She has let Abby go and now has to live with the actions. Consumed by guilt and fear, she has confined herself to her home. That is until Tommy comes to Ellie with news from his latest excursion.

Tommy has learned of another immune woman located in a small refugee city in Oregon. With his business unfinished there, he offers Ellie a chance to leave Jackson and find her. When Ellie does, she finds herself roped into a world of family secrets, missing people, and feelings she tries desperately to push away. But maybe this is what it will take for Ellie to finally learn to heal.

NOVA SERVOPOULOS HAS ninety-nine problems but the Infected aren't one. Somehow, someway, whenever she encounters an Infected, they don't sense her. They just ignore her, like she's not even there. Her mother, Tess, has made her promise that she would never speak of it to another soul. Not even Joel knows, that's how important it was.

Tess cared too deeply for her daughter to become one of their failed experiments for a cure, she was not willing to let her daughter sacrifice herself for the rest of the world, even if it meant they'd continue to live like this. And to be fair, neither did Nova. She was born into this world and had grown up, far too used to it than she should be, and didn't want to leave her mother alone.

And then comes a fourteen-year-old girl with a smart-ass mouth that the leader of the Fireflies is desperate to keep safe and get across the country for, and that peaks Nova's interest. Her interest only grows when she finds out that the girl, Ellie, was bitten two weeks ago but has yet to turn into an Infected. The two are the same, yet completely different, and Nova wants to know more.

How could she possibly know right then and there that meeting Ellie Williams would be both the best and worst moment of her life?

Catalina Rivas should be dead. She should have died a dozen different times over the course of those first few weeks, when everything went to hell. Her husband did. So did her parents. And she gave up on her sister long ago. Yet she kept surviving. The soldiers, the clickers, the roving hunters who would have hanged her from a tree in an instant, she survived them all, only to continue on through a world that left her empty as it quickly erased her memories of a life from before.

Joining the Miller brothers didn’t really change things. 

In the beginning, they were just two more people who would eventually die, more bodies to litter her already overflowing nightmares. But they were survivors too, and just like her, empty and broken, somehow less human than they once were. The three of them navigated a world only fit for the strong, and incredibly lucky, becoming perhaps too adapted to it. 

When Tommy joined the Fireflies, Catalina went with him, searching for meaning in her life beyond the death that surrounded them. When Tommy left the Fireflies, she still remained. Doctors, they said, were a rare breed, and she hadn’t been a doctor in so long. Sometimes, she forgot she even was one. 

But she never forgot Joel. A piece of him stayed with her wherever she went, those dark eyes full of hurt and betrayal. But listening to her heart was the worst decision she could make. Staying, she told herself, was not an option, yet when she gets word that Marlene has him taking a kid across the country, leaving was the only thing she could do.
