Can't Take That Away by Steven Salvatore
Tumblr media
An empowering and emotional debut about a genderqueer teen who finds the courage to stand up and speak out for equality when they are discriminated against by their high school administration.
Carey Parker dreams of being a diva, and bringing the house down with song. They can hit every note of all the top pop and Broadway hits. But despite their talent, emotional scars from an incident with a homophobic classmate and their grandmother's spiraling dementia make it harder and harder for Carey to find their voice.
Then Carey meets Cris, a singer/guitarist who makes Carey feel seen for the first time in their life. With the rush of a promising new romantic relationship, Carey finds the confidence to audition for the role of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the school musical, setting off a chain reaction of prejudice by Carey's tormentor and others in the school. It's up to Carey, Cris, and their friends to defend their rights--and they refuse to be silenced.
Told in alternating chapters with identifying pronouns, debut author Steven Salvatore's Can't Take That Away conducts a powerful, uplifting anthem, a swoony romance, and an affirmation of self-identity that will ignite the activist in all of us.

Another book I was able to read in one sitting! This is a short, quick read that's an lgbtq retelling of Pretty Woman. While not being believable enough at times, this had me turning the pages and thoroughly enjoying it.
Teddy, a debt ridden plant-lover, meets Cole, a well-off guy who doesn't believe in love. This has fake dating, and opposites attract tropes with a whole lot of extra drama on the side. But, did I mention a little spice? Yes, please!
While not my favorite, I still think this is worth a read!
Out March 26, 2024!
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!

ARC Review of The Boyfriend Subscription by Steven Salvatore
Tumblr media
Rating: 4/5 Heat Level: 4/5 Publication Date: March 26th
Premise:
A queer Pretty Woman-inspired romance; Divorced and about to lose his beloved plant retail business, Teddy Hughes is faced with no choice but to leave New York City... until he meets Cole Vivien. Cole is the CEO of a gay dating app and needs a fake boyfriend to impress a potential investor and bring to his sister's wedding, and offers the position to Teddy.
My review:
I LOVED the the first meeting between Teddy and Cole; the chemistry was there right off the bat interspersed with these moment of comedy, like when they swap tops on the steps of the Met and Teddy finds himself wearing a harness as he enters a five star hotel (but deals with it in the best way, namely, not giving a fuck and cheerfully making other people uncomfortable).
Teddy (Teddy... Ted... inspired by Edward, perchance? Though he's the Vivian of the story as far as him being hired as a fake boyfriend for a week) is an energetic and endearing hero. Life's dealt him a few hard knocks and I appreciated his moments of vulnerability as much as I enjoyed how upbeat he was. Cole is super smooth and charming but is also pretty anxious and image-conscious, a product of his upbringing and his position as the CEO of a company trying to go public. Cole kind of functions as both the Edward and Vivian of this story, as both the CEO and sex worker, and he's the one with the infamous no-kissing rule.
I love the concept of Cole not only being a CEO and creator of a queer dating/hook-up/OnlyFans-esque app VERSTL (I see what Steven did there), but he's also an extremely popular performer on the platform. Cole publicly calls himself an entrepreneur and a sex worker, which I imagine does a lot in terms of destigmatizing the profession and industry (even if he's in a position of relative privilege). That being said, I'm not sure if I buy his family not knowing that he's a sex worker, especially if his company is about to go public and they're pretty prominent in the business world too. But whatever, it's romanceland; I'm in it for the vibes, not the realism.
So, this book clocks in at about 288 pages, and I started to wish that it was longer as I got to the second half of the book which is centered around Cole's sister's wedding. The plot started to feel pretty rushed: there was parental drama, a reporter outing Cole, Teddy's overprotective friends who Cole thinks might be conning him, a shitty employee, etc. There is sexual assault off-page, but we are barely given any time to contend with that before the main characters abruptly have to leave for the wedding. Ultimately, I think the story wraps up neatly, complete with an effective grovel on Cole's part, but it's the middle bits that could have done with more expansion.
The sex:
The sex was a pretty solid mix of sweet and sexy; there's lots of tender cuddling and heavy-petting and blowjobs. There is one sex scene with some fairly rough sex, which is something Teddy demands but later regrets because he was asking for the internet version of Cole— the fantasy instead of the irl version of him.
