i actually remember thinking when i was watching as a kid that the pupil jeong jeong was talking about was zuko, only to be Very Surprised when it was actually zhao but it actually makes so much sense that i'm not totally convinced it wasn't intentional on the writers' part. it's a microcosm of zuko trying to be the main antagonist of this book, only for zhao to show him up in that regard, but there's also very much a thematic idea that zhao is who zuko could become if he gives into his father's worldview fully and lets his rage and hate completely overtake him and uses his firebending only for destruction. in a way, zhao is who iroh is trying to prevent zuko from becoming. and the thing is, though zuko obviously still has a loooong way to go, by zhao being the main antagonist of this episode and zuko, in fact, not showing up at all, the episode sends the subtle message that zuko isn't there yet, that there is still hope for him to break away.

rewatching atla! s1e1 notes:
"i haven't done this since i was a kid" "you ARE still a kid!"
that ^ is absolutely the mini theme of this episode. and it's tied in beautifully with zuko's portions. when i first watched this show i was between katara and zuko's age, but as a 24 year old i just keep looking at zuko like "you are A CHILD aang is A CHILD you're all CHILDREN" it's so good and such a cool new way to view it
the logic of firebending is very cool and i'm sure i'll be normal about it as i rewatch
i love that katara gets to say "sexist" out loud. a sjw before her time. and i love sokka's dumb ass
this is a good show i love this show

ATLA Live Action Thoughts
Well hello there! After letting the events and creative choices of the Live Action ATLA show absorb for about 24 hours after finishing the series, I think it's time to put my thoughts to the page.
Yes, that was a mouthful of a sentence. Sorry about that.
To start things off, I loved it! Did I love every single part? Not exactly, but the creative choices and how everything was weaved together? YES! It felt exactly like a fairly well-put-together fanfiction for me. It incorporated loved pieces of the show while warping them slightly to fit within the creator's vision.
Now, we all like lists right? I know I do, so let's do some listing.
The Good:
The CGI for the fights was pretty well awesome alongside the choreography for the scenes. While some fights lacked a bit of depth (Katara vs Pakku) and certainly could have had more oomph with more length, I can still appreciate them for what they are.
To add to that, the bending looked freaking awesome! The earthbending had a signature ..crunch to it, water flowed, fire was punchy (though had one small bit to be desired - I'll address this later) and air was flighty.
The CGI creatures were great IMO. Momo was a little gremlin, which fits him perfectly. He was still cute in spite of his gremlinosity. Appa - I absolutely loved him. I think he's as good as he could possibly look in the media. He's still a ten-ton flying monstrosity of a bison, and he's perfect. He's fluffy. He's Appa. OSTRITCH HORSES! They were awesome and looked like living dinosaurs - nuff said.
The acting and line delivery, while rougher in the early episodes flourished as each episode went onward and the kids got more comfortable/experienced. You could really tell they were giving it their all, and I applaud them! Awesome work on their part!
Storytelling - the combination of different episode topics together flowed rather well! I really enjoyed them putting together the things they did.
And now for a bit of a read more for spoilers.
The storytelling was rather well done, especially things like adding Omashu, Jet and the freedom fighters, and the Mechanist (as well as the cave of the two lovers) together. Overall, it played well, and I'd like to think it was a good approach NOTE: This is from someone who is actively adapting the series in my own fanfic, and I can see aspects of that approach in the adaptation. I love to see it!
Ozai playing his children against each other is probably one of my favorite aspects of the entire thing! He's a manipulator in this version, which if they were going to have him on-screen rather than the ominous shadow emperor, then I think this was probably the only choice. I loved it.
----------------------------
The not good not bad:
Nudging the story in a darker direction was a choice. I know I just spoke at length about how I liked the creative choices and I'm not sure how I feel about this one. As someone who's throwing a lot of trauma at the characters in his fanfic, It can be a lot. To have that on screen is difficult since it can end up hiding characters' sense of being if not handled correctly.
Katara - in the animated show - always a go-getter, filled with righteous anger, not backing down, and strong-willed Katara - in the live-action show - fairly timid, but slowly growing over time into her strength of will. I wasn't a fan of the vision of Katara early in the season, but by the finale, it was starting to feel like her. (I still wish her fight with Pakku was better)
The family of Aang, Katara, and Sokka - I've seen quite a few posts talking about how they don't feel like a family in the live-action. In the animated show, after rewatching it recently, I feel like they didn't really grow toward a family unit until after the North Pole. They were good friends traveling together. Yes we had the line from the Southern Air Temple of 'We're your family now' but I don't think I truly felt it until season 2. Don't get me wrong, they were close, but I didn't get those true bonded feels until S2.
Iroh felt like Iroh half the time, and the other half, I'm not sure who he felt like, but it wasn't in a bad way? Like, we explored a different part of him. With his first interaction with Aang, we even saw him as the reluctant Fire Nation general. As he still was at that point. I can appreciate the change and don't mind it a ton.
Bumi. I think I've decided that Bumi was where Katara's righteous anger went. He doesn't immediately forgive Aang for disappearing, and then reappearing. Bumi has fought a war for a hundred years and has had to deal with ALL THAT for a hundred years. To say he'd be prickly is an understatement. Honestly? He has no reason to forgive Aang. I don't mind this change - though he could've toned down the dickishness IMO.
Katara's bending progression: In each episode of the show she improved both in skill and strength, when finally she fought Pakku, she used self-developed techniques. Those are the traits of a master bender. While we don't get to see her training with Pakku, or demonstrating that she truly has mastery over the element, we get shown that she has indeed grown immensely. A few extra training scenes would've gone a long way, especially with Aang.
Speaking of Aang. Aang had no water-bending training along the way north :( I would've liked to see that, but it's not a deal-breaker.
--------
The bad/meh- Let me preface this by saying I still love the show. There were a few moments that were lacking though (and one that was meh throughout):
The firebending, while amazing in almost EVERY SINGLE ASPECT, was lacking in one. FIREBLASTS AND FIREBALLS ARE SHOT FROM THE FIST, NOT GATHERED IN YOUR HAND LIKE CHI BLASTS. Sorry.
Katara. Where were your responses in some of those interactions? You sat there and listened (which in some cases is a good thing for someone expressing their emotions) but didn't respond when you could have/should have! I feel like we missed a bit of her character when we lost some of her in those. It's not enough to be a truly detracting piece of the show, but I should say that I wasn't a fan of that choice.
Roku was a bit...too unserious. He was the serious avatar in ATLA (in terms of brooding and wanting to help guide Aang.) He...got the Bumi jokes. That was an odd choice. I hope they revisit him in the future and he is able to redeem that aspect.
At the end, during the scene at the North where Aang gives himself over to the ocean spirit, I didn't really like the idea that the avatar was lost to the spirit. I also didn't like the "I need you" from Katara. Not from a shipping perspective, but from a character perspective. In the animated show, Katara spent a lot of effort showing that Aang is her hope for a better world. In the live-action, that wasn't there, so that line seemed out of place.
Hmm, four negative points. I'm sure there were more, but none are springing to mind at the moment, so perhaps I'll edit this later.
----------------
Final thoughts.
I need to stress that the likeability of the show hinges heavily on how you approach it. If you approached the live-action hoping for a perfect retelling of the ATLA story, then you are going to be severely disappointed. If you instead approach it for what it is - an adaptation of the story, with nudges events in one way or another, and includes new approaches, then you'll love it. I went in expecting a fanfiction type of show, and I think I got more than expected. The kids gave this thing their all, and it shows! Everyone showed improvement through the episodes and by the end really fell into their roles.
I certainly hope the future has another (2) season(s) lined up because I'd love to see what twists and turns we're in for.
Oh yeah, and scarf. I liked the scarf scene. There is no shipping bait in Omashu.

