Touhou Genso Wanderer: FORESIGHT announced for PC
From Gematsu
Tumblr media
Publisher Phoenixx and developer Aqua Style have announced Touhou Genso Wanderer: FORESIGHT, the next entry in the Touhou Project fan game dungeon crawler RPG series. It will launch for PC via Steam on May 15.
“Touhou Genso Wanderer: FORESIGHT returns to its roots thanks to a straightforward dungeon crawl experience with tons of depth,” said Aqua Style head JYUNYA in a press release. “The story is as compelling as the gameplay, and it’s been a pleasure to work with the various artists, musicians and developers who have made this game a possibility.”
Here is an overview of the game, via Phoenixx:
After defeat in battle, Reimu Hakurei has fallen unconscious, waking in the pillaged Hakurei Shrine with no recollection of recent events. With the help of Touhou heroine Marisa Kirisame, embark on a quest to piece together the mystery lost to memory, and save Gensokyo from destruction at the hands of an unknown enemy. Defend Gensokyo alongside one of over 60 Touhou characters, each with their own distinct attributes. Dive into dungeons in search of supplies to rebuild the Hakurei Shrine to its former glory, collecting weapons, usable items, and 20 different spells along the way. Confront a cadre of diverse enemies including fairies, vampires, and supernatural shapeshifters that lie in wait during every dungeon dive. Strategically position the team to unleash melee strikes or ranged Danmaku attacks, and equip special spells that can deal damage across the entire screen. Ration rice balls and green tea to teammates to manage mana supplies, and keep an eye on Reimu’s stamina levels — she’ll receive damage over time when her levels reach zero. Advance through dungeons enacting spells to illuminate unexplored map tiles, or risk triggering traps that stun, cause blindness, spread poison among team members, or even disarm equipped gear. As a Touhou Project fan game title, enjoy a full-fledged Touhou experience with a star-studded voice cast and background music by Tatsuyuki Toyota (soundtrack, Super Robot Wars DD, Super Robot Wars 30).
And here is the Steam page description:
About

Having regained consciousness, Reimu sets out together with her friend Marisa Kirisame to solve incidents. Reimu must now save Gensokyo… From the various incidents, some of which she’d already solved before. —Reimu has no idea what she’s in for.

You’ll also be able to fast travel to places you’ve already traversed.

Her garden ruined, Grim using her garden as bathroom, girls that make Dante uncomfortable, girls flirting with Dante, people who don't give it their all, people defacing the gym, Jack doing his 'brat act', toxic romances.
Too spicy food, being left out on a joke, being told she's 'too innocent', being babied.

Have you posted any Adam Francis headcanons yet? I'd love to know about your take on the Dbd Wondernerd. :)
I’m sure I have, but the tag system on mobile is a bitch. ✊😔
I never quite know how to answer these, because I include so much of my thoughts when I write already. Hard to think of things not already covered. Uhhh. I think he goes on to be a successful author, and truly enjoys it. Enjoys speaking at conferences, and giving advice to young writers too.
I think he’s very socially adept and gets along easily, and keeps a cool head more easily than most of the other survivors. Good at rolling with the punches.
I think he’s much funnier than people expect or give him credit for.
Has good fashion sense, but sometimes completely ignores it and looks ridiculous on purpose, especially if going somewhere with Ace (solidarity).
Jake (and quickly, Dwight) are first to pick up on a specific part of his sense of humor being that he acts straight laced but would do all kinds of goofy things with the squad ‘for the bit’ and can be prompted to with a quiet (‘…for the bit’.) Jake and he do this to each other in secret because if Meg found out it’s a thing it would never end.
Not great in a fist fight, but amazing aim (obviously) and one of the more proficient with blunt melee weapons.
Thinks it’s funny Ace calls him ‘Professor’ not because he actually was one, but bc when they met the way he was dressed looked to Ace like the Professor from Gilligan’s Island, and likes to tell that story (and is the kind of person who really enjoys that kind of story).
Knocked a man out with his laptop once and the laptop made it.
