TGCF Fanbind: 'Til Our Compass Stands Still
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I knew by the end of chapter 1 that this was going to be a binding project. To any TGCF fans - this is 100% a must read! @edenwolfie created a fantastic story with amazing characters. They're writing kept me thinking "one more chapter won't hurt' long into the night. For such a compelling story, I knew I was going to have to pull out all stops to manifest what I had envisioned for a physical bind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was so happy to see how much fanart has been done for this story! I knew I wanted to incorporate all of it, so time and care were put into matching art with scenes - everything is credited to their artists in the "publication" page (not shown because it's just a bunch of very tiny font with tags and the summary). For the chapter headings I chose to not have a word heading and instead just use an image of Ghost City (concept art from Bilibi). The typesetting was designed to look similar to the Seven Seas publications of TGCF.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing I emulated from the TGCF publications was the glossary. I am so pleased with how this turned out! Edenwolfie made a fantastic character sheet to help people keep track of who's who and I wanted to make sure that effort was shown in the book. I added a few entries such as Hua Cheng and Xie Lian's - the additions are taken partly (or entirely) from the Seven Seas publications.
Edenwolfie's extra story A Paper Shield and a Wooden Sword and Communication Array is Down for Maintence, Try Again Later by Naamah_Beherit are also included in this work.
Thank you to Edenwolfie for creating such a rich story! This will be treasured on my shelf!

"Has anyone here heard of a god known as the Crown Prince of Xianle?"
Silence.
"Where did you hear that name?" A voice asked sharply. It belonged to General Xuan Zhen.
"I read it in a scroll, and I was curious why I'd never heard of such an interesting figure," Hua Cheng replied smoothly. "It seems like everyone is in the know except me."
General Xuan Zhen scoffed. "If by 'interesting figure,' you mean 'pain in the ass,' then sure. Be glad you've never heard of him. Don't mention him again."

Hii!!! I was wondering if I could request some He xuan (bf) headcanons, for maybe a Male reader?? I think your writing is just super creative and very enjoyable!! Please whenever you have time :) 🫶
Hi anon! I'm so honored for your praise, I'm so happy that people are enjoying my silly little rambles about ancient Chinese men.
Alright I haven't done this in a while so here we go!
Tumblr media
Okay so we all know that he xuan is grumpy grumpy and lazy. But if he really loves you, you'll see a different side of him that rarely sees the light of day
I honestly headcanon that he xuan is CLINGY like, you'd figure that a fierce ghost who lost everything and had to live alone for centuries wouldn't be clingy right?
He loooooves to cuddle with you. He doesn't need sleep but his mind quiets down whenever you're with him. The memories of his past are less intense and don't weigh on him as much
Despite being clingy that behavior and acts of affection like kissing and hand-holding would only be done later in the relationship. When he's comfortable enough
(despite losing his family I still believe this man has rizz when he wants to)
His expressions also soften. His eyes become more soft whenever he looks at you. His lips display a soft smile instead of his usual frown/deadpan. But it's only reserved for you when you're in quiet places.
Usually, when you are outside and walking he mostly glances fondly at you.
He's very gentle caring and doting.
He'd show you the wonders of the sea, take you on trips, and show you his domain.
He also surprisingly enjoys being very domestic. Helping you with whatever chores you have
(cut to hualian and sqx being gagged because they've never seen hx being so helpful)
He's also very keen on quality time. Even if you are doing separate things or just being comfortable in silence it's those small moments that make it count.
If you know how to cook then oh lord do you have the best partner to taste test your dishes and basically vacuum everything on site.
One of the things he loves to do is wrap his arms around you give you a back hug and perch his chin on your shoulder as he watches you cook
Of course, you spoon-feed him a little of what you're cooking to his to taste test and check for salt and spices
Small kisses are pressed on your neck and shoulders. Innocent kisses to show how much he appreciates you. Not leading to anything else. Just enjoying these tender moments
If you don't that's okay too, cue little escapades to ghost city to enjoy the cuisine :)

hua cheng thinks often about san lang. that maybe, in another life, in another time, he would have been different- better, more innocent, more normal. but as xie lian mumbles in his sleep besides him, he thinks about hua cheng, the remnants of his brief human life. and suddenly, he doesn't really miss san lang anymore. "hello," his lover, his husband, whispers sleepily in his ears next to him. he could get used to this, instead.

