best of sara's fic, according to her
Because I’m feeling some kind of way about my cancer lately and wanted to put together a Sara’s Greatest Fic Hits while I’m still around to do it (which is a morbid thing to type, but see the intro: been feeling some kind of way lately).
These range from my most popular fics, to the ones lost to weird posting hours, and everything in between. If I counted correctly, there are 14 fandoms on this list: from Mass Effect and Dragon Age, to Grey’s Anatomy and Stargate SG-1, to The West Wing and Calvin & Hobbes.
I’d appreciate reblogs on this (I am not ashamed to pull the stage iv cancer card here) so it can reach as many people as possible.
I have been writing fic for over 15 years; this is not a short list.
All are rated T or lower unless otherwise indicated. All stories are at or under the 3k mark unless otherwise indicated.
Stargate SG-1:
waves are universal (the heaven in hiding remix) (Sam/Jack; I’m very Normal about this fic; time travel and alternate realities, a host of OCs (and some familiar faces from Norafic if you look closely), oh and the Sam/Jack kid from the alternate reality! Only she’s an adult and working on a way to save the world! This has it all, folks: humor, romance, angst, action! I told you I’m Normal about it; 40k)
strange is the night where black stars rise (Sam; horror! A low creeping sense of doom! The King in Yellow! No, seriously, fuck that planet; 10k)
#sg1wedding (Sam/Jack; their wedding turned into An Event against their will; bets are going down about who would win in a fight: Bra’tac or the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs; also Jack loses his socks; twitterfic from 2012 and technology has definitely Marched On, just read it like an unhinged group chat fic)
phoenix (Sam/Daniel/Teal’c, Sam/Jack, Sam/Jack/Daniel/Teal’c; apocalypse (that I consulted a real live geologist on!); rebuilding in the wake of said apocalypse; team family feelings, kids, and some really shitty neighbors; 38k)
Dragon Age:
joy cometh in the morning (Ariadne; rated M; a host of OCs; mind the warnings; friendship; worldbuilding galore; friendships and mentors and first loves; did I mention friendship and worldbuilding?; 56k)
through the rude wind’s wild lament, and the bitter weather (Ari+Cullen; quiet magic, kind magic, good magic is still new to Cullen)
as the sun kissed the horizon (Ari/Josephine; a relationship in ten moments)
‘til we meet again (Ari+Cullen; platonic sleeping together!)
so hold my hand, consign me not to darkness (Ari; her faith is the core of who she is and, for the first time, Andraste isn’t there; post-Trespasser)
raise your fists up to the sky (Kylie/Krem; it’s Krem’s first day with the Chargers and there’s a naked elf in the middle of camp)
every demon wants his pound of flesh (Krem+Bull; Krem was in the Fade with the Inquisitor and the fear demon had some Things To Say To Him)
black dove (Anaya) & strange little girl (Anaya+Dagna) & dissolving clouds (Anaya+Cullen) (because neurodivergent Inquisitor, friendship, blossoming romance, and three very different takes on blood magic)
skeletons (Zahara+Bull; she is saarebas, he is Ben-Hassrath, and language is important)
children shouldn’t play with dead things (Juliette Amell; she’s always had an easier time with the dead than the living; cw for bugs)
a sorta fairytale (Josephine/Cassandra; flower shop & tattoo parlor AU; 8k)
Mass Effect Trilogy:
gonna set your flag on fire (Nora Vakarian, Liv/Garrus, James/Liara, Liv+Liara, Livfam; action! Humor! Angst! Worldbuilding! OCs!; I am Super Normal about this fic too; I promise everything’s okay in the end, promise, even though it isn’t written yet; Nora is an N3 and has an inactive control chip in her head. She and her team are ordered to investigate a Cerberus facility. It goes, shall we say, awry; 40k)
anthem (Liv/Garrus, Hannah/Zaeed, Liv+Liara; eight months is a long time without each other; angst with a happy ending (I promise); post-Destroy; 13k)
holy ground & dress (Liv/Garrus; ficlets from the night he gets sworn in as Councilor)
brightly shone the moon at night (Liv, Liv+Liara, Liv/Garrus, Livfam; five Christmases in Olivia Shepard’s life; 5k)
the pieces of gold, they light up your eyes & now we’re alone, now we’re alive (Liv/Garrus; the evolution of a relationship)
fighting is said to have reached palaven (Liv/Garrus; please, please let him be alive)
and some things you just can’t speak about (Quentus+Nico; the war)
‘cause i know that it’s delicate (Liv/Garrus; pre-wedding!)
nosce te ipsum (Nico; he likes boys and fanfiction and he didn’t think he’d get his little italicized oh moment)
i will write you love letters if you tell me to (Liv/Garrus; Hannah gives him one of Liv’s notebooks before he goes off to Omega; Garrus does the only thing he can think of with it)
i really need you (Liv/Garrus; James POV during the reunion scene in Priority: Palaven)
you look really tired (Liv/Garrus, Liv+Liara; post-Thessia, Olivia’s not doing well)
hey, so, ground rules (Liv+Zaeed; it’s a lot weird now that he’s dating her mom)
and all the scars you bear are from a previous war (Liv+Quentus; Mom!Liv)
you can hear it in the silence (Liv/Garrus; just a moment, post-war)
this all started because of a bad day (Liv/Garrus; from first meetings to matching rings)
combat, i’m ready for combat & turn on your favorite nightlight (Hannah; she’s a civilian and her daughter isn’t, and she’s bound and determined to know what Liv goes through when her boots hit the ground; Hannah, Zaeed, Liv, and Garrus hit up Armax)
four quarians who never made it back to the fleet (and one who did) (kinda what it says on the tin, honestly. Oh, Tali’s in this!)
everyone’s lost, the battle is won (Evangeline; somewhat predictably, my experiment in getting as many of my team killed as possible resulted in Feelings About It)
across the sky (Susan/Liara; how to make the Control ending feel good)
and yours is in red underlined (Vanessa; The Illusive Man has pissed her off for the last time)
i’m headed straight for the castle (Vanessa; renegade control ending; kneel before your queen)
Mass Effect Andromeda:
for saviours (Tori; ten scenes from a pre-Andromeda life; 10k)
ringing joyful and triumphant (Tori/Liam/Jaal; just some morning fluff)
the thing with the baby angara (Tori/Liam/Jaal; thinking about the future)
the undone and the divine (Tori/Liam/Jaal; the lone single solitary explicit fic on here, give it props for that alone; Liam gets absolutely railed by his partners. That’s it. That’s the fic.)
you’re like the thing that makes the universe explode (Sara Ryder/Suvi, Drack; kid, the only people who don’t know that you like Suvi are people who haven’t met you and Suvi)
this one’s for the torn down, the experts at the fall (Tori+Garrus; one night in the intersection of Victoria Ryder and Archangel; maybe they’re better friends than they both thought)
The West Wing:
a great revelation sigh (CJ; she’s Chief of Staff; ten steps to the apocalypse; the apocalypse source probably didn’t age well, heads up)
it’s in my blood and i won’t give up ‘cause it’s running through my veins (Amy+Andi; it’s Election Day in the future and Amy has nothing to do)
Grey’s Anatomy:
dropsonde (the singers in a lower choir remix) (Addison/Alex, Derek/Meredith, Addison+Derek, Addison+Mark, Mark+Derek; the one that kicked off all the remixes; absolutely off the rails from canon somewhere in S3; budding romances and kidfic and my theory about people being storms and lighthouses; 40k)
scarlet city (Mark/Addison, Burke/Cristina; film noir gangster and detective AU; Addison’s the gangster, Burke’s the detective; literally everyone I could fit into this fic shows up; also Denny is comic relief; 18k)
Misc:
access records (Star Trek Voyager; Naomi Wildman’s holodeck access for the past week; worldbuilding!)
in this twilight our choices seal our fate (the song in the house of night remix) (SVU; Olivia/Elliot; rated M; on the rise and fall of partnership; probably a little too much religious imagery but what the hell else am I gonna do with a minor in religious studies?; 4k)
the end of days job (Leverage; Parker+Eliot+Hardison; the apocalypse job, basically; this one ages well!)
let the only sound be the overflow (D&D; Calia/Kelpie/Edal, aka ot3: fathoms below; the ocean is big and they are not)
we are golden stars above silver seas (we hear echoes from another galaxy) (Calvin & Hobbes; Calvin+Susie; throughout all those years, she never gave up on him; this one went viral on tumblr [LINK] and I cleaned it up for the AO3 version)
lift her, pull her, from the orchids (Grace and Frankie; Grace/Frankie; the one where I invoke the spelling bee)
rocket queens (Babylon 5/Pacific Rim; Susan Ivanova/Talia Winters; look, they’re jaeger pilots, I really don’t know what else to tell you)
the great gig in the sky (Battlestar Galactica; Six; rebirth is painful, she forgets this sometimes)

Here’s a rare glimpse of three SG-1 members in casual Earth garb!  I appreciate that Teal’c took the time to color-coordinate his hat and shirt.

Stargate Character Analysis
Based on what I think they’d have as their song in a relationship
Jack: In Spite of Ourselves by John Prine. I think it’s just uncouth enough that he’d love it and his perfect level of sappy. It’s a song that doesn’t take itself seriously and in turn that makes it one of the best love songs I’ve ever had the good fortune of hearing.
Daniel: Our House by Crosby Stills and Nash. This is a song that is so incredibly cosy and I think that’s fundamentally what he wants. Growing up in the foster system, I don’t think he ever would have had a sense of home. I think with the right person, he’d finally have that. I’d just like to point out the words “life used to be so hard, now every thing is easy cause of you and our house” are very Daniel In Love. Also alternatively, I think he’d have strong feelings towards the song Androgynous (specifically the Crash Test Dummies version) because Daniel and the concept of Gender isn’t something I see going well together.
Sam: Tonite is a Wonderful Time (to fall in love) by April Wine. I don’t think she’d be into the ballads necessarily but I think she’d crave the sentiment. This song falls perfectly in the middle of being sappy and high energy. I think it would remind her of long nights spent talking with her partner as they both work away at the kitchen table, catching glances of each other over their laptop screens.
Jonas: M+M’s by Blink-182. I think he’d also want a more high energy song, but I don’t think he’d want the traditional sentiment of a love song. Blink-182 managed to capture the feeling of being 20 and in love with a tongue in cheek sense of humour that I think would really resonate with Jonas. I think he’d be going on adventures with his partner at any opportunity with a living in the moment lust for life that attitude.
Teal’c: When I’m Sixty Four by The Beatles. I think he’d appreciate the implied longevity of the relationship as well as how happy it sounds. I think it reminds him how much he missed his family and why he’s working so save the galaxy. I think he’d also love Dance Me to the End of Love by Leonard Cohen for similar reasons.
Vala: Tainted Love by Gloria Jones. I think she heard the Soft Cell version first but prefers the original. I just feel like she has a tendency towards unhealthy, largely sex-driven relationships. It’s either that or like WAP or something lmao
General Hammond: You’re Always On My Mind but specifically the Willie Nelson version. We all know papa Hammond is always working and I can only imagine the strain that puts on his relationship. I think this song says exactly what he wants to say but can never find the words. I also think he would think of his kids every time he hears Leaving on a Jet Plane by John Denver. My dad once said that he used to listen to that song when he’d leave on deployment early in the morning because he’d often leave while we were still asleep and he found that the song captures that sentiment really well.

