I do feel like I'm somehow getting away with something by watching all these Artistic Films. Like somehow I'm sneaking into a gilded theater, I'm rubbing my hands on the film canisters and DVD box sets, I'm taking a permanent marker and scrawling my little notes and opinions on the blank projection screen knowing that, come Monday, the janitor is going to open the doors and sigh, because Whelp, she's back again; apparently she had some thoughts about how Infinity Pool and Poor Things both reflect our postmodern concerns surrounding construction of the self. *sigh* It's going to take all day to wash this off...

gojo satoru has developed a new weakness: romcoms
a/n: hi friends !! hope you are all well <3 just a quick little something I’ve been thinking of
wordcount: 1,138
masterlist
“okay give it one shot and i swear i will never ask you to watch a romcom ever again!” you’re pleading, seconds away from getting on your knees and waving your hands in the air, shouting a ‘please, please, please, please’ until he caves to your wishes.
“what’s it called again?” he’s sighing, already pulling the streaming app onto the tv as you’re grinning widely.
“crazy, stupid, love! you’re gonna love it i swear” you giggle, cuddling into his side as he run his fingers up and down your arm absentmindedly.
it’s only 10 minutes into the movie when you’re glancing at your boyfriend, biting back a grin when you see his eyes glued to his screen. you’re shocked when you hear a giggle from the 6 ft something man as ryan gosling flirts on screen.
“did you just giggle at ryan gosling?” you’re smiling and he only looks at you with one brow lifted. “you didn’t? it’s fuckimg ryan gosling” he emphasizes and you nod your head, “fair,” you reply settling back into his side as you two focus on the movie.
satoru is almost in tears by the end of the movie, a heartfelt smile on his face as he watches the ending unfold, giggling at the dialogue (or maybe ryan gosling).
“so what did you think?” you ask, grabbing the remote after the credits start rolling. your lovers unusual silence causes you to glance at him, bursting into laughter as you take in the pout on his lip and his expression of defeat.
“i cant believe i was wrong” he mumbles, “how can this happen to me, how could i be defeated?” he’s holding his head in his hands dramatically as you wheeze from laughter, squeaking a bit as you try to calm yourself down.
“does this make me the strongest” you laugh, shoving him lightly, his blue eyes narrow at you playfully, tackling you so he’s laying ontop of you, his bed resting in the crook of your neck as he’s sighing loudly.
“so what did you think” you smile, already knowing his answer. he’s not moving as his lips mumble against your skin, tickling you slightly and pushing him off you, “can’t hear you” you tease, satoru pouts a bit.
“it was amazing, it was real cinema” he sighs, his eyes screwed shut as he tries to force some tears out of his eyes.
“okay well what do you wanna watch now?” you ask, giving him the remote. satoru is quiet as he hands you the remote, not daring to look you in the eye.
“another one” he mumbles, trying his best to avoid your gaze.
“say that again?” you smile, there’s a shit eating grin on your face as he repeats the two words. “what happened to my satoru? the one who called romcoms the downfall of society?” you accuse, laughing as he rolls his eyes and gets off of you, pouting and sitting on the opposite end of the couch.
“people can change! I’m a changed man” he says, closing his eyes and crossing his arms over his chest. he still has a small pout on his soft lips, opening one eye to peak if you were staring at him, satisfied that you were he hugged once more.
“alright i believe you” you smile, moving so that your arms wrapped around his waist, squeezing a bit. “so i have like three other ones tied for second favorite of mine, let me show you” he’s paying attention to you now, eyes glued to the screen as you show him the previews for the movies.
“hm” he has a finger on his chin and his brows are furrowed, “i think i wanna watch 10 things i hate about you” you’re cheering as you press play, the two of you giggling to each other as you cuddle up, silent as the movie begins to play.
it had been only a couple days since that night, and satoru was off overseas on a mission, texting you more often than not and calling you anytime he could.
hey what’s the hbo password?
the sudden text catches you off guard, furrowing your brows as you reply, unlocking your front door.
*******
you can at least ask me about my day >:(
how was your day sweetheart <333 ??
the apple of my eye
my sweet sweet lover
you’re rolling your eyes, smiling and shaking your head at your boyfriends actions. curiosity gets the best of you, and soon enough you’re logging into hbo, going to satorus profile and your mouth is wide open.
Continue Watching: Confessions of a Shopaholic
you’re full on laughing, scrambling for your phone as you call your boyfriend.
“hi sweets can we talk in like… 47 minutes and 28 seconds?” his eyes flicking between his phone and the tv screen in his hotel room.
“why’s that?” You ask, your brow arched and suddenly he’s panicking a bit. “you’re too busy for me now? is that it?” your voice is stern and it’s taking everything for you to not burst into a smile.
“no! of course not sweetheart it’s just-” he’s pausing the movie, and you’re cutting him off before he can admit to his crimes.
“is it Rebecca Bloomberg? or are you too busy giggling over Luke? which is understandable by the way” you laugh, toppling over and wheezing as you see the utter shock on your lovers face.
“how did you- but- i can explain okay?” he’s speaking loudly, trying his best to save face and spewing all sorts of lies.
“-so when you think about it if i didn’t watch it the world would’ve burned!” he finishes after a second, you’re shaking your head at him.
“tell me what you think of the ending, I’m gonna make dinner and sleep, take care okay?” you’re saying your goodbyes as he blows a much too loud kiss to the camera.
when satoru returned from his mission he did what any sane man does. he walked into his home, kissed his wonderful, amazing, beautiful partner, order dinner for the two of you, and put on one of the movies he’d been dying to watch.
How to lose a guy in 10 days.
it was funny really, how many times you’d changed his mind on things he’d always sworn he hated. if anyone had told him he’d be in a stable loving relationship, watching romcoms deep into the morning he would’ve laughed at them in their face. if he’d been told he would like the way anyone cooked cauliflower or a variety of veggies he would’ve ignored them, calling them dirty liars.
yet there he was, watching romcoms with you until 4 am, having some dinner you’d cooked with a side of veggies that he absolutely devoured. and he wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Hi LJ! Loved the bangathon idea!!! I got cowgirl, so I would love to see that with brat tamer Dave York or maybe they were roommates! Frankie. Pick your poison! I'll love it either way
Oh man, as much as Dave York would be fun...I can never resist Frankie, especially they were roommates!Frankie? I'm in!
Pairing: Francisco "Catfish" Morales x F!Reader
Position: Cowgirl
Word Count: 1009
Warnings: Explicit, 18+ MINORS DNI, PiV sex, breast play, an M Night Shyamalan twist, too many feelings for our own good.
Notes: This is a little bit different from the previous asks, but I really liked how it turned out and I'm making it all your problem.
You can’t have heard that right.
You’re walking in the door of your apartment, maybe a little earlier than usual, when you hear a low groan. Body freezing, you wait for a signal that it’s just the old building creaking again.
Nope. Another sigh, a thin moan, all coming from the living room. Not a pained one, at least not in the way that would send you running to investigate. And not an unfamiliar one. It’s definitely from your roommate Frankie.
The problem now is what to do with the image of Frankie probably jacking it in your shared living room. What his hand might look like down his pants, head tossed back on the couch. Did he have porn on, turned low enough that only he could hear it? Or were his eyes squeezed shut to an image only he can see?
It wasn’t the first time you’d accidentally listened in on Frankie. You’d been living together for over a year, and the apartment was clean and comfortable, but not soundproofed. Frankie was respectful about privacy, but he was also a man who brought women home sometimes. You’d seen the pillows stuffed behind the headboard to keep it from knocking against the wall, but the muffled pleasure wasn’t always so quiet.
You wished on more than one occasion for one of the men you brought home to fuck you good enough to let Frankie hear, but it had been woefully quiet on that front. Catching Frankie making coffee in his sleep shorts, sardonic smile over the top of his coffee mug, made most of them leave in a hurry. If you cared it would have annoyed you, the chest-puffing territorial nature of these moments, but deep down you were just as glad for them to leave.
Creeping down the hall, you wonder why the hell Frankie is having a solo session so out in the open. The man is private almost to a fault, most things you know about him dragged out over months. Why place himself in such a vulnerable position, where you could find him?
Your stomach drops briefly considering if it’s on purpose. There had been some playful banter between you before. He’d complimented your outfits, you’d told him he looked good in his new jeans. There were shared interests, nights spent in watching the new HBO movie and eating popcorn out of the same bowl.
Could he want you to catch him? If you turned into the living room right now would he be thrusting up into his hand, your name on his lips? Hands trembling ever so slightly, you put down your bag and silently pad to the source of the sound.
Frankie’s soft mop of curls is visible over the top of the couch, spilling onto the gray fabric. Many times your fingers had itched to weave into those curls, see if he likes his hair being pulled or if just carding them through would make him moan. He hasn’t moved, your approach silent. Nothing on the TV, but another whimper brings you closer.
A fantasy you’d never admitted to having pulls to the forefront -
Frankie sitting on the couch, giving you a sultry look after a few drinks. You catch him looking at your ass, gather up your courage between the walk to the kitchen and back.
“Like something you see?” you ask, electricity in the air.
“You,” is all Frankie says before you’re on his lap, straddling him as he pulls your lips to his. He tastes like the cheap beer he prefers, one chaste kiss deepening until he’s swiping his tongue into your mouth and tangling it with yours. He’s rucking your shirt off next, latching his plush lips on your aching nipple. Working the button of his jeans open, you both frantically discard your pants and meet again with nothing between you.
“Wanted to do this for so long,” Frankie whispers into your mouth as he lines himself up.
“Me too,” you say before the thick slide of his cock inside you dashes all words from your mind. Large hands on your hips guide you on his lap, instinct taking over as you ride him. He clutches onto your back, alternating between panting open-mouthed kisses and suckling down your neck. You bury your fingers in his curls, whines becoming fervent shrieks as he thumbs your clit and thrusts up into pure bliss…
- which is interrupted when your last steps bring Frankie into sight.
No hand down his pants, or cock out. Instead his head is lolled to the side, eyes squeezed shut with a painful wrinkle between his brows. His hands are clenching on the couch, thighs tensing over and over. The whimpers fall from half-parted lips, and you snap from your fantasy to the sharp reality of the moment. Frankie never told you he had nightmares, you assumed a by-product of his military career, but you’d heard him once or twice. The next morning he’d pretend he was fine, but you could see the toll it took.
Now there was a small chance you could help.
“Frankie, you’re dreaming,” you say quietly, pressing both hands into his biceps to pin him against the couch. When he doesn’t respond you say it again, louder this time. It takes a tighter squeeze and a third try before his eyes blink open, surprised and flinching against your hold before you soothe him with, “It’s okay, it’s just me, you’re okay, you were sleeping.” The terror slowly recedes, his eyes casting down as he mumbles some sort of apology you can’t make out.
“It’s okay, you’re okay,” you say, and you do the unthinkable; you sit beside Frankie and pull his head to the crook of your neck. He balks at first, then goes down, pressing his face in and letting his arms wrap loosely around you. You let his breathing slow, small reassurances passing between long stretches of silence. Something swells in your chest, surprising and complicated but warm.
And this is when you know you’ve fallen for Francisco Morales.

