Julia: And it's all in here. I can look up anyone on this database. I mean, this is undoubtedly evil. But, you know, the search function is actually kind of impressive.
Chase: You're impressed with their... cataloguing?
Julia: Well, yes. VILE may be a nefarious threat to the planet, but they certainly know their way around a spreadsheet.
Chase: That's hardly surprising. I'm sure there's a direct correlation between ego-driven sadists and those who enjoy meticulously putting things into spreadsheets.
The Chief: I like spreadsheets.
Chase and Julia:
The Chief: What?

Might as well work on this one too…
On Age in Carmen Sandiego (2019)
Or, at the very least, in the timeline of Crimson Shades.
First off, Carmen’s mother, Carlotta Valdez (aka “Vera Cruz”), was supposed to have “died” in 1999. Carmen looked around perhaps a year old at that point in time, giving her a possible birth-date in 1996 to 1997. This in turn suggests that the series takes place some time before the actual date of publication—say, 2017/2018 onwards—to maintain Carmen’s rough age.
Rough age ranges of the characters, taking Carmen’s rough birthdate for estimation:
Team Red
Isabela Valdez/Black Sheep/Carmen Sandiego: 16/17 starting at VILE, 18/19 during the Poitiers Caper, 22/23 by the end.
Fairly self-explanatory.
Pierre Bouchard/Player: 12/13 as a White Hat Hacker, 14/15 during the Poitiers Caper, 18/19 by the end.
Not quite old enough for a learner’s permit (Up Here it’s a G1) during the earlier capers.
Ivy Collins: 19 during the Donuts/Poitiers Capers, 23 by the end.
Zack Collins: 18 during the Donuts/Poitiers Capers, 22 by the end.
Zack is supposed to be around a year younger than Ivy.
Nakamura Suhara/Shadowsan: 23 when sent after Dexter Wolfe, 42 during the Poitiers Caper, 46 by the end.
Young but not too young, as it were.
VILE
Eartha McGlynn/Coach Brunt: 39 upon receiving Black Sheep, 58 during the Poitiers Caper, 61 when arrested, 63 by the end.
Gunnar Stromme/Professor Maelstrom: 37 upon receiving Black Sheep, 56 during the Poitiers Caper, 60 when arrested, 62 by the end.
Oluchi Cleopatra Okorie/Countess Cleo: 26 upon receiving Black Sheep, 45 during the Poitiers Caper, 49 when arrested, 51 by the end.
Saira Dhibar/Doctor Bellum: 33 upon receiving Black Sheep, 54 during the Poitiers Caper, 58 when arrested, 60 by the end.
Sir Nigel Braithwaite/Roundabout: 56 when appointed, 57 when arrested, 59 by the end.
Margherita Picasso/Cookie Booker: 54 when first pelted, 62 when the Hard Drive was stolen, 67 by the end.
Vlad Bobinski: 28 upon receiving Black Sheep, 45 upon letting Black Sheep get away, 50 by the end.
Boris Vladinski: 27 upon receiving Black Sheep, 44 while watching Vlad let Black Sheep get away, 49 by the end.
They may be slightly younger or older, but at least Coach Brunt’s age seems to have been confirmed at 60 by the time of the Fourth Season.
Graham Calloway/Gray/Crackle: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 24 by the end.
Jean-Paul Marignan/Le Chèvre: 19 starting at VILE, 21 during the Poitiers Caper, 25 by the end.
Antonio Sánchez/El Topo: 18/19 starting at VILE, 20/21 during the Poitiers Caper, 24/25 by the end.
Sheena Landry/Tigress: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 23 when arrested, 24 by the end.
Parker Morris/Mime Bomb: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 23 when arrested, 25 by the end.
Sawa Jin/Paper Star: 17 starting at VILE, 18 during the Magna Carta Caper, 22 when arrested at the end.
ACME
Tamara Fraser/Chief: 26 when killing Dexter Wolfe, 45 during the Poitiers Caper, 49 when arresting VILE, 51 by the end.
Inspector/Agent Chase Devineaux: 37 during the Poitiers Caper, 38/39 when arresting VILE, 41 by the end.
Agent Julia Argent: 25 during the Poitiers Caper, 27 when arresting VILE, 29 by the end.
