#that's my last tip
hi sam!!! been thinking about maybe possibly getting into lifting weights MAYBE (cause I want my arms to look good). do you have any advice for starting out? like did you go to a gym and get a trainer or did you watch youtube videos or do a specific program? I may not even stick with it cause I'm really bad at keeping up with exercise, but it's worth a try?
OOOH YES okay so, real quick, to answer the question of what i did: like 5-6 years ago i worked at a gym and had a free membership + a discount on personal training, so i did some one-on-one training sessions. if you're in a spot where you can afford that, go for it! i loved it! otherwise here are some tips:
for starting out, my first tip is just this: go do it. don't overthink it, and don't beat yourself up if you fall short of certain goals or miss a few gym sessions. even if you don't do everything, a little bit is awesome!
this might seem obvious, but don't work the same muscle groups twice in a row. you need to recover or you won't build any muscle and you might injure yourself
with that in mind, a lot of trainers like to split upper body workouts into a "push" day (bench press, shoulder press, tricep dips, basically anything working your front and your triceps) and a "pull" day (assisted pull-ups, lat pull down, rows, bicep curls, working your back and biceps) and i find this SUPER useful for keeping it all straight in my head, otherwise i'll be like "DID i work my biceps this week? hm"
with that in mind, i aim for 3 days a week: leg day, push day, and pull day. i don't always make all 3 but that's the goal
choosing weights: experiment a bit, but rule of thumb for each exercise is use a weight where your 10th rep is, like, kind of a struggle but not impossible. then do 2 or 3 more sets
going for a one rep max: this is powerlifting! this is the shit that gets me GOING and makes me feel SO STRONG, but please only only only do this if you have a spotter to check your form. right when you walk in the gym pick one lift (either squat, deadlift, or bench press) that you'll try this on, and do a normal set of 10 with whatever weight makes sense for you, then keep adding weight until you can only do 1 rep. for instance i'll squat the bar (45lbs) for 10, add some weight and go for 8, add more and go for 5, add more and go for 3, and then finally add more and go for 1. (ADD. WEIGHT. SLOWLY. like 10lb, maaaybe 20lb at a time.) this is a great way to build actual strength as opposed to aesthetic strength and feel super strong. then you go and do your other lifts for 3x10 like you normally would for the day
speaking of form, youtube is a treasure trove for looking up different exercises and making sure you're doing them right
avoiding soreness in the days after a workout: sometimes soreness is unavoidable (you're literally tearing your muscles so they'll build back stronger! of course it's gonna be a little sore!) but you can lessen it by ending your workout with some light cardio to keep your muscles warm, STRETCHING, taking a nice hot shower (keeps the blood flowing), and eating lots and lots of protein. swallow a cheesesteak whole in my honor. you won't regret it
lastly, if you want to build muscle in your arms and you don't stick to weightlifting, that's fine! my friend has gotten really into climbing over the last year, and her arms... good LORD, her arms! beautiful. incredible. basically my point is you have to enjoy what you're doing to stick with it, so for me that's powerlifting because it makes me feel accomplished and strong! for you it might also be lifting, or it could be climbing or kayaking or yoga or gymnastics (my latest tiktok crush is a pro gymnast whose arms are just..... chef's kiss. yeah i'm a little gay about it) but! the point is to try different things and stick to whatever you like the most. or mix and match! do what you want! have fun! get swole! be strong like bull! and please come brag to me about it when you do!

I'm not sure why crispy chickpeas aren't everywhere as like a top ADHD snack because they are:
Delicious (so you will actually seek them out/want to eat them)
Crispy (a good stim for texture people)
Easy to make (super hands off, they just roast for like 30 minutes while you do something else)
Healthy (it's literally just beans! Such protein!)
Versatile (you can switch up the seasonings if you get tired of one flavor; you can also put them on/in a bunch of different dishes)
Cheap AF & forgiving of your timeline (a can of chickpeas won't go bad in your pantry if you don't have the energy to make something with them this week)
So here's the resippy.
Cooked chickpeas (I usually use one can)
Olive oil
Salt
Paprika or curry powder or rosemary or your favorite spice (optional)
Steps:
Drain and rinse your chickpeas.
Dump them onto a towel or paper towel and rub them dry a bit.
Remove any loose skins. If you're feeling extra you can remove all the skins; this makes them slightly crispier. I do not find this to be worth it.
Put them on a baking sheet (lined with parchment paper if you want to save yourself some cleanup). Toss with a drizzle of olive oil, a generous pinch or two of salt, and your seasoning.
Roast in your oven. I usually do 400°F for about 25-30 minutes, but this is pretty forgiving and you can do 425 for 20 minutes or whatever you want to do
Taste a chickpea. It should have an audible crunch. If it doesn't, put it back in until it does
When done, taste for seasoning and add any additional salt or seasoning you want. Proceed to devour them.
These are best fresh, but I still like them later on (if I don't eat them all right away). Store in an airtight container for a couple days at room temp or a few days in the fridge.
Enjoy!!

