Early 90s New Years Day in a record store.
Remember back in the day where everything was closed on New Years Day except the big malls?
I worked at Record World (if you were in NY/NJ/LI in the 80s & 90s you may remember it.) The district manager thought it would be a good Idea to see if being open on that day in a strip mall would work.
He chose the one I worked in. Two of us volunteered to work, knowing full well the only other store in the strip that would be TCBY. would be an easy day.
When things got slow we would throw a ping pong ball, bounce it off a wall, and whatever it landed on we would play. (you get to hear many thing you wouldn't normally pick up)
We'd been playing ping pong toss for hours, watching cars drive by. People wanted the deli & the Italian foods shop, not us. Hell they didn't even want TCBY.
We didn't notice a car stop & park.
Then Bruce Springsteen walked in.
Greeted him, threw the ping pong ball, put on something from the jazz section, explained our game, let him know if he needed help finding anything just ask.
He started to make a pile on the counter. "A little late Christmas shopping" he said.
That pile grew.
A couple hours later, a black Amex card & 5,000 dollar sale.
He was the only customer that day.
He made our store look amazing.
So amazing in fact that the next year upper management decided all the strip & stand alone store in our district would be open NYD. This was told in a conference call "if Carolyn's store can do it, so can you!"
I heard a collective sigh from all the other managers & had to break in
"...we only had one sale, Springsteen came in! It wasn't like a real day..."
Alas everyone still had to be open.
To this day I secretly blame Bruce Springsteen for retail stores being open on New Years Day.
But I still love him.

FYI EVERYONE!!!
I was at Wendy's recently, I heard a guy ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 ...get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. (But you need to ASK for your discount.)
This incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements.