9 Anime to Watch When You Want to Feel Like 👇🏾
Tumblr media
Whether you're emotionally dead inside and just need that extra oomf to feel anything or if you just need a good cry, below are a few short series/movies to check out. Trigger warnings are included but, let's be serious, the triggers are what we're watching for, no?
Tumblr media
A Silent Voice (movie) - this is a good reminder that we do not exist in a bubble. Our actions and the way we treat others leave a mark on them and apologies don't always remedy that.
Sub/Dub | Netflix ‼️ TW: bullying, grief/loss, suicide or self harm, anxiety
Tumblr media
Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (series but I think there's a movie summary as well) - this examines the kind of grief that clings to you when you can't move on from loss. The story focuses on a group of people who continue to mourn their childhood friend years after her passing.
Sub/Dub | Funimation, Netflix ‼️ TW: major character death, grief/loss, guilt, attempted SA
Tumblr media
Banana Fish (series) - I worry that I may only be able to watch this show once because it's so compelling but I cry about it regularly (literally, peep the blog) despite being inherently emotionally unavailable. The story follows a young gang leader who unknowingly stumbles onto a full blown conspiracy when he assumes possession of a drug given to him by a dying man. It's gritty and action packed while also being intense and vulnerable but it is not something I'd watch without taking a hard look at the trigger warnings.
Sub | Prime Video ‼️ TW: major character death(s), grief/loss, PTSD, implied CSA, implied SA, sexual harassment, military conflict, physical violence, trauma, substance abuse, gore, sex trafficking (all ages), suicide, gun & knife violence, gang violence, implied incest, incarceration, coarse language
Tumblr media
To Your Eternity (series) - how do we interpret and explain life to something that has just blinked into existence? This series explores the journey of a newly formed immortal being as it begins to experience everything that this planet has to offer. It bears witness to the good and evil in other beings through forging clumsy connections with them as it becomes wise in the way of the world and also shows how, as we survive, we carry with us those that we've loved.
Sub/Dub | HBO Max ‼️ TW: major character death, grief/loss, physical violence
Tumblr media
Ride Your Wave (movie) - even fated love comes to an end eventually.
Sub/Dub | HBO Max ‼️ TW: major character death, grief/loss
Tumblr media
Clannad (series) - a story about how opening yourself up to others can bring fullness to your life and a myriad of other experiences and emotions you wouldn't have.
Sub/Dub | HiDive ‼️ TW: implied death, illness, grief/loss, substance abuse
Tumblr media
Angel Beats (series) - no major character death warning because all of the characters are already dead! Welcome to the afterlife where young souls are fighting like hell to avoid the great beyond... beyond.
Sub/Dub | Netflix ‼️ TW: implied death, gun violence, knife violence, murder, gore, portrayal of death (repeatedly), bullying (arguably)
Tumblr media
Kotaro Lives Alone (series) - Despite following the daily life of an overly polite 4 year old with the diction of an honorably chivalrous samurai, this show's innocuous story telling will have you ugly crying.
Sub/Dub | Netflix ‼️ TW: implied abuse (child and/or domestic), implied verbal abuse, neglect, stalking, grief/loss, implied death, implied mental illness
Tumblr media
Terror in Resonance (series) - this is a psychological thriller and social critique on a lost generation. It follows two young boys who employ the use of widespread fear to bring focus and sympathy to their mission, one they desperately feel is worth risking their freedom and lives for. This may be the least likely to be a tear jerker on this list but worth a watch.
Sub/Dub | Funimation ‼️ TW: major character death, grief/loss, gun violence, bombing, implied murder/suicide, terrorism, child abuse

For today's return to WTW, i thought it might be fun to celebrate the ways in which we survive and manage to find peace and happiness in our one precious life here on Earth. And so...

