2017 - A DIGITAL BLACK HOLE

I'M ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT DOESN'T BACK UP THEIR PHONE (I MEAN, NOW I DO) AND THERE ARE SOME DARK PERIODS WHERE I HAVE ALMOST NO PROOF OF SHOP LIFE. 2017 IS ONE SUCH TIME. I KNOW WE WE'RE UP TO A LOT IN THE STUDIO, DEVELOPING OUR APPAREL LINE THAT WE THEN MADE IN HOUSE. LOTS OF LINEN IN THOSE DAYS.

IN 2017 MY THEN PARTNER AND I CREATED A VINTAGE LABEL. IT WAS CALLED 'CHUKO' AND WE WENT OVER TO CANADA TO SOURCE VINTAGE THAT CAME IN THROUGH VANCOUVER AND FOR SOME REASON, THERE WAS JUST ABSOLUTE HOARDS OF GREAT VINTAGE THERE! THIS WAS A FUN LITTLE SOJOURN INTO VINTAGE, THAT LASTED JUST ABOUT AS LONG AS THAT RELATIONSHIP DID..

ALSO, THIS IS BEAUTIFUL BELLA, WHO WORKED IN THE LAIR STUDIO FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS! BUT PRIOR TO THAT WOULD MODEL FOR US , AND SOMETIMES HELP OUT WITH FINISHING JEWELLERY BACK IN THOSE DAYS, WHAT A SWEETHEART!

This is a movie that I first noticed when looking at Shudder for 2023 releases. I didn't realize it was Neil Marshall until settling in. This feels like elements of Dog Soldiers, but with a different monster. It also isn't as good either. I still had fun for this action/horror film with solid monsters. GABOON VIPER Bitis gabonica ©Laura Quick This solitary snake is easily recognizable (though often hard to spot) due to its beautiful, symmetrical patterning, it disappears into the leaf litter. As an ambush predator, this nocturnal hunter will hide among the leaves and wait for its prey to pass by. Sometimes its victims will unknowingly walk right on top of the snake, not realizing their mistake until it is too late. With the highest venom yield of all venomous snakes, they have a deadly bite. The number of human fatalities is low as Gaboon vipers tend to be very calm, docile snakes. When threatened, they will initially hold very still and produce a loud, hissing sound as a warning. Unless striking, they tend to be slow-moving. Gaboon viper bites are rare; however, when they bite it is often fatal. “We’re the storm, mate.”

The plot: When a pilot is shot down, she finds an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made creatures – half human, half alien – are awakened.

I had this one on my to-watch ever since the trailer came out, I didn’t have high expectations since most horror movies nowadays end up being a huge let down. The trailer in question though gave off House of Ashes vibes (monsters, soldiers being stuck with them underground), so my interest was definitely piqued.

The movie itself I would describe as Comedy horror, it’s not the type that would seriously scare you. The dialogue is a bit goofy at times (in a good way) and succeeded at making me laugh (I so rewatched some scenes), the cast was great, my most favorite character was hands down the hilarious Sergeant Oswald Jones (played by Leon Ockenden).

Without spoiling anything,The Lair was a fun ride and I highly recommend giving it a watch.

Also, that “heroically” walking towards the jeep scene totally screamed “this is now a video game, choose your character for the fight”. :D