My one note was that there were some odd breaks/skips in the sex scenes. For example, there's a scene where Teddy is going down on Cole, but we don't actually see Cole orgasming. Instead, there's a skip and it seems like both Cole and Teddy have gotten each other off and now they're lingering in the afterglow. This happened a couple times.
Overall:
I enjoyed The Boyfriend Subscription; it had all the beats of a romcom starting with a stellar meet-cute and great chemistry between Cole and Teddy that carried throughout the book, even when the plot was a little over the place. This book is a part of a new Harlequin imprint called Afterglow Books, which consists of diverse, romcom-type romances, so I'm looking forward to reading more books in this imprint!
Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.

Being best friends with Lexi and she knows how you feel about Stefan so she tries to get you together and open up but you think she still wants Elena but he doesn't. He wants you.

Lexi Branson, my bestfriend was in town visiting Stefan for his birthday. We had been planning this surprise since the dawn of time, or maybe since two years ago when she was trapped in Brazil for god knows what reason.
Stefan and Lexi get along like two peas in a pod, wherever one goes, the other follows. She was likes his older sister except the blood relation part.
But for years, I've had this gut-wrenching feeling that I've been slowly falling in love with Stefan, the Stefan Salvatore out of all men. I've never been so sure of my feelings for him until recently when I realised that every girl in Mystic Falls found him dreamy.
Obviously Lexi knew from the get-go that I adored Stefan, she in fact told me that I had feelings for him. Which made me angry that I couldn't see it earlier.
Recently Stefan and Elena have broken up, they were together for maybe for a year but things have been changed in their relationship. Elena pulled a Katherine and swapped brothers but this time she went for the older one.
Stefan has been on edge for months, I know he wants her back. He just wants Miss Gilbert perfect samaritan, everybody wants her. I despised her, she always had the one thing or person that I couldn't have.
"y/n." a voice says "y/n?" the voice wakes me up from viciously staring at Elena, I didn't hate her exactly I was jealous of her.
"hm?" I say looking around to notice that Lexi and Stefan had come back from their friendship day "you're staring." Lexi whispered through her gritted teeth as she sat next to my with a smile that even the devil couldn't see through.
"look you and stefan have a date tonight i-" "WHAT" i yell and all heads turn my way, Lexi grabs my arm dragging my up the stairs to her room.
She slaps my softly "i'm setting you two up, it's perfect." Lexi smiles innocently, my heart was racing at an alarming rate. It was a big deal, I hadn't had the balls to tell him my feelings for one, secondly IM GOING ON A DATE WITH HIM?
"You can't just do that Lex, what am I going to wear... where are we going?" I blurt out all my questions, overloading Lexi who holds me still "wait he went on a date with me?" I ask her "he completely agreed, look its a nice restaurant just outside of town so wear a dress." she says patting me down.
"A dress?" I say and she nods "maybe hes on the rebound so nothing too pretty, right?" I ask her and she shakes her head profusely. "I say go all in." Lexi says and I nod "go all in" I nod reassuring myself that he didn't just say yes because he needed a rebound.
right before the date
I sat in my room, in the rose gold dress that I had once before said I'd never wear. Lexi squealed excitedly, she had been trying to set Stefan and I up for years and never has she had this much success.
"you're finally getting to show yourself off, as you should." she smiles to me and I sigh "I don't know Lex." I mumble getting up and walking over to the mirror "do I look fat?" I ask her and she stands behind me giving me a sour face.
Then a knock at the door prevents Lexi from saying a word, she rushes over and I see Stefan in a suit "Is y/n... uh- is y/n here?" he sounded a bit nervous, Lexi looked back at me with an excited smile.
I grab my purse and walk towards the door and Stefan's face was shocked, he had never seen me in a dress, he had never seen me dress up at all.
"hey stef" I say as Lexi runs back into my room "you look... amazing" his cheeks matched my dress because he was red... sort of. He had a smile on his face and it was the cutest smile I have ever seen.
We both hug each other, eventually making our way down the stairs and out of the house where he reveals his old car that he had left in the garage for years because it was of no use.
"You and I use to ride this baby back in the 80's" he says looking over to me and I quickly walk over to the car to find that it was brand new, almost like it had never been used before "but how? it was like broken." I say astonished at the car in front of me.
