What is this? Pink Onyx AU is a Steven Universe AU focused on interactions between Steven and Jasper and is intended to be read after you have finished Steven Universe Future, as it contains many many spoilers for the series. If you have watched it already, great! Welcome! The goal is to bring you a Jasper redemption arc that we couldn’t get due to time and cooperate restraints on the Crewniverse. I hope you enjoy!

I do not own these characters or their likenesses except for the single fluffy thembo fusion I created for the story. This is just a fan comic.

Comic is PG-13 for some angsty themes, minor blood, violence, and gem-cussing.

When do you post? Typically when you see this post pinned, I’m on a bit of a break, but when Nyx wakes up (this post goes away) the comic is due to be released 1 page at a time at 7am EST most days. I try for a daily release. Sometimes I skip a day if I’m behind. Episode release dates are always announced ahead of time by a few weeks.

Is this a romantic ship AU between Jasper and Steven? Nope, more like an aunt and her nephew trying to figure it all out. No romance between these two here.

What kind of fusion is Pink Onyx? Are they good or bad? Pink Onyx is a fusion of a protagonist and an antagonist, so their alliance is yet unknown, but they have Steven’s good heart and Jasper’s loyal nature. They also have Steven and Jasper’s flaws, so they can be volatile and emotionally explosive at times, too.

What are Pink Onyx’s pronouns? Onyx likes they/them, but also answers to he/him and she/her, especially when Steven or Jasper is dominant over one another. They also seem to take on a fluid role and prefer a she/her when in a caretaker status. They dislike it/its.

What does Pink Onyx sound like? Personally, I hear them as a youthful, masculine tone. Like Steven if a little older. But I also enjoy when people say they hear them as a gruff, Amazonian-type feminine. I enjoy and endorse both.

Do Jasper and Steven enjoy being fused to one another? For now, it is a struggle, but they enjoy what the other brings to the fusion even if they won’t say it.

Does Pink Onyx need to eat and do human things? If so, do they enjoy it? They don’t need to do them, but they do feel the discomfort without them. Things like breathing, eating, and sleeping are optional for Onyx, but they will become quite irritable if not allowed to do them. They greatly enjoy sleeping and trying new foods.

What does Jasper think about having human organs when fused? She’s pretty grossed out by the idea of organic matter going into her mouth and coming out of other places. The heart beating and lungs breathing she can feel for the first time, and it is highly strange for her to experience.

What is Pink Onyx’s favorite food? They adore anything watermelon flavored and Cookie-cat ice cream products

Does Pink Onyx have any special fusion powers? They do, and as they learn about themselves, more powers seem to come out. Each of their base component appears to be enhanced in a unique way. They have Pink Diamond at their core, so the destructive potential is also there.

Why is Steven hiding Pink Onyx from others? This AU occurs directly after the events of "I Am My Monster", so Steven is very emotionally, and mentally, raw. He fears judgement for running back to Jasper, who in the past, was part of so much trauma he already endured.

Pink Onyx seems to know nothing about human culture and gem culture despite being a fusion. What’s going on? Jasper and Steven agreed to fuse, but they have yet to open up to one another about much else. The fusion exists because they agree to do so, but Jasper won’t open up about her emotions, and Steven is so sensitive yet that he is not sharing because he knows Jasper won’t want to hear it. This causes Onyx to be unable to access both of their memories easily, but they can bring it out with enough effort.

Before I hyperfixated on that: All Things End by Hozier (obsessed with the last 45 seconds of it).