This is going to cause some trouble, I just know it. But the average amount of time it takes to get a university degree in the UK is around three years, and Julia has two of them. She also seems to have jumped right to an associate professorship at Oxford in Season 3, the requirements for which are around 4-6 years of study plus a thesis. Thus Julia would have had to have been in school for at least something like seven to nine years before joining Interpol, with whom she had apparently only been for a fortnight before the Poitiers Caper. The number above assumes that she skipped a year and took a year less to complete her second degree. Or took two years less. Or started two years early. You get my point. Basically, Julia has to be a fair bit older than she looks in order to actually have the qualifications she possesses.
Agent Umaira Zari: 38 during the Poitiers Caper, 40 when arresting VILE, 42 by the end.
Some additional ages:
Nakamura Hideo: 17 when his brother Suhara was born, 36 when his brother disappeared, 63 when his brother returned for good, 65 by the end.
Not an unreasonable age given his looks, I thought.
Carlotta Valdez: 27 when she gave birth to Isabela, 47 when Carmen returned home to her, 49 by the end.
Young but not too long, once again.
Any I missed?

"Carmen Sandiego": An Enthralling Animated Series [Part 3]
Continued from part 2
Tumblr media
Chief looks at a file about Carlotta Valdez, Carmen's long-lost mother
The series goes beyond a fun and low-stress 1990s game show, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?. While there are educational geographical lessons aimed at kids, Carmen is often in mortal danger and "out of reach" of those chasing her. One fan recently counted 71 near-death experiences for Carmen throughout the series. So much for this being solely for kids!
This article was originally meant for The Geekiary. I submitted the article in mid-August 2022, on August 16, and it got sent back for edits, and even after a long conversation with one of the editors, including re-submitting the article a second time, I decided to publish it on my own (see original post for details) It was published on my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 2, 2023.
Carmen does not go on her missions alone. Apart from Player, South Boston siblings Zack (Michael Hawley) and Ivy (Abby Trott), help her as part of Team Red. Zack is often the getaway driver due to his lack of experience with undercover work.
In contrast, Ivy either runs interference using her engineering skills or makes disguises. In this way, she is like Monique in Kim Possible or Tomoyo in Cardcaptor Sakura, who make outfits for eponymous protagonists of those series.
Specifically, for Carmen, the tools that Ivy provides her ensures she is prepared for any situation. This enhanced by her array of outfits, her expert skill at blending in, even she shows her face.
A major plotline throughout Carmen Sandiego is her quest to learn more about herself and her past. In a clever twist, her famous nom de plume comes from a red trenchcoat she steals from VILE's bookkeeper, Cookie Booker. "Carmen Outerwear" is emblazoned on the coat's back. The coat also says it is from San Diego, California.
She gains many other names throughout the series. Player calls her "Red". Her friends Zack and Ivy call her "Carm". Rito Moreno's inclusion as the voice of Cookie in the series is a nod to the fact that she voiced Carmen in the 1990s Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? series.
In the 1990s animated series, Carmen does learn about her past. In the final episodes of that series, she wrestles with the fact that a wealthy industrialist named Malcolm Avalon may be her father. This series explores that more directly.
Carmen carries three Russian nesting dolls with her when she comes to VILE Isle. While this might, at first, suggest some possible Russian ancestry, it is likely a red herring. In any case, her past is very important to her. VILE exploits this, hoping there will be an irreparable rift between Carmen and Shadowsan (Paul Nakauchi).
The latter is a Japanese stealth teacher that Carmen detested in crime school. It is later revealed that he left out certain details from the official report about Carmen's childhood home in Argentina being burned to the ground.
In a nod to the original series, Carmen and ACME (Agency to Classify and Monitor Evildoers) are on opposite sides. While Carmen is often running from ACME agents, in one episode she has Player hack into the ACME mainframe. It confirms that Chief, otherwise known as Tamara Fraser (Dawnn Lewis), killed her birth father, Dexter Wolfe.
Chief serves as an important secondary character. She communicates with her agents through a hologram beamed from a pen. She appears in the interactive special, To Steal or Not To Steal, if you click the "wrong" option, causing Bellum's devices to erase Zack and Ivy's minds.
Later on in the series, Carmen asks ACME to find her mother for her. Carmen Sandiego reveals in season 3 that a woman named Carlotta Valdez is her mother. In the last episode of the show, she enters an orphanage run by her mother, meeting her.

Carmen Sandiego and the search for her mom, "Vera Cruz"
Tumblr media
In episode 1, "The Luchadora Tango Caper," we learn that Carmen's mother was named "Carlotta Valdez" and lived in Veracruz with her father, Dexter Wolfe, for one year. The whole first episode is her trying to figure out who her mother was, building on what happened in Season 2, saying she doesn't even know if that is her real name and that she could be anywhere in the world. She meets Carlotta Valdez, who has changed her name to "Lupe Peligro," after breaking into her house. In the end, Lupe ends up not being her mother, but she ends up continuing her quest to find out about her identity. She also is able to fight off Coach Brunt and Devineaux. Player then informs her that there is a string of thefts near Mexico City and she decides to look into those, although she says she has to get back to the "good fight."
