成城石井の「バスクチーズケーキ」何年も前から、大好きなチーズケーキの一つです。

とにかくバランスが良いのだ。チーズの風味、食感、邪魔をしない酸味、甘さも過不足なく、ほんと「ちょうど良い」

Seijo Ishii's ``Basque Cheesecake'' has been one of my favorite cheesecakes for many years. Anyway, it's well balanced. The flavor and texture of the cheese, the acidity that doesn't interfere with it, and the sweetness are just right.

Yaldabaoth says "welcome to my Velvet Room" in the English version, as opposed to Igor's "welcome to the Velvet Room." Is that a thing that happens in the Japanese version, too?

Hi, thanks for your ask, which I am brushing the dust off! This is a very widely noticed detail, and you won't be surprised to hear there's a little more going on in Japanese.

In short: in the Japanese original, both Fake Igor and Igor say "welcome to my Velvet Room". However, the way they say it differs—as the whole way the two of them speak differs.

igors, what the heck

The place most people notice this is in this cinematic, where we first meet Fake Igor.

Igor [Yaldabaoth] ようこそ、私のベルベットルウムへ。 youkoso... watakushi no berubetto ruumu e Welcome to my Velvet Room.

First of all, in case you know kanji, yes, that's the more decrepit and more formal-sounding watakushi that Yaldygor is using, not the everyday watashi which is written the same way—the same pronoun Igor used in earlier games.

For comparison, in P3P:

Igor ようこそ、ベルベットルームへ。 youkoso, berubetto ruumu e Welcome to the Velvet Room.

... while P4G Igor welcomes you that first time simply with youkoso.

Yaldy and Igor both have cutscenes where you walk in and they greet you. Yaldy's is at the start of Kamoshida's Palace; Igor's is when (if you aren't on NG+) Lavenza tells you that you can no longer summon Satanael. And these two lines are identical:

Short and sweet: "welcome to the Velvet Room". No possessives. In fact, they're both identical to that initial greeting from P3P that we looked at.

But True Igor has a second one of these, when you arrive to find your cell door open:

waga is a possessive. This is True Igor saying "my Velvet Room"! Per Wiktionary, waga is "a fossilized phrase... that carries old-fashioned connotations, and suggests a favorable view of the following noun". Wikipedia further calls it "faux-archaic" and points out that it retains its grammar from Old Japanese, with ga serving as a possessive in wa-ga. Let's keep looking.

when you walk in

Now, both Fake Igor and True Igor have a default line that they use when you walk in. And these lines are profoundly different:

Igor [Yaldabaoth] ようこそ…私のベルベットルームへ。今日は、何をして欲しいのだ? youkoso… watakushi no berubetto ruumu e. kyou wa, nani o shite hoshii no da? Welcome to my Velvet Room… What do you need today? [lit. welcome to my Velvet Room. what is it you want me to do today?] Igor ようこそ…我がベルベットルームへ。ご用件をお聞き致しましょう… youkoso… waga berubetto ruumu e. go-youken o o-kiki itashimashou… Welcome to the Velvet Room. Let me hear your business. [lit. welcome to my Velvet Room. I will humbly listen to your honourable business.]

In Japanese, the difference between them is screamingly obvious. True Igor is using humble language (kenjougo, a form of keigo) to talk about his own actions, with that o-kiki itashimasu ("I will humbly listen") and that beautified go-youken ("your honourable business"). Even his possessive, waga, honours its object to a degree—"my/our honoured Velvet Room". Again, P3 and P4 Igor spoke in just this way—humble and formalised.

But Fake Igor, the God of Control? Well... he's not using any form of keigo. In fact, he's not even using polite forms. He asks you what you want with no da!—which, on a question, is an interrogative construct that demands an answer! "Why are you even here?" "What do you want this time?"

True Igor sounds like an old retainer on a dusty estate somewhere: you are the guest, the customer, and he is the servant. Fake Igor addresses you as if he's your superior. In fact, the way he's addressing you is rude. Like he's the important one here. Like a guard with a prisoner.