culture tips for writing asian settings: naming taboo
naming taboo is a big thing in the chinese cultural sphere. essentially, there's an importance attached to personal names that to certain extent makes it taboo to say the name of/name others after important persons—and by "taboo" i mean if you violated this, you would be seriously audacious
a MAJOR example of this is the name of the emperor. historically, people whose names shared the same characters as the emperor's had to change their names when he came to power. (certain benevolent emperors might change their names to obscure characters to avoid a statewide headache.)
within the family, these taboos discourage naming children after their ancestors (i was always weirded out that bella swan could name her KID after her PARENTS). there are also elaborate naming patterns for relatives, so you don't have to call older relatives by name (like "aunt lin" or "uncle mingchi")—there are terms in chinese that mean "dad's older sister's husband" etc. this is perhaps an extreme example but i only learned my grandma's name a month ago, because no one i know will say it, and it would've been rude for me to ask.
Tumblr media
the taboo also applies to the names of famous and important people, like historical figures. this is quite different from, for instance, the catholic practice of naming children after saints.
if i had to explain the impetus behind the taboo, i would say names can be super personal in chinese culture. up until the early 20th century, chinese people could use several names in their lifetime, with different groups of people using different ones. naming someone after an important/respected person feels audacious, like you're prematurely trying to claim some of that importance

physical therapist reader that Simon reluctantly has an appointment with because his chronic pain is finally becoming just on the side of debilitating (it's a miracle he's upright and ambulatory). he only stops bitching about having to go to the appointment the second he walks into your office and lays eyes on you.

Once again, please stop reblogging from lesbian-archives. They have tags for rad feminism, "gynocentricism", "womb envy", antiprostitution, and separatists tags along with other similar terminology in terf and swerf communities on their blog. It's literally within the most used tags when you go to search. Plus they used to reblog from terfs often enough and use said tags until they decided to be a lil more cryptic I guess....

