as many criticisms i have of mai as a character, i really disagree with the idea that her “just letting” azula stop the trade for tom tom shows that she doesn’t care about him or that she’s not afraid of azula. i actually find this to be the moment i feel the most sympathy for mai in the entire series.

don’t get me wrong—i don’t think she originally joined azula out of fear; i think she was more or less being honest when she said she would do anything to get out of omashu because she was bored.

but when azula halts the exchange and compromises tom tom’s safety, something shifts. the music becomes really tense. mai’s expression doesn’t change, but she takes a beat too long to answer, she looks to where sokka is holding tom tom, and then she agrees with azula anyway.

it wasn’t enough for azula for mai to join her because she wanted to—azula wanted mai to join her on her terms and to know that she held all the cards, that she could decide a trade for mai’s brother wasn’t worth giving up bumi as a prisoner and mai couldn’t say anything about it without risking treason.

and this is the moment i think is supposed to show that mai now understands the danger she actually is in, similar to the close-up of ty lee’s face at the circus as azula insists the net be set on fire and wild animals set loose.

ty lee says no originally, but then tries to protect herself by backtracking and claiming it’s the universe who wants her to join the mission. mai protects herself by never saying no at all, displaying a mask of apathy, and (though this is conjecture) maybe even hoping if she shows enough loyalty by not disagreeing, azula will reward her by changing her mind and help her get her brother back later.

thinking of mai's bond with tom-tom now - mai was EXTREMELY parentified - forced to do a lot of the actual raising while her parents do the showing-off - and it shows

god she’s just like me fr……. yeah I don’t think that’s really the case as we see in omashu (she basically just leaves without a second glance) but I do think that this dynamic would indeed develop after the war. her family would feel personally devastated and humiliated by their loss of power and mai would be the only one who actually approves of the regime change and its (ostensible) decolonizing/reconstructive efforts. so after a certain point she recognizes that tom tom will be a lost cause unless she actively intervenes and raises him herself, and suddenly the baby brother who always monopolized their attention is her responsibility in this very direct way, not only in terms of physically raising him but also being responsible for the edification of his very soul. but also it would be difficult to balance taking care of him with having a life beyond the fire nation, so I see him as getting passed around among her friends and spending time with a lot of very different people as he grows up and experiences a world beyond the superficial limits of aristocracy. anyway that is my ideal scenario for tom tom, because I think mai is way too loving to to just give up on him. but yeah she really does have such “eldest daughter who is held to an insane double standard and has learned to be perfect and obedient so as to never be criticized or punished” vibes it’s crazy.

I can see Kiyi and Tom-Tom becoming friends after the events of Smoke and Shadow

The two trying to convince their older siblings for playdates with them there. When really they trying to get their big brother & big sister back together and get married so they can be one big family.

(Which is my headcanon of a happy place where eventually the two have Izumi)

Just noticed how there are so many parallels between the way Zuko and Mai protect and cherish their little siblings in the comics. Its such a stark contrast to their own upbringings, and you can truly see how they take every measure to not repeat the same thing to Tom Tom and Kiyi. Especially in their respective interactions with Ukano and Azula.

The utter despair when they found out their siblings were first kidnapped.

The relief when they found out Kiyi and Tom Tom were okay.

Maj and Tom Tom with Ukano and Zuko and Kiyi with Azula

But nothing beats when they’re one big happy family.

My nearly feral baby Tom Tom.

In the nearly three years that we have lived here he has gone from being completely feral to coming in, eating whatever is there and then meowing for more, to knowing our routines and knowing that I feed the cats breakfast when I get up around 4:50 a.m. and showing up to get breakfast with the other team cats, and now he is to the point that when he is waiting for his food he will come and rub and bump against my legs. He will let me pet him while he eats but if I try to pet him any other time he will take a swipe at me though it is not with his claws out.

He looks like he has had a very hard life and who knows what he went through before he came here.

I keep a very small and low to the ground trash can in my room usually just for Kleenex but once in a while I'll throw the on paper plate in there when I'm finished eating. And Tom knowing this now comes and sniffs and Roots through my trash. It is because of this I found out he has a fondness for ranch dressing, but like any true story he will eat leftovers of almost anything. So this is him enjoying the leftovers from the cheese enchiladas that I ate last night.💙💚

Mai's issues and her inability to bond with Tom Tom in ATLA

I'm not writing this post to demonize Mai like some shippers like to, I'm sure Mai would come to love Tom Tom over time, but we have to look at how Kuan and Michi treated Mai which eventually made it difficult for her to bond with her younger brother for the time being:

Mai was an only kid for 15 years, we've seen on-screen in Retun to Omashu episode that Michi shut down any emotional expression from Mai and telling her what she should feel instead and (during Mai's upbringing) telling her daughter that she should only sit silently and not cause any trouble. You see that even in Zuko Alone flashbacks when Azula and Ty Lee were playing together, Mai was sitting silently besides the tree and doesn't know how to reach out to her crush. It's normal for a child to be talkative and active, but Michi and Ukano neglected her emotional needs and raising her to be silent, obedient, sitting in the background and be a "perfect" kid in every way. As a result, Mai had trouble not only in expressing emotions but how to process them too, so in The Beach she only know how to reacts with anger (tbh admittedly Zuko's behavior was crossing a line but still...).

So, when Azula said exchanging an important Earth King to a kid is unfair deal, Mai agreed with her logically because she's, on top of being emotional repressed, is a mind character just like Azula is. However, that doesn't mean she will leave Tom Tom either, she attacked the one who hold him directly after the deal was called off, so she sees why the King should be kept but that doesn't mean she will leave Tom Tom either now he's within hands reach. (Edit: I made a deeper introspection about the trade; basically Mai decided to keep the King to protect her father's career)

Mai already decided to leave to Azula's mission in a heartbeat when they met, and that when Tom Tom was already missing. I'll not put it past that Mai was capable of bonding with her childhood friends more than Tom Tom largely because they were present since her childhood and Ty Lee and Azula were fun and active who offers escapism from the restricted life she grows in. So she likes to spend time with them more.

Mai was also only 15-years-old kid and, typical of a teenager in this period, she was acting rebellious against her patents at that point in time.

Also, I think Mai was somewhat jealous of Tom Tom since he's exposed to the love that Mai barely remembers ever getting.

As I said before, I'm sure Mai would come to love Tom Tom over time. Despite being aloof and blunt Mai's a caring and very forgiving person by nature.