What's a TV show or movie you plan to re-watch this year? i would like to watch shameless again! honestly it's odd for me to be so into the characters and not re-watching the source material constantly. also looking on hbo.
Whats a book or fic you will probably re-read this year? my favorite smut stays on rotation and i've mentioned them before... beyond that i'm kind of obsessed with You Can Bite Me. 🩸
What is a song you will likely continue to play on repeat? unsure, but it'll probably be something by julien baker.
What's a tasty treat you look forward to eating more of this year? i don't really deny myself anything, but i do miss having vietnamese 🇻🇳 and ethiopian 🇪🇹 food close by. luckily, we're considering moving closer to a city so that could be a possibility in my future!

Tell me something you like about how you look! ugh. my eyes are nice, i guess. and my tattoos. i love those.

Review: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Well this was a disappointment.
Furiosa goes for a very different vibe that Fury Road. Instead of a single adventure, the movie spans most of Furiosa's life before the events of the previous film.
The first half of the movie focus on her childhood and in the second one we see her as a young adult dealing with the conflicts between Immortan Joe and Chris Hemsworth's character.
Unfortunately, for such ambitious story you can tell the budget is very small. Like 80% of the movie is happening in a stage or in front of green screens made to looks like the deset, and the camera work feels very simple. Many times the action sequences feel like they belong on a TV show instead of a movie.
Also, many cool stuff seems to happen offscreen. For example, near the end there is a all-out war between gangs but we only see it as a 10-second montage.
Another problem I have is that Furiosa barely feels like a character. She mostly reacts to the actions of Chris Hemsworth, who feels more like a protagonist moving the story forward. At least Hemsworth is really good and really fun in this as the main villain.
At some point there is a romance subplot that I actually enjoyed. Wish more of the movie was about that.
So yeah, more of a "wait until it hits HBO MAX to watch it" kind of flick.

Hey, can I ask you how do you make your gifs?
It took a lot of trial and error, but here is what I have learned(so far cause I'm very much still going through it):
1. Photoshop vs Photopea
To make your gifs you can either use Photoshop or Photopea. I started off with Photpea because it’s cloud-based and doesn’t take up any space on your computer, but I've since moved onto Photoshop. Most of the tutorials you’ll find will use photoshop. So if you need help or want to learn a new skill it will be much easier to find that help if you are using Photoshop.
Photoshop
👆🏽They have ones out there for mac if you search for them on here, but I happen to have a Windows PC so this is the one I use🤷🏽‍♀️
Photopea
2. Downloading videos
I get most of my videos from either YouTube or torrent sites which have a wide selection of shows and movies for you to download.
Watch So Much
👆🏽Is my favorite torrent site. You can also stream shows and movies on their site well.
YTS
👆🏽Is another torrent site I use, but they only have movies on there.
Qbittorrent
👆🏽Lets you download torrents. I should note that If you torrent you'll need a VPN. Literally do not try and download any content from HBO or Disney without a VPN, because at least here in America, they will email you threatening to disconnect your internet😅
For VPN’s do not use the free ones. They don’t work. I’ve personally used NordVPN, but there are other ones out there like Surfshark, or ProtonVPN.
4k downloader
👆🏽Lets you download most things off of YouTube(as well as a couple other sites like TikTok). I say most things because they will not let you download those free movies(ex. Twilight) YouTube itself uploads onto its platform.
Occasionally someone will upload an old movie onto a private channel which you can download with no problems, but anything new or recent you won’t find on there.
You do not have to use a VPN to download videos from YouTube.
3. Resources:
Whatever you're trying to gif will probably be on the long side. So you're either going to need to trim it down to make a 2-3 second clip that you can then use to make your gif, or you can screencap your video.
Screencaping allows you to take a shot of each individual frame* which you can then use to make your gifs out of.
*I like to use anywhere between 40-90 frames per gif.
VLC
👆🏽This is a video player that lets you play your videos and create screencaps from them.
👆🏽This is a great post on how to screencap using VLC.
KMPlayer
👆🏽Is another video player/screencapping software, but I found their interface to be overly complicated
Clipchamp
👆🏽This lets you trim down your videos to create those 2-3-second clips. There are better video editing tools out there(like DaVinci Resolve), but if you have Windows for what it's worth, it’s simple and gets the job done 🤷🏽‍♀️
rPiracy
👆🏽Has links for torrents and things of that nature.
👆🏽This is a great post on how to make a basic gif using Photoshop.
👆🏽This is a great post on how to make a basic gif using Photopea.
👆🏽This user has a lot of tutorials so when you're ready to move onto more complicated gif making, use them as a resource.
4. Lastly, have patience with yourself.
GIF making is time-consuming and as I stated it takes practice. So don't sweat it too much and have fun🎉

8 Shows to Get to Know Me
The rules seem pretty simple, just to list 8 shows to get to know me. Some people have explanations and some don't so we'll see.
I was tagged by @negrowhat.
Teen Wolf (2011-2016, 2023) Okay, I'm not necessarily proud of this one, but it was my favorite show when it was on for it's five seasons and I unironically loved the movie this year. Did it have LOTS of problems? Yes. Do I care? No. Scott McCall is one of my favorite characters of all time. Derek Hale was a flop his entire life and I loved him for it. I legit have two arrow tattoos cause of this show dammit, lol.
Tumblr media
Shameless (2011-2021) I'm ghetto white trash. I come from two lines of Slavs and American poor. I will always love it. Was it outlandish? Yeah. Did it show some real ass shit? Yeah. Did I cry at it more than once? Yeah. Did Ian and Mickey getting married heal my heart? No, but it was very nice to see. I legit live in my childhood home on the southside. I am a gay with bipolar. I am technically on probation right now. I don't think I need to say anymore.
Tumblr media
OZ (1997-2003) I started watching this show way too young. It was the most ridiculous, dramatic, ain't shit, had no business show. And yet I still own the DVDs and made my best friend start watching it. She's mad as hell at it, but she agreed to watch it knowing she would be mad as hell. And she's now the one being like "fuck we can watch another season, I hate this fuckass show but I want to watch." A win is a win.
Tumblr media
Generation Kill (2008) Yes, the American military complex is bad af. But this show is funny as fuck. It didn't hesitate to show these dudes are just regular ass dudes. There was no hero worship. My bestie and I still quote it to each other all the time. Plus the HBO War fandom was amazing back in the day. So many good edits and fics.
Tumblr media
Queer As Folk (2000-2005) Okay this show did not hold up well at all. What with the, you know, main relationship that we all loved and rooted for being Brian (29) and Justin (17). But we didn't have anything else back then okay! I still love this show, but maturing is watching it and realizing Ben and Michael were the best couple, Melanie was never wrong and should have left Lindsay, Lindsay was bisexual and needed therapy to stop being dickmatized by her gay best friend she never got to sleep with because he's a gay man, Justin also needed therapy for so many reasons like so many, and Brian needed to like just stop just stop in general.  Also, it legit took 5 YEARS and Justin also almost being killed for Brian to say "I love you" and we all just celebrated that like it was the greatest thing despite it taking FIVE YEARS. Again, it was all we had. But I still love how it showed gay people having sex and enjoying it and not really much shame or whatever. And the "admit the truth, you love him" speech is something I STILL quote for my ships to this day. Like it was very "we're here, we're queer, get used to it" and that was AMAZING for 14 year old baby gay Clyde.
Tumblr media
South Park (1997-Present) It's ain't shit to it's core. It's hilarious. It's still my humor. I've been watching since season 7. Sometimes I don't agree with the takes, but lots of times I do. And when it's not even trying to have a take it's just straight funny. When I'm in a low cycle, I put it on and can at least get some laughs, which is hard to do when I can't even get myself to shower and leave my house.
Tumblr media
South of Nowhere (2005-2008) Okay. Listen. I'm a gay lady. I wasn’t really coming to terms with it in my teens, despite having a whole ass friend I was having sex with despite being like THIS MEANS NOTHING THIS IS NORMAL IT'S NORMAL TO GET NAKED WITH YOUR HOMIE RIGHT and then she moved and I gay panicked and didn't return her calls ever and ignored her on myspace, then this show came out and I was like ...oh. Oh I see. So yeah. The N had a show about a teenage lesbian realizing she was a lesbian cause she fell in love with her out bisexual friend. And then they had a relationship! And they stayed in it! And like they had sex and it was normal and fine and just yeah. This show meant a lot to me.
Tumblr media
TharnType (2019-2021) Honestly I haven't had this show for very long personally but it is one of my favorites. I've watched it twice in less than a year. It's a hot ass mess. It's perfect. It's problematic and toxic and everything I love. Type is on that "I can hit my bitch" gay energy from back in the late-00s, which is bad don't get me wrong, but it's so delicious to watch because he's just so small, angry, and hopelessly in love. He really got the D one time ONE TIME and stayed gagging for it for the REST OF HIS LIFE. That is amazing. That is art. If you can't see how that's not the greatest thing you've ever seen, I'm sorry I can't help you. Techno remains my favorite friend in all of the BL shows I've watched now because everything he did, EVERYTHING, was gold. Lhong was BATSHIT INSANE and it was the greatest thing I've ever witnessed. My bestie has ZERO interest in any of my "gay Thai shows" but she has said she will watch this one with me because "it sounds ridiculous and it's just gonna make me mad, but you already have me watching OZ and that makes me mad so let's do it." Plus it's got "her boy" Mew. It's amazing. I'm making my straight bestie watch it and I am already so ready to watch her watch this show. I even liked the sequel. Type and Techno were really out here like IS HE CHEATING ON YOU WITH THIS GIRL like Tharn was not a whole ass homosexual who already had the convo back in college about trying pussy once and going ew. He really put on a fire fit to scare off a woman claiming his GAY man. Amazing. How could anyone hate this show. I don't understand. lol

