Why Luigi Is An Awesome Comfort Character

Luigi, the younger yet taller brother of the iconic Super Mario. Luigi has proven to be an essential character throughout the many years he's been around. This green plumber had my heart from the moment I saw him jumping around on my colorful screen. Nintendo did a beautiful job with his complex character portrayal. This Italian man is courageous, kind, and affectionate because of his unwavering love towards his friends/family.

Unfortunately Luigi is often times overshadowed by his more renowned sibling, Mario. This puts Luigi into the position of the underdog. Him being an underdog helps the audience to connect with him. What can I say? I love relatable people (like Luigi). Mario is in the spotlight because of his fearlessness and strength. Luigi however, is more timid, cautious, and just overall more nervous. This causes the duo's dynamic to have more depth. It helps make their relationship special.

Luigi's anxious nature humanizes him. He faces things that scare him to no end plus his insecurities all for the sake of protecting his loved ones. He's extremely selfless. This highlights his strength of character and determination. I swear these two brothers are some of the most determined people I've ever met lol.

In most video games, the hero is fearless and bold but Luigi on the other hand is the exact opposite. We will typically see Luigi shaking with apprehension. It's like a breath of fresh air because of its originality. It offers a deviation from the common norm for heroes. Luigi may be afraid of a lot of things but he isn't afraid of being authentic and genuine with his emotions. He wears his heart on his sleeve for everyone to see. I also love emotionally vulnerable men! ❤️ I'm so glad that Luigi didn't let toxic masculinity infect him!

Greenie always perseveres through any trial he may face not because he is fearless but because he is full of love. This makes the man all the more endearing because he is human. Which is a nice change of pace from the usual mainstream characters who are seemingly invincible lol.

But anyway back to Luigi being awesome. A great defining trait of this plumber is his immovable commitment to his friends and family. Despite all the foes Luigi comes across, his loyalty and willingness to risk everything he has including his life, never falters. He is a great ally to have on your side. He is always ready and willing to lend a hand even if the task is a horrifying nightmare. This unwavering devotion really drives home the point that he is an "unconditional loving" type of guy. His bond with Mario is living proof of this.

Greenie is a distinct individual living his best life in his crazy world. The combination of his timid personality trait and heroic personality trait make him a complex character. Lol the the two traits are kind of a contradiction. I love the fact that it kind of makes him a bit of a paradox. This is exactly what makes this man so enthralling to watch. You can't help but be drawn to him because of how charming he is as a character.

Because he isn't fearless it makes me feel like it's okay to embrace my imperfections, fears, and quirks! Luigi shows fans that it's okay to be different and not live up to other people's expectations! He is such a babygirl ❤️

Luigi is in fact the only person to see what a Shyguy looks like w/out his mask. In Mario tennis one trips, loses the mask & Luigi gets visibly unnerved. As maybe the only character that's had any real growth in games Luigi has an exception to his fear of ghost, the lovable Polterpup. Luigi was literally gatekept by a star gate that didn't think he was pure enough to pass. He managed to earn Bowser's respect enough for the koopa to amend his green Mario nickname.

Which is reason #50938 to love this man. Honestly, the more lore I am introduced to, the more Luigi rockets from a loveable underdog to an actual compelling and complex character. (Not that I ever doubted him, I've been projecting onto his green ass for years :D

Siblings, Origami, and Slightly Wasted Potential

Hi. Me again. I have some thoughts on Origami King and the ideal future we could have had.

Last time on the analysis show, I took a look at the characterization of Paper Luigi (which is a pretty good read, I’ve been told). This time, I’d like to build on that a little more by addressing Paper Mario’s other pair of iconic siblings- Olly and Olivia. 

Specifically, the way I believe they have the ability to parallel Paper Mario and Paper Luigi.

So, to lay out some basic facts (as is usually necessary to make a strong foundation), I’d like to talk a bit about Mario and Luigi’s relationship with one another. 