Some kind of demi-grey but potentially likes all kinds if they register high enough on the amazing scale. Definitely has had an interest at least 3 survivors at some point. It’s just usually not the focus amidst. Well. Everything but also him as a person.
The kind of person who has a huge collection of teas and can actually tell them apart by taste without looking and gets really excited and enthusiastic about different ways of brewing and new teapots. Collects mugs so everyone gets to go wild picking out some of the coolest ones you ever saw for him.
Gets people to start a book club with him post-realm, but instead of reading the same book, everyone reads a different one and then meets up to one at a time go bonkers (positive or negative) about the book they’re reading to everyone else. No firm rules. Meg Thomas showed up week 1 with a Silver Age Spider-Man compendium. Jane brought her own book as a joke and got trapped having to actually comment on it because everyone Yes, And’d her joke so hard. They all really enjoy it, but the meetings last longer than a d&d meet.
Also have this gif I made as a joke about him misusing his rock ability to throw rocks at killers like a god years ago for free as a bonus:

A Collection of Headcanons - Sparring Edition! (Part 1 of 2)
Overview of the Win-Lose Ratio
Zhongli - 1:0 (read: one to zero)
Childe - 5:3 (wins more than he loses by a large margin)
Diluc - 8:7 (wins more than he loses by not as much of a margin)
Beidou - 1:1 (wins and loses a proportionally equal amount)
Arataki Itto - 2:3 (loses more than he wins by a large margin)
More under the cut!
Zhongli
There was one incident where the other four did try to fight him all at once, but after they couldn't get up by themselves, Zhongli simply told them that it wasn't fair to begin with.
Not because it was four-to-one, but because it would have to be about fifty-to-one for them to have a chance.
Naturally, that ratio is 1-0.
So Zhongli doesn't spar for the simple reason of the fact that even if he went easy on them, he'd beat them all anyway.
"As much as I would enjoy throwing myself at you all and taking delight in your bodies scattering like chaff in the wind, I am freshly retired. I would much rather enjoy the pleasant calm and peace of mind that comes with drinking a cup of osmanthus tea instead."
Childe
Childe treats the spars like a competition as well as opportunities to push himself, and as such he unsurprisingly has the broadest win-lose ratio among everyone else.
A definitive part about his fighting style is that he loves being up close and personal with whoever he's fighting for the thrill of it. Melee most certainly suits him best in that regard.
He enjoys testing himself by using all the weapons he's mastered over the years against his sparring partners.
Sometimes he'll be using just a polearm and on other days, he'll be dual-wielding blades while also throwing projectiles at his opponents.
He treats his wins and losses as improvement and critique so that he can ultimately become better, often implementing them mid-spar to test them out.
Beidou
Beidou is usually the one asking for spars. She can't afford to lose her edge given her profession and it helps that she finds it fun and refreshing.
While Beidou may not be as specialized as her companions and her (assumed) injured eye is some semblance of a disadvantage, she makes up for it with hardened experience and practical application.
She is the first reason why using Visions is banned because apparently, her full-counter does damage beyond the person on the receiving end doing five seconds of airtime.
I think her fighting style is based on hard and heavy hits that are meant to end the fight quickly, as the disadvantage of being blind on one side would become noticeable after a minute or two.
She uses the spars with them as a way to try and figure out how to properly compensate for her eye, as just swinging a big sword around in a limited radius can only do so much.
Diluc
Diluc treats these spars as transactional first, but it very quickly becomes one of his favorite things to do with the others as he considers himself fairly good at it.
His fighting style is versatile as he has demonstrated, agility, strength, and adaptability in the past, but the claymore that he wields would serve as cumbersome against some opponents.
As he has seen a lot more in his life than most others and does vigilantism on the side, he would have a healthy amount of training as well as experience, influencing how he fights them specifically.
Dare I say, he gets a little too into it sometimes, which is why he is the second reason why the use of Visions in the spars as he and everyone in the vicinity had a tendency to burst into flame.
Every loss and concession in his mind's eye is a lesson to be learned and then properly executed on whatever vagabond is on his to-hit list on his nights of patrol.
