#thank you to my local library for having dvds

Did anybody ask for fic based on Escape Room (2019) and its sequel movie? Maybe not, but I have new characters to play with and want to share. Enjoy a snippet from something in progress.
Collapsing next to Ben, Zoey tried to fight the poisoned air in her lungs. She felt herself slipping away, all the panic she tried to muster faded into a frustrating nothingness.
Just as everything went black, Zoey jolted awake. Her chest heaved as she tried to reorient herself in the new room. Except it was her room, in her apartment, not a Minos trap.
“Zoey?” A sleep-heavy voice asked, “you alright?”
A warm hand pressed against her back, grounding her in the assurance that this was not some Minos trick. Zoey stayed quiet for a moment, focusing on the comforting warmth at her back before turning to face Ben.
“Just a bad dream.”

Short love story. When I have more time, I want to do more of these and collect them in a small book.
I got the idea for this story when writing down what books and dvds I was checking out from the library at the time. I thought, "what if someone found this? What would they be able to tell about me based on my rentals." I was checking out a lot of teen flicks from the 2000s and cookbooks. To a stranger that probably would have made me seem very earthly (laughs).
The nature of privacy in the internet age is generally an invasive topic. But what if the nature of the compromise was charming? I want you to decide how you feel about it. If you If you take nothing else from this comic, take this recommendation: use your local library!
Thank you,
-Dom

Last night I added an ex-Blockbuster Scott Pilgrim vs. the World DVD to my collection of home video oddities. (The standard DVD is on the right for comparison.) These rental versions were produced for quite a few movies. Fox started the practice in 2009 in response to slumping home video sales and Warner Bros. kept it up until at least 2018 (here's a Ready Player One rental). Their sole purpose was to nudge consumers towards buying their own copies, because they do not have bonus features. The back cover of this DVD is even edited to remove any mention of them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rather than sell these nerfed discs to rental businesses and libraries at a discounted rate, Fox (and presumably the other studios that adopted the practice) forbade wholesellers from offering the superior retail versions to rental accounts. Thanks to the right of first sale, those rental accounts could just turn around and buy the retail versions from, say, Walmart, but that seems to have been impractical to do at the scale required to completely circumvent rental versions.
Of course, nobody liked this except the bean-counters; here's another 2009 article complaining about it. Hilariously, the focus of their ire was Terminator Salvation rental Blu-rays leaving out the director's cut where Moon Bloodgood is topless for a few seconds. God, what a dark time for our culture.
What's really mean is that Universal didn't bother creating a new menu for the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World rental. So you can still see all the bonus features on the retail release listed out; the disc just hits you with this message when you try to play any of them:
Tumblr media
I don't know why rental DVDs and Blu-rays are no longer produced. Maybe rental sales sank low enough that it wasn't worth the trouble. Today, video rental stores are largely extinct—but you can still loan movies from your local library for free, and I can't recommend it enough. Check if they have the real Terminator Salvation on Blu-ray for me, will ya?

People's Sexiest Man Alive would never steer me wrong!
Idly browsing through DVDs at the library, I saw "Thanksgiving" (apparently released last fall and which, like most movies these days, I've never heard of), whose cover gave off immediate Slasher (the series) vibes so I turned it over to read the back.
Whereupon I saw Patrick Dempsey in a sheriff's uniform and IMMEDIATELY said "sold" and put it in my checkout bag without even reading the summary. This is the level of auto-watch we're at here.
Spoilers for the ending, and also Scream 3 I guess, below the cut:
and listen, I knew it was too much to hope that I would get away with a second horror movie in which he is the kindly local law enforcement who neither dies nor kills, but also I didn't! Especially when he immediately became the reassuring and comforting presence to a teenage girl whose entire remaining family kinda sucks. Not even the godawful accent* stopped me, and believe me, that was A Trial.
[*which, I am horrified to learn while googling to confirm what to call it, is real?? "he was instructed to lose the accent in order to broaden his acting opportunities" well I'm sorry to say, whoever told him that was entirely correct. Just like he had to ditch his original nose. I have never apologized for being shallow as hell in my screen preferences.]
Other thoughts:
+ MC's love interests both kinda suck, but as far as the friend group, I'll be damned if I didn't immediately find them all distinctive and interesting within about ten minutes of knowing them. Goosebumps 2023 aside, I have watched so many exhaustingly bland teens in films and TV shows that I assumed my ability to enjoy an actor under about 25 was gone forever, but no! Look! Here they are, being Interesting! ESPECIALLY the lead...Nell Verlaque? Show me MORE, IMMEDIATELY.
[side detour #2: oh my god, she was also in Big Shots?? TUNA are you KIDDING ME this might finally drive me to the seas, the high ones specifically]
+ In other news, the violence and gore made me sick to my stomach (also like Slasher!), and after about fifteen minutes I simply could not watch most of the terrible scenes. Or at least, I didn't want to, but sometimes I didn't turn away fast enough and they got me. I will be having nightmares, thanks!!!
+ Fortunately I will simply soothe them away with the correct AU in which someone else is the killer because of reasons, and after her remaining family members are brutally butchered, Quasi-Uncle Patrick Dempsey simply steps up to offer her a home and several years' worth of trauma therapy. 🤗