And, if you were used to the ritualised humility P3 and P4 Igor spoke with, Fake Igor's blunt language style must have come as quite a shock.

pronouns generally

While Real Igor also uses watakushi as his pronoun, Fake Igor also sometimes uses that honorific, formalised waga possessive:

Igor [Yaldabaoth] 我が試みは水泡に帰し…全ては終わったのだ。 waga kokoromi wa suihou ni kishi... subete wa owatta no da My experiment has come to naught… Everything is over. [lit. know that my efforts have been in vain... that it has all ended.] Igor 私の名は、イゴール。 watakushi no na wa, igooru My name is Igor.

True Igor uses waga to honour the Velvet Room. But Yaldygor reserves waga for his own grand plan—"my efforts", or "my game", as he says in that same scene—and uses watakushi no as his possessive at all other times.

Note that the word for a scientific experiment is not kokoromi, but 実験 jikken—which makes Fake Igor's statement something more like "all my efforts have been in vain". That suihou ni kisuru is literally something like "ended in foam"—we might say "melted before my eyes", or "like foam on the ocean".

conclusion

So what can we learn from all this? Well, given that English lacks a formalised honorific system such as Japanese has, English Yaldygor's "my Velvet Room" is a good way of conveying something unsavoury about the character.

But it also means the characters are slightly different. English Yaldygor is marked by that possessiveness over the Velvet Room itself—the position and place that he stole from Igor. Japanese Yaldygor, on the other hand, is marked by how he treats you, the protagonist. He talks down to you, which True Igor never does. He disrespects you. He clearly believes that he is the centre of the Velvet Room, the important part of it—not its guest, as Igor does.

And sure, that leads to a feeling of ownership of the Room, but that's not all it is—or even the most important thing, because True Igor also expresses possession of the Room. Japanese Yaldygor talks, in every way, like someone who would lock you in a prison cell in chains and torture you. Like someone who thinks he's a bigshot, and you are dirt.

And that's the difference between them—which their language so clearly conveys.

先日、梅雨の合間にツタを刈りまして。

染めてみることにいたしました。

I' d gotten japanese ivies during the rest of the rainy season, and tried to dye!

葉っぱだけをアルカリ抽出したつもりが…緑ではない、と。ならば蔓も行けば良かったですかね。葉っぱだけでも赤っぽい色が染まりそうです。

なお、炊いているとベリーのような甘い匂いが漂います・・・甘葛！そうです、大昔このものは甘味料の材料！

I did alkaline extraction only with leaves, but it wasn't green...I might get something red colour. And it smelled sweet like a kind of berries...oh, japanese ivies used to be used to make the sweet syrup in the ancient age ...!

Ranking the books I read in Japanese this year

It’s the end of the year and I don’t think I’ll be finishing any more Japanese books this month, so I thought it would be fun to rank what I read! I read twelve novels in Japanese this year, hitting my goal (but not quite reading one a month). There won’t be twelve rankings here, though, because I read multiple books from the same series and will be combining those.

9. コーヒーが冷めないうちに - 川口俊和: This book just didn’t do it for me. I listened to it on audiobook in February for a target language listening challenge and got stuck in a vicious cycle of not paying attention because the story was boring me and being bored of it because I wasn’t paying enough attention. Most other people I’ve seen who have read it in Japanese also thought it was boring, though, so I’m not mourning any loss.

8. 宝石商リチャードの謎鑑定 - 辻村七子: I really wanted to like this series but the negatives outweighed the positives so much that I only read the first volume. The most damning part of this for me was that I couldn’t stand the writing style. It was extremely confusing, and having a language barrier on top of that just made it miserable. I’m really glad I read this with others because I was not the only one who found the writing style to be ridiculously confusing for a book that doesn’t even handle confusing or difficult topics. Seriously, the writing was so bad that I considered continuing the series in English. But the characters were good.

7. あん - ドリアン助川: Now we get into the books that I enjoyed, just not as much. I liked this book well enough, but it was just a bit middling. I wasn’t overly invested in the characters or story and I found myself wondering how on earth this story could go on for another hundred pages. It was sweet, but ultimately I don’t think the story will stick with me at all.

6. ちょっと今から仕事やめてくる - 北川恵海: This was another audiobook read and although I know I enjoyed it, I really don’t remember much about it. I’m also not sure if the twist, which I did think was really good, actually happened or was something I misunderstood (I’m pretty sure I understood it though). Overall, this one goes on the to-reread pile, just as soon as I can find a physical copy of it.

5. 旅猫リポート - 有川浩: This was an adorable story perfect for cat lovers, but the end had me a little bored. Honestly though, it was quite the experience to go from being a bit bored to crying my eyes out in the span of ten pages. The writing style and the main cat’s perspective was super charming as well.

4. 人間失格 - 太宰治: This was my first classic in Japanese and wasn’t as difficult as I expected. Dazai’s writing style is a pain in the ass, but I will admit that it started to grow on me as the book went on and now I find it endearing. It also wasn’t as depressing as I had heard it was, and I really enjoyed getting a perspective of that time period.

3. 美しい彼 - 凪良ゆう: I only read one volume of this, probably exclusively because I suddenly couldn’t stand romance when I had fifty pages left of this. What can I say, I love a good toxic gay romance. The writing style is chronically readable and the story is super engaging.

2. No. 6 - あさのあつこ: I’m a fan of the anime for this and the novels have not let me down. I’ve only read two so far, but the story and characters are super gripping. I really love the emphasis on dialogue in this series, I really feel like it makes the characters pop more. The only problem I have is this odd quirk in Asano’s writing style, where the majority of the series is told from third person point of view, but will suddenly switch to first person point of view for a single sentence. It’s not enough to deter me, but it is a little odd to see.

1. キノの旅 - 時雨沢恵一: My number one favorite read in Japanese this year and no one should be surprised. I’m a massive Kino fan and read three volumes this year. I love books that I can analyze the hell out of and this is exactly that. Additionally, I think the writing style and the way both Kino and Hermes are characterized adds so much to both the stories and the underlying meanings that Shigusawa is trying to get across.

Let's read what she said then

何時 まで 寝て んだい ダナ 兵士 ども! Itsu made nete ndai dana hēshi domo!

何時まで how long, until when. 寝て to sleep. んだい plain and informal んですか. Here it's い instead of か (guestion sentence mark), ん makes it a confirming question and んだ also can express realizations with the nuance of “Oh, gotcha”. 兵士 soldiers. ども indicates plural and shows contempt, disrespect when talking about others. Something like "you, scums / bastards..."

"You're just gonna lie there, aren't you, not-good soldiers?!" (Or more rude)

And that "How dare you to call me yours?! I'm gonna cut / eat your ears off!" 耳喰い千切るよ Mimikuichigiruyo

More about her we can learn from this: 先週 まで 和菓子屋 の 店番 だった 妾 を アンタ が 無理やり 徴用したんだろ. Sensū made wagashiya no miseban datta atashi o anta ga miriyari shōyō shita n daro.

先週まで before the last week. 和菓子屋 shop where you buy wagashi, japanese sweets. 店番 shop assistant. だった the end of plain and informal, not-past sentence. "Before the last week l was a shop assistant in the bakery, ..."

The strangest part is kanji 妾. Dictionary says, it means concubine or mistress. But in manga it's another word!

The kanji readings are ショウ (shoo, しょお), めかけ (mekake, メカケ), そばめ (sobame, ソバメ), わらわ (warawa, ワラワ). In manga we read it as atashi, アタシ, one of female pronouns.

Yosano always use it as pronoun in all chapters.

But atashi hasn't kanji.

Japanese kanji it's Chinese kanji but read by another way. In Chinese 妾 is: concubine; I, your servant (deprecatory self-reference for women)

In old Japanese わらわ 妾 warawa used to use instead of watakushi, the most official female pronoun

See? It can be a pronoun. But why? First of all, it's manga, honey! Asagiri can do it if he want. Deprecatory nuance is reference to Yosano's thoughts about herself "People dying even when I do everything I can", " It's because of me", "if only I wasn't there", " I couldn't forgive myself (before chapter 68)". Another thing is one theory about origin of kanji 妾. Now it's 立+女, but in the past it could be 辛 (“torture device”) + 女 (“woman”) = female criminal (isn't it close to her?)

