunger. It's everything he has bottled up for thousands of years overflowing and overwhelming him. Only then can the pieces start to come back together. That passion isn't shameful. That it's good to WANT, to hunger. To feel regret and anger fully. To complete the cheese, it's what makes us human. The side Aziraphale and Crowley chose for themselves. And that emotional balance Crowley brings to Aziraphale is what will end up saving them.

While I will always want a longer story, this length was very satisfying. It tells exactly the story it wants to tell and doesn't run around in circles repeating itself. This is an excellent first time fic! An engaging and unique character study that I loved. It's semi safe in public until towards the end, but I think one sitting at home is the best place for this.

Do you remember a post on what Griffith mouthed to charlotte during the tower escape sequence. I can't find it.

I touch on that scene in the fourth part of this Griffith essay, if that's what you're thinking of? Otherwise idk, I may have discussed it elsewhere, but if so I don't remember.

If you're wondering what Griffith mouthed to her, he promised he'd come back to her. Charlotte says this in chapter 67, Armour to the Heart.

My take on it is brief: part of Griffith is stlil in emotional denial during the rescue despite all logic, and it's the Wyald sequence that really hammers home for him how everything is destroyed, making Wyald's rundown of Griffith's current state extra devastating to him. Placing this scene right before Armour to the Heart works as foreshadowing for Femto, but also underscores Griffith still clinging to his "armour" ie denial.