10 Things That Somehow Didn’t Suck This Year (with a horror films sub-list).
Tumblr media
2022 has been an unbelievably surreal and disparate year for me. On one hand, I achieved three long-running goals, visiting Barcelona, becoming a home-owner, and going on a mini-tour with my band. On the other hand, I was plagued by some of the worst periods of depression of my life and endured at least two solid months of virtually nonstop distress in which things got better for a little bit before going really hard on the mental strife.
Due to so much weirdness going on, I didn’t listen to much music this year and I feel pretty ashamed about that (if you’re a friend and you released music this year, I intend on listening to it very soon, I swear). I’m also a little put off by critical writing in general right now but I still wanted to do some sort of year-end ranking for tradition’s sake. So here’s 10...entertainments? I appreciated this year - whether TV shows, movies, or going to gigs, even though there were a lot of those I unfortunately missed as well. Also throwing in a sub-list of favorite horror films, as those are one of the few things I can focus on even when things are completely haywire elsewhere.
*Atlanta: I really don’t consider a lot of art truly *perfect* but the Atlanta series finale -- and the entire 41-episode show, really -- absolutely was. Out of anyone in my generation, Donald Glover is far and away the *~creative~* I’m most in awe of, most of all for this singular and very special show. I’ll forever be grateful for the intelligence behind Atlanta (I really can’t think of a show James and I have discussed more), it’s unpredictability and the insane level of talent that could be found in its ridiculously stellar cast and crew. I loved everything about every minute of it, but my secret favorite episode was the one where Van has an identity crisis in Paris and Alexander Skarsgard cameos as a cross between an exaggerated version of himself and Armie Hammer. Utterly surreal, totally hilarious, and unquestionably brilliant.
*“Punk Rock Loser” by Viagra Boys: I didn’t totally love Viagra Boys’ 2022 release Cave World but it still somehow became the album I listened to most this year, and “Punk Rock Loser” had no contest in terms of being my most listened to song. The band excels at songs about decidedly unsavory dudes, so “Punk Rock Loser” isn’t entirely new territory but it is catchy and weirdly groovy in its own little way. Plus, the music video is an instant classic, right down to the Adidas western shirt and completely silly synchronized dance routine.
*The Rehearsal: This one is a bit of a cheat because I just watched the whole series in like three days so it’s at the forefront of my mind. But something tells me even if I had watched it three months ago I’d still be fucking reeling from it. Like, my sense of perception has been irrevocably scrambled. I need to sit in a dark room and question every interaction I’ve ever had with another human up to this point. I related to this show more than I’d like to admit and also found myself weirdly moved by it at times. Also, massive respect to Fielder for getting HBO to pay for, well, the entire thing, but especially the replica of the Alligator Lounge (although we all know Nate’s Lizard Lounge is really where it’s at).
*Playing a show with The Veldt: We started working on new music this year so we didn’t play many shows, but we still had a fair amount of success on that front and played our first-ever gigs in the midwest (including a sold out show in Chicago). But being asked to play with criminally underrated shoegazers The Veldt was truly a high water mark (on what was unfortunately a very watery evening in Brooklyn). Had gone to see The Veldt in Philly a month prior to sharing a bill with them, and was wowed by Daniel Chavis’ stage presence and vocal delivery both times around, a pretty powerful counter to the head down aloofness that genre designation typically suggests. Totally cool and lovely guys to boot.
*Warren Ellis - Nina Simone’s Gum: See my previous post, but in short, this book is mesmerizing. What I assumed would be a fairly straightforward rock memoir instead was a loving tribute to Ellis’ idols, providing a lot of insight into collecting and the power we imbue certain objects with and why. Absolutely solidified my opinion that Ellis is one of the most beautiful souls (I mean, he started a sanctuary for wildlife with special needs for god’s sake!)
*Aldous Harding at Union Transfer: Pretty much the only new music I listened to this year was the aforementioned Viagra Boys, Fontaines DC and Aldous Harding, and I was fortunate enough to see two out of three of these artists live in 2022 (Viagra Boys, maybe next year). Aldous Harding had been at the top of my gig-going wishlist pre-pandemic, so I feel especially grateful that seeing her became a reality this year. It often feels a bit weak to say “OMG I went to see (x) and they sounded just like the album,” but in Aldous’ case, this is kind of an extraordinary compliment, seeing as she sings as about a dozen different characters on her new record, sometimes flipping back and forth over several different vocal styles in a single song. Add to this Harding’s obscure yet very purposeful stage presence and that equals me being enraptured for 90 minutes straight. Had an excellent time pre-gaming at the awesome go-go cocktail bar The Trestle Inn beforehand as well.

