I think about the alternate universes where a different faculty member found Carmen as a baby and subsequently betrayed VILE for her constantly. How the team dynamic would change. How they’d grow as characters. The shenanigans they’d get into
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also how good Shadowsan would be as a straight up, no holds barred villain. But that’s another drawing for another day)

Faculty Presentations
Tumblr media
[image description: A screenshot taken from the Netflix reboot of Carmen Sandiego. Professor Maelstrom is looking at a slide behind him, bewildered. The slide is an inkblot that looks like “a loincub sniffing its own tail” according to Coach Brunt. /End description]
THEY DO PRESENTATIONS. THIS IS A SLIDESHOW. THATS FUCKING HILARIOUS
IMAGINE THE FACULTY MAKING THEIR PRESENTATIONS ON GOOGLE SLIDES ABOUT WHY THEY NEED TO STEAL DRESSES OR STAMPS OR LAUNCH CODES
imagining dr bellum and cleo working on a presentation together about why they need to steal the milan gowns. bellum is putting walls upon walls of infodump text and cleo is suffering because she just wants the slides to look good
shadowsan’s slide shows are just like “Tigress should go get the stamp. She is good. Here’s my works cited: I said so”
Brunt making a slideshow about why she NEEDS to look like elvis presley
god its so stupid i love this stupid show

Might as well work on this one too…
On Age in Carmen Sandiego (2019)
Or, at the very least, in the timeline of Crimson Shades.
First off, Carmen’s mother, Carlotta Valdez (aka “Vera Cruz”), was supposed to have “died” in 1999. Carmen looked around perhaps a year old at that point in time, giving her a possible birth-date in 1996 to 1997. This in turn suggests that the series takes place some time before the actual date of publication—say, 2017/2018 onwards—to maintain Carmen’s rough age.
Rough age ranges of the characters, taking Carmen’s rough birthdate for estimation:
Team Red
Isabela Valdez/Black Sheep/Carmen Sandiego: 16/17 starting at VILE, 18/19 during the Poitiers Caper, 22/23 by the end.
Fairly self-explanatory.
Pierre Bouchard/Player: 12/13 as a White Hat Hacker, 14/15 during the Poitiers Caper, 18/19 by the end.
Not quite old enough for a learner’s permit (Up Here it’s a G1) during the earlier capers.
Ivy Collins: 19 during the Donuts/Poitiers Capers, 23 by the end.
Zack Collins: 18 during the Donuts/Poitiers Capers, 22 by the end.
Zack is supposed to be around a year younger than Ivy.
Nakamura Suhara/Shadowsan: 23 when sent after Dexter Wolfe, 42 during the Poitiers Caper, 46 by the end.
Young but not too young, as it were.
VILE
Eartha McGlynn/Coach Brunt: 39 upon receiving Black Sheep, 58 during the Poitiers Caper, 61 when arrested, 63 by the end.
Gunnar Stromme/Professor Maelstrom: 37 upon receiving Black Sheep, 56 during the Poitiers Caper, 60 when arrested, 62 by the end.
Oluchi Cleopatra Okorie/Countess Cleo: 26 upon receiving Black Sheep, 45 during the Poitiers Caper, 49 when arrested, 51 by the end.
Saira Dhibar/Doctor Bellum: 33 upon receiving Black Sheep, 54 during the Poitiers Caper, 58 when arrested, 60 by the end.
Sir Nigel Braithwaite/Roundabout: 56 when appointed, 57 when arrested, 59 by the end.
Margherita Picasso/Cookie Booker: 54 when first pelted, 62 when the Hard Drive was stolen, 67 by the end.
Vlad Bobinski: 28 upon receiving Black Sheep, 45 upon letting Black Sheep get away, 50 by the end.
Boris Vladinski: 27 upon receiving Black Sheep, 44 while watching Vlad let Black Sheep get away, 49 by the end.
They may be slightly younger or older, but at least Coach Brunt’s age seems to have been confirmed at 60 by the time of the Fourth Season.
Graham Calloway/Gray/Crackle: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 24 by the end.
Jean-Paul Marignan/Le Chèvre: 19 starting at VILE, 21 during the Poitiers Caper, 25 by the end.
Antonio Sánchez/El Topo: 18/19 starting at VILE, 20/21 during the Poitiers Caper, 24/25 by the end.
Sheena Landry/Tigress: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 23 when arrested, 24 by the end.
Parker Morris/Mime Bomb: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 23 when arrested, 25 by the end.
Sawa Jin/Paper Star: 17 starting at VILE, 18 during the Magna Carta Caper, 22 when arrested at the end.
ACME
Tamara Fraser/Chief: 26 when killing Dexter Wolfe, 45 during the Poitiers Caper, 49 when arresting VILE, 51 by the end.
Inspector/Agent Chase Devineaux: 37 during the Poitiers Caper, 38/39 when arresting VILE, 41 by the end.
Agent Julia Argent: 25 during the Poitiers Caper, 27 when arresting VILE, 29 by the end.
This is going to cause some trouble, I just know it. But the average amount of time it takes to get a university degree in the UK is around three years, and Julia has two of them. She also seems to have jumped right to an associate professorship at Oxford in Season 3, the requirements for which are around 4-6 years of study plus a thesis. Thus Julia would have had to have been in school for at least something like seven to nine years before joining Interpol, with whom she had apparently only been for a fortnight before the Poitiers Caper. The number above assumes that she skipped a year and took a year less to complete her second degree. Or took two years less. Or started two years early. You get my point. Basically, Julia has to be a fair bit older than she looks in order to actually have the qualifications she possesses.
Agent Umaira Zari: 38 during the Poitiers Caper, 40 when arresting VILE, 42 by the end.
Some additional ages:
Nakamura Hideo: 17 when his brother Suhara was born, 36 when his brother disappeared, 63 when his brother returned for good, 65 by the end.
Not an unreasonable age given his looks, I thought.
Carlotta Valdez: 27 when she gave birth to Isabela, 47 when Carmen returned home to her, 49 by the end.
Young but not too long, once again.
Any I missed?

Young Carmen: -WAAAAAH BALD! BALD! BALD! *She repeatedly points at the bald head*
The other Operatives: *Staring at the bald head in shock, all out of sync* BALD! BALD! BALD! BALD!
Mime Bomb: *Breaking character for the first time in ages, he screams, eyes burning* MY EYES!!!!

Carmen Sandiego Oc Infodump (I’m bored and brainrotting)
Okay so like… for context this is an oc I insert into basically everything because I’ve had her for such a long time and she is like a child to me LMAOAOAO so I’m saying that rn to avoid any possible confusion since she’s the main oc I use for a completely separate AU that has to do with FNAF lol.
But dw I will be labeling the posts accordingly so you know which versions I’m talking about. :)
ANYWAYS UHHH REWATCHED CARMEN SANDIEGO. GOT SAD. BRAIN COPED BY INSERTING MY OC INTO THE SERIES AS AN AU FOR SOME REASON SOOOO ENJOY THIS RANDOM INFO…
Okay sooo first off her name is River O’Callaghan, and she’s just a little fucked up, just a little silly. So naturally she is more on the VILE side of things and as such would not get along with Carmen at all despite how similar she is (in some ways) to Carmen’s childhood self LMAO
River actually would’ve been raised very well (if not for trauma) because her parents were actually incredibly good people. I wouldn’t call them completely Lawful Good, but they were very pleasant, very kind.
Unfortunately, River’s parents sort of dieded so, similar to Carmen, she didn’t have anywhere to go really as a child. Except the difference here was that she was found by Maelstrom and Bellum while the two were on a little faculty field trip (and Shadowsan has already abandoned VILE by this point btw so dw about him.. yet).
But unlike with Carmen, they didn’t automatically take her in, and for obvious reasoning; they were skeptical. They didn’t want a repeat of the whole “Black Sheep” situation. So faculty kinda puzzled over what to do with her for a minute there.
Coach Brunt was ESPECIALLY hesitant because—despite her evilness—she was very heartbroken over losing “Black Sheep” to “Carmen” so she really did not wanna end up doing the same thing all over again.
But at the same time, faculty knew that letting a child who’d managed to discover them wander off back into society could be potentially bad for them later down the line. They considered erasing her memories, but considering how young she was (about 8 or 9), they were concerned about what effects Bellum’s device could have on such an underdeveloped mind. And they weren’t just gonna fuck up some kid’s brain when she didn’t even really understand what was going on LMAO
So yeah they were kinda stuck. That is, until Maelstrom proposed that they perform a few tests to see just how “loyal” and “evil” she was. He hypothesized that doing so would save them any potential trouble that could come from keeping her around, and that this was likely their biggest mistake with “Black Sheep”.
So they do the tests, and Countess Cleo and Coach Brunt end up having to make sure they don’t get too out of hand and/or damaging. Because although they wouldn’t really care when it came to regular VILE operatives, they deemed this a “special case” of sorts for whatever reason.
During this strange series of tests (which there were a LOT of), River was under fairly light surveillance from Bellum (because they wanted her to have the illusion of privacy to make sure all of her actions when she thought they weren’t around were genuine). Cleo would also have clothing tailor-made for her because she didn’t really have any. And it was also during these tests that Maelstrom finally found out that her parents weren’t “around” anymore, which he could tell by the way she said it that she didn’t fully understand the gravity of a situation like that.
