Note
I hc that even after being made partner in the counting house, it still takes Scrooge a few months to fully feel comfortable calling Marley "Jacob" instead of "Sir" or "Mr. Marley." He also gets silently flustered the first few times Jacob introduces him to others as his new fancy title.
I the movie they're actually on a first name basis even before Scrooge makes partner (a detail that I always find VERY interesting 👀) but I agree, it would have taken Scrooge long time to get used to calling him Jacob.
And I can definitely imagine him getting nervous when he has to outwardly present himself as an equal partner as well!

writing patterns
[list the first line of your last ten fics and see if there's a pattern.]
Thanks for the tag, @saintsenara!
1. Reborn from the Ashes
Azkaban was dark despite the midday sun overhead and cold in a way that had nothing to do with the freezing late December weather.
2. With All My Heart and Soul
Regulus Black awoke in a familiar bedroom, beneath green and silver silk draped over the top of a large four-poster bed.
3. Luna Lovegood and the Not-Quite-Friends
Luna didn’t have friends.
4. Lioness
At eleven years old, Molly Prewett tagged along after her older brothers as they made their way down the corridor of the Hogwarts Express, holding fast to Gideon’s hand and watching Fabian with wide eyes as he chatted with his friends, occasionally reaching over to ruffle her hair and introducing her as his “baby sister.”
5. In Another Life
The old wooden trunk was nearly full, with shirts stacked haphazardly beside piles of textbooks, Quidditch gear, and a stash of fanged frisbees.
6. Walnut and Dragon Heartstring
The walnut wand had been in Ollivander’s shop for too long, its dragon heartstring core calling out silently for the person worthy to wield it.
7. Narcissa's Christmas Carol
Regulus Black was dead, to begin with.
8. A Destiny Written in Ink
In the dim light of the cellar, Luna squinted to see the writing.
9. Fairy Lights
Slughorn’s Christmas party was always a highlight of the holiday season, and this year was no different.
10. Starlight and Snowmen
On the first of December, Ted Tonks returned home to the cottage he shared with Andromeda and found the living room filled with stars.
So, I do notice a few patterns. First of all, they overwhelmingly start off with some combination of setting and/or main character. Only two fics (5 and 7) don't make any mention of either one, and four of them (4, 6, 8, and 10) include both. Yes, the wand itself is the main POV character in 6.
Most are sort of mid-length sentences of between 10 and 25 words, with two that are under 10 words (3 and 7) and one that is very long (4). It's worth noting that the longest sentence came from a fic that was written, edited, and posted within a 24 hour period, so it might have ended up being split into two sentences if I had a more involved editing process, as I did with some of the others.
7 is an obvious outlier, in terms of both content and length, which makes a lot of sense. It was inspired by A Christmas Carol, and I was imitating the first line of the novel - "Marley was dead, to begin with" - but substituting in the character who plays the Jacob Marley role in my fic. So it's not really representative of my own writing style or how I would normally start a fic.
I've got no clue who's done this already and who hasn't, so I think I'll just do an open tag. if you're seeing it and you want to do it, go for it!

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022)
Tumblr media
I actually watched this last year, but for some reason didn't review it. Anyway, I needed a re-watch to remember all the gory details.
This Netflix animation is a good one, friends. They've really hit their sweet spot with Christmas animation. It's the classic Christmas ghost story we know and love with Ebeneezer Scrooge (Luke Evans) introduced at the top as a miser with a soft spot for his dog, Prudence. Honestly, the addition of Prudence made this redemption arc a lot more believable for me. Anyway, so, Mr. Scrooge bumps into his nephew Harry Huffman (Fra Fee), who invites him to Christmas dinner as Mr. Scrooge is shaking down Tom Jenkins (Giles Terera) for 25 pounds on Christmas Eve. Of course, Tom Jenkins doesn't have it and Scrooge doesn't have patience for Tom or Harry (maybe he would for Dick, but who's to say), so Scrooge doubles his debt and heads back to his office with Bob Cratchit (Johnny Flynn).
As usual, the first ghost who visits Scrooge is his late business partner, Jacob Marley (Jonathan Pryce). He tells Scrooge about how his greed in life lead to him being chained in death and how Scrooge needs to change his ways to save himself.
Then, the ghost of Christmas Past (Olivia Colman) shows up and takes him through past Christmases with his sister Jen (Jemima Lucy Newman), his old love Isabel Fezziwig (Jessie Buckley), and his old boss Mr. Fezziwig (James Cosmo). Scrooge relives some of the best and worst moments of his life.
The second ghost, of course, is the ghost of Christmas Present (Trevor Dion Nicholas). Present shows him Harry's Christmas party that Scrooge blew off yet again where Harry's wife Hela Huffman (Sheena Bhattessa) goes on about how much Scrooge sucks. A similar scene unfolds at the Cratchit residence during toasts.
Finally, the silent ghost of Christmas Yet to Come takes Scrooge to the future where we find Tom Jenkins and all the other people who owe Scrooge money are celebrating his death with song and dance. Inappropriate, but I would do the same if one person dying meant my student loans stopped existing. Scrooge also discovers the unfortunate death of Tiny Tim Cratchit (Olliver Jenkins and Rupert Turnbull).
We know that when Ebeneezer Scrooge wakes up on Christmas day, he's a changed man and he saves Tiny Tim and makes up with his nephew Harry. It's a classic story told several times in several different ways. So what's special about this one? Well, the original songs are a nice touch. It's a little spooky, which it should be! It's a ghost story! The voice actors in this are phenomenal, and the animation is also really beautiful. Overall, 4.5 stars.

An Album of Christmas Carols - 5
It's time. The one you've all been waiting for. Somehow universally seen as the best adaptation of Dickens' classic.
Tumblr media
"A Muppet Christmas Carol" (1992, Michael Caine)
This was the first full-length adaptation of A Christmas Carol that I recall ever watching, and has pretty much been my favourite to rewatch ever since. I was actually so used to this version that the first time I saw a different one I was confused why there weren't two Marleys.
We open with a sweep over London and an introduction to our narrator, Gonzo the Great Charles Dickens, and his friend Rizzo the Rat. From Brooklyn, NYC. The addition of the narrator is a clever touch (and, I suspect, the only way they could think to use Gonzo), and marks this adaptation as the most "book-accurate", according to the BBC (due to the large amount of text quoted directly from the novella).
Michael Caine really epitomises the role for me. Soft-spoken but hard. Trigger temper. Intimidating and heartless. After the opening song, early scenes with Nephew Fred, the charity men, Kermit Cratchit (and the other bookkeepers), he departs home and Cratchit sings a song that gets stuck in my head around this time every damn year.
Ghosts? Ghosts!
Tumblr media
Back home, the doorknocker very creatively morphs into (Jacob) Marley's face. I don't know how they did it. Maybe vacuumed it but reversed the footage. We only get a brief bit of the other 'tells' before Jacob (and Robert) Marley appear to heckle their old business partner. Their song is great, probably my favourite part of the film.
"Doomed, Scrooge! You're doomed for all time / Your future is a horror story written by your crimes / Your chains are forged by what you say and do / So have your fun, when life is done a nightmare waits for you!"
Tumblr media
Christmas Past looks to me like the thing that comes out of the Ark of the Covenant in Indiana Jones, right before it turns into the angel of death and kills all the Nazis. And because of that, I never feel very comfortable while it's on-screen. Weird childlike angel spirit whatsit.
(In the outtakes, Gonzo manages to get his grappling hook through his own head. The puppeteers play it off wonderfully).
The scenes in the school are hilarious to me, particularly Sam the Eagle's two major jokes:
"Work hard lad, and some day your life will be as solid as this very building!"
/Gonzo and Rizzo break the shelf in the background
"Hrm. I've been meaning to fix that shelf."
And of course:
"You'll love business. It's the American way!"
/Gonzo corrects Sam
"Ah. Hrm. It is the British way!"
Fozziwig's party is shown, where the filmmakers manage to fit in all the other Muppets they'd be hard-pressed to place, like Doctor Teeth's band and the Swedish Chef. Rizzo ends up on fire for the first, but not the last, time this film.
Now, depending on when you were introduced to this film you may or may not realise there's a big emotional award-bait song here after Belle breaks up with Scrooge. It was in the original cut, and the VHS edition, but got cut for broadcast. When DVDs were first printed, the master had been lost so you could only get the version without the song. Apparently it's now back on Disney+ as an extra.
The song isn't all that, to be honest, but without it the reprise later in the film doesn't hit quite right, so... Swings and roundabouts. Past departs, Scrooge is deposited back in bed, just in time for...
Tumblr media
... Okay, this might be controversial, but. Christmas Present is the weakest part of the film. The costume is impressive, and made specifically for this film (well, all three ghosts were), and the song is nice, but this version of the ghost just doesn't have the sarcastic bite that I enjoy so much. Even when he does deliver the ironic echo to Scrooge, it sounds out-of-place precisely because he's been nothing but 'nice' up until that point.
Anyway. We get Nephew Fred's party and the Cratchit's Christmas (the second time Rizzo ends up on fire), with the scene-stealing Miss Piggy giving it her all as Emily Cratchit. "It's a chef thing, dear" was a very common refrain around our house when we were eating something out-of-turn.
Tumblr media
As Present fades away, Scrooge is left with the tall, ominous Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come, who speaks entirely in deep bassoon audio cues. The tone of the film shifts considerably in this segment, so much so they even have Gonzo and Rizzo depart to make it more serious. Old Joe and the others who benefit from Scrooge's death are all creatively shown as vermin and carrion feeders - a spider, a moth, a crow and a bug*.
(*Well, she's described as a potato in Muppet's Treasure Island, but eh).
The Cratchit household sans Tim is a sad place and Scrooge can only bear so much of it before tearfully confronting his own mortality and begging repentance from the mute spirit.
Then, of course, it's Christmas Day! He hasn't missed it! Scrooge engages the services of the caroller seen previously to haul an absolutely massive turkey downtown. In a departure from the book, he stops only briefly at Fred's to deliver presents then goes directly to the Cratchit household, where Miss Piggy violently threatens him. Misunderstandings cleared up, Scrooge helpfully invites half of the entire city of London into this one-up, one-down Camden house and we close out on everyone singing a happy reprise of Belle's "you suck and I'm breaking up with you" song.
Highlights and Humbugs
Tumblr media
Despite anything I said above about the film's few flaws, they really are very few and far between. The serious, professional acting of Caine opposite the Muppets is the thing that sells the whole film, and I really wish they'd do more of this sort of classic literary adaptation.
