y/n had always adored playing for Chelsea, playing for Emma. Chelsea were her childhood team and now she played for them, running down the wing and keeping the game alive.
Better than that, she played with her girlfriend of two years, the two having met and pretty much instantly becoming a power couple in the football world.
While the two hadn't confirmed anything, everyone had pretty much guessed and pieced together and they had never denied anything. Snippets of them ended up over TikTok.
Lauren's hand on her low back as they celebrate, y/n jumping on her when she scored her hat-trick, the two arriving and leaving together, y/n in Lauren's hoodie.
Of course the team knew, they had been a big part in getting the two together so knew the ins and outs of their favourite relationship, making sure that if they posted photos with the two a bit too close in the background that they were okay with it. They always were.
Currently, y/n was sat in Lauren's lap, listening to Emma's pep talk, the manager not even mentioning the way y/n was sat as she knew it wouldn't mean anything to the two.
Today's game was against Tottenham, and y/n had woken up with a sick feeling in her stomach. Like something was going to happen, but she pushed it down and hoped for the best.
The group all cheered as Emma finished, everyone standing up as they leave to get to the tunnel. y/n and Lauren hang back, doing their handshake with either hand before sharing a quick peck.
"Be safe out there." y/n warns Lauren.
"You too baby." Lauren tells her and she nods as they move to the tunnel, Millie sending y/n a knowing smile.
Stamford Bridge was alive with cheers as they walked out, a sea of blue, cheers and screams echoed as the teams lined up, the captain's shaking hands.
y/n shared a smile with Lauren as the Chelsea team huddled, Millie talking them through the first 45 minutes. Their arms were over each other's shoulder, though Lauren let her hand run down y/n's back slightly, equalling an elbow to her side.
The group depart, moving into their places as they wait for the whistle which blows, Bethany England, Lauren and y/n's England teammate starting off the game.
Barely ten minutes in and Lauren's jaw was tensed, her teeth clenched together in annoyance as her lover hit the floor for at least the third time.
Ashleigh Neville happened to be marking y/n today, and the woman was hardly playing fair. Lauren helped y/n up for the third time, the two setting up for the free kick.
Lauren's hand falls to y/n's waist, as if she was checking her girlfriend was okay, which she was. Then Lauren lined up to send the cross in and y/n moved into the box.
Lauren fired the ball in, y/n jumping to try and hit it with her head. As she does, Ashleigh Neville pushes her in the back, y/n goes tumbling down, her head managing to clip the ball into the net as her body sprawls out on the grass.
"Ow." y/n whines, Lauren getting to her and crouching next to her.
"You okay?" The referee asks, checking on the fallen player who nods as Lauren helps her up.
"I'm gonna kill her." Lauren says simply and y/n looks over at her as Millie pats her back.
"Don't you dare." y/n warns her as play gets going again.
y/n runs down the wing quickly, watching Bethany carefully as she times her tackle, sliding onto one knee briefly to pass the ball out to Erin who fires it forward to Lauren.
Seeing the fact Lauren was being surrounded, y/n pushed herself up and sprinted down the field, trying to create a switch up play between her and her girlfriend as she recieved the ball.
y/n went to pass it on when studs found her ankle, the girl shouting in shock as she rolled onto the ground. Lauren stopped her run as the whistle blew, charging over.
"Mills." y/n warned, her captain having been nearest to help her up. Millie realised what she was warning and turned, quickly taking Lauren's shoulders and pushing her away.
Sam replaced Millie, holding out her hands so y/n could take them and put some pressure on her ankle. Once realising she was okay, y/n nodded in thanks to Sam.
"You okay squirt?" Sam asks her.
"It's not me I'm worried about." y/n warns her as she and Sam look over to Millie and Lauren who were protesting at the ref for lack of a card.
"Uh oh." Sam says as Ashleigh rolls her eyes behind the ref and Lauren tenses.
"Yeah, uh oh." y/n agrees, scurrying over and grabbing Lauren's arm, pulling her away. "Calm down." y/n warned Lauren.
"That was such a dangerous tackle." Lauren scoffs.
"Leave it." y/n repeats. "I'm fine, just show Ashleigh what happens when they touch your girl." She adds and Lauren can't help but chuckle.
The free kick was just outside the box, Sam and y/n stepping away as they proudly watched Lauren fire it around the wall and into the goal, the net shaking as Ashleigh groaned.
As y/n turned she saw Lauren smirk smugly at Ashleigh and y/n cleared her throat, finding the action rather attractive to Sam's disgust.
"Keep it in your pants squirt." Sam snorts and y/n mockingly shoves her as they reset.
It took a total of three minutes for Ashleigh to cause trouble again. y/n understood, her team were 2-0 up against the Tottenham side in twenty minutes, but couldn't she leave her alone?
y/n was running down the wing when Ashleigh tugged her back. y/n groaned but turned, kicking the ball off Ashleigh and out for a corner, she looked toward the ref but the woman hadn't seen the tug.
They set up for the corner, Lauren placing herself behind her lover to protect her from the shoving in the box. Lauren's hands were comfortably on y/n's waist, their bodies pressed against each other tightly.
In that moment, Lauren was worrying about protecting y/n from the slightly enthusiastically violent Ashleigh Neville, she couldn't give less of a damn what media coverage it would gain.
The ball was kicked and the box moved, Lauren tried to stay close to y/n but watched as Ashleigh came shoulder to shoulder with y/n, and then the woman's arms came out and pushed, unfortunately wrestling y/n away from the ball. And into the goal post.
y/n's body hit the ground as Lauren let out a shout to stop the game, the referee listening for once and carding Ashleigh with a red, for the arms used to throw y/n against the post.
Lauren however was focussed on the fact y/n was not yet awake, the medics now around her as Lauren stayed next to her, hand in hand as the medics worked around Lauren.
y/n woke up with a groan, only out for a minute, but she had a bruise already forming across her head. y/n squeezed Lauren's hand and looked over at her.
"And I thought running into Millie hurt." y/n groaned and the medics chuckled, asking her if she wanted to be stretchered off. y/n denied, asking if she could be allowed to at least walk off.
"You've got a concussion, though it isn't a major one. Somehow." Their medic said almost confused.
"I'm a tough thing." y/n replies as she wraps her arm around Lauren's shoulder, the girl helping her up and the wrapping her arm around her lover's waist.
"This is gonna have TikTok going crazy." The medic chuckles and Lauren hums.
"I don't care, just make sure you take care of my girl yeah?" She asks them as y/n gets to Emma, a medic taking Lauren's place who with a stern look from Emma runs back to place for Guro's penalty.
"Made a hell of a bruise already." Emma comments, tilting y/n's head up, chuckling as y/n grinned brightly. "Nothing can dampen your spirits, ay squirt?" Emma asks her.
y/n shrugs and is helped down to the medical room where they begin their usual check, y/n too dizzy to pay attention to the noise outside.
Lauren was the cause of the noise, with five minutes to go of the normal first half and at least ten minutes of added time, her head had ducked and her shoulders tensed.
She glared at Ashleigh Neville from across the pitch as the reset, now 3-0 up from Guro's penalty. The whistle blew and Bethany England passed back to Grace Clinton.
Grace quickly had the ball stolen from her feet as Lauren raced through the players and hammered the ball into the net. Emma cheered, hands shooting up in victory.
Lauren assisted another goal and, on of Sam's and the Australian ten assisted Lauren's second goal since y/n had been taken off. The two strikers shared a grin as the whistle blew, 6-0 up at half time.
Lauren listened to Emma's pep-talk with jumpy feet, the woman finishing finally and allowing her to go see y/n, Lauren practically sprinting down the corridor.