This is probably going to sound very wierd so if you could just bear with me:
I follow moosegbt and I saw that in your ask to them you use to be a "video tape archivist"?
My mom was been wanting to put her marriage video that's on a vhs on either a DVD or digitize it. In your opinion, where are some places I should look to for getting that done? None of my family, including me, are very tech savvy, so it might be better if it were done by a professional.
Thank you!
Unfortunately I can't recommend any services as I have not used them, but you might check if any local libraries offer the equipment you need - and they'll probably be able to show you how to use it too. For example, San Diego PL has a Digital Memory Lab.
If you want to try it at home, all you need is a VCR, a computer, and a video capture card (this is the part that converts the analog video from the VCR to a digital video signal that your computer can understand). Elgato makes one but you can probably find cheaper on Amazon--they usually come with a simple program that records the output into a video file for you. Just search VCR capture card.
If you're a gamer, you can also use it to record from your Playstation 2 or any other composite video source!

Are there any *totally legal* sites you use watch movies (whether it be Catalan or not)? I'm really trying to watch some of the movies you recommended a while a ago (like the film about the boy who was arrested) but they are not available on the ones I use (tbf they are latin american websites, but also have Spanish shows like Veneno and Fariña and others). Many gràcies uwu
Thank you for your interest.
I only found one pirate streaming site for Fènix 11*23, the movie you mention. It has Spanish subtitles, you can watch it here.
The legal site it's on is the streaming platform Filmin, which has many Catalan movies and indie movies from all around the world. And people with a library card in Catalonia's library system can also stream it for free from the libraries' streaming service. Otherwise, other services like Google Play and Apple Play rent it for 3.99€.
Tbh, I haven't personally used many pirate sites for Catalan movies (only once that I can remember, and it was on YouTube), because I simply ask for the DVD in my local library. They always have these movies in the public library system and this way the makers can get some money. Now the libraries also have an online streaming service (ebibliocat.efilm) so it's very convenient to use that, because with a library card all is for free. So for anyone who lives here and can do it, that's what I recommend the most. But that's not a solution for people living abroad.
Some movies are available for free (and legally) from the websites of TV channels, but they will only have closed captions in Catalan and not subtitles in other languages. For example, La mort de Guillem, among many others, can be watched that way for free on the website of A Punt or TV3.

I can't believe you described slasher dicks like that 💀🤣 Quick question - Who's your all time favourite slasher and why?
Someone had to do it and I volunteered as tribute 😭
Tumblr media
See, now you opened the floodgates lovely anon!
Saw has been my favorite horror movie franchise for YEARS now. I watched it so long ago, that the first time I wanted to watch it I borrowed the Saw DVD from my local library.
That being said, although I drool like a dog for Mark Hoffman, John Kramer is my favorite slasher of all time.
For me, his philosophy is so interesting and his traps are even better. Say what you want about the sick fuck, but all of the mechanics and planning that go into it are fascinating.
John Kramer is the king of plot twists which more often than not leaves me squealing in astonishment even after five watches.
I also love an “equal-opportunity” slasher. (Meaning he doesn’t kill just women for the hell of it or kill people mid sexy time.)
Yes, the man is hypocritical, but character flaws make slashers have more depth! (Or more confusing when bad sequels are made years later.)
TLDR; John Kramer is a fucked up man, but boy is he an amazing inventor and fun to watch.
Thank you for the question <3