It also holds a special place in the hearts of those who worked on the film - it was the first Muppets outing after Jim Henson, the creator of the original show, had died. The cast were unsure if they should or even could continue without him, though Jim's son, Brian Henson, was encouraged by co-creator Frank Oz to take up the puppets and the result was this masterpiece. Michael Caine has also spoken about this being one of his favourite roles, and how easy it was to forget that he was acting against puppets.
The songs are great. The jokes are funny. The effects hold up. The core of the story shines through. It's just a very good version overall.
10 out of 10 Humbugs. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

When It Started: Julian Casablancas
The Strokes lead singer was born on August 23, 1978 in New York City. His father John was the founder and owner of Elite Model Management, while his mother Jeanette worked as a Danish model and former Miss Denmark. At the age of eight, his parents would divorce. His mother would later marry painter Sam Adoquei, who heavily influenced the young Casablancas by introducing him to classic rock artists such as the Doors. Julian has several half brothers and half sisters through his father’s multiple marriages. The future frontman of the Strokes would attend a variety of schools throughout his early life, which led him to meet many of the future members of the band through schools such as Lycée Français de New York, the Institut Le Rosey boarding school in Switzerland, and the Dwight School in New York. At the latter, Julian would start to informally play music with Nick Valensi and Fab Moretti, which ultimately was the beginning of the Strokes. The singer would never finish high school, but did receive his GED in place of it. He would later attend music classes at Five Towns College, which became the very first time that Casablancas actually enjoyed going to school.
Throughout the history of the Strokes, Julian has served as the principal songwriter for the group. Some have said that he would insert a large measure of control over the music, but he and other members have said that does not seem to be the case anymore. Each member of the group brings their own ideas about future songs, then the band decides what to use and what to discard. Nick Valensi would say this about the singer. “His ear is so sharp. He's the one with the ear for detail in this band. Creatively, he is a force to be reckoned with." In 2009, Casablancas released his first solo album entitled Phrazes for the Young through RCA. He would talk about releasing music as a solo artist versus material from the Strokes. “It’s like touring with me or with five of me." The singer would also go on to say that as a solo artist he is able to experiment with his music and lyrics in ways that he would probably avoid in the Strokes. He has always been quite adamant the brand name that is the band should be protected. The title of the album had been inspired by the Oscar Wilde book, Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young, while the album itself embraced a very 1980’s new wave sound that had a heavy emphasis on the use of synthesizers. He talked about this new direction in his music. “I would've gone weirder with the music, but I wanted to be smart. I didn't want people to say, 'Okay, this is his weird abstract thing,' and dismiss the album. I worked too hard on it for that to happen... I wanted to be crazy original and bridge the gap between traditional music and modern music." The LP would be recorded in New York and Omaha, Nebraska with producer Jason Lader and some additional assistance from Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes. A tour would follow the release with a backing band called the Sick Six including Jeff Kite (keyboard), Nelson London (synthesizer), JP Bowersock (guitar), Danielle Haim (percussion) and Alex Carapetis (drums). The first major shows in North America took place over the course of a month at the Downtown Palace Theater in Los Angeles. This venue had been previously used in the Michael Jackson “Thriller” music video.
In 2013, Julian began another side project called Julian Casablancas + the Voidz. Other members of this new band included Jeramy "Beardo" Gritter and Amir Yaghmai on guitar, Jacob "Jake" Bercovici on bass (as well as synthesizer), Alex Carapetis on drums and percussion, and Jeff Kite on keyboard. In 2017, the group wanting more recognition as a band rather than a side project changed its name to simply the Voidz. The goal of the group was to create music that represented a quality of being both very aggressive and quite complex. As lead vocalist and songwriter, Casablancas began to explore musical scales within Middle Eastern music, not any traditional Western scales. Jake Bercovici has said, they are interested in “exploring [music] from the margins.” The singer looked upon the group as a vehicle in which he could create music that embodied characteristics much more experimental than anything that the Strokes ever offered. Their debut album Tyranny was released in September 2014 through Casablancas’s own record label, Cult Records. The album would also feature an 11 minute single entitled “Human Sadness,” which Julian actually wrote originally for a short documentary film about his stepfather, painter Sam Adoquei. Their second album would be released in March 2018 entitled Virtue, which took on a much stronger political point of view emphasizing the paradox between truth and lies.
Over the years, Julian has collaborated on a number of tracks with other artists. In 2006, the Strokes teamed up with Eddie Vedder and Josh Homme for a cover of “Mercy Mercy (The Ecology)” by Marvin Gaye. On the track, Vedder sang backup vocals, while Homme would play drums. In 2008, he recorded a collaboration with Pharrell and Santigold for Converse on a track called “My Drive-thru.” In 2009, the singer lent his vocals to the comedy trio the Lonely Island for a parody song on their debut album Incredibad called “Boom Box.” The Strokes frontman would later record a cover of another Saturday Night Live parody, “I Wish It Was Christmas Today.” He would eventually perform the song live with Jimmy Fallon, Horacio Sanz, and the Roots on Fallon’s talk show. In 2010, Casablancas sang vocals for the track “Little Girl” on the 2010 Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse album Dark Night of the Soul. In 2011, Julian performed the song “Rave On” for the release of a Buddy Holly tribute record. In 2013, he would also provide vocals, lyrics, and guitar to the Daft Punk song instant crush on their 2013 record Random Access Memories. The album would go on the win the Grammy for Album of the Year, which he would receive recognition for his work on it. In 2015, Julian created a cover with Jehnny Beth of the 1983 song Boy/Girl, which would be released through Cult Records. In 2016, he would also provide covers for the soundtrack to the HBO series Vinyl performing three tracks by the Velvet Underground, “Venus in Furs,” “Run Run Run,” and “White Light/White Heat.” That same year, the singer would pen a song for Har Mar Superstar on his album Best Summer Ever entitled “Youth Without Love.”
In 2009, Casablancas started his own music label, Cult Records. The company currently includes a roster of The Growlers, Har Mar Superstar, Songhoy Blues, Rey Pila, Karen O, Promiseland, The Strokes, The Voidz, Exhibition and Cerebral Ballzy. Past artists were Albert Hammond Jr., The Virgins, Reputante, INHEAVEN, Exclamation Pony and Nelson London (C O L O R). The company first began as an imprint in order to release his first solo album Phrazes for the Young. As for his influences, the earliest ones were the Doors and Velvet Underground. He would say this about the latter group. “The way Lou Reed wrote and sang about drugs and sex, about the people around him — it was so matter-of-fact. He could be romantic in the way he portrayed these crazy situations, but he was also intensely real. It was poetry and journalism." Other influences include Bob Marley, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. He would later say that the song “Yellow Ledbetter” inspired him to start making music. In his personal life, the singer would marry the Strokes assistant manager, Juliet Joslin in 2005. They have two sons together, but divorced in 2019. In the early days of the Strokes, Casablancas struggled with drinking, but he has been completely sober since 2009. Julian would say in an interview about trying to quit drinking, he was “hungover for five years.”

A Christmas Carol Aftermath: Fan
The young woman stood anxiously in some bright, indeterminate scene, waiting. She was lovely, but her form was delicate, even fragile — in life, she’d always been a frail creature. And yet, her face held in it a kind of strength, and she carried herself with a quiet sort of power, in marked contrast to her doll-like appearance. Her wide blue eyes held fire in their depths; yet her smile was gentle and kind.
A voice was heard from behind her. “Fan!”
She whirled about to see a young man, perhaps a few years older than her. His brown hair and hazel-green eyes stood in marked contrast to his pale, golden-haired sister: Ebenezer had inherited his mother’s dark hair and complexion, while Fan, born of their father’s second marriage, had her mother’s fair skin and bright blue eyes.
“Ebenezer!” She ran to him and threw her arms about him in an instant. “Dear, dear brother!” She showered his face with kisses, while he laughed and twirled his little sister around. “Oh, dear brother, I almost thought I’d lost you!”
“You almost did,” he told her, and then held out his hand, beckoning to the man beside him, who took it, smiling.
“Fan, I would like to introduce you to Jacob Marley. I was lost, but he found me.” Ebenezer then bit his lip, looking at Fan speculatively. “Fan, Jacob and I… we are… we are very close. You see—”
Fan cut him off, laughing merrily. “Oh, Ebenezer, I know all that!”
Ebenezer looked momentarily shocked, but recovered himself, and raised a wry eyebrow. “Would you care to explain? There seems to be a lot I don’t know around here.” His eyes shifted briefly in Jacob’s direction, a small smile on his lips. Jacob returned the smile with a wide grin.
Fan giggled. “Who do you think it was who appealed to the Spirits for Jacob?”
At Ebenezer’s look of surprise, Jacob chuckled. “Ebenezer, when I died, my soul was hardly in a state of grace. I knew that my pleas would not be heard, and so, I asked Fan to intercede, on your behalf.”
The three talked for a long, comfortable time — a time that might have been hours or years — revisiting old fond memories, telling of what had gone on in their time apart, laughing, even singing once or twice, Jacob’s rich baritone mingling with Fan’s sweet pure voice, and Ebenezer (who had never been able to carry a tune) humming along and now and again offering a few off-key notes. But Ebenezer noticed that the other two seemed to share some slight, mysterious sense of unease amidst the joy and companionship.
Fan was retelling how she’d convinced their father to bring Ebenezer home from school. “At first, he dismissed the idea, but you know me, Eb, I’m persistent.” She winked.
Ebenezer laughed. “Yes,” he agreed, “And frankly a bit frightening if one gets between you and whatever you’ve set your mind on.”
He was surprised when Jacob nodded in agreement. “I’d say more than a ‘bit.’ I was rather terrified of you — and I was not an easy man to shake back in the day,” he added with a chuckle. A moment later, the mirth vanished from his face, and his eyes went wide and darted to Ebenezer. Fan’s face mirrored his alarm.
“…What?” Ebenezer looked between the two of them. “Did… did you two know one another when we were alive?” He frowned, a sense of disquiet settling into him. He turned to Jacob, almost harshly. “Why did you never tell me you knew my sister?”
A shadow of the sorrow and shame he’d seen on the ghostly old Marley’s face that fateful night reappeared for a moment as Jacob cast his eyes downward. Then he seemed to gather himself, and when he looked up, his eyes were calm. “Fan, it’s time.”