Lauren opened the door to the medical room to find y/n doing some sudoku. An icepack held on her head with her other hand. Lauren chuckled which caused y/n to grin.
"Baby!" y/n smiled, opening her arms.
"Hi gorgeous." Lauren said, bringing y/n into her arms and pressing a kiss to her hair. Her eyes pushing down to the crutch and now supported ankle of y/n with furrowed brows.
"It's a sprain, from the earlier tackle, I was no help with running on it, but couldn't quite feel it." y/n explains, Lauren taking over holding her icepack.
"How long you out for?" Lauren asks worriedly.
"Two weeks, three at most." y/n reassures as a medic comes in saying they had let Emma know and that she was okay to go back to the dug out.
"Coat." Lauren hums, pulling y/n up and taking her own coat off wrapping it around y/n.
"They're going to notice the number." y/n warns, there being a number '10' sewn into the Chelsea coat on the left chest piece. It wasn't very big, but y/n was sure they would notice it.
Also the fact the coat was nearly eight inches too long for her and engulfed her body. But it was so warm, and smelt like Lauren so y/n didn't care if anyone saw.
Lauren walked slowly with y/ n who was giggling away with the crutches in hand, and before she could get outside, Lauren tugged the girl back.
"Come 'ere." Lauren hummed, pulling y/n into her chest, pressing their lips together. Lauren licked at y/n's lip, pushing her tongue past her lips so she could sweep her mouth with her tongue.
y/n was slightly shocked at the kiss and as Lauren pulled away, a smug smile on her face as she pecked at y/n's lips once more, the girl felt as if she could of fainted.
"You alright guys?" A voice asks and the two turn to see Bethany England stood with a smirk on her face, already knowing about their relationship due to the fact she was on the England team.
"Hey Beth." y/n said sheepishly.
"Maybe don't make out in the corridor guys." Bethany chuckles and y/n rolls her eyes at her jokingly before she goes out to the dug-out, Emma clapping her on the back as she moved to sit down.
Fran and Ann grinned at her, both out today due to slight injuries. Fran threw the blanket over y/n who sighed in the warmth as she placed her crutches down.
The three chatted away, waiting for the second half to start which it did, with another Lauren goal. y/n looked over to Emma in shock the woman just chuckling.
Lauren scored another four minutes after, assisting another one for Sam after another seven. Emma leaned over to the shocked y/n who was confused about where this type of Lauren had come from.
"She warning them." Emma explains and y/n looks up at the scoreboard and the names underneath hers.
James 20'
Reiten 41'
James 44'
Kerr 45 + 3'
James 45 + 9'
James 46'
James 50'
Kerr 57'
"Warning them about what?" y/n asks Emma who chuckles.
"What happens when the touch you." Emma tells her, as she gestures Mia Fishel to warm up, just as Lauren gets sixth of the game. As soon as the time hits seventy minutes, Lauren is take off for Mia, the girl panting as Emma claps her on the back.
"I should get y/n knocked out every week." Emma teases and Lauren shakes her head.
"Don't you dare." She denies as she climbs over a row, sitting next to y/n who quickly rips Lauren's coat from herself and wraps Lauren in it.
"Where did that come from?" y/n asks the girl in shock, Lauren shrugging as she swung an arm over y/n's shoulders pulling her into her chest. "They'll see." y/n warns, settling her head into Lauren's shoulder.
"Let them. I don't care." Lauren says simply.

°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。°。
y/n chuckled as she finished reading the tweet, her head on Lauren's shoulder as the girl traced patterns into y/n's bare shoulder, the two had hanged into more relaxed clothes as they got home, the two of them in sports bras and joggers as they sat and watched 'Big Mouth'.
The Chelsea groupchat had been going crazy - videos of Lauren's goals and the two of them together being sent in and laughed at people enjoying their win and evening.
"My superstar." y/n hummed, pressing a kiss against Lauren's neck lovingly. "Played so well today baby." y/n continues, leaning up to peck at the corner of Lauren's lips.
"Hmm, only because they hurt my girl." Lauren denies, leaning down to press a long kiss to y/n's lips, their tongues meeting, y/n grins into the kiss, giggling as they pulled away.
"Hmm, think Emma will try and get me hurt every week if that is the response." y/n says softly.
Lauren huffs, pulling y/n onto her lap and squeezing her waist tightly as y/n laughs, settling her back against Lauren's chest, the girl leans down and pecking kisses against y/n's cheek.
"Emma tries to do that, I'll kick her ass." Lauren states and y/n laughs.
"You can't do that to our manager." y/n laughs and Lauren chuckles, smiling softly at the sound of y/n's laugh.
"Then I'll get Reece to do it." Lauren says simply and y/n laughs again, turning slightly in Lauren's lap so she was buried into her neck.
"Okay." y/n hums, closing her eyes as Lauren ran a hand down her back.
"I was really worried today." Lauren says softly. "When you hit the ground. Jesus, fucking hell. I could have knocked Neville out." She continues.
"But you didn't, and well done for that." y/n says, pressing her lips against Lauren's neck in an innocent kiss.
"You sure your ankle is okay?" Lauren asked, hand running over the booted ankle in worry.
"Fine baby. Stop worrying." y/n says and Lauren hums, sitting back and slouching. "I love you Lauren." y/n tells her.
"Love you too baby." Lauren promises her. "What do you think about not being so careful?" She then asks, wanting to get the question out before it burnt up inside of her.
"I think, I better hope they notice your name when I wear it next game." y/n grins and Lauren chuckles, tilting her head down to press a kiss to y/n's lips.
"Gonna be the hottest WAG." Lauren says with a wolfish grin.
"Shut up." y/n laughs but grins when Lauren pulls her closer.

Streamlight TLR-7 Streamlight has been in business for over 45 years, so they know the ropes when it comes to delivering quality lighting solutions for professionals from all backgrounds. They also manufacture laser-sighting equipment and lighting for weaponry, in addition to their popular flashlight range. The three TLR-7s, the TLR-8 and the TL-9 are the three options available for lighting. Streamlight is an ISO 9001:2015-certified company based in Eagleville, PA, USA. You'll also find their lights displayed at various military bases and other government venues. The P320 is a great starter pistol, as it is reliable and accurate. It has a Picatinny accessory track as well as a three-point safety for taking down. You are able to also swap out the grip modules by being modular. The P320 is also easy to conceal, which makes it ideal for carry in concealed situations. It's also available in smaller sizes, like the P320C, which comes with a double-stack magazine. Round counts are limited to a certain number of rounds. Sig Sauer has announced that its P320 pistols failed to meet safety standards. The issue was identified during the drop test. The guns would accidentally fire which made the shooter vulnerable. Primer drag is thought to be the main cause of this problem. The acceptable failure rate for military is less than per 2000 rounds. The service is currently working with Sig Sauer to resolve this problem. These pistols might need to be replaced or repaired by specialized operators in the interim. The P320 pistols have a range of problems that need to be resolved. The firing pin is harder to work on than the primer. It's susceptible to breaking and the grip frame isn't as sturdy as some other pistols. The trigger assembly of Sig Sauer pistols was broken during testing. The striker was not up to specification. It split during use. These issues can also cause the pistols to explode when dropped, which is danger to the shooter. Shipping costs are expensive Sig Sauer is the manufacturer of the P320 pistol. The pistol P320 is a striker-fired pistol , but without an external hammer. The trigger operates under spring pressure. The pistol is popular with civilians and law enforcement. Sig Sauer now faces several lawsuits for defective firearms. The lawsuit filed against Sig Sauer states that the design of the P320 was not safe enough from the outside. The pistol can be capable of firing even after being dropped. The complaint also states that the model P320 did not have a sufficient sear-striker connector. After his P320 was accidentally fired After a P320 was accidentally fired, a Stamford police officer was sued. Vincent Sheperis was a member of the SWAT team from the Stamford Police Department and was wounded when a gunshot ripped through his left knee. Long wait times Sig Sauer P320 M18 pistols are available to buy. The muzzle flip is improved thanks to the high bore axis. Picatinny rails can also be found in the trigger guard. They are available in full size or smaller sizes. They are 28.1 pounds and measure 7.2 inches in length. P320-M18 pistols are sold in various calibers. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE SOULS
Tumblr media
by helloliriels for @flashfictionfridayofficial
“You can’t download the ENTIRE soul!!!”