gonna absolutely be that "old lady shaking her walker, and screaming how olden days were better" for a minute here.....
There is a very specific thing I very much miss, and its the... well... lack of streaming. Scheduled programming! (be it both visual or radio. .... the radio one is whole 'nother rant, fuck ClearChannel/Viacom etc etc)
now don't get me wrong - i freakin luv the ability to watch some ancient b/w telly, carefully pumped pixel by pixel into my phone from the library server at 2:45am....
but its the fact Boring Dystopia today doesn't let you escape algorithms & their endless grey sludge
so like... TV! My set cannot pick up regular airwaves signal w/out additional "digital bunny-ears" or something similar. Most stations have switched to digital signals years ago, this is fact.
Back in the day you could flip on the telly, and have the choice of a few local channels. You got your usual local affiliates: FOX, WB, ABC, UPN, NBC, CBS and of course PBS. plus that one endless shopping network
Even as background noise you'd still end up getting all sorts of good stuff with different ads, local news flashes, whatever sitcom was running would have "on the next..." and you'd be like "heeeey, Friends is still making new episodes? and this channel still shows it?" Might hear about some movie didn't know existed because it was mentioned as scheduled for Saturday 8pm eastern, 7 central in that last ad-break, but the visuals in this tiny clip looked neat so might try to see it.....
what can i do today tho... Lets see, there's the option of a bunch of streaming shit. It requires a quick app d/l (again, don't get me wrong, TUBI and PlutoTV are a+ "thank fuck u exist" kinda things) buuuuut ... you can't just leave it be. Even the ads are somehow ... grey formless sludge. The same 3-5 shitty things that are determined by algorithm, never any variation. No news-teases, no trailers for movies coming to theater/streaming soon.... who'da thought would miss the damn Wendys new breakfast deals or local (local) car dealership promos
but no, with a streaming 'oooh wait, 'app' you gotta either scroll thru the shitty UI menu to pick what you wanna watch specifically... or in case of Pluto chose a channel.... Which will be just One Thing on a loop too (like a channel of nothing but Addams Family. nothing but The Walking Dead franchise. nothing but SailorMoon episodes) If you chose an episode of a show, and put away the remote it will just keep jumpin to next episode of same until it runs out...
.... i miss times of day influencing what was on. The kinda shit running during "primetime", early morning cartoons, early-noon little kids targeted shows, mid-afternoon soaps and bullshit talk shows, vs "middle of the night" The silly station eye-catches (TNT...dun dun dun, we know drama), ads for gushers mixed in with quick weather updates as the channel hopes you'll tune in at 10pm for the News. I miss discovering new (new to me!) shows or movies but flipping a channel. Disney Channel used to air ANCIENT b/w Alice Comedies or those utterly ridiculous 70s bebi Jodie Foster movies at 1am. AMC was full of old movies (pre-70s stuff mostly), TLC stood for "the learning channel", MTV and VH1 were 2 distinct separate entities showing actual ~ try to contain your shock ~ music videos. and if u were hella lucky, you'd glitch into (or it was free preview month) MTV2 which was for the alt rock vids!
_________________ No i don't miss the ancient shit like TV set that had round knobs and the numbers only went to 13. The horrid static noises. I don't miss VCRs (needing to rewind, hoping the tape hasn't demagnetized, or deteriorated frm too much use etc) . Fuck, don't even miss Blockbuster w/ their exceptionally ruined DVDs that wouldn't play past a certain point and them just goin "oh well, sorry...." and doin fuck-all
whoda thought would be missing an actual structure of some sort, running all sorts of diverse shit in pre-programmed blocks on set schedules. There was a human touch, the human element to it

