hi, i was wondering if you had read "the spirit bares its teeth" by andrew joseph white? i just read it and it seemed like it might be something youd be interested in. YA horror set in victorian england with a transmasc autistic protagonist

i haven't, but i've read a third of his other book, Hell Followed With Us! i think if i had picked it up ten years ago i would've devoured it in one day and had the book zoomies about it, but currently i'm just feeling a bit like the wrong demographic. i'm hoping to finish it Someday, when the stars align........ the other book sounds interesting from its summary as well, so who knows what the future has in store for me!

EDIT: wait does that book have a lot of eye trauma stuff? the cover + description mentions some stuff and it's a thing i prefer to avoid when i can :')

the set up of this fic is tim manipulating the bats into following a plan he misrepresented and then purposefully going dark, although the majority of the fic deals with the interpersonal fallout of tim's actions (complete)

jason takes tim in because jack drake's a piece of shit and ends up doing his own growing in the process. not sure how to explain why i'm including this without spoiling it, but there is a Big Moment later in the fic that to me is equivalent to tim purposely cutting his comms off to deal with a situation himself (wip)

Call to a Lonely Earth by Drag0nst0rm

in the midst of brucequest, tim ends up on an earth where there are no longer any children and bruce has lost both his sons. i'm mostly including this one because i like it a lot, but—mild spoiler—tim does make a call explaining what he presents as a hopeless situation that he can't be saved from and then hangs up! (first fic is complete but sequel isn't)

also, while it doesn't quite have the same emotional force of what i was looking for, detective comics (1940) #698-99 is where i originally got the idea from and it does feature protective dick and alvin draper!

saw you post a lot of brokeback mountain content so i want to know if you have a list of your favorite brokeback mountain fanfic :)

I do post a lot abt Brokeback Mountain, but I've never actually sat down and made a formal, ranked list of all the Brokeback fics I love?? I have a collection on ao3 called "My Favorite Fanfics" which is where I put fics that I like beyond a simple bookmark, and there are more BBM fics in there than any other fandom I've read for haha. Unfortunately, this list isn't actually comprehensive as there are many that were either exclusively posted to the old BBM LiveJournal groups, or they were posted to LJ then later deleted and are now word documents that get passed around by email.

If I were to rank my fave BBM fics in a top 10 list, it'd look like this:

10. Once Upon a Time by rhye

A happy-ending ranch AU composed of short chapters based on fairy tale themes. As in fairy tales, some plot elements may be far-fetched, the angst runs deep, there is fluff, and they all lived happily ever after.

9. Life Ain't Easy by Creed Cascade (creedcascade)

Jack convinces Ennis to come work on the Twist Ranch after they leave Brokeback Mountain, but life ain’t easy.

8. Come Hell or High Water by Just_K

Ennis Del Mar makes the decision to leave his simple life behind and follow the brazen Jack Twist across the state of Wyoming. Unfortunately I can't link this one as it lives in a word doc, getting passed around from email to email after 271horses purged his LJ acc. It's fantastic, tho! A lot of users on the old Brokeback forums hold it in high regards, as you'll see lots of posts mentioning the great BBM Earl/Rich prequel fic and how good it is.

2. Somebody, Somewhere by mediumorange

If you can't fix it, you've got to stand it. Slowly but surely, Ennis finds a way to stand it.

1. Widower for One Year by 271horses

This story concentrates on what would have become of Ennis after he was left alone trying to deal with the finality of his loss in that beaten up old trailer, still mired in his miserable life.

This one is another one of those that gets passed around through email and I consider it one of the greatest tragedies of the fandom bc it is, no joke, the BEST fic I have ever read in my god damned life, but it was never finished. 271horses purged his LJ acc before finishing it. I actually stopped reading once I got close to the end bc I don't want to deal with the fact that it will never be completed, so for me to confidently call it the best fic ever without actually having finished it says a lot.

it’s basically the scarf + ice pack combo but alllll over your head with consistent cooling and pressure

i have had migraines for years and i’d been known to fall asleep with an ice pack pressed against my forehead and facedown onto my fist for the pressure. this does that. it’s like memory foam/gel esc inside so it stays cool (could also put it in the fridge but it almost gets a bit too cold for me) and it’s t i g h t around your head. it looks goofy as hell but as we know (the migraine havers of the world) we dgaf as long as it helps. and i’d say it does! if anything it helps keep the pressure on it so i can fall asleep. and if it’s a more mild one - the cap + some Advil Migraine (hella rec too) can sometimes knock it out. anyways - i’m a huge supporter of the migraine cap. PLUS it’s on amazon for not that expensive.

currently wearing it as we speak and it felt fitting that i hc one of the kids to get it for steve as a joke (cause goofy af) and he ends up wearing it unironically and LOVING IT.

I remember reading one of your asks on how you would like to do Batman and Wonder Woman's rouges right if you DID re-imagine them, so here are some recommendations.

For the Batman stuff, your best shots are looking at B:TAS/TNBA (A lot of the rouges were done wonderful there), The Arkham Games (Riddler, Bane, Catwoman, Scarecrow, and Penguin, but Joker is there too), and The Batman 2022 (Once again Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin, and if we want to get into it Gotham's corruption). The Non-B:TAS pieces of media are dark, but they're not edgy dark thankfully so you can pull some pieces from there for Inso.

Now for getting Wonder Woman's rouges right, the best recommendations I have is just reading up on greek mythology and picking up some of the old school, pre-52 Wonder Woman comics to see what elements of from those characters you can pick apart and remix into something faithful yet modern. I mean its what the B:TAS crew did, and one of the reasons why the show is still iconic.

You don't have to follow this advice, but just be aware that you have years of media to help you.

I've watched all of those Bat media already! I'm a big DCAU fan (finally finished re-watching Justice League Unlimited wahoo), I followed the Arkham games closely in college (where I really became a Bat-fan), and I re-watched The Batman 2022 recently! It's a delight. I tee-hee-d the whole time, what a treat. These adaptations just do such a good job that I don't know what else to add! Like what's there for me to change up? At most Scarecrow is definitely underdone in BTAS and the Arkham Games, so there's creatively wiggle room to reimagine him. But the others? Dunno yet until I look into them more.

Yeah that's honestly exactly my struggle with Wonder Woman, haha. You basically need a lot of homework before tackling adapting her (at least the way I do it)- not only does she have a ton of comics and re-imaginings, but Greek mythology on top of that? Woof I have not attended Wonder Woman university yet where I'd have to major in mythology and history, and minor in "what did this male writer do wrong this time" haha.

I'm so intimately familiar with Martian Manhunter's stories at this point (even without having read all of them, pre-Crisis and many Justice League comics are holes in my knowledge, still-) that I can spot character arc pitfalls and the weaknesses of an adaptation immediately. I know all the plots writers re-cycle with him at this point- so I know where to innovate and where I can pull a through line from. I don't know Diana well enough to do that yet.

So I was reading this cool Mergwenthur fic (https://archiveofourown.org/series/3591679), where the 3 of them have a baby girl & they call her YGRAINE 🥹, which just REEKS of Arthur’s sappyness over his own dead mother.

And I would just like to say that, yes, Arthur would totally name his daughter after his mother but if he had had a son, Arthur Pendragon would never EVER call his baby boy Uther after his shitty shitty father. Just so you know. He would not fucking do that.

Also I’d imagine Gwen and/or AT LEAST Merlin (hello??!?) to have several objections against that decision.