Arataki Itto
When I say that this dude has the potential to match up with them and even excel them in some instances, I am deadly serious; it'll just take him a little while to get there.
His fighting style is very much 'I hit it until it stops moving' with a combination of 'I'll power my way through it until I collapse' and it works about 60% of the time.
When it comes to more experienced, specialized, and disciplined opponents, though, that 60% becomes a 5%.
His strength is a boon when it comes to critical weaknesses and flaws in his approach, but like I stated before, raw and brute force can only do so much.
His goal is relatively simple: beat all of them soundly and without room for any compromise or debate. If he can do that, he'll be the best, and goddamn it, he is the best (in his mind at least).

Hirata Sasori - did Rukia ever invite her to tea as she resolved to do during her makeup training with Yumichika? How is the 11th enabling her love of sharp things? Does she have a collection of sharp things? Potentially funny/horrifying if it can be included: how much is Byakuya aware of her and what sorts of opinions does he have of her and/or her sharp things?
(for those who don’t obsessively read my fanfic, Hirata Sasori is one of my bit characters; she’s a noble friend of Rukia’s, whom Rukia “accidentally” helped join the Eleventh against her parents wishes. She tends to show up in crowds when I write Kuchiki party scenes. She’s built like a fridge, but is very femme and when she turns up, her hair/make-up/clothes game is 💯. I have never quite come out and said it, but she and Rukia definitely used to make out in the hedge maze when they were younger)
Hirata had a few scattered mentions throughout What We Do with Our Hearts, actually! She and Rukia socialize quite a bit, in part because they are friends, because it helps checks the box of Good Noble Daughter Who Has a Full Social Schedule and Maintains Relations with Other Houses, and I’m sure they found some time to hang out (I would also believe that Rukia took Hirata for coffee, because Hirata seems like a person who would enjoy coffee)
Life at the Eleventh has actually restricted the number of sharp objects Hirata usually has at her disposal. She comes from a branch of the Kasumiohji clan, the family from the Captain Amagai filler arc who produce high-quality (occasionally magical) weaponry. Prior to joining Squad 11, Hirata was a generalist who prided herself on being able to fight with every weapon her family produces. Although her father is kind of overbearing and limited her activities significantly, she did a lot of teaching and training other people, and giving her opinion on prototypes.
As (I imagine) sometimes happens with people who are already Fighting Professionals who join the Gotei mid-career, her zanpakutou spoke to her right away. It’s a naginata, a perfectly good Squad 11 melee-type, where her special attacks are like, “hit, but with knockback” or “hit, but with extra damage.” It’s honestly pretty disorienting for her to have to work on deep-diving with one specific weapon, but she’s doing a lot of personal growth, too, on the person she never got to be at home. She’s also very good at using her zanpakutou in its sealed, katana form, and switching up between sealed and shikai forms depending on whether she needs reach or mobility more. She also always has at least six knives of varying size on her person at any given time.
Being both highly educated, experienced at business, and good at teaching, she got promoted to Sixth Seat right away. Even though she and Renji are pretty different people, she somehow fills the weird ecological niche that he carved out in the Eleventh, the person who approaches training from an orderly, almost nerd-like perspective, who values taking care of their body so that they will be able in inflict increasingly horrifying amounts of damage to it, who takes a lot of joy in helping their subordinates reach their potential, and who is absolutely deadly with a tube of eye liner.
Byakuya knows her on sight and knows that she is friends with Rukia, but he’s never exchanged more than pleasantries with her. Now, if you were to ask one of the Kuchiki Aunts their opinion on Hirata, they would say, “oh, that girl is so improper! Caring about weapons! Uninterested in attracting men! A terrible influence on Our Rukia!” Byakuya is more like, “she has a good last name and dresses properly and could pass even a really hard etiquette quiz, 👍👍, A+++, good friend for Rukia.” Rukia even told him that she joined the Gotei (but not which squad), which raised his estimation of her even more. There was a bit at the very end of Hearts where Byakuya sees her chatting with his impressionable teen cousin at a party and thinks to himself “ah, yes, what a good influence, this is Good, Actually.”