Good morning! (here)
Sunday morning tea time. I'm a little late in sending this message. Oh, I just noticed it is the 5th of March. So perfect timing. The launch of our Book Club.
Tumblr media
I have wanted to be a member of a book club for a while. In years past I have gotten the list from my local library and read some of the books on the list. I have never participated in the "club" part. So this is exciting for me. Thank you!
I'll return at the beginning of April with some simple/silly "Book Club" questions. Which we either will answer or ignore. No pressure.
I tried to get a hard copy of My Policeman from my local library, no luck. I did pick up DWD off of the DVD shelf. I haven't watched it yet. Maybe I'll put in on in the background today. I'll see.
I saw the watercolour flowers for your sister. They are lovely. Beautiful colour palette. Lucky sister! Asking for a friend - Do you have an "adopt-a-sister program" in your country?
Happy to report that Louis' ear is better. Still not as good as Harry's ear. Time is running out, Louis will have to live with that ear.
Hope all is well there. Still having questionable weather here. One day ice, next day nice, next day snow. It must be OK today, I can hear the birds singing.
Happy reading! Enjoy your week. W
P.S. - last page first
Hello!
Yay! Here it comes. We will do the book club thing. My dear W, thank you so much for all the hard work you made on that poster. It looks great. Please, join us in this book club if you wish. I am so looking forward to reading the book.
We can survive the wild weather with a nice book and some yummy hot beverage.
Thank you for a compliment on my botanical illustrations. I love making them.
Your adopted sister says hi from Europe!
P.S.: :D, you do you! What were the books you have read from the library list?

How did you first see Slayers and Storm Hawks? Also, which dubs do you prefer?
Oh, an ask. Very nice.
Guess I'll start with Slayers since it's the oldest of the two. I probably found it in the most unconventional manner as a kid just exploring the internet. I was browsing Neopets user pages when I came across a video of Slayers Royal. Now, since this was at the start of the 90s Anime boom and I was getting into it thanks to Sailor Moon and Pokemon, I was very much hooked on it. I tried to get as much information and content on it as I could from exploring webpages on it to reading fanfiction. I also watched a few clips online as well as DVDs from my local video store and library (Also episodes on the internet every now and then). That obsession did die down for a time until Slayers Revo/Evo-R came and breathed new life into the fandom and me.
As for Storm Hawks, this one's a little bit more practical than my Slayers introduction. I was staying over at a family friend's house that had cable. As I browsing channels, I saw an ad for it on Cartoon Network's special and I was like, "Okay, seems interesting." When that two-parter premiered, I became obsessed with it. The world, the characters, all of it. Like before, I started to consume its content from fanmade to episodes on Youtube. And while I wished that the show was a bit more story-driven and mature than presented, I still like it to this day.
Now, it did take a while for me to think of a crossover between the two (As well as others for Storm Hawks). As I said, my obsession with Slayers was kinda dead around that time. But when it came back in full force, I decided to combine the two series for my own self-indulgence. Right now, I have some unrelated one-shots/drabbles that I've written as well as multiple story threads in my head. Will I write an epic fic of the two someday? Maybe. But that could be a long time. =3;
For dubbing, I definitely prefer the Slayers English version as it has a lot of the memorable voice cast that was prevalent during the 90s/Early 2000s. Though the Japanese version is good and I should watch it sometime when I marathon the series. I'm not sure in Storm Hawks has any other dubbing other than the Spanish or Russian episodes that occasionally pop up on youtube. In any case, I like to imagine both of the voice casts interacting with one another for scenarios. It's to think about Crispen Freeman's Zelgadis bantering with Scott McNeil's Stork.