Oh, wow! That's a bunch! Thanks so much for sending the ask, let's dive right in! <3 ✨ Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉 This is hard, especially right now because I'm really struggling with my writing. My ideas aren't clear and I feel like they don't line up with one another or that the tone shifts abruptly because the way I'm feeling has changed between one writing session and the next. I guess I hope that my writing makes people FEEL things. That's my main goal most of the time. And I think I'm pretty good at surprising people, too. So, to put that in compliment form I think I'm alright at conveying emotions and I have a knack for those plot twists. XD 🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc. I feel like I'm always writing about death even when I'm not planning to, it just kind of works its way back in there. Also, I guess another common theme would be the deep connections that people can form with one another, against all odds, against their better judgement, and sometimes even to their own detriment. I guess that's a hopeful theme in a way, people staying even when you're sure they'll walk away. Also, my protagonist needs to be a little messed up in the head. Anything else is hard and boring to write. I love writing crazy people and then humanizing them to the reader. 👀 Tell me about an up and coming wip please! Barring AM spoilers, and the Sukuna fic I teased about on my alt, I want to write a short story about a world where voluntary self-elimination is both legal and readily accessible. The idea's been floating around in my head for a while - what that would look like, what the logistics around it would be, how friends and family would react, the inevitable desensitization towards death. I do hope to get that one down sometime soon because I'm really inspired to write it. 🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels? I think I hinted at this already, but I love it when one character is sure the other is going to leave them, but they don't. Not even necessarily in a romantic sense. It could be a friendship, or a parent-child relationship or what have you. Just that feeling of, "I've gone too far, it's over" but it's not, because that person would never leave. Staying by each other's side whether or not they understand the full context. Not even necessarily needing the context to know that they're on your side. I guess that's why it's a recurring theme in LS's relationship.

🤩 Who is your favorite character to write? This used to be an easy "Levi, hands down - all day, every day." But lately, Slayte has become my favorite. Especially with her current struggles in the story, I just have a soft spot for her and the stuff she has to go through, I guess. She's also the character that most meets my "crazy protag" criteria, so there's that. 🎉 What leads you to consider a fic a success? When people tell me I made them cry. It sounds mean, but there's no better feeling. That's when my inner critic has no choice but to shut up because OMG THEY SHED REAL TEARS. (I've defo cried, too, while writing AM so no worries.) 🌞 Do you have a preferred time of day to write? When everyone is either asleep or out of the house. Early mornings are the best, but work always gets in the way. I would be better able to answer this question if I wasn't so tired all the time. ^^

🎢 Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride? I think it's the Sukuna darkfic duology on my alt @azureashes. It's just so crazy and out there. Idk if I would consider AM a "wild ride" since it definitely has its wholesome and comforting moments. I actually think hurt/comfort is a huge theme in AM. Maybe we should add it to the tags. I'm so sorry i completely missed it???? Thank you so much, I adore the Remington Steele au too so yes here is the info about the three on my WIP list!!!

(For the unfamiliar - the Remington Steele AU is a Jim/Ed OFMD AU in which Jim is a detective, Ed is a conman playing their detective boss, based loosely off the 80's show. It's mainly a smutty kink series, so far, with lots of Feelings. The next few parts will also have some h/c because I'm an h/c gremlin)

So there are three more parts "planned" and partially written in the series. #1/#2 of the series is posted. The rest will be written in the next 2-48 months. This is not a quick updating series lmao.

#3 - hypothermia - and you won't give me a straight answer

This is when we start to get a bit more 'not just smut'! Jim and Ed go on a case up north in winter, and in the process of a chase scene, Jim falls through some ice. Ed takes care of them. Also will feat. Remember when I said there would be more h/c in the next two? Yeah, that's because #3 and #4 started out as me wanting to write mildly whumpy fics for this au XD

While on a case, Jim goes missing. A day later, Ed, snooping around trying to find them, gets caught by The Bad Guys and - surprise! - Jim got caught and is being held. Featuring hurt slightly feral Jim protecting Ed, awkward cuddling while in handcuffs, and bonus Lucius.

This one will continue themes of "Jim take care of yourself or I will take care of you," but also expand on "now Jim wants to take care of Ed, too." And maybe some discussion of long-term kink relationships like adults! And probably some sex because this series revolves around smut!!

Happy STS! Since you're on the second draft of ur WIP, how was the progress of the first draft? What are some things you learned during it? What is something you would do differently for your next first draft?

It's so rare to see a writeblr going through revisions and i find your commentary very inspiring. One day i too will be telling myself to leave the sentence be for another draft LOLLL

Oooh I love this question so goddamn much!!! (well, ig it's sort of two? three? questions.) I had so much fun answering this<3333 It was an excellent chance at reflection.

How was the progress of the first draft?

(lol I did not intend for my answer to be this long but it just kept going. But I like the idea of being very transparent about the journey because I hear a lot of nice, summed up "one day I sat down and wrote a novel, the next month I had a manuscript and started querying" stories and I think that can be really invalidating for people for whom the journey isn't that smooth if that is the only narrative you hear.)