ive been rewatching atla recently (again) and goddd this series is just banger after banger after banger… so here are some of my thoughts:
“The Storm” and “The Blue Spirit” being back-to-back is insaaaneeeeeeee omg.. absolute peak
Any attempt at recreating Zuko’s scar in a live action so far is just way too fucking chill like?? Im sorry did anyone see the extent of the scarring?? His ear? His hair? Like be serious..
Why was the boulder kinda 💅🏻 and why did i not remember that
The worldbuilding is insane and I’m obsessed with the map (I usually dont gaf about maps in media soooorrryyy im a character > world girly, but here… ooh yes!!)
Appa and Momo are SUCH ghibli creatures i love them
I love a good mid-season finale… can we go back to shows having 20-24 episodes per season pleeeaaaaaseeee
Sokka is the canon “fandom bicycle”, while Zuko is the fanon one
Katara is so underrated I love her!!! My social justice warrior angry queen - I am just like you bestie and you were ahead of your time <3
They said “yapping” in “The Desert” lol
Can’t wait for Ba Sing Se
AANG IS SO NON-BINARY TO ME

Unpopular opinion I have to get it off my chest.
As of late, there is a rise in live action remakes of animation movies/series. And it is always a battle between the animation and live action.
There are people who prefers live action and there are people who prefers animation. Studios are trying to feed every type of audience out there.
ATLA makes a live action comeback and of course everyone has to make a comparison with the 2010 version.
I remembered a video someone mentioning that the 24 version looks video gamey, whereas the 10 version looks too realistic. Look, if you wanna make a live action, you DO a live-action. Video gamey feels on a live action may feel like a half-assed cgi.
The casting in 2010 was significantly different from the animation. Katara, Sokka and the whole fire nation was wrong, I am not blind.
I actually appreciated 2010 ATLA. I even rewatched it because it was a comfort movie to me.
But when some people push their opinions in your face, you just don't feel like watching something anymore.
Can we just go back to when we watch movies because its fun, and because we like it or want to watch it? We don't have to follow society's idea of a "perfect" or accurate movie.