re this post of yours 734011104902201344 regarding the Andy Lau movie
Did you mean the fictional drama movie 'What a Wonderful World' aka 奇異旅程之眞心愛生命 ? Or did you mean Lau's live concert, 'Wonderful World 劉德華香港演唱會 2007' ? Because that's at my local library if you want a dvd rip. Though I'm pretty sure it's not that, unless it's a 2008 re-release of the 1996 movie. Online searches are giving me conflicting titles and NO release year info ugh! I'm having no better luck at finding it to rent legitimately.
I did find the '96 fictional movie on worldcat, but it's on VHS at a Toronto library. I'm in the US, alas. This is the search result link. https://search.worldcat.org/title/45032272
If that's the one you want, any Torontonians with VHS to dvd converters around? Eyes emoji? Or hell, maybe call up that library with your best scholarly begging voice haha "Hello Librarian friend, the next time you weed your collection please send me all your Andy Lau related items, thank you!"
Unfortunately I can't double check if it's available for check out, as that website suffered a cyber attack and got a lot of their data compromised. They're still sorting through things and the website looks unavailable for anyone not a card holder.
In any case, good luck with your white whale!
it's 奇異旅程之真心愛生命 (1996)! directed by samson chiu (of golden chicken fame), it had its theatrical run from 01/11/1996 until 02/01/1996, with a box office of HKD4,038,796
the 2007-2008 concerts i have on my external hard drive already (they're also. on youtube. just in case anyone is interested in seeing andy's concerts. they're extremely well-made like he's the most awarded cantopop artist of all time for a reason <3) which was named after the album of the same name that he released in 2007!
the movie though... the movie is hilariously hard to find especially in cantonese for some reason 😭 like there's also a guy in taiwan who's selling that movie on his ebay but that's the mandarin dub, and ive found another mandarin dub on a torrenting site but that's about it 😭 my written cantonese is like. non-existent tho so probably it's also the language barrier holding me back from searching the most likely places to find it lol
but ohhh thank you for the tip!! i dont have any scholarly credentials to my name anymore but i will take note of that fkdghjg the worst that'll happen is they'll refuse :') anyway this is rly kind of you wahhh i honestly forgot i posted that tbh that was the last time i tried searching for that movie (am currently patiently waiting for the movie emperor to hit cinemas in a widespread release so i can get my hands on a shitty camrip LOL)

With it getting close to time for Summer Reading I wanted to make a friendly reminder to support your local library!! Libraries are one of the few places where everyone is welcome. Libraries also tend to provide services beyond lending books and DVDs. Free internet, programs for all ages and a place for homeless people to hang out during the day. Some libraries, like the one I work at, will even let Patrons check out laptops and wifi devices.
Library doesn't have the book or movie you're looking for? Then there's always the option of ILLs (Inter Library Loan) or the library may end up buying the book or DVD if it's available through their distributors.
Beyond that there's also ways to check out ebooks, audiobooks and movies through sites/apps such as Hoopla and Overdrive or Libby.
And these are just a few things libraries offer. Of course services may differ depending on area. I know our library will let Patrons fax and print documents for a very reasonable price. We also have a computer lab for patrons to use.
Libraries are valuable resources for everyone but especially the less fortunate or poor people. Without libraries there would be a lot less services available to communities. Plus libraries are one of the few free places you can still go to; most of the time (I know in some countries you have to pay for a library subscription to check out books).
Anyways thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Holy shit that internet archive post just made me have a revelation.
When you buy a physical book you can lend it to whoever you want. Physically. You can read it aloud to 50 people or ship it to your friend in another country. You can do that with DVDs too. Have a sleepover, a watch party, send it abroad. As long as it’s not on a large enough scale for the companies to find out. Showing Hamilton on a sheet as a block party with ~ 20 people who knew vs showing it at the local movie theater.
But when it comes to digital versions, do you even own your book? Your movie? If they can revoke access, or sue for sharing or uploading… What makes an email with a zip file different than me lending a book? I guess the fact that there is now another copy out there that wasn’t paid for.
But if digital lending works like rental instead of a copy…
So the lawsuit started with the National Emergency Library, which from what I understand removed the limit to the number of people that could borrow any one book at once to help combat the loss of resources for thousands of students. Four publishing houses took issue with this and opened a lawsuit, maintaining it even after the NEL was closed just a few months later in June of 2020. They want every single book taken down, and a chunk of change each. They don’t like that IA is scanning physical books then putting the whole thing on a public website, while simultaneously in the document saying they have no problem with libraries who follow similar procedures. And the licensing of ebooks essentially makes them function like Netflix. Spotify. Microsoft office. Heated seats. On a pay as you want it basis instead of owning what you buy. Someone from IA made the point that if the lawsuit succeeds it undermines the ability of libraries everywhere to preserve their collections.
(The above paragraph is a summary of a 2020 Nation article with my own thoughts interspersed here and there)
Angery bite bite rage
Not that I really bought ebooks at all recently except as textbook rentals, but I’m going to be avoiding “buying” digital copies of anything from now on. Heads up y’all, CDs are sometimes cheaper than mp3 albums. There are second hand book shops on ebay that do sales often. I live in a small town rn without a bookstore, and I cannot tell you how many books I’ve gotten for less than $5 a piece. If anybody has alternative let me know but Amazon often sells box sets of movies on the cheap. I got all three Kung fu panda movies for maybe $15 bucks, they have the httyd series for 12.
It’s slow going on the movie and music front for me, the amount I want to buy vastly outprices my monthly netflix, hulu, and spotify payments. But I’m more determined than ever to chip away at it.
Libraries should be more heavily protected and supported and internet archive is a library. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