I think I came up with the story idea some time in 2019. It was one of those, "princess runs away from an arranged marriage but [redacted due to spoilers]" concepts but at the time I was worldbuilding for other things so I put it aside for later.

About a year later, when I had not made much progress on my other WIPs (due to not having enough worldbuilding ideas to carry a fantasy or sci-fi story and banging my head against a wall trying to think up something I was happy with), I decided, ah what the hell, I'll try this instead.

I picked it because it was a simple concept--an idea fit for a standalone novel on the shorter end, with a fairly small setting and requiring little worldbuilding. It seemed like it would be good practice before I seriously tackled my more ambitious WIPs.

It still took a while to actually get writing. I tried three or four times to make an outline--one was more than 8000 words--and ended up scrapping each of them because when I got to actually writing the scenes I had outlined I found them dry and soulless. I was just going through events that needed to happen but there was no emotion, no humour, no themes, nothing. I tried to write the first chapter once or twice but I started the story too early in the timeline and lost the momentum to keep going. Finally, I wrote a scene somewhere in the middle (the one where Sorin figures out Adris is a girl) and it was the first I was actually happy with. I had fun writing it and then reading it again, and it finally felt like there was some "life" behind the plot I had been failing to outline. I rewrote that scene in both first and third person, decided I liked 1st better, and tried to keep adding to it. Then I had about 3600 words. I wrote another scene near the end (when Isadred and Firnen meet; though I changed this later) and it gave me some direction to work towards.

Then I did not touch the project again for several months.

One day in November of 2021 (NaNoWriMo month but I hadn't heard of it yet) I decided to just go for it and put a bunch of time aside to write like crazy. I started from chapter one and had two rules, 1. Start chapter one as late into the story as possible, and 2. keep it going--don't edit (not even spelling unless it is absolutely critical for me to make sense of later), if I get stuck just jump ahead to the next scene I can write, and if I don't know what happens next just ramble about everything that can't happen until I figure out a situation where that does not apply.

It worked. Really well. The next things I knew (about three weeks in) I had roughly 48 000 words. Some days I was hitting 13-14 000 words per day. Then I took a break because uni and came back to it in April 2022. Same rules, same deal. Suddenly I had 112 572 words.

I got stuck on the ending. I wrote a few scenes but didn't like them. So I figured I would just call it a finished manuscript, put it aside for a while, and come back to it when the time was right.

About two months ago I thought up part of a better ending while in the shower and a few weeks ago, just before I started the second draft I figured out the rest. So I knew it was time and I went back to it.

What are some things you learned during it?

I had a lot of fun. I laughed a lot at the banter and dramatic irony, I highlighted my favourite lines to look back on later, and I left funny comments for myself in the margins. The weird part was that I was not expecting it to be fun at all. I see so much writing content about how hard writing is and how much writers hate it, especially first drafts, and I have done my share of banging my head against a wall (especially in my other WIPs) but, for me at least, it is one thing to get stuck on a plot point, but if I am finding every single new sentence to be a struggle to get down it is probably because my story has not come to life yet. I am writing too much from a place of "hit each plot point in my outline" and not enough from a place of "you know what would be fun/gut-wrenching/shocking/funny/clever/insightful?".

Believe it or not, the middle section was the most fun to write.

I have also come to believe ardently in these commonly touted morsels of advice:

if your story is losing momentum after only a few chapters you either don't know where you are going with it or you have started too far before the inciting incident.

Name your first draft draft zero, garbage draft, word vomit (or in my case, "idk what the FUCK this it looks pretty cool tho"), and just expect utter garbage.

Don't look back, just keep going. You know that thing in improv where they do the "yes, and..." exercise? Do that.

If you are stuck on what happens next, skip that scene and go to the next. There is a chance you may not even need the scene you were stuck on. Long time skips in the same chapter are allowed.

If you don't know what to write just sit down and start rambling. As long as you know what you are trying to write towards, eventually you'll end up there and you can cut the bloat later.

Know your climatic moment before you start--not your ending, but the big final showdown the story is building to. You don't have to know how it resolves (I didn't figure that out until like six weeks ago) but know who is in your final battle and where it takes place.