*Intermission: My 10 (actually 11) Favorite Horror Films of 2022
Yeah yeah yeah. Everyone has said it, it’s been a great year for horror. It’s always been my favorite genre and I’ve embraced it even harder since the pandemic for whatever reason. So, just like everyone else is doing, here are my 10 favorites that I’ve seen this year. I didn’t see everything, but I’ve seen enough to have some authority on what was good, maybe...
1) Pearl - Mia Goth’s unblinking stare over the end credits = haven’t been as frightened by a face since Laura Dern running toward the camera in INLAND EMPIRE. Deserves all its accolades and then some.
2) The Menu - The cast, the setting, the dialogue, Colin Stetson’s score: everything about this was a horrible delight from start to finish. Watching Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy act together was thoroughly electrifying and I will never get Fiennes lobbing the insult “you donkey” at some rich asshole out of my head.
3) Smile - I saw the trailer for this a zillion times and thought it honestly looked hilariously stupid. Zero expectations and threw me for a complete loop. Still didn’t find it that scary but it was fun as hell and the sound design was excellent. Also, I’m sorry to say I had no idea who (PA native!) Kyle Gallner was until this year but loved him in both this and Dinner in America.
4) Men / Resurrection - Resurrection walked so Men could run, I guess. Overall, I preferred the former just because I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes for the last 20 minutes and I appreciated its mash-up of folk horror / home invasion / psychological horror / cosmic horror / body horror to the max. Resurrection had Rebecca Hall giving the most insane monologue of the year and my forever crush Tim Roth being a gaslighting sleaze-hound, and those are two things I will never shrug at.
5) What Josiah Saw - If you ever longed for a southern gothic version of Fire Walk With Me, then head over to Shudder and take this fucked up baby for a ride immediately. Had a scene, totally free of violence or gore, that made me want to squirm right out of my skin. Robert Patrick FTW and was nice(?) to see Nick Stahl again too.
6) Watcher - Great Hitchcockian throwback with great performances by Maika Monroe and Burn Gorman and some beautiful shots of Bucharest. Tense enough that I was nervous going into the bathroom by myself when it was over.
7) We’re All Going to the World’s Fair - To be honest, I didn’t love this when I was watching it, but jeez did it stick with me. Months after and I still feel a great sense of discomfort whenever I think about it. Not for everyone, but will thoroughly creep you out and fill you with a sense of crushing loneliness, if you’re down for that kind of thing.
8) Something in the Dirt - Pretty much will be open to anything Moorhead and Benson do just because I find their grassroots approach to cosmic horror and world-building really inspiring. Their latest threw about a million different interests of mine into a pot so I found Something in the Dirt especially delicious. Some really low-key funny moments and I’m still trying to piece it all together but I’m so so happy these guys are out there challenging us and doing it all in such a home-spun way.
9) Barbarian - Almost didn’t add this because the hype really got to me, but, I know -- that first half was super tense and Justin Long gave his all as perhaps the douchiest character of the year.
10) Nope - Really wasn’t a fan of US but this was quite a return to form. Loved the set pieces and the unique take on alien design. The spoken word “Purple People Eater” bit was pretty ridiculous but I laughed all the same. The blood house was marvelous, though.
***
*“Turn Off Your Brain and Yell” by Suede: I often get anxious whenever a long-running band or artist I love releases something new, even when it’s a band I love as much as Suede, and was honestly not expecting much from their 9th release Autofiction, as it was being touted as more stripped down and less high concept and dramatic. The record is just fine but live the songs are phenomenal, particularly the fittingly cathartic “Turn Off Your Brain and Yell.” The Autofiction closer served as the band’s opener at their headlining show at Philadelphia’s The Met and it was like an emotional wildfire had just ignited. I’m certain every single neck hair of every person in that venue was standing on end from this song onward. Simply put, it fucking slammed. Anyway, this Suede / Manics US tour seemed like the ultimate dream to me on paper but unfortunately turned out a little bittersweet, but at least I can say for probably the only time ever that Michelle Obama possibly had a hand in preventing me from going backstage like I was supposed to (long story!).
*The Bear: Didn’t think this could possibly live up to its hype, but really what a touching, funny, intense and lovingly made show. Jeremy Allen White, he seems a little like a himbo, but was completely captivated and moved by his portrayal of the emotionally complex and overwhelmed Carmy. Loved when Richie did or said pretty much anything and the (I cringe at the term) *~needle drops~* were spectacular. Ready to drink down a second season like Xanax-laced ecto-cooler.
*Kendrick Lamar performing “Savior” at Glastonbury : I feel a bit of a faker listing this as I haven’t watched Kendrick’s Glastonbury 2022 performance in full yet (doing that over the weekend, hopefully), and I’ve only listened to Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers once. I have, however, been returning to this video over and over for months now and I love everything about it -- the lighting, minimalist stage set up -- in such stark contrast to an event as overblown as the Glastonbury festival -- the dancers, and of course the fake blood and glittery crown of thorns. Most of all, I love that the message takes precedence, as it should be but so rarely is these days. So, thank you Kendrick and all the preceding makers on this list for saying or doing something meaningful in a year that frequently felt meaningless.

