Dir en grey interview translation notes around The Devil In Me

Just some of the more interesting bits from the single's booklet and from PHY vol. 25.

Kyo

He was the one who came up with the title, and the title was determined before they even attached a song to it. The band basically decided to set a date for a new single ahead of time, not too long after 19990120's release, then they had just one song selection meeting (usually, they have three) to pick a song to work with toward becoming "The Devil In Me". After scheduling a release date, they had to pick a title before even knowing what song would be part of that release for production/logistical reasons.

Kyo wrote the lyrics of The Devil In Me based on his sense of dissociation from world events, how his own issues are not aligned with what the world cares about. He finds that people's lives are sometimes pre-determined the moment they are born. It's really a reflection on: "Why am I the way I am?"

The chorus has so many layers because Kyo wanted to illustrate that inner evil, or wickedness.

While re-recording Yokan, Kyo realized that he used to sing in short bouts, taking a breath more regularly, whereas he's evolved to sing as much as he can in a single, long breath now.

The small changes made to the lyrics of Cage just serve to help Kyo feel more immersed in that old poem, but if he'd wanted to change the lyrics to represent his current mindset, clearly he would have composed a completely new, different song.

Kyo commented in PHY vol. 25 that if the producers wanted a band that sells a lot, they would have had to replace him with someone who is taller, has a nice face and that composes songs that appeal to a wider audience. But around their debut, Kyo had to bend to some of the producers' demands because he had to rely on their knowledge of what would make the band successful. He wanted to make a very dark band, but he had to accept to make songs like Yokan.

"It wouldn't be appropriate to sing about corpses and internal organs to a melodious song such as Yokan (lol)."

Kyo feels like Dir en grey is the toughest band for him to be a part of, because the band's shows are especially mentally difficult.

Kaoru

The music of The Devil In Me was Kaoru's idea.

Kaoru agrees that the song kind of ends in a way that the band could have, in the past, followed up on with a second section of the song, but they felt like ending it in a more simple way now, which still represents the band's current state.

Die

The band had a discussion in a dressing room during Tour23 Phalaris Final –The scent of a peaceful death- and that's where they came to an understanding of where they wanted to take the band next. Kyo brought them ideas on what he felt that the next single song should sound like, but in the end, at the selection meeting, the majority of the band chose a completely different song than the other of the 5 that Kyo preferred. He's fine with letting the majority win.

Die started working out in 2018 to make sure to stay in shape for stage performances, and I think that he mentioned that it's important for him to appear young and healthy so that the fans who follow the band also don't feel old.

For Die, he was in part less active on stage during the Dum Spiro Spero era because the songs were dark and complex, so he had to focus more. Because of that, he couldn't enjoy the actual shows as much.

Toshiya

Toshiya mentioned that doing commemorative tours and shows is really just fan service.

Toshiya described Dir en grey as a group of five dictators. Their enemies and friends/allies are all inside that group, and the past 25(+) years have been a continuation of challenges to bring the band forward despite this type of chemical reaction between five egos.

Apparently the band never has casual "weird" conversations where they chat about their interests of the moment, but they quietly observe the others without interacting, like by observing what kind of clothes they wear or are into.

Shinya

Contrary to the band's habit, the vocals did not even exist yet when Shinya had to compose and record his drumming for The Devil In Me. When the vocals were eventually recorded, they kind of matched what Shinya had expected.

However, overall, a couple of members of the band feel like The Devil In Me might be a song that people react to with: "I don't get it", rather that just liking or disliking it.

Shinya described The Devil In Me as mysterious, inexplicable.

He started taking some lessons from Buck-Tick's "Anii" (Toll Yagami) to learn a new drumming method. In the past, at the very beginning of his career, Shinya used to wear lead weights at his ankles to hit the pedal heavier and develop muscles, but Yoshiki and other seniors told him how to actually play and he quickly got rid of the weight belts.

“five or s—” heeseung’s mouth fell agape, “i hope you got to eat and drink water.”

“i did, don’t worry,” you laughed off his comment, recalling how frantic your friends and family were to ensure you were doing just that, “and…i have a little surprise for you.”

heeseung tilted his head in curiosity, gaze fixed on you as you joined him on the sofa. “and what would that be?”