"It was but when lexi asked me if I'd want to take you out on a date months ago, I knew that you wouldn't go on a date with a stupid modern car." he says walking over to open the passenger door for me.
Months Ago? Lexi wasn't here months ago? I mean she was for that short period of time but she wasn't here for long "Lexi told me that she had just asked you today whilst you guys were out?" I say and he shakes his head "I had to keep it on the down low, thats what she had called it anyways." he chuckled getting into the car.
He turned the key and the engine sounded like a sweet song playing into my ear "OOOH this baby is so perfect" I kiss the dashboard as if I were in a very platonic friendship with it or something.
"I even had a little something painted on it for you, check your door." he says with a sweet smile and I look at the interior of the door and it had painted Passenger side owned by Y/n Y/l/n which made me laugh.
"When I used to force other people in the back" I laugh as does Stefan "Damon actually tried to sit there once when you were out, I made sure he didnt" he says.
After a while we arrive at a sunflower field where the sun was just beginning to set, theres was a picnic. I'm glad it isnt some fancy whitmore restaurant "I know you hate public places." he mumbles "so I opted for a picnic" he chuckles opening my door for me and leading me out into the field.
"but Elena-" "elena isn't here, its just me and you" he says looking back to me as we make it to the picnic and sit down. "So I had to wear a dress for an occasion that doesn't mean I have a chance to outshine elena." I huff trying to find a comfortable position to sit in.
"Outshine elena?" he asks "Of course, I mean I've liked you for years and from the moment you met Elena you fell in love with her. I mean I'm sure you're only doing all this so you don't feel bad about leaving El" "one more mention of her name and I swear I will go back to her" he says and I immediately stop.
"If I wanted her, I'd be here with her. But I'm not, I'm here with the person I should have asked out in the first place." he says, my jaw drops.
"wow, yeesh, so this isn't about-" "I'm saving you a car ride, I know you're hungry so eat." he says opening the basket and laying out the food, all of it looking so delicious as I lick my hungry starved lips.
I reach for the rolls and Stefan laughs, amazed at how he knew me so well he stares at me for a bit whilst I eat my roll. My mouth becomes empty and I stare back at him "eat" I point to the food and he shakes his head.
Minutes go by without words being spoken.
"I don't want her" he finally gets out "I want you, I crave you, I long for you. I, love you, y/n." he whispers tucking my hair behind my ear before resting his hand on my cheek and leaning forward "so not the rebound?" I ask and he laughs shaking his head before kissing me softly.

Title: And The Lived...
Author: Steven Salvatore
Genre: YA Fiction | Romance | Friendship | Drama | LGBTQ+
Content Warnings: Homophobia | Fatphobia | Eating Disorder | Anxiety
Overall Rating: 10/10
Personal Opinion: After I finished this book, I was so overcome with mushy emotions that I could barely stand it. I am in love with the writing style, the pacing, the characters, everything. Chase Arthur is a non-binary, fat, gay guy who doesn’t know how to love himself. Then they meet Jack Reid and he becomes dependent on Jack’s love to sustain him. But the truth is, he needs to love himself first. Will they be able to? You’ll just have to read it yourself to find out.
Couple Classification: Chase Arthur X Jack Reid = Artist X Artist/Jock
Do I Own This Book? No but it’s on my Christmas wish list.
Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:
Likes:
- I am just overflowing with so many emotions. I have to talk about the ending because that sits with me immediately after I finish a book. In this case, I want to talk about Jack’s big romantic gesture. He dressed up as a prince, stood in front of a crowd of hundreds, and then professed his love for Chase in a poem. The way the poem ends with three “I love you”s had me overcome with so many feelings. Most of them are mushy. And then when he spilled his guts about his past with Callum and how Callum hurt him (emotionally AND physically), I just wanted so badly to hold him. And I’m glad that Chase forgave him but he also wanted to grow and keep loving himself. Likewise, Jack wanted to grow too. God, they want to grow together. Peak romance.
- Therapy. Both Chase and Jack are going to therapy and I witnessed the effects of it in real time and it was incredible. Chase hit rock bottom with his eating disorder after breaking up with Jack and he tied so much of his self-worth in how someone else (Jack) saw him. The fact that he wants to work with loving himself first and foremost after seeking therapy is so important to me. I also love how in addition to therapy, he built on his support system by confiding in his friends. In Sofia and Chloe by telling them about his messy relationship with food. I love how they also opened up in return and made him feel more confident in himself by showing how he portrayed the knight in his animated short. And the way all three of them put on a little fashion show to express their self-love was just beautiful.