Stargate rewatch: 1x07 The Nox
Tumblr media
aka Space Pacifists.
“We've already visited 19 separate worlds." EXCUSE ME?!?! Abydos, Chulak, Mongol planet, planet where Sam "drank the stuff", The Land of Light, UV planet, blue crystal planet, and that's just SG-1. I'm being generous and not counting any of the home planets they sent the refugees from CotG back to, but that only leaves 12 planets for all nine SG teams to have visited offscreen in the months before this? Even taking into account that not all of them may be exploration teams, this is stretching credulity. Was this episode meant to be earlier in the season?
Daniel and Sam are back in their helmets - maybe this was meant to be placed earlier.
Why did the Nox cloak the Stargate in the first place if they want to be left alone?
This episode was written by Hart Hanson, who would go on to create/exec produce Bones. It was his only Stargate script.
By a galactic coincidence, Apophis is also looking for the invisibility hummingbird at the very same time SG-1 is - but it kind of works, Apophis has had a First Prime rebel against him, he’d be afraid of looking vulnerable to the other system lords and is in need of an advantage over them.
Tumblr media
Watching these episodes in HD you can really see how much everyone is just acting though the Vancouver rain. Look at poor Chris Judge’s head!
Daniel is all in tither wanting to capture Apophis - it’s the first real mention we’ve had of Sha’re and Skaara in several episodes. He’s the one pushing for it - when things get Personal for Daniel he gets fixated and while he marshals his arguments, they’re coloured by emotion.
Jack by contrast keeps it tampered down - but he wants to be convinced and in the end quite easily is, importantly with Teal’c’s support (which isn’t given without bias either). Sam is the only one with reservations.
I think this is the first time we see Daniel actually fire his weapon. Doesn’t hit anything though.
Apophis personally takes out Jack, Sam, and Daniel, which is kind of badass. He’s a Goa’uld who leads from the front lines.
That’s death no. 2 for Daniel so far.
“Dal shakka mel - I die free.” This will become a mantra for Teal’c and the Free Jaffa moment, although they later change the Goa’uld version to Shal’kek nem’ron.
Jack and Sam both sniff the fruit the Nox give them, and Jack gives it a little buff before taking a bite. Sam doesn’t actually seem to eat it, and Daniel’s too distracted trying to communicate to do anything but hold it.
Tumblr media
“You attacked them.” I love Lya so much, and she had their number here - it’s a good setup because absent of context it does look like SG-1 was trying to kill Apophis without provocation, and the Nox have good reason to be wary of them.
“We just wanted to take him back to our world to have a little chat with him about all the nasty, bad things he’s been doing.” I love RDA’s delivery of this. And Daniel, echoing the bad, looking pretty murderous, seeing as Apophis has been doing those bad things to his wife. I do appreciate that Shanks commits to playing the subtext around Sha’re even when it isn’t explicit in the dialogue.
Tumblr media
Great dynamic between Teal’c and Shak’l - he could not be the mentor Bra’tac was for him, and created a rival rather than an acolyte.
Aw, Jack still getting jittery about weapons around kids.
“Knowledge takes time, and over the years we teach the young to be wise.” Daniel trying to get information out of grandpappy Nox but not really hearing what he’s saying - that knowledge must be learned, not simply told. This is the arc for Daniel over the whole series and particularly around his later ascension - at this stage he wants to absorb as much information as he can, without really understanding it.
Daniel wearing gloves most of this episode again when no one else seems to be.
Great scene between Jack and Anteaus as well - Jack’s frustration comes from a good place, but it’s misguided and paternalistic.
Tumblr media
I love the faerie, wood-sprite aesthetic of the Nox, especially this branch/flower arbor.
LOL Sam kicks one of the Jaffa right in the crotch. And due to a continuity error, we see it twice!
Daniel then shoots the Jaffa with a staff weapon - unclear whether or not he dies (if so I guess the Nox bring him back to life). But it’s not as if this is the first time Daniel has killed, he offed at least one Jaffa in the movie, so I guess he’s a better shot with the staff weapon than a handgun.
“The very young do not always do as they are told.” This might as well be the show’s tagline.
Tumblr media
Interesting that we’ve had two cautionary tales so far, to ensure the show isn’t always in favour of US imperialising all over the galaxy.

1.05 “The Broca Divide” pt 2:
I want to throw the first half of Everlasting Man at the entire concept of this episode.
All right, though, I'll admit that "She... tried to seduce me." "Oh! ...You poor man" is a very funny exchange. Maybe it’s just the awkwardness. Maybe it’s Daniel’s deadpan. Maybe it’s that they both seem able to accept it as just an awkward occupational hazard of Gate travel—sometimes your teammate may try to seduce you, and all you can do is fend them off, fix the problem, and move on.
Ooh, I like how Jack seems to be talking in a completely rational tone, even as his sentiments get more off-the-wall, all the way up to the “physically whaling on Daniel” point. It’s disturbing. Again, subtlety and incomplete corruption is often spookier than a sudden and complete takeover.
Daniel, realizing that two of his friends have been taken by this dumb Caveman Disease: all right, now I’m mad >:(
“Mr. Teal’c” aw, I appreciate your courtesy, Janet
“I think it's safe to say they aren't born primitive, they must have this very contagious disease, and we came in contact with them... isn't that special.” Have I mentioned I enjoy Daniel being sarcastic and aggravating? It’s lots of fun.
Oh hey, this means Daniel and Teal’c have to interact because they’re the only sane team members left! GOOD.
AND they have to go on a mission with just the two of them. Into the deep end, considering we really haven’t seen them interact directly before.
First “Daniel Jackson” from Teal’c!! (Incidentally, I think we can assume Teal’c is very very focused on “do NOT let Daniel Jackson die while offworld under my protection,” right now.)
Daniel instinctively moving to help the new leper-girl they see unconscious and getting mad about her abandonment is correct Daniel Jackson Behavior. More of that, please, Daniel.
...Oh, yeah, Daniel and Teal’c are not a good team right now. Teal’c is very focused on fulfilling his duty, accomplishing their objectives, and not endangering either the mission or themselves (again, I think that’s about Daniel, thought he didn’t say so), and is not up for arguing. Daniel has seen a helpless person in need by the side of the road, and Teal’c telling him what to do just activates his contrarian streak. Also, they have no built up trust yet, not really. They’re completely out of sync... which is how Daniel can get abducted by the cavemen while Teal’c is trying to fend them off and doesn’t notice.
Jack, his mind 80% gone, clinging to shreds of coherency induced by the dangerous level of sedative he begged for: “Experiment... on me. Use me.” HE’S STILL TRYING TO PROTECT HIS PEOPLE.
HAVE I MENTIONED JACK O’NEILL IS THE BEST.
(Also, fighting to retain his self and save others while being driven mad is distressingly on brand for Colonel Jack O’Neill and we WILL be seeing this behavior again. JACK.)
The ruler of the Land of Light is a PUNK and his clothes are RIDICULOUS and I hope Teal’c punches him.
Aw, no, he knocked out the guards instead, because the leader ran away from Teal’c like the punk he is.
The prosthetic caveman eyebrows are very funny. I forgot about them.
Oh GOSH. Teal’c’s actions after losing Daniel were 1) go to the Land of Light people and ask them to help him find Daniel. 2) When they refused to help at all, take blood samples by force. 3) Return to Earth and give Dr. Frasier said blood sample. 4) Go to Jack’s cell (again, Jack is barely cognizant) and immediately confess his fault in losing Daniel.
That... that’s a meta in itself about how Teal’c’s mind works, and his ethics and honor and decision-making process at this point in his character. Even without dialogue points like his insistence that “It is not a curse. It is a disease,” because Teal’c hates superstition, and his anger at people who are in their own way living—as he used to!—in a culture of cruelty born from despair. It just. It’s a lot.
Janet, trying to explain her scientific breakthrough to Jack (barely articulate) and Teal’c (knows no science): Tough crowd huh
Oh NO Teal’c is gently moving Jack to lie down on the bed before leaving him, while they wait for the treatment to work? Teal’c is PUTTING A BLANKET OVER HIM? I wasn’t prepared for that.
And of COURSE he proceeds to sit outside Jack’s cell door, meditating, until Jack yells for him. Where else would he be.
“Lucy! I’m ho-ome!” Another classic exchange. (And I’m trying to decide if Teal’c is trying to make joke, re: “You may still be confused.” He could have been! Hi poker face is too good to tell.)
Okay I KNOW they were in a literal plague-outbreak situation and probably didn’t have any able bodies but you’d still think they could have sent SOMEBODY to go pick up Daniel from caveman-land a little earlier? Or maybe it WAS pretty early and they didn’t show it well, I dunno. I just did not feel the urgency i would have expected here.
Daniel’s first conscious word was “Jack.” Yeah, that’s typical. (I say this with affection.)
Teal’c was carrying his glasses. When did he even pick them up? I don’t know! But here we are again with the acts of service!
SG-1, repeatedly and vehemently whenever they come to a post-Goa’uld world: “WE ARE NOT GODS! NO, REALLY. STOP WITH THE KNEELING.”
Next time for SG-1: Sam’s Crazy Ex!
I haven’t actually watched that one before, so should be interesting.

Thanks to @ichooseviolence for tagging me!
RULES: List eight shows for your followers to get to know you better!
Game of Thrones: This should go without saying, given that it’s successor HOTD single-handedly brought me back to this madhouse. Three Seasons of some of the greatest television ever made, an alright fourth season followed by four seasons of pure, concentrated dog piss (of which I subjected myself only to S5 and 6).
Deadliest Warrior: If not for a subpar third (and final) season, this show would be 100% GOATED. The smack talking between the experts, the weapons demonstrations, the acted out fights at the end, all of it *chef’s kiss*. The DW discussion groups on Facebook were a major stomping ground of mine, and getting to interact with the experts on the DW Experts discussion group was a highlight of my teenage years.
The Wire: Only seen Seasons 1 and 2, still need to complete my watch through of all five seasons, but DAMN is The Wire good (also RIP Lance Reddick aka Lt. Daniels).
Yugioh 5Ds!: This and VRAINS are the only of the Yugioh anime that I’ve watched all the way through thus far. For all the jokes about “card games on motorcycles,” 5Ds is unironically amazing.
Justice League/Justice League Unlimited: Maybe some of the greatest children’s programming ever made, and you don’t even need to be a child to enjoy it or appreciate the stories (Wonderbat and Question x Huntress are S-tier).
Stargate SG-1 & Atlantis: Before Christopher Judge voiced Kratos, before Jason Momoa was Khal Drogo and Aquaman, there was Teal’c of Chulak and Ronon Dex. Col. Jack O’Neill is an American Hero.
Merlin: Watched it with my younger sister and loved every minute of it; it’s fun to see how far many of the actors from the show have come (esp. Tom Hopper aka Sir Percival).
Berserk: This one isn’t necessarily a show per se. There’s been two anime adaptations of the manga: the 1997 adaptation of the Golden Age Arc, and the Golden Age trilogy movies along with the 2016-17 Anime (DO NOT subject yourself to the 16-17 anime if you value your eyeballs). God willing we’ll get a proper adaptation someday, maybe when the Manga is completed.
Gonna tag @lemonhemlock, @aegonette, @cesarescabinet, @alicentcole, @chaoticcoffeequeen, @notbloodraven and @miqaelababa

