I am very silly, and bought this mini because the reference on the wrapper made me laugh. I love Documentary Now. Maybe I’ll ramble about it over on instagram later, but for now I will talk about the tea itself. The description of this tea that W2T gives is interesting; they note the tea is made of some older material they were waiting to press. Once again, we are all left to ponder what this material exactly “is”, which W2T always leaves a mystery. Aroma hit me as punchy, at first. I was worried about the bitterness as the aroma seemed young and green. But, it also smells sweet, sugary, and fruity. It smells a lot like Yiwu, but I’m uncertain as W2T is a strange mysterious wizard with its sources. Liquor is gold, crisp, soft. Cloudier and thicker than some young sheng I’ve had recently. This tea is a treat for sweeter young puerh drinkers. It’s quite a special tea. Notes of jasmine, wood, and fresh fruit. Leaning a tad on the floral side rather than the fruity. Give this mini a try if it sounds good for you. Maybe snag a cake if you’re feeling ballsy. It’s a good one.

As regards influences in my life, I can categorically affirm that training at the Earlham Street Dojo with Steve Morris1979 - 80 was a one of several wake up events. All contact with remarable men will open up a challenge and set you on a certain path of discovery or one of denial. Steve Morris broke the mould in many respects and set me on a course that fuelled a lifeling interest in functional movement over form practice. The so called Internal systems are just as flawed as the Karate that Steve dissects so well in the article below. For me whole body function and natural movement are really in dire straights in the world of compliant martial arts practice, including the so called internal arts. How I met Steve Morris as a 19 year old. I saw a sign in the window of the Steve Morris's 1st floor Earlham Street Dojo every time I came and went from Victor Kan's Wing Chun basement school, which was ditectly opposite. For personal reasons Wing Chun did not impress me, so on my final day of frustration with Wing Chun, I ascended from Kan's coal cellar and onto the pavement, pausing, staring for a few moments at a hand written sign in the window opposite that simply said Kick Boxing, a sign that had beckoned for many months, I marched across the street, through the open door, headed up a flight of stairs, doubled back and up a few more steps into a small entrance that had a window on the right. I stopped dead, the atmosphere was intense and I looked at photo's on the wall of a long haired bloke bare chested wearing Gi trousers smashing huge concrete looking blocks, like a reversal of scene in the movie Leon, I was about to meet someone very very serious. I glanced through and caught the eyes of the man himself and walked in to be greeted by a martial arts genious, what he showed me in that first meeting blew my mind. 15 Years Aged Golden Melon Ripe Tuo | Yunnan Sourcing

This aged ripe has a strong energy and thick flavor. It’s now one of my favorites from Yunnan Sourcing! The wet leaf smells of wood, chocolate, and mashed berries. I may have a bias for aged shou, but the flavors are very pleasant. A nice broad wet wood flavor with hints of vanilla at the forefront. Behind it, there are notes of brown sugar and rich earth. This tea lasted me many steeps, however the tuo is tough to break apart. You will need a strong tea pick for this one! I found this shou to be a perfect example of what an aged ripe can be. If you’re planning on making a Yunnan sourcing order, and have never tried aged shou, this is the tea for you. It’s affordable, but is a lovely goalpost for new sippers.

Got some new teaware! A classic gaiwan from Mud and Leaves, and a teacup from White2Tea. The gaiwan pours like a dream. I never really thought much of how smoothly a gaiwan pours until I used this one, and the difference between this and my Mei Leaf gaiwan is pretty stark. Tea is a half and half mixture of traditional and smoked lapsang, both from White2Tea, and will get a journal spread eventually.
