society of the snow
what the heck was that. and i mean it in the best sense of the expression. i couldn't seem to take my eyes off the screen for more than ten seconds. it´s been a long time since a movie caught my breath like that, and i'm so proud that it got to be this one. i'm not uruguayan, i'm argentinian, but it is a co production and some of the cast members are argentinians so i'm proud of what everyone achieved here.
though this one is a well known story, or at least everyone in my country knows the rugby-team-andes-incident, this approach seemed necessary since we didn't have a national production of this magnitude, so well delivered, so well performed.
two and a half hour of pure emotion. it feels like you are part of the team, you are there with them, you suffer, you struggle, you cry, you can feel it all and that's why i think this movie deserves the recognition is getting.
if you don't know what i'm talking about, 'society of the snow' tells the story of an uruguayan rugby team whos plane crashed in the middle of the andes while they were flying to chile. they had to struggle to survive in the snow dessert for more than seventy days, doing things no one would ever think of. it's heartbreaking, but really worth watching. i encourage you all to do so!
PS: i used to write movie reviews on my instagram account i may start doing them here because it was a hobbie i actually enjoyed until i got to known and started to feel unconfortable with that much exposure.

Let's Talk About: Disney's Wish
Tumblr media
(DISCLAIMER: It is my understanding that BDS has asked for a more targeted boycott when it comes to companies that are involved with the conflict in Gaza, and for Disney to be subject to public pressure instead. It is entirely up to individual discretion whether they want to include Disney in their personal boycott or not.)
So now that I've had a few days to let this movie kind of settle in my brain, I've been moved to write up my own comprehensive (albeit spoiler-free) review because I'm already tired of seeing Bad Faith Takes, and I have MANY THOUGHTS.
Things you should know about me prior to me launching into this review -- I am a Disney girl, I have been a Disney kid my whole life, and I've gotten really good at separating my love for Disney movies and Disney magic from my criticism of the Disney company. I've been REALLY excited for this movie pretty much since I saw the first official image of Asha and instantly fell in love with her design, and the hype only grew with the release of trailers and other promotional material. I also avoided listening to any of the songs prior to seeing the movie in theatres.
With all that being said, let's dive in.
Okay, so, first impressions -- I LOVE this movie. I am absolutely the target audience for Disney magic and nostalgia for Disney movies, and I love the idea of this movie being a kind of love letter to the now 100 year long legacy of Disney movies. A lot of the little nods, references, and Easter eggs in this movie worked for me. All in all, seeing this movie in a theatre absolutely felt like a warm hug, and I can already see it becoming a sort of comfort movie for me personally.
I can tell that a lot of love went into the creation of this movie -- if the animation style or the music isn't your thing, that's completely understandable, but it rubs me the wrong way to see people acting as if they're objectively bad, when that's definitely NOT the case. In fact, they're quite GOOD; I would go so far as to say that the music and animation of this film are its two greatest strengths.
I've seen some criticism of the fact that the songwriters who worked on this movie are pop songwriters and not musical songwriters -- but I personally feel that this unique stylistic choice really WORKED for this movie, and made it stand out from other Disney movies. This movie has some of my personal favorite songs that Disney has ever produced.
As for the animation, the blending of 2D and 3D animation is en vogue at the moment, and I love seeing how different movies use the style in different ways (i.e. the comic book style of the Spider-Verse films, the cartoony style of The Bad Guys, the moving painting effect of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and the grimy, graffiti style of TMNT: Mutant Mayhem). For Wish, this movie is literally a LIVING STORYBOOK, and the animation is absolutely indicative of that. This is a GORGEOUS movie.
(It's also hardly the first time that pop songwriters have written for Disney movies, or even for musicals in general, but that's a whole other kettle of fish.)
With all that being said, I definitely have my criticisms of this movie -- all of which go back to issues with the STUDIO that effected the finished product. Wish has a rich, lush world with hints of deeper lore, but I feel that this movie really suffered from being "the Disney 100 legacy movie." Like I said, I love Disney nostalgia, but this movie takes it to a level where it can be distracting, and I ultimately feel that it wasn't given enough room to really be its own, individual thing. This is, at the end of the day, meant to be an original fairy tale -- and there are absolutely loose threads and hints at storylines and character arcs that were just….left incomplete.
I really think that the writer's strike ended up effecting the final product of this movie negatively, and resulted in an unfortunate waste of potential. In an ironic way, I kind of wish they HAD delayed the release date so that they could work on it more, but again, it was the "Disney 100th anniversary movie" so the release date was a part of that as well.
This movie feels like it should be so much BIGGER than it is, and that the story should have paid off in ways that it just DIDN'T -- because of a lot of aspects of the film being shoved into the prototypical, and frankly lazy Disney boxes.
I feel so strongly that Wish really was on the verge of being something revolutionary, and through unfortunate circumstances and poor choices made on the part of the studio, it wasn't able to fulfill that full potential, and that's such a shame. I personally am really hoping for sequels -- or at least, fanfiction tends to fix everything.
Comparing this movie to other Disney movies, such as Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Encanto, all of those movies tell a fully fleshed out, cohesive story, with character arcs that feel natural, and really strong themes that challenge our expectations. The sad fact is that Wish doesn't have this -- it TRIES, and there's very much elements of that present, but it's only HALF of a story, really. It feels unfinished, or like it wasn't allowed to push the envelope in the ways that the creators likely wanted to (at least that's my impression).
At the end of the day, it is REALLY impressive that Wish is as good of a movie as it is, with all of this in mind. Every other aspect of the film is VERY strong, and there are some important, powerful messages that shine through (strong messages about the power of self esteem and self love, and the power of community coming together). But the story is ultimately what unfortunately suffered here, due to what is more than likely yet another case of there being too many cooks in the Disney kitchen.
So, yes -- I LOVE this movie, but more than that, I am in love with everything that this movie COULD and SHOULD have been.
That being said, I will continue to aggressively love this movie. Out of spite :P
(I will also likely go into more spoiler-y, specific depth on this movie once it's out internationally after the holidays, and once more people have had a chance to see it -- idk if you guys can tell just from reading this but I am suffering alone in hyperfixation HELL right now :P)