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on October 5, 2020.
Tumblr media
In the next episode, "The Day of the Dead Caper," Carm goes to Mexico City, meeting Sonia, and gets captured. However, she does honor her mother, even though she doesn't know her, during a ceremony for Dia de los Muertos, while VILE remains in pursuit. Sonia decides to steal the art back she stole, while the VILE agents get chewed out for losing Carmen and their new recruit. In the episode that follows, "The Haunted Bayou Caper," they help the Crawfish King, a celebrity chef, get back his recipe written by his ancestor after he says it is the most important link to his Creole heritage. In the fourth episode, "The Masks of Venice Caper," Shadowsan laments to Carmen that her quest to find her mother has been sidelined. She says that was her choice and she hopes to meet better people while saying that family comes in "many forms." The last episode of the season, "The Jolly Good Show Caper," does not mention her mother at all. One fan summarized the facts we know about Carmen, from the show, so far:
She is born in Buenos Aires, Argentina
She was associated with VILE since she was a baby until her 14s, and is currently 20
Her mom is "Vera Cruz," and her dad is Dexter Wolfe, formerly a member of the VILE faculty who tries to leave but ended up being killed by the Chief, then known as Tamara Fraser
There are also possibilities she may have some Russian heritage due to the fact her treasured possession, when living on VILE Island, was Russian nesting dolls. In any case, much of her parentage is shrouded in mystery. Hopefully, she concludes her quest, either finding her mother, or something else about her past in Season 4, which may be the show's last season!

CARMEN SANDIEGO CHARACTERS + MOVIES
Boo I felt like making headcanons again bc I spend more time wondering what these assholes do in their free time than I do on my job
CARMEN
Didn’t have access to movies growing up so Player, Zack, and Ivy have been catching her up on the most popular ones
HORRIBLE to watch with. Doesn’t really understand “suspension of disbelief” as a concept and will ask stupid questions the whole time. Player almost ended their friendship because she nitpicked Lord of the Rings for being “unrealistic”
Enjoys low stakes 2000s girl chick flicks like mean girls and legally blonde. She has enough stress in her life man she just wants to relax
HATES heist movies because of how innacurate they are. Team Red has taken to watching them JUST to hear her pick them apart
PLAYER
Sci-fi/fantasy junkie. Anything and everything that has aliens/magic and shitty practical effects from the 80’s/90’s he is all over
Has never said a single kind thing about the Star Wars franchise in his life. They are his favourite movies of all time
ADORES Edgar Wright and has slowly been converting Team Red to his movies. Zack loved Baby Driver. Ivy loved Shaun of the Dead. Shadowsan loved Hot Fuzz. He considers Scott Pilgrim the pinnacle of Canadian cinema
Cannot STAND the amount of remakes happening in Hollywood recently
ZACK
Canon enjoyer of blockbuster action movies. Everyone dreads the nights when he gets to choose a film bc his taste is so generic
Does not know what the Snyder cut is. Thank god
His only redeeming quality is a love of early dreamworks. Will not stop quoting Madnagascar
Has seen every Marvel movie and thinks all of them are good. Player has BEGGED him to watch better movies but he won’t. He’s the type to rag on Scorsese for being “boring”
Has seen Kevin Feige’s extended filmography. Does not know who that man is
IVY
Horror fanatic
Banned from choosing movies for film night after convincing them to watch her “favourite lesbian romcom” with her. That lesbian romcom was Saw
Ellen Ripley was not only her personal hero but also her gay awakening. The Xenomorph queen was her second gay awakening
Also loves period dramas. Enjoys the tiddies and knows she would look SO good in those fancy waistcoats the men wear
Watches old slashers with Carmen and laugh whenever someone dies in a stupid way
SHADOWSAN
Faculty considered movies “low brow” entertainment so he hasn’t seen a movie made before the year 2000
Loves a good mob flick. Got into Scorsese specifically because Zack hated him. Goodfellas is his favourite
Everyone assumes he enjoys samurai movies but he actually HATES them. Hideo would ramble about historical inaccuracies the whole way through and he’s still bored just thinking about it
Used to love Yakuza films back in the day but they were soured for him after actually living as one
Loved Knives Out, found Daniel Craig VERY attractive, and has since fallen down the James Bond rabbit hole
CHASE
The most pretentious film hack you’ve ever met in your life. He is taking you to a back alley screening of some arthouse eastern european gay porn on a first date and it will be the most profound thing you’ve ever seen in your life
Detective noir movies and cheesy black and white romances are his favourites. He likes falling asleep to them