“What do you MEAN?! How are we supposed to get him back into a corporeal form, if we don’t have all of him?!!!” Sherlock gave the angel a sideways glance that indicated his distrust of this entire scheme!
“Dear me! You should have asked him?!" the angel chided! "Have you no concept of heavenly protocol?”
Aziraphale was beginning to sweat as he pointed at the blazing signs posted all over the computer lab, “we have to leave SOMETHING there in its place or someone will come looking for it!”
DO NOT DOWNLOAD
THE SOULS!
Illegal Torrents could end
in Eternal Torment!
The signs read.
There was a pitchfork and some highly suggestive images of screaming faces copy+pasted below each. Sherlock snorted as he read them.
Alongside were other, seemingly unrelated warnings:
Know the Risk! Save your Disk!
and
Heavenly passwords should
be 777 characters long!
If it isn’t made PERFECT ...
it isn’t made SECURE!
“Obviously,” he rolled his eyes, “I have considered such details,” Sherlock mused, unwilling to be distracted while he was manoeuvring this critical phase of the process.
“How do you know this will work in the first place?” His fingers continued to fly over the keyboard. Backing up John Watson’s soul onto a secured hard drive he had procured from … well … he’d rather not say where from … was the easy part. Leaving an identically sized file and marking in the system was a bit trickier to pull off … but he knew the coding …
“I DON’T!” Aziraphale fussed.
As he finalised the transaction and slipped the thumb drive back into his coat pocket, he gave the angel another hard glare. “Let’s go!”
They made their way through the pristine white corridor and rounded the next, before they heard a small explosion behind them.
Sherlock kept walking. Aziraphale stopped, looking behind him with worry.
When he turned back around and caught up to the quickly dissappearing witchfinder-detective - coat flapping as they flew down the stairs - the man was smiling! “I figured a little insurance wouldn’t hurt.” he said smugly.
“But … but you -?” Aziraphale’s eyes grew wide, “you can’t set fire to heaven!!”
“You know ... you hold on to a surprising amount of rules for one who’s already been fired?” He was still grinning.
“I prefer to think I haven’t completely burned my bridges!”
“No. You’ve just burned their server room.” Sherlock deadpanned, wiggling the jump drive for Aziraphale to see. The only remaining evidence.

Schools and universities
2 years ago, I made a list of fics where Sherlock and John are students in high school, college, or university. I have some more to add now, plus fics where they are either instructors or investigating a case in an academic setting.
Academic Eros by deuxexmycroft (47K, NR, Johnlock) It's John's last year doing theory at university before he starts training in a hospital. But to get there, he first has to pass the infamous Dr Sherlock Holmes' Biochemistry paper ...
After School Special by Sexxica (38K, E, Johnlock) Not even his fantasies could have prepared John for what happens when he is caught hiding under his chemistry teacher's desk. The prospect of detention has never been so exciting. Cooperative Principle by bendingsignpost (56K, E, Johnlock) As the newest instructor at St. Bart's, John has been explicitly warned to never do Sherlock Holmes any favours. Too bad the sex is so good. First-order Idiots by weweretold (54K, E, Johnlock) At a conference, Sherlock Holmes, researcher in deductive reasoning at St. Bartholomew College of Engineering, meets John Watson, military robotics researcher at Polytechnical University of Kabul.    "We’ve only just met and we’re going to work on a research grant proposal together?”    “Problem?” How to Sleep with Your Enemy in One Semester by 221b_careful_what_you_wish_for (9K, M, Johnlock) Visiting professors John Watson and Sherlock Holmes are longtime academic rivals — and now unwilling office mates — at a prestigious American university. When their tense arguments give way to an undercurrent of mutual attraction, their war of wits turns into something more personal — until it goes off course. A party, a phone number, and deserted office at night might just bring them back together.
Learning Curve by thpontiacbandit (41K, M, Johnlock) John is a Kindergarten teacher. One of his students, a boy named Henry Holmes, refuses to speak in school. John is determined to get to the bottom of it, and that is how he meets Sherlock Holmes.
Love or What You Will by miss_frankenstein (31K, T, Johnlock) John is an English professor who specializes in War and Post-War Literature and Sherlock is the brilliant yet impossible Ph.D. student assigned to be his TA because no one in the Chemistry Department is willing to put up with him. And - somewhere between Waugh and Plath, e-mails and takeaway, novels and villanelles - they fall in love.
My Love, My Game, My Vocation by jaradel (42K, T, Johnlock) Fifteen-year-old John Watson is one of the youngest students to be admitted to winter term at Pacific Tech. That's not all - Professor Moriarty has chosen John as the new lead for his most important project, where he'll be working with young physics genius Sherlock Holmes. But nothing is quite what John expects when he finds out he's rooming with Sherlock... Oh, and there's an evil plot to thwart!
On The Fence by BeautifulFiction (13K, T, Johnlock) The murder of the King's College fencing champion leads to revelations about Sherlock's past. Will it be the point that tips them from friends to lovers, or will they remain on the fence?
Parallel by brbsoulnomming (77K, M, Johnlock, OFC/OFC) There's a case at a secondary school/University, some series of threats or string of bizarre murders that has the entire campus shaken. In the course of the investigation, Sherlock and John meet two students. One is well liked if not popular, athletic, intelligent without showing off, involved only because they were close to a victim or witnessed something important. The other is a loner with no regard for social norms, an insufferable genius, always in the chem lab, and involved because everyone, including teachers/professors, think they're behind everything.Sherlock and John are responsible for these two meeting. And, because they both want to help with the investigation, they get to watch them become friends and fall a little in love. And that makes them feel things about themselves that they've been working very hard to not feel, thank you.
Point of Maximal Impulse by Smirkdoctor (orphaned) (15K, E, Johnlock) Today was the first standardized patient interaction, and John was nervous, and very nearly late. He knew it was silly, but the act of finally introducing himself as “Doctor Watson”, of laying hands on another living, breathing human aside from his learning partner for physical exam maneuvers...in a medical capacity...well, it felt huge. He took one last deep breath and rapped three times on the door of exam room 221-B, listening for acknowledgement from the patient within. “Oh, do come in,” drawled the richest baritone voice John had ever heard.
Rhyme by parachute_silks (72K, M, Johnlock, OFC/OFC) Sophie Heaney is suspected of killing her mother and her mother's lover; John and Sherlock arrive at Oxford University to work out whether that's true. In the course of their investigation they can't help but notice some uncomfortable parallels between Sophie's relationship with her friend Amy and their own increasingly tension-filled friendship. *Feelings* ensue, which the two not-quite-couples attempt to deal with while simultaneously trying to catch a murderer.
stay (just a little bit longer) by subtext-is-my-division (15K, E, Johnlock) John may not be an expert, but he's pretty sure that shagging your ex is a bloody awful idea.(Shame the sex is so good, though.)
Teacher's Pet by Rehfan (40K, E, Johnlock) Captain John Watson decides to teach Anatomy and Physiology at Sherlock's uni. Lucky for Sherlock. The Baker Street Nativity by SwissMiss (99K, E, Johnlock) Fusion between Sherlock (BBC) and Nativity! (2009 movie starring Martin Freeman). Sherlock is a primary school teacher and John is assigned to be his classroom assistant. Together, they are charged with putting on the school's Nativity play. What could possibly go wrong?
