Ny kapten, nya ordrar!

Vi seglar på lördag morgon. Det är det senaste budet. Vinden är fördelaktig, både i riktning och styrka, men det blir direkt mot Karibien och inte via Kap Verde. Inte mig emot, det innebär fler dagar i Karibien!

Den nya besättningen består av 8 olika nationaliteter, i ålder från 25-årsåldern till 68 somrar. Bland annat en svensk kille till! Riktigt trevligt att prata lite svenska ibland, dessutom med en rejält trevlig och äventyrlig prick som heter Jonatan!

Självklart var det de två swedish chefs som skötte kvällens middag. :-)

Tårar för Alexander

Jag skrev det här manuset för en föreläsning där vi skulle ge boktipsar för varandra. Jag bestämde mig för att prata om Björn Collarps debutroman Tårar för Alexander eftersom min avhandling också handlar om den och jag vill försöka göra romanen lite mer känd. Troligtvis finns det människor här på Tumblr som är intresserade i den svenskspråkliga queerlitteraturen och har aldrigt hört om denna roman. Det är därför jag delar texten här också. FYI: svenska är inte mitt förstaspråk så jag ber om ursakt för mina grammatiska misstager.

Hej hej!

Idag ska jag prata om en bok som visade sig vara livsförändrande för mig och som ledde till att jag upptäckte en del av svensk litteratur som jag förhoppningsvis kan utforska djupare i framtiden.

När jag först läste titeln av boken, omnämnd i en masteruppsats, blev jag genast nyfiken. Tårar för Alexander heter boken. Vem är Alexander, tänkte jag, och vem gråter för honom? Vad hände? Tårar är mäktiga litterära enheter, det visste jag redan, och eftersom masteruppsatsen handlade om den svenska queerlitteratursvågen hade jag några föraningar om vad jag kan förvänta mig med tanke på att boken kom ut 1985.

Men nu kör vi. Handlingen börjar i Kent, England, 1981. Alexander Berg, huvudkaraktären, en nittonårig svensk kille jobbar i ett hem för utvecklingsstörda barn. Dagen före julafton träffar han Alexander Clewe, en fem år äldre tyska kille från Berlin som ska också jobba där. Första meningen av romanen låter så här:

”Redan första gången vi träffades blev jag förälskad.”

Vad trevlig, tänkte jag, en lovande början! Tyvärr försvinner hoppet att romanen inte präglas av den negativa, nedsättande synen på homosexuella väldigt snabb, men det är något jag ska tala om lite senare.

En av de första saker jag noterade i boken var den utomordentliga narrativen. Det är tydligt att berättarens person är Alexander Berg, men han använder inte bara första person singular narration vilket kallas för jag-form utan också andra person singular. Den så kallade du-form är inte alls vanlig. Ärligt talat, jag är inte så överdrivet förtjust i jag-formen, men det sätt den förekommer i boken, kombinerad med du-formen gjorde att jag inte kunde stänga boken. Jag brukar vara kritiskt mot berättandet eftersom jag har skrivit noveller sedan jag var nio så jag har personlig erfarenhet i ämnet, men vad som finns i Tårar för Alexander förvånar mig. I allmänhet används jag-formen, men när det gäller Alexander Clewe ändras den till du-formen. Här kan ni se några exemplar.

Medan i England avkriminaliserades sexuella handlingar mellan män 1967 betyder det naturligtvis inte att homofobi upphörde att existera. Att vara öppet med ens sexuell läggning om man inte var heterosexuell var otänkbar. De två Alexander måste därför hålla sin förhållande hemligt, vilket blir svårare och svårare. Trots den fientliga miljön bestämmer de sig att förlova sig och de växlar ringar i den anglikanska katedralen i Liverpool i början av maj. För en kort tid hinner de bo tillsammans i en lägenhet i Stourbridge, en sovstad nära Birmingham, men Alexander Clewe är tvungen att återvända till Västtyskland annars ska hans föräldrar stödja honom finansiellt inte längre. Under sommaren upprätthåller de en brevkorrespondens och i augusti blir Alexander Berg erbjuden till Berlin av hans pojkväns fader. Låt mig säga att det inte händer av ren vanlighet.

I Berlin blir det lite bättre, först, men sedan kommer svårigheterna som verkligen testar förhållanden de två Alexander har byggt upp. Är kärlek alltid tillräcklig för att hålla två människor ihop, eller behövs det något mer, något annat? Ni får läsa boken och bestämma själv.

Det finns tre saker jag gillar mest i boken.

Den första är dialogerna. De är inte alltför komplicerade, de strömmar som en bäck med starka, expressiva ord och om man läser noggrant kan man höra karaktärers röst.

Den andra är att vi lär känna skärvor av de två Alexanders förflutna. Till exempel, att Alexander Berg har en lillasyster som bor hos fosterföräldrar i Stockholm eftersom fadern inte kan ta hand om henne och modern är död, eller att Alexander Clewe har en utvecklingsstörd storebror som bor i ett speciellt hem och föräldrarna besöker honom nästan aldrig.