“Time?” Ebenezer barked — he’d always been a bit hotheaded, and his confusion manifested as anger. “Time for what?”
Jacob sighed, and the sigh spoke of deep pain and regret. He met Ebenezer’s eyes, but it seemed difficult for him. He spoke as a man on trial speaks. “Ebenezer… when I was a young man, before we met, I turned a young couple out of their home. The woman was with child, soon to give birth. The man was a labourer who had lost his employment, and they couldn’t pay their rent. It was… it was very cold outside.”
Fan listened quietly, watching her brother closely. Ebenezer’s brow furrowed, a horrible suspicion growing in his mind.
Jacob went on quietly, steadily. “The woman…” he glanced at Fan with a small smile. “I’d never met anyone like her. She stood up to me. I held her life, her child’s life, in my hands, yet she spoke like she was the one in control. Her voice was steady, her eyes were fierce, and yes, I was afraid of her, though I didn’t show it at the time.” He sighed. “It didn’t help, of course. Nothing, not even this wholly remarkable woman, would turn me from my course. She later died on the streets, in the winter chill and the effort of labour. The child did survive, as you well know, but Fan…” his voice broke. “I was responsible for her death, Ebenezer. Or at the very least, I contributed to it.” He paused. “I never knew, when we were alive. I swear it. I knew about your sister, but I had no idea this was the same woman I had been so heartless towards. You never mentioned the husband — I did not know her name, only his. I barely even paid attention to them at the time.” He was crying, now. “I condemned them to a life on the streets, condemned Fan to death, without even bothering to know her name, to—”
Ebenezer could bear no more. He stood up without a word and hastened away.
Fan found him, later. He’d been crying, and his eyes were red from tears, but his face was hard and angry. “Why didn’t he tell me? That’s what hurts most, that he knew how I’d loved you, how a part of me, the best part of me, died when you did, and that he killed you. Didn’t he think that worth mentioning?” Fan started to protest, but he spoke over her. “I don’t mean when we were alive, I believe he truly didn’t know then, but after he died… once he knew… and we were together, and he said nothing!” That last word came out in a cry of fury. “He let me fall in love with him, knowing what he knew, and he didn’t… didn’t…” He couldn’t continue. The pain and the rage choked off his words.
“He wanted to tell you,” Fan said gently.
“How could you know that?” Ebenezer shook his head angrily, tears once more threatening to fall.
“Because I asked him not to, Eb.” He looked up in surprise. “He begged me to let him tell you, but I wanted to wait until we were all together. When the time was right.”
He, still smarting and angry, said nothing.
“Eb…” she hesitated. “I’d given up on you.” She looked at his shocked face. “I thought I’d never see my brother again; that in a way, the man I’d known was already dead.” He stared at her. “I did try. I tried to reach you for, oh! so long, but I… I thought you were lost.” She smiled sadly.
“But Jacob never thought that for an instant. He fought for you. He pleaded for my help, and… I almost didn’t give it. I thought I could not bear the hope that you might come back to me, that it would be too painful when you failed. But… well, he can be persistent too, it turns out.” She offered a small half-smile. “Especially where you’re involved.
“He always knew you would come back to the Light. His Faith was utter and absolute; not in the Spirits, but in you.” She took Ebenezer’s hand softly. “I will always be grateful to Jacob Marley, for giving me my brother back.”
He looked into her eyes, saw what she said was true, and cried. And she, small and delicate though she was, held him and supported him while the tears washed away the bitterness and resentment in his heart. After a long while, he wiped his eyes and spoke. “Thank you, Fan.”
“Of course.” She gave him a quick, tight embrace. “Now, don’t you think you should go find your husband and talk with him about this?”
“Husb—!” Ebenezer fairly choked. He found, after the initial shock, that he liked the word. He liked it very much, in fact. Fan shooed him off, looking very pleased with the reaction she’d gotten.
Ebenezer found Jacob with his head in his hands, his shoulders slumped miserably. He cleared his throat, and Jacob looked up anxiously. Husband, Eb thought. Aloud, he said, “Jacob. I… I spoke with Fan. She told me what you did.” When Jacob gave a stifled sob, Ebenezer hurriedly clarified: “For me. What you did for me.” He took a cautious step forward. “I… I don’t know if I can fully forgive you right away. What I do know is that there is no version of the Future I can see without you by my side, for… well, for always.” Jacob’s clear blue eyes had a hint of hope in them now. “I love you.” He took Jacob’s hand gently in his own. “Will that do for now?”
Relief flooded Jacob’s face. “Yes,” he said, his voice catching slightly. “That will do.”

DISCLAIMER: A Christmas Carol is a public domain work. However, these vignettes were also inspired by several other works. While the first installment in this series was mostly influenced by “A Conspiracy of Spirits: The Love Story of Jacob Marley and Ebenezer Scrooge” in The Solstice Tales by @wolfenm, this one was heavily influenced by Jacob T. Marley by R. William Bennet. Other inspirations include the play Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol by Tom Mula. This particular segment was also partially inspired by the lovely short story "Scrooge and Marley" by aptasi on FF.net. Enjoy:
{With the PMH (Past Miraculous Holder} They were all sitting in the movie theater, eating popcorn, and watching the events unfold themselves.
“Our little bug needs some guidance, you guys thinking what I am thinking.” The first-ever ladybug spoke up (Mei).
“We should give her a surprise, after school”
Everyone agreed and started planning out their idea. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// (With Mari) Yesterday was pretty embarrassing, especially since the assassins escaped. Oh well, I don’t want to relive that again.
(Mari it is Mei, after school today, go to the alleyway near _______ street. We have a surprise for you. Make sure to bring Kaalki with you. And just know, we are looking after you.)
(Thank you, Mei, I am happy to hear from you again, say hi to the others for me, will you?).
She happily agreed.
In under 10 minutes, I got ready to go to school, I grabbed my purse along with Tikki and Kaalki, and headed out.
Gotham Academy
Very different than I had pictured it, but it will do.
Being the new student sucks sometimes but it is what it is.
My mission is to avoid Damien at all costs. But apparently luck isn’t on my side, because he is on the other side of the school steps,
Great way of keeping a low profile, Mari. I scolded myself
Just ignore the pretty boy… Just ignore the pretty, wait what? Stop it, Mari, you promised yourself you wouldn’t go down this path again…
Just ignore your childhood crush,
Shi- No cussing, a tinny voice said in the back of my head. Shoot he’s looking at me better RUN!!!
(Damian’s pov) Yesterday was pretty embarrassing, and not to mention the bloody assassins dared to escape. All because of my insolent brothers.
Alfred dropped me off at Gotham Academy. I honestly don’t understand why my father forces me to even go to this school. I am clearly more intelligent than these empty-headed people. But apparently, I have to “socialize” with kids my age. No thank you I am fine with just one friend.
Where did that come from?
I was about to go inside when I noticed someone on the other side of the school steps.
It seemed the new student was having a fight with herself, she then ran up the steps and trip but got back up and headed to the office.
What an idiot.
Whispers were going around the school, so were rumors and questions about the new student. Why would a new student be joining in the middle of the trimester, and especially in the city with the worst crime in the world?
Suspicious…
I headed to my first class, Physics
I sat at the back of the classroom next to Jon because he is the most tolerable in the whole school.
“Good morning class today we have a new student, please introduce yourself, Miss.”
The same girl from earlier stood up to speak,” Hi my name is Marinette Dupain-Cheng and I originally lived in Paris.” This raises my suspensions even more, why would someone who lives in a safe city be somewhere like Gotham. People are Weird.
(Mari's POV)
“Thank you Marinette, you sit next to Marely, please raise your hand.” A black-haired, brown-eyed, Hispanic-looking girl raised her hand. While I was walking to my seat, 2 things stood out to me. I was sitting behind the one person I didn’t want to sit near.
Damian Freaking Wayne/Robin. And he was glaring at me, great, the famous bat glare.
I just sighed.
Great trying to stay away from Damian is harder than I thought,
Mei and the rest had something to do with this.
(Mei and the rest of the crew) They were snickering at the screen that showed their beloved little bug and her fate. Marinette was correct; they were a part of it, especially if they were planning her love life all while eating popcorn. This was going to be Fun.
(Time skip, Mari's Pov)
It was lunchtime already and so far I was done with my first 3 classes. I had Marely in all of my classes so she showed me around the school. She easily became one of my new best friends. Luckily for me, Damien was only in my first class.
Lunch came and went by, I punched a kid in the face cause he went too far in his opinion on me, then we got sent to the principal's office only for him to place us in detention for the next day. And then it was time for the last class of the day...
Gym.
Oh how I was excited to participate in this class {who hates the gym, cause I do?}
The Gym teacher announced that they would be competing against the art teacher's class since the teacher was absent for the day.
Low and behold…
{You guys probably think It is Damian, am I right?}...
It was that jerk face that I met earlier, the one I punched in the face, for calling me pathetic and a liar. Can't I have no enough enemies in my life? Jack, Jacob, Jim whatever his name is,
he is going DOWN!!!
Too bad he got on my bad side, you never want to see a pissed off, Mari.
Also, too bad for him, dodgeball is my favorite game, and I happen to be the best at it.
Well back when I was alive in my Paris.
And I happen to be the hero Ladybug. And I carry the Kwami's Of Creation and Teleportation right now, and not to mention the others especially Plagg./p>
Calm down Mari, it is okay you have another chance, you can sorta of start over again. I told myself.
Right now you have to show jerk face exactly who he messed with.
(Another time skip cause ya author too lazy 🤪)
Let's just say he will never mess with me, again. And for that matter, if these Gotham kids are who I think are, word spreads fast, and they would know not to mess with me.
As I was heading to the direction Mei talked to me again.
(Bring Marely with you, she will play a big roll in the future. Oh and she needs to know the truth after your surprise)
(Are you sure, that could be dangerous and risky?)
(Trust me you will need all the help you can get, just don't worry about it right now, you know what Bunnixx would say!!)
(Yeah, yeah I know, everything has a time and place.)
(Marley's pov)
I was about to leave the building when Marinette or as she told me to call her Mari, called out to me. I turned around and saw her running towards me.
She tripped but caught herself gracefully, I giggled.
" Do you need anything Mari?"
"I was wondering if you would like to hang out right now?"
My common sense screamed at me not to go because, 1.We are in Gotham for crying out loud. 2.She could be a villain in disguise And 3. I just met her.
