Fic Writer Wrapped- 2023 Edition
I did this in 2022 and 2021, and am revving it back up for my own personal interest in tracking these things. Tagging anyone reading this if you want to participate!
Like in previous years, this is about fic published on ao3 in 2023 (not amount of words written in 2023, which I don't keep track of).
How many stories did you complete?
I completed one longfic (more than 100k words), eight medium fics (between 15k and 100k), and forty-two short fics (under 15k). Just like last year, I continue to have considerable lag between writing and publishing. The longfic and some of the medium fics were mostly written in 2022, but published and finished this year.
What is your total word count for the year?
547,416 words
What fandoms did you write in this year?
I really committed to the multi-fandom bit. I also discovered an addiction to cdramas. I wrote in Harry Potter, Tolkien, The Grisha Trilogy, Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen, Emma - Jane Austen, Twilight, the Locked Tomb, House of the Dragon, 陈情令 The Untamed, 山河令 Word of Honor, 苍兰诀 Love Between Fairy and Devil, 莲花楼 Mysterious Lotus Casebook, 无量 Wúliàng, and 长月烬明 Till the End of the Moon.
Did you write more, less, or roughly about what you expected?
This year's published word count borrows from many projects that were written in 2022, probably about 150k words' worth. Even subtracting that, I wrote a lot more than I expected. Because I didn't write a long fic this year (123k of Rainbow of Chaos's total of 130k words was written in 2022), I felt like I was unproductive compared to previous years. But I actually I wrote a lot!
What’s your favorite story of the year?
To catch a fox (Grisha verse, the Darkling/Nikolai). I had a blast writing this, it felt like it wrote itself, and I think the fic is so much fun, I still enjoy re-reading it, and I'm really happy about how many other people liked it as well!
What is your most underappreciated story of the year?
This question gets harder and harder to answer every year, because the more deliberately niche I write the happier I am when I get a single comment and feel that is more than sufficient appreciation. I guess if I had to pick one, it's my Aredhel/Celegorm fic, because imo this ship deserves to be more popular than it is!
Biggest fanfic-related disappointment of 2023?
I was riding the high of discovering the Darkling/Nikolai ship after watching the TV show Shadow and Bone in March. A good friend left a prompt that I loved, in an event called Fandom Orienteer, which had a several-month-long writing period and then a posting window in August. I bit off more than I could chew when I started writing Palace in the Dark, found my ideas too plotty, and did not finish in time to post a completed story in August. By the time I actually finished over Thanksgiving, not only did I miss being part of the event, I had lost almost all my WIP readers (except my friends from the darkolai server, shout out to you, you are the best!). It's fine, the fic is finished and complete on my profile, and readers will slowly find it. But I was disappointed in not being able to finish in July for the event and when the momentum from the show was hotter.
Biggest fanfic-related surprise of 2023?
I'm surprised by how many multi-fandom exchanges I did. I was only dipping my toe into them in 2022 and was not sure the whole thing really suited me. I wrote almost forty exchange fics this year, and got some amazing gift fics in exchange, and it's been really fun.
Something you look forward to working on in 2024?
I think I'll work on more villain-centric fic for MDZS, and also hopefully write more new-to-me fandoms for exchanges.

Tell People About Your WIPs
I kind of came up with this one myself + was inspired by others but: make a list of all your WIPs with a brief description of each and then people can ask you questions about them and then tag other people.
So uh, mine are below.

