My mom listened to the locked tomb audiobooks and refuses to read anything longer than an article on her phone, so I printed and bound a quarto copy of the official short stories by Tamsyn Muir (The Mysterious Study of Dr. Sex; As Yet Unsent; and The Unwanted Guest, which technically isn’t out yet) as an Xmas gift.

Away Childish Things by @letteredlettered
I'm so excited to finally share this bind of one of my all time favorite fics! Thanks to lettered's generous binding policy, I decided to go all out.
This bind has a foiled cover and spine, hand sewn silk endbands, and thirteen custom chapter headers. It was also my first time rounding and backing.
You can find more pictures and information about my process under the cut.
For the cover and spine, I recreated the design of Beasts of the Field (1902) by William J. Long.
Tumblr media
I wanted something that captured both the whimsy and maturity of the story, and this cover fit my vision perfectly. It also gave me the opportunity to recreate another antique cover from the public domain.
Unfortunately, the design was a bit complicated for my Cameo 4, so I was unable to fill the lines in. You can also tell that the foil did not adhere properly near the bottom, so the flowers are lighter than I would like them to be.
Tumblr media
Because of the trouble I was having with my Cameo, I decided to foil the spine by hand. I deeply regretted this decision two hours later, and it took me four hours to finish foiling. My wrist still hurts!
Tumblr media
Sewing the headbands was my absolute favorite part. I was encouraged to try them by a lovely binder on Instagram, and I ended up completely addicted. I splurged on some fancy silk thread so I could give this fic the royal treatment it deserves! I think they look like beautiful little caterpillars.
As for the rounding and backing... I'm not going to talk about it. Nightmare. Lots of nervous sweating. Emotional agony. Next topic!
Tumblr media
I worked on the typeset back at the beginning of January when I had some time off, and it took me a solid week of obsessive editing to complete. My sister suggested that I use Harry and Draco's patronuses for the chapter art, but there unfortunately aren't many public domain illustrations of deer and foxes playing together.
It was at that point that I also decided that I wanted the animals to match the respective ages of Harry and Draco and the tone of each chapter. For the 13 chapters I ended up editing 25 different illustrations together. The bulk of these are taken from vintage versions of Bambi and Reynard the Fox. It's possible that a few stock images from 1980s nature books snuck in there, but I did my best to keep them all pre 1925.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not a skilled editor, and some of these are worse than others, but I'm quite proud of what I was able to cobble together. On the final page I put a young fox and deer running off together. I wanted it to seem like Harry and Draco's inner children had been freed.
I'm a bit embarrassed to say that this bind took me about 4-5 months to complete! I started in early January, and went wildly off track learning how to round, back, and sew headbands. And then I was hit by some killer creative block that only lifted last week!
There are still many things I could improve on, but I'm so proud of everything that I learned and accomplished with this bind! A big thank you to lettered for inspiring me with such a wonderful story. <3

A fanbinding of Hawks and Hands by Dira Sudis @dsudis from AO3
This one ended up at almost 600 pages, set in EB Garamond! About 200k in total. It’s in the mail today, so I can post photos I’ve already shared with the author. Hopefully it will be delivered before Week 1 of @ds30below is done!

More details under the cut!
I have been working on this for what feels like months. I had the typeset and design complete and then did a complete 180 and decided on the notebook style theme.
Each chapter header is different, with something that references that particular chapter in different types of handwriting!
The cover incorporates both James' football team with a Hogwarts football team emblem and Regulus' art with paint splatters complete with red endbands and a red marker ribbon with a football charm.
I carried on the sketchy/messy theme onto the jacket as well as using this beautiful artwork from cuckooboo, who kindly let me use their art for this!
I probably wouldn't have completed this if it weren't for @zerobindery, I feel like every step something went wrong but she was so supportive and my biggest cheerleader throughout this, ily ❤️

Binding My Own Fanfiction - The Final Result!
It's done. After about a week or so, the process is complete! (This excludes typsetting.) While it may not be perfect because I made so many mistakes, I'm really happy with the way it turned out considering it's my second bind ever.
I also wanted to show a little picture of the headband I added. It looks red in the picture, but it's actually magenta to match the flower on the cover.
Final lessons:
Stop dicking around with the cover before you're done!! I brought it with around with me to my parents place where I do the spray painting and strained it just playing around.
Less is more for spray painting too
For the love of everything, leave more room on the bookboard when trimming. It's shorter than the actual book content!!
Anyway, this was super fun and I am trying to figure out what my next project will be. None of my other writing is complete yet, so I won't bind until they're complete and edited.
If and when I get my printer, I'll be back with dustjackets!