アンタ = you, may be used to express either contempt or affection, depending on tone and context. Yosano very rude with all of them, if it was affection, she would use another words (maybe less rude words at all and "anata", not "anta") Here anta also express her anger.

無理やり against one's will. 徴用 (+する) to conscript, to employ. した is informal する (suru, to do) in the past form. だろ alternative for だろう (darō), informal adverb expressing someone's subjective opinion.

"... But you made me work here even if I didn't want" (or "even didn't give me a choice")

No polite words, this girl doesn't care about subordination at all 😋

She can show compassion and care, that is the essence of the ability and her soul. She asks soldier who made the hair ornament, "Are you okay? Don't you have any pain?" 躰は平気かい? Even if she already healed him. She is like Gogol. Both are 25/26 years old. Why he murdered people? Why she hurts people almost to the death before healing? Both don't accept the most sensitive and vulnerable part of themselves and don't want to show it. Because of trauma.

今回のコンサートは、EXOからはスホが参加した、ウィンターアルバム「2022 Winter SMTOWN：SMCU PALACE」のタイトル曲『The Cure』のMVでスタート！

EXOはクリスマスの雰囲気溢れる『The First Snow』、そしてキレッキレのパフォーマンスでお届けした『Love Shot』のステージでコンサートを盛り上げました♪

ソロステージでは、スホが『Let's Love』、チェンが『Last Scene』のステージで心にぐっと届くような歌声を、シウミンは『Brand New』、カイは『Mmmh』をそれぞれの個性あふれる魅力的なパフォーマンスを披露しました！ チャンヨルとセフンはEXO-SCとしてもパフォーマンス！スホを迎えて『Fly Away』を、そして『Rodeo Station』もお届けしましたがいかがでしたか？

SMTOWN LIVE featured not only groups that everyone is familiar with, but also some entirely new matchups of artists that normally do not perform together. This was what made the concert so special! Taking the stage this time was a special collaboration between senior and rookie idols.♪

First up was Kai who took the stage alongside Red Velvet's Seulgi, NCT's Jeno, and aespa's KARINA to perform the song 'Hot & Cold'! Suho performed alongside KANGTA, SUPER JUNIOR's Yesung, NCT's Taeil and Renjun to perform 'Happier'.♪ Chanyeol gave a sweet performance of his Raiden collaboration song 'Yours' alongside NCT's Mark and aespa's WINTER!^^

Fragaria Memories Collab Cafe menu translation

I'm sure a translation is already out there, but I'll throw my hat in the ring for the fun of it. At the moment I've only translated the titles, but I'll probably come back and translate all the descriptions. I'm no professional by any means (a lot of my translations are purely vibe-based) and I'll leave notes for things that are weird.

As always, feel free to let me know if anything's off with the translations! My ask box is open (and I believe you can comment anonymously if you'd like).

(Also pleasantly surprised that the menu is pretty broad compared to a lot of collab cafes I've seen. I think the speculation was that we'd get a main meal per Bouquet and then some random sides or drinks.)

Notes:

I'm sure people know about rakkyo, but for the sake of it I'll just note that this is what it is. It's a side dish often paired with Japanese curry.

So this by far gave me the most trouble, mostly because I had no idea what マンリーメス is and any articles on it were from 2017 about a cafe in Japan claiming that they're popular in Australia. (They weren't, from what I can tell.) A theory posed to me is that a cafe somewhere in Australia (likely Manly, Sydney) had an eton mess on their menu called a "Manly Mess".

Noting here that I... really have no idea what Merold's dish's title actually is. This is my best guess considering the kanji and the vibes I get from it.

Whatever's going on with Pikero's dish, I had a hard time translating it. There's nothing really implying that the matcha whipped cream is made from 'your logic' nor is that really the vibe I get, but I'm not quite sure how else to translate it.

Just wanted to note here that "white water" probably means it's a yoghurt-based drink, according to one of my sources.