“Who-” he breathes. “-the hell asked you to do that?”
No, he thinks through the panicked fog, the evening was going so well.
But it doesn’t matter anymore, and he shakes as he collapses into nearest armchair.
He tries to inhale, but his chest is stilted, barely moving. The light hurts his eye, so he closes it and lets himself fall apart in the middle of empty coffee shop.

| Hush, my love
Tumblr media
Character(s): Jun Wu
TW: Yandere and obsessive behaviour, Stockholm syndrome kind of except you’re aware that it’s happening (?), kidnapping/ forced isolation, conditioning, minor spoilers
Genre: Angst/yandere fic
Notes: Gender neutral reader || I wasn’t supposed to start my Jun Wu spam with one of my slightly fucked up pieces but I had so many fluff pieces that I forgot about all of the horrors and needed a reminder || For @edensrose without whom I would have kept gatekeeping these forever and ever
Tumblr media
There’s no reason for you to look up at the sound of the wall sliding out of place; there’s only one person who even knew that it was hollow in the first place. The light that filtered in almost hurt. You must have been here for a while. It felt like it had been. Your muscles ached like it had been. When was the last time that you moved?
“Have you learnt your lesson now?” He’s so close. You could stand up and reach out to him, you could hold him, hug him; he was so, so close but you needed him to be closer, to please, please, be closer so that you could reach out to him without fear that he would escape your grasp. He did that sometimes, came close enough to touch and then deny you of him. It always hurt but he would hold you when you cried afterwards, sighing indulgently as though you didn’t deserve his comfort. Maybe you didn’t. Not when you acted before he let you. That was why you would get left here. Failing to think before you acted.
Your lip trembled as you nodded, head still down and eyes trained on the now slightly illuminated floor. You couldn’t trust that you wouldn’t start begging for him to stay the moment that you opened your mouth, looked up to see him, felt him close enough to you to touch.
How long had he left you in this room this time? Days, maybe? Weeks? It was dark and there weren’t any windows. The walls were thicker than one would think as well. You couldn’t see the sun to be able to tell what day it was nor hear the goings on outside to keep track of the time. You’d long since gotten used to the feeling of hunger and dehydration and your sleep patterns were irregular regardless so they weren’t reliable indications of how long it had been. None of them would kill you regardless, just hurt. You could vaguely recall the small shrine to you that Jun Wu would light incense to just before he would leave you here.
You looked more closely at the floor. It was still the pale white that it had been the last time Jun Wu had visited but it was slightly greyed with a layer of dust.
You clenched your fists, resolutely keeping them on your lap as the thought of brushing your finger across the floor to see how thick the dust had gotten briefly crossed your mind. You had to keep yourself still for now or he would leave. It didn’t matter that you could feel your nails digging into your skin - when did they get long enough to do that?
“Oh, my poor [Name].” His tone made a choked sob rip from your throat before you could catch yourself, eyes shutting quickly so that you could ground yourself. The sound scratches against your throat and it hurts. How long has your voice gone unused?
He sounded so soft. He sounded like he cared, like he was sorry. Like leaving you in here alone hurt him as much as it did you. Maybe it did. Maybe that would make him less willing to leave you again.
You felt more than heard the brush of fabric as he moved, the dust shifting with each step - towards you, you’d noted - and you were holding on so well but then he crouched down next to you and his hand cradled your cheek so gently and you broke.
Hands trembling so badly that you could see it plain as day even in the dim lighting as they reached out to him in a desperate motion, you clung to him like he was the only thing keeping you alive, collapsing into his arms with what was practically the wail of an animal dying.
Jun Wu’s voice was the only thing that you registered amongst your incoherent sobbing, your pleading for him to forgive you, to know that you were sorry, so, so sorry, to please, please, please not leave because you were so lonely and scared here.
His gentle shushing only had you sobbing harder as his arms wrapped around you, pulling you onto his lap. He rocked you back and forth with him like a child, the hand on your cheek directing your face so that he could press a kiss against your forehead and then rest his lips there as he murmured reassurances to you.
“It’s alright, I have you now.”
Tears continued to stream down your face and your body shook with each sob as you felt your energy disappearing with his every touch as you gave in to his whispered words. He was lying, you knew he was lying and that every word that fell from his lips was nothing but a honeyed trap for you to get stuck within again and again and again, but how could you care when he sounded so sincere? What did it matter when he was holding you like you were more fragile than glass?
You knew what he was doing. You knew that he was just doing this to be able to take away your spiritual energy and reassure himself that he was stronger, to keep you down so that you wouldn’t act out again because he hated it, he hated the defiance he would see from you more than anything - but you couldn't bring yourself to care. You’d seen it happen before, he wouldn’t set aside his ambitions and fears even for those who he claimed to care about the most, for innocents, for children, for Xie Lian, for you.
And he was good at it. He was so horribly capable of ruining you and breaking you down so that you had nothing but him and you would always be left in the same state by the end of it.
You were so lonely, so, so scared of being left in this dark room all alone again and he was there offering you the human contact that you had been begging for. And you should have hated it. You should have pushed him away and left the room and never come back to the heavens. But you needed it so, so badly.
And he knew it. He knew you needed him like you needed air in these moments and there was nothing you could do to change that. And you didn’t want to. Not if it meant that he would keep holding you.
“You know I hate doing this.” His lips brushed against your cheeks, under your eyes - so reverently kissing your tears away that that it almost had you braking down all over again when your cries had only just quietened down to shaky breaths and hiccups.
A weak hum is all you can manage in response.
And then he so carefully gathers you into his arms and what are you supposed to do other than melt into his hold. His lack of a heartbeat doesn’t startle you the way that it did years ago and the cold of his hands doesn’t feel off putting anymore. All you know is the comfort of that all encompassing embrace.
And you give in to it. As you know that you will again, and again, and again.