For the ask game 23 and 25 :)
23. Do you listen to music or watch shows while you work? If so, what’s your favourite?
25. Based on your recent reference searches, what would the FBI assume about you?
23. I like listening to music sometimes when I need to get in a certain atmosphere but I am far more focused when having a show in the background! I like watching comfort shows like atla or Shera, but right now I am rewatching Hannibal while drawing :)
24. Probably that I look at naked people way too much. The amount of half-naked men I have saved these days for James is the cause. Also that I'm into goth fashion a bit too much!!

the fact that zuko blusters and threatens to give zhao a scar “to match” his own when zhao is being a jerk about it and then not only does zuko not kill zhao, he doesn’t actually burn him at all despite his threats… significant

Azula’s happiest moments
I’ve been rewatching the entire atla series with the intent of focusing on Azula the most. Every time I think I know all there is to know about Azula, I learn new things because she’s such a complex and interesting character. In this rewatch I noticed some scenes where I think Azula was truly happy.
Tumblr media
In Return to Omashu, Azula recruits Mai and Ty Lee for her mission. Even though she needed them because they are very skilled, Mai with her knives and Ty Lee with her chi-blocking, I still think that Azula was genuinely happy to see them. She was very happy when Ty Lee hugged her and she told Mai that it was great to see her. They were absolutely her friends, and she did like spending time with them.

Was Mai afraid of Azula?
I’ve been thinking recently about Azula and Mai’s relationship and I wanted to do a post about their relationship in the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first time we see Azula and Mai interact is in Return to Omashu. Mai smiles a bit at Azula. She does look happy to see her. Azula then kind of hugs her but not fully. She may have done it that way because she’s aware that Mai isn’t too fond of hugs. I’m sure that Mai appreciated it. Mai did not seem at all afraid of Azula in this interaction. Then when Azula said that she needed her and Ty Lee for the mission, Mai gladly joined without hesitation. She joined Azula willingly.

I always found this scene in Nightmares and Daydreams to be so cute. I found it to be one of their most normal sibling moments. Zuko went to complain to her about not being invited to the war meeting and Azula reassured him that he was actually wanted there. This is another scene where I found Azula to be sincere with Zuko. I also found it funny when Azula got a little annoyed with Zuko at the end and just told him to go to the meeting. It reminded me of some of my interactions with my own siblings. However, I do wonder why Zuko didn’t know about the war meeting in the first place. As the prince, Zuko should have gotten a formal invitation like Azula did.

My #1 post of 2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first time I watched this scene I believed that Azula had some ulterior motive for warning Zuko not to visit their Uncle Iroh, but after rewatching it so many times, I’ve concluded that there was no ulterior motive. Azula was genuinely warning him. Her explanation made perfect sense. People would think Zuko was plotting with his uncle, since Iroh was seen as a traitor by the Fire Nation, which could in turn threaten Zuko’s new position as the heir to the throne. If Azula had been jealous of Zuko being the heir, she wouldn’t have warned him and would have probably hoped that he got caught visiting their uncle. As complicated as their relationship is, I do believe that Azula genuinely cared for Zuko. I also do believe that Azula calling Zuko “Dum-dum” was affectionate there. In my opinion, Azula was actually happy to have Zuko back home.

this is definitely true for a lot of people but i do think a lot about how much of a beautiful and joyful memory watching atla was as a child (with all my god cousins using the wongs dvd player locked in a 24/7 atla lockdown for two weeks) and then how meaningful it was to me a second time when i was at an incredibly low point in college and rewatched the whole show

1st day of being 24! 🥳
It was a normal day. I rewatched the last few episodes of ATLA Book 3 and I really enjoyed them. Haaaay. Someday, I’ll watch all the seasons in a big screen with loud speakers—alone. Alone muna kasi baka ma-stress ang isasama ko sa kare-replay ko ng ibang scenes. HAHAHA.
Anyway, 24. As I’ve mentioned before, I have been feeling 24 for a while now, so it’s nothing new. What’s new is the train of greetings coming my way. 😊 I thanked all those people who took their time to send me a happy birthday message. I kept it secret because I don’t wanna deal with so much today, I just wanted to deal with those who remembered. 🤣 But I won’t take it against those people who forgot about it. It’s okay, that happens. 😉
So, yeah… that’s it for today. Happy birthday to me! Yey! 🥳🥳🥳

Rewatching the S20 episode where Liv is talking to Noah through FaceTime, makes me wonder when we'll see Carisi talk to the girls that way too
I feel like there was so much the show could have done with that with Carisi - especially in the second half of season 24 considering they fired his wife but atlas, ADAs don't get to have personal lives on this show and Carisi definitely doesn't get to have one