Den tredje är att det finns många paralleller mellan handlingen och mitt liv samt mellan Alexander Bergs och min personlighet. Min bästa vän föreslog att jag skulle kunna översätta romanen till ungerska och engelska, kanske jag ska göra det någon gång i framtiden, vem vet?

Till sist vill jag säga några ord om författaren. Han heter Björn Collarp och tyvärr han dog 2009. Det vore jättekul att kunna prata med honom, särskilt eftersom jag har en liten teori kring varför båda huvudkaraktärer kallas för Alexander. Väldigt liten information finns på nätet om honom, men jag fick reda på att han hade en livskamrat, psykiatern Thorbjörn Nerdrum. Alltså, deras namn är nästan den samma: Björn och Thorbjörn. Har det någonting att göra med de två Alexander? Kanske.

Jag kan bara rekommendera romanen för alla som är intresserade i den svenskspråkiga queerlitteraturen.

he Hieromartyr Timothy, Bishop of Prusa (Bithynia), received from the Lord the gift of wonderworking because of his purity and sanctity of life. At Prusa he converted many pagans to the faith in Christ. The emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363), upon hearing about Saint Timothy, had him locked up in prison, but even there also the saint continued to preach the Gospel. Julian forbade him to teach about Jesus Christ, but the saint continued to spread the Christian Faith. Finally, the emperor gave orders to behead the saint. His holy relics were afterwards transferred to Constantinople.

St John Maximovitch, Metropolitan of Tobolsk (1715)

Saint John, Metropolitan of Tobolsk and All Siberia, the Wonderwonder, in the world was named John Maximovitch, and he was born in the city of Nezhino in 1651. His father Maxim Vasil’evich and mother Euphrosyne had seven sons, of which John was the eldest. Upon his completion of the Kiev-Mogilyansk College (afterwards the Kiev Spiritual Academy), the future hierarch emerged from it as a teacher of the Latin language. Thereafter, in 1680, he accepted monasticism at the Kiev Caves monastery and became absorbed in inner spiritual activity. With the general consent of the brethren, the young monk was given the obedience of preaching. From this period he demonstrated an exceptional eloquence. He attached a special significance to inner religious knowledge. The chief theme of his life can be defined at a stroke as, “How ought man to conform his will with the will of God?” He developed this theme both in his preachings, and in his subsequent missionary service. In answer to it appeared the work, published towards the end of his long ascetic life, and entitled “Heliotropion” or “Sunflower,” or “Conforming the Human Will to the Divine Will.” Of the many works of the holy Fathers of the Orthodox Church, this work gives a very thorough answer to this great question of Christian soteriology.

In 1688 they sent him on a mission to Moscow. There he was appointed by Patriarch Joachim (1674-1690) as vicar of the Briansk-Svensk monastery, which was then under the Kiev Caves Lavra.

Saint Theodosius, Archbishop of Chernigov, in 1695 shortly before his own death (February 5) appointed Hieromonk John as Archimandrite of the Chernigov Eletsk monastery, and designated him as his successor as bishop. (Saint John revered the memory of Saint Theodosius, believing in the power of his prayerful intercession before the Lord. Because of his faith, he received healing from a serious illness through the prayers of Saint Theodosius. At the very height of the sickness, Saint Theodosius appeared to him and said, “Serve tomorrow, you will be well.” On the following day Saint John, completely well and to the amazement of everyone, served the Divine Liturgy. First Chinese priest and the Chinese new martyrs of the Boxer uprising

On the great and saving day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, as Christ had promised (John 16:7-15). The unlearned fishermen were made wise by divine grace, proclaiming the Gospel of Christ and teaching with authority. Most of them (except for Saint John the Theologian) sealed their labors with their own blood. This was the beginning of the Church's mission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18), which continues even to the present day.

In 1685, the Russian Orthodox Church established an Orthodox mission in Peking (now Beijing). For more than two hundred years, some of the Chinese converted to Christianity, and married Russian spouses.

Because of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, against the foreign powers occupying China, these Chinese Christians were given the choice of renouncing Christianity, or being tortured and killed.

Two hundred and twenty-two members of the Peking Mission, led by their priest, Father Metrophanes Chang (Chang Tzi-tzung) refused to deny Christ, and received incorruptible crowns of glory.

Among these Holy New Martyrs are Saint Metrophanes, his wife Tatiana, his sons John and Isaiah, Isaiah's fiancée Maria; the church school teachers Paul Wang and Ia Wen; and many others.