Come Home
Chapter 10 18+
Jack showed her everything he could think of. Ova had an interest in the ocean life, so he took her to an aquarium and she got to see turtles and all sorts of coloured fish that she was amazed by. He took her further up the coast to see people surfing and jet skiing, he took her to all the best places to eat, played pool with some of the locals, and he taught her to drive.
At night they sat either in front of the fire and talked about more things he wanted to show her, or outside on the edge of the pond, talking about Olympus and how much she missed it. Jack wasn’t that interested in the war she was fighting, as far as he was concerned it was several galaxies away and with little chance of any of them still being around after ten thousand years.
Ova taught him to play a strategy game of her own, called Maze. It was about as complicated as chess, but the opposite player designed a strategically complex maze for you to navigate. Each move led to a decision and it was intense. He only won one game in the fifteen they played, but she was as equally excited for him as he was that he’d done it.
They met up with Daniel one day and Jack hung out with Teal’c while Ova learned about Earth cultures from different museums. She was excitable and curious and Daniel loved it, Jack just laughed to himself that he finally found someone as excited about fossils as he was.
‘She seems to be happy, O’Neill.’ Teal’c commented while they sat outside the museum waiting for them.
‘Yeah.’ Jack nodded, fidgeting a little.
‘There is only one day left for her to see Earth,’ he went on. ‘Do you think you will be able to convince her to stay in that time?’
‘I’m not trying to convince her to stay, Teal’c.’ Jack looked at his friend. ‘Her people might be out there and she’s gotta go find them. I’m giving her reason to come back if she… look, the more Ancients we have on our side, the better as far as I’m concerned.’ Jack worried his pause in speech would have given him away.
Teal’c regarded him for a moment. ‘Are you not curious about the five?’ Jack just sighed in response. ‘Major Carter believes the five to be beings of great significance and Daniel Jackson agrees with her.’
‘Yeah Teal’c, I am curious,’ Jack snapped, though Teal’c didn’t take offence in the slightest. ‘But right now, the important thing is to make sure Ova comes back home once she’s done what she needs to out there.’
‘Indeed.’ Teal’c hummed and continued to look out at the view of the museum in front of them.
Jack thought about what he wanted Ova to see next. In truth, he’d rather take her home and listen to her talk some more, but he knew that would lead his mind to other things. He tried not to think on her like that, she only had a day and a half left and he wasn’t going to be selfish about it.
She was spending time with Carter and Teal’c the next day, they’d scheduled in a flight in one of the planes used for close combat. Jack hoped she’d like that, a chance to see what the air force saw when they were flying into a war zone. She’d seen all the good things, but she was a soldier at heart and might have appreciated some of the more combative elements of human society.
Ova and Daniel were talking a million miles an hour about Ancient Egypt and how they eventually evolved into the Goa’uld they knew today, she was fascinated by the recording of the Egyptian Gods as well as those of Olympus and the Greeks. Ova had a sadness to her when he spoke of the twelve Olympians.
She moved the conversation along and Daniel took that to mean that the Greek myths may have had some grounds in truth as well. He wanted to press her, but the war wasn’t that long ago for her, so bringing it up was a risky move if he didn’t want to upset her.
Jack saw both Daniel and Ova coming out of the museum finally and decided they should all go to dinner. Ova loved hearing stories about their missions together, she especially loved the ones at Jack’s expense which he didn’t mind, only defending himself a little and not wanting her to lose her smile.
Carter joined them for dinner and they all went to a bar, Carter and Ova played pool and wiped the place clean between them. Jack just sat with a beer in hand watching how happy Ova was when she was surrounded by people and having fun. She really was beautiful.
Eventually it was time to go back home and they all said their goodbyes, Ova hugging Teal’c much to his surprise, but the stoic Jaffa just wrapped his arms around her in return and it was sweet in a way.
Ova talked nonstop about all the things Daniel had taught her and although Jack was barely listening, the sound of her voice soothed him. Once they got home, Jack decided it was another nice night to sit by the pond. He grabbed a couple of blankets and some ice cream, something she’d taken a liking to when they ate out.
Ova settled looking up at the clear night sky, she seemed at peace and Jack had half a mind to just leave her be, but his desire to sit beside her was more overwhelming than that.
Jack sat down and handed her a blanket which she wrapped around her shoulders and sighed into the comfort of it. He looked up at the stars with her for a moment, enjoying the sound of their surroundings.
‘So, which direction is Olympus?’ He asked. Ova looked at him and smiled, she pointed somewhere behind them.
‘It’s somewhere in that direction.’ She said, with a hint of sadness.
‘How far?’ Jack looked towards where she was pointing, the sky looked a little darker.
‘Very.’ She sighed and turned her attention back to in front of them. She wrapped the blanket a little tighter around her body and Jack instinctively shifted closer, putting his arm around her shoulders.
Jack hadn’t done that before, but it felt right and Ova didn’t mind, in fact she shifted so that she was leaning up against his chest. Jack didn’t risk anything else more forward, he wanted to though. He wanted to let his hand drift over her soft skin and make her sigh into his touch.
The entire week was spent with a heavy tension between them, Jack never stepped over the line, remembering what she’d said about relationships in her culture beginning with a sturdy foundation of trust. He didn’t dare do anything without her permission, but every time he thought he might have crossed a line, she only leaned into it. Maybe he was already there.
‘You excited for tomorrow?’ Jack asked, sipping his beer.
‘Yes.’ She said, quietly, seemingly enjoying the close proximity. ‘Very.’
‘Good. Carter can’t wait to show you how it all works and Teal’c… well, you know he’s… excited on the inside.’
Ova laughed and let her head rest on his shoulder. How had he not noticed how good she smelt before? It was a sweet mix of something he sort of recognised, combined with the smell of the museum she’d spent most of the day in.
‘So, what do you think of Earth so far?’
Ova inhaled deeply. ‘I think it’s beautiful.’ She spoke quietly and it made Jack’s heart skip a couple of beats. ‘I wish I could see more of it.’
‘Well, if you ever feel like coming back, I might be able to show you more.’ Jack distinctly felt her own breathing hitch and he was in two minds about whether to take advantage of it or not. ‘We have our own Mount Olympus, you know?’
‘Mm, Daniel told me.’ She was definitely tiring and Jack was a little upset that he wouldn’t get the whole night to talk to her.
‘We could go there next time?’ Jack offered. ‘It’s not sixty thousand feet or anything, but it’s still very impressive.’
Ova laughed, igniting him a little. She turned to see him and smiled, but something about staring into her eyes in such close proximity had her stilling. He was so close to her mouth, he could have kissed her, but he wasn’t sure if it was appropriate or even what she was indicating. He couldn’t mess it up. Jack cleared his throat, scanning his eyes over her face.
‘Is there…’ Jack cleared his throat again, feeling his whole body reacting to her gaze alone. ‘An Olympian custom I should be aware of here?’
‘No.’ She breathed. ‘If you want it, you should do it.’
She had no idea how much he wanted it.
Jack slowly slid his hand up her jaw and into her unimaginably soft hair. Her grey eyes that may as well have been black, fluttered closed at the mere touch. Jack lowered his mouth, grazing her full lips with his and hearing the softest sigh in existence. He pressed his lips a little harder and felt his body jolt with excitement.
He couldn’t resist kissing her deeper, with every move he made, he needed more, he wanted to drink all of her in. Jack was immediately addicted to her kisses, she tasted sweet like the dessert she’d eaten after dinner. Her hands drifting over his chest, gripping his jacket for support, he wished it wasn’t there, he wanted to feel her hands on his bare skin, he wanted her beneath him, pressed into him, above him, every which way she would allow him. He needed her.
Jack couldn’t help himself, he dragged his teeth over her bottom lip and heard a deep groan come from somewhere deep in her chest. He wanted to hear more, make more happen, but he was somewhat aware that he was still outside, and next to his empty pond wasn’t what he envisioned with Ova. He released her lip and breathed against her for a moment, his hand still deep in her hair.
For a while, they both remained close, their foreheads pressed together while they recovered. Jack could’ve sworn he heard her breathe a laugh at one point. He slowly opened his eyes to see her and she soon did the same, her dark eyes locked with his.
He smiled, still not saying anything, but he gently kissed her once more before they went inside where it was warmer.
Jack wasn’t sure why he’d stopped the kiss, she was clearly enjoying it and had no resistance to his advances. He wondered if he could have taken her to bed that night and shown her how he really felt.
They ascended the stairs to head to their respective rooms, Ova didn’t seem to be anticipating anything and Jack couldn’t help but smile at her for it.
‘What?’ She frowned, opening the door to her room.
‘Nothing.’ Jack still smiled. He slowly wandered closer to her and leaned on the wall next to her. There was so much he wanted to say, but no words would quite be enough to express what he was feeling.
Instead, Jack scanned every part of her pretty face, being unable to resist her light smile, he leaned down and once again pressed his mouth to hers. Her hands slid around his waist, making him stutter into his movements. His hands were suddenly in her hair, holding her against him as she became greedy for more.
Jack could feel her body pushing up to his, but he needed to know if he had her permission to do what he really wanted. She just tasted so good.
He pulled away just enough to ask her. ‘Ova-‘ he kissed her again. ‘You really-‘ another kiss. ‘Want this?’ He kissed her again, before pulling away enough for her to speak.
‘Please.’ It was a clear beg and there was no way Jack was passing up the opportunity.
Jack groaned, moving his hands down to hook beneath her legs, lifting her up to wrap her legs around his waist, he could feel her strength around him and a part of him was intimidated, the other part was excited. He felt the wall behind him as she pressed hungrier and hungrier kisses into him.
Jack was able to move enough to get them to his bedroom which thankfully wasn’t that far away. He kicked the door shut and lay her down on his bed.
He really didn’t want to stop kissing her, it felt like a lifeline, but his need to feel the rest of her skin against his mouth was starting to overwhelm him. Jack began kissing down her jaw and the first beautiful groan emerged from her mouth, he was addicted immediately, his hips pushing between her legs, pulling the second beautiful groan.
Jack descended down her neck, finding numerous points of sensitivity and attacking them with his mouth, tongue and teeth. He listened to the sounds that were the loudest and made mental notes to revisit those areas.
Ova’s hands ran over his body, feeling his shape and he wanted her to feel more of him, he wanted to feel more of her.
Jack ran his hands down her sides and over her legs, feeling how toned she was beneath her jeans and jumper. He ran his tongue up her neck, feeling her back arch as he captured her mouth in another searing kiss. He could feel her soft skin just above her jeans against the tips of his fingers.
Ova’s jaw dropped as the simple touch was enough to illicit another moan from her chest. It amazed him how easily she could feel pleasure from touch alone. He couldn’t wait to see what else he could make her do.
Jack slowly pushed her light jumper up and allowed his hand to roam the skin, he felt his hips rhythmically pushing against her and it was as much pleasure for him as it was for her. Ova panted hard between his kisses and Jack only allowed her moments to recover, before kissing her again and again.
He managed to push her jumper up enough that he could pull it off without her having to get up. Once he threw it to one side and looked down, he thought his heart might stop. God, she was so beautiful.
Jack groaned into another kiss, pushing his hips harder into her, before once again descending down her neck, but it wasn’t enough. Jack could feel her along the same line of thinking. He couldn’t help his smile as he got up on his knees, enough to take his t-shirt off and he was a little surprised when he saw that her eyes darting over his body, taking him in the same way he’d taken her in.
Ova’s eyes travelled down his bare chest, her fingers drifting over the skin, making his eyes close as he felt her softness cover his body. She felt his hips, his stomach, his chest, his shoulders. He felt her lips against his collarbone and his arms began weakening as he held himself above her.
Her lips consumed him in a way he’d never felt before, it was like warmth crashing over his body in waves, over and over again. Jack felt his chest heaving, gasping for breath as her mouth covered him.
Ova travelled up his neck, placing kisses, her tongue tickling his skin beautifully. ‘Jack.’ She breathed and it was his undoing.
Jack kissed her harshly, letting his bare chest press into hers, he could feel how warm she was, feeling her soft breasts against his chest. He didn’t hesitate, Jack descended all the way down her neck and tasted the soft skin over her breasts. He wrapped his mouth around her nipple, the moan that escaped in tandem with her hand in his hair and scratching down his back, was gloriously addictive.
Jack held her waist, moving his fingers to her jeans, slowly unfastening the button as he moved over her soft flesh, her sensitive skin igniting something more primal within him. He could hear his name on her lips, hear her begging for more.
He pulled her jeans down and ran his lips over the thin, sensitive skin that covered her hips.
‘Jack, yes.’ She panted. He pulled her jeans and underwear off the whole way and began kissing her inner thighs which were just as sensitive.
Jack glanced up to see her chest heaving breath into her lungs and he smiled at how beautiful she was laid out on his bed, ready for him, wanting him to go further, do more to her, for her.
His mind was a daze as he let his hands wrap around her toned thighs while his mouth worked towards her core. Jack ran his tongue over where he’d kissed, travelling closer and closer, before grazing his lips over her folds, teasingly, bringing out a stuttered laugh from her, before beginning on the other thigh and working his way up once again.
Ova sighed, panted, whispered encouragements, all of it was savoured, every moment banked in his mind, he wasn’t forgetting this any time soon. He was never going to forget the sounds she was making, the way her fingers delved into his hair, the way she felt around him, needing more.
Jack couldn’t resist any longer, he ran his tongue lightly over her soaked core and hummed, listening to her laugh a little as he tested her resolve. He was very confident that he could make her come undone quickly and was torn between going teasingly slow, and extracting as much pleasure as he could from her.
He decided he simply couldn’t wait to hear her come for him and began tracing every part of her, building her higher, worshipping her and soon she was there. Jack felt her convulse against his tongue, her moan of his name was heavenly and he needed to hear it again. The second it started to fade, he got greedy for more.
Jack gave her a moment to calm down, before trailing a line of soft kisses up her toned stomach. Suddenly she was bringing him up to kiss him deeply and passionately, tasting what he’d done to her. He was taken a back and for a moment, making Ova stopped.
‘Sorry.’ She panted, her voice stuttered. ‘Should I not have done that?’
‘No, you should.’ Jack suddenly croaked back. It was completely erotic and something Jack liked, but he’d found so few women who kissed him like that after going down on them. ‘You definitely should.’ He repeated, making her smile as he kissed her deeply once more. He groaned into her, needing more of what she was giving him.
Ova’s hands slid between them as she began unbuckling his belt and unzipping his trousers. He might have needed a minute before he could do anything, but it didn’t seem to stop her.
Jack helped her with taking them off completely. He stood up and threw both his trousers and briefs away, Ova looked up at him with a grin on her face that he enjoyed a lot.
She motioned for him to sit down and the second he did, she moved herself above him, her hands either side of his face, her darkened grey eyes piercing his. She was so beautiful. Jack slid his hands up her soft thighs, holding her hips just for a moment, before guiding her down around him.
Ova’s head fell backwards as he slowly slid inside her. Jack’s eyes fluttered shut at the feeling of her surrounding him. He wrapped his arms around her body, holding her form as close as he could for just a moment, panting hard.
Jack opened his eyes just enough to see out of his window, the moon shining through, the sky littered with stars and the knowledge that somewhere out there her people were waiting for her to rescue them. He felt like he was a part of that mission, her grief, her desire, her determination to finish what was started, it was his as well.
He could hear Ova’s stuttered breathing as she took in what he felt as well. For a moment they were and the same person, with the same needs and wants, the same mission.
Jack allowed her to move over him, her hips rolling over his and every time she did, a bolt of desire and weakness shot through his body. She was perfectly made to fit with him, perfectly made for him to worship and he never wanted to know anything else.
He helped her reach another climax, he was close himself, but he couldn’t let this be over so soon. Jack took a moment to calm down, breathing deeply while he watching her blissful face recover a little. He didn’t know if he had the restraint to do that again and not follow her over the edge.
He moved them both so he was back on top of her, bringing her leg up so that it wrapped around him, he held her hip with one hand and cradled her face with the other, looking deep into her eyes as he rolled his hips into her slowly.
Ova’s eyes never left his as they breathed together, making love to each other, knowing that this was all that mattered. Jack could feel himself getting close, he whispered her name, placing a light kiss to her lips as he picked up the pace.
He could feel her clenching around him and knew if he could just hold out a little longer then they would come together. Ova’s nails dug into his back and it only spurred him on to thrust harder into her, hear her moans and quiet ‘yes’ as he pushed himself deeper and deeper.
‘Ova.’ Jack groaned and felt her come around him once more. He kissed her hard and his thrusts became stuttered as he tried to make the high last as long as possible for them both.
He let his head drop to her shoulder as he tried to regain control of his breathing, he inhaled her scent with every breath and never felt like he was alone for a single second, not while she was there and not while they were still a part of each other.