The new Godzilla x Kong movie is kind of boring
Is like, I don't have a problem with your movie being just about giant monsters fighting each other. But you have to make all the fighting, you know, actually entertaining.
Let me explain: there is plenty of colossal monsters here, but since they spend like 90% of the movie in Hollow Earth (aka where everything is at scale to them), they just look like regular sized creatures.
And their fights are not even filmed in a fun way, except maybe the final battle.
Also all the stuff with Mothra feels like it was added late in production because she keeps appearing and disappearing at random during the climax of the movie.
Also x2: why is Godzilla even in the title? He is in this for like 20 minutes.
Best part is the sub-plot of Kong becoming friends with the little monkey.

The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (Movie Review)
Tumblr media
While exploring the Sesame Street tag on tumblr, I discovered that there have been some Sesame street movies made! I figured as long as I'm revisiting the show, I can check these films out too.
Tumblr media
Elmo is having a rough day! Poor little guy.
Elmo wakes up one day and starts having fun with his favorite blanket, which seems to be sentient(?). Unfortunately, he accidentally spills juice on it, so he takes it to the laundromat to get cleaned. Once he gets the blanket out, though, things start to go wrong for Elmo. He gets in a fight with his friend Zoe, and then ends up losing the blanket, which ends up in Oscar's trash can and as Elmo goes to retrieve it, he ends up in Grouchland! Once there, a big meanie named Huxley steals his blanket, and Elmo embarks on a quest to get it back, making friends and learning a lesson about the importance of sharing and thinking of others.
Tumblr media
Elmo in Grouchland definitely has a different feel that the regular Sesame Street show - it feels much more like a traditional Muppet Movie where the usual educational material is replaced with a main story, and plenty of humor. This is actually a fun way for older adult viewers to enjoy these characters, because it strikes a very nice balance the wholesomeness of Sesame Street and the more adult (but not overly mean spirited) humor of The Muppet Show.
Tumblr media
Grouchland is junky, dirty, weird and cool!
The setting of the movie was a big hit for me too - Grouchland feels like a love letter to every person who enjoyed the weird gross-out humor that became popular in the 90s. Characters like Boogerman would be right at home here, and also like Boogerman ( I gotta show love for one of my favorite old games), it's got a fair amount of grimy visuals and gross out/toilet humor that still manages to be cute rather than nauseating. I love it!
Tumblr media
Another fun and Muppet-like trait the movie has is that the humor is occasionally very self-aware. Bert and Ernie show up many times through the movie to comment on what's going on, with Bert often being very worried about Elmo and his husband needing to console him.
Tumblr media
The greedy villain, Mr. Huxley!
Overall, it's a really cute and fun movie that I'd recommend, especially to any fan of Jim Henson's Muppets. It's got a lot of humor and heart, fun set pieces, and Muppet magic! There's another Sesame Street film I've found, called "Follow That Bird", which I hope to review next!

Red, White and Royal Blue was really cute. It had all the markings of a Hallmark Movie. The plot was adorable. The cast was okay. I only recognized a few of the cast. Other than the two leads, the other characters were bland and boring and I couldn't even tell you their names.
The romance wasn't forced at all. I could really feel the guys falling in love with each other. I am not a fan of ANY kind of sex scene. However, the sex scenes in here were alright. I only had to tip my notebook up and away from me for a few seconds.
Overall it was enjoyable. 9.98 out of 10.
The cake scene was ridiculous and cringe and my second hand embarrassment was off the scale and it was not funny at all. I deducted the points for that scene alone. So, almost 10 out of 10.