Yeah.

(Nintendo/ps4/ps5 etc) - Graphics settings - resolution and screen type. - Save when you want. - Controls - automate button tapping option. - Four save slots. - It all plays out in a 2D perspective. - Fast loading times. - The gameplay is a mix of free-form fishing for ingredients and restaurant management. - Big bright color palette. - Cutesy pixel art animations. - Equipment load out - harpoon gun, harpoon tip, melee weapon, two items, gun, and two charms. - Your mobile phone is used for calling, texting, and using various apps for weather and mini-games along with where you deal with mission management and what mission shows on screen. - A lot of fun to play. - Tutorial pop-ups as you play. - You have a limited amount of air (which you can resupply with at points in a dive spot) before you get a game over. - A game over lets you keep one item of the scavenged items. - It's not just fish you get underwater, there are fauna, plants, and items. - End of dive/game over breakdown sheet showing dive number, date, weather, time, and what you caught and obtained. - Different weather and day/night cycle. - You can skip time forward when on the boat. - A lot of humor throughout. - You will have a lot of missions running at one time. - Add contacts and ring them when you like above water. - Find items to get new items and equipment crafted. - Return to the surface either by getting up to the level or finding an escape pod. - Mission items/fish will have a marker over their head to make it easier. - Cool animated cutscenes. - Duff's weapon shop app is where you craft new weapons, and find blueprints to unlock new options. - The restaurant part of the game is where you play mini-games to serve customers tea, the chef cooks the orders and you have to serve them in time to earn cash but also bonus cash. - You can run in the restaurant but you do have a stamina bar and it can increase the chances of you dropping plates. - End of the restaurant day breakdown showing what you served, ratings of serving tunes, etc. - Before opening the restaurant you select what items to put on the menu, you unlock new meals and each has rarity levels that increase their worth. - Full 3D backdrop making the diving feel like you are in a really cool-looking fish tank. - Memorable characters. - Each dive feels satisfying. - You do get predators underwater that require a gun to shoot them away. - The Idiver app lets you upgrade parts of your diving suit to increase air and depth. - Speed boost underwater uses up the air quickly. - The game has a good fluid flow to it all and you always feel like you know what to do. - The music player in the game comes up like Spotify or Apple Music and lets you pick what to play. - Find underwater caches for upgrades/blueprints. - Encumberunce is in the game so going a bit over your limit slows you down then each time you add more items you get slower and slower then eventually you cannot pick up anything. - You have set missions but you can freely do what you want underwater and explore how you want. - The game has a high-risk and reward system. - Marinca is an app that gives you a card of the fish you catch giving it a Pokemon style Collectibles. - Gets very addictive. - The ocean layout randomizes every dive. - Absolute time killer. - The interior tab in the restaurant lets you change the appearance of your restaurant. - The Cooksta app is what brings in new customers and eventually unlocks new foods and meals. - You can sell fish from the restaurant's storage box. - Interior options - table, chairs, ceiling, speaker, lighting, and four deco slots. - You can pet the cat in the restaurant. - Research is where you learn what a customer wants and will reward you. - Artisans' flames are earned in the restaurant and are used to research new menu items. - Cooksta will have comment pop-ups of the service and you earn likes for new items. - The Cooksta app is fully functional where you can view and like posts along with notifications. - Find items like air capsules to replenish air. - The game is doing a lot of fun collaborations that help enrich the game world. Dave The Diver Review Cons: - Minimal graphics settings. - Cannot rebind controls. - The aiming of the gun takes a bit of getting used to as it all works on a semi-circle arc aim. - Takes a bit of getting used to the flow of the game especially diving as you have limitations from depth to air management. - The game's color palette can hinder you in terms of seeing what is on your screen and what is in the fore/background and being able to see hazards/fish. - A slow starter as you wait for apps to unlock and upgrades to start rolling in. Weekend Top Ten #559
Top Ten British Games
God save the King, yeah? Now, I’m not the most patriotic person you’ll ever meet. But there is one thing I thing the British are good at – what is, in the long history of our weird, splintered isle, is our single greatest export – and that is our culture. I don’t mean, y’know, tea and biccies, football or cricket, stiff upper lip kind of culture. No, I mean our cultural output. You could go back to legends of Arthur or Beowulf, then Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens; Beatrix Potter, the Beatles, Bowie, Billy Connolly; Python, Attenborough, Doctor Who, James Bond, and Harry Potter. A vast collection of world-dominating writers, artists, and musicians who have inspired and influenced probably billions of people. Even big American things like Star Wars, the Muppets, or the Alien franchise owe a huge cultural debt to the many Brits who worked on them.