Fanbind - Cleopatra by dontaskmedude
So one of the first fics I read in fandom was Cleopatra by dontaskmedude and let me tell you, the way I read this story constantly. So it was absolutely at the top of my list for a book binding project. So I present to you my fourth bind!
Typeset: Adobe InDesign Case: 3 piece Bradel Bind using 1.5mm matboard Size: Legal Quarto (mass market paperback size)
I used Trajen Pro and Centaur STD (the latter which is used in the offical asoiaf material) for the fonts. I believe I ended up using Garamond for the High Valyrian.
Purple boocloth for the spine, and monet decorative paper for the paper cover. You can't quite see but I did burgundy endbands. And of course a red ribbon for the bookmark
Pics behind the cut!
(this was made for PERSONAL use only)
Owl's Nest Press is an imprint of the @renegadepublishing guild.
If anyone knows how to get in touch with the author, please pass this along!

my first bookbinding project
i created this little stab-bound notebook filled with loose leaf paper over the weekend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i made several mistakes:
i didn't have the right tools to punch holes in the paper, so it was a long process of widening them the right amount for the needle to be able to go through several times
i didn't line up the holes on the front and back boards properly, so the back board has two sets of holes!
my corners could've been nicer
i couldn't get my needle to come back up through the middle of the book to tie off at the end, so i had to tie it off around the front
i'm going to be doing some more research before i try anything else, but this was a good experience for finding out what i don't know, and what other tools might be useful if this is something i decide to keep pursuing (for now it is!)
although it was frustrating, i had a lot of fun, and i'm still happy with the finished product. i don't know how many stab-bound books i'll make because i prefer my notebooks to lie flat, but i'll try this at least once more in the future!
tutorial that i followed can be found here

I'm like super normal and not unhinged in the slightest (I spent 3 days formatting, printing, and binding a niche internet story about sci fi football into a 280 page physical book)

Au where Hollow and Ghost survive and then SILKSONG happens but- hear me out, hear me out-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hornet was so, so young when the infection destroyed Hallownest. All her abilities in silk are derived from violence and hunting— unlike her weaver brethren, she never delved deep into the arts or healing beyond the basics to survive the destroyed husk of the kingdom.
This has direct consequences when Hollow survives in HK. Despite Hornet’s best attempts, Hollow’s wounds don’t heal quite right.
Hornet can’t forgive herself, never mind the insane reality she managed to save a voided godling from the brink.
(When Pharloom steals her, when she realizes there’s a history of thread, where she can learn how to spin silk maybe to heal-
-at the terrible cost of herself to save people she loves?
Hornet’s never been great about self preservation. All her life, she’s watched other people throw themselves into the abyss.
Now it’s her turn.)
Tumblr media
Alas. Her siblings do not agree with that mindset. And they’re going to get their sister back, hell or high water.
ANYWAYS SOME OTHER DOODLES
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s more of this au if people wanna see!

I made another book! This time I tried my hand at binding a copy of @marvinhere‘s tumblr folktales typeset. Endpapers were chosen because they kinda looked like that “do you love the color of the sky” post, and then I tipped them in upside down 🤦‍♀️ oh well, it’s not super noticeable

The Bolthole by aideomai, Tepre, and GallaPlacidia
I'm absolutely thrilled to finally share my first fic bind here on Tumblr! I completed this bind back in November, and it introduced me to so many wonderful people.
You can find pictures and detailed explanations of my process under the cut.
This is "The Bolthole" by Aideomai, Tepre, and (formerly) GallaPlacidia on Ao3. The cover design is adapted from "The Little Brother" (1902) by Josiah Flynt. The typeset is my own.
Tumblr media
I fell in love with this cover the moment I saw it, and wanted to try to recreate it with book cloth. As a hobbyist book binder, I like to try to revitalize older designs from the public domain. There are so few copies of this book left in the world, so I thought it would be fun to give it new life as the cover of a contemporary story.
The cover is made out of three different colors of book cloth from the Allure and Verona lines. The book cloth and endpapers were bought from Hollander's.
I used my Cameo 4 and a strong tack mat to cut the design out of each color of book cloth. I then assembled the pattern like a puzzle. It was MUCH harder than it sounds! Some of the pieces were incredibly thin and fragile, and they were difficult to keep track of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the foiling, I used my Cameo 4 and the We R Memory Keepers fine tip foil quill for everything but the spine, which I did by hand. I foiled immediately after I cut, without removing my mat from the machine. This helped me line everything up. It did not, however, prevent me from sweating bullets as my machine worked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This method was, frankly, torture, but I'm really glad that I tried it. Now that I've had a nice long break, I'd like to try it again soon. I love running my hands over this book, and the texture of the book cloth feels wonderful under my fingertips. I do, however, have a few words of caution. Do not try this out unless you have book cloth to burn! Here are some pictures of just a few of my failures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Cameo 4 is not your friend. Your cut-outs can and will get fucked up for no reason. If the mat isn't sticky enough, or the blade isn't sharp enough, or the fabric doesn't adhere properly, your design could get completely shredded. I strongly recommend that you avoid Verona book cloth, or anything with a paper backing and loose fibers. It was absolute hell to work with. When it wasn't shredded by the machine, it was fraying like crazy. Acrylic coated cloth is the way to go if you want clean lines. And, you know, your sanity intact.
This was my most challenging bind to date, but I learned a lot! Aside from experimenting with book cloth, automated foiling, and my Cameo 4, it was also my first time formatting, printing, and sewing a text block. I'm incredibly grateful for all of the online tutorials and wonderful people who helped me make this bind a reality!