Thanks to Luigi gaining importance in the Mario series as a whole, he’s been equipped with some new abilities and stories of his own. However, thanks to Mario encompassing everything heroic under the sun, a lot of the time, Luigi tends to need to take the ‘road less traveled’ of abilities and stories. This may just be an out-of-character thing, but over time, it’s given Luigi this sort of niche that he fills compared to Mario. 

Me, personally, I like to call Mario a ‘sun sibling’ and Luigi a ‘moon sibling’. 

The sun is associated with brightness, happiness, daytime- the time that most people use to the fullest. A sunny day will bring a smile to anyone. Mario has the same happy aesthetics as the daytime, his adventures always triumphant and basking in the spotlight. 

... (And sometimes, they’re quite literally ‘sunny’ adventures.)

Compare this to the moon- the nighttime. In popular culture, the night, darkness and even the moon have been used to signify darkness, mystery. The night in and of itself is something that’s only designated to ‘night owls’- it takes a lot of active planning to stay up for a lot of the night. However, the moon itself isn’t inherently dark- people still need it to get their eight hours. Even though the night’s job isn’t the same as the day’s, it’s still important...

...when the sun is hiding away. 

That little bit of poetry aside, Luigi’s ‘dark’ and ‘against the norm’ aesthetic can be seen pretty much everywhere you look, even if you’re not much for my metaphors.

Luigi’s flagship series being all about ghost-hunting in a spooky, dark mansion...

(Which, by the way, in Mario Super Sluggers, can only be accessed at NIGHT!!! !!!) 

Luigi being the one who has access to the mysterious and vague dream world powers,

You get the point. 

Which leads me to my next point: Olivia and Olly are also Sun Sibling and Moon Sibling.

I’m sure this is fairly obvious to anyone who looks. Olivia is bubbly, excitable, friendly, and kind.

Olly is, um.

Not that. 

(Oh also, their colour schemes the ‘night’ and ‘day’ colour schemes of Scorching Sandpaper Desert. So there’s that.)

So now we’ve established that 

But here’s the thing. Siblings is not the same. See, there’s something different about Olly and Olivia compared to Mario and Luigi.

Olly is the older sibling. And just like that... Luigi’s primary reason for being a ‘moon’ sibling is just straight-up not available to Olly. Luigi got his quirks from being in Mario’s shadow, but Olly is new... fresh. He just is this way. It’s not a phase, CRAFTSMAN. 

This poses some... interesting ideas when it’s presented next to the Mario brothers, though. Olivia is the younger sibling, who seems to look up to Olly just as much as Luigi looks up to Mario. Or at least... she’d like to. 

Despite having LITERALLY NO EVIDENCE to believe this, Olivia spends the entire game saying that she believes Olly can be talked down from this. She almost treats Olly and his entire evil plan as two separate entities, almost like Olly is a damsel she has to rescue. Don’t get me wrong, she never shies away from saying her brother needs to be stopped, but considering what seemingly little reason Olly gives for her to believe he’s worth saving... (sorry Olly. You lived then you put your dad in a wall. Life’s tough like that. Also you put a rock on her.) She’s persistent. 

Imagine how that must feel to Mario, seeing someone- seeing a Luigi who’s not the meek, mysterious one, but just as bright and bubbly as him. They grow so close throughout all this, but... Mario isn’t HER brother. And Olivia isn’t HIS sibling. 

And neither of them forget that. Even for one second. 

It makes us almost sigh in relief that Mario is such a good role model to both Olivia and Luigi, because Olivia shows us this idea of the underdog sibling not HAVING a forever-kind older brother. It’s... kinda sad. No, really sad. Olivia and Olly WANT to be a pair, but neither of them agree. They both want to ‘save’ each other, but they must keep battling if they want their side to win. 

This on its own is pretty interesting, but I want to cover the ‘slightly missed potential’ part. If you think Olivia and Mario’s parallels are a good story bit... can you IMAGINE what Olly and Luigi would be like? 

Referencing my Luigi analysis again, I concluded that Luigi has a bit of an inferiority superiority complex- a TV trope where someone’s feelings of inadequacy are often masked by an overconfidence, trying to hide that horrible blemish. 