But alas my gut is telling me to go, and I trust my gut, especially since it got me out of sticky situations.
So I went with her.
(Damian's POV) All-day people were pestering me with rumors about the new student. Especially after school, apparently, she beat up a kid and beat him at Dodgeball.
I spotted her talking to the girl she sat next to during Physics.
They left the building, and then I did what any reasonable person would do.
I dragged Jon with me and we followed them.
This is Gotham after all. And I am the son of the World's greatest detective.
(Mari's POV)
Someone was following me, I bet I know who.
It won't be of any use losing them now.
I’m just going to let them be surprised. Oh the CHAOS!!!
When we arrived at the place Mei informed me, Marely was confused.
"Just wait for it." Not even 5 seconds later a portal opened up behind us and covered our mouths, I wonder if this is the surprise that Mei had for me.
Then they yanked us into the portal and it closed.
I looked into a familiar room that I thought I would never see again I turned around and I saw…
And older looking Adrien and Kagami than me, precisely 3 years.
I was wrapped in a hug. I didn't even know that we were crying, once that was over I looked up to see Marely super confused and shocked.
I mean who wouldn't be both when you were kidnapped, then your recently new friend hugs your kidnappers and they all cry, and you don't even know what is going on.
"Umm, Marely meet my best friends Adrien and Kagami, from another alternate universe."
"Hi, I am Adrien" The sunshine boy is back.
"Greetings, nice to meet the friend of my best friend."
"Hi, I am Marely, can you tell me what the heck is going on???"
"Well, you see Marely…"
(With Damian)
Wtf just happened?!?!?!?

Gatiss to play ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge’s business partner, Jacob Marley, in his version of Charles Dickens novella
Mark Gatiss to star in own stage adaptation of A Christmas Carol
Chris Wiegand
Mon 3 Feb 2020 18.00 GMT
Tumblr media
He has long written Christmas ghost stories for television and now Mark Gatiss is to adapt one of the most celebrated of them all for the stage. Gatiss will star as the ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge’s business partner, Jacob Marley, in his own version of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. The play is to open at Nottingham Playhouse in October and then Alexandra Palace in London at the end of the year.
Gatiss said that Dickens’s novella, which was first published in 1843, “has been absolutely my favourite story since I was, well, tiny. It’s an astonishingly powerful tale of life, love, loss and redemption and remains supremely relevant. But at its heart it is a ghost story and that will be at the core of my new version. A scary, thrilling, joyous adventure to get the blood piping on a freezing winter’s night. A Victorian phantasmagoria!”
A Christmas Carol was adapted for BBC One last year, with Guy Pearce in the lead role, and remains a perennially popular festive production in theatres, too. Jack Thorne’s version has returned to the Old Vic for two consecutive years since its premiere in 2017 and also had a run on Broadway. Piers Torday’s radical reworking, Christmas Carol – A Fairy Tale, which focuses on Ebenezer Scrooge’s sister, Fan, was staged at Wilton’s Music Hall in London last year, while Tony Cownie’s An Edinburgh Christmas Carol, staged at the Royal Lyceum, brought the story back to the city where Dickens was believed to have first stumbled across a memorial to Ebenezer Scroggie, providing inspiration for his tale.
Gatiss’s version will be directed by Adam Penford, Nottingham Playhouse’s artistic director, who collaborated with him in 2018 on The Madness of George III. The new show was announced on Monday, along with other Nottingham Playhouse productions including Choir Boy, written by the Oscar-winning Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight), which will open in 2021.
Opening alongside A Christmas Carol this October at the Playhouse will be a new drama about the Labour MP Ellen Wilkinson, who led the Jarrow march and introduced free milk in schools as education secretary. Red Ellen was written by Caroline Bird and will be directed by Wils Wilson.

we’re going to be friends → a self para
Who: Topher Hummel and with special guest appearances from some NPCs
Where: Multiple locations in Lima, Ohio or surrounding areas
When: This is over the course of a couple years. So. many. timeskips.
What: Just a bunch of friendship fluff with sprinkles of angst ‘cause why the hell not?
Warnings: Trigger warning for internalized homophobia, general warning for Topher rambling his ass off.
Junior Year at William McKinley - December
“Sup fuckers?” Topher called out in greeting as he entered the dressing room area through the door that opened into the student parking lot. “You’re late!” one of his drama club friends - Allison - responded as she carried props over to a table near the stage so they would be ready to go. “What the audience and Ms. Johnson don’t know won’t hurt ‘em,” he fired back with a laugh as he ducked into the boys’ dressing room to get changed. His costume rested on the nearest rack with ‘Topher Hummel - Fred’ written in Ms. Johnson’s neat handwriting. In a matter of minutes, he changed and reemerged in the main area, only to see the drama teacher herself walk in with someone he’d only seen a handful of times and only rarely interacted with, yet apparently never learned the name of. She cleared her throat to grab everyone’s attention and in a matter of moments, all eyes were on her. Well, her and the guy she’d brought along.
“For those who don’t know him, this is Shane. He’s going to help out with stage makeup tonight and tomorrow because I know there are plenty of first-timers among us who might be a little confused,” she introduced him as a couple of cheers rose up. Probably from relieved crew members or people who knew Shane way better than Topher did. “Okay, female first-timers to stage makeup go with Allison. Male first-timers go with Shane.” Just like that, she disappeared to go attend to some more last-minute business and chaos descended again as people started to file into the dressing rooms once more.
It took a few minutes before Topher got to the front of the line, but once he did, recognition seemed to flicker on Shane’s face. “Holy shit,” he laughed as Topher settled in one of the chairs that had been pulled up to the mirrors. “Topher, right?” “That’s me. And you must be Shane. Nice to finally put a name to the face.” When a quizzical look appeared on the other’s face, it served as his cue to explain, “I’ve seen you with some of my friends at games and pep rallies over the years. Plus, Ms. Johnson literally just introduced you.“ Shane fondly rolled his eyes at the smartassery as he removed a clean brush from his bag of supplies then remarked, “Well, it’s nice that I’m the one who gets to put makeup all over the star soccer player’s face.” That got a chuckle out of Topher and in turn, Shane couldn’t help but chuckle along at his own (admittedly lame) quip. They shared a few more moments of banter as the latter worked his magic and told him what he was doing as well as what to use, just in case Topher returned to the drama club for another production.
Eventually, Topher had to leave so the sophomore playing Jacob Marley could be shown the ropes. But by then, they’d already exchanged phone numbers. Or to be more accurate used a Sharpie to write their respective numbers on the other’s arm. Thankfully, the Victorian-style clothing that Topher wore as his costume covered Shane’s number so it wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb. What mattered most is that he knew it was there, that he had someone else in his life who was just a phone call or text away. A new potential friend.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Summer between Junior and Senior Year - June
He glanced up from his phone just in time to see Maia’s car pull up outside of Hummel Tires and Lube. Topher gave a slight wave to show that he saw her before he went to go find Burt. “Hey dad, I’m going to Columbus. Maia and company just pulled up.”
“Alright, call me when you get there and when you’re on your way back,” the elder Hummel replied before he pulled his youngest in for a hug. “Say hi to Maia and your friends for me.” “Will do,” Topher promised before he jogged outside to hop in the car. “Hey there beautiful,” he greeted Maia with a kiss as he set his backpack between his legs and tried to ignore the sour taste that lingered in his mouth, a reminder that he should have felt something, but didn’t.
“Hey babe,” Maia answered with a soft smile just before someone’s rolled up straw wrapper got tossed at the back of her head from the backseat. She and Topher both turned to look at Allison and Shane, who had ducked down just in time to pretend like they were immersed in their phones all along. “Which one of you threw that?” Just like that, the two pointed at each other. “I forgot that when they’re in the car, there’s a no kissing my boyfriend policy,” she chuckled.
“You’re making us singles feel like shit,” Allison fired back with a laugh, clearly just wanting to joke around. Laughter and equally light-hearted apologies filled the car as Maia got them on the road that would take them towards Columbus. “Okay, so you three have been holding out on me all week with where the everloving fuck we’re going,” Topher started. “Columbus,” the trio answered at the same time which made him shake his head in mock exasperation. If there was anything that all of his friends had in common no matter what, it was a smartass sense of humor. Just another bond that held them together like drama united himself and Allison or dance brought him and Maia together. Hell, he’d known of Shane, but officially met him through drama. “Look around, see if you can find any context clues,” the aforementioned male piped up.
So Topher glanced over at Maia to notice that she was wearing a tie-dyed dress colored with blue, purple, and pink. Allison’s shirt said something about how she didn’t come out of the closet, she came out of the cabinets like all of the other pans. Then Shane was wearing a simple white tank top that featured a rainbow in the center and that same rainbow was painted on both of his cheeks. (”A toned down look for a make up artist,” he’d say later. “But a look all the same.”) “Wow, I don’t know guys,” Topher joked even though he’d figured it out after he read Allison’s shirt a couple of times and was now just trying to swallow his panic. “Seems like we’re going to the pride thing in Columbus.”
Cheers rose up and he fondly shook his head at the trio. “He finally figured it out!” Shane proclaimed. “But we can always do something else, okay?” Maia offered. “Hell no. I’m going to be the most badass ally and there’s no place I’d rather be,” Topher promised. He could do that, be supportive of his girlfriend and friends. But all the same, the younger Hummel got wrapped up in his own train of thought during the rest of the ride. Even when someone put on a playlist full of songs to get the quartet pumped up for pride, even as he sang along, Topher’s mind always returned to the same old reminders. You’re not gay and even if you were, you can’t be. You’re supposed to marry Maia or some other equally great girl. Sure, the evidence is fucking overwhelming, but dude, you. are. not. really. gay.
Eventually - thankfully - they arrived in Columbus and by some miracle, managed to find a great parking spot. “Okay, so Toph, I’m going to steal your girlfriend,” Allison started as the group slipped out of Maia’s car. “We’re going to look around for cool stuff on one side then you and Shane can tackle the other side? We can sound off in the group chat if we see something awesome.” Topher nodded slightly as he answered, “That’s cool. Just let us get a goodbye kiss in real quick.” They kissed and the sour taste reentered when there was no spark of love, passion, or anything. “See you, boys, later,” Maia called over her shoulder before she departed with Allison. And with that, Shane and Topher were left to their own devices.