He sucks in a breath. “I didn’t want it to happen this way, I—” “Wh-what—do you—mean?!” “Well, whenever I thought about it—” “Y-YOU THOUGHT ABOUT IT?!” Feng Xin pauses. He hadn’t meant to say it aloud; and now Mu Qing is staring at him with a mixture of horror and something he can’t quite decipher.  (If he didn’t know better, he’d say it was longing.)
The final chapter of my body swap Fengqing fic was uploaded today! Check it out :) And read the tags/notes!

⚔️ ASHES REMAIN 🔥
My take on how Hua Cheng challenged 35 gods, and defeated the 33 who had accepted.
(Contains spoilers for tgcf book 4/volume 6)
Tumblr media
"What, a ghost offering up his ashes? What kind of wicked games are you playing?!"  "If I came here to slaughter I already could have done so," Hua Cheng states matter-of-factly, "but I haven't." Yet. "What? WHAT?! Listen to this brat." "How about we teach him a lesson?" If this wasn't important, Hua Cheng would say he's outright bored. The Heavens are predictable like this: the reactions are entirely in line with his expectations—which weren't too high to begin with. His proposal works and it doesn't take long for human nature to stick its ugly head in. Even if the gods have forgotten they were once humans, Hua Cheng has not. Greed, selfishness and the unworthiness of the common people—he has seen it all. They haunt him in many forms: a crumbling golden statue, divine temples coming up in flames, passing a black sword from hand to hand. Blood on the altar table… All deeply etched into his mind like the lines of His Highness' beloved name on his forearm.