The Boötes Void by J_Bailler (24K, M, Johnlock) Research time at the telescopes of Cambridge's Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory is a highly sought-after resource for the university's postgraduate students. On a swelteringly hot summer weekend, there is a bit of a cock-up with the bookings… The Burning Life by Morwen_Maranwe (229K, E, Johnlock, Warstan) After being shot and invalided from the Army, John is living a despondent life with a wife who has no respect and no love for him any longer, yet he is desperate to make their marriage work. In a last ditch effort to save their marriage, he moves them out of London and to some small, nameless town where his good friend, Mike Stamford, has been able to get him a job as a teacher at a secondary school. There he meets a teenage boy who he has an undeniable connection to, and who has the ability to make his life seem less meaningless. Though he knows that it’s wrong, John just can’t stop the relationship he is developing with Sherlock from growing. It slowly begins to spiral out of control, consuming his entire life like a wild fire and changing him in ways he didn’t think were possible anymore. The Camford Dares by writerfan2013 (17K, T, Johnlock) Sherlock is being mysterious and secretive and John is being particularly stubborn and their annoying case in a well-known university town is not helping anything. Case!fic! Mystery and infuriation but ultimately johnlock.
Wait by roselavy (78K, E, Johnlock) Liberal arts AU. Sherlock Holmes is a reclusive literary writer in need of a flatmate after burning through his latest book advance, John Watson is midway through a PhD in art history.

She #MiriamCarey couldn't even get out of her car, so HOW did they get in the building?
On October 3, 2013, in , Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist from , attempted to drive through a security checkpoint in her black coupe, accidentally hit a security rail, and was chased by the Secret Service to the where she was fatally shot by law enforcement officers. A young child, Carey's daughter, was found unharmed in the car after it was ultimately stopped.
On October 3, 2013, in Washington, D.C., Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut, attempted to drive through a White House security checkpoint in her black Infiniti G37 coupe, accidentally hit a security rail, and was chased by the Secret Service to the United States Capitol where she was fatally shot by law enforcement officers. A young child, Carey's daughter, was found unharmed in the car after it was ultimately stopped.[2]
White House incident and police response[edit]
At about 2:12 p.m., a vehicle driven by Miriam Carey allegedly struck one of the White House barriers at the intersection of 15th St. NW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.[3] At 2:13 p.m. she drove into a restricted White House checkpoint at 15th and E Streets NW, without authorization and without stopping. When an off-duty U.S. Secret Service officer placed himself and a metal bike rack in her path to block her exit, she struck the bike rack and the off-duty Secret Service officer who was standing behind it with her car, knocking both the bike rack and the officer onto the ground.[4] Secret Service attempted to arrest the suspect but she continued to drive the car evasively, colliding with one officer who fell on the hood of the car and rolled off.[5][6] Carey then drove 40–80 mph down Pennsylvania Avenue, weaving through traffic and ignoring red lights. Police gave chase east on Pennsylvania Avenue for a dozen blocks. The chase then proceeded south on 1st St. NW/SW between Peace Circle and Garfield traffic circle.[4]
At Garfield Circle, uniformed and plain clothes Secret Service officers attempted to box the car in with at least five marked vehicles and one unmarked cruiser, on United States Capitol grounds, on the sidewalk on the east side of the circle. Four uniformed and two plainclothes officers proceeded to surround the car on foot with guns drawn, shouting orders. Carey eluded the box-in by backing into the Secret Service cruiser behind her and driving away, striking a Secret Service officer in the process. The suspect proceeded north at high speed, circling Peace Circle twice and then proceeding east on Constitution Avenue. She got as far as the northeast corner of the Capitol grounds, in the vicinity of the Hart Senate Office Building and came upon U.S Capitol Police Truck Interdiction Point at 2nd St and Maryland Ave NE with raised barriers blocking her path.[7] She then made a sharp left and crossed over the median and struck an unmarked police officer's vehicle that had stopped in front of the Hart Senate Office Building. After ignoring multiple police commands, she revved her engine in reverse at a U.S. Capitol Police Officer who was approaching the vehicle from behind.[7] As the officer ran towards the median to avoid being struck by Carey's vehicle, he and another officer from the U.S. Secret Service started firing. The two officers fired nine rounds each at the vehicle. The vehicle crashed into the kiosk and came to a rest. She was unconscious and did not get out of the vehicle. No officers fired after the vehicle crashed. It was at that time that officers discovered there was a young child in the vehicle and they safely removed the child from the vehicle.[7]
A shelter in place order was issued for the Capitol building during the incident.[8] A Capitol Police officer was injured when his car hit a barricade[9] during the chase near 1st and Constitution Avenue, and was medevaced by a U.S. Park Police helicopter, call sign "Eagle One" (N22PP), to MedStar Washington Hospital Center with non life-threatening injuries.[10][11] A U.S. Secret Service officer was struck by Carey's car on the White House grounds.[1][9]
Aftermath[edit]
Carey was brought to MedStar Washington Hospital Center and pronounced dead. There was an 18-month-old child, believed to be the victim’s daughter, in the back seat of the car. The child was unharmed and taken to a children's hospital.[12] The FBI obtained a search warrant and conducted a search of the woman's home in Stamford, Connecticut to try to determine the possible motivation of her actions. As a precaution, a bomb squad robot was used to enter inside Carey's house at 114 Woodside Green.[13][14][15][16]
Both U.S. Capitol Police and Washington DC Metropolitan Police revealed that they believed that the incident was isolated and not part of a terrorist plot.[17] Miriam Carey's sisters have questioned police actions in this chase.[18] In February 2014, Carey's family officially announced a wrongful death claim against the US Capitol Police and the Secret Service but still have never officially filed a lawsuit. The statute of limitations for a wrongful death lawsuit is 3 years. That time has expired.[19] The Secret Service has been criticized by various organizations for its handling of the incident, questioning the use of lethal force for a traffic mixup, citing at least 22 instances in which intruders have successfully breached the White House itself without resulting in a fatality. Carey's U-Turn at the White House check point and her subsequent path away from the building was captured on video by Al Hurra TV videographer Danny Farkas which was used during the news cycle following her death, as well as evidence in the US Attorneys Office investigation. Footage from this video has been used to justify claims that Secret Service used excessive force on Carey.[20] The Secret Service has since refused to release the video of Carey's death.[21]
On July 10, 2014, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced that no charges would be filed against the federal officers and agents, stating, "After a thorough review of all the evidence, the U.S. Attorney's Office concluded that the evidence was insufficient to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officers who were involved in the shooting used excessive force or possessed the requisite criminal intent at the time of the events."[22]
Miriam Carey[edit]
Miriam Iris Carey (August 12, 1979 – October 3, 2013)[23] of Stamford, Connecticut was a dental hygienist licensed to practice in New York and Connecticut.[15][24][25] She was born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. She obtained an associate degree in dental hygiene from Hostos Community College and graduated from Brooklyn College in 2007 with a degree in health nutrition science.[13][26][27][28][29] According to a family spokesman, Carey had previously been hospitalized for postpartum depression.[30] Carey's mother told ABC News that Carey had been depressed since giving birth. Carey's sister attested that she was "not delusional" and had been placed on a one-year medicated treatment plan for her postpartum depression.[21] Dr. Steven Oken, her employer for eight years, described Carey as a "non-political person" who was "always happy".[30] On the day of the incident, Carey was supposed to be taking her daughter to a doctor's appointment in Connecticut.[31] The FBI found two medications in her apartment, as well as a laptop, a flash drive and three nonfunctional cell phones. Federal officials said she may have suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder [32][33] Federal officials said no weapons were found in the car.[34] Carey's boyfriend reported concerns about her mental health and delusions to the Stamford, Connecticut Police Department. On December 10, 2012 Stamford police investigated the complaint and noted that Carey believed herself to be the "Prophet of Stamford" and insisted that Barack Obama had her house under electronic surveillance. These police records were released after a Freedom of Information Act (United States) request made by several media outlets.[35]
On May 20, 2015 a vigil was held in Union Square, Manhattan as part of the Say Her Name campaign to recognize the lives and deaths of black women killed or injured by police. Miriam Carey's family attended the vigil and her name was highlighted as one of the women to be recognized.[36] Carey's name and story has also been featured in the Say Her Name publication "Resisting Police Brutality Against Black Women".[37] Carey has been mentioned by critics of the Black Lives Matter movement as an example of the perceived lack of Intersectionality within the movement, citing the lack of coverage and continued discussion of her death.[38]

“Ministry Spokesperson Stamford Jorkins confirmed this morning that funeral arrangements are underway for slain Ministry official Harmonia Lufkin. The Lufkin family has asked for privacy during this difficult time…”
The common room was dim with the glimmer of dusk; heavy raindrops pattered against glass panes and fires crackled in their grates. Lily was seated cross-legged on an ottoman by the window, Mary’s wireless perched on the ledge, listening to the evening broadcast. Though the radio was turned low, Lily hung on every word.
