From the lack of care for community health, to the constant thread of eugenics, and disproportionate effect on people of color and queer people the similarities between the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the ongoing covid pandemic are eerie.

do you have advice on how to find a mask for someone who legit, for real has difficulty breathing through one? i get badly congested because of the build up of humidity/moisture (plus a deviated septum), so then i have to remove the mask to blow my nose every 10 seconds which obvi defeats the purpose. i've tried to do research but i'm having trouble finding answers to this specific query. since you seem knowledgeable i would really appreciate any pointers if you have them. thank you.
hi! first of all thank you so much for wanting to mask despite the difficulties. second, i want to mention that im not a science or medical-type person of any kind, just a high-risk civilian trying to stay alive through the ongoing pandemic.
with the widespread non-industrial use of respirators in dealing with covid, there are manufacturers that have been looking for more comfortable, casual options while still offering adequate filtration. however many of these kinds of masks are either quite expensive, perpetually hard to acquire/sold out, or aren't fully NIOSH-approved (or equivalent standard). so my recommendations will be for only NIOSH-approved headstrap N95s.
since you have a structural condition (deviated septum), finding a breathable mask that fits your face without agitating your sinuses is essential. you'll want to be sure it's large enough that it's not pinching or putting too much pressure on your nose bridge. some users in the Masks4All subreddit have said saline rinses and BreatheRight strips can alleviate congestion issues, along with the right kind of mask. exploring a variety of mask shapes may help you!
Tumblr media
finding a well-fitting respirator is difficult because there is no "one size fits all", but the 3M Aura 9205+ comes close! it's available in many areas and fits a wide range of faces. this is the mask i use. the "tri-fold" shape allows me to talk or laugh without compromising the seal or brushing against my face, compared to a typical "cup" shape N95. they also come individually wrapped, so it's easy to keep one in your car or bag, or distribute to others.
Tumblr media
according to many who are "still coviding", the most breathable masks are the "duckbill" shape like the Gerson 3230+. I personally haven't tried them myself as I'm put off by the shape, but many duckbill wearers say that they easily overcome this "flinch" once they feel how comfortable it is, and that it's their go-to mask for extended wear or strenuous activities like the gym.
Tumblr media
a more standard shape said to be close to the comfort of the duckbill is the 3M 9105 VFlex. It still has a larger silhouette than the Aura, but the duckbill look is less pronounced. "bi-fold" mask shapes like the BNX N95 can also put less pressure on your nose and allow more breathing room while keeping a slimmer profile.
Tumblr media
you can also try something like the Readimask, a strapless mask that adheres to your face with medical adhesive (think like a band-aid). these can be a little more expensive, but you can order a free sample pack for sizing purposes (free plus shipping, mine was only $5 in the US) and see if it works for you.
Tumblr media
if you feel that the humidity/moisture is more of an issue than your septum, you may also want to look into valved masks, but be warned: masks with an exhaust valve only protect the wearer, and not the people around you. reserve these only for situations where you will be one-way masking. particles cannot enter through the valve, but particles you exhale exit into the ambient air. however, if you are in a situation where you find you are the only person masking and everyone else is breathing unfiltered air anyway, a mask with an exhaust valve is fine. reusable elastomeric respirators often have exhaust valves, but there are disposable versions too, like the 3M Aura 9211+ above.
"mask nerd" Aaron Collins has a full demonstration and overview of many of these masks in his most recent video. He also discusses earloop masks if you prefer those:
youtube
you can also view AccuMed's Mask Testing Data and sort by lowest to highest breathability (lower numbers indicate the pressure drop = better breathing). This doesn't have every mask on the market (for instance, it's missing the VFlex), but it does have many common brands/models. Aaron Collins also made his own spreadsheet of over 200 masks he fit-tested himself.
i hope this gives you a launchpad to find something that works for you!

if you support Palestinians by boycotting, protesting, raising awareness, etc (as you should) but aren’t doing anything to protect yourself and others against COVID, i really want you to ask yourself why that is.
why are you willing to believe Palestinians when they talk about their deaths, but not disabled folks? why are you willing to believe the USA government would spread disinformation to protect their own interests about I/P, but not about COVID? why are you willing to be inconvenienced by boycotts and protests, but refuse to wear a mask? why are you willing to go out of your way to try and protect people halfway across the world, but not people in your own community?
a lot of you romanticize your role in your idea of “the revolution.” you dream of fighting back against violence and tearing down the corrupt, but you never consider practicing basic community care or deconstructing the hyper-individualistic ideals of white supremacy.
COVID was and is a litmus test for peoples reliability in “the revolution.” most of you failed. until you start listening to disabled folks and practicing community care, you will always be a tool of the very oppression you believe you’re fighting against.