“do you remember that tradition i told you about? the one that—”

“you wrote my name in there?” a toothy smile started to form on heeseung’s lips as he gently pulled your right hand toward his face.

“just your first name,” you smiled, combing the hair that had fallen into heeseung’s face in his excitement back with your free hand. he remained focused on your hand as he used his pointer finger to follow a spiral from the center of your palm outward.

“this will be so easy,”

“if you think it’s so easy, maybe we should add some stakes,” you suggested. you tried to sound like you had just come up with this idea, but your delivery revealed that you had thought about it much beforehand. he looked up with a cocked eyebrow, always in the mood for a challenge. “if you don’t find your name in the next three minutes, i win — in which case, i get to write my name on you too. in the same spot.”

“okay, deal,” he said softly, smiling to himself as he set a timer before looking back down at your mehndi. your heart swelled with affection as he moved his touch along your forearm to check there, grazing each square inch with his soft fingers. he met your eyes momentarily, shaking his head as if to say “not on this one.”

picking up your left hand, he repeated the process, starting from the center of your palm and working outward. he paused briefly midway through tracing your fingers but continued, biting his bottom lip to conceal a grin.

“you have a terrible poker face, jaanu,” he pretended not to hear you, so you wiggled your fingers to get his attention. “i know you found it.”

“you’re so sentimental that i knew exactly where it was going to be,” heeseung admitted, curling your left index and middle fingers forward to reveal, among the scallops of the design, ‘HEESEUNG’ written along the length of your ring finger. “but i knew you wanted to write your name on my hand.”

“oh, who’s the sentimental one now, hm?” you rolled your eyes, giving a playful push to his shoulder.

heeseung reached behind himself to reveal a mehndi cone, a proud smirk on his face, “might be me,” he handed you the cone and put his left hand in yours.

“it’s definitely you,” you leaned forward, pressing a small kiss onto the corner of his grin.

What kind of music do you listen to? And got any recommendations? Anything obscure or not talked about enough in your opinion?

I have pretty basic ass music taste, tbh!! Like don’t be mistaken lol. With Chinese music, I like folk and folk rock for the most part LOL. Songs my dad used to play on loop on long drives 😆. I guess some of those might be considered obscure to non Chinese people, assuming they probably get into contemporary Chinese music first (but I'm sure my Chinese/diaspora followers will know these... maybe?)

Basically I inherited my Dad's music taste

Dao Lang is also a favorite I got from my dad lol. For younger folk/rock singers, I really like 赵雷/Zhao Lei and 刘森/Liu Sen (华北浪革).

Li Ronghao is another younger favorite artist of mine.

I would also say that any longer songs that I've translated (#music tag) is one that I like also.

I don't think I listen to anything too obscure non-Chinese wise. I listen to a lot of like Motown, dad rock, 60s/70s folk rock, basically. I dont listen to the radio or streaming platforms, so there’s only so many ways I can find new music. I like 90s/early 2000s pop and R&B lol. 90s kpop also. One of the CDs my dad used to play on loop was Celine Dion's album "Let's Talk About Love", so I have every track in that album imprinted permanently in my brain. Uhh… I like Marc Anthony’s earlier stuff also, like Contra la Corriente, basically.

Anna Leone is a newer indie artist I like.

JMSN has a couple songs I like.

Vicky Tafoya is also a newer artist I found recently.

And then I guess I'll leave off with the two songs I've probably been listening to the most recently:

...and Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (Jammin') (whoops, went past the video link limit). Charles Bradley is also a singer I discovered recently (too late, tho, RIP).

Also Yoon Jongshin, Wheesung, and Lim Chungjang are the kind of Korean singers I listen to (off the top of my head). Tears at the End of the Sky by Junyfore is one of my favorite songs. I like Korean rock as well (blanking on a bunch of songs names right now, though—I'd have to check my phone because it's not in my current library, and that's basically what I listened to for a while after I stopped listening to kpop so much.

"I miss you when you're not here," you murmur to the holorecorder, storing a message away to send your love. "anyways I hope you're okay and safe and I love you so much."

You end the recording and set the comm on your nightstand with a sigh. It's been weeks since Fives left on a mission and you haven't been able to properly have a comm call due to kriffing time differences.

You begin to drift off to sleep dreaming about him. About him coming home, wrapping his arms around you, kissing your neck, and telling you how much he missed you too.