"Welcome back, San Lang," Xie Lian said, letting go of the vine he had been tugging at. Hua Cheng frowned; his hands were visibly scraped and bleeding. "I didn't think you'd really come. You didn't have to."
"I was curious about this god of yours," Hua Cheng replied, startled at the name for a second. He supposed he never really visited the mortals he gave a fake name to more than once, so he wasn't expecting to hear the name San Lang again.
Hua Cheng thought he caught a brief flash of white across the doorway before Xie Lian stepped back outside, extending a hand to invite Hua Cheng into the shrine.
"You said you have some questions for me? As shrine master, I should be able to answer them."
"Yes," Hua Cheng said, following him inside. "Your god, after he was banished, he didn't disappear, did he?"
---
He saw a flower that looked oddly familiar— although he couldn't place it— and was slightly translucent, almost like a spirit. He reached out to touch one of its petals lightly, and found he could feel it despite its appearance.
Glancing around, he found that the flower gave off a soft, faint glow. He took it in properly; it was the most beautiful flower he'd ever seen. Its petals were delicate, and although he was sure he'd never seen anything like it before, it still inexplicably reminded him of something.
(...But from how long ago? Was he missing another piece of his past, or was he just too old to remember something like this?)
---
some excerpts from chapter 3 of my god hc/calamity xl fic! I am very close to my goal of finishing chapter 3 so I can publish the story on ao3; it's been giving me a bit of trouble because I've had writer's block and this chapter is probably longer than all the other ones combined, but it's finally almost finished!
a note to people who may have been following the snippets of the story I have been posting: everything is subject to change in editing. in fact, I'm pretty sure every single excerpt I've posted here has been changed pretty heavily, with the chapter 2 extract being nearly completely rehauled because I didn't like it (...and it had some accidental plotholes).
anyways, I am very excited to publish this because it'll be my first published fic in quite a long time— and it will be my first tgcf fic! i hope everyone enjoys it, and even if you don't end up reading the real thing, I hope you've enjoyed the extracts so far <3

He's determined to make it work this time, because he can't have what he really wants. Women are the only way he knows, so why shouldn't this work? Hey! I love tgcf and it's fics and wanted recommendations for amnesiac Hua Cheng or Xie lian never saved his life but he still falls in love with him in some other incident? Also, maybe in which Xie Lian and Hua Cheng meet in the heaven because they are both gods? Please.
,w, i was putting off answering to this bc im not sure i have good fic recs on those prompts
Or maybe not exactly fitting them
HOWEVER
I HAVE O N E
For not just amnesiac Hua Cheng
But for Hua Cheng who got his memories about Xie Lian misplaced
You might have read it
Because it’s a great and known fic
But JESUS CHRIST IF YOU HAVEN’T
GET READY BECAUSE IT’S ONE OF THE MOST PAINFUL HUALIAN FICS I’VE EVER READ AND I’VE READ A LOT
It’s called
“No Whater Is Enough”
A canon divergence that takes place in book 5 and turns it into book 4 but WORSE
by the sheer level OF TORTURE AND OVERWHELMING PAIN
And if you want something sweet
My favourite modern au fic fits the second prompt!
Even in modern aus Xie Lian usually saves Hua Cheng in the past in some way
But here they’ve never met before
Yet they fell so, so fast y-y
Oh god i want to rereading it for the third time
Even though it’s 140k words
And it’s called
“possibly, maybe”
There’s also a lil fic which might fit the third prompt
When in Xie Lian’s third ascension it’s just so happened that someone ascended at the same time as him!
That someone being Hua Cheng ofc!
“Double Ascension”
Omg ima reread it too
Hope u haven’t read them already and, if not, hope u’ll like them!!!!

Xie Lian shouldn’t have assumed that he would have a lucky landing. Or jump, really. Little after he jumped, he crashed into a cloud. That would not be a big deal if he still had some spiritual energy left. Then, he would use it to fix his trajectory and make his landing as smooth as possible. He closed his eyes and prepared for an impact and pain.
Only for it to never come.
He did stop falling. But he felt no pain upon the end of his fall. And wherever he was now did not feel like ground. Actually, if Xie Lian had to describe it, he would say it felt like he was in bed covered in silk sheets. Slowly, he opened his eyes, only to see the face of an unknown man staring at him with a look of adoration and relief.
****
Or:
Xie Lian falls from Heaven and Hua Cheng is the one that catches him.