“C’mon, let me get your Snapchat for my friend,” a blonde man, whose excessive use of Axe body spray was hard to ignore, pressed Nymeria in the local coffee shop where she often found herself working. She had strategically chosen this location, a quaint brunch spot that transformed into a bar in the evenings, to avoid encounters like this. Bob Ross videos played on loop in the local café, and the soothing background noise of the painter made it difficult to formulate a response.
“No, thank you,” Nymeria repeated for the second time, her lips pressed together in a tight smile. She made a deliberate effort not to glance in the direction of the thumb the blonde man gestured toward his friend. His face soured, and she continued to stand awkwardly by her table, waiting to unpack her work bag until he walked away.
“Bitch,” the man grumbled as he left to rejoin the group of gym-short clad men near the exit.
That evening, the scenario replayed in Nym’s mind as she sat at her dinner table, staring at the blank journal page before her with today’s date.
The first words she penned were, 'I want to be consumed. I want to be devoured so entirely that when I part ways with someone, a piece of us will remain with the other person forever.' The ink smudged onto the side of her hand as she scribbled these incoherent, angsty thoughts into her journal. Her non-dominant hand hovered near her mouth, fingers between her teeth, biting off what little nails she had left.
Nym had experienced love, of course, but not in the way she yearned for. It didn't matter if her desires seemed selfish. Her family loved her unconditionally, her friends loved her conditionally, but her past relationships always left her craving something more. She wanted to be entirely consumed by another person. Cannibalized.
This yearning led to unhealthy fantasies, making it easy to imagine possibilities with a stranger she locked eyes with in the library. How, if given the chance, she would willingly submit to the person behind the old, forgotten DVDs that no one rented anymore.
Nym never closed the drapes of the French doors that led to her balcony while she changed. Her flat's windows faced the thick greenery of a park, and while she should have been concerned about potential creeps in the tree-line, she liked the idea of someone secretly following her home from ballet practice, observing her naked silhouette winding down for the evening.
Friends often teased her for reading vampire romance novels, an interest she had picked up from stumbling upon Twilight at a young age. The teasing didn't bother her, as she was enamored by the notion that someone would need her blood to sustain their life and choose her over anyone else.
“Ouch,” she recoiled, jerking her finger away from her teeth. A bead of blood formed under the nail she had just bitten off. The sharp pain drew her attention away from her journaling.
Nymeria would willingly give large parts of herself away to be desired that deeply.

hiiiiii blog admin~
I'd love to know if you know where I can watch Business Affair! Preferably for free (I'm poor) AND I'd love to know if there exists a google doc/drive giving access to these underrated Cheis movies and shows!!!
thanks for reading and answering<3
Hello! Sorry for answering this super late (I've been really bad about maintaining this blog). It's been forever since I've watched A Business Affair, but I remember really enjoying it! It doesn't seem to be easy to find on the typical streaming services, unfortunately.
I actually have a DVD of the film that I bought online many years ago. Sometimes when I'm having trouble finding one of his films, I check out my local library for it. Tubi also has some of them, and it's free.
I'd also be curious about if the community has made a Google Doc or some other resource with links to all of his movies. I think it would be really useful!
