HOW. COOL. IS. THIS?!?! SmarTea cups from @bloomiteas What?!?! So…in the pretty little box you get 10 cups and 10 lids. Are you ready for this? The tea is in the cup! Yep! It’s tucked neatly beneath a plant based fiber filter that is sealed in the cup (without adhesive, of course). Organic tea and botanicals steeped right in the cup. Convenient! I know you’re wondering (I was too) about oversteeping. It didn’t seem to be a problem at all. You add about 1/4 cup of hot water and swirl it around. You can see the tea leaves expand and they get pretty well compacted under the filter. Top it off and you’re ready to go. This selection is was a nice flavor combo. A little grassy and vegetal green tea with just a hint of rose. It was very fresh and I enjoyed the convenience, too. I’m pretty impressed with this innovation! I love rich black teas and Yunnan Sourcing has provided another great one. This brew is filled with smoky rich malt tones allowing it to pair with red meats.

The temp dropped a bit this week in Michigan, so my timing was perfect to review this rich brew from Yunnan Sourcing. Their Premium AA Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong is an incredible pine smoked black tea with amazing depth.

My initial thought was that this tea was one dimensional, but I was wrong. This tea has great acidity, body, and integrated smooth mouthfeel with rich flavors of smoked toasted malt, tobacco, and grilled/smoked meats.

Pairing this will be fun. I happened to just smoke some Canadian bacon and it was a perfect pairing. This tea will work with game meats like duck and ostrich but pair well with a steak or pork burnt ends.

Customer Review of Huang Da Cha Yellow Tea

"What a fascinating tea! Not like other yellows I have had from China (similar to one I have had from Russia) as it is chocolatey, roasted, and very sweet. Tasting more like an oolong or hong cha, it is great when I want those tastes but don't want a ton of caffeine."

🫖 Gryphon Contessa Grey

Darjeeling tea with eucalyptus and shiso. Without milk, it's not as nice. A little too herbal. With both milk and sugar, it becomes much more fragrant and it carries the milk very well. Would recommend for milk tea.

A hundred bucks a month. That’s what it cost my father to rent the *ahem* auxiliary dwelling unit on the walnut ranch way way way way back in 1991. Jordan was chasing title number one of six and pops and me were figuring out every Thursday’s and every other weekends. Little ladder to a loft space; futon mattress on the floor. Hot dogs and a black and white TV with Mash on. Space invaders on the Atari. Kept a machete on the porch. Called it the Samurai Sword. Tossed overripe watermelon and zucchini into the air and swung like a baby Babe Ruth. Old yellow moped buzzing like a dying wasp. I got wedged between lap and handlebars as we’d swerve through the trees, balding tires not meant for taking on tough colossal walnut shells. At the far end of the acreage was a fence. It served to represent differentiation but we were not to be dissuaded. We were Mario and Luigi riding a tamed and rattling Bowser ready to the save the Princess. Peach. Princess Peach. Sneak sneak we would enter. In the orchard like spies. Looking for the ripe ones the heavy hangers the succulent. Skin fuzzy like soft whiskers petting lips anticipating the burst of juice running down chin down neck into loose-fitting summer shirt. Pits getting spit and thrown and buried back on our side of the fence hoping that sunlight and rainstorm and a blessing from the cosmos would grant us our own little maker of heaven. We’d never take any back. My favourite mug, the planting pots and the rose’s colours matched so nicely... So I brew a green and flowery tea and enjoyed the sensorial sensations. Gifts...daughter’s rose, my tea. A friend visiting Anhui in China brought me this wonderful pack of Huangshan Mao Feng. A picture of Xie Zheng An at the front side of the pack, he developed the recipe for this famous tea from the Yellow Mountains in 1875. The dry leaves are curled and come in shades of green, silver and gold. Lovely. Brewing instructions on pack tell me to brew at 90 degrees C. If brewed too warm, this one gets easily bitter. So personally I prefer to brew this one on 80-85 degrees so it stays nice and sweet, grassy, flowery, very soft and well balanced. After steeping, the leaves are bright green with hardly any oxidised edges. They have a promising fragrance, so I am looking forward to the next brew.