I watched Netflix's The Sea Beast. It's pretty shit tbh.
Why?
1) It had boring character designs. MC guy is just generic Walmart Flynn Rider and the Captain is just Walmart Long John Silver from Treasure Planet. Also why are their names so forgettable? Jacob Holland? That's just a guy.
I thought the designs of the monsters were also super lazy. Red is just red which makes no sense considering she wouldn't be able to blend in with her natural habitat, the Ocean. Blue is cute and I do love it but the nit-picky side of me wonders why it has the light bulb on its head like an Anglerfish when it doesn't live in a dark environment. Basically they don't look adapted to their habitats which makes me think the creators didn't bother with any sort of thoughtful world building.
2) The plot and music were very predictable with the music carrying the more emotional parts of the movie. Honestly, the emotional parts felt like they only happened to tick-off plot points, thats how predictable it felt. Sweet innocent child befriends sentient monster who end up saving eachother. I usually like that trope but with age I'm getting tired of it lol ☠️ she also befriends the Jaded Adult™️ but the sad part is I felt no chemistry between them. The two main characters are supposed to be like a found family by the end of the film but it didn't feel real. Maybe it's because they literally only knew eachother for a few days. 🤔 But also the bad writing. Honestly none of the characters deviated from their character tropes so none of them felt real.
3) The dialogue felt awkward and unnatural. Especially the kid. She doesn't say things a kid her age would (her voice actor was really good though). But it's a pet peeve of mine when writers mess this up. It's not just her either. A lot of the characters just say generic things that we've all heard before. Lazy imo.
Anyway, now for the positives! 💖
1) The overall message of the movie was good and educational, "be weary of the content you consume as it might not be coming from reliable sources". Even if it was explained in a very heavy handed way, that's to be expected from a kids movie. (Absolutely zero nuance lol).
2) I liked the character development that Walmart Flynn goes through. The Captain and him were good parallels to eachother in regards to their morals and values. They started out the same but ended up choosing different paths. 👌
3) I also liked the detailed backgrounds and pretty colour pallets. Also the animation itself was great. It's just a shame it was wasted on such a boring story.
Overall, just watch How to train your Dragon instead. It had the same themes but done a lot better with better characters and better everything else. It also didn't bore me out of my mind unlike The Sea Beast. 2/10

You may remember this post I made at the beginning of the year, about “The Man Who Laughs” being public domain. Well, I looked after my boss’ kids a couple of nights ago, and once I finally convinced them to go to bed, I started to watching it for the first time on their large movie projector! [mild spoilers ahead].
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I only managed to watch half an hour of it, because the parents came home (and asked what I’d been watching 😳 Had to explain my weirdness).
I finished it the next day on my own (considerably smaller) TV.
Tumblr media
(The format didn’t work too well on my television, some of the picture was missing on both sides, annoyingly).
It was so good! It put me through a lot of stress, because while I’d read that Gwynplaine had a happy ending, I was still so worried something bad would happen to him, Dea, Urus or Homo.
It felt similar to “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, but also very different at the same time. Gwynplaine is the only Universal “monster” character to have been a leading man, and to have not been killed off at the end.
Look at them 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I couldn’t help but laugh every time this guy showed up. Look at his goofy face 🤣
Tumblr media
It was nice not to feel emotionally destroyed after a tragic movie for once (well, I was a little bit scarred - Gwynplaine had so much inner pain 😖)

Okay so I just saw the new Dungeons and Dragons movie
gotta say from the moment they went with the "let's dive out the window onto the Aarakocra" plan even as the council was like "WE PARDONED YOU" I knew it would be great because that is the exact kind of stupidity a D&D party would get up to

one of the things that annoys me so bad right now is seeing letterboxd reviews about Lisa Frankenstein being like "she's such a horrible character", "those people didn't deserve to be killed" blah blah blah
SHUT UP
it's a horror romance!! a girl keeps a reanimated dead guy in her closet and falls in love with him! what did you think was going to happen? it's SUPPOSED to be fucked up and weird and that's part of its charm. quit being boring, let female characters (esp in horror) be messy and chaotic and morally gray.

Saw Kung Fu Panda 4 yesterday.
Don't waste your time, the movie is very mediocre and a big step down for the franchise.
The writing feels more like a direct-to-streaming special than a theatrical movie.
Also of all the returning villains only Tai Lung gets speaking lines (and he is only in the film for like 10 minutes).
The Furious Five appear only during the credits and they don't even get any lines.
I kind of like the new character Zhen, I found her entertaining.

Pretty Canoe (Short Film Mini-Review)
Tumblr media
Next up in my Fayetteville Film Festival Review series is a tense action/drama short film titled "Pretty Canoe".
Tumblr media
Two prisoners, Terrance and Davis, have escaped prison and sought refuge at one of their cousins house. They plan to stay the night and then use a boat to escape to the Mexico border in the morning. Unbeknownst to them, there are many surprises in store that will derail their plans.
Tumblr media
In addition to telling a good little story in only 20 minutes, the film also touches on the danger of relying on nostalgia to make one's decisions, so it's got a nice subtext to it as well. The film has a couple twists towards the end - one of which I saw coming - but the other was more effective and showed just how clever and quick-thinking one of the characters is once it's revealed, which was cool.
Tumblr media
As long as you aren't squeamish about profanity and some mild violence, I definitely recommend this little short. It's a great little thrill ride.
Tumblr media
You can watch it here on youtube:
