Hi, I’m a new larrie and I believe them to be dating now and back then too, but the only things that are throwing me off are when they (mostly Harry lol) “confirm” stuff like that.

Like when Harry got asked who his first crush was and he answered Louis and when someone asked if they are dating and he says yes. Now, why that’s throwing me off is because they were/are supposed to keep it a secret, so help me out. Do you think he did that as rebellion or do you think he wanted to tell the truth, so he did, but was hoping it came across as a joke?

I personally lean towards the latter, but I’d like to hear someone else’s opinion to help me form my thoughts better. x

Hi, love. Those two moments happened so early on. When H was asked who his first crush was, he very much looked like he thought for a moment, then smiled when he said it, and was very serious when she asked how Louis felt about him. I don’t think he meant it as a joke and I don’t think he was rebelling. That moment and the Mario Kart moment were both interviewed SugarScape and both are still all over the internet, so there seems to have been some moments where the insinuation (or confirmation) of the two of them being together between 2011 and 2012 were allowed/tolerated/encouraged.

The video when he confirms that they’re dating was interesting because he looks almost exhausted and somewhat hesitant to answer the question, but still does. And when the girl says, “I told you/I thought so!” he just outright beams, as if he was expecting her to freak out or be upset, but then is so happy when she’s supportive.

There was definitely something odd going on around the time because it’s around the same time of that Much Music interview where the woman asks about Larry (starts at 16:00) and tells them about how girls like reading fic about two guys they fancy being together and you can tell how hard it is for Harry and Louis to wrap their heads around the idea. To me, it very much seems like they’d been explicitly told that, as Louis says, if someone is a Harry fan, for example, they’re not going to like the idea of Louis and Harry together. And then the journalist is like, oh that’s not true at all! You can see their little heads explode.

My basic feeling is that it’s possible the label has an inkling that Louis was gay from day one and was okay with it. But they hadn’t expected Harry to not be straight, as well. And they hadn’t expected the two to fall for each other. But there seemed to be some leniency in the early days. The closet came down hard when there was a serious push to break into the US charts—H*ylor started, Louis was “loved up” with Eleanor, and Harry and Louis barely interacted. As fans dug their heels in, the closet got worse and the narrative shifted to the homophobic “fans ruined their friendship” nonsense. That then evolved into Harry vs OT3 (ie: Harry is too good for the band) and so on.

hi, sorry, do you know what sugarscape is? i haven't been in the fandom that long and im so confused 😭

well it's really just a channel on youtube that does celeb videos that are usually quite... let's say low in quality krdjfkjht

BUT they gave us priceless gems like interviews with the boys like the fetus days with "when you say boobs do you mean the full breast or as a pair?"

and then of course the mario kart interview that is indescribable and part of the larry hall of fame

This Mario kart interview haunts me to this day. It is less than seven and a half minutes long and i feel like i could talk about it for at least an hour and a half. There’s just so much going on:

Harry forgetting his alibi for Valentine’s Day because he was trying to make Louis seem like a bad boyfriend for leaving him alone to be with Eleanor

the interviewer being the darkest of larries

Louis practically outing Liam

Harry and Louis completely forgetting how mario kart is played so they can tell everyone about their bedroom habits

Zayn wanting to yeet himself from the building

everyone making fun of Liam for bussing quick

Etc, etc, etc again i could go on for hours

From Harry I honestly don't get that he wants to be 'officially out', but the MP thing makes me think he does not want to lose time playing pretend forever. And the reactions to Holivia were so vile (towards Olivia), that must be hurtful to a people pleaser like Harry, too. Anyway, for his mental health I hope he'll do what's best for himself, also to show others that a life in the closet can be a good life.

I always want to be super careful about how I talk about this - because there are many different components and I think talking about what Harry wants flattens them.

If we go back to the two parts of the closet that I just talked about - when it comes to what people want. The first is how Harry feels about the assumption that he is straight. There's a lot that goes into that - how Harry wants his sexuality to be understood, how much he wants to be perceived or not perceived, how he feels about his image as a public figure and how he wants to be seen and influenced in the world.

Then there's the question of the penalty for coming out. As he's selling out stadiums to a fantasy boyfriend audience, it's really obvious what at least part of that penalty is and why he doesn't want to pay it. And along those lines - I don't think he has much choice about playing pretend if he's going to remain in the closet. I suspect Harry's different desires conflict with each other. And while we can't know exactly how that works out - I do worry for him.

The idea that he can show others that a life in the closet can be a good life doesn't resonate with me at all. I'm not quite sure what you think needs to be shown. But for anyone who is interested there's a lot of evidence that celebrities can live a reasonable open private life, experience a lot of success, and be understood as straight by the public. I don't think the fact that that reality exists for celebrities really makes much difference to most people who describe themselves as in the closet.

Ok I remember an old magazine interview where Louis said he saw that Harry brought a girl to their flat so he slept in the airport that the band was supposed to be at that next morning. It might prove the “open relationship” part or there were feelings but it was never “official” to them.

I just remember reading it and thinking “wtf?” bc I don’t think besties react like that to those certain things.

I have such a specific memory of this interview. And for YEARS it was the main reason why I thought Larry might not have been the exact dynamic most Larries think it was, even in the early days. Like you said, it was an oddly specific story. And I think if your best mate brought home a girl, you’d just ignore it and put on some headphones. Not sleep in the airport.