So Yellowjackets is supposed to have a 5 series arc (I think that's what I read?) Frankly I like this idea because it means the creators have a fairy good idea of where the show is going and how it ends which is nice since way too many shows stay on far longer than they should but what are your thoughts and where do you see the show going into season 2 and beyond?
Yeah! Warning: LONG POST AHEAD! Cut provided for anyone scrolling the dash who isn't interested.
I will say I am manifesting a confirmation of all 5 seasons by the end of 2023.
General storytelling thoughts: My understanding is that Yellowjackets was created with a 5 season arc in mind, and I believe they pitched it with ideally 5 seasons which is likely part of the reason previous networks didn't want it (could also be the violent cannibalism in the pilot who knows!). From what I know of TV (a few friends in the live action tv industry, my years marketing in entertainment) people write first seasons hoping for a season 2 but good writers make a season 1 that can be cancelled. Which, if they cancelled the show after season 1, it would wrap up enough of the main plots to keep people satisfied though wanting more with that cliffhanger.
As a person who loves an organized showrunner, knowing they've come in with a 5 season plan makes me really really confident. My favorite show, Mr. Robot, was adapted from a movie screenplay to a specifically 4-season run, and I think the writers/runners knowing their full plan going in makes a show better, tighter, and more interesting. I'm a survivor of PLL's 7 seasons so I have been dragged through terrible development before and fortunately I don't see it happening here, especially not when Ashley Nickerson and Bart Lyle now have an overall contract with Showtime. If you don't know what that means, basically it means even if Yellowjackets ended tomorrow they are guaranteed more projects - whether it's a certain number of projects or a certain type of project is up to the contract. What that says to me is that Showtime wants to invest in quality showrunners, since places like Netflix and HBO/Warner are really facing the brunt of "so much content, not enough quality" criticisms after canceling series after series of fictional content. It also says they, fingers crossed, won't be extending Yellowjackets just to keep paychecks coming. Viacom in general, though I am biased, likes to keep things running. They own quite a few networks with "legacy shows" (think: Spongebob, Drag Race [despite it being moved across all their networks], Wild N' Out, Billions, The Chi).
Anyway less politics of television more talking plot - I hope that, if we keep the same pace, we have the fifth season as the only season where we see the girls in 1997 post-rescue. While I think the post-rescue stuff will be interesting, I do not think we need more than a season of it because we can fill in the blanks already for at least Taissa and Shauna with season 1's info.
Season 2 predictions: I think we're definitely going to end the season with 1 of 2 shots: Shauna giving birth, The First Cannibalism. The way the timeline worked for season 1, it was like 4-5 months out there? And now that winter has come I can see the show slowing down to emphasize just how long winter is for the girls, and to give us room to empathize and pity them for their descent into cannibalism. Shauna will transition from our Main Girlie (Teen) into Lottie being our Main Girlie (Teen) and as we learn more about adult Lottie we'll see more teen Lottie and Van. I think we'll also get more of Taissa's background unlocked a bit with Van coming back into the picture and obviously explanations surrounding That Finale.
Where season 1 really focused on the relationship between Shauna and Jackie (the narrative of survival versus society, where Shauna struggles between the authentic [Taissa] and society's expectations [Jackie]), I see us transitioning more to Taissa struggling with her otherwise rational girlfriend's tunnelvision faith in Lottie and her powers. Therefore weighing the natural [Shauna, presumably representing natural with her pregnancy storyline] and the supernatural [Lottie, who is dividing Van's attention].) We may see some parallels to Taissa's relationship with Van and Shauna's relationship with Jackie, and I presume Shauna will be a grounding force for Taissa as her nighttime "walks" and dirt sessions become more frequent. I see the two as keeping each other in check, whereas Nat and Misty just kind of drive each other further into mess.
For Natalie, I see us learning more about her time with Travis as an adult and we'll probably see their teen counterparts struggle with the new "religion" and probably be the first and loudest two to take a stand against her. This may be what finally aligns teen Taissa with teen Natalie, and could ultimately lead to the Tai/Van breakup. Natalie and Travis are likely going to do the best they can to not succumb to cannibalism and I firmly believe that the three girls (not including Misty, I'll get to her) will come together and bond over their fear of what Lottie's doing.
With Shauna, we'll obviously see how the investigation goes into Adam and the fallout with Callie. Cannot wait to see Jeff and Shauna gaslight their own daughter into thinking everything is fine and no one killed anyone. Her teen storyline, as I mentioned, will revolve around her pregnancy, supporting Taissa, and staying safe under Lottie's reign. Jason Ritter is noted to guest star, I think he might play an officer asking questions about how she knew Adam. (He did play an officer in Candy.)
Finally, we're getting Misty's personal detective show. I think that her obsession with Natalie is going to get us into full-tilt Citizen Detective Misty Mode. We're going to get one of these two plots with Walter if my hunch is correct: Walter is investigating Adam going missing, or Walter is going to help Misty investigate Natalie going missing but realize there's more to the story than Misty will give him. Either way, she'll be dual-wielding Citizen Detective info on the detective end and the criminal end. We may see her interacting with Shauna more as an adult. As a teen, we know she's going to make a new friend who is into theatre. Either Walter dies at her hand, or both Walter and Crystal die and she now loves Andrew Lloyd Weber in honor of her first real friend that she eats. I know her teen plotline is also going to involve her trying to get power through the cult, it seems clear from the finale that teen Misty found her way "back into" (was she ever really in?) the trust of the team and she'll do anything to keep it since the consequences are now life or death.
I haven't a clue what we're getting with Van and Lottie and I kind of like that, it gives me something to not have expectations on and not theorize about and just go with the flow with.
Of course, I'm open to most things happening within reason. I will be upset if they decide to go a route that is disrespectful to indigenous cultures, such as using w* for a plotline to explain the supernatural. Hopefully, since we see Courtney Eaton's identity being respected in casting her older actress, we'll see similar respect for other indigenous peoples in that plot unfolding. I think the writers are much better than taking from indigenous lore and can work with a lot of other possibilities. Maybe by the end of this season we'll find out if it's supernatural or all in their heads, but I don't think I ever truly will need an answer to that. I don't mind that ambiguity.
Let me know if there's anything else you wanna know my thoughts on! Honestly I could talk about this show for hours upon hours upon hours, so I love getting asks like this! If you read this far, let me know what you're thinking about seasons 2 and 3 and hopefully 4 and 5!

Tagged by @iamskyereads and @mandosmistress 🥰
1. are you named after anyone?
No.
2. when was the last time you cried?
This week...crying is a healthy, expressive thing. And ever since @iamskyereads shared the cool (and sourced cuz yay science) fact that "tears are structurally different depending on the emotion," I think about that now when I shed a tear. 😊 When will I next cry? DURING TLOU HBO EPISODE 1 obvs 😭.
3. do you have kids?
No.
4. do you use sarcasm a lot?
I use it sparingly, for maximum effect.
5. what’s the first thing you notice about people?
The vibe I'm getting/gut feeling.
6. what’s your eye colour?
Green.
7. scary movies or happy endings?
The world needs more happy endings.
8. any special talents?
Hmmmmm...I spent my 20s fascinated by the traditional/classical dances and cinema of India and surrounding countries, especially from the 1920s-1960s, so I'm pretty familiar with some niche things and can also pronounce transliterated words from all the major South Asian languages pretty well?
9. where were you born?
England! I was a military brat kid, and we moved back to the U.S. when I was a tiny bebe. My mom has always told me the doctor who delivered me WORE A THREE-PIECE SUIT...(was that a thing? or was she delirious? 😆).
10: what are your hobbies?
READING FIC, assorted pedro fandom activities, reading nerdy research via sci-hub, composing ambient music bedroom-producer style, getting my emotions out on the piano, communing with cute animals and critters, collecting anything llama or alpaca-related, cozying up to my space heater, and occasionally getting off my bum and enjoying the great Utah outdoors.
11. have you any pets?
Two Blue Death-Feigning beetles in a little cute glass terrarium 😆. Most low-maintenance pet ever. They are seriously cute for a beetle, and have such a pretty pale blue color? These aren't mine but look at these lil guys (photo by Rocío Guzmán):

12: what sports do you play/have you played?
I consider myself the least sports-literate person I have ever met, is how I will answer that question. 😊
13: how tall are you?
5′5″
14. favourite subject in school?
In college, a medical anthropology class "blew my brain wide open," to use the phrase of our beloved Pedrito.
15. dream job?
This question again. 😊 Well...if I could be guaranteed no stress or pressure or hard deadlines 😆...a consultant or something where I'm sought out for my expertise and get to focus and immerse myself on one project at a time. Basically the complete literal opposite of the pulled-in-all-directions, multi-task-fest, unpredictability of my current exec assistant job.
Totally no pressure tags if anyone wants to play that hasn't already: @imtryingmybeskar, @davnittbraes, @skyshipper, @heythere-mel, @just-here-for-the-moment, @the-scandalorian, @galactic-basic, @lowlights

The Drop (2014)
Bob Saginowski, a barman, becomes entangled in an investigation after the mafia-run bar where he works is robbed.
Tumblr media
JayBell: This was an almost blind pick on our part. I had never heard of this movie at all, but Tom Hardy is in it, so why not give it a shot. Plus, a crime drama is right up our alley.
First of all, Tom Hardy’s accent takes a bit to get used to. Aside from that, the persona of his character in the first part of the movie is like likable idiot? Disheveled himbo? Oblivious bystander? Whatever you want to call it, he really plays up this personality to make the ending more dramatic and shocking. It’s actually a pretty good move because it does work. Although the “big” twist at the end is heavily hinted throughout the movie, so I’m not sure how many people were actually surprised by it. With that said, it’s fun to see the change in his character at the end after seeing him bumbling along in the beginning.
The plot is solid and enjoyable, but I did think the pacing was slightly slower than I would like. Maybe that’s because we figured out the twist so soon and I was ready for “it” to be revealed and everything.
I did get frustrated with our romance in this movie. Well actually I don’t know if I would really call it a romance. It’s more like the potential of a romance. I like that they give our two characters a lot of interactions to build up a sort of friendship without going straight to the romance. Yet, in the end, I did want to smack our leading lady upside the head and ask her if she was serious. After all that happens, I honestly think maybe it would be a good idea for her to move on. Bob isn’t like the worst she could pick (especially compared to her ex), but I think she needs to get a new type.
Obviously the puppy is my favorite character.
Rating: 6/10 cats 🐈

