The Bolthole by aideomai, Tepre, and GallaPlacidia

I'm absolutely thrilled to finally share my first fic bind here on Tumblr! I completed this bind back in November, and it introduced me to so many wonderful people.

You can find pictures and detailed explanations of my process under the cut.

This is "The Bolthole" by Aideomai, Tepre, and (formerly) GallaPlacidia on Ao3. The cover design is adapted from "The Little Brother" (1902) by Josiah Flynt. The typeset is my own.

I fell in love with this cover the moment I saw it, and wanted to try to recreate it with book cloth. As a hobbyist book binder, I like to try to revitalize older designs from the public domain. There are so few copies of this book left in the world, so I thought it would be fun to give it new life as the cover of a contemporary story.

The cover is made out of three different colors of book cloth from the Allure and Verona lines. The book cloth and endpapers were bought from Hollander's.

I used my Cameo 4 and a strong tack mat to cut the design out of each color of book cloth. I then assembled the pattern like a puzzle. It was MUCH harder than it sounds! Some of the pieces were incredibly thin and fragile, and they were difficult to keep track of.

For the foiling, I used my Cameo 4 and the We R Memory Keepers fine tip foil quill for everything but the spine, which I did by hand. I foiled immediately after I cut, without removing my mat from the machine. This helped me line everything up. It did not, however, prevent me from sweating bullets as my machine worked.

This method was, frankly, torture, but I'm really glad that I tried it. Now that I've had a nice long break, I'd like to try it again soon. I love running my hands over this book, and the texture of the book cloth feels wonderful under my fingertips. I do, however, have a few words of caution. Do not try this out unless you have book cloth to burn! Here are some pictures of just a few of my failures.

The Cameo 4 is not your friend. Your cut-outs can and will get fucked up for no reason. If the mat isn't sticky enough, or the blade isn't sharp enough, or the fabric doesn't adhere properly, your design could get completely shredded. I strongly recommend that you avoid Verona book cloth, or anything with a paper backing and loose fibers. It was absolute hell to work with. When it wasn't shredded by the machine, it was fraying like crazy. Acrylic coated cloth is the way to go if you want clean lines. And, you know, your sanity intact.

This was my most challenging bind to date, but I learned a lot! Aside from experimenting with book cloth, automated foiling, and my Cameo 4, it was also my first time formatting, printing, and sewing a text block. I'm incredibly grateful for all of the online tutorials and wonderful people who helped me make this bind a reality!

Bound: The Bolthole

The third in my quest to bind all of GallaPlacidia’s fics. This one, of course, has two other authors so it’s actually still on ao3.

I think I'm getting better, but I also keep fucking up random things, like, this time I don't think I adhered the interfacing on well enough, so there was a loose spot on the back of the case. And then for some reason, the end paper in the back did not want to go on right, presumably because I made a mistake earlier in the process.

It's all fine, though. I was able to trim off the part that was wonky, and overall it looks fine. I got thicker chipboard, too, and I'm also going to be trying a different method of making the linen into bookcloth (I also found that there's some glue seepage with my current method.)

Oh, and the body font for this one (and The Bucket List, but not Ship of Theseus) is Corundum Text. Chapter headings are P22 Underground (man, I loved that font in the early 2000s.)

I'm currently working on binding a much longer fic, which should be interesting!

Helloo! Short question but can you maybe tell me if the fic "The Bolthole" has cheating or emotional cheating going on on Dracos part? I worry because of the Ron/Draco implication in the tags... I would rather just read a dronarry fic than instead of a Drarry fic at least I know going into it😅😂

Hi anon! It’s been a couple years since I’ve read The Bolthole so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but iirc there’s not much there beyond your typical bromance. Draco and Ron share a peck at NYE and there are subtle hints here and there that they could become a thing if they so chose to explore it, but they never go there and the fic makes it very clear that Harry’s the one Draco is in love with. I hope that helped!

Pagan in Bolthole (where he is a no good, very bad man).

“Nervous?” he murmurs. His thumb moves idly, stroking her skin.

“Why?” She manages, somehow, to keep her voice neutral.

“Because—” Pagan shifts again until he’s sitting sideways beside her, bringing him even closer to her face. His hand slides up her jaw as he does; she feels his finger just about brush the lobe of her ear and she shivers. “—you know I’m about to kiss you.”

She closes her eyes for a moment and swallows again. It’s hard to think. She’s so warm, the fire and the raksi and Pagan’s body close to hers all make her feel so warm and so relaxed and she just wants to keep feeling good like this. When she opens her eyes again, he’s still only looking at her, still that small, amused smile playing on his lips.

“I don’t want you to,” Amita says, and it sounds weak even to her.

“Oh, I think you do. But it’s alright, I know you couldn’t possibly admit it.” He runs the pad of his thumb over her lower lip for a moment. “Well, tell you what. Just tell yourself there’s nothing you could do to stop me, hm? You’re my prisoner, after all. And…” He leans closer, nose brushing against hers, and his voice is a purr so quiet it’s almost a whisper, “When you kiss me back, you can blame the raksi.”

Sonja sighs, as she knows that telling that to normal RHN Admirals would just get them very angry at you, for insulting their Navy’s honor, but with Shannon’s past deployments to the Confederacy, it was more like creating a spark. Near a bunch of fuel vapor, that was. She may hide the anger on her face in public, but she’d hack you and post blackmail on the holonet in private.

I am not out on the streets. I have my boltholes where I can safely stay. I equipped them with everything I need, exactly for emergencies like at the moment which require me to stay away from Bakerstreet. And I still do prefer the term use over abuse.
