On Friday, the Georgia EPD granted permits to Twin Pines to strip-mine three miles from Okefenokee Swamp. This will be a "demonstration mine" of 600 acres digging out titanium dioxide, staurolite, and zircon. I cannot state how disappointed I am in my own state's environmental department to approve something so damaging to our natural wetland. The Okefenokee is the largest blackwater swamp in North America and one of the most endangered rivers in America. Hopefully, John Ossoff will block it again as he did back in 2022.
If you are looking for ways to help go ahead and check out 100miles.org and Georgia River Network.

"Cobalt Red": Smartphones & Electric Cars Rely on Toxic Mineral Mined in Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo produces nearly three-quarters of the world's cobalt, an essential component in rechargeable batteries powering laptops, smartphones and electric vehicles.
But those who dig up the valuable mineral often work in horrific and dangerous conditions, says Siddharth Kara, an international expert on modern-day slavery and author of _Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives_.
In an in-depth interview, he says the major technology companies that rely on this cobalt from DRC to make their products are turning a blind eye to the human toll and falsely claiming their supply chains are free from abuse, including widespread child labor.
"The public health catastrophe on top of the human rights violence on top of the environmental destruction is unlike anything we've ever seen in the modern context," says Kara. "The fact that it is linked to companies worth trillions and that our lives depend on this enormous violence has to be dealt with."

Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
Two former state and federal mining regulators say state and federal authorities should investigate the role strip mining played in last week’s devastating and deadly flooding in eastern Kentucky and the condition of the mines after the torrential rainfall.
The Kentucky counties, and areas of West Virginia and Virginia, flooded by torrential rains have for decades been heavily logged and strip-mined for coal—land-use practices that dramatically alter the landscape and contribute to flooding. The recent flooding has killed at least 37 people.
“If you get an area that has been strip mined, and the soil has been stripped off, and the upper layers of the soil and rock have been dumped into a valley fill, you have a surface that is not fully vegetated and you get no water retention whatsoever, and that is what causes these flash floods,” said Jack Spadaro, a former top federal mine-safety engineer who works as a consultant for coalfield residents, workers and their lawyers.
Randsell said that at a minimum, Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet officials and officials with the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement need to check on the condition of the mines, which could pose ongoing safety risks to people who live downstream from them from washouts, landslides or further flooding from damaged water retention ponds.
Beyond that, she said, a broader study could help regulators determine whether current mining practices and regulations are up to the challenge of climate change, which scientists say is causing heavier, more intensive rain storms.
In fact, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in a 2017 study of the Ohio River basin,  predicted that climate change would bring more rain and significantly increased stream flows to a region that includes the coalfields of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia.
That year,  its lead author, Kathleen D. White, told The Courier Journal that it was already out of date and that climate change was accelerating faster than expected.
And in 2019, an analysis of the Corps’ streamflow data and satellite images of strip-mined land for Inside Climate News found that the Big Sandy watershed straddling Kentucky and West Virginia had the largest swath of some 1,400 square miles in their study area altered by strip mining – and was the most threatened by more rain from climate change.

Get Hosed!
An AI-penned script meant to be shot without any paid actors on camera. It's supposed to be a sensationalized documentary about water rights usage and water parks, but ends up as an indictment of capitalism with water parks as a microcosm, cobbled together from ads and news reports, talking about strip mining Splash Mountain, and selling off water rights/dumping rights in the Lazy River.

I am fundraising for Mosa to receive medical treatment and refugee assistance through the Rafah crossing on GoFundMe. He is a 25 year old law student at Gaza University. He is currently suffering from an untreated respiratory infection, starvation, and a shrapnel injury to his leg preventing his mobility. We urgently need him to get preventive care before his condition deteriorates. I worry with the overcrowding he will become vulnerable to contracting diseases as time passes. He will use the funds to put his name on the border crossing list, obtain a passport, asylum to a neighboring country, rent for housing if possible, food, and necessities. Please make a generous donation and share the campaign so he can receive the treatment he needs.