And one of the big, big cultural things which we’re very good at exporting is videogames. Gaming is literally – economically – one of our biggest exports. We’ve been at the forefront of the industry since at least the 1980s, shaping the medium both with hardware (Spectrum FTW!) and software (Dizzy!). So many of the biggest and most lucrative franchises in the world owe Britain a cultural debt – most significantly, I’d say, being Grand Theft Auto and its developer Rockstar. GTA – and specifically Scotland’s Rockstar North – emerged from DMA Design, responsible for Lemmings. Big nineties developers such as Rare, Bullfrog, Core and others splintered, evolved, and spawned so many other developers and game franchises; big companies like Microsoft and Sony snapped them up, made them flagship brands in the ongoing console wars.
Yes, mascots like Mario and Sonic are Japanese; Halo, Doom, and the like are American icons. But as a small nation full of wry, dry weirdos, I think we’ve historically punched above our weight. And, basically, made a ton of great games. And these are my favourites.
Tumblr media
Fable II (Lionhead, 2008): I’m a fan of open, accessible RPGs that allow for a great deal of player freedom and customisation, and this is just perfect. Its simple three-button combat system – magic, melee, or ranged weaponry – combined with its incredibly simple design makes just moving through the world and playing an absolute joy. Combined with this is its truly hilarious, incredibly British, Pythonesque take on a fantasy world; and beyond that, its incredible cast, from Stephen Fry to Simon Pegg. My favourite Xbox 360 game.
Perfect Dark (Rare, 2000): only just edging out GoldenEye 007 – if you want, assume it’s both of them occupying this space. GoldenEye has, I’d argue, the slightly better single-player campaign; a bit more streamlined, the nineties spy aesthetic preferable (to me) than the sci-fi trappings of Dark. But Dark remains the single greatest, most enjoyable multiplayer experience I’ve had; from supremely customisable deathmatch modes featuring bots, to its groundbreaking “Counter Op” mode where one player assumes control of the bad guys in the campaign. Funnily enough, like Fable, it’s due an imminent Xbox remake.
Lemmings 2: The Tribes (DMA Design, 1992): the Lemmings games are revolutionary puzzlers, combining tricky problem-solving with decidedly cute characterisation and animation (despite – or maybe because of – the tiny pixel-count). Gorgeous, inventive, and also full of gratuitous violence; what more could you want? Lemmings 2 is the answer, a game that expands and improves on its predecessor. The “tribes” structure allows you to play twelve different campaigns, with distinct graphics and their own move set, making it more accessible and interesting. New modes, such as practice levels, likewise offer new options to play. Basically it’s a perfect sequel. I just wish it’d get a glorious HD remaster.
Crackdown (Realtime Worlds, 2007): I’m gonna level with ya, I’ve never really gotten on with the 3D Grand Theft Autos (Grand Thefts Auto?). I’m sure if I had a PS2 twenty years ago I’d have gotten into it, but by the time I really came to them they just felt too expansive, too serious, too “straight”. Crackdown, on the other hand, embraced the freedom of a fictional city, positing you as a super-cop tackling gangs in a decidedly OTT manner. The roof-jumping gameplay is just a sheer joy, one of the first games to really make you feel like a superhero. The open structure extends to the ability to tackle the game in any order. And it’s really forgiving, with death nothing but a momentary annoyance. It’s so good, in fact, that they’ve basically never been able to recapture the lightning. Which is a huge shame.