As they wandered around after Topher called Burt to tell him about the group’s safe arrival, some idle chit-chat was made between them, but the duo remained silent for the most part. Until Shane decided to break the silence as a concerned look appeared on his face. “Hey, Topher, you okay?” he questioned. “Yeah, I’m fine. Why?” Topher responded while he tried to not look like a deer caught in the headlights. He could only hope that he hadn’t had a wistful look on his face or that he hadn’t given himself away in some other fashion. Hell, he hoped that Shane couldn’t see anything that reminded him of himself back when he was in the closet.
Shane replied, “It’s just you’re normally way more chatty. Always talking our ears off about a new story or script idea or some shit and you’ve been quiet since we left Lima.” Topher waved him off as he tried to not look relieved that the other male still seemed clueless to the younger Hummel’s mental turmoil. “I’m alright, I promise. Just stayed up too late last night.” That wasn’t a complete lie nor was it the whole truth. Ever since he’d realized he wasn’t straight and all of this internalized homophobia bullshit started, Topher had become a master at telling half-truths.
What he hadn’t told Shane was why he stayed up too late last night. During the day, it was easy to keep everything at bay by keeping himself busy. But the night was a whole different story. Unless he had something, anything else to focus on other than his own thoughts then Topher was usually treated to the same mental invasion that he’d experienced during the ride here. He mustered up his most confident look as he looked back at Shane then aimed to pull him in for a side hug. “You guys would be the first to know what the fuck is up with me, I promise.”
“Good, I’m holding you to that on behalf of everyone. Now, I smell something fucking delicious and it’s barbecue. Text the girls, tell them what we found,” Shane responded as his own arm wrapped around Topher. As Topher pulled his phone out to do just that, he found himself torn between what he should feel. Guilt at the fact that he’d just lied to one of his best friends or relief that his secret was safe for another day?
That same question was one he would go on to ask himself many more times down the road. But thankfully, more often than not, Topher found a distraction pretty quickly. And this time? It was enjoying delicious barbecue with the trio of his closest friends. Everything else could simply be worried about later.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Senior Year at William McKinley - October
“C’mon Topher,” all three of his friends pouted as they followed him out of the building and towards the soccer field. While they made their way out, they passed by plenty of posters that advertised tryouts for the Lima Theatre Guild’s winter play. Dog Sees God: Confessions of Teenage Blockhead, also known as the very same play that they were trying to convince him to audition for.
(Apparently Ms. Johnson had tried to petition the school board to let the drama club perform it and the whole thing fell on deaf ears, despite her best efforts to prove the pros would far outweigh the cons. So, she took her case to the local theatre guild and rumor had it they were eating out of her hand by the time the meeting was over. Just further proof to the drama kids that their faculty advisor slash teacher was an utter badass.)
“Guys, I told you that drama was gonna be a two-time thing. Christmas Carol and Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Topher gently reminded the trio as he turned around to walk backward so he could talk to them. Benefits of knowing the way to the soccer field like the back of his hand. Of course, the only thing they did was glance between each other in unspoken communication. Clearly they were trying to figure out who had the best shot at getting through to him.
Allison soon started, “You heard Ms. Johnson after the winter and spring plays, Toph.” He had in fact heard what she’d said when she was talking to his dad. “Your son, he just comes alive when he’s on stage. And then he breathes new life into the character in a way that’s just incredible,” Topher recited. “Exactly. You know what you’re doing. Plus, I’ll admit that I’m being a bit selfish when I say that I want someone to keep me from losing my sanity thanks to boredom.”
That made Topher snort in amusement while Maia picked up where Allison left off. “It does look great on a college application. I know that you’re practically guaranteed a soccer scholarship, but it never hurt to show off that you’re well-rounded.” Another valid point. After all, Topher had been rambling his head off earlier in the day about college applications. His attention then turned to Shane as he questioned, “Alright, what’ve you got?”
“It’s senior year, man,” Shane replied. “Plus, I’ve already read over the script and I think you’d be a shoo-in for Beethoven.” They’d arrived at the soccer field at this point, but practice didn’t start for another few minutes. “You’ve got the tortured artist vibe down pat,” he continued which made Topher nearly fall down laughing. “I’m gonna audition too. Been awhile since the last time I was on stage. Now, don’t get me wrong. I fucking love doing the make up, but it’s just been too long. I got to get back out there.”
All of that did make a return to the drama club sound very tempting, enough so that it made Topher visibly deflate. “Alright, looks like I’m auditioning for Dog Sees God,” he stated and as soon as the words left his mouth, the trio pulled him in for a group hug.
The next day saw the two of them remain true to their respective words when they auditioned. And when they got reprimanded for cheering in the library after Ms. Johnson gave them the good news the day after? That was totally worth it.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Senior Year at William McKinley - December
Even though Topher was far from an expert in parties, he had enough experience to know that there were no parties like drama club parties. Especially when it was two events combined into one. A late celebration of his 18th birthday, plus the cast and crew wanted to pat themselves on the back for jobs well done with their weekend performances. From what he saw, there hadn’t been a dry eye in the house and Topher couldn’t have been prouder of all the hard work they’d all put in.
So, they’d naturally piled into the living room of Allison’s house for the party after the Saturday show and they’d been properly showered with praises from loved ones. Topher had installed himself on the couch, sandwiched in between some of his other friends as they tried to take each other down in Mario Kart. Just as the race started to wind down, Maia called, “Topher, cake’s ready!” “Be right there!”
He lost the race, but the grin never faded from Topher’s face as he walked into the dining room then took a seat at the head of the table. As he pulled himself closer, his friends started to sing Happy Birthday while Maia carefully carried the cake in from the kitchen with Shane at her side, empty plates stacked up and at the ready. There was a piano along with music notes on the cake - a tribute to the character he’d brought to life in the play - and eighteen lit candles stuck in the upper right corner.
The song ended which served as Topher’s cue to blow out the candles. “Our boy’s another year older! Or he has been for a few days, but now it’s official!” Shane proclaimed before he pressed a kiss to his best friend’s cheek. Everyone clambered around in bids to get one of the first slices while Topher couldn’t help but reflect on how his cheeks no longer burned whenever he and Shane were in close quarters together.
It had started during the rehearsals because they were playing love interests, so naturally that called for plenty of close quarters moments. But apparently the universe really wanted to put him through the ringer. There had been no shortage of days where they were the only two members of their friend group who were available to hang out.
There had also been no shortage of days where Shane decided to recruit Topher to be his canvas for one reason or another. This in turn translated into plenty of time where only inches separated them. Which also meant plenty of time where Topher hoped his rapid heartbeat couldn’t be heard and when he lied about why he was so pink - sometimes red - in the face as his partner in crime worked his make up artist magic.
However, as time passed, Topher slowly got used to Shane invading his personal space on the regular. When his heart stopped racing at the mere thought of being close to him, that was when he knew the crush had fizzled out. Things had gone back to normal just like that. Sure, it had taken a couple of months, but there had been no need to worry after all. He didn’t have to dread the idea of telling him and no reason to tip the dominos.
Everything would be just fine, Topher reassured himself as he dug into the slice of cake that Maia had plated for him. He’d eventually have to revisit all of this, he knew that much. But for now, he was going to celebrate with his friends and just be a teenager. Everything else that demanded his attention - from his sexuality to reminders about studying for finals and preparing for college - could wait until tomorrow or even later. The present - where all of his friends were - was so much more important right now.
The party ended a few hours later and left the quartet to clean up followed by the construction of a blanket fort. (Sure, the couch was cozy enough for their movie marathon, but was it really the comfiest place to sleep?) So they naturally bundled up in blankets as the first Harry Potter movie started playing. With all of the warmth, it was only a matter of time before someone fell asleep and Topher had a pretty good feeling he’d be the first one. In true introvert fashion, the party had worn him out, except it was in the pleasant ‘I had a great time’ and deep in your bones way. His trio of friends had really outdone themselves, so he figured that his presents for the upcoming holidays should reflect how much he appreciated it.
But that would just have to be added to his agenda for tomorrow because all of the blankets and warmth from his friends were doing nothing to help him stay awake. “Night guys,” Topher whispered. “Goodnight birthday boy,” the three of them chorused. A tired laugh escaped as he shook his head then proceeded to fall asleep, surrounded by his three closest friends.

his past Sunday, Supreme shared a very special video with its 12.9 million IG followers. The clip features Buju Banton toasting over King Tubby’s dub version of the classic “Love I Can Feel” riddim. Capturing a spontaneous moment of celebration, the video was shot just after the legendary reggae artist wrapped up a Supreme photo shoot at his Gargamel Music headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica. The voice you hear in the background throwing out ad-libs—“Oh Gosh!” … “Really & truly!”—is my own. Something magical happened in that moment, as it often does on this magical island. Right place, right people, right time.
I’ve known Buju since 1993, before he started letting his dreadlocks grow. At the time I was a senior editor at a new magazine called VIBE and Buju was the biggest dancehall artist on the planet. Fresh off the success of his classic album Mr. Mention, Buju had so many #1 tunes in Jamaica that people were comparing him to Bob Marley. Descended from Jamaica’s Maroon freedom fighters, the youth born Mark Myrie was the youngest of 15 children raised in a humble abode on Salt Lane, a desolate stretch of road in the slums of western Kingston. As a teenager he began deejaying (Jamaican slang for rapping) on local sound systems, using the microphone to transform his life, speak truth to power, and give voice to the voiceless.
When we first met he’d recently signed a deal with a major American label that would result in two more landmark albums: Voice of Jamaica and Til Shiloh. I will never forget hearing Til Shiloh for the first time inside my office at VIBE. Buju brought a cassette and we closed the door and turned up the sounds. “I’m living while I’m living to the Father I will pray,” he sang on “Untold Stories,” one of the album’s most haunting tracks. “Only H.I.M. know how we get through every day…”
Oddly enough, there was no elaborate plan to make this historic collab happen. It started as a casual conversation with an old friend from VIBE days who recently joined the Supreme team. “Are you going to the Buju show?” I texted him, referring to Buju’s triumphant homecoming concert at Jamaica’s National Stadium.
Performing before a crowd of more than 30,000, Buju became the first artist to headline that prestigious arena since—you guessed it—Bob Marley. The emotionally charged stage show kicked off Buju’s ongoing Long Walk to Freedom Tour (named after Nelson Mandela’s autobiography), a well-deserved victory lap following nearly a decade behind bars. The artist had been set up by a paid government informant and convicted on questionable charges following not one but two problematic trials. Refusing a plea deal on principle, Mark Myrie did his time and finally returned home last December.