(Don’t worry. He gets better.) 

Now, I wouldn’t say Olly is secretly insecure or anything- far from it. He is, however, EXCEEDINGLY confident, in both his abilities and his beliefs. He truly seems to believe that the ways of origami are glorious and that folding the kingdom will be a sort of ‘rebirth’. The only thing that is motivated entirely by his rage (not that those other parts aren’t, this one is just really personal) is his wish to turn every Toad into blank paper. And why is that? 

Because the Origami Craftsman scribbled on him. It’s a blemish, and one that he keeps hidden VERY easily. (I mean, you don’t see it here, do you?) 

...Interestingly, Olly has this line here: 

He says he made Olivia ‘too perfect’. It’s backhanded, sure, but... it’s still a compliment. He thinks his sister is perfect. She is perfect. He is blemished.

The sun sibling is perfect...

The moon sibling isn’t. 

This is why I think Olly and Luigi should have had some form of interaction. Luigi is this perfect mentor figure for the young king. Even though he wouldn’t be able to make a dent in Olly’s ideology or Toad-hating, there is one thing... one thing Olly might still be able to turn to the good side for. 

His sister.

Despite the fact that Origami Castle gets folded to life before Mario’s very eyes, which is when Olly has asked time and time again for Olivia to join him, and she’s still refused, the castle is still LITTERED with decorations of BOTH OF THEM. 

Olly still loves his sister. And he doesn’t want to lose her- even if he is blinded by rage. I think if Luigi was around Olly somehow, for most of the game (my personal idea would be that Luigi just can’t be folded somehow and Olly has no choice but to keep him in Peach’s Castle because he might help Mario otherwise), then he could say, from personal experience, how blind rage doesn’t solve anything... how your relationship with your sibling is the most precious thing in the world, should you keep it correctly. 

How... he KNOWS Olivia really looks up to him and looks to him for guidance, because he’s the exact same way. And how Olivia needs her big brother. 

Maybe Olly has some second thoughts, but convinces himself it’ll all be for the greater good. He just needs to defeat that red plumber. 

That green plumber’s... big brother. 

All in all, I think it could really have made Olly and Olivia even more impactful than they already are. At least they finally get reunited...

Even if it’s only for a brief moment.

What the paladins dress up as for Halloween

Lance- a lobster. A guy in my DnD group had his character dress up in a giant lobster costume and then proceeded to make zoidberg noises at npcs, and if that isn't Lance idk what is

Shiro- Goku, probably. I like the idea of Shiro being a closeted anime fan. (Matt and Shiro doing matching cosplays every Halloween? Hell yes)

Allura- Belle. She wasn't really sure what Halloween was at first- the closest they had on Altea involved dressing up as your ancestors and larping, but she's fond of these peculiar Earth traditions (especially the candy). Once Hunk showed her his favorite disney movies, she dressed up as her favorite princess.

Pidge- Hackerman. I like to think Pidge loves cheesy movies, so she would dress up as Hackerman and carry around her laptop opened to that hacker typer website and pretend to hack things. (Pentagon? HACKED. Traffic lights? HACKED. FBI helicopter? HACKED.)

Keith- an actual Paladin. From a bunch of fantasy genres. There probably wasn't much do in his desert shack, and I bet my butt there wasn't electricity, so when Keith wasn't outside scouring the countryside for traces of the blue lion, he would spend his quiet hours reading the fantasy novels his dad left behind in the shack.

Hunk- Luigi. He was never really into video games as much as Lance and Pidge were, but he always relates to the underdog characters. He sees this green mustache man with a bunch of anxiety be as big of a badass as his brother, and he can relate to that.

Bonus:

Coran- a mad scientist. Lance would help him tease his hair up to really complete the look. He would probably conjure up some Altean potions to use as magic tricks.

