Bro I have to say this I swear-
I see people trying everything to make it seem like Wukong is a lot worse then he is. I understand you like Macaque, I do too! But the entire point of their relationship is that they’re both in the wrong. The difference is, Wukong got, well, character development. It just feels super annoying to discredit Wukongs hard work in JTTW because of things he did prior.
I’m not saying Wukong is some saint, or an amazing person even while the story is taking place, but he is NOT as bad as some of the people in the LMK fandom make him out to be. I assume it’s because Macaque is the goth shy boy (/hj? /lh), but Macaque literally comes out just to manipulate MK and steal his powers. He’s making the exact same mistakes Wukong did, fighting for power so that he can protect himself. Get stronger. Etc.
Season 4 Special Spoilers:
I don’t think Wukong was ignorant in saying that Macaque doesn’t come to help him. I mean, he got beaten by the Jade Emperor and presumably everyone just left him there and ran off. I’d be pretty mad too. Of course, Macaque was hesitant to begin with, and that’s fair. But he was already there, he could’ve tried. But Macaque has a habit of shying away from fights, only really fighting others to settle a score (S1 E9) or if he has to (LBD arc - both working for and against her, but the S1 E9 relates here, too.) I’m not saying this as an insult, more of an observation. He’s not a coward by any means, a coward would be Peng, who leaves mid-battle in fear of being hurt or losing. Macaque finishes his fights (still knowing when it’s reasonable to retreat), but more often then not prefers to prevent them in the first place. (WHICH IS WHY THE DIVORCE SCENE HITS SO HARD, you know he’s been bottling that up ;v;)
ANYWAY back on topic. I definitely think everything Wukong said there was true. I don’t think he was trying to lie or manipulate Macaque by saying “everything I did was for us”. This is further confirmed when we see him later, tired and completely defeated.
Tumblr media
He has nothing to hide here. He’s at his lowest point, stuck in a mountain, tensions high from being abandoned by his sworn brothers, being abandoned by people he held dear. Macaque was trying to be nice, but if I were stuck in a mountain and offered food from someone who left me in such a vulnerable state? I probably wouldn’t take the it either. ALSO. We still have NOT seen these things from Wukongs perspective! Every single time something is revealed from his past, it’s narrated by Tang, Azure, Macaque, etc. Wukong has never (from my memory) spoken about his trials first-hand. This is why I love the guy so much!! What’s going on in his head? How does he feel about these things?
These are such complex characters who have been through so much, so it really bothers me when people look at Sun Wukong and decide to demonise him because of the past which, not only has he moved on from, but we have never even seen his side of the story on. Why did he kill Macaque? Did he kill Macaque? (I’ve seen theories he didn’t, we don’t know rn tho)
Tumblr media
Wukong went through a lot of pain to change. Wukong is haunted by his past and in genuine distress over it. You can’t tell me this isn’t a man filled with deep remorse for his actions.
He’s not perfect, but he’s a hell of a lot better. It just really frustrates me that people disregard and discredit the work he put in to get to this point.
THATS IT THATS THE POST
This is really disorganised I’m sorry, I just keep seeing people act like Wukong is the scum of the earth and I honestly just do not get it.
Please don’t send asks about this post, just reblog or comment.
I don’t want to deal with passive aggressive (or just straight up aggressive) people.
As a final note: No, Wukong is not perfect. He’s still a deeply flawed character even with his development. No, Macaque isn’t the scum of the earth. They both have their own problems and they both fucked up. They both did something wrong. That’s the point.

Is it me or is the new season of ij very meh? 😕. I wasn't even a huge Joe fan but I kinda wish they threw in the towel after Joe peaced out bc a spark is def missing
It was okay, but not something that grabbed me like before? Like, I still love them and maybe it’s because the fixation is fading a bit or the fact that I work ALL THE TIME, but I don’t feel a need to watch??? I barely watched any episodes this season ☹️ It’s like anything, it’s hard to replace an original. Not saying they’re trying to “replace” Joe, more like “fill in” for him, but it doesn’t hit the same as before 🫤

Read "Suki, Alone". Liked it in general. But can they please, please hire someone who knows both the show's actual events and how to follow through on a character arc? Because guys. Guys. That comic is not implying about Suki what they meant it to be implying, and all because of literally one line.
So like. From a writer's standpoint:
What they meant to do: show Suki as a community-oriented person who cares for her people, and believes in everyone succeeding together.
As opposed to (spoilers): the thief girl they set her up in contrast with, who's pretty upfront and consistent on primarily looking out for herself. She betrays Suki for one (1) corn chip to improve her own life at the prison, no surprise.
But the problem is: they give Suki an inspirational line to the effect of "we're all working together and we'll all break out together"
You know
The thing she does not do in the show
So if both the show and this comic are canon, then instead of setting up a compare/contrast with the thief girl, they've just set up a comparison. One were Suki is arguably worse, because she's been leading a significant number of prisoners on with her "we'll all fight and win our freedom together!" business, only to straight up cut them out of the escape loop and abandon them, whereas the thief is only leading Suki on in the sense that Suki keeps telling her what it's morally correct to think and confuses snide replies with agreement
My dudes. My fellow writers. You people actually being paid for this. There were so many ways to fix those awful implications against our girl's character, the simplest of which would be to not include that line. Or they could have, you know, made it canon compliant with what actually happens in the show, so that this comic doesn't set Suki up as a betrayer instead of a community builder. Like... just send all her good prison buddies off to other prisons in the wake of the warden finding out they're colluding. Have it timed to be right before the next new prisoners arrive, thus setting it immediately before the Boiling Rock episodes, so Suki didn't have anyone left in the prison she'd want to take with her on a breakout. For bonus points, include a page or two of her and her Kyoshi warriors opening up the cell of one of her prison friends post-war, thus implying she's tracking down and actually fulfilling her promises. Maybe even show her doing the same with thief girl, who was established as being imprisoned on false charges anyway, and also showing that Suki is A) the bigger person, and B) willing to acknowledge her own role in mistakes (because I cannot emphasize enough how much thief girl was not hiding her own priorities, and it was Suki who approached HER with all this, not the girl ever doing anything special to weasel her way in) (this would also open up an opportunity for paralleling Suki's earlier in-comic mistake of not listening to one of her friend's very valid thoughts and feeling, which lead to the girl leaving their island alone pre-canon; a "seeing people as they are, not what you want them to be" moment)
Anyway yeah enjoyable enough for a quick read but another one for the "this can't be canon or the characters are So Much Worse than they were in the actual show" pile
At least Aang didn't promise to murder anyone in this one