Medieval II: Total War (Creative Assembly, 2006): I really like the turn-based strategy of the Civilization games; in fact, it’s probably my favourite game series. But whereas those games take a zoomed-out macro view of human history, sometimes it’s nice to get stuck into the nitty-gritty, and that’s where Total War comes in. For me, the game is one of development and nuance as you slowly build your empire across a map of the world (or, here, Europe and Asia); the 3D battles, though engaging, are the least of it. And that’s probably why, despite dipping into some of the later titles, I still prefer Medieval; I feel I’m crafting my dynasty the way I want. Plus the age of feudal kings feels more suited to that kind of empire-building. I’d love a Medieval III, but even more so I’d love a console version. Please?
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (TT Games, 2022): oh man, where to begin with this, one of the most supremely joyful game series of all time? And which one game to pick? I’m not joking when I say that the most fun I had in the previous console generation was playing Lego Marvel Super Heroes on the Xbox One; it was, basically, the first game my kids ever played properly. Just joy in playing as beloved characters, the jokes and funny spins TT Games puts on the franchises they adapt; the replay factor of the levels and the accessibility of Lego itself. I love it so, so much. All in all, despite some disappointingly thin aspects of the campaign, I think the latest version is the best, distilling so much of what made the series great but improving the gameplay tremendously and updating it for the future. Plus it’s got Mando and Grogu, what more do you want?
Batman: Arkham City (Rocksteady, 2011): so sad to be talking about this after the tragic passing of Batman himself, Kevin Conroy; having him and Mark Hamill reprise their iconic roles added a level of gravitas and heft to this trilogy. Out of the three, I think this middle part is my favourite; something which oddly makes it feel like a classic superhero movie saga. But despite Arkham Asylum’s gloriously pared-down map – giving each arena a sense of depth and flair in its construction – here you had a good portion of the city given to you, enough to make you feel like Batman in Gotham but not too much to burden you with choices or unpick the tense, taught feeling of being hemmed in. Arkham Knight added, for me, too many side-quests, too much faffing about with tanks and robots; give me predator takedowns and locked rooms any day.
Forza Horizon 5 (Playground Games, 2021): a bit like Skywalker Saga, this is another one where I’m struggling to find which particular game best encapsulates a superlative series. I’ve focused on the latest one, because it arguably smooths and streamlines the tenets of the franchise, and it’s the prettiest to boot. A sprawling, scenic tour of spectacular sun-kissed landscapes (and Edinburgh), it perfectly marries a gloriously fun arcade racer with a sense of wide exploration and even adventure. Like other games on this list, I appreciate it for being very open and accessible, with lots of options for even crap players like me to enjoy themselves, whilst also providing plenty of challenges for people who are, y’know, good. Honourable mention, too, for that other venerable Xbox racing series, Project Gotham, which I also adore, but I didn’t really want two broadly-similar franchises in the list. So think of Gotham whilst you’re reading this.
Sensible World of Soccer (Sensible Software, 1994): I’m not a big football fan really, but the arcade stylings of early-nineties footie games was always appealing (before FIFA took over, really). Sensi’s combination of charming big-headed zoomed-out graphics, tight, responsive gameplay, and above all a thoroughly British sense of humour made it the king. SWOS is a hell of a sequel, expanding the game to an almost ridiculous degree, offering management options that felt pretty in-depth way back when, and loads of different game modes. My biggest enjoyment will always be creating leagues of custom teams, however. Gotham City Villains versus Ghostbusters FC, anyone?
Worms W.M.D. (Team 17, 2016): once again I have to ask myself, which version of a beloved franchise represents the whole? Well, after much deliberation I think this – probably the most recent iteration I’ve played – fits the bill for Worms, a game series I’ve massively enjoyed since the Total Wormage demo that came on a cover disk with an Amiga magazine in the mid-nineties. Again we have another common factor: humour. These games are funny, silly, and very British about it. Very Beano, very Python; daft wordplay, toilet humour, and gentle fun-poking of British tropes and traditions (how many games give your characters Yorkshire accents as an option?). And – and! – the gameplay remains strong, with a great physics simulation that means your skill and choices matter. So even if, on balance, W.M.D. is probably the best iteration of Worms, let’s face it; the good bits were there from the start. Get under that.