After spending time reconnecting with his family, he released his first recordings—the blazing sociopolitical critique “Country For Sale” as well as “Holy Mountain” and “Holy Ground,” which open and close DJ Khaled’s Father of Asahd album—leaving no doubt that Buju’s lyrical sword is sharper than ever. Aside from a brief statement to Boomshots, the media platform I founded in the 2000s, Buju has not given any interviews. Rest assured that the Banton has nuff things to talk about when he is good and ready. In a way, this collab is part of that conversation.
The Supreme squad didn’t make it to that first show, but a seed was planted. Boomshots was soon setting up conference calls with Buju’s management team and the iconic skate brand’s creative director. Before we knew it the date was set. I flew down with Reshma B a reggae journalist and filmmaker who’s been a key Boomshots contributor, to meet up with Supreme’s production crew for the shoot. Reshma wrote the first major piece about Buju’s homecoming for Billboard and she’s had a great vibe with him since they met. Our main priority was to make sure Buju felt comfortable and that everything flowed smoothly. It was good to see Buju’s father at Gargamel HQ that day, as well as Buju’s sons Markeem (who helps with his dad’s social media), and Jahazeil (who’s following his father’s footsteps into the music business). They seemed more excited than anybody over what was about to happen.
Supreme couldn’t have asked for a greater Photo Tee to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Buju joins an eclectic pop culture pantheon that includes Raekwon, Kate Moss, and Kermit the Frog. Judging by the initial IG comments, public reaction has been divided between ecstatic jubilation and too-cool-for-school remarks like “What do these hypebeasts know about Buju?” My hope is that the collaboration will introduce a world-renowned, GRAMMY-winning artist’s music and message to a new generation.
Of course, this whole thing is about so much more than a T-shirt. “Forward Ever,” Buju wrote on one of the box logo tees with a Sharpie. “Stand Firm.” I was happy to see this handwritten inscription included on the final shirt design. Name-checking classic songs by Jacob Miller and Peter Tosh, Buju made clear that he is determined to use every available platform to advance his lifelong mission of upliftment. The Long Walk to Freedom continues.

Alistair Sim: the “full-bodied” Scrooge
“An ant is what it is, and a grasshopper is what it is, and Christmas is a humbug.” —E. Scrooge
As so often happens when I choose a movie to write about, a movie I dearly love, I pass through a period of thinking there’s not really that much to say about it. That’s especially true with a story so often adapted and so universally beloved.
But of course as soon as I begin digging into the movie, its source material, and taking screen shots from the movie—can’t tell you how much I learn about a film during this stage—it invariably turns out there’s way too much to say and way too little time. I’m past my deadline already. That’s why this piece only goes through Scrooge’s first outing, with the Spirit of Christmas Past—I could happily spend another four hours doing screen shots, but this will hopefully whet your appetite for the greatness of this movie, if you don’t already know it, and get you ready for a re-viewing if you do.
So this will be not a finished essay but notes on an absolutely fabulous version of one of the most adapted stories in the English language. Also on my Christmas Carol watchlist: the George C. Scott version, which is regarded almost as highly as this 1951 version, and The Muppets’ Christmas Carol, which I have not yet seen. I’m taking for granted that you know the basic story and character names, at least the major ones (Scrooge, Marley, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim).
Christmastime looms large in Scrooge’s life. He was forged in the loneliness of his childhood at school, where he was left to fend for himself during the holidays. It was Christmas when his beloved sister, Fanny, rescued him from family exile and took him home, as she says in the movie, never to be lonely as long as she lives. It is Christmas Eve when Scrooge’s business partner and only friend Jacob Marley dies, and it is Christmas Eve seven years after that night when Dickens’ story takes place.
After a typical Christmas Eve, which for Mr. Scrooge means declining to make any donation to buy meat and drink for the poor (“I wish to be left alone,” he tells them) as well as telling a borrower who can’t make his payment to hie himself to debtor’s prison. “If they would rather die [than go to debtors’ prison], they’d better do it and decrease the surplus population,” and what seems to be a ritual of sneering at his clerk, Bob Cratchit, for his excitement about celebrating Christmas with his family, Scrooge has his customary solitary dinner. He shoos some tattered children carolers, singing in the snow, and walks to his house, the one he inherited from his late partner and friend, Jacob Marley. In the novella, Dickens says it is pitch dark, but that Scrooge knows every stone. But he is confronted by something he cannot account for: Marley’s face, lit by a dreadful light, appears on the door knocker…
…followed shortly thereafter by Marley’s ghost. Marley’s afterlife is going very badly indeed, and it will never get better. Marley wishes to spare Scrooge his everlasting torment, so he intervenes to get Scrooge something he really doesn’t deserve—a chance to reform before it’s too late.
The film makes excellent use of sound in this section. Marley’s shrieks are blood-curdling, and his movements are accompanied by a sort of sloshing sound, as well as the very loud clanking of his horribly heavy chain, the one he crafted in life, day by day, “of my own free will,” as he says.
Just before he leaves, Marley calls Scrooge to the window and shows him spectral, writhing figures, those who want to help other but “have lost the power, forever.” The figures remind me of a Breughel painting. He also tells Scrooge to expect, courtesy of his own intervention, visits from three spirits, and makes clear that Scrooge had better avail himself of this opportunity to avoid Marley’s fate.
“I wish to be left alone,” Scrooge told the men who visited his office on this day, soliciting for charity.
But does he, really? He is in a kind of living death, his days and nights carved in routines and silence. His beloved sister is dead, his partner is dead, he has rejected his nephew, and has lost the love of his fiancée, which seems to remove the last impediment to his fully indulging his worst impulses.
On this particular Christmas, after years of an unvarying routine, in which Scrooge not only treats other people as an offense to him personally, he shows himself no more generosity or mercy than he does others. We see him at dinner, asking for more bread. The waiter clearly knows him, so he tells Scrooge the bread will cost a halfpenny more. Scrooge says, “..no more bread.” He starves everybody, but he barely indulges himself. The harsh world he perceives, in which he has become an instrument of that harshness, offers him no escape.
Scrooge and the Spirit of Christmas Past at Scrooge’s old school…
…they see Scrooge’s beloved sister, Nanny, who has come to bring Scrooge home for Christmas, at last reconciled with the father who blames Scrooge for his mother’s dying after giving birth to him.
She reassures him that everyone loves him very much, and promises him he will never be lonely again, as long as she lives.
Scrooge spent his early years in exile from his family, at school, unretrieved during holidays. A terrible, lonely childhood. He weeps when his sister Fanny comes to bring him home, his father finally having forgiven him for supposedly having caused his wife’s death (in childbirth). Scrooge retreats into this posture, finding an identity in his hardness, his borderline criminality (when he and Marley buy out the embezzler), his righteous, unending anger and feeling that he is the one being shortchanged, the one being cheated. He thinks it’s about money, a realm where he can be master. But it’s a hedge against the terror of loneliness, a kind of mastery of it. He mocks Cratchit’s closeness with his family, his excitement at celebrating Christmas with them. It rings so hollow.
After the school visit, the Spirit takes Scrooge to an office Christmas party thrown by his first boss, Mr.Fezziwig, a gentle soul who refused to harden himself to the increasing ruthlessness of the changing world. We see Scrooge dancing with joy, and we see old Scrooge smile for the first time. The Spirit asks why Scrooge gives Fezziwig so much credit for throwing a party that must have cost what, “three or four pounds,” and Scrooge, before passing his thought through his hate filter, says something like “But look how much joy he brought, it would be worth a fortune…” before trailing off, lowering his head in shame, and saying he would like to have a word with his clerk, Cratchit.
Earlier that evening, Scrooge had looked scornfully at Cratchit, who has just wished him a Merry Christmas: “A Merry Christmas, sir, and you a clerk with 15 shillings a week and a wife and a family. talking about Merry Christmas”—he sneers. “I’ll retire to Bedlam.”
“Perhaps the machines aren’t such a good thing for mankind after all,” Scrooge to the guy trying to buy out Fezziwig. This is the first scene where we see Scrooge tempted. The film frames many shots in doors and windows, people looking out at hard truths, or Tiny Tim looking in the toy store window at the Christmas display, or Scrooge’s fiancée Alice looking out at the world she now faces without Scrooge, who has changed in his affections, shifting them from Alice to making money at any cost.
Sister Fanny is dying in childbirth, just as Scrooge’s mother did when she bore him.
Fanny’s deathbed: she whispers a demand that Scrooge promise he will care for her son (not sure why, where’s her husband?), so similar to Oliver Twist. (Q: Does this happen in the book? I don’t think so. But if it’s an addition to this adaptation, it’s an excellent one. It makes Scrooge’s antipathy for his nephew and the power of their final reconciliation much stronger.)
Then Alice breaks off their engagement. She is still the very pure, two-dimensional character she was in their first scene together. She is poor and kind, and Scrooge is becoming rich and has no time for kindness.
Alice, breaking off their engagement: May you be happy in the life you have chosen. Scrooge, defiantly, angrily: I shall be.
Just after this, we see Scrooge reporting for work at his new job with the future embezzler. Scrooge seems to be hanging his head, he is ashamed to have abandoned Fezziwig. Proximity to the Fanny death scene creates a relationship—Scrooge changes, moves toward self-seeking and away from connection, because of losing Fanny and hating his nephew for causing Fanny’s death. He is introduced to Marley, who will cause his incipient corruption to flower.
The Spirit’s next stop after Fanny’s death and Alice’s breaking off their engagement: Scrooge’s new job, where he meets his future partner in business and corruption, and possible intercessor—it is Marley who has won Scrooge this last chance to avoid Marley’s tortured fate.
Marley: The world is on the verge of new and great changes, Mr. Scrooge. Some of them, of necessity, will be violent. Do you agree? Scrooge: I think the world is becoming a very hard and cruel place, Mr. Marley. One must steel oneself to survive it and not be crushed under. Marley: I think we have many things in common, Mr. Scrooge. Scrooge: I hope so, Mr Marley.
Bob Cratchit, to Mrs Dilber, who has come to fetch Scrooge because Marley is dying. “He’ll come at seven.” Mrs Dilber: “I’ll try to get Mr Marley to hold out till then, I’m sure. Much obliged…and a Merry Christmas, if it ain’t out of keeping with the situation.”