ON REVERENCE ;
Tumblr media
while cameron does not consider himself religious,  while he would not profess to believe in god, he does believe,  in his own ways.  cameron struggles with anything that seems intangible,  anything abstract that has no bearing on his own life.  words two thousand years old definitely rank high on a list of ‘abstract things.’  cameron never sat through church sermons that did much to make the words mean much to him,  and frankly preaching about what should be done and about the consequences of failing to do so is a sure-fire way to lose him.  so, the church itself,  scripture,  everything about how cameron was taught to define ‘god’ or religion or belief fails on so many levels to resonate with him.
yet,  here’s a kid who approaches life and everything the universe has to offer with such reverence.  who can come through hell and step out the other side not afraid of losing everything he came so very close to losing,  but with a deeper appreciation for it than he can even realize himself.  he walks away from antarctica with no small dose recklessness — yet it’s not arrogance, it’s never a conviction that he can do anything with no consequences.  it’s instead a conviction that it’s worthwhile.  life and experiencing life and preserving life and protecting others and even this disaster of an world we live on is worth risk to himself.  sometimes his recklessness comes with an edge of it’ll be fun,  and other times it comes with it’s necessary to help others,  but no matter which it is,  it’s always from that place of reverence for life.
here’s a kid who can move mountains with his faith — in himself,  in his friends,  in humanity,  in the universe itself.  who never attributes his ability to accomplish what is fundamentally the improbable if not downright miraculous to any ability of his own.  yet, neither does he brush off what he has done.  there will never be a moment that he dismisses the monumental gift of his recovery after antarctica,  or ceases to appreciate the blessing that is having his team hale and whole once more.
he feels that appreciation — for the opportunities he has,  for everything in the universe about him — so strongly,  and finds even the smallest things to appreciate.  counting trips through the gate even when people think it’s ridiculous.  finding wonder in things that a team jaded after 8 years of gate travel would overlook in a heartbeat.  fighting holographic knights that soundly kick his ass?  honestly,  damn cool  ( even if he acts grumpy about getting his ass kicked ).  and then there’s the way he looks at his team,  and all that they are capable of,  the way that he values them so highly  ( could anyone be prouder of sam than he perpetually is?  I doubt it ),  the way that he wants so badly to remove obstacles from their paths so that they can be as successful as possible,  or to expand their own horizons  ( such as when he tries to get teal’c to move off base again ).
the point is,  this kid has so much reverence for life and for the universe.  and he never casts that as a religious devotion or a belief in a higher power,  but I think it’s his own form of worship.  perhaps not to the christian god,  but to something.