Don't research. Don't worldbuild. If you need a piece of information you don't have, write [insert type of medieval ship here] and move on.

What is something you would do differently for your next first draft?

I am honestly not sure on this one... I do wish I was a more skilled writer prose-wise because my first drafts would need a lot less editing later on if descriptive, poetic prose came as naturally to me as dialogue and emotional one-liners. But all I can really do for that is keep practicing.

The only other thing I wished I had done from the start was keep a journal, log, or blog of my progress, and save some of the funny comments and [somehow our two romantic leads have to sword fight their way out of a masquerade ball in this scene while dressed to the nines] notes-in-brackets I left in the draft but went back and deleted later once I actually filled out the scene. Hence the existence of this blog now.

One of these days I would also like to develop a proper writing schedule to make more consistent progress throughout the year (instead of the random sprints of activity followed by months of not touching it that I do now). But between the ADHD and the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome I don't know when that will happen.

Here's the start of the next chapter of "Those Who Wander." My other WIP is too chock full of spoilers (and in too rough of a shape, if I'm being honest) to post an excerpt.

The phone’s Batman theme ringtone woke Jack from a light sleep. His hand found it on the nightstand on the second try. With his eyes still closed he pressed the call button with his thumb and mumbled “Bebé, ¿estás bien?”

“Yeah,” Marc replied. His defeated tone contradicted his words.

The discrepancy nudged Jack fully awake. His eyes flicked to the alarm clock. Its glowing red letters said 1:37. “You just get in?”

“Sorta. I…” He chuckled nervously. “Can I come over? I’m sorry it’s—”

“Of course!” Jack swung his legs over the edge of the bed and looked for a pair of shorts on the floor. Marc hadn’t been over in a few days, so Jack hadn’t bothered picking up. Although his boyfriend hadn’t said anything aloud, Jack could tell that clutter bothered him. Keeping things tidier made cleaning easier, so Jack didn’t mind meeting him in the middle. “Press the buzzer whenever—”

The buzzer buzzed as Jack stepped into a pair of shorts.

Jack laughed softly as he padded from the bedroom to the front door. “Presumptuous, aren’t we?”

“I was pretty sure you wouldn’t mind.” Jack was glad to hear the smile in Marc’s voice.

Jack buzzed him in. “Correct.”

i have one near-finished wip that i really worked hard on, it's around 10k right now and it's a 4433 soulmates + can't-stay-more-than-5ft-apart fic and i pressured myself that the sex has to be mindblowingly good for them and bc of that i've just....not. written. it. i love love love what i have for it so much so maybe one day when i just Sit Down for it i can Write It and it'll be finished in a breeze another fic i'm really working hard on, but i think y'all know, is Racing Heartbeats. i've been working on her for 2,5 years now and she's still not finished and she's sooo close to being finished but my brain just says...No.

🎈describe your style as a writer; is it fixed? does it change?

one constant in me as a writer certainly is that i'm planning-obsessed. i plan out every chapter/scene/work whatever first before i even start Actually Writing. this helps me tremendously bc by the time i get to writing it all goes by in a breeze since i don't have to think of What's Next, i know that already. i know what i want to write, i know where to go with my writing, if i can't write for a whole week/month/year and i want to pick a work back up again i can do that because i planned it beforehand... yeah it makes it easier for me. beyond that: i feel like i constantly change as a writer and am heavily influenced by the other things i read. for instance, my characterisation of max has changed tremendously since reading three small daisies. yesterday, my beloved @vmyosotis did mention these things ab my writing:

omg what i noticed about how you write your sex scenes i think what makes them especially hot is how much u convey how turned on they BOTH get simply by getting the other one off yk. like that self satisfaction, that and how attuned they are to what will do the trick, [spoilers] and how driven they are when it comes to just get the other one there, how much pleasure they get from just that you KNOW? like it's SO fanning myself

I'll share this WIP line that will probably never see the light of day. You kind of need to know to appreciate it, maybe, but it still kind of makes me laugh. **"Don't fucking touch me - filthy little - do you ever bathe?” 