When you wake up the next morning, the first thing you notice is the presence of arms secured around your waist. The next is the telltale feeling of a goateed chin tucked into your shoulder. You smile, reaching up to squeeze Fives' hand.

He breathes in deeply, kissing your shoulder, and exhales with a satisfied hum.

"Hi," you coo, wiggling around in his hold to face him. He looks at you with all the love and adoration in the galaxy.

"Hey mesh'la," he greets, kissing the tip of your nose. You tilt your head up to catch his lips. He hums into the kiss and pulls you closer.

"Well g'mornin," he drawls softly against your lips. You smile and cuddle closer.

"Wasn't expecting you home."

He laughs, and you nearly cry because you missed that sound so much.

"Sorry, I'll just see myself out." he jokes.

You make an indignant noise and all but wrap yourself around him. "You're not going anywhere until Rex breaks in and drags you out of my arms."

"And legs." He adds, acknowledging the fact that all four of your limbs were tangled with his.

You laugh a little. "Yeah."

"Kark, I missed you." He breathes out.

You lean against his chest. "I missed you more."

"Nuh-uh." He counters, making you snort.

"Yuh-huh."

"Mesh'la, I played your recordings at least fifty times while staring at a holopic of you, just so I could pretend you were there with me."

"Yeah, well I dreamt about you every night."

A smirk crosses his face and he raises an eyebrow. "Oh? what kind of dreams?"

You smack him in the shoulder. "Dreams. Just, you being there. It's too quiet here when you're gone."

He dips his head with an earnest smile.

"I promise that when this war is over I'm gonna marry you and give you the life you deserve. I'll be right by your side every day."

If he keeps this up you might actually start crying.

"I can't wait," you smile. "I love you so much."'

He kisses your forehead. "I Love you more."

Oh, I have complicated feelings about Nightbringer.

(I’ll use a Read More link here because of vague OG S4 discussion.)

I didn’t whale in OG but I was much more willing to spend extra money chasing cards I wanted. I was really motivated to catch up on all the story content too since I didn’t start playing until the later part of the pandemic. I know S3 and S4 aren’t the greatest bits of story-telling ever written but I had hopes for more Celestial Realm content (a visit and maybe Michael appearance) in S5 based on where Simeon’s storyline was heading.

(I usually picture MC traveling to the CR to see Michael in S5, and maybe another visit of new angels to the Devildom in S6 once tensions are resolved.)

Overall I really liked getting involved with the fandom and I started posting fanfics here. I was so happy with my curated little card collection of favs — Lucifer was my original favourite, followed by Simeon, Barbatos, Solomon and Asmo — and exploring the game with my writing.

And then Nightbringer was announced.

After I spent probably too much money collecting all the HDD cards I wanted not long before that.

And the cards weren’t going to be transferable to the new game! ISN’T THAT FUN?! (Solmare logic, probably.)

I mean, I get it. It’s the nature of gacha games and the motivation is to grow the player base and revenue potential.

Sure, whatever.

And some parts of Nightbringer are fine, while other parts leave me desperately wanting more. Detailed lore that ties into the OG game and characters I care about, more in-depth characterization. Another slow burn love interest would be nice too since NB completely changed the direction of Barb’s development compared to OG S4 (side-eyes Mephisto and Raphael as new potentials). Also, as time goes on, I find myself not really caring who Nightbringer is. Does it even matter anymore? Like…whatever, you do you, buddy. lol

Oh, and more ROMANCE? Hello??? The babysitter role and goofy family dynamics are satisfying to a point but then it gets stale. Some of the Devilgrams are boring too, and don’t get me started on the EVENTS. I enjoyed the vampire one last year that sparked a random writing frenzy of vampire AU fics, but so many of the events fall flat for me. Anyone else just use S or A Rank skips to breeze past the story bits because 90% of it is boring as hell? Yeah, same.

It sounds like a lot of complaints, but there’s still more about the game I love or I wouldn’t be here: my favs, most of the artwork, the music! The new Dateables song is so goofy - what are those lyrics? - but they didn’t autotune Simeon to death and he sounds so much better than he did in Question Love (the only song whose remix I like better than the original).