Chapter 7
At the SGC the next day Sam found herself too busy to focus too much on a certain General. In fact she had barely seen him. When she had seen him he was his normal snarky, self.
By Friday Sam had finished up most of her smaller on going projects. She then had been able to devote more of her time studying up on the Daedalus. “Hey Sam, whatcha doing?” Daniel asked as he and Teal’c walked into her lab.
“Hey guys, I was just going over the specifics of the new ship being built.” She continued telling them what she could about the Daedalus, leaving out the part about her transferring. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to tell them just yet, even though she was beyond excited for the experience. She had just finished when the phone rang, it was for Daniel. Sam watched him as he spoke, she could tell he was shaken. “What is it?” She asked.
“Catherine Langford died last night.”
Sam hadn’t known Catherine as well as Daniel had, but they had worked together years ago. Then there was the mission they went on to find her old fiancé. It saddened her to hear of her death.
“I’m so sorry Daniel, I know how close you two were.”
“Yeah, humm. If you could excuse me, I ah, I need to go talk to Jack.”
“Are you going to be alright?”
“Yeah, fine,” Daniel said as he left to find Jack.
Jack was in his office when Daniel knocked on the door, “Jack, do you have a minute?”
“Ehh” he looked at Daniel’s face and could tell it was important “Sure, what’s up?” He said closing the file he had been reading.
“It’s Catherine.”
“She alright?”
Daniel collapsed onto the little couch in Jack’s office “She’s dead Jack, last night.”
“Daniel…”
“I know, she wasn’t a blood relative, but Jack…”
“She was practically family. It’s fine Daniel. When’s the funeral?”
“Monday morning.”
“You have until Wednesday.”
“Thanks Jack,” Daniel sat looking at his hands, “She was the first person I called when I got back; like I almost always do after missions. I just talked to her last week. I never thought it would be the last time I talked to her, you know?”
“Daniel. I know you probably don’t want to hear this but, the woman lead an amazing life. None of what we do here would have been possible without her. Without her, there would be no Stargate program, and without a Stargate program there would be no… well you know.”
“No you.”
“Yeah, that. Look I just mean that Catherine touched a lot of lives even if she didn’t know it. I’m not going to pretend that I knew the woman well but I do owe her.”
“I know what you’re trying to do. Thank you Jack.”
“Think nothing of it. Hey, why don’t you come over tonight, we’ll invite Sam and Teal’c and have a little memorial thing for her.”
“I appreciate that Jack. What time?”
“Oh say, 7:00?”
“Deal, I’ll go tell Sam and Teal’c. Thanks again Jack.”
********
That night the four of them sat around Jack’s living room with boxes of takeout toasting to Catherine’s memory with Jack’s beer. Sam was upset about Catherine’s passing as well but felt odd about going to the funeral. She was glad Jack had arranged this little low key “memorial dinner”. They all needed it. After some time the focus switched to Jacob. Teal’c and Daniel were both sorry they hadn’t been around. However she assured them both that given their roles in recent events it would have hardly been expected for either one of them. Especially Daniel.
“At least you have the opportunity to be able to go to Catherine’s funeral. That’s what counts.” Sam said.
“You should all come. You all met her, and her husband. Why don’t we all go?” Daniel said. He was slurring his words slightly. Jack reached a long arm over and took his beer away from him. “Oh, I think that’s enough for you, Buddy.”
“You said yourself, you owed her, Jack.”
“That I did, but it doesn’t mean that I’m at liberty to drop everything and just go.”
“What about you two?” Daniel asked, looking to Teal’c and Sam for support. “I am sorry Daniel Jackson, I can not. I’m afraid I have a prior engagement I must see to.”
“Sam? Come on Sam.”
“Sam’s got a thing this weekend. Don’tcha Carter?” Jack supplied absently.
“General’s right. I have plans I can’t cancel, Sorry Daniel. I’m planning on sending flowers though and I’ve been thinking about making a donation to a foundation that supports scientific studies for girls.”
“Catherine would have loved that, Sam! Count me in!”
Jack and Teal’c also offered a modest sum to go towards the donation, which gave her the idea to put the word out around the SGC, unofficially of course, to see if anyone else would be interested. She would ask around Monday morning.
It was nearly midnight when Teal’c decided it was time to go. Teal’c and Daniel had driven together which worked out well because Daniel was in no condition to drive. Sam hung back on the pretense of helping Jack clean up. “You go on, make sure he gets settled in. I’ll probably just finish up here and head out.”
“Very well Colonel Carter. I shall see you on Monday then.”
“Night Teal’c! Daniel!”
“Night, Sam! Tell Jack thanks for everything.”
“You already thanked me Daniel. Six times.” Jack was both amused and annoyed “Good night you two!” Jack said as he closed the door behind them. Jack waited to make sure they left before he went back into the living room where Sam had already managed to get most of the mess cleaned up. “You don’t have to do all that.”
Sam shrugged one shoulder, “You can get the empties.”
“On it!”
Minutes later Jack asked “So, whatcha doing Sam?”
She held up a plastic shopping bag filled with trash and raised an eyebrow in answer.
“I ment where are you staying? Were you planning on staying here until after the hockey game or did you need to go home?”
“I’ve got an overnight bag in my trunk. I was kinda thinking maybe we could stay at my place after the game tomorrow. Maybe watch a movie.”
Jack smirked, “Sure, we can do that.”
In the end Jack would have been fine with Sam going to the funeral if she wanted. He’d find someone else to go to the hockey game with him, maybe Siler. But Sam was dead-set against changing their plans for the hockey game and they both wanted to spend as much time together as possible.
Ten minutes into the game and Sam had already decided it was a sport she might actually enjoy once she learned more about it. Fortunately, Jack was a good teacher. By the end of the game Sam felt like she had a fairly good handle on the game and most of the terminology. It was exceptionally thrilling when Jack’s team won.
Jack’s face split into a wide smile as the buzzer sounded with the winning goal. It was all he could do to stop himself from pulling Sam into a celebratory kiss. He was having trouble with the idea of showing too much affection in public aside from holding hands or a hug. It took Sam a moment to realize that it probably had more to do with him being such a private person more than anything else.
She had always respected Jack, and had loved him as she knew him for years. Now, the more time they spent together, the more they got to know each other on a personal level, the more she fell in love. There was so much more to the man than he let on at work and yet he was still a simple man. Ironically “Down-to-Earth”, for a former fighter pilot, Black-Ops, leader of SG-1, and the current commander of the SGC. She imagined that people who only knew him outside of the Air Force, might not ever really realize he was even in the Air Force if he didn’t mention it. But then the same could probably be said about her as well.
They decided to pick up Chinese food on the way back to Sam’s. Since the zoo and the hockey game were both Jack’s idea the rest of the night was Sam’s to dictate. Chinese food, ice cream and an old movie.
Jack sat down on the couch busying himself with the takeout containers as Sam went to get plates. “What do you want to drink?” She yelled from the kitchen.
“Ya have a beer?”
“Sure do,” Sam walked in moments later with plates and beer.
“So what movie are we watching?” He asked as he filled a plate with rice and orange chicken.
“The Court Jester” She eyed him for a moment testing his reaction.
She wasn’t really sure what movies he liked, except that he didn’t really care for Sifi. Jack didn’t even look up from what he was doing but nodded, “Classic, gotta love Danny Kaye,” he said before taking a big bite of food.
Sam gave a satisfied little smile as she prepared the movie and hit play. “So out of curiosity, what kind of movies do you like anyway?”
Jack shrugged “Don’t really watch them much. I read more than anything.”
“Pick a genre.”
“Ehh,” he sighed, “I guess I like a good mystery, some action, but it has to have some comedy, whatever it is. I’m not really a fan of anything too serious. Or sifi, it’s too much like work. I like to laugh. A classic like this is good but I wouldn’t want to watch musicals all the time. Variety is a good thing.” Jack took a big bite of chicken while the beginning credits started. “So did I pass the test?”
“Test?” He eyed her sideways, chewing his food. “Yeah alright. So maybe it was a little one.”
“And?” He grinned.
“It’s a reasonable answer, I can live with,” she smirked as she sat down next to him taking the plate he offered. As much as Sam enjoyed old movies she also liked a variety.
By the end of the movie Sam was laying with her head in Jack’s lap half asleep. Maybe she shouldn’t have picked a movie she’d seen twenty times or maybe it was just because of the late hour, either way she was exhausted. “That’s it Sammie, time for bed,” he sing-songed , patting her on the hip.
Sam sat up stretching “What time is it anyway?”
“Ahh, I’d say bedtime, humm almost 2:00”
“No wonder I’m tired.”
Jack had already started cleaning up their plates and the leftovers, “Not getting soft on me are ya, Carter?”
“No, Sir,” she yawned.
Jack chuckled, “I got this, Hun, you go get ready for bed.”
“You sure? I don’t mind cleaning up”
“Nah, you go, I’ll be along in a minute.”
Sam made her way back to her room, changed into a pair of blue and white sleep shorts and a t-shirt. Jack came in as she was brushing her teeth. “Ok… so I know it’s been a little while since I saw your room but wasn’t it different?”
“Humhum” she mumbled through a mouthful of toothpaste.
“When did you have time to do it?”
“It didn’t take that long. It’s just new bedding, a couple of lamps and a few odds and ends. I just went shopping one day after work. I wanted to paint but haven’t got to it.”
“Sam this is really nice in here,” he let out a little whistle.
“I thought it was time for a change,” Sam stifled another yawn. “I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. It was kinda fun.”
“Sprinklers huh?”
“What? Oh that, no. I think this has less to do with dad and more to do with just doing something for myself. Ok so maybe it had something to do with you and Pete, but mostly it was just for me.”
Jack gave her a skeptical look then shrugged one shoulder, “Well whatever the reason, I like it, it's very you. I’m digging the Air Force color scheme.”
Sam looked around at the dark blue quilt with the soft gray and white floral print and the little touches of blue she had added in various places. Okay… so maybe he had a point. However lots of people used blue, gray and white to decorate with. Oh well, she still loved the look.
Sam watched as Jack pulled his shirt off and stripped out of his jeans. “Where should I put these?” He asked.
“Over there is fine” she said, indicating a small blue decorative basket on the floor near her dresser. Jack finished getting ready for bed himself and followed Sam back into the bedroom. “I did have other plans for tonight but I’m just too tired.”
Jack let out a bark of laughter “Trust me, sleep is the only thing on my mind.”
“Maybe in the morning” she teased as she made herself comfortable. Jack curled in behind her holding her close “Could happen”.
A moment past “I thought you were too tired” Sam grumbled.
“I am. Just ignore it, that thing is always insubordinate.”
“If you say so” she murmured and promptly fell asleep grinning.
**********
About a week later, Jack Got in before anyone else per usual to find there was an unscheduled delivery truck waiting for approval to unload. Much to his surprise it was addressed to Daniel. After checking the shipment and verifying the address Jack allowed a group of his men to unload the truck. The last few crates had just been delivered when Daniel came in. Jack was waiting for him.
“Jack?”
“Daniel.”
“What’s goin on?”
“You been shopping online lately?”
“Whatcha talkin about?”
It was the delivery from Catherine’s estate and it was much larger than Daniel could have expected. His office was filled from top to bottom, it would take him forever to get through it all. Daniel was still trying to process what he was going to do with all of it when Jack excused himself, making a joke about stamp collecting.
Daniel spent the better part of the week going through the items from Catherine’s estate before he came across a particularly interesting crate. The most interesting thing about this case was that it contained a modern looking video camera as well as what was unmistakably a ZPM and a tablet Daniel was certain had been written just for him in a sort of code HE had developed himself.
He ran into the briefing room where Jack was clearly bored out of his skull by a group of geologists showing him rock samples. Daniel of course barely noticed them, pausing just long enough to apologize for the interruption before Jack latched onto his arm desperate to get out of there, grateful it was for a good reason.
Within a matter of minutes Danielle had the rest of SG-1 assembled in his little office and Sam was already getting the video hooked up to her laptop so they could watch it. It was clear from the video that they had in fact used the time machine in the Ancient craft, it was also clear that whatever they had done had been successful because the ZPM accompanied the rest of the shipment. The only detail Jack noticed out of place as he watched himself on the tape was when he said there was no fish in his pond. Which there most certainly were fish in his pond.
Really was there any reason to mention that one little detail? Risk his team all to get rid of the fish swimming in his pond? How could that be a bad thing? It meant that his pond was healthy enough to support life and heck, they had a ZPM. Why should he risk his neck just because his pond apparently didn’t have fish in the alternate timeline? Nope, no way he was gonna say a word.
Especially not when he had already made arrangements with Sam to leave on their vacation the next morning. Daniel and Teal’c would be joining them the following week. They were under the impression that Sam was going to surprise her brother with a visit and then meet up with them at the cabin later. It was a bold face lie of course however they had planned on telling the guys about their relationship and their transfers. The transfers that had already been processed. Sam’s at least would take effect before they returned from their trip. She was due to report only a few days after returning home. This trip would be the last trip they would go on together. Possibly ever, and Sam wanted to make sure it was a good one.
“Ok, I’ll get this up to the lab for analysis…” Sam said, moving to take the crate holding the ZPM. Jack quickly stepped in, practically ripping it from her. “No! I’ll take it. There’s a whole room of geeks just dying to get their hands on this. You got packing to do.” He said, looking her up and down. He couldn’t wait to get her up to his cabin, finally.
She was of course looking forward to having Jack to herself for a week. However, the idea of fishing in a pond devoid of fish did not seem all that appealing to her. She gave him an exasperated look. He was so excited about this trip, there was no way she would back out now.
***********
The drive up to Jack’s cabin was beautiful. Sam could already feel herself starting to relax. Even she had to admit that she really did need some time off to recharge. When they arrived she was surprised at how nice his cabin was. She didn’t really know what she had expected.
The more she thought about it the more she supposed she had been expecting more of a shack than the nice sized cabin she saw. In fact it could easily be a year-round home. “You mentioned before that the cabin had been in your family for years. Does somebody live here full-time?”
“Not for a long time. My grandparents lived here for years. I’ve been thinking I’d like to retire here. Apparently that won’t be happening anytime soon though. Here, let me take that.” He said taking the duffel bag she had slung over one shoulder. “Our room is in the back. Through the kitchen here. Teal’c and Daniel each get one of the small bedrooms. There’s just the one bathroom.”
“We’ve shared much worse accommodations, Jack. Is everything ok?”
“I’m just having second thoughts about telling the guys about us.”
Sam raised her eyebrows “Any particular reason?”
Jack shrugged a shoulder but didn’t answer. “Jack? I’m pretty sure they are going to figure it out when they see we’re sharing a room.”
“Yeah I know, I know,” he groused.
“Hey, this was all your idea O’Neill. Now snap out of it.”
“Yes, ma’am!” He grinned, pulling her close. She giggled “I can see where this is going.”
The first two days they didn’t leave the cabin, in fact they barely left the bedroom. “I kinda feel like we’re on our honeymoon” she teased him one night.
“Nah, we’ll go somewhere with sand for that” he had meant it as a joke but the look Sam gave him made him unsure. “I mean…”
“I’d love that Jack, I’m just not sure how to make this work yet alone, marriage.”
“Let’s not overthink it. Nothing good ever comes out of over-thinking.”
She leaned in for a kiss, “You’re right.”
The truth was that Jack was scared stiff about where their relationship was going to end up. All he knew for sure was that he loved her and that he’d never do anything to stand in the way of or jeopardize her career. Even if that meant losing her. “Jack, I love you.”
He let out a breath he hadn’t realized he had been holding, “I love you too.”
“How do you want to handle this?”
“Tell the guys, play it by ear. Keep things quiet until a time when we can be together permanently.”
“And if that never happens?”
“I’m retiring someday. Until then maybe keep things loose. I mean I don’t see me finding anyone to top you but I know I’m not that great of a catch. We both know you could do way better than me,” he tried to laugh.
“Don’t even joke about that. I need you in my life, whatever form that might take.”
“Will the Daedalus have the ability to send and receive private emails?”
“Yes, it should be set up already but if it isn’t then I can set it up to send e-mails along with the regular data bursts when the Daedalus connects with the SGC or Area 51 for regular reports.”
“Do it. Be prepared to get some interesting emails from me.”
“Oh boy” she laughed.
“Hey, I’d prefer what we have now over an email but even an email is better than nothing. I’ll take what I can get.”
“Ditto.”
After their talk Jack was able to relax considerably. “Want to go for a hike or take the canoe out?” He asked her on the third day after lunch.
“I haven’t been canoeing in years, I’d love to take it out.”
“Canoe it is then! Fishing or no fishing?”
“Pass for now, let’s wait for the guys for fishing.”
“I see what you’re doing there Carter, I’m watching you.”
She shot him an innocent smile as she pulled on her jeans and a comfortable sweater. Her waterproof hiking boots were next. They spent the rest of the day out on the water until they returned to shore to watch the sunset. It had been a beautiful, relaxing day. Nowhere to be, nothing to do except whatever they wanted. Sam couldn’t really remember the last time she had let herself relax like this. She was almost starting to feel like a new person.
Saturday morning Sam and Jack laid in bed curled up still naked from the night before; when the phone rang. Sam woke up with a start and fumbled for the cell phone barely opening her eyes. “Hello?”
“Oh ehh, hey Sam.”
“Hey Daniel, what’s up?”
“Oh nothing, I thought I dialed Jack’s number. Ahh anyway Teal’c and I just wanted to let Jack know we made it to the post office, according to his directions I think we should be there in about an hour. I guess I must have called your phone by mistake. Where are you anyway?”
Sam looked down at the phone in her hand, she had picked up Jack’s by accident. “Oh I already made it to the cabin” she said trying to sound natural. Which was getting more difficult since Jack had awoken and started kissing her exposed shoulder. “Daniel I’ve got to go, Jack needs my help with something inside. We’ll see you in about an hour.”
Daniel looked at the phone, checked the number he had just dialed, “That’s odd.”
“What is that Daniel Jackson?”
“I definitely called Jack’s phone but Sam answered.”
“Perhaps he was unavailable.”
“Ehh yeah, maybe.”
Sam hung up the phone and turned to Jack, “Well I guess it’s a good thing we already planned on telling them.”
“A lot can happen in an hour you know,” he grinned.
Forty-five minutes later Sam threw Jack’s boxers at him and made her way into the bathroom. By the time she had finished Jack was already halfway to the dock with two folding chairs and fishing gear in hand. Sam followed him out taking one of the chairs,“That was fun.”
“Yeah it was” he grinned.
They both sat quietly and cast their lines into the water, it was a beautiful morning.
“This is great.”
“I told you.”
“I can’t believe we didn’t do it years ago.”
“Yes well, let’s not dwell.”
They both reeled in their lines preparing for another cast when a fish breached the surface of the pond. They were both so distracted by it they barely heard Daniel and Teal’c come up behind them with a cooler. “Didn’t that tape say there were no fish in your pond?”
They turned to look at each other, “Close enough” Jack replied. He knew she didn’t really approve but there was nothing to be done about it now.
For the first time in a long time he had it all. He had the woman he loved, he had his friends, and he had his fish. Whatever the future held it couldn’t take this moment from them.
“Hey guys, you want a beer?” Daniel asked.
“I’ll take one, Jack isn’t allowed to have any” Sam smirked.
“Aww come on Sam, it’s close enough isn’t it?”
“It’s going to have to be now, but you have no idea how else it could have affected other things.”
“Sure I do, we’ll have fish for dinner, so, can I have a beer? Pretty please?”
“Ok fine! Daniel, you can give Jack a beer.”
Daniel was stunned by their odd behavior but did as he was told. “Thank you, Daniel” Jack gave a satisfied sigh “Personality I think it’s all working out fine.”
Sam couldn’t argue, the truth was that everything seemed just about perfect. “Did you guys have any trouble getting up here?”
“Ehh no, I tried to call earlier.”
“Oh yeah, Sam told me. I was still in bed.”
“You were still in bed so Sam answered your phone for you?”
“Well they were next to each other, it was an honest mistake, right Sammie” he gave her a fond look.
“Absolutely.”
“What’s going on here?”
Teal’c had been listening with interest, “I believe Daniel Jackson, that O’Neill and Colonel Carter are trying to tell us they have finally entered into a romantic relationship.”
Daniel’s eyebrows practically disappeared, “Huh?”
They proceed to fill their friends in on the events of the last several weeks. Glossing over the particulars of their relationship. Sam thought Daniel’s head might implode if he heard anything about their sex life. In fact they had decided to let them believe they had wanted until this trip before making their relationship “official”. Sam switched her pole to her other hand so she could reach for Jack’s hand “We don’t really know how things are going to work out. Jack is going to Washington and I’ve technically already been transferred.”
“That’s what the PowerPoint of the Daedalus was all about, you were trying to see what we would say.”
“Yeah, I didn’t want you two to be too surprised.”
“I will be returning to Ta’kara shortly. O’Neill will be leaving. It is only natural you should wish to go where your skills are most needed.”
“That’s what we figured too.”
“Honestly, the part that surprises me is that there is a loophole worked into the regulations specifically for this type of ehh, situation.”
“Yeah well there’s quite a bit more to it than that but it kinda surprised us too.”
“Had I known about it I might have said something a whole lot sooner. You know, like the day after taking over the SGC,” He smirked at Sam.
“Yes, well. Let’s not dwell” she returned the grin.
“Should Teal’c and I leave you two alone?”
“Nah, we’re good.”
“Gross…”
“Oh what? It’s not like we’re making out like teenagers, in front of you,” Jack complained.
“Yeah well if I hear you two going at it tonight, I’m sleeping outside.”
“Should be a hiking tent in the footlocker by the fireplace,” Jack said flatly, earning a swat on the arm from Sam.
“We’re not that loud!”
“Maybe not me.”
“Ahh, la la la la. This is like finding out your sister is sleeping with your best friend.”
“Indeed,” Teal’c agreed, “O’Neill, if you hurt Samantha Carter I will be forced to do you a great deal of harm.”
“Hey now, I thought we were supposed to be brothers here!”
“They like me more,” Sam grinned widely.
“Yeah well at least that’s something we can all agree on,” Jack said leaning over the side of his chair for a kiss which Sam gladly reciprocated.