Matt- Reigen Arataka. The guy's already pretty dramatic, so he wouldn't have to act much to be in character for Reigen (totally not combining both my obsessions into one, why do you ask) Matt is the not-so-closeted anime fan, so he would be cracking subtle jokes during class or meetings to see if he could get Shiro to laugh

Lotor- Sheikah Link. He doesn't see the point of dressing up for a holiday he's never heard of, but if he *had* to pick, it would be that blonde fellow from that Earth game the green paladin was playing

“Dude, my man, my best bro of twelve years, are you ready?”

“Michael I was born ready.”

“Ready for what? Masturbating?”

“Michael!!”

The best feeling in the world had to be when Jeremy and Michael slipped back into their normal friendship again. Both of them never thought it’d happen, especially now that they aren’t each other’s only friend anymore. Somehow though, after a few weeks of effort, they managed to bring back a routine just like the old days. And boy, were they happy to be back in the basement again, chilling on two bean bags while Michael sets up the Nintendo 64.

Honestly this night couldn’t get any better. Jeremy had passed his final exams with way higher scores than expected, he hadn’t heard from the SQUIP in a long time, and his dad hung out with him right before he left for Michael’s. Michael had gotten a free slushee, found a sweet deal on some old retro games, and was becoming less awkward with the new friend group. To top it all off they had a bowl of party mix, a bunch of candies, and two rolled up blunts for later. It was going to be the greatest night since ever.

Michael plopped down on the bean bag next to Jeremy, leaning back and craning his neck to give the taller one a giant goofy smile.

Jeremy laughed at that, “so what game are playing?”

“What do you think, Jemmy?”

“Mario kar- I’m sorry what?”

When Jeremy turned to face Michael he saw the boy sitting there with a mischievous smirk, one that pushed his cheeks up to his eyes. His eyes held a glint that said “you heard me, boy”. See Jeremy was used to random nicknames by the other, there was even a phase where Michael had called him “Jerry baby” jokingly. Michael gave him better pet names than any girlfriend he’d ever had, and he had like…two! But…

“Jemmy? That’s a new one. Sounds like jelly.”

“It’s cute! Like you-!” The second that came out of Michael’s mouth he seemed to regret it. He instantly lost eye contact as Michael’s eyes darted around the room, his face a shade of red to rival his signature hoodie.

“Michael you think a lot of things are cute.”

“Do you not like it? I’m hurt! I give you quality names to be called by and this is how you treat me?” He held a hand to his forehead, swaying back dramatically.

Jeremy just rolled his eyes, playing around with the control as he tossed a Swedish fish into his mouth. He started to play the game, he as Luigi and Michael as Peach, then Michael picked rainbow road.

“Why do you do this to me?”

“Cause your my friend, Jemmy!”

Jeremy nearly drove right off the track, “Oh my god”

“Oh is something wrong Jemmy ? Jemmy, Jemmy, Jemmy!”

Unsurprisingly? Jeremy completely lost. There was something about that nickname and the whole way Michael said it that left his stomach with this fluttering tingle. Kinda like on those elevator drop roller coasters, you know, when they drop you. His face heated up and it was almost like…whenever Christine talked to him. Weird. Either way it was distracting and he’d lost.

Jeremy groaned as Michael swallowed up his victory and rolled in it. He took a big swig of sprite as Michael tossed his fists up and ranted about how he would always be the number one gamer.

“Ready to get your ass whooped again, nerd?” Michael smirked at him, excitement coursing through him as he happily played with the controller, ready to go.

Jeremy laughed, unable to say no to that determined face and the way Michael stuck his tongue out, “I’m the underdog now and by like, movie law, I have to win.”

“Yeah well does your movie law work with this?” Michael moved the joy key, and with a press of a button rainbow road was selected again. Dammit.

“Wha-! Dammit Michael! You’re the worst, oh my god!” Jeremy said it with a lighthearted laugh, not noticing the way Michael’s shoulders went tense. It wasn’t the first time Jeremy had said something like that of course, they tease each other like that all the time. But…now was after the SQUIP.

Jeremy prepared himself to dish out a full on beating, leaning over in his chair like a hunch back, with a way too confident smirk.

“Hey…hey Jemmy.”