I love the people I’ve met in this fandom and being able to share story ideas and headcanons. It’s so exciting when new lessons and cards are announced because the player base gets invigorated again (even if things fall a little flat upon arrival). I’ve splurged on some merch (official and fan-made) and I love being self-indulgent and commissioning artwork of my favs and MC together.

Oh, and I love my OCs. 😚 @ them all.

Bakugou who isn’t above begging you for kisses. Has no qualms about pinching your cheeks in between his fingers, getting all close in your face while he pouts his lips at you.

“Where’s my fuckin’ kiss?” Says it like he’s so offended that you didn’t immediately cover him in kisses after he’s come in from work. Followed you all around the house while you chattered on and on about your day, only taking a breath to ask how his was, finding yourself cornered when you turn around. He’s all big and hulking, would be a terrifying sight to anyone who didn’t know that he was just a stupid clingy teddy bear.

“Gimme my damn kiss, woman,” he’ll bite at you when you’re too busy rattling off about how much you’ve missed him when he finally comes home after a long mission away. Grips your jaw between meaty fingers as he smashes him mouth against your own, tears mingling between your lips to make the kiss salty, but he swears he has missed your taste more than anything in the world.

“Can I please get my kiss?” He asks when he’s sleepy, dead tired and up far too late for his own liking. You’re up in bed beside him, tapping away at your phone, keeping him up bc you’re not cuddling against him. He paws at you, frowning, until you lean down and cup his cheek in your hand as you kiss him so softly, so sweet and gentle, that he can’t help but hum and sink lower into the cushions. He still grumbles when you pull away, but it’s enough to suffice tonight.

“I don’t care about your stupid morning breath, just kiss me already.” He’ll complain when he’s leaving for work in the morning, sitting on the edge of the bed where you sleep. He looks down at you with a soft smile, eyes gushing with love as he watches you frown and twist and yawn yourself awake. He won’t leave until you peck at his mouth once, twice, so many times that you have to push him away with a reminder that he has to go now lest he be late. He kisses your forehead before he leaves, and wishes you a good day.

“I’m alive now, ain’t I? Kiss me just to make sure I’m really here.” He tells you quietly from where he lays bandaged and bruised on his hospital bed, his good fingers weakly gripping your own as he watches the tears drip from your chin. His mouth is like a welcome home, his lips chapped and dry from dehydration, but he’s alive and this kiss he’s asked you for is enough proof of that.

Bakugou loves your kisses, and will never be above begging for them. They’re the only thing that keeps him grounded to this world, and for that, he’s forever thankful.

Ah, thank you anon! I'm not particularly surprised unfortunately, not the first time it's happened with that comic — sadly I don't think there's much I can do about it, especially since I don't have a tiktok myself. But thank you for letting me know! I do like to know whenever that happens, even if I can't do anything to get the videos taken down. At the very least, it's a reminder that I should really start putting some sort of signature on my comics 😅

...Also, in this particular case the video you linked actually made me laugh when I looked at it, because!! Quick storytime: the last time someone messaged me to let me know that a tiktoker had reposted the horrors comic, I went and looked at it and noticed that the reposter had put two of the comic pages in the wrong order. Somehow NO ONE in the comments had mentioned the fact that the order of events didn't flow right, it was hilarious.

Why is this relevant? Well, because this tiktok you've linked me to has the SAME EXACT MISTAKE, which indicates to me that this new person didn't even steal it from me directly, they stole it from the OTHER REPOSTER and also didn't notice the mistake in page order! The reposters are cannibalizing each other! I am both very entertained and utterly baffled by the lack of effort! They're not even stealing things well!

Anyway, all this to say: I have managed to find the humor in this kind of situation, but I still do not appreciate people reposting my stuff, especially without credit. And general PSA that if you see my comics/artwork anywhere that is not here on my tumblr, or on my AO3 account forest_raccoon, that is not posted by me, and it has been done without my permission.

fire and the thud came on my spotify shuffle while me and my sister were listening to music this afternoon, and at the end of it she turns to me and goes “who was that? the lyrics sound like the kind of thing you’d write” and honestly i think it’s one of my favourite unintentional compliments i’ve ever received

