Of Anne's gentlewomen, Mary Shelton, a confidante of Bess Holland, was closest to her. Other favoured gentlewomen included Elizabeth Hill, Thomas Isley of Sundridge's daughter, who married Henry's serjeant of the cellar. Anne had known her since their fathers sat together as magistrates in Kent. Margaret Gamage, the daughter of a Welsh knight, was Jane Parker's cousin.

Really? I think the Department of Transport are a little late in addressing this issue!
Tumblr media
Let me go through this as an independent observer:
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. These ban most motor vehicles from using roads in mainly residential areas. Not practical, and many residents are against them as they increase traffic congestion/pollution on main roads.
20mph zones. These are sensible near schools, or in other areas where there are a large amount of pedestrians. Every urban road in Wales now has a speed limit of 20mph... as well as many roads in the London area. I agree that slower speeds reduce the risk of serious injury, but on wide roads with clear visibility it causes drivers to become frustrated... and some enraged motorists will take unnecessary risks to get pass the slow moving traffic. [My personal gripe is that drivers do not look at road signs... so, even when they are allowed to go faster they still drive at 18mph!]
Stop councils profiting from traffic restrictions. I hope this happens... but. I have my doubts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now begins a few miles from my Kent residence on the boundary of Greater London. It does little, if anything to reduce pollution levels!
Upgrade traffic lights. Yes... this is something needs to be done, and monitored on a regular basis. Since early January gas main replacement work has been taking place on the A25 close to my Kent residence. The boys in charge of the temporary traffic signals have been onsite most days between 6am and 6pm to try and minimise delays (and they have done a good job... most of the time. Thank you.) They also changed the phase of the permanent traffic lights at Sundridge, which has helped.
Faster roadworks. How, for goodness sake? What does need to be done is better planning. In point 4, I mentioned the gas main replacement work currently being done close to where I live. Under the same section of road is a high pressure water main which has burst several times in recent years. I think local residents may be a little bit annoyed if Thames Water decide to renew this pipeline just after three months of disruption caused by the gas company's work!

e-ARC Review: An Island Princess Starts a Scandal
Tumblr media
A HUGE thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin Trade for providing me an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:  Manuela del Carmen Caceres Galvan is soon to be trapped in a loveless marriage. Invited to show her paintings at the 1889 Exposition Universelle came at the perfect time, Manuela has given herself one last summer of freedom in Paris.  Cora Kempf Bristol, Duchess of Sundridge, is known for her ruthlessness in business. She chases power to secure her position among her rivals. There is an opportunity to secure it with the purchase of land for a railway. How difficult could it be to convince the mercurial Miss Caceres Galvan to part with land she’s sworn never to sell? Tempted by Cora’s offer, Manuela proposes a trade: her beloved land for a summer with the duchess in her corner of Paris. A taste of the wild, carefree world that will soon be out of her reach. What follows thrills and terrifies Cora, igniting desires the duchess long thought dead. As they fill their days indulging in a shared passion for the arts and their nights with dark and delicious deeds, the happiness that seemed impossible moves within reach…though claiming it would cause the greatest scandal Paris has seen in decades.
RELEASE DATE: May 30, 2023

What better way to close Lesbian Visibility Week than with a review of a steamy sapphic romance you won’t want to miss?
An Island Princess Starts a Scandal is actually a second book in a series. Adriana Herrera first introduced readers to most of the cast in book one of Las Leonas: A Caribbean Heiress in Paris. While you don’t need to read the first installment to understand or enjoy the second, I do caution readers who are afraid of spoilers to start from the beginning. There is an overlapping timeline which naturally leads to minor spoilers for the first installment.
That said, let’s get right to the good stuff.
I adored this book! Manuela and Cora are clearly founded in some time-honored romcom tropes (example: sunshine one loves grumpy one). But they bring fully realized backstories and personalities that prevent them from feeling like placeholders. Neither woman is perfect. Each has her flaws that get in her way. Manuela is simultaneously impulsive and flighty but still terrified to free herself from her controlling, homophobic family. Cora is generous and courageous, but she can also be highhanded and controlling. Each has to work on herself in order to make their love successful, and Herrera gives them both the necessary scope to do so.
I also enjoyed the way that Herrera clearly used research into the era to ground her story in actual history. Though I complain frequently about the fact that it’s hard to find happy sapphics and electricity in the same story, I do have to admit that it was a joy to see Herrera make use of a real, thriving, and loving queer community for her fiction. Not all of history is about pain and homophobia. We’ve always been here, and we’ve always found ways to bring our light to the world.
Finally, I salute the way that Herrera writes the actual acts of women loving women. Cora and Manuela are described in real ways. They are bodies that one can actually picture instead of imagining some idealized barbie doll forms. And Cora and Manuela describe each other’s realistic bodies with genuine desire. Their sexual encounters feel grounded in a genuinely sapphic perspective. This isn’t meant to titillate pruriently curious straight people. These are two women who adore every inch of each other and do so fearlessly. The reader can feel their love--and attraction--in every description.
So, if you’re looking for a steamy, tender romance full of love and joy? I can’t recommend this book strongly enough. It’s the perfect way to kickstart Pride for women who love women.

