I feel like out of all the people I follow you’d appreciate this the most, but fantasy adult toy companies are no fucking joke man. Ok, so... we jokingly call Lestat a dumpster fire (and I mean he is), but there is a reason why he is this main character in The Vampire Chronicles, and that is that he is a tragic hero, and a defiant, and queer one at that.

Throughout his life he gets told that his soul, his love, his "light" is too much to bear - and that is why people leave him. That is why the show hit the nail on the head so viciously (perfectly) with "I'm a lot". I would love to push you over to @cosmicjoke and their reading of The Tale of the Body Thief because they dissect this book brilliantly while reading it right now, and this book deals in detail with these themes. Lestat's guilt, Lestat's way of going about this guilt, Lestat's depressing and jaded perception of himself and the continued rejection by those he loves. That said, this is a continuing theme in the Chronicles. Nicolas, Gabrielle, Louis, David. Marius even, in a way.

He is taught, again and again, that who he is hurts others, and that his love for them is not enough for him to keep them. This is the lesson he takes away from it all, for decades. Centuries even. And he hides it, and hides it well, for the most part.

It's heartbreaking.

Conversely Louis, with all his self-imposed restraints, thinks that his quiet being does not hold a candle to Lestat's light and that he is not enough for Lestat. That he is not interesting enough. Not murderous or ferocious enough. He thinks Lestat will tire of him and his troubles, his need for reflection. (Despite the fact that Lestat comes back to him, time and again. Spies on him, listens in on him. Despite the fact that Louis is one of the few who can tend to him when he is in his coma). And Louis tries to protect himself from this assumption, choosing to withdraw again and again, thereby hurting them both, and repeating the cycle. I don't mean to blame here btw, I can totally empathize with the need to protect one's wounded soul. On both sides.

Because they are and have both wounded souls.

Fatally in love.

Also: I love the last books so much not for the plot itself, but for the fact that Anne finished their arcs, made them find peace in themselves and with each other. What a blessing to have that in a series that spans four decades.