I like to think Sokka was Suki's bi awakening the same way Mulan was Shang's. As in Suki had been around girls her whole life, she knew she was into girls. She only realised after meeting Sokka that Guys Also Good

tags by @peony-pearl on this post that got me thinking about how gene yang writes sokka as if he is the ember island players’ portrayal of sokka (down to literally saying “wack a pow”). of course that episode is as much a parody of how the fans interpret these characters as it is an illustration of in-world colonial propaganda (and im sure the targeted audience being situated in the imperial core has nothing to do with that coincidence…) but surely, you’d think that a writer who was hired to write semi-canon paratext would understand the characters better than the fandombrained masses….
it makes me wonder if because sokka “endorsed” his portrayal in the episode, gene yang thinks that sokka “approved” of this play and it thus ought to lend itself to his characterization?? which doesn’t make sense regardless (a tv character should be interpreted on the basis of more than one singular episode), but it’s especially confusing considering that he doesn’t actually think that eip!sokka is an accurate portrayal, but rather that he finds it amusing. toph doesn’t actually think she’s a big buff man, but she isn’t enjoying the play for its fidelity to their experiences.
sokka and suki literally joking about their trauma during intermission should be an indicator of where they’re at regarding this play. while earnest, sensitive, straightforward aang, katara, and zuko take genuine offense at their portrayals, sokka and suki (the ones who wanted to go see the play in the first place) were always aware that this piece of colonial propaganda would be unflattering, and they approach it with a sense of ironic detachment and laugh (for the most part, sokka’s unprocessed yue trauma notwithstanding) at just how offensive and terrible it is.
while aang, katara, and zuko lament their offensive portrayals, sokka and suki sneak backstage so that sokka can suggest more jokes to the actor responsible for portraying him as shallow comic relief. sokka’s goal is to get laughs, not faithful representation, which he knows the fire nation would never actually grant him. the correct takeaway from that episode regarding sokka’s characterization is not that he acts like his actor counterpart in any way, but that he and suki would go to midnight screenings of the room together and throw spoons at the screen. i do think that faith erin hicks understands this. gene yang clearly does not.

Azula was probably lying when she was stalling Sokka during that Eclipse. Those Kyoshi Warriors are smart enough to not expose how close their relationship with Team Avatar actually is, and Suki definitely wouldn’t be lamenting about Sokka rescuing her to her captors. Sokka is from The Southern Water Tribe, and has been travelling with Aang. The odds on Sokka knowing somebody who was captured by The Fire Nation are extremely high. Azula probably made up a fake prisoner, kept those details extremely vague, and then kept absolutely fucking silent, and then let Sokka’s imagination, and his fear, fill in the rest of that.

Starscream deserved better.
The more and more transformer media I consume the more angry I get at the treatment of Starscream. He’s just desperately trying to survive.
OH YEAH BUT MEGATRON, THE ABSOLUTE ASSHAT?? The ABUSER?? He gets a redemption arc!!! Literally fuck OFF.
‘The decepticons are no more bc I now know what it’s like to be oppressed :(’ fuck off. The reason you are the way you are is because you liked the power. He already knew what it was like to be oppressed, because that was THE WHOLE FUCKING PREMISE OF THE WAR!
I haven’t finished the series but I’ve seen enough from previous iterations to know that this bullshit is going to drive me insane. Here’s an idea: stop giving abusers redemption arcs because you think they’re hot. How about we give redemption arcs to the victims (starscream) instead. OR JUST KEEP THEM BOTH EVIL! IDFC! BUT DONT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE STARSCREAM CANT BE REDEEMED AND MEGATRON CAN. Blatant victim blaming.
EDIT:
Tumblr media
Fuck you megatron simpers, if you were a decepticon and real etc. he’d fucking abuse you beyond the point of breaking. He’s an abuser. Deal with it.
I didn’t mean to come off so aggressive in this part, I apologise for that. Here I further explain what I mean. Please read the whole thing.
EDIT 2:
Just because I feel the need to say this: Im not excusing starscream or apologising him. He’s an asshole in every sense of the word, and he’s had his fair share of… shall we say “bad deeds”. He’s toxic. I’m not excusing that (it’s actually another reason I like him, the way he behaves and his personality intrigue me!). I actually also like Megatron in that way. He’s a character I love to hate sort of deal. And some people just love him! That’s also okay! What isn’t okay is the romanticisation and fetishisation of abuse. Don’t excuse either of these characters toxic behaviours just because he’s hot lmao.
My issue with it is that Megatron, who has done so much worse, got redeemed whereas Starscream is continually demonised or straight-up killed. It just makes no sense to me how Starscream, who continually throughout many iterations seems to have the most potential for redemption, is demonised. (if people want I could write an analysis on starscream to further explain because it would be fun).
Either redeem Starscream AND Megatron, or just Starscream.