When wearing a mask that covers the lower half of your face, what color is most flattering on you personally? This is not necessarily your favorite color, its the one you think looks best on you, the color that brings out your eyes and makes you look alive instead of dead and washed out.
Please feel free to tell me what I missed in the tags.
Reblog or tag your friends that still wear masks if you want to see more representative results.

I haven't posted about the latest pandemic zines so here u go.
november was half blacked out because i had a lot to say but didn't want anyone to read it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
December was the last issue of the first year of doing the zine:
What else is there to say? I keep asking myself. Who even is the audience for this zine? Should I be more convincing re: protections, or is everyone on the same page?
and January I was sick of words, so the whole thing ended up as a collage.

When I was waking up from my surgery I noticed there were people in the room with me who weren’t wearing masks. I asked the nurse closest to me “can all the people without masks on get out? I’m scared.” and her response was “we don’t have a mask policy anymore.”
I don’t remember a lot of what happened after that but I remember telling her to leave if she wouldn’t wear a mask. The nurse who spent several hours observing me kept hers on, but the recovery bay I was in was just sheets hanging from the wall and all of the staff not actively in my room, including those camped out right at the entrance 3 feet away, refused to put on masks.
I had pelvic surgery. It’s flu and Covid season and they refused to wear masks. While near people recovering from surgery. Pelvic surgery. Which a cough could cause to fail.
I’m going to stay mad about this for forever.

I’m not scared of covid because I have OCD. I’m scared of covid because the scientific data shows that it’s prevalent and dangerous. I have hygiene-focused OCD because society, including the medical establishment, has shown that they are not willing to protect or care for me. I already have long covid, I could die or lose a lot of quality of life if I get it again.

Accepting that we are all going to repeatedly contract a virus that causes cumulative vascular damage, is accepting that the most vulnerable among us will die. Layered covid mitigations, starting with wearing a high quality respirator, says no to preventable infections and "acceptable" death.
Image Description: Dark grey and red text over a grey scale background. The background is an image of an N95 respirator. The dark grey text reads, "Say NO to preventable infections". Red text offset behind the grey text reads, "Acceptable death".

Masking is the new queer flagging.
Pass it on.
My mask protects you. Your mask protects me. It says, “We’re already missing half a damn generation of us.” It is what harm reduction looks like.
Your mask tells me that we already share values. It says, “I want you to be safe. You belong here.” It shows that you consider the way your actions impact others.
Your mask is a middle finger to the medical industrial complex. It says, “A condom or an N95 can’t keep me from loving you.” It is solidarity with vulnerable bodies.
Your mask tells me you are critical of the system. It says, “I will not serve your agenda at the expense of lives.” It is a rejection of mass disablement and white supremacist eugenics.
Your mask tells me how you show up for others. It says, “I am in community with you.” It is radical care shown to strangers.
My mask protects you. Your mask protects me. It says, “Your norms do not serve us.” Our masks are queer as fuck.

I posted about this "jokingly" on my Twitter but today my first patron *and* my last patron commented on my mask.
The first did this thing I've absolutely come to fucking hate – "oh... I should be masking 😔". Maybe if I had stopped for a second I would have offered the patron a mask, but I get so overwhelmed when people do this. It's like they want absolution for their guilt and I'm not giving that to them.
They see the social consequences (someone even *admitted* to my face) and then essentially "compliment" me, as if I'm not struggling intensely. As if I don't spend the majority of my time alone and in isolation. As if I'm not alienated from nearly everyone I'm surrounded by.
This shit is so humiliating to me – and it doesn't make me feel seen at all. It's utterly depressing.
And then the fucking last patron asked me why I was wearing a mask because COVID is over. This is some shit where I just had to shut down or I would lose my job.
Why am I wearing a mask? Because my dad fucking died and he didn't even have COVID. The medical industry was just SO FUCKED that I had to witness him fucking wither away and die in front of my eyes over 6 months. This is what disabled and immunocompromised people have been trying to tell y'all. If you die because medical help isn't available you *still fucking die in real life*. It doesn't matter if it's from COVID or a car crash or cancer. You still. Fucking. Die. And that's the headspace that last patron put me in. One of just rage.
Why say anything at all? What joy do you get from this? Why can't you mind your goddamn business? So I guess I started the shift depressed and ended it enraged. How great.