Anzie: Soooo this weekend was suppose to be a comedic reprieve from all the heartache we’ve endured. And last second having to find a new movie since The Princess had to be unavailable after we’ve talked about the possibility of watching it for months, would usually end in disaster for our unable-to- make-a-decision-selves. But heyyy, drama is close enough to comedy right? When it has Tom Hardy in it, riggght?? HBO also had it listed as a romance- which I get I guessssss. If I found a man in the wild that looked like Tom Hardy I could consider putting up with quite a bit, not this muuuch but some. Plus it was James Gandolfini’s last movie, and we all love a good crime movie.
So. This movie. I really liked it- the plot twists were amazing. And the actors were so good with how they made their characters behave and something ALWAY feels just off so you’re on the edge of your seat- it is for sure not boring. I have to say too even tho you pick up those weird vibes and think this is going to happen or this or that- it’s still fun watching it play out and very entertaining and very suspenseful. And can we talk about how cutttttteeeeee the pupper is?!?? Bc honestly I think he gives this movie at least 3 of its points just on his own.
That being said- even though I enjoyed it - there were moments I felt like that nervous laughter meme of Julia Louis-Dreyfus bc I was constantly like what is with Tom Hardy’s character- it was like unintentionally funny to me how he kept going on about this puppy when this huge deal about the Chechen’s money is going on. It’s golden.
My one complaint, wait make it two- first the weird ex- I know he had to be a part of it - but I don’t have to like it. And second- HOW COULD COUSIN MARV?? The movies definitely worth a watch and there’s a lot of good detail and great acting - I always have that problem of separating actors and the characters like that’s Tom Hardy or James Gandolfini playing someone - but this movie sucked me in and I was able to really just enjoy the story and the shocking twists.
Rating: 7/10 Pups 🐶

Stargirl Cancellation and CW
I’m definitely disappointed about the cancellation but I think it’s nothing more than just bad timing with the Nexstar situation. I have a feeling Superman and Lois is going to face the same fate after it’s 3rd season. New owners just like cleaning house and gettting a fresh slate
It’s disappointing that all these cast and crews dedicated almost a decade to building a major DC Universe (that can be argued to be more consistent than the movies) just to throw it all in the trash in the manner of a couple of years.
tt makes me wonder if the situation with Stargirl would be different if it had moved to HBO Max. That seemingly weird crossover with Stargirl, Doom Patrols, and Titans, I think is supposed to be a full circle thing with the leftovers from the DCUniverse service
The only reason Stargirl even aired on CW was because CW was in need of programming in the 2020 summer, and it got enough buzz there to take it. I have a feeling it might have got at least another season to be equal to Titans and Doom Patrol if it had moved to HBO Max insstead. I really am curious how different the show would have turned out in that instance

https://bloodknife.com/everyone-beautiful-no-one-horny/
Super interesting article about the intersection of sexuality, politics and media at the moment.
If I recall, there's a post already floating around with commentary and discussion of, as well as the additional corollary "everything is p*rnographic and nothing is erotic."
I would be interested in your thoughts, especially in the context of the fanfiction community.
Love,
A niece :)
I must say, my nieces send their Auntie Vera the most interesting stuff. 😉
So, you want my thoughts on: everyone is beautiful, but no one is horny, as well as its dirtier counterpart: everything is pornographic, and nothing is erotic. Let’s see if I can manage something coherent before my workday starts.
Generally speaking, I see where folks are coming from with these sentiments. As pointed out in the article, there is something sexless about the MCU, at least the very little of the MCU I watched before I decided it was fucking boring and stopped watching. Has this spilled over into other films and become the norm? Honestly, I was a pretty hardcore film buff for much of life, but around 5 or 6 years ago instead of going to the movies maybe 20 times a year and gobbling up everything else on DVD when it hit the library, I started going zero times and only grabbing stuff at the library or checking it out streaming on occasion. This makes me pretty unqualified to talk about the state of film today, but the article’s general premise that the MCU is about action figures not action heroes seems pretty accurate. They’ve all been Ken dolled, and for me, that’s a yawn. (There’s a lot else I find dull about the MCU, but that’s not the point right now.)
The next question is why. After the 80s and 90s, which had some overly-muscled action stars and some normally muscled action stars, all of whom got to have sex, why did action "heroes" become celibate advertisements for steroids? I would suspect there are a couple explanations. As is always the case with Hollywood, the top reason is unquestionably money. For instance, I started thinking about the last time I saw a movie with a lot of action, a super buff star, and a good old-fashioned sex scene that was also hot. I came up with 300, which came out in 2006 and had a $65 million budget. (In other words, they CGIed a lot of abs for the cost of an MCU movie’s catering budget.) 300 made $70 million its opening weekend in just the US, so huzzah, it was successful. (Numbers from Box Office Mojo)
On the other hand, an MCU movie needs to make $70 million opening weekend in about a dozen different countries, and then keep making money because of the crazy budgets. For as puritanical as folks want to make the US market out to be, there are other markets with FAR more restrictive rules about what can be shown in movies. What’s the point of including a sex scene, or even a kiss, if you’re going to have to reedit for half the world? Sexless is safer for the bottom line in a global market.
And that mostly covers what I have to say about everyone is beautiful, but no one is horny, and that article in particular. I think moving to TV will actually help more with the discussion of everything is pornographic, and nothing is erotic. There seems to be plenty of sex and nudity to be had on HBO and Netflix (the two streamers I’m most familiar with), but the vast majority of it on, say, GoT or The Witcher, is decidedly unsexy. What makes it unsexy, unerotic, is a combination of things. It’s the general nihilism of the worlds (especially GoT), coupled with so much of the “sex” actually being sexual violence, and then just the overwhelming pervasiveness of naked bodies and fucking that desensitizes you to it all. (The most telling anecdote I’ve heard on this front is that GoT eventually started hiring literal porn actors to hang out in the background of scenes. This story is too good to fact check, so I’m not.)
Given that fancy outlets like HBO and Netflix clearly make money, even with the sex and nudity, why don’t they make something genuinely erotic, instead of pornographic, or at least just generally smutty? Again, there are probably a lot of factors, mostly that they think what they are doing is what audiences want, and they will continue to churn out porn as long as they believe it will make them money. But there’s something else to consider, which finally leads me to fanfic and my own writing experience.
(Ahead are definitions at least partially of my own devising, just so we’re all on the same page for the rest of the discussion.)
Smut (a fully realized story with sex scenes), porn (graphic descriptions of sex, often without a realized story), and erotica (the serious examination of character through the sexual/sensual) are different things to write and require different skills. And if my own experience is in any way typical, writing something erotic is hard. It’s way harder than smut or porn, in fact. It’s easier to show some prostitute on her knees with cum dripping down her chin than using sex to develop character in a meaningful way. (It’s also easier to shoot your leading man full of steroids than to write a good character arc to return to the movie discussion.) For instance, I’ve written a lot of smut, porn, and erotica in my time, but one of the most meaningful comments I’ve ever received on AO3 is this: “for all the amazing smut on this site, erotic joy is actually really rare, and you captured it.” It is rare, on AO3 and for me to write, because it is blasted difficult, and I think most TV shows, and movies for that matter, are going to look for the easier, safer road the majority of the time.
So, those are my thoughts on the article and the beautiful/horny and porn/erotic discussions. I feel like I should throw in some sort of “And in conclusion,” but I assume I’m not actually getting graded on this, so I’m just going to stop. 😊