All anyone had talked about all week was the assassination of Harmonia Lufkin. Murmurs of ‘Death Eaters’ haunted the halls, and Lily had even noticed teachers with their heads bent together at breakfast or sharing a solemn aside between classes.
Assassination. It was such a serious word that even those who preferred to ignore the news got swept up in it. In fact, it felt like the first time people were really paying attention to what was going on. Usually it was only Muggle-born students who whispered to each other about these things, but this — the murder of a high-ranking Ministry official — this affected everyone, and tremors were felt throughout the school.
“Lufkin,” continued the radio broadcaster, “who was appointed Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement under ex-Minister for Magic Nobby Leach, served in her role for nearly a decade...”
“Oh, turn that off, won’t you?” said Mary. “I can’t listen to it anymore. It’s too awful.”
Lily obliged, reaching for the wireless to turn it off, but her hand hovered over the dial as the broadcaster continued to speak.

Roma Wasn’t Rebuilt in a Day
Season preview - 2019/2020
Tumblr media
Judge and jury are still out to ascertain whether Roma are better or worse off than they were last season. A unique club in a unique football eco-system, it’s difficult to gauge anything about Roma at any time. You’ll often hear of protests from ultras, outspoken players, and lots of controversial discussion about Roman identity. The Stadio Olimpico draws parallels with the ancient Colosseum; once you enter you either come out as a hero gladiator or you’re chewed to pieces; usually the latter.
It’s no wonder the capital club have only celebrated 3 Scudetti, although success for Romanisti is measured differently - part of that has to do with the Lazio rivalry, but for the most part it’s about Roman identity and culture. The furor over the club’s treatment of Roman deities, Totti and De Rossi, reflects this.
Incumbent coach, Fonseca, is the latest brave soul to enter the lion’s pit. He wasn’t the first choice (Conte) and probably not the second either - Gasperini, De Zerbi, and Mihajlovic were all linked at different stages of the summer. Conte politely declined with a diplomatic slap in the face that he’s come to master; declaring he was only interested in marrying a project that would put him in a position to win.
Fonseca has a task of Ben-Hur proportions then; being selected from way down the club’s shortlist to guide a team with a volatile fan-base whom one of Europe’s best managers has defined as losers. I’d have fired my agent, but Fonseca is well aware of the all of the above and he’s not one to shy away from challenges. Intelligent and tactically astute, his Shakthar side were well organized as Maurizio Sarri found out during his last Napoli spell.
Amid the rage and outcry caused by Francesco Totti’s resignation from the board, Torino’s Gianluca Petrachi came in to spearhead the transfer campaign - not without his own controversies. Roma’s revolving doors were a frenzy of activity and have only just stopped spinning since Arsenal’s Mkhitaryan whizzed through in the dying moments of the transfer window. Many others departed acrimoniously as they found themselves at loggerheads with the criteria required to be a Roma player. Some struggled with injury as much as they did culturally. On paper the new signings are interesting, but many equally and more promising have come and flopped before them.
Of positive note, Fonseca and Petrachi seem to be of the same symphony; the former speaking clearly of his transfer expectations and the latter appeasing him as best he could. That might sound obvious, but predecessor Monchi was hardly reading the same book, let alone being on the same page. Many of his (failed) signings are still on the books and locked into long, expensive contracts. Symbol of the Monchi era, Javier Pastore, collects a handsome salary for an injury prone player struggling to recapture his best form from years past.
Petrachi can only be judged comparatively in time, but so far he’s followed his coach’s ideology. Fonseca wanted a ball playing keeper; Pau Lopez came in over Perin. A solid centre-back was needed at the last minute to come in for error prone Fazio and Juan Jesus; Smalling signs on a dry loan.
Of the other signings, Spinazzola brings ambition and quality, but also his own injury issues, and hot prospect Luca Pellegrini was sacrificed for his arrival. Gianluca Mancini, was one of Atalanta’s best players last season, was brought in to sure-up a defensive department that didn’t convince last term, but not many former nerazzurri have flourished far from Bergamo.
Diawara joins from Napoli for more playing time, but his promise has only appeared in flashes so far. Veretout gets a chance to prove his worth at a big(ger) club and Zappacosta bring his Premier League experience with him to fix the troublesome Roma right-back crisis, although he was used sparingly during his Stamford Bridge stint.
Inheriting the captain’s armband this season will be Florenzi, another Roman born and bred; with it comes the burden born of the celestial status of the 2 who wore it before him. One of those 2, Daniele De Rossi, made the romantic move to Boca Juniors, but left behind a gaping hole in terms of leadership and Roman identity. Several others found themselves in the departure lounge at Fiumicino Airport, albeit for different reasons. Roma effectively cutting their losses on Schick, Nzonzi, Karsdorp, Gerson, Marcano, and Ponce, while El Shaarawy left for the lure of Chinese riches on the back of a good season, and Manolas had his relatively low buyout clause bought out by Napoli.
Dzeko remained again despite seduction by Conte’s Inter; he’ll spearhead the attack of Fonseca’s 4-2-3-1. Zaniolo also kept his Roma shirt on amid Juventus whispers and he should feature in the line of 3 behind the Bosnian, along with Mkhitaryan and either Under or Kluivert. The 2 deep-lying midfielder roles will be contested by Lorenzo Pellegrini (who can also play as one of the supporting forwards), Cristante, Veretout, and Diawara.
Rugani never arrived, but Smalling did; it’s expected he’ll be a regular starter but it’s unclear who’ll partner him out of Mancini, Fazio, and Juan Jesus. Kolarov is the starting left-back; as he nears 34 Spinazzola will likely be bled into the team with the view to usurp the Serbian. Midfielder-come-right-back, Florenzi, will probably continue to start in defence unless he’s required further afield, in which case Zappacosta will slot into his natural position.
Roma have quality, depth, excitement, and promise, what they don’t have are guarantees. Will all the elements come together as a collective and buy into Fonseca’s philosophies? Will Fonseca and the new signings adapt to the capital pressures of Roma? It’s a lot of change for a scrupulous club with discerning fans and media, but if afforded time Roma can definitely make a claim for that final 4th spot after Juve, Inter, and Napoli. As fate would have it, their biggest threat comes in the shape of perennial and despised rivals, Lazio. The other capital team may not have the same depth or quality, but what they lack on paper they make up for in continuity, and that gives them a head start.