He and Player both appreciate animation as a form of cinema, but while Player is referring to like. the Mario movie, Chase is talking about some 3 minute Russian stopmotion surrealist piece from 1951. He attends Annecy every year and has been banned from the Oscars due to threats of violence
He likes Poirot tho. Transmasc king
JULIA
If she has a few hours to herself she’d rather watch a documentary than go to a movie theatre, but she loves historical dramas
Enjoys biopics but thinks it’s stupid to make them for people who are alive
Likes watching movies for the sake of trash talking them, so she is the only person who can tolerate sitting through one with Carmen
LOVES Wes Anderson though. Chase got her into his stuff and the symmetry scratches an itch in her brain. But don’t tell him that
Also enjoys period dramas for the tiddies
CHIEF
Shitty cop movie enjoyer. The kind of person who insists that Die Hard is her favourite christmas movie
LOVES heist movies because of how inaccurate they are. Will mentally nitpick whatever secret service is going after them and be like “ACME wouldn’t do that lol”
She’s semi aware that she’s the antoagonist in Carmen’s own heist narrative so she’s started having fun with it
Closet lover of b-tier comedy movies. Like the ones with Adam Sandler and Kevin Hart on the cover
Does not enjoy watching movies socially. That is quality time for her and her cat. She does not have to shush Commander

“No he vuelto, soy mejor". Read the full article

Maritimers react to report that calls for greater competition in the grocery industry
There was a full house Tuesday for the free community lunch at Dartmouth non-profit The North Grove — a regular occurrence these days due to the high cost of food.
“Right now the reason is people don't have adequate access to affordable food,” says Wendy Fraser, executive director of the Dartmouth-based non-profit.
Fraser says attendance at its community meals has increased 45 per cent year over year.
As well, North Grove’s food trading program was visited a record 143 times in May, which is an almost 200 per cent increase from December.
“Food prices are not manageable,” Fraser says.
“At the end of the day, I don’t feel like this is a food insecurity problem, it’s a poverty problem, and as long as people are living on an extremely limited income with no increases…. then people are being left further and further behind.”
For Dartmouth resident Troy Pallo, the services at The North Grove, including its community garden, are essential at a time when living on a fixed income means making difficult spending decisions.
“We sort of have to give and take,” says Pallo, who lives on disability.
When asked what he would like to see to make a difference, he says he has a few ideas.
“We need competition so they can bring down (food) prices,” he says, “or either raise the disability to come up above poverty and inflation.”
In a highly-anticipated report released Tuesday the Competition Bureau agrees that Canada’s concentrated grocery industry, dominated by a handful of corporate players, plays a part in the rising cost of food.
“Without changes in the competitive landscape, Canadians will not be able to fully benefit from competitive prices and product choices,” the report reads.
“The report states the obvious, we need more competition, but how do we get there?” asks Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University.
The Bureau’s recommendations for all levels of government include creating a national strategy to support new types of grocery businesses, introducing unit pricing requirements, and limiting a company's ability to shutout potential competitors by buying up neighboring real estate.
“Some companies buy land and leave it empty just to make sure the competition doesn't build another store right across the street,” Charlebois says.
But the report fails to address an even larger issue, he says.
“The food industry in Canada has a price fixing culture,” says Charlebois. “And there are emails out there now that suggest that more verticals than bread have been impacted by price fixing, so that’s the big elephant in the room that is not properly addressed in the report.”
“Instead of relying on companies coming forward with admissions,” he adds, “perhaps it’s time (for the Competition Bureau) to go after criminals…. Consumer trust is being impacted by that.”
The report also calls for more government support for independent grocers.
The co-owner of Dartmouth’s Gateway Meat Market agrees.
Tamara Selig says what her business needs right now is municipal support to expand the business and meet the demand for affordable groceries.
“As far as being able to get building permits pushed through a little bit faster, or just having less hoops to go through would be helpful,” Selig says.
“Something has to happen, the prices of groceries have been going crazy and we’ve seen that demand where people are coming to us now,” she says.