No adventure games, no Peter Molyneux strategy games, and no Lara Croft! What was I thinking?!

Sneak Peek! Silver Summer
Max Verstappen x Reader
Tumblr media
You weren’t entirely sure how you’d gotten roped into picking up the new counselor from the airport instead of being able to head straight to camp but here you were, pulling up the arrivals area and scanning the crowd of people milling around for a face you didn’t even know.
Leave it to Dan to dump something like this in your lap.
But your anger with the senior counselor was mitigated by the fact that he’d been cool with you missing “warm up week” where the staff showed up the Monday before camp officially started to get back in the swing of things. So, you really only had so much wiggle room in which to hold a grudge.
If anything, the fact that Dan had managed to give you absolutely no way of knowing who exactly you were supposed to be picking up that really put weight behind your annoyance. And while that may have been because he himself had no idea, that didn’t make the task any easier.
Slowly inching forward, you search up and down the stretch of curb for any guy who seems like he might fit the vibe or was alone at the very least. Your eyes finally catch on someone and once you backtrack to their section of sidewalk, there’s no helping the way one of your eyebrows arches up involuntarily.
He stands out in the crowd but not for any reason you can put your finger on. He’s not particularly tall, 5’10 or 5’11 at best guess, but he’s got enough height to him. His shoulders are wide, giving his entire body a broad, solid appearance and there’s a distinctive cap on his head, leaving only small glimpses of his short brown hair to be visible.
Hoping that this stranger in the sea of them was the one you were looking for and crossing your fingers that you weren’t about to scare some poor lone traveler, you pull the car up and stop in front of him, rolling the window down as you do so.
“Excuse me?” the man looks up and you get your first full look at him. You weren’t entirely sure what his face revealed, and while he was undeniably attractive, he exactly wasn’t your normal cup of tea either. Not that it mattered since you’d sworn to yourself that this summer would be about enjoying camp and being back with your friends in the place you loved so much, and of course, the importance of making sure the campers had the same experience.
“This is going to sound weird but are you the new counselor? Daniel didn’t tell me anything about who I was supposed to be picking up.”
“Um, what?” he looks completely lost at your words, like he’d been too distracted by the melee of passengers and cars around him to have been paying any attention.
“Are you-” you get distracted by the sudden ding of your phone and look down, a relieved smile breaking across your face as you read the new message that Charles had just sent which included the unknown new hire’s name. It wasn’t much to go off of because heaven forbid he put some thought into the situation and send a picture or something but at least it was something to work with.
‘The new guy’s name is Max Verstappen. It’ll be tempting but don’t kill him. We don’t have time to find a new lifeguard.’
A second later another message popped up, and while not exactly what you’d had in mind to help you find this last minute addition to the staff, it cleared things up immediately.
“He’ll have on an awful fucking flat brim.’
‘It’s impossible to miss but you can try. I would.’
“You’re Max Verstappen? The-” you weren’t certain whether he’d know the name of any of the senior staff, so you just went with the safe option after mentioning Daniel hadn’t helped, “the camp sent me to collect you.”
“Collect me? Like I’m luggage?” Max doesn’t sound impressed in the slightest and a little flustered at that as he takes off his hat, rakes his fingers through his hair before smashing the cap back down. You’re tempted to tell him it looked better off but you hold your tongue.
“Look everyone has baggage from something but that’s beside the point. You are the new lifeguard, right?”
“Yeah, that’s me.”

WIP Wednesday - the Day Late Edition
Tumblr media
So, I woke up this morning to Becca Shepard screaming at me about Horizon... and the characters have now taken the wheel and I'm just along for the ride...
Setting: Horizon, Mass Effect 2, Becca Shepard (not first human Spectre, but takes over in ME2), Garrus Vakarian, Mordin Solus, Grunt
~~~
The shuttle bay was quiet save for the hum of engines and the muted clunk of armored boots on metal decking as they headed towards the shuttle. Becca took a deep breath as she followed Garrus, Mordin, and Grunt on board. Horizon. This would be the biggest test so far.