Bookshelf Overview
In classic me fashion when asked a simple question, I make a very overcomplicated, unnecessary picture display on the matter. The lovely @solaarflaree asked to see the organisation of my bookshelf so here I am to walk you through it as best as I can. Did I draw over the childhood picture of me and my sister? Yes. We are going to pretend we don't notice because privacy is a thing and my editing skills are as basic as just scribbling over the image in paint.
Anyway, from my expertly taken (and by that I mean wandered upstairs and used my getting on a bit phone) picture of my bookshelf overview you can see my general setup. My shelves are all IKEA Billy bookcases (love you IKEA) and I have 12 big shelves that I use for books and 6 half-size shelves that I use to store random stuff I have been given/collected over the years and have no other place for. You may also notice that the very top shelves are actually dedicated to Red Velvet & SHINee, that is the not my entire kpop collection but they deserved their own shelves, and no I do not own every album yet because they are very expensive when ordering from the UK~
My organisation goes left to right and then onto the next shelf, not all left and then all right, which will make more sense when I explain down below.
Shelf Details
Looking at my shelves more closely, I organised the pictures how the shelves are meant to be viewed to give the best idea of how my books are organised. The easiest way to explain it/show them is to say that the middle block of shelves act as a decorative buffer but ultimately my shelves follow a left to right sweep with a small break in the centre. You can see this easily when the pictures are put together by looking at my Hunger Games books, you can see the books jump from the left hand shelves to the right hand shelves rather than going underneath. I essentially view my long shelves as one long shelf, rather than two separate bookcases, and so I will explain them as such.
Starting with the top two images you can see that right now I have my graphic novels separate to the rest of my books, that is really just because of spacing, sometimes they are grouped at the very front too, it all depends on where I can squeeze them in. Then going to the immediate right you will see my cute mug that houses all my bookmarks and this is where my books essentially begin. It starts with books that are compilations i.e. there is not one author featured to alphabetise them, so they are oranised alphabetically by book title. From 'P.S. I Love You - Cecelia Ahern' we officially move into the alphabetised section, these books are alphabetised by the author's surname and this is generally how all my books are organised. The only thing that overrules alphabetising is chronology within a series, which takes president e.g. you will notice that my Leigh Bardugo books are organised both alphabetically (starting with Ninth House) and then chronologically (the Grisha verse books are organised in the order they were written/that the story follows).
Also yes there is a random book stacked on top of the others, that is because I bought it literally two days ago and like a moron didn't notice it was a sequel until I got home, so it is like that to remind myself to buy the first book before I put it away.
This order continues pretty much throughout until we reach the bottom left picture, on the very bottom shelf, where you will see 'The Book Thief - Markus Zusak'. At this point the organisation changes slightly again, though there is still a running theme of alphatisation throughout.
Here I start with a very, very (literally two) small collection of non-fiction books and then we move onto my special editions. It starts with my very old Shakespeare books and moves quickly onto my hardback collection (this section is only for special edition hardbacks, otherwise you'll see hardbacks all throughout my shelves). These books are again organised first alphabetically by author and then alphabetically by novel e.g. all my Jane Austen books are together but they are further organised alphabetically by title rather than chronology, this is because the books are stand alone rather than a series. After my hardbacks you'll see I have a few paperback special editions, these came together as a set so I have kept them that way rather than splitting them apart by author, although within the sets I've organised them alphabetically by author.
Then we move onto my poetry collection. Poetry again is organised first by author's surname, then by series/chronology. This is easiest to see with my Amanda Lovelace collection, where all her books are grouped together by the series they come in and the order they were published. At the end of my poetry collection is again compilations, books where there isn't just one author, so they are placed at the very end of the shelf as to not get mixed in with everything else. Finally, I have a few books that are just huge and don't have a set place to belong so it makes sense for them to be there.
Plushy Bonus & Final Thoughts
Finally, there is a bonus picture of all my plushies that live on top of my shelves. I won't go through naming them all but they are very cute and watch over me when I sleep.
Other than that you may notice I have a lot of other random stuff on my shelves, some of it decorative and some of it just gets dumped there for convenience sake. You never know when you'll need a blob of blu tack or some scissors.
In conclusion, my way might not work for everyone but even if it makes no sense to you, I hope you enjoyed this insight into the way my mind works. If the organisation still baffles you, at the very least I hope you enjoy nosying at the kind of books I like to read and the sort of random stuff I collect~
If anyone took the time to read all of this, thank you 😘