“Competition is necessary…(consumers) might not have access to come to us or go to other options. A lot of times in the communities they live in, (the big grocers are) their only choice, so competition is not a bad thing,” she explains.
The Bureau plans to check back on whether there has been progress made on its recommendations in three years.
In the meantime, shoppers continue to find savings wherever they can.
“Prices are too high and these big companies are just sucking up everything,” says shopper James Kearsley, who came from the Annapolis Valley into Dartmouth to shop at Selig’s store.
“We gotta eat, we gotta buy food,” he says, “we don't have a choice.”

if there was such thing as the definition of perfect couple in a dictionary, the fraser-davis’ would be it.
the life of dreams, the unattainable one that society insists on forcing upon all common humans, is, essentially, what tamara and rhodes managed to achieve. tamara was seventeen when she went on to study at oxford university, where she would later graduate from in clinical medicine. she was also seventeen when she stumbled upon rhodes, the ( then ) nineteen year-old who was a teaching-assistant on his way to become one of the best medical geneticists in the country. after months on end, finding all possible excuses to spend time together, it was only natural their friendship would progress into a relationship.
three years on, said relationship had blossomed into a beautiful marriage proposal in the dreamy beaches of turks and caicos and just two years later, they had permanent smiles attached to their faces when they got married in buckinghamshire surrounded by all their loved ones. within ten years, both tamara and rhodes had established themselves as the crème de la crème of their respective careers, but even with the recognition, the unreal house, the holidays in the most stunning destinations and the happy marriage, there was something missing.
a little, tiny, something missing.
tamara got pregnant quickly, the excitement and happiness overtaking when shy of three months, they told the whole family and friends... only for the baby not to make it and a miscarriage to happen. the suffering, the pain... unlike everyone predicted, brought them closer and so, with a green light from the doctors, they begun trying again.
and they tried... and tried... and continued to try.
a year went on and nothing seemed to work. even when tamara got excited because her period was missing and she felt pregnant, even when they tried IVF and all possible treatments, even if they exhausted all possibilities and tried just about everything.
rhodes tried to tell her they could be happy without a baby. they could carry on and be fine, but tamara could see the cracks each failed attempt left, the hit their marriage was taking because it just wouldn’t happen. it made no sense how nothing was wrong, how there was no issue whatsoever, and yet, she couldn’t seem to get pregnant. they both turned to work, drowning in all the appointments and extra jobs they took just to avoid each other, pretending like nothing was wrong, like sleeping together, sharing a bed, was still easy and there wasn’t any tension.
months later, by chance, when tamara was doing a routine checkup, she found out the tiny little something that had been missing all along was now steadily growing inside her.
andres was everything tamara and rhodes could have asked for. the perfect baby, the perfect child. healthy, happy, low-maintenance. the little golden-boy, the sunshine of the family. he went on to continue being the perfect teen with straight A’s, excelling at everything he did, at everything he engaged on. the beautiful boy who didn’t need to anything other than exist to get sighs out of the girls and glares out of the other boys.
and then, their everything who had never done anything wrong, who was almost too good to be true, was almost robbed from them.
it was a hot summer day, tamara and rhodes came home laughing at something that probably wasn’t even funny, only to stop dead in their tracks when the door swung open and they found andres lying unconscious on the floor, blood painting the white carpet, the floors and the furniture. it was all a blur. the only thing they both retained from it was that appearances were deceiving. that their cheerful child, their golden boy so full of joy, wasn’t actually that happy. it so turned out that andres had taken one pill too many in order to be able to do everything he pursued to keep his parents proud and happy, which ended up leading him to pass out and with the hit to the furniture nearby, break his nose in the process. the specifics weren’t the point though. the point was their boy, this sixteen years-old boy, had spent the vast majority of his life trying to bend back over backwards to do all they threw his way, to exceed all their expectations, to ace all the courses, all the sports, all the extracurricular activities. to be friends with the people he thought they would like, to mold himself into what they projected and in the process lose the chance to find who he truly was.
while his friends went on to spend holidays at the coolest places, andres was in rehab and when school started and everyone’s life continued to move forward? andres was seeing psychiatrists and psychologists. when kids his age were figuring out what uni to apply and what degree to choose? andres was trying to figure out who he was, what he liked and what he didn’t, what was right and what was wrong.
fast-forward to the present, andres is currently a select group 2 football referee — or an EFL championship referee — who resides in london, away from what had been the toxic environment he had when he was surrounded by all the memories he had at home. he’s more of a social butterfly these days, having made his own friendships and having grown into his own persona, and for once in his life, he feels like he knows himself.