Not too long ago, I went on a deep dive for that interview and I literally could not find it. So I thought I dreamt the whole thing.

No, wait. Hold on.

As previously discussed, today's quote from YAH was "People destined to meet will do so, apparently by chance, at precisely the right moment”, from Ralph Waldo Emerson, teasing the Late Night Talking music video. And exactly (or almost exactly) 12 years ago today, was the day of Harry and Louis' auditions for the judges on the x-factor. That's very likely the day they met.

Now, that got me thinking a little bitt. Both H and L seem to write a lot about the time they met each other, and how it felt. I guess it comes with the package, you know, making it everyone's business when you meet your soulmate at the age 16 and all that. And I've never really paid too much attention to the lyrics of LNT but it totally feels like that initial phase of the relationship… they had so much to talk about, to know about each other, they didn't live together yet, their lives were about to turn upside down.

And then I remembered that famous quote from Jay's interview for Sugarscape, 2012. When she was asked about Harry and Louis' "bromance", that's what she said:

❝ At Christmas they had three days off from each other as a band, but Louis was on the phone to H seeing what he was doing. Before then he was even saying, ‘Should we all go away at Christmas with H and Anne, as I might miss him?’ ❞

And I'm probably high-fiving god with this interpretation, but hm, Louis was clearly having a hard time with everything during the xfactor. He originally auditioned with Mr. Brightside during the first audition with the producers and then had to change to Hey There Delilah. He was clearly not very confident with his voice, rarely singing many solos. Louis was temporarily sent home during week 5 (although it was later said that he just ran away to Donny). At the judges house, he cut his foot and almost missed the performance. So oof... yeah.

Harry got the 17Black tattoo around 14 August 2012. The Tattoo Artist, Kevin Paul, has spoken about it three times. The video below (Credit to this TikTok) is the most detailed, that it was after he lost a lot of money gambling in Australia. Which did happen, they were in Australia April 2012 (2 months after turning 18 - Australia's legal gambling age). It was the same trip as the NZ girl kiss.... so a time. Niall said:

Like most of the stupid things we do, it seemed like it was a good idea at the time. We thought it was funny. We just thought, 'We're 18, this is the first time we've been able to spend a bit of money in weeks because we've been on the road. In all honesty, I didn't have a clue what was happening. I won £100, which seemed reasonable, then I stopped. I'll have to say, 'No comment' about the others. Let's just say it got a bit ugly and a lot of money was lost. A lot.  When management found out, we got a serious dressing-down.

If the number 17 is connected to 7 as Harry's number... Maybe, GQ theorised it was related to the James Bond betting method in Diamonds are Forever. I have watched that scene today and don't understand gambling well enough to know. To them Kevin Paul said:

I was tattooing Ed Sheeran and he said that his mate Harry wanted to get one. At that point, I thought it was just a normal friend, so he gave him my number in order to sort it out. I went around to one of Harry’s houses on a Sunday morning and, actually, he had completely different ideas to what we’d originally discussed.” So why 17 Black? “Basically, Harry lost money gambling – I think it was in Australia – and he lost it on 17 black. This was in the early days, the first few years of One Direction.

There is another quote from Kevin Paul, from when it was first seen, (the gambling quote is much later) here, via Sugarscape in 2012:

“They’re really personal to him – the reasons he had them done and stuff, so he doesn’t really want to announce what they are. I’m doing him a half sleeve which he doesn’t mind people knowing about. We’re doing that now, so over the next week or two I’m gonna draw that up, send him the pictures over and then I’ll go back down and start it up. One was something from his childhood, and another one was something really important in his life. There’s nothing on his collarbone, it’s at the top of the arm to begin the sleeve. I tattooed Ed Sheeran as well – who did a little locket on Harry’s hand, like a little padlock thing. They didn’t really have to stop because of the pain, it was all pretty small things really so didn’t take too long.”

Hello! I was wondering when you believe Harry and Louis first kissed … because people are always like “even on the first few days of x factor they were already into each other” - which I do obviously see but I can’t imagine they got together THAT quickly especially being that it was prob forbidden lol …

I agree that I think it was veeerry early on. They were kids whose moves weren’t publicly scrutinised and Simon didn’t have hawk eyes on them all the time when they were in the house… there were other contestants and bigger fish to fry than a 16 and 18 yr old sneaking off (plus they were sharing a room). It just… wouldve been easier to get away with than when they started getting bigger.

If we take Harry’s 22 Feb 2011 interview with Sugarscape about his first real crush (the cutest interview of all time), and 1d were in the X Factor house from roughly August - Dec 2010, and they’d already discussed it… I’d say it would’ve had to have happened early on in the season. They already seemed super comfortable together from the get go, 100%, but I reckon it was just adorable dorky pining for a while until they kissed one night.

Mind you, I’m sure Louis had considered the age gap quite thoroughly, too. Harry was a bright eyed bushy tailed 16 year old, following Louis around like a puppy, and when you’re 18… 16 can feel like quite a gap. It kinda is. He was able to do things that Harry couldn’t, and he had to consider his influence on this kid’s life and whether pursuing the relationship was a good idea or not.

So I think it took a bit longer than immediately, but the crush and the pining was there from veeeery early on, and their first kiss came pretty shortly after that.