Coach Brunt found out about this pretty quickly, as she’d insisted on sitting in on every single one of those tests, and out of slight guilt she ended up teaching River a bit about self-defense for the remainder of her “testing period”.
River actually very much enjoyed their company btw. :)
Anyways, faculty eventually came to the conclusion that River really doesn’t know or care about the concept of “good” or “evil” yet (which they kind of should’ve been able to guess already but they were paranoid and wanted to be sure). So in the end, they decided the best thing to do would be to make her aware of their evil ideologies right away; make it known to her that they’re very much aware that they steal for selfish reasons, and that they are not good people. Of course, they never phrased it exactly like that, but thanks to this new approach, River was a LOT more aware of what was going on with the Isle of VILE than Carmen ever was at her age.
And thanks to HOW she was receiving that information (and also just her general nature from the beginning tbh), River was completely fine with this. She liked being evil. So her time spent on the island wasn’t of ignorance.
But yeah, with all the backstory stuff out of the way, let’s get to her general personality and theme! And also a little further into her relationships with the most well-known members of VILE!!
First off, again, she’s fairly similar to how Carmen was in childhood, except she STAYED that way; she stayed pretty nonchalant, pretty prankster-ish, and did just about whatever she wanted within the surprisingly fair limits the faculty set. But this was really all only because they made sure from the start that she wouldn’t betray them. And even then, Bellum still monitored her here and there, just to be safe.
River’s three biggest passions are music, literature, and witchcraft! She remembers a lot of the spells and rituals she learned as a kid, and will occasionally plead Maelstrom and/or Bellum to let her get more books on the subject to add to her ever-growing collection (but also just books in general, as she’s a huge reader). And then there’s music because she loves to sing and write songs despite getting rather embarrassed about doing so in front of others.
Sirens (as in the mythological sirens) become her overall theme when she inevitably becomes a VILE operative, but we’ll get into that more in a later post lol.
Maelstrom and Bellum are the two that tend to dote on River the most (Coach Brunt coming in very close second though Cleo isn’t too distant third). Maelstrom isn’t really the best at showing affection, given his character, but he offers her more praise than pretty much any other operative, and sometimes she’ll try to give him a hug to which he’ll respond by awkwardly patting her shoulder because he doesn’t really… get it LMAO
Bellum also gets awkward with hugs, but she’s obviously much better at showing River affection than Maelstrom. Think of those moments where she’s watching cat videos, or when she refers to Crackle as her “dear boy”. She refers to River as her “dear girl”. Yeah.
Honestly the only faculty member who doesn’t get weird about hugs is Coach Brunt, who welcomes them just about every time they’re offered to her lol. She’s admittedly still slightly wary about River due to anxiety even though she trusts her, but she’ll eventually be able to fully push through that. She treats her pretty similarly to how she treated “Black Sheep”, other than that.
As for Countess Cleo, she’s no doubt also extremely unfamiliar with the whole “affection” thing. But because River does not in fact throw water balloons at Cookie (they actually told her to stay away from Cookie out of paranoia), or perform any “messy” pranks, she doesn’t really mind River’s cheekiness nearly as much. She also enjoyed playing dress-up with her during her “testing period” so they actually really bonded during that time, and will indulge in classics and art history and stuff like that, which is part of why reading and culture became one of her big side-interests. :3
Maelstrom and Bellum are also the reason why she’s so well-read lmao.
And Brunt’s the reason why she can put up a fight. 😌
Now I weirdly wanna discuss a few of the operatives (Le Chèvre, El Topo, and Tigress).
Le Chèvre and El Topo would also very much be like parents to River, and would likely beg the faculty to let them take her on capers with them to no avail lmao. Not to say that River never gets to go on any capers. In fact, the faculty take her on some whenever they can be there to supervise! It’s just that they are protective of their new evil daughter and do not trust anyone else to watch over her while traveling.
At first, El Topo is actually the only one with no real suspicions about River, because she taught herself puppy eyes and he couldn’t find it in him to be skeptical when she looked at them like that LMAO
However, Le Chèvre and Tigress were very iffy about the faculty raising a kid on the Isle of VILE again. Luckily though, they both eventually warmed up to her. Tigress warmed up faster than she would ever let herself admit, so she would often act annoyed by River around others and then treat her like a little sister she never had in private. Tigress stopped the charade after a while, but she didn’t realize that it was kind of obvious she was faking her irritation to begin with.
But yeah River is a silly little guy, completely unapologetically evil and loves her evil little family!! I’m getting sleepy so idk what else to say for now, but feel free to send asks if you’ve got any further questions!!
Also Carmen and River absolutely despise each other once River graduates crime school and starts on her silly little heists. It’s like a sibling rivalry but genuinely hostile LMFAO