01 x 01/02 - Children of the Gods
I guess since I haven’t seen the Stargate film for years, I completely forgot that Jack’s son died just before Jack went to Abydos, and that it was only a year before s1... the plot of the film is coming back to me, i.e. him going on a suicidal mission and Skaara saving him - but for some reason whenever I watched the show I thought it was longer
I really like how the pilot established all relationships - Jack&Sam, Jack&Daniel, Sam&Daniel
and that Teal’c just looked at Jack and was like, ok, I trust you lol (since I remember Moebius more than the pilot, I kinda thought there would be more talking, but there actually wasn’t...)
And I also really enjoy the whole Jack&Kawalsky friendship. It seems that my memory about early seasons is quite... not that good lol (I think I remember the fourth season the most), so it will be an interesting rewatch and I’ll probably find a lot of new things along the way, especially during these first episodes, and I also believe I’ll find new appreciations for characters and perhaps even episodes
I also forgot how many funny lines there are!

Stargate Characters as Pokemon - cause why not
Jack would be Arcanine, he is badass and loyal and sweet he is a bit of a cutie (bonus in the gif for clone Jack fighting next to him)
Tumblr media
Sam would be Umbreon, cause she is badass as hell, and she evolved through friendship.
Tumblr media
Teal’c is Ivysaur, he is a gentle giant but can hurt you if he wants to
Tumblr media
And finally Daniel Jackson started as Shinx who is cute but will spark you out if needed but throughout the series has evolved to being Luxio who is beautiful and holds his own - could kill you if he wants

remember that time in stargate sg-1 they went to a planet where there was a bad war on but the side they gated to was technologically advanced so they started being pal-ly with them especially jack because he wanted their tech and them as allies and daniel wasn’t happy. then jack ignored him and got pissy with daniel until the leader guy was racist to teal’c not because he’s a different race to humans but because his skin is black and jack went. oh shit no. and realized they’re all white people who practiced eugenics and started the war to wipe out the other side because they weren’t like them. and the bad side starts losing and the leader guy is like to jack ‘wait. take me with you. i’ll tell you all about my tech and whatever you want, don’t leave me here to die.’ and jack says ‘no. don’t follow through the stargate’ but he does anyway and jack knows it and when he follows jack orders the iris shut on him intentionally because he was a eugenics supporting racist war criminal and that he knew if he lived the US government would forgive all that and let him get off scot free as long as he told them about all the tech. and sam watches it happen and just stares at jack. because jack doesn’t feel bad at all, and it’s one of the few times you actually see his ruthless side, willing to kill to get the job done. i really like that episode.