Now that the book has been delivered, I can share photos! into the wild blue by @andfasterthings (aka honeydripping on ao3), the author copy! My copy is still sitting in my desk awaiting my latest crochet project’s completion XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The illustrations were free from Heritage Library, a personal favorite source for images. The HTV was pretty challenging to weed but I think it turned out well enough. (I did notice the missing tittle in the author copy, seconds before I was about to seal it in an envelope—just in time for a quick fix!
More photos/commentary/stuff under the cut!
Tumblr media
I have a new metadata page layout! I’m enjoying all the space. The chapter pages were tough to get aligned right—both the first and last content pages needed to be on odd pages, so I had to do some finagling. Got it done, though!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some in-progress shots! I feel like I’ve gotten a lot more responsible lately, I’ve only just started labeling my boards XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ink drops endpapers are a godsend. Favorite collection of printed papers, easily. The next photo is the basic typeset—this one is set entirely in IM Fell Great Primer.
And finally, the open-down-the-middle shot, one I love to include. The spine throw! The way the boards nestle! And my most even endbands to date. And the way the paper lays so nicely, even though they’re short grain! Gorgeous!!

🌊𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝑼𝒑 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒚 @solmussa🌊
As soon as me and Paisley started screaming about this to Michaela I KNEW I wanted to make this for them both and I knew exactly how I wanted it to look.
The typeset for this is ⭐️chunky⭐️ and it only just fit the guillotine but it was worth the extra arm workout and I had so much fun putting all the little details in it.
The front cover is inspired by the surfing motifs, hand drawn in Procreate and then used throughout the bind purely because I loved it. It ended up being 12 layers of HTV and it was my first go at layering this much HTV 🫠
Bind 3/3 for @zerobindery and Paisley 🩵 I couldn’t have done these without either of you 🩵

Binding My Own Fanfiction // art upgrade
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of you might remember my fanfiction bind and the temporary dustjacket I made, but my commission finally came in!
This was also supposed to be my submission for @tamlinweek Day 7 - Free day!
Read the fic on AO3.
Thank you @snaxk for the amazing, amazing cover!
I couldn't be happier; it's everything I wanted and more 🥹🥹🥹
I also want to thank @lucychanart and @deemsum for letting me use their art as inserts!
Your art was just so perfect for some of the key chapters in the fic!
A couple of notes for those interested in the process:
The title is actually gold, but it's hard to capture the gorgeous sheen on photo -- his eyes and earrings also are gold
I was having major, major issues with my gold pen. You can see a bit of the splatter -- this was my 2nd attempt printing. I didn't want to waste ink, paper and paint as I am binding a second copy for my best friend -- she is my beta reader, my editor and my first fan. Thoughts & prayers that my materials will AGREE with me!
I can't afford fancy dustjacket paper right now, but I did want to seal the art/gold paint. The texture you see on the photo is actually from matte-drying glue. I actually enjoy the texture a lot!!
Already that I am a chaotic crafter, I also injured myself and got blood on my materials RIP so be careful out there ya'll
The paper I used for the inserts are vellum, they are not currently glued, but I will do it for my second version.

On the idea of Theseus's Ship: in the end, it's still his, isn't it? It was known as Theseus's, and it will continue to be known as Theseus's.
Even after he has returned to the ground which grew the wood of the hammer used to nail the ship's frame, Even after generations of new wood have rotted and the sails are rags clinging to threads, Even after millennia,
it will still be Theseus's Ship.
Thank you for bringing us home.
Goodnight, Phosphophyllite.
