The next time some western media idiot says S. Koreans are a 'conservative' society I'm going to kick them in the balls. We're a society that blows up stupid colonialist metrics like 'conservative' and 'westernized' (fuck off) or 'modern' (double fuck off). Among people aged 20-40, 4% of women vs 13% of men said marriage and offspring were essential in life. 43% of women vs 61% of men said it was important. 53% of women vs 26% of men said marriage and offspring are NOT important.

The higher a respondant's quality of life was, the less likely s/he was to say marriage and children are important in life. Quality of life was measured as having more of the following: education, employment, social status, health, level of happiness. People who had a positive sense about the quality of society (measured by economic stability, trust in society, perception of equality of opportunities and possibility of upward mobility, perception of having choices in life) were more likely to say that these things were important.

Imagine cutting humanitarian aid to any country around the world without batting an eyelash. People at their most vulnerable -who are being massively ethnically cleansed and displaced -who are being permanently disabled because of destructive bombings and with whom will probably have little to no resources to help them manage these disabilities their entire lives, who have been and are at the brink of starvation and death... this is what these western/European countries are doing instead of the bare minimum which is a ceasefire.

Albeit it's not a surprise to me (or most of us) since settler-colonial and imperial countries like the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK have notorious histories of genocides against Indigenous people and have been (and currently are) perpetrators of imperial violence.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency provides basic assistance for people -and to deny that life-saving help to Palestinian people (because we know what this is about) is aligning with IOF terrorism -and it undeniably makes these governments all equally complicit.

My MP's office is closed on weekends but I'll be calling and emailing her, and then emailing genocidal apologist Trudeau. Call and/or email your representatives. This is beyond heinous. I truly don't think these governments could sink any lower -be any more evil, and then they do and it's beyond disgraceful.

The fact that we, Arabic-speaking average people(aka non-journalists), have to keep up with translating Palestinian posts from Arabic to English to avoid having Western Media/Pro-Zionists mistranslate on purpose, says enough about how we all lost trust in the media. From the "there's a list" guy who was standing in front of a calendar and condemning the days of the week, to the BBC's mistranslation of a freed Palestinian hostage's interview. I will try my best to keep translating whatever I can find, and I encourage my fellow bilingual/multilingual Arabs to do the same. It's already sad enough that Palestinian journalists and even children have to use English in videos instead of their native tongue in order to get the world leaders' attention.

Please keep speaking about Palestine.

The U.S. will use its veto power against a Palestinian bid to be recognized as a member state of the United Nations during a vote at the Security Council expected to take place Thursday evening. Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, described as premature an effort by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to gain member status at the U.N. He said there was not unanimity among the Security Council’s 15 members that the Palestinian Authority had met the criteria for membership, with unresolved questions over the governance of the Gaza Strip, where Israel is in a war to defeat and eliminate the controlling power, Hamas. “And for that reason, the United States is voting no on this proposed Security Council resolution,” Patel said.

Earlier it was revealed that the United States was secretly pressuring other members of the Security Council to shoot down a Palestinian state membership so the US wouldn't have to use its veto as that would lead to a wave of local and international criticism for Joe Biden.

80% of the Gaza Strip is destroyed and suffers from continuous military invasions, the movement of the Israeli army, besieging hospitals, commit massacres, destroy and blow up residential neighborhoods. And besieging the population and starving them.

"The Biden Administration last week [early December, 2023] announced it would be seizing patents for drugs and drug manufacturing procedures developed using government money.

A draft of the new law, seen by Reuters, said that the government will consider various factors including whether a medical situation is leading to increased prices of the drug at any given time, or whether only a small section of Americans can afford it.

The new executive order is the first exercise in what is called “march-in-rights” which allows relevant government agencies to redistribute patents if they were generated under government funding. The NIH has long maintained march-in-rights, but previous directors have been unwilling to use them, fearing consequences.

“We’ll make it clear that when drug companies won’t sell taxpayer funded drugs at reasonable prices, we will be prepared to allow other companies to provide those drugs for less,” White House adviser Lael Brainard said on a press call.

But just how much taxpayer money is going toward funding drugs? A research paper from the Insitute for New Economic Thought showed that “NIH funding contributed to research associated with every new drug approved from 2010-2019, totaling $230 billion.”