Roma will need to keep Lazio at arm’s distance and fend off Atalanta and Milan until they can start to gel and forge some consistency of their own. Unfortunately for giallorossi faithful, that traditionally happens later rather than sooner at the Stadio Olimpico. More often than not, it’s at that point that the manager also finds himself in the departure lounge of Fiumicino Airport.

Mauricio Pochettino fires Chelsea dig at Man City in first interview
Tumblr media
Mauricio Pochettino fires Chelsea dig at Man City in first interview In his inaugural interview as Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino subtly criticized Manchester City. Last month, the Argentine signed a two-year contract, which includes the possibility of extending it for a third year, and officially commenced his new position on Saturday, July 1. Chelsea has high expectations that Pochettino will guide the team back to the Champions League and establish a consistent presence in trophy contention. As part of their summer transfer activities, the Blues' coach has already expressed his satisfaction with the signings of Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, who have joined the club at Stamford Bridge. Several notable players have departed the club, including Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic, and Kai Havertz, as they seek new opportunities. As Mauricio Pochettino takes charge, more arrivals and departures are anticipated, as he aims to rejuvenate the squad for a crucial first season under his management. Manchester City has been the standard-setter in the Premier League for the past six years, achieving five titles and establishing dominance in domestic competitions. Last season, Pep Guardiola's team achieved a historic treble by winning the Champions League, an accomplishment they had been striving for. Chelsea faced a significant 45-point deficit behind Manchester City in the Premier League standings last season, and Mauricio Pochettino has been entrusted with the immense challenge of swiftly bridging that gap. The Argentine manager is clearly enthusiastic about the opportunity presented to him at Stamford Bridge and has already made statements that resonate with the fervent desires of the fans. During his initial interview at Cobham, Pochettino subtly took a dig at Manchester City by making a grand assertion regarding Chelsea's accomplishments and rich history over the past decade. The 51-year-old stated, "I think it’s important and it’s a culture of winning. In the last 10, 12, 15 years, Chelsea is the greatest team in England. "I know very well the Premier League and what the culture of Chelsea means. I think our fans are excited to again be on the road of trying to win." Chelsea is evidently strategizing for a swift resurgence to reclaim their position among the top teams in the Premier League. Mauricio Pochettino is actively pursuing the signing of Moises Caicedo from Brighton, adding to the recent arrivals of Jackson and Nkunku. The club has high hopes that these new acquisitions will have a more significant impact compared to some of their previous additions within the past year. I woke up on 9/11/01 annoyed that the Giants had lost their season opener the night before on Monday Night Football AND one of the members of my fantasy football team was injured in that same game and lost for the season. Such problems, right? One upside of the morning of 9/11/01, was that I had an unusually late call time for the film shoot I was working on. We were shooting an interview with Tom Selleck at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and I didn’t have to be there until 10:30am. I left my apartment in NJ at 8:30, stopped for coffee and was about to get on the New Jersey Turnpike in Woodbridge right at 8:48am. I remember it was 8:48 because that’s when the traffic report came on 880AM radio (“traffic on the 8s”) and when the news anchor tossed to the helicopter traffic reporter, the traffic reporter nervously and excitedly described a large amount of smoke coming from the World Trade Center. He thought a small plane just crashed into it. I realized I could see the towers from where I was driving and sure enough, there was smoke. A LOT of smoke. Black, pressurized smoke. That was no small plane. That was jet fuel. A jet had hit the towers. I was sure of it. I was also fairly sure a jet wouldn’t hit the towers on accident. Somebody flew it into the towers. This was probably at 8:49am. For some odd reason, I take a tiny amount of pride as a firefighter that I remember me having that thought right then as it happened – that somebody just attacked the towers with a jet. Unfortunately, I was right. I continued on towards the city. Traffic was backing up as people were clearly looking out the window at the skyline more than they were at the road in front of them. I was doing the same. Just past Newark Airport, while staring at the skyline, I saw a second explosion. Although I didn’t see the second plane, by the screams of the news anchors on the radio, I knew it was another plane. I had been right. We were under attack. I instantly decided that I wasn’t going to my shoot. Although I had worked for many a production company / client that would have insisted we try to shoot under any circumstance, I knew that the people I was working for that day were not those types of people. I also knew that the floor in the Waldorf that we were to shoot with Mr. Selleck was the home to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations and was guarded by US Marines (only US embassy on US soil, by the way, although not in the Waldorf anymore). I figured said Marines would not be hospitable to a film shoot happening on their floor that day. I did an illegal u-turn on the Turnpike, the type that only state troopers are supposed to do, and I drove towards home at 110 mph. Along the ride, I either received a call from or made a call to most of my film crew from that day. Needless to say the shoot wasn’t happening. I stopped home, made a few more work calls and tried to figure out what I was going to do. I figured I’d check in at my volunteer firehouse. I felt some sense of relief at the thought of going there and possibly being able to do something. All feelings of relief disappeared when I pulled up and saw a fleet of police cars pulled up hastily at the house next to the firehouse. A fellow firefighter – Dan Martin - lived there. It hit me - his wife Linda worked in the towers. The local cops went there to check on him. I ran inside too. It was about 10am. Literally about 1 minute before I walked into his house – probably while I was parking my car and not paying attention to the radio – the south tower collapsed. I walked in to Danny saying that Linda must be dead. Thankfully, not long after that, he got word that she was OK. I went over to the volunteer firehouse. It wasn’t long before county ambulance units were being dispatched to go to a mass casualty staging area up at Giants Stadium. Soon after that, fire units were also assembled to go and help backfill FDNY stations. Prior to 9/11, the FDNY would have relocated units from City Island in the Bronx to Tottenville in Staten Island before they’d call for outside help. Now,
volunteers from NJ were heading over to backfill stations in Brooklyn. At the time, I thought this was as crazy as anything else I’d experienced that day. I didn’t end up being on the engine from my department that went over. They were there for 2 straight days. On the night of 9/13, I received a call from Dan Martin asking if I wanted to go over to the towers with him and some of his coworkers from the Jersey City Fire Department the next morning. Of course I said yes. Although we were specifically ordered by the chiefs of our volunteer fire department NOT to go, myself (now a career Cherry Hill FF), Dan Martin (now retired from the JCFD), Sean Farrell (now a Captain in the FDNY), and Bob Lasko (now retired from the Sayreville PD) from the Sayreville FD drove up to Jersey City and met up with a large contingency of Jersey City firefighters of all ranks. Although they too were under orders not to go across the river, we all walked down to the Hudson River, got on a tugboat and went across. This was 9/14/01. It was the first overcast day since the attack. It looked like we were going into a scene from a movie. It was dark, grey, rainy and dreary. The moisture in the air held the smoke down close to the ground. As we got off the boat, none of us spoke. As we walked towards the site of the towers, it looked like we were heading towards some mythical dragon’s lair or something. As we got within a few hundred yards of the towers, a boyish National Guard member, armed with an M-16 stopped us. It was clear that that the 20 or so of us were not going to stop and turn around, but a JCFD Captain respectfully “negotiated” with the kid. He told the kid that he personally vouched for all of us and we were here to help. The kid shook his head and we walked by. We got to the edge of the site. The JCFD officers approached some FDNY Chiefs and asked what we could do. The FDNY Chiefs said for us to go to staging, which was at the movie theater at the entrance to Battery Park City. I knew where that was, so I lead the group there. There were dozens and dozens of cops and firefighters from all over, waiting. We looked around there for a few minutes before the JCFD guys said we were never going to get called out of here and that we should just continue on around the site looking for another shot to help. So that’s what we did. We walked the perimeter of the site. I couldn’t get over how huge it was. I thought it looked like Giants Stadium had fallen over. In reality, it was WAY BIGGER than that, but that’s what I thought. We walked around towards the complete opposite side of the site by the Century 21 department store. The Century 21 store was being used as the morgue. In front of the store, lights and generators from Feature Systems, Inc. were powering/lighting the scene. I felt some pride that a film industry supply company was chipping in. I quickly realized that nearly all of the generators and lights that I saw down there on that day – 9/14/01 – were supplied by the entertainment business. I later learned that my good friend Rich Colangelo (sadly, now deceased likely due to PTSD) – a film industry caterer - spent several days down there cooking food for responders. Many people say he was the FIRST person down there set up to do so. We got around to the corners of Trinity and Liberty and finally found a spot that we could access “the pile”. I remember the first thing I saw was a line of Stamford, CT cops moving debris. Jeez, I thought… people are here from everywhere. Most of the people working this corner were cops and others who weren’t really equipped to be there. We at least had our turnout gear. The JCFD guys said we have to find a better spot. So we kept walking. We eventually made it all the way back to the west side of the site where we came upon the command post for New Jersey’s Urban Search and Rescue Team – NJ-TF1. They were operating out of the 1st floor of a building that was part of the World Financial Center – the office complex across the street from the towers. Several of the JCFD guys knew several of the