“Don’t you dare start-”

“I gotta present for you, Jerm.”

“What is-”

Suddenly he was hit right off the map from a green shell, launched by no other than princess peach.

“Oh my god you’re such a nerd what the heck!” He laughed, getting right back into the swing of things once he was on track again. Michael felt his hands twitch with hesitation again, but he ignored the feeling in his gut and kept going. He had a title to uphold after all.

But then it happened again. Jeremy was behind him and Michael was too smart to just let the boy pass him, and without any tools to help him, he simply blocked Jeremy’s path.

“Cmon get out of my way loser!”

That was the last straw for the restricted beating in his heart. It broke down the bars and started rampaging like an angry gorilla in a zoo.

He felt bad, he really did. He knew he had a dependency issue and he knew that it wasn’t healthy to be so dependent on one man but…god he couldn’t help but think back to that night. Jeremy might abandon him again, leave him behind like the undeserving loser he was. No, no Jeremy didn’t mean it like that, he was being too clingy and looking to deep into it. Michael ran off the track, but when he was put back he didn’t drive. He sat there as the same music repeated itself, not realizing when it had paused. Not realizing when Jeremy had a hand on his shoulder.

“Woah, woah, Michael! …are you ok?”

Michael felt hot shame running through him. Yeah sorry man no big deal I just can’t live with the thought of you being an asshole and leaving me again. He pulled his hood up and over his head, his hands shielding his face, “yeah…yeah I’m fine. I’m sorry. I’m fine, really.”

He heard a small shuffle, and he saw the tips of Jeremy’s converse moving to face him. Jeremy must have gotten out of the bean bag and was now bent down in front of him. Jeremy wasn’t the best at comforting people, he was awkward and sweaty. But right now he’d damn well do his best for someone like Michael.

Michael felt the hand on his shoulder give a light squeeze, it was oddly grounding, “Michael…you can tell me what’s wrong, like, I’m here? I guess. Get it? Heere?”

Michael couldn’t help but chuckle, knowing Jeremy was only making those jokes to cheer him up. He took a shaky breath, focusing on the hand through the anxious fuzz in his mind. He brought a hand from his face and placed it on top of Jeremy’s.

“It’s stupid..”

“Well, not if it did this to you.”

Michael took a deep breath through his nose, the floor suddenly being the most interesting thing to look at, “I just…you know…I don’t…”

Michael’s voice wavered as little wet spots started to form on the ground, “I don’t want to lose you again.”

There was a harsh silence, one that would have convinced Michael that Jeremy had left if it wasn’t for the hand on his shoulder. He just focused on the little tear stains building up in the floor, making little splashes. He really fucked up this time. He should just keep his damn mouth shut-

A warm embrace distracted him from his thoughts, shielding him from both the world and his own thoughts. Michael quickly wrapped his own arms around Jeremy, taking in the sweet scent of blueberries, vanilla, and cigarettes from hanging out with Rich. For just a second everything felt fine.

“I’m not going anywhere, ok Michael? The SQUIP is gone…he’s gone and I- I don’t wanna lose you either”

Michael nodded, trying to stop the tears from making a wet spot on Jeremy’s shoulder with no success.

“I need you.”

“I need you too, Jemmy.”

The Main Squad's Smash Bros mains

Sachika: Corrin. Sachika is HUGE Fire Emblem fangirl and likes that Corrin uses a sword AND can turn into a dragon!(Also, Fire Emblem Fates has not one but TWO monster husbands to choose from! Score!)

Vincent: Robin, because they are both spellcasters and huge bookworms.

Boris: Some would assume he mains Wolf due to being a werewolf, but Boris actually prefers the Duck Hunt dog, who is fun and playful like himself.

Alan: He plays as Snake sometimes for the sake of the joke, but his actual main is Palutena because he likes to tease the other players with the "pole dance" taunt.

Squick: Obviously, Kirby is one of his mains, specifically the green alternate costume. He plays Peach too, but he's always been more of a fan of Daisy. Needless to say, he is SUPER excited for Ultimate!