Scrooge climbs Marley’s stairs, to Marley’s deathbed. At the top: the undertaker, played by the marvelous Ernest Thesiger, best known for his appearances in two James Whale films, The Old Dark House (1932) and as Dr. Frankenstein’s fellow mad scientist Dr. Pretorius in The Bride of Frankenstein (1935).
Ernest Thesiger as the undertaker
Scrooge: You don’t believe in letting the grass grow under your feet, do you? Undertaker/Thesiger: “Ours is a highly competitive profession, sir.”
“We’ve been wrong.” “…Wrong? Well, nobody can be right all the time. Nobody’s perfect. We’ve been no worse than the next man…or better, when it comes to that. You mustn’t reproach yourself, Jacob.” “We were wrong. Save yourself.” “Save myself…save myself from what?”
Marley expires having failed to make Scrooge see the peril he is in.
Mrs. Dilber turns to the undertaker: “Just like you said.” Undertaker: “I always know”.—funniest moment in the movie, reliably from Thesiger.
Spirit: Jacob Marley worked at your side for 18 years. He was the only friend you ever had. And what did you feel when you signed the register at his burial and took his money, his house, and his few mean sticks of furniture? Did you feel a little pity for him? Look at your face, Ebenezer, the face of a wretched, grasping, scraping, covetous old sinner.” “No…no…”
The clock tolls, Scrooge wakes up, the next Spirit is coming…

Review #8 Dec. 8, 2017 “Jim Carrey!”
Okay I know I have not posted since October nor have I done Cars 3 trust me I’m still editing it. But it’s Christmas time and I will be reviewing the one Christmas movie I have not seen. Yes I’m talking about the 2009 Disney film A Christmas Carol. And it’s technically a horror story!
So a bit of back story on the story. A Christmas Carol was written by Charles Dickens in 1843. Now because of the publication date the story is under the public domain, which explains why there have been multiple plays, musicals, movies, and the annoying Christmas special almost every show has done with the story. Honestly if I were to compare it to anything, I can’t because it has been retold to so many generations that the story is a bit different to everyone.
I won’t go into how Dickens got the inspiration for the ghost story because the film The Man Who Invented Christmas will. Anyways I never saw it because I grew up with the Mickey Mouse version, the 1984 and 1999 film with because, THEY TERRIFY ME TO THIS DAY. Especially with Goofy being the ghost of Marley, Pete being the ghost of Christmas future, oh and the ghosts of present and future in the 1999 and ‘84 versions for their reasons. Honestly I can’t compare the film to the book it wouldn’t be fair to me.
So without further ado there are SPOILERS. Though the story has been told many times, there might be a few who haven’t heard the story before. Anyways let’s review 2009′s A Christmas Carol!
Now this story can be told in the modern times and in fact the Looney Tunes special did so with Daffy Duck as Scrooge, but know one thing Ebeneezer Scrooge can be anyone.
The film is set in mid 1800′s London. It starts with Ebeneezer Scrooge, voiced by Jim Carey. He being with the undertaker to be the witness on his partner Jacob Marley, voiced by Gary Oldman, who had died on Christmas Eve. Seven years pass and Scrooge has an apprentice of sorts Bob Cratchit, also voiced Gary Oldman. Scrooge well, he’s a cheap hermit. I honestly can’t paraphrase so much, but I’ll try. So he’s a dick to his employees, a dick to his only nephew, played by Colin Firth. Yeah he’s not a people person, so Cratchit begs for Christmas off, caving in from his nephew he allows Cratchit the day off.
When he returns home he is met by the ghost of Jacob Marley warning him that three ghosts will appear to him. And they do as followed:   -  The ghost of Christmas past reminds Scrooge of his more youthful days when he was in love before giving in to money.   - The ghost of Christmas present shows him what goes on during the holiday without him, especially gaining guilt from people badmouthing him before he shows Scrooge Ignorance and Want before his death.   -  And the ghost of Christmas future, which shows him his funeral and how even the undertaker wouldn’t be there.
Soon Ebeneezer wakes and it’s Christmas morning, there he’s decided to change his ways dining with Cratchit and visiting Fred before the famous closing lines, “God bless us everyone”.
So how do I feel about this interpretation? Well it did what a ghost story should do, it scared me. Marley appearing and the the ghosts all scaring him, it scared me as well. However I have heard the story so many times it felt like I was being told the same story, but different. When I first saw the trailer I grew curious, it was 2009 there were other 3D animated movies out that year, Up, 9, and Planet 51 as example, why did it look so odd? I was thinking that until I saw who the director was, Robert Zemeckis. The same man that directed The Polar Express, and there the animation was extremely creepy, and here it’s kinda the same. There is a difference with the animation though, it looks more like it would be in a video game instead of a film.
There was something odd with some parts of the animation. Though I’m not sure if it was the lighting, when the ghost of Christmas future takes Scrooge to his grave the background was all white with no texture or snowflakes, the other is with the ghost of Christmas past, he would pause and flicker but turn slowly if he were a robot. I might be wrong so don’t take my word for those.
There was something odd. To me at least while with two of the ghosts, it felt rushed. Here’s what I mean:    - Ghost of Christmas Pass: he meets the love of his life then she leaves two seconds later    - Ghost of Christmas Present:  the entire sequence felt rushed to introduce Ignorance and Want
Many have heard this story time and time again, with only a few iterations with songs added in. The music though it felt too perfect, it wasn’t there when you needed a jump scare and it was when it was needed, but I understand this was for kids but, to me the audience would have felt more into the Scrooge with the third ghost if there was no music at all. Yes music can drive a story, but sometimes it’s not needed. It was even odd hearing Andrea Bocelli at the end credits, I was expecting a Josh Groban song really.
I honestly loved the voice actors. Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman pretty much were most of the cast because of their abilities to change into different personas at will. Colin Firth felt like a cameo for Fred, but honestly it felt right. Bob Hoskins’ felt nice as well they were bringing so many talented people that can bring stories to life in their own way.
There is one main issue, and it’s the same for The Polar Express. There are so many wonderful scenes in IMAX, but when watching the films at home it’s turned to meh. Doing research this movie is solely for IMAX because it’s the first Disney animated movie for it with The Polar Express also being released in IMAX.
Final notes, I am afraid of the ghost of Christmas past because the face is literally Jim Carrey.  Personally I give the movie a 4/10. The story is wonderful and so is the film, but in my opinion like The Polar Express it should only be seen in an IMAX theater or in a VR set so the viewer would enjoy it more.
I do recomend this, but I recomend the older versions more, not because of the animation, but because you will feel more interested for a more kid friendly version, I would the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic special. The pacing is good for half an hour and the music is awesome. Honestly here’s a clip of the Ghost of Christmas Future’s song, they were able to make the story their own for the show but also simple for the audience to understand. Go to 1:30 if you don’t want to watch the Ghost of Christmas Present.

The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
New Post has been published on https://www.vivrelereve.co.uk/untitled/
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
It’s that time of the year again. Merrymaking, friends, family, gift giving, eating and drinking – Christmas is most definitely upon us.
Christmas movies are a fun way to get in the Christmas spirit! Enjoy the best Christmas movies in no particular order, from old school classics like Miracle on 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life, to newer favorites like Elf and Arthur Christmas, for a festive evening at home.
I’ll admit, I also have that Christmas 24 TV channel on all the time over Christmas. I have a love for cheesy, predictable, cheaply made Hallmark Christmas movies. You know the ones where the two main characters find true love through a series of Christmas related mishaps? Usually involving a cute kid and the real father Christmas. Perfection.
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List:
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
I am not exaggerating when I state that this is the best Christmas movie of all time! This is all despite some of the worst on screen singing in a musical of all time by Michael Caine – and some of the cheesiest song lyrics ever to grace our ears.
This movie is a masterpiece that celebrates a classic Charles Dickens tale, Christmas and Fun. It combines masterful storytelling with world class humour – with just a dash of pantomime fun.
Everyone needs to see this movie at least once in their lives. But you should preferably watch it once a year at Christmas, whilst snuggled up with loved ones and friends.
Polar Express (2004)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
A modern yet retro take on the Christmas theme. The ideals and hopes of one young boy with new acquaintances and friends, are all express-bound for the North pole on Christmas Eve. An almost ethereal town-scene is created as Santa and his elves bring a certain rational to the festive gift-giving extravaganza. A real North Pole community, a real Santa and real helpers assist the film to appeal to both old and young alike. Most of the characters learn something about themselves on this journey north, largely courtesy of Tom Hanks’ ticket collector but in the end the festive feeling of warmth and goodwill rounds off a quite delightful film.
  Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
An excellent re-telling of the Dickens’ classic. Also a wonderful reunion of classic Disney friends who have not appeared on the screen in a very long time. Characters from “Ichabod and Mr. Toad” appear in here (including Mr. Toad himself as Fezziwig) and of course, the original classic Disney villain, Pegleg Pete, take a terrific turn as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The Giant from Mickey & The Beanstalk is here as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Jiminy Cricket as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Goofy as Jacob Marley. The list of classic characters just goes on and on.
  Home Alone (1990)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
Introduce your kids early to the ‘Home Alone’ movie, and I can almost guarantee they will love it. More over, it will become a Christmas tradition in your home for years to come.
Macaulay Culkin stars as Kevin, a young lad who feels like a fish out of water in a family who doesn’t treat him with any respect. This Christmas, he is accidentally left behind while his family flies to France on holiday. He isn’t all that upset about that, and enjoys all the trappings of being able to do what he likes in the house all by himself. However, he finds himself having to defend his home against a pair of idiotic burglars. Laughs and action in equal measure are ensured.
Christmas with the Kranks (2004)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
This is one of those films that divides opinions. For some it’s rubbish, for others it’s a masterpiece. In my household the Christmas season doesn’t truly start without having watched Christmas with the Kranks. It’s a fun movie about a couple trying to skip Christmas because their daughter has gone to join the peace corps, but the only problem is they are from a very traditional christmassy neighbourhood, who are adamant they will follow the Christmas traditions i.e. putting up frosty the snowman. Great fun, never seems to get old (we’ve watched it for over 10 years now) and full of true christmassy spirit! We absolutely love it!
  Home Alone 2 (1992)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
‘Home Alone 2’ is an exception in the movie world, it’s one of those sequels that is every bit as good as the first, if not better.