NJTF1 guys, and next thing we know, we were paired up with a team of people that were going onto the pile. The 20 or so of us went in with a search dog, some FDNY paramedics, and some other random people. We weren’t operating in any official capacity – I just think the NJTF1 guys saw it as an opportunity to get us all away from the command post. We relieved some North Hudson Regional Firefighters who were on the pile with circular saws. They just gave us their saws and buckets and walked off. We worked on the pile for several hours. The search dogs made a couple of “hits”. The paramedics went to these “hits”. In the hours we spent on the pile, we found one small tuft of hair and one human knee. I knew the second I saw the pile that there would be no survivors, but the magnitude of the loss really set in when I realized what we were actually finding. After a few hours, police officers started to order everyone off the pile. We didn’t know why. We assumed there was some sort of collapse or something happening. All of a sudden, fighter jets were circling overhead. We figured it was a good time to get out of there and find lunch. As we were walking away, we passed a contingency of politicians that were walking towards the pile. I shook then Senator Jon Corzine and Congressman Charlie Rangel’s hands. Little did we know that while we ate lunch – and the reason they cleared the pile and brought in the fighter jets – was that President Bush arrived on the scene. His famous scene where he stood with the retired FDNY guy with the bullhorn happened while we sat on some barge and ate lunch. We had no idea. We ate and rested up for a bit and headed back to the pile. Security was much tighter at this point, and we couldn’t make it back in as far as we were. We helped out at the edges for a few more hours before it got dark and we decided it was time to go. We went back to the shoreline, begged another tugboat operator for a ride, and crossed back over the Hudson River. I was soaked, covered in dust, and exhausted. We got off the boat to a tremendous surprise. There was a line of people, literally as far as the eye could see. They were making a sort of bucket brigade, ferrying supplies such as water and food towards the very tugboat we just got off. There were literally like 1000 people there. I couldn’t believe it. And all of a sudden they all started to clap. I didn’t know why they were clapping. I quickly realized they were clapping for us. It was an overwhelming moment. It got even more overwhelming when about the 10th person I passed on the line was somebody I knew. My dear friend from high school, Melissa Eimer, who I hadn’t seen in several years, was there helping out. She lived in Jersey City and felt like she had to try to do something. So there she was at 10pm loading a tugboat with water. Even though I was covered with dust and who knows what, she gave me a big hug. It was a moment the two of us recall to this day. A rare bright spot in the misery. The months after 9/11 were challenging. For a few weeks after the attack, it was nearly impossible to do a film shoot in NYC. The city was being extremely restrictive issuing permits, people didn’t want to fly, security was extra tight getting around… it was a mess. For people, such as myself, who were freelancers, this meant financial disaster. The fall was always my busiest time for work, the time where I made extra money to hold me over during the slower times. Now most of us weren’t working. This was tough. For the first and only time in my life, I had to collect unemployment. Thankfully the state of New York (where I got my check from) made the process easy for people whose livelihoods were affected by 9/11. I still have disdain for the people who arbitrarily decided that film permits were going to be restricted due to security reasons (and putting thousands out of work), while the people who worked in security were making money hand over fist. But that’s another discussion. After a few weeks, work not only went back to normal, it exploded. Everybody wanted to
come and shoot in NYC. It was their way of helping out. I remember being called for jobs that people wanted to shoot on the beach or on golf courses. In winter. In the New York area. We were like, we appreciate the thought, but you probably should go someplace warmer. One of the few paying jobs I did have in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, oddly enough, was shooting a series of public service announcements with Laura Bush. Mrs. Bush was delivering several messages to the nation’s children about what happened. Our location? The White House. You want to talk security! It took us 4 hours to get our equipment / crew through security. For a ½ hour shoot! We made it all the way through security, when finally somebody said “whoa this is a big crew. What piece of equipment do each of you operate?” Myself (the production manager), Mike Michelin (the producer), and Jordan Tarazi (our production assistant), were the only ones not operating equipment. Dirk Detweiler, our Executive Producer and Assistant Director was sly enough to say he helped with the lights even though he didn’t operate any equipment! Mike, Jordan and myself stared blankly. We weren’t allowed in! We had to wait out on the lawn while the crew shot inside. They said Mrs. Bush was lovely and wonderful. Big George himself even came in at the end and thanked everybody. On the way out of the White House, our assistant cameraman, Joe Volpe, stole a stack of White House napkins. I’m still not sure this was a wise maneuver on Joe’s part, but he got away with it. I feel like 2/3rds of the shoots I worked on after that had something to do with 9/11 (I even made this https://www.facebook.com/670826079/posts/10158242579986080/?d=n). Public service announcements. Ads that supported firefighters / cops / NYC / etc. As great as it was to be working and working on things that were “helping”, it got overwhelming. 9/11 was happening again. And again. And again. I heard more people’s stories than I care to recall. Many of these jobs were total freebies. They were public service announcements for one thing or another that somebody would beg you to work on for “a good cause.” Sure… I’ll come in and work for free on something that’s depressing! I spent nearly all of 2002 working at a company called LMA at the corner of West Broadway and Duane – about 8 blocks north of the WTC site. Each day, you’d walk to the office and you’d see the site. You’d leave and it would be there. If it was dark out (which it usually is when you’re leaving a production office), you’d see the glow of the lights. It looked like a football game was being played down there it was so bright. In the year or so I worked out of LMA’s office, I don’t think there was a single day where the entire office wouldn’t stop and talk about their experiences on 9/11. Every single day. We’d all stop. We’d all talk and/or listen. Sometimes it went on for an hour. I guess it was our way of dealing with it. You’d stop out for pizza or a drink after dinner, and there were workers from the site. Whether at Puffy’s Tavern or the Tribecca Tavern or wherever… there would be guys in there wearing their Carhardt jumpsuits and work boots. You weren’t sure if they were construction workers or firefighters or police officers. Probably all of the above. But you’d see them - everyday. The work seemed endless. Oddly enough, the thing that sticks with me the most out of all this was what I’d also see everyday in Penn Station. I would take the train into NYC to go to work, get off my train, and walk towards the escalator up to the street. For several years prior to and after 9/11, Penn Station was undergoing major renovations. They had temporary plywood walls up to separate the construction areas. In the hours/days after the attacks, people had posted “missing” posters of people unaccounted for in the attacks. Eventually these posters grew from a few to several hundred. So every day, coming off the train and later getting back on, you’d have to walk through this hallway of posters. It was something I dreaded twice a day. This went on
for about two years. The gauntlet of the lost. And then one day, the plywood walls were gone. The renovations were completed. Penn Station, although still dreary compared to Grand Central Station, was like new! And although this may sound harsh, the missing posters were gone! Thank God! The 9/11 related shoots went away too. Back to making promos for crappy TV shows and commercials for stupid products! Again, thank God! For me, 9/11 was a daily two-year process. Thankfully, I didn’t lose anybody close to me (only two people I very casually knew from high school). I didn’t get injured. I eventually recovered from the economic hardships. In the grand scheme of things, nothing bad really happened to me. But I needed to move on from it. I don’t need to see footage of the attack. I don’t want to go to memorial services or monuments or even the World Trade Center site or museum. I don’t need to wear a tee shirt or fly a flag that says “never forget.” To be honest, I’d love to be able to forget. But that won’t happen. 9/11 was undoubtedly an influencing factor as to why I swapped my careers around (media stuff as my main job before while volunteering as a firefighter to being a career firefighter and doing media stuff on the side). 9/11 is a part of who I am everyday. (The first photo taken by me on 3/1/01. All other photos taken either by me or Jersey City FD colleagues on 9/11/01 and 9/14/01)

KEVIN PFEIFER
5 Rounds for Time 50 Double-Unders 15 Hang Power Cleans (95/65 lb) 10 Pull-Ups 5 Handstand Push-Ups
Warm Up - Mike’s
Background: This Firefighter Hero WOD is dedicated to Kevin Pfeifer, FDNY, Engine 33, who was killed on September 11, 2001.
