There was a home video tape format called Video 2000 (V2000), that was released in late-1970s and discontinued in late-1980s. It was mostly owned by Philips. These kinds of tapes can literally record video content on both sides in the similar way as audio cassettes.

The format itself, had minor success in Europe, just like what Sony's Betamax (Beta) had its same level of success in the US. However, both of them lost to VHS. But, Video 2000 is obscure and unpopular in North America.

Another oldie, but crowd favorite. I used to sell this one as a greeting card and sticker back when I did farmer's markets and art shows.

Maybe I'll have to get back into living the dream of selling art again someday.

I did this for the Foxlings earlier and now I do it for the Aludels over here. I wanted to say thank you to everyone that voted for the crossover piece I'm planning on doing once the last chapter for the first act of 'The Wayfarer' is unleashed (It'll be up on May 10th to give everyone a chance to reread the past chapters before hand). You may know the first two, Ernest and Dorian, but the last one, Fairfax, hasn't been introduced just yet. You'll likely will see that one soon, very soon. Now back to the writing mine I go to get the last chapter of the first act done!

there's something so intimate about owning second-hand vhs tapes

the way that some tapes are stopped right before the credits fully start rolling, only the first line on screen, the tape ejected as soon as the film finished

conversely, the way that even fewer are stopped right before the movie starts, the trailers and ads skipped, ready to be enjoyed on it's next watch right away - how the tape must've been not only rewounded, but either played for a few minutes or even fast forwarded in preparation for the next viewing that the original owner will never see

how sometimes, in the middle of a tape, it gets fuzzy for a moment - did they stop here often? fast forwarded or rewounded right to this exact moment? right before an action scene, a joke - a moment that they wanted to watch and that they paid attention to

and then, the way that entire scenes are fuzzy, going from static back to video back to static, how you'd need to manually adjust the tracking yourself to watch it without static - how many times did they watch this scene? was this their favorite moment in the movie? was it so captivating that they felt compelled to watch it again and again, to take in every single detail? played over and over again, the tape itself warping and distorting with every viewing, the ghost of the previous owner forever entangled with the tape

just.... tapes, and the way that ghosts of previous owners watch them with you, either by letting you know that you are not the first person to watch this, by gifting you a moment of reprieve and letting you watch without interruptions, or by pointing at their favorite scenes, letting you know just how much they liked this tape

This is probably going to sound very wierd so if you could just bear with me:

I follow moosegbt and I saw that in your ask to them you use to be a "video tape archivist"?

My mom was been wanting to put her marriage video that's on a vhs on either a DVD or digitize it. In your opinion, where are some places I should look to for getting that done? None of my family, including me, are very tech savvy, so it might be better if it were done by a professional.

Unfortunately I can't recommend any services as I have not used them, but you might check if any local libraries offer the equipment you need - and they'll probably be able to show you how to use it too. For example, San Diego PL has a Digital Memory Lab.

If you want to try it at home, all you need is a VCR, a computer, and a video capture card (this is the part that converts the analog video from the VCR to a digital video signal that your computer can understand). Elgato makes one but you can probably find cheaper on Amazon--they usually come with a simple program that records the output into a video file for you. Just search VCR capture card.

If you're a gamer, you can also use it to record from your Playstation 2 or any other composite video source!