Hi I saw your tags on Anne-the-Quene's poll and you said Anne Boleyn's memory was preserved by generations of women. Could you elaborate on that please? Thanks.
Absolutely! This was a discovery made years ago; and a really emotionally compelling one that I hope causes others to rethink some of the most enduring narratives about Anne (even recently I’ve come across the same tired stereotype, namely that she could not get along with other women, much less maintain friendships with them and preferred the company of men… not reflected by the contemporary account of irreverence towards men from her ladies during ‘pastime in her chamber’ considering the Queen set the tone of her own rooms/court, either, yet many really seem to believe that she was , in modern parlance , a Bruh Girl because it serves narratives they’re attached to):
“I was lucky enough to closely study Anne’s printed prayerbook last January and the findings I uncovered during my research have important implications for Anne’s sixteenth-century afterlife, memory and reputation in the years after her downfall. For what I discovered, by deciphering four further notes within the book that had later been erased, was a complex network of owners who bravely chose to cherish Anne’s memory through the simple act of protecting her book. This was a defiant, communal act between a group of primarily women, who ensured Anne’s memory stayed alive with those who once had, and valued, a personal connection to her. Anne was not entirely forgotten.
By uncovering partial transcriptions of each further note within Anne’s printed Hours, I was able to see the signed names of those who had owned and used the book after Anne. Three out of four of these names were female: Elizabeth Shirley, Philippa Gage, and Mary West. Elizabeth Shirley and Philippa Gage were sisters, and Mary West was their niece. The sole male inscription came from Philippa’s husband, John Gage. Several interesting stories emerge from these names. It is particularly notable that the book was evidently kept safe within the trusted hands of one, extended family. Certainly, if the book had fallen into outside hands the consequences for those who were harbouring Anne’s note and book would have been significant. It would have been a blatant display of disloyalty to the king. Also notable is that the members of this family who kept Anne’s book safe were all local to the Kent area, and to the Boleyns at Hever.
Indeed, the connection between Anne herself and these other users of her book comes through, I believe, a woman named Elizabeth Hill. Interestingly, this is another female connection. Hill was also born and raised in Sundridge in Kent which is only eight miles away from Anne’s childhood home at Hever. She was at court at the same time as Anne, having married Richard Hill, the serjeant of the king’s cellar. Hill was the daughter of Elizabeth Shirley, one of the authors of the newly uncovered inscriptions. Thus, it seems as though Anne passed her book to Elizabeth Hill, with whom she shared a personal connection, be that a friendship from court or simply a common experience of locality and background. Elizabeth Hill then kept this book safe by passing it between close members of her family: her mother, her aunt, her uncle, her cousin. These people bravely chose to protect the book, and Anne’s place within it, in order to privately cherish her memory. Despite Anne’s widespread dishonouring, and attempts to erase her from the narrative, the newly-deciphered inscriptions within Anne’s prayerbook tell a different tale of women who remembered Anne, just as she had demanded.”

The Moon will reach it's peak of fullness at 17:54 GMT on 25th January 2024.
The Wolf Moon... in many cultures wolves are believed to have a close association with the Moon. It is the start of the mating season, and wolves howl louder in order to establish their territory and find a mate.
While there are no 4-legged wolves in England (as far as we know)... there were some unusual events close to my Kent home around the Full Moon of November 27th 2023, that could indicate we may have some 2-legged versions.
The remains of six brutally slaughtered sheep were scattered over a garden in Otford Lane, Halstead. A few days later, the entrails of another two sheep were discovered in a layby in Sundridge, Kent... about 3 miles from my haunted house.
I hold a firearms licence... and have silver bullets at the ready!