On Sept. 11, Joseph Pfeifer ran into his younger brother, Kevin, amid the chaos at the foot of the World Trade Center. It was a welcome surprise for the brothers, New York City firefighters who lived six blocks apart in Middle Village but rarely saw each other on the job. Joseph, chief of the First Battalion in Lower Manhattan, had raced to the scene when he saw the first jet hit the north tower. He was setting up an operations base in front of the towers when he saw Kevin, a lieutenant at Engine Co. 33, who came in response to the second alarm. “We spoke a few words,” Joseph said, but time was short. Exchanging concerned looks, they strode into the north tower and got to work. Kevin headed up the stairs, while Joseph directed maneuvers in the lobby. Shortly afterward, the south tower collapsed, plunging the area into darkness.
Following orders to evacuate, Kevin gathered his company and began the long trek down. Joseph believes his brother was near the 40th floor at the time of the collapse. “Somewhere around the 10th floor, he realized he had to switch to another stair,” he said, because rubble from the first tower blocked the way out. A team of firefighters from Engine Co. 7 who ran into Kevin on their way down the same set of stairs said he told them the right way to get out. “He kept his company together, and he made sure the other firefighters had a way out,” said Joseph, who was standing in front of the tower when it fell, engulfing him in a cloud of dust and debris. Engine 7 made it out 30 seconds before the north tower collapsed. His brother did not.
Kevin Pfeifer was a hero, but he wouldn’t have seen in that way, said his brother. “He was just trying to do his job,” Joseph said. That was how he was. “He was quiet,” said his mother, Helen Pfeifer of Middle Village, “but not really quiet.”
An easygoing man with a quick, easy wit, Pfeifer was never one to toot his own horn. He liked to do things well, but he did them with as little fuss as possible. As a lieutenant, he used his unassuming manner to bring out the best in the young firefighters he trained. “He didn’t yell or scream,” his brother said. Instead, he was the kind of leader who got those he commanded to do things they didn’t realize they could do. “He saw in people more than they saw in themselves,” he said. “He was a quiet guy who made a difference.”
Growing up in Middle Village, Kevin was content to let his older brother, an accomplished athlete whose pictures cover the walls of the family home, take the spotlight. “We’d joke about how he got all the glory,” said their sister, Mary Ellen Machcinski of Stamford, Conn. But Kevin didn’t mind. It wasn’t that he was shy or a doormat. He just didn’t need the acclaim. “He was just so cool,” she said of the little brother who tagged along willingly on his older siblings’ adventures.
Kevin Pfeifer grew up to become the kind of adventurous man that boys dream of becoming. “I always wanted him to sit at a desk,” his mother said. “But he wanted the fire department.” He worked as a paramedic before joining the fire department in 1990.
A licensed pilot, he loved flying his Cessna to Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard. “He was a little more daring than I,” said Joseph, who never flew with his brother. Kevin, who never married, doted on his nieces and nephews. During the summer, he would take them sailing on Jamaica Bay in his Hobie catamaran. “He got a kick out of being with the kids,” his mother said. He taught them all how to fly on computer flight simulators and displayed an unerring instinct for choosing the perfect gift, like the miniature backpacks he sent his teenage nieces one Christmas.
He left a different kind of gift for his mother this holiday season: a photograph of himself snapped on Sept. 8 by Canadian photographer Jean Nichols, who was doing a fashion shoot outside Engine Co. 33 on Great Jones Street. “Kevin was never one to be photographed,” his mother said. But he stood still for Nichols, a former firefighter from Montreal. “Three days before the World Trade Center, can you imagine?” his mother said. “Otherwise, we really wouldn’t have a decent picture of him.”

Man and woman rescued from their submerged pickup truck during snowstorm
Firefighters in Connecticut on Monday rescued two people from a pickup truck that had become submerged in the icy waters of Long Island Sound at the height of the snowstorm.
According to officials, the driver was doing ‘donuts’ in the snow-covered parking lot in the harbor at Cummings Park in Stamford when the truck plunged into the frigid water.
The rescue the followed was captured on video, which shows Stamford firefighters in special thermal gear going into the water to pull the occupants of the sinking pickup truck to safety.
This pickup truck became submerged in the icy waters of Long Island Sound off of Stamford, Connecticut, at the height of the snowstorm on Monday, prompting a rescue
A female passenger was able to climb out of the cabin after the truck plunged into the water while doing donuts in the snow-covered parking lot at Cummings Park
The Stamford Fire Department deployed a tower ladder truck to rescue the sinking truck’s two occupants
According to a statement from the Stamford Fire Department, the incident began unfolding at 2.10pm, when a report came in about a vehicle in the water off of Cummings Park.
Responding firefighters found the four-door pickup truck partially submerged and floating about 40 feet away from the shore.
The female occupant of the truck was observed standing in the bed of the truck and shouting that there was a man trapped inside.
‘The extreme winds, snow, and tide continued to move the vehicle and cause it to fill with water,’ stated fire officials.
Three firefighters wearing cold-water rescue suits immediately jumped in the water and swam out to the truck, while a tower ladder truck took up a position on the water’s edge and deployed the aerial ladder out to the vehicle.
Rescuers deployed this aerial ladder out to the submerged vehicle
Firefighters calmed down the woman and helped her climb onto the ladder. A man remained trapped inside the rapidly sinking vehicle
The firefighters in the water helped the woman climb onto the tower ladder, but the truck continued sinking amid the worsening blizzard.
As the vehicle became completely submerged, one firefighter who has been holding onto the male victim’s hand throughout the rescue finally was able to pull him through a small open rear window.
Once he was free, firefighters placed the man into the tower ladder and both victims were brought to shore to be examined by paramedics.
The man was transported to Stamford Hospital for further treatment. The woman refused medical attention.
Three firefighters wearing cold-water rescue suits worked to pull the male driver from the submerged vehicle
One firefighter who has been holding onto the mans hand throughout the rescue finally was able to pull him through a small open rear window
The man was placed on the ladder and later taken to the hospital for treatment
Firefighters and divers remained on scene and pulled the waterlogged truck from the Sound by 3.33pm, reported Stamford Advocate.
No rescuers were injured during the incident, which is now being investigated by the Stamford Police Department.