The quite brilliant Macaulay Culkin reprises his role as Kelvin, whose family, as strange as it might seem, somehow manage to leave him ‘alone’. He makes it to the airport this time, but whilst his family hop on the plane to their holiday in Miami, Kevin takes the wrong plane to New York City. Of course, the resourceful kid ends up having the time of his life in the big apple, but there are lots of twists, turns and adventures along the way. The rest of the main original cast are also in here, including the hapless bandits who have escaped from jail, as well as a wonderful part for Tim Curry as a hotel manager.
It’s funny throughout, particularly heart-warming towards the end, and just good fun. As the second doesn’t follow on from the first, you can jump straight in and watch it without seeing ‘Home Alone’, but I can almost guarantee that you’ll want to watch it more than once.
  Elf (2003)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
Ferrell starts as Buddy, the ‘elf’ of the title, a baby mistakenly taken to the north pole and raised along with the rest of Santa’s elven helpers. As he grows up he can’t understand why he towers 4 feet over all the other elves, or why he doesn’t have pointed ears? Eventually, he learns of his origins and sets off to the big city to find his real father.
Once there, he becomes comically confused by the modern day interpretation of Christmas and starts to despair when the true spirit of Christmas seems to be lost. Think of this film as a cross between Dudley Moore’s ‘Santa Claus The Movie’ and Steve Martins ‘The Jerk’ and you will get the idea. Most of the fun in this film comes from Ferrell’s charming and at the same time manic performance, and he clearly carries the whole film, although the supporting cast are also strong.
A wonderful family film, this is one the most delightful Christmas films ever made!
  Arthur Christmas (2011)
      The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
The plot centres around the dysfunctional Claus family – three generations of them, anyway – each beset by their own insecurities, age-related issues and family disputes, apart from the family matriarch, a kind of Christmas Wonder-Woman, clad in plaid sweaters and capable of phenomenal technical feats and knowledge.
Comparisons with that other animated Christmas features are inevitable, but where that was almost industrial in its portrayal of the Christmas concept, Arthur Christmas is delightfully cheeky and very British. Laughs abound, with a lot of fun being poked at Sat Navs, bright children, discordant family Christmas dinners, youthful enthusiasm and board games but, working on several levels, the film also examines frustrated ambition, competitive families and misguided motivations. It’s rare, but this film pulls off the trick of appealing to all ages yet avoiding sentimentality.
  Miracle on 34th street (1994)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
Out of all the films which have a Santa in them, I have to say that this is probably the best. The story is basically this; Kris Kringle is the department Santa at ‘Cole’s’ and when rival toy stores realise that they are losing business, they set about trying to get rid of what they consider to be, an old loony who claims that he is Santa. But they are very wrong.
The plot of the whole film is great, the acting can’t be faulted, especially from Richard Attenbourgh who plays the role of Santa very convincingly. If you are looking for a nice festive film that you can warm to immediately, and that the whole family can enjoy, then this is the film for you.
    National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Griswolds, Clark is food additives expert who works for a company that doesn’t appreciate him. He sets high standards for holiday events that no one can live up to and is notorious for dragging his grudging family along on every painstaking detail of every scheme.
But now Clark just wants to stay at home in the snowy Chicago suburbs for a ‘fun, old-fashioned, family Christmas’ and he’s going to let nothing stop him. His enthusiasm for the holidays manages to infect the audience and you’ll be rooting for him the whole way. He’s an anti-Scrooge and if you’re having a Christmas crisis then you need to watch this movie. Any disasters can be overcome.
But that’s easier said than done. He didn’t bargain on bickering family members, a house covered in non-working Christmas lights, a seriously over-cooked turkey, snotty neighbors making fun of him or Cousin Eddie and his family turning up unannounced to sponge some Christmas cheer off him. This movie has become a Yuletide classic in this house and must be watched every year. Since Christmas is full of annual traditions this film is definitely one you should add to the list.
  All 3 Tim Allen Santa Clause Movies (1994, 2002 & 2006)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
There are some movies that just have to be watched every Christmas, and this is one of them. It is a feelgood film for a feelgood time of year. The story is simple. Scott Calvin (note his initials) is a divorced father who frequently lets his young son down due to his busy working life. That is until he accidentally kills Santa Claus. To his disbelief and dismay, and his sons delight, he has to become the new Santa. The film follows his changing life and attitudes and shows the newly developing relationship between father and son. There is nothing taxing or complex about this movie, just a heartwarming, funny story that is ideal for all the family. Watch and enjoy.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
Jim Carrey stars as the onion eating Grinch, who resides upon mount crumpet. Who’s contempt for the happy-go-lucky people of Who-ville has made his heart 2 sizes too small. When he decides to sabotage Christmas for all the residents of Whoville he comes upon little Cindy-lou Who, who teaches him the value of Christmas and family gatherings etc. As the story unravels you find out why his heart is undersized, and why he shuts himself off from Whoville. Anthony Hopkins narrates. An all round feel good comedy, suitable for all ages.
  Jingle All The Way (1996)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
Who would have thought one of the greatest action hero’s of the cinema, would be in a Christmas kids film, about a father trying to get his son a turbo man doll for Christmas? Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Howard a man on a mission to get his son the present he has always wanted, TURBO MAN! Still even though it’s a kids film that doesn’t mean there is no action. It has comedy, action, happiness and a great level of Christmas fun.
  Santa Paws 1 & 2 (2010 & 2012)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
It’s Disney, it’s got Santa Claus and talking dogs so how could it not be great family entertainment? Yes small children get locked in the basement by the wicked witch type character and yes Santa does appear to be on his deathbed but everything is made right in the end by love and the magic of Christmas, that’s what its all about. The movies tell a timeless story about love and Christmas in an enjoyable way and it’s great fun.
  Rise of the Guardians (2012)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
This is a wonderful story for the whole family. It’s brilliant from the word go, just one word of warning, really young children might get a bit scared of the baddie! What makes Rise of the Guardians such a fun movie to watch is that it has the same story concept that made Marvel’s The Avengers fantastic. Team up all your favorite heroes against a common enemy, in this case it’s not against the God of Mischief, but rather the Boogie Man himself.
We have all watched Santa and Easter Bunny movies, but when have we ever seen them teamed up? The Guardians are a super hero team comprised with unique team members with specific skill sets. Sandy (The Sandman) has an intense, almost Japanese anime style, battle with Pitch using the powers of his shape shifting sand. E. Aster Bunnymund (The Easter Bunny) has an Australian accent and duel wields boomerangs that he accurately blasts demon nightmare horses. North is a warrior armed with two cutlass swords and drives a sleigh. Guardians may not have Joss Weadon writing and directing the movie, it does have the vision of Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy franchise/Pan’s Labyrinth/Book of Life) as the film’s executive producer.
  It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
Frank Capra’s seasonal classic originally began life as a Christmas card and amazingly was a big flop at the time of it’s release. It was only through television showings that it became one of the best loved movies of all time. Strangely enough for a movie which turns up most Christmases. It’s actually a quite dark movie taking in despair and suicide.
James Stewart was born to play George Bailey and Donna Reed is beautiful as his wife and then there’s Henry Travers, unforgettable as Clarence the guardian angel. Sentimental without being slushy this is a movie that demands you feel good having watched it. An essential part of Christmas. Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings!
  Scrooged (1988)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
I watch this movie several times each year, starting about October time and finishing with a Christmas eve viewing! Its an excellent, entertaining, funny, emotional and heart-warming version of A Christmas Carol. The ending scene and end-title soundtrack never fail to bring a tear to the eye and a warm fuzzy feeling. Light those candles, pour the mulled wine and enjoy!
  The Holiday (2006)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
A romantic comedy set in two locations; Surrey, England and L.A, USA. When Amanda breaks up with her cheating boyfriend, she decides she needs to get away from it all so she searches online for ‘vacation hotspots’. While trawling through the internet, she comes across a House Exchange. Where she meets Iris, a writer for who also wants to get away from it all. The two decide to swap houses for two weeks, so Iris jets off to L.A while Amanda is stuck in Snowy Surrey. All in all a definite must have in your movie collection.
Meet Me In St. Louis (1944)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
One of those nearly perfect movies: a film musical that incorporates its story and songs seamlessly. Featuring a cast of superb performers and all the technical ‘know how’ that Old Hollywood was so great at. Recreating a world gone by that the movie audience could step right into, in this case 1903/04 St. Louis, Missouri. Judy Garland added to her immortality with this portrayal of a young woman in love with ‘The Boy Next Door’. A family comedy/drama with dark overtones, this beautiful Technicolor musical is one of the great classics of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
  The Family Man (2000)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
One of Nicolas Cage’s best performances. The Family Man is just great entertainment. Cage plays Jack Campbell who is a wheeler-dealer on Wall Street, wealthy, womanizer who loves his Ferrari! One night he says the wrong thing to an angel. Who decides to give him a glimpse of what his life could have been had he made a different choice. He wakes up the next morning in the arms of Kate and two adorable children! There are so many laugh-out-loud moments, as well as moments that will bring you to tears, and an ending that doesn’t spoon feed you an answer.
  Trading Places (1983)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper has seen many incarnations from Disney to The Simpsons. But none have been as funny as Trading Places. Which proves just how funny Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Murphy used to be.
Louise Winthorpe III is a spoiled, snobby managing director at the Duke & Duke commodities brokerage. Billy Ray Valentine is a poverty-stricken street hustler. Randolph Duke makes a wager with his brother Mortimer that the men can be successfully swapped. The con is on as Valentine is plucked from the streets and Winthorpe is ungraciously dumped on them. There’s loads of fun watching him hit absolute rock bottom while Valentine quickly becomes spoiled and snobby himself.
Who cannot resist Eddie Murphy’s foreign exchange student disguise or Ackroyd’s Lionel Josef. Even the gorilla in the train is a brilliant character. For those of you who love dark, cruel comedies Trading Places is utterly essential. It may be very 80s, but it never gets old.
  Gremlins (1984)
The Ultimate Christmas Movie List!
Gremlins is one of those fantastic Christmas films that can be watched anytime. But has an added magic when watched during the Christmas season. It’s a film that nearly everyone has seen and so unites the land in the knowledge that a gremlin can only survive for so long in a microwave. The film is playful and fun, so as a child I loved it. It courted controversy when it first came out but it is essentially a family comedy and the violence is basically cartoon style and adds to the general naughtiness of the film.
The film was a marketing success with the cute Gizmo and a few Gremlins with distinct individuality. The humour of the film was typical of the emerging comedy-horror genre of the 80s. With other blockbusters such as Beetlejuice, Critters and Ghostbusters. The film was always going to be a success and a family favourite.