culture tips for writing asian settings: tea varieTEAs
atla's got major Tea Guy representation in iroh but let's be real, even non-tea guys are going to be drinking tea in an asian-inspired setting—you'd be served it instead of water most places. so, what kind of tea are you picking for them?
Tumblr media
as an east asian reader, it can take me out of the setting to see the characters drink something like chamomile (from europe/west asia) or... most herbal teas, to be honest. ngl it was weird to see iroh in the show, characterised as a huuuuuuge tea snob, drink stuff like jasmine (it's fine it's just basic, is all! imo!) or like.... a random flower he encounters in the wild.
when we're talking tea, real asian tea, we're talking about the leaf of the camellia sinensis plant. the huge variety we have of tea is actually from the different ways of processing that exact same leaf. popular varieties include:
green: the leaf goes through minimal processing, can have a bright and even leafy/grassy flavour (examples: gunpowder, longjing aka dragon well, matcha, genmaicha)
white: also undergoes minimal processing, with a lighter flavour than even green (examples: silver needle, shou mei)
oolong: the leaf is semi-oxidised, curled, and twisted—can be characterised by a tanniny flavour with a bright aftertaste. my personal favourite! (examples: da hong pao, tieguanyin, dong ding, alishan)
dark (black): note this isn't the same as black tea as we think of it in english. the leaf is fermented to produce an earthy tea with a flavour like petrichor (examples: pu'er)
all the teas listed in the "examples" are fairly credible teas that i think a real tea snob like iroh would drink.
Tumblr media
ok, but what about...
"black tea" as we know it in the west—assam and ceylon etc? this variety is actually called "red tea" in chinese. we don't drink it with milk but to be honest, i've just... never really heard of anyone drinking chinese red tea? which is why i've kept it off the list. (there's lapsang souchong, but i associate that with bri'ish people...) anyone who does drink it, let me know! on the other hand something like assam/ceylon, while extremely delicious and also asian, is a product of british colonialism and is consumed with milk. i think if you wanted to massage some of the traditions & have chai-drinking indian-influenced characters, though, that's cool!
do you actually not drink herbal tea? we do... but a lot of it is considered medicinal. we've got stuff like herbal "cooling tea" with ingredients like sour plum, mesona, or crysanthemum; tea that warms you up like ginseng or ginger. the whole concept of hot/cold in chinese medicine though... that deserves another culture post
camellia leaf murdered my family & i have a grudge against it; what else can my blorbos drink? there'a some good, tasty stuff made of wheat, barley, buckwheat, even soybean. wouldn't be egregious for the characters to drink that!
is milk sacriligeous? a real tea snob would think so, but a lot of asians nowadays are chill about milk in tea—usually in western-influenced red tea. hong kong, thailand, india, taiwan, and malaysia (among others) have their own cultures of milk tea, which has even become a democratic rallying point.
what do you think of iroh inventing bubble tea? my main issue with it is it's anachronistic! it was invented in taiwan in the late 20th century, but atla's set in the equivalent of the mid-19th century... you could also make arguments about whether iroh's too snobby about tea to invent it LOL
there's soooo much more i can say about all this so: keep your eyes peeled! i'll talk about medicine & tea ceremony in the near future <3

I was getting my hair done today and I couldn't stop thinking about ex!husband Bucky finding out you started dating other people after the divorce and how fun the sex would be if he got jealous 😵‍💫
Tumblr media
Because imagine how slowly he'd slide his dick into you, holding your chin in one hand to make sure you don't take your eyes off his. He presses into you so damn slowly, making sure you feel the way your body adjusts to allow him inside you. You're way more desperate than you even realised you would be and he knows it.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" He chuckles quietly, his cheeks flushed, stroking your chin gently with his thumb. "You've gone a little stupid already. Didn't he fuck you right? I bet he didn't. Could've told you he wasn't right for you." It'd been four days since you'd bumped into Bucky while out having dinner with someone else. In truth, the guy you went out with hadn't been all that interesting and you'd parted ways after a couple of drinks but Bucky didn't need to know that.
"He was pretty good actually." You tried to keep your voice steady, despite Bucky's distracting kisses to your neck. "You're gonna have a hard time living up to him."
Your ex-husband huffs out a laugh, his breath hot against your skin. "You've always been a terrible liar." The confidence that drips from his tone is enough to send shivers down your spine.
He's not wrong, it had always been a running joke between the two of you.
"Just looking at that guy, I could tell he wouldn't be able to work out where you like to be touched." His hand moves from your chin to trail ever so gently up the outside of your bare thigh. The featherlight touch leaves you wondering if you'd had goosebumps all evening or if they'd just risen in the last couple of minutes but then you're reminded that this man has taken the time to learn your body like no one else.
"He looked like he'd be selfish. I don't think he understands that the real pleasure in being with you is in getting to watch you come apart. There's nothing like it." He's slipping a little, lost in his admiration of your body. His fingertip trails lightly over your hardened nipple and you know he's remembering the way you gasp when he sucks on the sensitive bud.
"There's nothing like feeling you cum around me and knowing I caused it." He groans quietly, pressing as deep inside you as he can. "And hearing you whimpering my name." He's consumed by the feeling of you, indulging in the memory of the pleasure you've brought each other. "Hearing you begging me to stop when you're so wrung out, you just can't take any more."
He's unbearable in the very best way. He's hardly moved at all and you haven't even noticed because the way he touches you is so distracting. He knows your body and he gets off on showing you that.
His hand drifts back up your body to hold your chin once more, making sure you're watching as he drags his length from the heat of your sex, only to press back in, tearing a gasp from both of you. "You feel perfect. You were made for me." He groans, repeating the motion again and again, enjoying the way your body flutters around his.