The Politics Behind Some Mining Considerations
Opinion
It is interesting to look at some reasons behind the decision to develop a mine. Generally, it stands to reason that a resource deposit’s economic prospect is evaluated using established geological, petrological and geochemical - analytical methods. Decisions to develop the resource are then made based on a thorough evaluation of its economic potential based on the analytical results. However, not always the decisions to mine are based purely on economical rational: Occasionally political reasons may be a determining factor in the development of an otherwise non-profitable resource. I will use coal here as one of a couple of natural ‘resources’ as example to show the push towards developing an uneconomic deposit. The coal considered is situated in the Galilea Basin of Queensland, Australia. Unlike the researched and established qualities of the Bowen Basin coals that have been mined in the past and mined at present, the GB (Galilea Basin) coals have not been mined, because they are uneconomical. This has been shown by research- based assessment carried out by companies over the past 20-30 years. Analyses of the G.B. coal clearly demonstrates the uneconomical prospect of these coals, using modern mining and processing technologies: The coals appear in thin bands rarely over 50cm in thickness, interbedded with silt, clay and sandstone. This translates into excessive washingof the coal, potentially having to use vast amounts of water (precious commodity) to obtain any (minute) quantities of commercially viable coal. The GB coals are within the oil window [1] and some macerals generated oil which is retained within the coal micropores and coal cleats in the form of bitumen which is the source of methane in deeper parts of the basin [2]. The bitumen is also a cause of spontaneous combustion in many coals [3].

Hello, everyone. I hope you're doing well
I know I'm just one Tumblr blog with less than 300 followers, the vast majority of which aren't active. But I really hope this post reaches many people, so there'll be one last tragedy in Palestine. I'll repost this many times if I have to
Mohamed Abdul Hamid is a Palestinian currently living with his family in the Gaza Strip. He created a fundraiser on March 11th, 2024, intending to raise $40k to flee (NOTE: The goal is listed as €25k, but the description states that $40k is needed for a family of 8 to flee to Egypt)
As of writing this, €5,836 has been raised. While any amount helps, it's frustrating to see fundraisers like this one earn much less money than the one for AO3, which had a bigger goal that was reached and even surpassed in a much shorter time
Even if you can only donate the equivalent of €5 and think it's a meaningless amount, it isn't for people in need. This is the thank you note I got for donating €5 (the equivalent of 7.34 CAD) to Mohamed's fundraiser:
Tumblr media
I put this note here to remind you all that any amount of money helps. *Any* amount
And if you aren't in a position to donate for any reason, remember that sharing really does help and can go a long way. So please, reblog this post if you won't be donating. Alternatively, share it on Twitter if you have an account, since posts there tend to get more attention
ALSO, if you are or know a person from a country in the European Union who can act as a beneficiary, reach out to Mohamed through Instagram (listed in his April 26th update)

there’s just something so utterly gratifying in sasuke killing orochimaru and making it known the reason he doesn’t apply his “no kill” rule for him is because sasuke views him with a disgust and dislike that he almost only reserves for itachi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
itachi and orochimaru while differ in they want from sasuke, both are perpetrators of some sort in sasuke’s life. trying to manipulate him through lies and coercion, and of course on top of it they have committed crimes beyond redemption. so it’s greatly satisfactory that sasuke, as a victim, gets to kill them both with the same level of merciless.
of course, this all gets kinda dimmed when both return, and act all goody goody. though it is nice both of them aren’t anymore in a position where they have power over sasuke, in fact it’s sasuke who has it now. itachi is so ashamed he can’t even meet sasuke for himself until sasuke presses and he’s forced to finally tell him the truth. and orochimaru is basically in debt acting as sasuke’s follower

short analysis of the tragedy of fang runin because she’s scratching at the walls of my brain like usual.
fang runin is probably the most tragic character i’ve ever read about. she left tikany to escape drugs, poverty and abuse, and then had to suffer tremendously by those factors again and again. she fought whole-heartedly to build a world free from corruption and oppression, even if her methods were… less than ethical on some occasions. hell, she refused to even sit on the throne because she deemed that there’s where her corrupt predecessors sat. that’s how badly she wanted to separate herself from the evil of nikara.
rin so desperately wanted to give her people the childhood and life she and the people she loved never got. and then only for her at the very end to realise that war and oppression won’t end and that her country could never be free. her country is broken beyond repair, and the only way for nikara to survive is for colonialism to put it the broken scraps together, the one thing rin fought all her life to defeat.