Phil: He alternates between the Wii Fit Trainer and Sonic. The former due to his enthusiasm for health and fitness, the latter because GOTTA GO FAST.

Aaron: Luigi, because he sympathizes with his clumsiness and has always rooted for the underdog.

Hazel: Princess Zelda was her role model and childhood crush growing up, and Hazel loves her graceful spellcasting style. She also really likes Bayonetta, too.

Uno: Uno usually doesn't play very many video games, but when the others badger him to come join them, he likes to play as the Pokémon Trainer because he's reminded of his bond with Hazel as her familiar.

as a whole, i think a good ‘luigi gameplay distinction’ for that would be that the legion doesnt necessarily HAVE to get rid of him since they all think hes searching for a random unrelated key (he isnt.) so theyre not worried til he gets in their way

first of all. funniest thing for me is luigi just randomly being really good with stapler bc hes just the dog guy. like staplers like GRRR BARK BARK and ollys like go my perfect dogy and luigi just like. scratches under his neck and staplers like woof <3 and luigis like good boy :) and olly cries

luigi w colored pencils... honestly luigi is a bit of a paradox for colored pencils since hes a platformer like mario but hes the ‘underdog’ and just has. SO weird of a niche? maybe colored pencils would try to be like ‘you know what it means to be underground right? so just leave now and let me do my art’ and luigi is like no.... youre being mean :( i can imagine colored pencils having to fight against the ‘weird bro’ is frustrating for him since he cant go ‘ugh youre too mainstream to get it’

rubber band is probably a big fan of luigi bc hes a shrinking violet and thats WAY easier to write a defeat for (since its implied that the plays rubber band puts on are supposed to end with mario being defeated) and also luigi feels a bit more willing to ‘play along’ with these things (see morty + melody pianissima where he’ll usually play into the theme if he believes its a safer way to de-escalating conflict) and paper luigi also shows the canon trait of wanting his own adventures so i imagine he goes in thinking he’s the hero but then rb is like UM... NO... and its awkward 

hole punch is honestly just king boo electric boogaloo. paper luigis different from mansion luigi but honestly i can only imagine that luigi would be TERRIFIED by hole punch’s showmanship but eventually he can pull himself up by the bootstraps and just. GET him. (he might even appreciate a desert with no sun LMAO) luigi would probably ruin thrills at night not of his own volition but doing a slapstick trip into a toad and knocking them all down like a domino chain

tape and luigi bond instantly idec. luigi is a machines man and hed still 100% know tech specs from his brobot builds so hed probably marvel at tapes dispenser as tape brags about it. the second the two of them disagree though its over... luigi might not be as confrontational as he was as mr l but still. hes stubborn in his ways 

luigi and scissors. i think luigi would 100% buy into scissors’ showmanship just like hole punch but its like. its a fear that NEVER goes away. scissors doesnt play around. even if scissors is like so what does the green man think of my lovely handaconda hes just like. on the verge of fainting.

but at the same time like. i have Ideas man. luigi’s mansion and paper mario 1 seem to echo very similar ideas of luigi being the underdog, the guy who stays at home and dreams of being like his brother so like. you put that there. then sunshine and then ttyd or some shit LOOK. i have brain disease and i like to think spm is just. a climax in the mario universe. like the “mario is the hero and luigi is the useless number two” that society (toads) push onto them gets fucking shattered because luigi IS one of the four heroes of legend. and being a bad guy is just insecurity 100. but the whole mr l thing just brings them closer TOGETHER mario and luigi are no longer stopped by society they have each other they don’t need some bitch toad’s approval. because why are the toads so mean to luigi anyways?? hes saved people just as much as mario has now and everyone still calls him green like fuck you little mushroom idiots girlboss toadette is the only one i respect. even if she did try to trap me in hell. anyways that’s when the new super series and stuff comes along because luigi is by marios side. but after THAT that is mario and luigi because then and only then do they become a TEAM. they are in sync. their bodies and minds in a bond of brothers. they hug always.
