Ethan
She sits on her bed, eyes fixed in the patch of Boston sky visible from the tiny hospital window. She has hardly said a word to him since she came out of the coma.
Diana Ramirez, the woman who spoke a mile a minute.
The woman who expressed the best through her words, stays silent.
And Ethan watches, helpless, the distance between them evident like a chasm.
But he let's her stay that way.
Grief works in surprising ways.
"Ethan would you sign Diana's discharge papers?"
The question breaks him from his introspection as he turns to sign the papers that Baz hands him. Papers signed, Baz leaves the room sparing a sympathetic glance towards him.
They are alone once again.

Diana
She was lost in her thoughts once again.
It happens quite frequently now, stray thoughts wandering to the room where it happened, it's walls closing around her. Bobby's lifeless body, Danny's hacking coughs, Rafael slowly slipping away, Ethan holding her, his hazmat suit constricting, and the dull ache when she wakes up. It all blurs together. And it's like she's trapped under water, drowning, suffocating, dying.
A gentle pressure on her shoulder brings her back.
And he's there, for some unknown reason he always knows when to break her free from the shackles of her own head.
"I have your discharge papers Rookie"
"Huh?"
"You are free to go home, take a leave for a few-"
"I don't want to be alone", she says, voice devoid of emotions.
"You won't be, I asked Dr. Varma to pack you a bag, you can stay with me-"
The words bring her out of the trance like state that she couldn't seem to shake off.
"Er...if you want that ofcourse, all your roommates are working, but Naveen forced me to take a leave for a few days, so I thought-"
"Thank you Ethan", she breaks his nervous ramblings with three simple words, "I'll go with you".

Ethan
The car journey to his apartment passes in silence, Diana keeps her gaze fixed at the scenery whizzing past them, one hand pressed on the glass window and the other tangled in his. Ethan keeps his eyes trained on the road, occasionally glancing at her.
And for the first time in months the silence feels oppressive.
His apartment looks just like he left it, yet somehow everything seems different this time with her at his side.
"I never asked....how long did the coma last?" Diana's voice is raspy as she utters her words.
"Thirty two hours, we almost thought-" his voice catches in his throat.

Diana
Ethan's grey sweater feels oddly comforting, despite it's size. It smells like him, his woodsy scent mixed with traces of his expensive perfume. She can hear him from the kitchen, cooking for them and she dares to imagine them as a family, with him cooking and her setting up the table and a little kid with blue eyes, trotting behind her father in the kitchen. She thinks of the old songs her mother used to sing, she thinks of the boardgames with her brother and father and she thinks about her and Ethan and a little family where they both belong. And then she thinks of another girl who lost her father, the woman who lost her husband, who now sits on the shattered remains of the dreams Diana conjured up........and then, Diana Ramirez falls.
She falls with the shuddering breaths of pain and fear.
She falls with the shin of toxic oil that clings to her body.
She falls with the cry of a broken warrior who has no fight left in her.
She falls in the memory of the lives lost and the lives that continue to shatter in the aftermath of the attack.
And she cries for the first time since she left the isolation room.

Ethan
"You don't have to go to the memorial Rookie."
"I have to Ethan, why aren't you understanding that?"
"For God's sake Diana, you just had a panic attack, why will you subject yourself to something that might trigger you again?"
"I have to, I just have to Ethan, please, just this once listen to me and don't force your opinions on me."
"I-", forcing himself to take a breath he says, "Very well, I'll drive you to the memorial. But two hours and then we leave."
"That would be enough."

Diana
It starts raining just as she starts speaking, the grey skies and the even greyer backdrop of the cemetery, matching the pain that had descended on the people who looked at her, eyes expectant. The voice that speaks about enjoying a picnic at the Boston Common doesn't belong to her, it's the voice of someone who is hanging by the very shred of life, she feels the beginning of another panic attack rearing it's ugly head and her eyes find his, the man who has his hand on her best friend's shoulder, lending silent support, the one who has tied himself around her entire being despite all his reluctance.....and for the first time, she breathes, the smell of petrichor filling all her senses.
Diana finds her way back to Sienna and Ethan after the caskets are lowered to the ground. Her best friend flings herself at her as they both, breakdown in the embrace of the other, she feels lighter, the pain less excruciating than what she felt for so long and in the death of the numbness that consumed her, she feels his presence at her side......and suddenly everything seems better.