Hey!
I was reading your response to the "middle america" piece. I one million percent agree. The writing has been on the wall for years. These minority middle America folks aren’t going to the theme parks, seeing films, & paying for streaming. It’s the majority of the diverse demographic of the nation. As for the statistics the data is there! Yellow Stone is literally John Wayne crap with Costner as the lead. 1923 IMO was the show I could watch cause it shows how religious white folks were demons to Native Americans.
The “middle America” pockets are not deep. Also as for Mario…..🙄….literally parents are taking their kids to see that movie twice even three times and unfortunately gamers do have deep pockets and they will watch that nonsense.
I’m thinking Comic Book films took over one decade but video game series/films could take over the next. 🤷‍♀️
Yeah, superhero/comic book/marvel bullshit fatigue FINALLY seems like it might be a real thing but unfortunately you just guaranteed that it's simply going to be replaced by something equally as damaging to the health of the industry. Comic Books/Superheroes and Video Games are two sides of the same destructive coin. Also, y'all loveeeeeeeee to type on twitter about how "Hollywood is out of ideas" because all that's happening are reboots so why do you keep showing up to watch them??? Scream 6 was just the most successful of all of the franchises. Get ready to get Scream until they hit like Scream 37. It's a self fulfilling prophecy.
There isn't one studio or streamer right now whose bulk of the development slate isn't IP/reboots/remakes. Literally. This week alone we've heard of reboots for HP, Baywatch, Barbershop, Squid Game, The Big Bang Theory, Robocop, Poltergeist, Peep Show, Pink Panther, Fame, Legally Blonde (both tv and films - WHY?!), and that's not even the full list. FFS the ENTIRE business model for HBO Max moving forward is remakes and reboots. Then you have shit like Barbie which y'all are going to make A Thing. It's why studios have no desire to go out and find the people writing new content. Y'all are going to give Barbie a billion dollars and next thing you know we're going to see shows/movies for Barney, Hot Wheels, and American Girl. It's how this industry works.
The contraction in the industry is real. There's been a contraction in film for a decade now but the idea always was "well, at least TV is still producing quality, original things". TV peaked at about 600 shows a year a couple years ago. We're already down 1/3 to about 400 and that number is going to keep going WAY down over the next few years. That means, less risk, less representation, less quality. It's ALL going to be The Same Shit For The Same People and knowing you...you're simply going to keep watching. You'll have no one to complain to when all you can watch is the 162nd season of Property Brothers, MEGAN 12, and Throne Of Games: The Story Of The Lannisters's Third Cousin.

The Last of Us Ep 1
The much anticipated HBO show, The Last of Us, based on the PlayStation game by Naughty Dog, finally premiered last week. The game enjoyed by millions world wide has put this show in the spotlight long before it aired, bringing in big names like Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey to take on the leads, as these beloved characters, Joel Miller and Ellie Williams respectfully. Now this is not an opinion piece on casting choices, both actors have impressive roles behind their belts, and the acting in this episode will be talked about later. Going forward there will be spoilers for episode 1 of the HBO show, and this warning also goes for those who have played the game but have not seen the show yet. Here are three reasons why HBO’s The Last of Us is shaping to not only be the best video game adaption, but a solid show that can stand on its own.
When talking about video game adaptations, think The Witcher or Resident Evil, a big complaint from fans has always been a lack of following the source material. Now this is a common occurrence when any media is translated to a movie or T.V show, and yes some information has to be cut just due to formatting, but video game fans have been screwed over time and time again. When given such great material to work with, viewers and fans are often left wondering, “How the hell did you mess this up?” Luckily, that is not something that original fans of The Last of Us have to fear. When watching the first episodes, long-time fans can see the characters and game play come to life. There are shot for shot, line for line scenes coming straight from the game. And for new fans the suspense is built up gradually, the opening panel- a new original scene for the show, sets up the idea of a pandemic, a fungal pandemic. I know, the topic of pandemic may seem over done, but this reminder that we as humans are vulnerable to any kind of large moving sickness is something we should keep in our minds. Slowly the main characters are introduced, Sarah, beloved daughter of Joel and by fans, gets more depth added to her while sticking to her iconic scenes. The car scene, game fans know this exact scene, feels as if you are back in the game playing. Now with all of it’s faithfulness, the show does take creative liberty with certain scenes and moments. The opening scene, all the additional moments between Sarah and Joel and Tommy, adding higher stakes to the escape scenes. HBO is creating a fine balance between respecting the source material and fans, and creating and giving long-time fans something new and exciting to digest.
Now none of these scenes, original or new, would be as impactful without the amazing cast behind these characters. From well known names such as Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie), to newer faces like Nico Parker (Sarah). Every action packed moment, heartfelt goodbye, or intense fear that viewers can practically feel themselves, would not be possible without the stunning performances by this entire cast. Nico Parker was absolutely stunning to watch. Her role, while limited, was absolutely carried by her acting. Sarah, while being a fan favorite, is very limited in her time in the game. The beginning of the episode creates more moments, more daily life between Sarah and her family, a chance to really see who she was, and Parker delivers such a sincere, honest portrayal of her. Sarah’s love for her father can be felt through the screen, along with her fear, which adds to the ever mounting suspense that keeps all viewers on the edge of their seats. Pedro Pascal, a well known father figure already with his character The Mandalorian, has uncanny chemistry with both Parker and Ramsey. While only one is actually his daughter, at least in this first episode, the bantering between him and Ramsey carries over what fans fell in love with in Ellie and Joel’s relationship in the first place. Bella Ramsey, our Ellie, executes Ellie’s humor, a titular aspect of her character, in such a perfect way it truly is as if Ellie has come to life on screen. Truly what all these actors, from Anna Torv (Tess) and Gabriel Luna (Tommy), bring to the screen is something to behold. Impactful acting for a story that holds so much weight to so many. This project is being handled with so much care.
Finally, the soundtrack. Once again, The Last of Us’ soundtrack is being handled by Gustavo Santaolalla. Original fans of the game will recognize the iconic opening credits of the show, along with hearing the chords from the original theme, aptly titled ‘The Last of Us’. Now this is a song that fans would be able to recognize anywhere. Once again the creators are relying on the source material and in doing so, shows respect to the characters, world and audiences. Music is not only important for the audience but to some of the characters themselves. We learn that Joel operates his smuggling business by using a radio. 60’s means nothing in, 70’s for new stock, and 80’s for X. Now what does the X mean? Ellie along with viewers wonder, and in no time Ellie is able to “crack” Joel’s code. She gathers by his reaction after saying the radio turned on playing a Wham song, that 80’s must mean trouble. Now the end song playing out over the end scene as our characters have just made their daring escape is none other than Despche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down Again”, released in 1987. And what did we just learn that the 80’s meant? Trouble, and for those of us who have played the game, we know these characters are never far from it.
All in all, this is the most well done and thought out adaptation possibly to date. Riding off of high expectations, HBO’s The Last of US is exceeding most of them. Truly looking forward to the new twists they will add to an already incredible storyline, the show stopping acting, and listening for any new clues that this soundtrack can give us. Shockingly, or maybe not, this episode get’s a 5/5 and I can not wait to see if the rest of the series lives up to this groundbreaking first episode.