#in this drawing i wanted to use the song ‘Square’ by Mitski #personally i feel like this song is about being in love and trying far too hard to be the perfect lover that you are incapable of being #to me it’s like trying to see where you fit in that person’s life and not knowing where you belong in it #but then you’re still longing for that feeling of belonging there with them #so you self-destructively go to great lengths to ‘earn’ your place with them #i feel that the self-destructive behavior of trying to be that perfect lover just to ‘earn’ their love #is exactly the ‘burning’ that Mitski describes #it hurts trying to fit in but not quite succeeding again and again and again... #this is something that i think i relate to #trying far too hard to belong with someone who is 'only sometimes madly in love with me' #and says that i 'wouldn't be their first choice' #-that person kept switching between wanting me as a friend and a lover and now i am neither #and yet therein lies the problem: if i cared less and gave less effort #perhaps we could’ve worked things out without me trying too hard to “earn” their love #but why would i ever try to care less? #the situation was doomed from the start and i lost a friend in the process #i made this illustration to reflect that the best i could. I think the square motif was particularly obvious— #the canvas itself is a square and the illustration itself has to fit in a square box #everything else i drew would have to fit within this box to maintain the “order” #the colors are all some type of blue with not too much contrast except for the text eyes and teardrop on the figure #i wanted to keep contrast low within this illustration— everything should be “fitting in" after all #for the figure itself i wanted it to be clear that the figure is being forced into that square #its body’s being forced into that half of the box and even then its head is forced downwards #it’s clearly not fitting comfortably but it’s sure trying its hardest to #also also also!!! i wanted to do more angular shapes with this drawing because square and whatever lol :P #i don’t think i was particularly obvious in communicating that in the drawing though #but anyways i just wanted to draw to help process something that happened to me a while back :0 #i still think i love that person but just like how i don’t have a place in their life #i don’t think they have a place in mine and i think i’m starting to make peace with that :D #jaevyart

Another artist I'm unfamiliar with :') But after reading her wikipedia and this Billboard article, I decided to watch her 中国好声音 audition and then listen to a song from her first album 勇敢额度 (Courage) and then another song from her latest album 同心向未来 (United Toward the Future). There's a lot of songs to choose from with her (I saw a lot of OSTs on her baidu page, but I decided to stick with her albums), so sorry if I didn't pick the best ones!

I don't have as much to saw about her because I'm not a music expert by any means, but I'll link the videos I watched so others can discover her, too!

I feel like she has a nicely expressive face when she sings, and my first impression was that she has a very clean voice, great for pop ballads. Maybe it wasn't the best song choice for the audition, though (no big high point to get the chairs turning). I did get to around 3:05 and went like "UH... no turns? Were they really late into auditions or something?" But then I remembered she becomes a big pop star and calmed down lol.

The song from her first album that I chose to listen to was the one that her album is named after:

I will say, I think her voice is very pretty and I think if you like soft ballads, she's very good. I don't think it's really my cup of tea in terms of music genre, but I did find the instrumental interesting, especially the little moment at 1:50. The mix of strings and that sort of snap-pop electronic vibe is pretty smoothe. Add in the lyrics about dreams and it reminds me of something that feel reminiscent of swinging around in a office chair, but I can't really put my finger on it.

The third song I listen to was 同心向未来 from her newest album of the same name. As far as I can tell, this is the official video, published through China Youth Daily.

This kind of song is admittedly more my style in terms of softer ballads, so I really enjoyed this. Her voice is beautiful of course and I really like the chorus. It's just that perfect bit of sappy for me.

I'll probably go on and check out some of her OSTs on my own because the last song makes those projects seem promising. She has a good sound for it!

i have to say, I'm happily taylor-neutral but I do think the hate, in general, is over the top. Like it's just pop music, some people are going to like it and some aren't and I don't understand why it matters that much. Like I saw a rather annoying post saying (I guess as a joke, not that funny to me though) that actual tortured poets stick their heads in ovens and like 1. that's... again, not funny 2. taylro is a woman at the end of the day she has a god-given right to feel connected to sylvia plath just like the rest of us. 3. anyone can be a tortured poet you just have to feel tortured and write poetry. it doesn't have to be good. a 13 year old writing emo poetry in her suburban bedroom can be a tortured poet I don't think it's that big of a deal and that's probably who the album was aimed at. 4. why would you say that anyway, it's stupid

i do think its kinda funny when i see someone in the year of our lord 2024 talk about vocal synth music like its all gone downhill since like 2010 because like dont get me wrong i love a good niconicodouga-ass 2008 ass vocaloid joint BUT also like. the past couple years have had the most fascinatingly creative and expressive uses of vocal synthesizers ive ever heard in my life DJFSKHJDFS dont write it all off just yet!!