The authors of the paper continue, writing “NIH funding also produced 22 thousand patents, which provided marketing exclusivity for 27 (8.6%) of the drugs approved [between] 2010-2019.”

How we do drug discovery and production in America has a number of fundamental flaws that have created problems in the health service industry.

It costs billions of dollars and sometimes as many as 5 to 10 years to bring a drug to market in the US, which means that only companies with massive financial muscle can do so with any regularity, and that smaller, more innovative companies can’t compete with these pharma giants.

This also means that if a company can’t recoup that loss, a single failed drug can result in massive disruptions to business. To protect themselves, pharmaceutical companies establish piles of patents on drugs and drug manufacturing procedures. Especially if the drug in question treats a rare or obscure disease, these patents essentially ensure the company has monoselective pricing regimes.

However, if a company can convince the NIH that a particular drug should be considered a public health priority, they can be almost entirely funded by the government, as the research paper showed.

Some market participants, in this case the famous billionaire investor Mark Cuban, have attempted to remedy the issue of drug costs in America by manufacturing generic versions of patented drugs sold for common diseases."

Homelessness/Housing

In California a few years ago, visiting friends in Albany just north of Berkeley, I walked to the Berkeley marina and just around the corners of some side streets I saw many parked motorhomes and recreational vehicles. People, obviously, were living in them.

Now the news is that Los Angeles also has this (to the tune of 40,000 people) and the mayor, Karen Bass, is saying she will do something about it. She mentions tents, and I saw those too in Berkeley, but what strikes me is the motorhomes.

Let's pause here a moment and think. One -- not the only one, but a major one -- of the underlying causes here is the sheer cost of housing. In real money, the cost of housing has almost doubled while, at the same, real income is stagnant. But motorhomes, recreational vehicles, camper vans, travel trailers (I saw all of these too) are much cheaper than zoned housing. For many reasons, not least of which is "not in my back yard," which ends up enforcing class and race segregation.

One might well ask, how come there are people who don't have houses to live, in but do have motorhomes to live in? I didn't do a controlled study but the obvious hypothesis is: simply because motorhomes are cheaper.

So I have a modest suggestion. There should be a national law permitting manufactured housing, including motorhomes and travel trailers, in residential neighborhoods and, perhaps, in specially zoned neighborhoods. Such a law would evoke howls of outrage: "Ugly! Dirty! Unsafe! Not in keeping with the character of the neighborhood!"

"Ugly" is a question of taste, but the law could deal with it by banning features widely felt to be ugly and requiring some widely felt to be attractive. "Dirty" can be dealt with by installing the requisite hookups, or even by having a public utility to come by periodically with a service truck for gas and sewage. "Unsafe" is simply not true. "Not in keeping with the character of the neighborhood" would, of course, usually be true.

There's no political capital right now for such a law, and the rich will always find some way of keeping this stuff out of their view, but something has to give.

Up to now, trailer parks are, indeed, usually kind of trashy. But there are increasingly attractive manufactured homes, tiny homes, container houses, and, yes, motorhomes.

So when overpopulation (yes, that's also a major cause of this) and climate change (up to a billion people will have to move in the next 50-100 years -- where to, pray tell, and where will they then live?) increase the pressure on housing prices even further --

The law should and probably will change to permit manufactured housing, if it meets certain standards, in more places including in many current residential zones.

Currently within 200 miles of my Zip code (13740) one may buy new or used motor homes within a price range of $50,000 to $200,000. Most of these things are small and, unfortunately, hideously ugly. But, they don't have to be ugly.

And, they are homes you can live in!

Manufactured housing can be bought for similar prices, is bigger, and is somewhat better looking. This, too, does not have to be ugly. There is a "designer" variety of manufactured housing. And it doesn't always cost a whole lot more than ordinary ugly old modular homes.

Why does it matter to know this? Because changing the names as part of colonialism is not new in history.

Learning about the history of colonialism and imperialism is important. When we say educate yourself on these matters, it's because you need to learn to recognize patterns and prevent them from reoccurring.

The idea of the West being civilized is all a sham. The idea of Arabs being terrorists is a mere lie similar to the endless lies that have been told about Native Americans and many other indigenous groups.

If you're going to use the word 'terrorist', it's about time you use it on the real enemy.