Stargate Characters and The Nicknames I’d Give Them
And if they’d like them or loathe them.
Jack: Jack-Jack Attack because of the Pixar Short that came on the DVD for The Incredibles. I mean, he’s Jack and he attacks. I think he’d be a little confused at first but would then find it oddly endearing. I’d show him the Pixar Short and then I think he’d either really love it or wish I was never born.
Sam: I am calling this woman The Brain (Short for The Brains Of The Operation) because she has a brain the size of the fucking moon. I think she’d pretend to hate it but would appreciate as recognition of her abilities.
Daniel: Danger Dan because that man is in constant peril. Dude what the fuck is wrong with him. I think he would hate it but everyone else would think it’s hard as fuck. I would probably also inadvertently call him Dane when I’m annoyed because that’s my brother’s name and I often accidentally call people Dane when I’m irritated with them. Consequently, Daniel would be too confused to say anything until he figured out what was going on. After that, I think he’d laugh at me.
Teal’c: I would call him Toph cuz it sounds like tough. Again I don’t think he’d fully grasp why I’m calling him that but I think he’d find it endearing. I would show him who Toph is and he’d get confused until he saw her abilities and then he’d be like yo this is sick.
Cam: Cammy Coke-Bottles because I already have a friend I call Cammy Coke-Bottles because of his glasses prescription and I don’t think I could break the habit. (I promise you my irl friend a) thinks it’s funny and b) knows I am also not legally allowed to operate heavy machinery without my own coke-bottle glasses) I think Cam would find it really confusing at first but with context would be mad that he doesn’t even get his own nickname
Jonas: I am calling this man Nick or Kevin are you kidding me?? That would be hilarious. I would never call him Joe though cuz too many people would think I just shortened his name. I think with context Jonas would find it hilarious. Everyone on base would just think I’m going fucking senile especially since everyone else on the team is way too old to even have heard of the Jonas Brothers.
Hammond: I do not respect the authority of superiors so I would call him Papa Smurf. General Hammond would not like this nickname but would resign himself to it eventually. Everyone else would think I’m hard as fuck for having the gall to call the general by a nickname.
Vala: I would nickname her Linda after Linda Belcher. I genuinely think she would be Linda Belcher kin. I would not give her context at first because frankly I’d be scared of how she’d react but I think she’d just generally love being known as Linda without context. With context, she would be over the moon to be nicknamed after Linda.

If Only...
I’m not a man who overly enjoys change in his life, in his television, even less so. I can appreciate the need for it, and I even, on occasion, understand it, however, that doesn’t mean I have to accept it.
As a keen rewatcher of shows from my past, I often throw myself into a binge watching frenzy for one show or another. It was following one such binge-fest that I decided to put together this list, a list of shows that I believe could be resurrected for today’s market and still out perform many of the offerings on television today.
Feel free to let me know what you think, or even offer your own suggestions for shows that are missing from the list. Also, you may have guessed it, but I love Science Fiction.
Tumblr media
10. Futurama (1999-2013)
This beloved cartoon series will most likely feature on many lists like this one. It fought through several cancellation attempts before finally succumbing in 2013.
From the same creative mind as its sister show The Simpsons, many hoped that it would get a reprise one day but as yet it has not materiallized. Its stupid humour and outlandish tales made it one of my all-time favourites, this is why it’s on the list.
The show was closed off beautifully after seven seasons. The final episodes were beautifully written and the show was signed off with all the love and care it deserved. It’s for this reason that I don’t want it brought back. I know, I know, this is a list of shows I want brought back; Let me explain.
When a show reaches a natural conclusion and has been given enough time to explore the confines of its universe, it comes as less of a jolt when it’s finally time to say goodbye. That doesn’t mean that parting is any less sad.
So, if Matt Groening decided to write another season, I would welcome it, but the fact that he’s not only strengthens the beauty and genius of the episodes that us fans all know, love and can repeat verbatim. And if you don’t agree, you can “Kiss my shiny metal ass!”

9. Stargate... Maybe Universe? (2009-2011)
SGU was the third incarnation of the much loved Stargate Franchise. Three films and five television shows, comprising three mainstream, one web series and one animated, Stargate was one of the biggest franchises of the late 90′s early 00′s. If you’ve not seen it, “WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN”, but also, “that’s cool, it’s not for everyone”.
In summary, providing you can supply the correct coordinates of a remote destination, the ‘Stargate’ allows instantaneous travel from one gate to another. The gate network was created by an ancient race of beings, and throughout the various shows we learn that various Gods of old were in fact aliens who came to Earth either as benevolent beings or to enslave humanity.
Stargate SG1 and Atlantis were both, for the most part, cheap and cheerful. That’s not to say that the storylines didn’t have their darker plotlines with ethical or moral dilemma’s, but they were fun, enjoyable shows. The beloved characters became household names, and I can’t help but think of Teal’c everytime someone says “Indeed”.
Hand on heart, it felt as if the franchise was running on fumes when Stargate Universe was released. The darker, grittier concept of SGU felt like a drastic step from the previous shows and may have contributed to its demise. Now, however, I’m not so sure. Television has got darker over the last decade. Shows have had to portray more realism in their production and storyline. I can’t help but think that SGU was ten years too early, but maybe it’s not too late.
With a cast list including Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira and Ming-Na Wen, it has the star-power. The ending of the series saw the cast go into cryogenic sleep pods for a crossing between universes, who’s to say it didn’t take ten years? I say, dust off the cobwebs and bring us back a slice of Stargate we can get our teeth into.
There have been many rumours recently of a new reboot being released, which I’m not a huge fan of, especially with Stargate. With so many shows, movies, and games, the Stargate universe has already got a huge back story to draw from and a reboot would destroy so much of what came before it. An extension of the work laid out before, however, could be a great way to breathe fresh life and energy into this amazing franchise.
Tumblr media
8. Legend of the Seeker (2008-2010)
Based on the novels of Terry Goodkind and created by legendary director Sam Raimi, this show has the pedigree. This show can be likened to Hercules or Xena, but it didn’t reach a similar level of notority.
I have not read the novels, and I probably never will, but I enjoyed this show. At the time there weren’t many shows like it on television, so it filled my quota for Fantasy/Adventure quite nicely.
With a small cast of regular characters, it’s easy to pick your favourite and cheer them on from the sofa. It falls into the bracket of “Bubblegum for the Brain” television, but endlessly watchable. Although I’ll admit it is a little dated now, the only reason this one comes in at 8 rather than 10 is because this show was never really given the ending it deserved.
I suspect that resurrecting this show would be impossible now. With the high-budget, polished shows like Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, The Witcher, the new House of the Dragon and even the recently finished Outpost, Legend of the Seeker would find the fight for audiences too hard, however, I for one would welcome some lower budget, character driven fantasy shows like this one on our televisions.
Tumblr media
7. Space: Above and Beyond (1995-1996)
A cross between Battlestar and Starship Troopers, Space Above and Beyond is another show that was ahead of its time. The effects and production of such a series was too expensive to maintain in the 90′s, which inevitably led to the show being cancelled 4 seasons earlier than planned.
The show centres on a group of space pilots known as the Wildcards, these untested pilots, fresh out of training academies, are the last traces of the Earth’s navies in a defence against an little-known about race called the ‘Chigs’.
I grew up watching shows like Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica, so a show like this with epic(ish) space battles and cool planes doing death-defying manouvers was cool, I just wish it lasted longer. This is definitely a show that could do with a second chance, even on a lower profile network such as Sci-Fi, I reckon it could do well filling a void in the genre.
Tumblr media
6. Firefly (2002)
Firstly, 2002? Wow, it doesn’t feel that long ago does it? It especially doesn’t when you watch the show. The production value of this show alone should have kept it alive, not to mention the storylines, cast, acting, comedy, meloncholy, emotion and beauty that it contained.
Even if you’ve not seen this series, and I know there will be many who haven’t, you will recognise many of the faces from TV shows and film over the years following its cancellation. Not to mention the creator/director, Joss Whedon, who I know you will have heard of. If you haven’t, think Buffy, Angel, Avengers Assemble and you’ll get an idea of how big he has become.
Normally, when you consider a director as notable as Whedon, shows don’t get cancelled early, unfortunately, this was still early in his career and the power available to him was probably not as abundant as it would be today.
There has been a steady outcry from fans ever since 2002 to have it reinstated, and in 2005 we received the movie Serenity. Named after the “Firefly” class ship, Serenity caught up with our favourite hapless crew and saw them off on their last mission. It’s because of this movie that Firefly finds itself at #6 and not #1.
This show probably sits at #1 of many people’s ‘bring it back’ lists, but for me, the movie Serenity closed the door on most, if not all, loose ends from the show and gave it a fitting send off. As a result the available storylines from the series have been deminished significantly. If Serenity hadn’t been released, I would put this show as #0 or #-100, however, as it is, it was given closure by the movie, and although, I can imagine the cast coming back and reprising their roles aboard the Serenity, it may do more harm than good to my memory of Firefly.

5. Defiance (2013-2015)
Television shows that create a world you could see yourself living in are a beautiful thing. They captive your imagination and draw you in fully. They create neighbourhoods, similar, yet so vastly different from your own that it becomes hard not to yearn for them. Defiance did that for me.
At a time when distopian Earth seemed like the go-to for many television networks, we found ourselves in a futuristic St Louis, where we meet Joshua Nolan and his adopted daughter. This is the setting for the show, and more exactly, the town of Defiance. The Earth has been inhabited by seven new races, known as the Votan’s. Irisa, Nolan’s daughter, is also a Votan.
The series centres on Nolan as he tries to keep his daughter safe from the intrigue and back-stabbing politics rife in Defiance, as well as, over-bearing military organisations and her own mysterious destiny.
A show such as this has a great atmosphere. The town was built from shipping containers, so the large infrastructure is real. Sure, it’s still a film set, but it has an authencity to it. As a viewer you can really put yourself in the town and it makes you feel included; At least, I do.
The characters and acting was of a strong television standard, and personally both Nolan and Irisa are two of my favourite characters from any shows in this list. I found myself truly invested in their futures. The perils and decisions they had to make brought me concern and sympathy for both of them. When a show gets you that emotionally tied in, you just have praise the writers.
I always had the feeling that the creators tried to tidy up the loose ends in Defiance. I think they knew the end was coming and worked towards a resolution of sorts by the end of the third season; but rushed it. I never felt that it was truly ‘put to bed’ as it were. It may be too costly of an undertaking to recreate the Defiance sets now, but it’s doable, and certainly something I’d like to see.