What do you suggest a beginner learns about Swedish culture and how ? ( I just learned about fika and I’m kinda sad it’s not common in more places 😭)

haha well first off, i think fika is a perfect place to start, you’re on the right path!

i think some more or less essential parts of our culture and history that you should know about would be

sweden is a monarchy

most people, unless they’re like 80, we’re probably raised on Astrid Lindgren at least to some extent, it wouldn’t hurt to know a bit about her work or maybe even read some of her books, it would also be good swedish practice 

we have ABBA, Ted Gärdestad, Monica Zetterlund and we like them very much

Ingmar Bergman would be good to know about, or have seen. some of his most popular films are The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet), Fanny & Alexander, Summer with Monika (Sommaren med Monika)

we have a sibling-esque relationship with denmark and norway

we’re very informal, which is quite apparent in our language compared to, say, french

it would probably not be the best idea to try to read if you’re a beginner (or even proficient, since the language generally is quite outdated) but i think you should be aware of classic authors like Hjalmar Söderberg, August Strindberg, Victor Rydberg, Selma Lagerlöf 

you should know a bit about the geography, where’s Stockholm, where’s Göteborg, Härjedalen, Skåne, Jämtland, Bohuslän? you can practice on seterra x x

sweden’s nationalday is june 6th, both because that’s the day when Gustav Vasa became king and broke the Kalmar union 1523, a union between the scandinavian countries, and because that’s the day when the power of the royalty declined and sweden took mayor steps into becoming a democracy, 1809

our current king’s name is Carl XVI Gustav (pronounced Carl den sextonde Gustav)

Gustav the third, also known as the “theater king” was king in the 18th century and much like the couture of the time was a huge francophile. during “den gustavianska eran” (the era in which he ruled) the swedish court adapted a huge fascination for french culture and a lot of french vocabulary. he’s the reason why we have words like “apropå” (a propos), “journalism”, (journalisme), “paraply” (paraplui), “trottoar”, (trottoir). (he also made up an entire war with russia for no reason other than making himself seem a bit more powerful) you can read a list of french loanwords in swedish here x

Ocean's Eight (2018) [US]

¡Oi! Spoilers, stavfel och alternativa fakta kan förekomma rakt föröver!

VAD? Debbie Ocean (syster till Danny Ocean från Oceans 11–13) hinner knappt ut från fängelset, från vilket hon släppts för gott uppförande. Hon stiger ut från grindarna med siktet inställt på en 150 miljonerskupp. Tillsamman med vapendragaren Lou samlar hon ett gäng kvinnor att stjäla smycken från Usa:s mest prestigefulla gala. Gary Ross (känd som killen som trodde på Hungerspelen) står inte bara för regin för den här slicka heist-filmen, han har även skrivit manus ihop med Olivia Milch.

VEM? Den här filmen har många trevliga namn i rollistan som spelar snällt om utrymmet. Sandra Bullocks "Debbie" står givetvis i centrum, och man inser tidigt att hon har flera bollar i luften. Tillsammans med Cate Blanchett ("Lou"), Helena Bonham Carter ("Rose Weil), Mindy Kaling ("Amita") Rihanna ("Nine Ball"), Sarah Paulson ("Tammy"), Awkwafina ("Constance") formerar man ligan som genom "Daphne Kluger" (Anne Hathaway) lyckas stjäla ett halsband för 150 millar. Jag gillar balansen man hr mellan karaktärerna, det finns inga partier där det uppstår onödiga intriger och slitningar och trots att man känner på förhand att "Debbie" har mer på G än bara en halsbandsstöld så finns det en professionell tillit mellan karaktärerna. Och i slutändan är det ingen som blir snuvad på kollekten heller -- tvärt om. (Om man bortser från "Debbies" ex, "Claude Becker" (Richard Armitage), då.

VAR? Inspelad på plats i New York (en stad som känns nästan lite som hemma fast man aldrig varit där 😊). Enligt vad jag kan gräva fram är scenerna från fängelset (iaf vissa av dem) inspelad på Arthur Kill Correctional Facility.

HUR? Som svensk är det svårt att se en sådan hr film utan att samtidigt tänka på Jönssonligan. det här är dock en film utan slapstickhumor och serietidningskaraktärer. Den är väldigt mycket rakt upp och ned och bjuder kanske inte på några stora överraskningar. det gör det dock inte till någon dålig film, det kan vara skönt med en film som känns rätt avslappnad rakt igenom. Det hela toppas med ett soundtrack som påminner på snut- och deckarfilmer från 60- och 70-talet.

SÅ? Kanske tjänar jag på att inte ha sett Oceans 11, 12 och 13. Men jag gillar den här filmen och dess avslappande stil. Det är rätt skönt med en heist-film som inte inkluderar biljakter och en massa pang-pang.

NÄR? Spelade in nästan 300M världen över, borde väl klassas som ett godkänt betyg på en 70M-budget. En uppföljare lär dock inte komma på tal, Sandra Bullock är notoriskt emot sådana. Kanske är det därför ämnet inte luftas alls när jag läser om filmen. Och kanske behöver inte alla sevärda filmer ha uppföljare heller.