I think the simplest way to answer this is with one of Olivia’s own lyrics from pretty isn’t pretty when she sings “none of it matters and none of it ends” because. That is kind of her whole ethos about how life works. She believes that! And so her work, to me, is profoundly cynical and self-absorbed because it can’t point to anything bigger (none of it matters) so it revolves purely around her own feelings. It won’t ever situate itself in a wider picture. And I love whining in a song tbh. I love when an artist captures those uglier emotions —the discontent, the restlessness, the irritation, the blandness and staleness of it all and the railing against it—because those are all part of the human experience. I am continually shocked—it is shoCKING—by how many negative emotions I can and do experience over and over again. But it is thankfully against the backdrop of reality. My bad moods are something that can be so unpleasant to feel and so ugly to witness—I wrestle with how ugly and small my suffering is—but there is a way in which, all discourse about the validity of any and all of my feelings accounted for, those aren’t real. Just symptoms of my suffering and sometimes my convalescence (lol, love a symptom of convalescence) but reality is still always so much realer. It’s always ready to break in a million times a day; the beauty and sturdiness of reality, the texture of existence, as Flannery O’Connor once said, is always there and with enough time (and with patience and help and love) I can get back to contact with it. Not just the state of my own mind full of bitterness and worry and pain, endlessly stewing in its own unhappiness.

I am not good at that, it takes a lot to get me there. But I guess my point is—to circle back—Olivia’s music doesn’t try and doesn’t want to. Its scope is so narrow, every song no matter how pleasing at first eventually sours (lololololol) because it’s JUST rooted in her own experience, generally her own suffering. And there’s no sharpness or cleverness in the world (she can be both sharp and clever!) that can hide that lack of range. So you hear a song once—for me, it was brutal—-and you’re like YEAH. I recognize this kind of whininess because I’ve felt it before. There is something true to it! But the more she writes the more you watch her do it over and over again (sonically, too, she loves to speak-talk and tbh they’re just sub-par remixes of brutal) the more you start to be like “oh, is that it? We’re not going anywhere with this? There’s no turn or catharsis or bridge or anything that lifts us out of this even for a second?” and it’s just —blegh.

And the thing is there doesn’t even have to be, like, some triumphant girlboss victory where she feels better. I’m not saying her songs are bad because they’re sad and depressing. It’s that they establish no outside contact with reality. They are, for all her clever little film-noir references or whatever, only ever self-referential. And that gets old so fast no matter who is talking.

#yes of course I contrast her with Taylor #Taylor can be beautifully petty and restless and sad and insecure and her songs are never just about her #They are always situated in a broader picture of reality. They go down to the roots of things. Of humanity and love and the human condition #and it’s just. It’s so much bigger. It is not stifling #and that’s the staying power and that’s the inherent hopefulness she has and that’s her desire to know the truth and speak the truth #Even when she’s getting it wrong it’s all still there #anyway it’s funny because Taylor gets accused of what Olivia actually is doing so much more than Olivia #people love to pretend that Taylor is a wallower and self-indulgent #and yes there’s a very human humanity to the expression of her emotions. There IS brattiness there is anger #but the core is so good that those things become what they are —only the endearing and funny trappings of her expression #never the heart #it’s why Taylor wears so well and also why sometimes she is jarring on first listen. You can just hear the dissonance (for me too) #But it’s like that one tweet said. Doesn’t matter if you like a taylor song on first listen. You WILL eventually #and it’s so true. And that’s the quality drawing you in #Olivia (and much of gen z tbh) is kind of the opposite: the humanity is in the trappings #She’s fairly easy to listen to and like ….. at first #the humanity and cleverness and beauty such as they are are on the surface #there’s a deceptive ease and an openness that doesn’t actually lead you anywhere #It leaves you empty because it’s just all kind of built on the fumes of a bad mood tbh #turning off reblogs lol #Anyway thank you for asking and giving me this opportunity to speak #all opinions are mine and that’s what they are.