4. EUREKA, A TOWN CALLED (2006-2012)
Since the show’s cancellation in 2012 I’ve watched it eight times, yes, that’s once a year, religiously.
Another in the line of ‘fictitious communities I want to live in’, Eureka portrayed a world of wonder, fun and unity. The town, Eureka, was home to some of the greatest minds. Working together, but individually, they were responsible for making the world a better place. However, as Jack Carter, the new Sheriff of Eureka found out, it wasn’t always plane sailing.
It is because of Jack Carter that I enjoy this show so much. Constantly derided for being not as intelligent as the residents, Jack never gives up; mostly never. He puts himself in harms way time and again to rescue the hapless scientists when their inventions go astray. There is a reason that he’s front and centre in the shows banner, because that’s exactly where Jack Carter stands in the show.
Eureka will never get you pondering the eternal questions of morallity or life, but it is a heartwarming, funny and often exciting show. For me, it inspired me to learn languages, take up electronics, and just invest in myself and my curiosities; and it still does. The premise for this show was ingenious, and it’s not something I believe to be out of the question to bring back. So much so, that this is only stopped from being higher on the list by the pure quality of the next three entrants.
Tumblr media
3. DARK MATTER (2015-2017)
From the legendary creator of the Stargate TV Franchise, Dark Matter was a brilliantly devised show, cancelled on a nightmare of cliffhanger.
Six crew wake from cryo-sleep with no memory of who they are or where they’ve come from. Each with their own demons chasing them we followed the crew of the Raza for three seasons before it’s untimely cancellation; Something I’ve come to expect from the SyFy network.
There was a deeply familiar atmosphere in Dark Matter, born from the creators influence. Whether it was the ship architecture or the actors appearing in cameos, reminders of Stargate could be seen throughout. This didn’t, however, diminish the show’s appeal, only added to it. Regardless of where the details came from, you knew you were in safe hands.
The cast were well established actors, and have since moved on to other great shows. Add this to the storylines, and the obvious future adventures the show had in store, it becomes very hard to see why SyFy made the choice they did. Unfoturnately, and very much like Joseph Mallozzi’s other show, SG-U, Dark Matter was left unfinished. However, unlike the former show, Dark Matter was left on a huge cliffhanger; One of the biggest I can recall from any show.
SyFy seem to like taking Space-faring shows and cancelling them early, with the current success of The Expanse, which they also cancelled in 2018 before bringing it back, they won’t want another science fiction, ship-based show on their books, but I’m nothing if not an optimist. I will keep hoping and praying to the television gods that a network somewhere will inject life into some of these forgotten gems, and I truly hope that Dark Matter is at the top of the list.
Tumblr media
2. TERRA NOVA (2011)
As unique show premises go, this must the uniqueiest of all unique premises, premisai... whatever, it’s unique.
Using a wormhole a group of explorers go back in time to the Cretaceous Period in order to start again, leaving behind the rapidly dying Earth of the 22nd century. If coming face to face with dinosaurs 85-million years in the past wasn’t tricky enough, the colony of Terra Nova must also battle against unseen forces whose only goal is to stripmine this new world for their own benefit.
This falls into my ‘Community’ band of shows, but also, who doesn’t love dinosaurs? I know I do. I know someone else, too; Steven Spielberg. It would be easy to assume that with such a name as Executive Producer this show would run for twenty years unimpeded, unfortunately, it only managed a single season.
Ratings were strong, and appeared to be ranked highly for many demographics, but it still got the boot. It’s hard for me to understand sometimes, I know TV is still a business, but with an average of 7.5 million viewers, I find it hard to see why something like this was canned so early. There was a rumour that Netflix would take it on, but that sadly never materialized. This is perhaps where Camp Cretaceous came from, and Netflix realised they could get what they wanted without the large pay out.
With the recent Jurrassic World movies it’s clear that dinosaurs sell, they always have and always will. This is why I’m so disappointed that nothing has been done with this show for a decade. I still hope that one day we see Terra Nova back on our screens as I believe this series had miles (or millions of years) left in the tank. Please unearth this fossil and give it life again!!
Tumblr media
1. SANCTUARY (2008-2011)
There is one thing I Google more often than any other, “Sanctuary Season Five”, alas, so far I have not received any good news.
Sanctuary was unapologetically cheap and cheerful, I hope the creators don’t mind me using that term, but I feel that if some of the greenscreen effects weren’t done in that way, we may not have gotten the four seasons we did.
The beautiful array of characters, pulled from all genres of literature, folklore, myth and legend, gave this show such a breadth of content unlike any show I’ve ever seen. The writers reinvented tales of old putting flesh to the characters we would only ever have seen in our own minds while leafing through a good book.
Jack the Ripper, Nikola Tesla and Dr. Watson are just a few of the legendary characters you get to meet, and not in the guise you may expect. Each with their own unique history and stories to tell. If you’re a fan of things that go bump in the night or howl at the moon, this show is for you.
As I said previously, it’s cheap and cheerful. I don’t believe the budget was ever too extensive for this show. As a concept first broadcast as webisodes, and bought by SyFy, I don’t think much was changed as far as the effects budget. That, in part, is why I would love this show to be given another shot, but properly. This show was beautifully written. The stories were rather intricate, but they were weaved in a way that brought nice closure, except for the ending.
As the final credits roll, you will find yourself screaming, “What happens next?” You’ll follow all your favourite characters on their ups and downs until all looks to be over, until our dear Dr Magnus pulls an ace out of her sleeve for the umpteenth time, only, we don’t get to see what happens.
Compared to many shows, the ending to Sanctuary is such that you can accept it, reluctantly. What gnaws at you, however, is what might the future hold. There is massive scope that could be explored in future seasons if only it was given the chance. It’s a show I’ve watched twenty or thirty times, and I expect it will always be on my playlist until the day I die. And, although many of the shows above could be switched back and forth, this one is exactly where it belongs.

Stargate rewatch: 1x15 Cor-ai
Tumblr media
Society of many hats! I love a society of many hats.
This world is interesting because the population are not enslaved by the Goa'uld, rather it's regularly raided for hosts. The implication being it's not under the dominion of any particular system lord, but set aside for the purpose of harvesting hosts by multiple Goa’uld - perhaps Kendra's planet was the same?
The language is a Latin and Greek derivation - likely that this society was originally founded by the Ancients?
This episode was written by Tom J Aste, and while it was his only Stargate effort, he would go on to write screenplays for the Get Smart remake, romcom Failure to Launch, and animated films Epic and Home.
Also notable as the final SG-1 episode directed by Mario Azzopardi, who loves nothing more than an overhead shot like the above.
Hanno is played by David McNally who will show up again in different roles later on, including on Atlantis. I think this is his best.
Tumblr media
Pretty impressive that Teal’c can actually remember killing Hanno’s father just by seeing his crutch - it happened at least ten years prior to the episode if not more, which implies it stuck with Teal’c.
“Only the person who has suffered understands the pain that has been inflicted. Who else could fairly say what the punishment must be?” I like the cultural differences explored in this episode. This viewpoint is anathema to Jack when the person being judged is his friend, although it’s one that he has more sympathy with when he’s the one upon whom the suffering has been inflicted.
“What I did while serving Apophis I will not hide from.” I wouldn't describe Teal'c as having a redemption arc in the show, but like Xena the cornerstone of his character is seeking to right the terrible wrongs he committed prior to the show. This underscores everything Teal'c does, and the character arc comes not from him seeking forgiveness or redemption, but rather a commitment to serve a greater good, although that is sometimes (as we'll see in later seasons) at odds with his personal desire for revenge.
This is something not only Teal’c will struggle with, but Jack and Daniel as well. Put a pin in this concept, we’ll revisit it later.
Tumblr media
This is a great episode not only for Teal’c, but for Jack as well. He projects a little on Teal’c given his own past in black ops, but we understand his pov in adhering to the chain of command and seeing Teal’c as the man he is now and not the man he once was. We also appreciate Teal’c’s perspective that he has victims in his past and those deeds aren’t washed away by the good he does now, and isn’t going to try and avoid retribution if it is demanded of him.
This is reflected ten years down the line in one of my favourite Teal’c moments of the entire show, when in Arc of Truth he tells Tomin: “Nothing I have done since turning against the Goa’uld will make up for the atrocities I once committed in their name…You will never forgive yourself. Accept it…Fight for others that may be saved through your effort. That is the least you can do.”
The least Teal’c can do, or at least he feels he can do in this episode, is refuse to run and accept whatever punishment Hanno decrees. The least Jack can do is everything in his power to prevent that from happening. We don’t often see Jack and Teal’c at odds, this is a fantastic scene.
Both RDA and Teal’c brought their A game this episode.

“Yeah, Teal’c helped kidnap my wife but totes feels bad about it now” is hardly the sterling defence Daniel and Jack seem to think it is.
“It was difficult for me at first, I wanted to hate him.” Huh, you wouldn’t know it from the second episode.
We get another insight from Arc of Truth reflected back here: “Others may try to convince you that they have forgiven you. That is more about them than you.” How much of Daniel forgiving Teal’c is necessity and how much is true friendship? The former that merges into the later as time goes on, but I wonder if a part of Daniel’s friendship, at this point, is predicated on Teal’c helping him in the search for Sha’re. He explicitly says he knows that Teal’c would do anything, even give up his own life, to help save her.
The dramatic irony apparent only on rewatch is that while it’s certainly true Teal’c would give up his own life for Sha’re’s, he’s not willing to give up Daniel’s life. And while Daniel does eventually forgive Teal’c for that too, it’s also true that forgiveness is more about Daniel than Teal’c.

This character is credited only as Byrsa Woman, but I really enjoy her, there’s a sweet fragility that underscores the precarious lives of the Byrsa. The actress is Tabitha St Germsin aka the voice of Rarity from My Little Pony!
Again I like the differing perspectives on justice and justification - for SG-1 Teal’c’s choice to kill Hanno’s father is mitigating, to kill one to save the rest, and kill the injured so during the next raid they all might get away. But for the Byrsa, who would not leave anyone behind when they flee, it’s even worse because he chose to kill the weakest and most helpless. Teal'c's morality revolves around doing the least evil and the greatest good, while for the Byrsa it's all or nothing - "we all go, or none of us do."
Hammond: “The United States is not in the business of interfering in other people’s affairs” Jack: 🤨 Sam: 🤨 Jack: “Since when, sir?” Iconic! Evergreen.
What is Teal’c’s legal status anyway? Refugee? Does he get a salary? Hammond does make a good point that Teal’c is essentially a war criminal, however hypocritical that stance in the grand tradition of Operation Paperclip.
All of this upright moral standing will be forgotten by the time of Stargate Atlantis when they’re war criming all over the Pegasus galaxy. Hell, it won’t even last until next season when the SGC (save our team) is hell bent exploiting indigenous land rights.
“I have spent a lot of years in the service of my country, and I have been ordered to do some damn distasteful things. I will not allow them to execute my friend.” I’m surprised this one got past the Airforce vett! Jack once again identifying with/projecting onto Teal’c.
Our old friend Shak’l from The Nox leads Apophis’s raiding party. What exactly does he need new hosts for so soon?
Tumblr media
Hanno tells a young boy that if he dies, to inform those remaining he still wants the sentence carried out - this boy then hands the knife to Teal’c to cut his bonds. Was the boy swayed by the team’s arguments or did he just see it as the best option? A nice touch either way.
And Shak’l gets Shank'ed, then Teal’c yeets himself across the room to take out another Jaffa, getting shot in the process.
Teal’c apologises as he stabs Shak’l - a reminder that this was once his protege, someone who he would have preferred to convert, not kill, but while the Jaffa pose a threat to others he has to make the hard choice, the lesser evil, as he did when he killed Hanno’s father. Except this time it is truly his choice, his own free will according to his own morality.
Hanno spares Teal’c by the same logic the team proposed - that Teal’c is not the same man, a neat way to give deference to the argument, but also retain the Byrsa sense of justice. He doesn’t forgive Teal’c for killing his father, instead he reframes it that Teal’c killed the Jaffa who killed his father.
SG-1 offers their help, which Hanno accepts, and they become one of the many alliances relegated to offscreenville.
Tumblr media
Teal’c gets a shoulder pat!
Nicely played moment by Judge - relieved but overwhelmed, he does so much by doing so little.
This is an underrated episode! The first to really focus on Teal'c, and there's some great character development for him and his relationship with Jack and the team.