Me and @stormkitty97 were doing another writing session last night, except this time she was helping me write a new chapter in the Heartslabyul arc. (Long story short, I'm doing another round of edits to that and Savanaclaw, which resulted in me creating a new chapter to let the exposition and worldbuilding flow out at a more natural rate.) During it, we got to talking about how TWST handles its characters. One of the issues with the game, strangely, is that the boy don't act twisted enough.
Take the whole Playful Land situation. Honest Fellow wanted to subject the boys and Yuu to a fate worse than death by wanting to turn them into living puppets without the ability to move or speak. While I can sympathize with him growing up poor and working for an asshole boss, that's still incredibly fucked up and is sheer nightmare fuel. What happens? He walks away scott free to create his own school. Everyone shrugs it off like he just bumped into them at a shop. The fuck? Why weren't they mad at him and retaliated against him? He literally wanted to subjugate them to a fate worse than death! If the Dregs were ever put into a similar situation, even if it's impossible thanks to how the magic system works in the Grisha Verse, but the sake of argument, let's say it works similarly to TWST, then I can see Kaz flipping the magic that Honest Fellow wanted to use on him on himself. No one messes with him or his Crows, especially Inej! I would expect the NRC boys, especially Vil, Leona and Ace, to do something similar, since they are based on villains.
Similar thing goes for the Masquerade event. As dark as it sounds, I would've expected Malleus to shove Rollo off the tower, especially since he's a fae and has an inherent spiteful, cruel and sadistic streak for those who cross him.
It also goes in general as well. After the OB boys do some pretty fucked up shit, everyone immediately shrugs it off and never get the slightest bit upset. The only one to be realistically angry and upset afterwards is Ace, who snaps at Riddle for being a selfish brat and that he wouldn't easily forgive him. Even then, people berate him for not reading the room...despite the fact that he's absolutely right.
It's asinine. Most of these guys are based on villains, so you would expect the boys to show their dark side more and do more morally questionable acts like exacting their revenge, but they don't as often as you'd think. I think the SOC books/the S&B show handled these morally grey teen/young adult characters much better than TWST. To be honest, one of my goals in my writing is to make the NRC boys like the Crows—good people with a twisted side, who do some messed up shit at times and must face the music for their actions just like anyone else. I don't care if it doesn't exactly fit canon. It's just better writing.

( Hello hi i am once again making edits to my muse list bc I have no self control and bc I am now obsessed with the Grisha-verse sooooo expect Alina, the Darkling, Nikolai, and Zoya to all be added to the list soon )
But! Instead of redoing my character directory for the millionth time, I decided to make a Google Site instead and just have everything all in the one website. I’ll share the link once I get it finished! )

Alina Starkov edit! Returning to my GV roots. Life’s been a little nuts as of late. Finally mustered up enough courage to delete my unsalvageable drafts 🥲 and made my first edit in over a month. Hope you like it. I’m proud of myself :)

1, 4 for OT3 verse!
What are they dressing up as for Halloween: Faramir, Arwen and Aragorn. (I will also accept Boromir, Aragorn and Arwen with the kids as tiny baby hobbits or elves depending). I just think it would be extremely Neat. Or a Pirates of the Caribbean one. And not to be all Tumblr but also Tumblr but a Dracula themed version (Thomas is obviously Jonathan Harker (book version)).  Also I have to say Arthurian (2004 King Arthur Movie Edition).
A sci fi or fantasy AU (depending) about them: me approximately fifty levels deep in Grishaverse ‘listen a Grishaverse Tudors AU fusion totally works (that is Tudors but they have Grisha powers)’ and also Henry is the sun summoner, Anne can turn into a dragon (DUH), Prince Thomas is a sun summoner (or a healer possibly) and Thomas? Thomas might be the Just A Guy but also I could absolutely see heartrender there? (But I’m not sure @quillington thoughts? Like I can also see Henry just being a regular Grisha of some sort - I just associate him with the sun so much).
ask me poly ship questions?