- Speaking of friends, Benny and Rae are the best. They’re so hilarious separately and also together. The way Benny instantly went from praising Leila to calling her a hussy as soon as Chase told him she was his ex-best friend is just respectable and so funny. And Rae dropping everything to be with Chase whenever he was hurting or needed her made my heart swell. They wholly supported and loved Chase and I love that for them. Not to mention, Benny is the ultimate chaos gay and Rae is just a whirlwind of hilarity.
- Xavier is such a cool friend too! He saw how Benny was hurting over Rhett and decided to help Benny get back at him so to speak by pretending to be Benny’s boyfriend. It was so quick and so funny, my jaw was on the ground. And then Chase walked in on Xavier mid-thrust inside of Benny and I lost it. Cracked the fuck up. #CollegeRoommateProblems.
- Xavier and Benny later did their gay fairy godfather magic by helping Chase learn about gay sex because like Chase said, sex ed failed us. They showed him everything from lubes to condoms to positions to prostate massagers to how to clean yourself and it was a lot. But beneficial for a lot of baby gays. Truly that suite, minus Aaron, was the gay agenda. #RoommateBenefits.
- Chase and Jack have this electrifying (no pun intended) chemistry. From the moment they met, I could see that Jack wanted Chase. And he wanted Chase to be comfortable with him too. They had such easy conversations and the way they gravitated toward one another was so romantic and had me on the edge of my seat as I waited for them to just kiss already. But I think the thing that really solidifies their chemistry was that they were both inspired by each other. Jack wrote poems for Chase! And he showed them to Chase too! That is such an intimate act and the fact that he gave Chase a poem for his birthday was just so sweet. Then we have Chase creating a whole animated short based off of himself and Jack. The fairy tale story of a prince and knight of warring kingdoms falling in love was just magnetic. I just wanted to see the short play out in real life. And the witch being a misunderstood villain was a genius subversion of a classic trope. But yeah, as I was saying, art that is inspired by each other, there is nothing more romantic than that.
- I’m glad Chase was able to get some closure with both Leila and his dad. I hate the way they treated him but at least he knows his worth isn’t rooted in how they see him. Leila’s inability to understand his non-binary identity and his dad’s fat-shaming attitude are harmful, but at the end of the day, Chase holds the power. I love that but I’m still glad his dad apologized and promised to do better from now on.
- I love Chase’s little sister, Taylor. She openly loves her brother and they play with dolls together and she cried when she saw Chase again on her birthday and I loved it all. I love siblings that love each other. Not to mention, she apparently had a talk with their dad about the way he treats Chase? That is some queen shit and she’s only thirteen!
- I also love the pacing of the book. It actually felt like weeks passed when they did. I can barely believe that Jack and Chase going on their little adventure to the bookstore even happened in the same book. The weeks when they were separated were the longest ones though and I could actually feel the distance between them as if it was physical. Salvatore has a way with words that completely and utterly enraptured me and I don’t think I’ll be forgetting about Chase and Jack’s love story any time soon.
- Something else I appreciate is that Chase never asked Jack to come out. That was never something he had wanted or needed. It would’ve been nice but the thing Chase needed more than anything was for Jack to defend him. As a friend. As a gay guy and a fat guy. Instead, Jack didn’t do that at all. So I just love that Chase was willing to wait for as long as it took for Jack to come out but the real last straw was that Jack wouldn’t protect him. And that’s the tea.
Dislikes:
- Fuck Callum. Toxic masculinity personified. Fuck Leila too, but to a lesser extent. Still, she is the epitome of “gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss.” Fuck Chase’s dad too! Sexist, fatphobic piece of shit. At least you apologized though. It’s a step. A baby step but a step.
- Jack’s dad saying that Jack had overreacted is wild considering a month ago, he said, “As long as Jack doesn’t come back a queer.” Like yeah, Jack overreacted by running away after coming out, sure. He really has no idea how his words affected his son huh.
- Jack royally screwed up his relationship with Chase but oh my god, he really put in the work to fix it. Going to therapy and that public romantic gesture go a long way and they made me so giddy. So while he doesn’t get a pass, I do see why it was tough for him.