I hope you’re ready for this…
The hatch opened to eerie silence on the ground, and she had to shake herself to get moving. If she closed her eyes, she could almost imagine a peaceful, quiet colony, no threats or dangers lurking in the shadows.
Then again, that hinted at dangers, too, if you knew what to look for.
The quiet didn’t last; they were met by Collector forces at a vehicle depot within minutes of arrival. The fight was… interesting. This was their first head-to-head confrontation with Collector troops; Becca found herself wishing she’d brought Jack before the end of the first battle. Garrus and Grunt were great – sniping or charging, range or melee; even Mordin had a trick or two up his sleeve in between collecting data they might be able to use to their advantage – but by the end, she was really wishing she’d brought another biotic. As trained as she was, even Becca had her limits as to what she could do. By the time they reached the garage, she was shoving a second energy bar down her throat for a boost to deal with whatever still lay ahead of them.
Speaking with Delan turned out to be a lesson in frustration. His preference for open condescension of the Alliance did nothing but confuse the issue rather than offer intel that would help. Her irritation was clear as they parted ways and the door locked behind them.
A bony taloned hand at her shoulder stopped her from moving forward. “Shepard, wait.”
Becca tried to push past him, but Grunt moved up behind him and Mordin to her left to stop her; clearly, this was a well-thought out and organized intervention. “What?” she all but growled, glaring up at the turian. He’d been keeping his distance from her since Omega leaving her to wonder what his relationship with Anna had been. This was only the second time she’d brought him on a ground mission since he joined the team.
His mandibles fluttered and he blinked. Becca couldn’t say she ‘knew’ turians well, though she’d worked with Vidnos and a handful of others for years, but this expression was screaming ‘patience’. “We can’t go off like this… what’s that human expression? Half-cocked? I know we need to get to those guns and stop the Collector ship, but we are on an active battlefield.”
“Don’t you think I know that?” Her left hand jerked at the stripes trailing down her right arm. “These aren’t a freebie, Vakarian. I had to work my *ass* off to get them and I earned every single one!”
“Garrus right, Shepard,” Mordin interjected with a sage nod. “Too focused, too… determined. Mission objective, yes, but missing vital context along the way.” He shook his head and tsked softly several times. “Not behavior of a soldier, something more... personal.”
Her glare shifted to the salarian. “What?”
She liked him, truly she did. In fact, she preferred nothing more than sitting around his lab – talking or not – with a hot cup of tea when she was off duty because she could learn so much about him and the salarians in general. But there were times when he cottoned on to something far too quickly for her liking, and this time it sent unease shooting through her faster and wilder than a rabid varren.
“Irritation understandable. Acceptable. Your loyalty to Alliance even commendable. However, objective to stop Collectors, not find one person.”
Shit! He knows!
“Shepard.”
Becca closed her eyes and ran a hand over her face before moving her attention to the krogan. She knew next to nothing about the krogan and was learning on the fly with Grunt. Probably not the best way to be doing things, especially since he was tank bred and still learning himself, but it was all she had to go with right now.
“You are my battlemaster and I will fight where you order me to fight, but Garrus and the salarian are right. You are distracted, and going into battle distracted is dangerous.”
Her eyes closed, slowly, purposefully, in a move not unlike how she would reach for dark energy to launch at an enemy. This time, however, she actively sought balance. Calm. Peace.
“You’re thinking too hard, Alenko,” Becca murmured as she sat next to him in the cafeteria. “It’s harder to control when you have to put that kind of effort into it.”
His hand paused halfway to his mouth, the pasta on it forgotten as he glanced over at her. A spark of indignation flared up behind his eyes, but it was quickly smothered by curiosity. “How do you do it?”
Swallowing tightly, she drew in a long, deep, steadying breath. Releasing it a moment later, she forced the stress and worry along with it. I will find you, Kaidan. I know you are here. You have to be here. Somewhere. I will find you… I promise!