"I try not to," Peep chirps, and then with a fresh grin they reach both hands out in Hazel's direction - making grabbing motions as if threatening to touch his face."** 🎢 (Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?) Had To Be You, hands down. Mostly because it would so wildly fluctuate from 'this part is so easy let me publish four chapters in a row' to 'I've taken two months to finish this chapter and I still hate it.' It was a good time over all but boy was it a ride to get through. ✨ (Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉) I already did one do I have to do another...(jkjk) I think my long/run-on sentences are pretty well-crafted and tend to add exactly the sort of punch/affect I'm trying to manage. ⛔ (Do you have a fic you started, but scrapped?) Oh I have so many of these. I wouldn't even try to list them, but I'll highlight one of my personal favorites. I once had a fic planned that was essentially Addison being assigned Captain on this massive ship who's sole purpose was to transport "precious cargo." Spoiler alert, the cargo was an imprisoned Trep. It was very saucy, very much meant to highlight Trep's abilities as an Imp and was not necessarily destined for a good ending. It would have been fun, I think.

💖 (What made you start writing?) I couldn't tell you, honestly. I've been writing since I was a kid, since before I even remember doing it. We still have one of the first 'books' I ever wrote. What I can say is it's just...everything to me. It's a distraction. It's soothing. It's a way for me to connect with my partner and my friends. When I'm really sad, or really happy, or hell I'll say it even horny, writing is there, you know? I can do anything I want in there. I can write anything I want. I can bring these characters that mean everything to me to life in my own words. I can put them through hell, or get them comfort, or find them love. I can explore the world's brightest themes, and its darkest. I don't know. It's how I get all the things inside out. I don't really have any other creative pursuits that I feel like I'm good enough at to do that, so writing is the way. 💌 (How do you feel about comments and feedback?) I love comments. I love to know what I did right, what resonated, what people are thinking about what could happen next. I also love expressions of joy/enjoyment like keysmashes and such. I'm sensitive to criticism though, even well-meaning criticism, which is purely a me issue but can make getting feedback/comments kind of stressful sometimes. Especially when I'm nervous about a write to begin with.

❌ (What's a trope you will never write?) Never is a strong word because there have been times I've dabbled in things I thought I'd never dabble in. And I honestly can't think of any specific one right now that makes me thing 'ew no never.' I don't enjoy most things centering around pregnancy, though. Little cute moments with pregnant characters is one thing, but I don't like to focus on it much. 👀 (Tell me about an up and coming wip please!)

I have so many WIPs....a few fan favorites in the works are more chapters for the reincarnation AU for Hazing, Fable finally gets to meet Keet's pets, that one chapter for To The Left where these two finally get down, and a scattering of other hazing stuff. 🤲 (Would you please share a snippet of a wip?)

Okay...let me dig one up here. **Home, he thinks - spitting the word in his mind even as his feet turn in its direction. A tiny townhouse he doesn't know the first thing about fixing. A ratty bed, a shitty TV, a computer that barely connects most of the time. The self-inflicted bare minimum because it has never really been his home - only a place for his pets. A place to land when he wanted to rest because where the hell else was he supposed to go? 

It's not his home, he thinks - bitter, angry, aching. 

It's not his home, he thinks - paused outside, glaring up at the shingles and the brick. Humans pass around him - souls whispering at a distance, arching briefly in his direction until they're far enough away to snap free. Busy, loud, and something stings at his eyes. 

"Keet?" 

He starts, turns, and there's Fable. This silly little human who resists his pull but somehow keeps finding him anyway. Who'd held him at his worst, and called themself his friend, and who's here now, again. Standing near his apartment, watching him with a turned head and a curious stare. 

"Are you alright?" 

Keet opens his mouth to answer - closes it again - and then finally, after a second, he says instead,

"What are you doing here?"**

SG - To Make It Count/Making It Count by @jazzfordshire Back at it again with the Queen of AUs. I don't think I need to say much besides this is a Titanic AU, except everyone's gay and nobody dies. Well, some people die, but no one we care about. Not really a spoiler, since it's literally in the tags. The sequel is all of them living in New York and dealing with WWI, the Great Depression, all that fun early 20th century stuff, but like, in a non-depressing, lesbionic way. There's also background Sanvers in both.

What if they had a FWB arrangement, but, like barely spoke to each other because Bea is so traumatized by her past and Ava doesn't want to rock the boat. Bea hasn't spoken to her family in 13 years, but her brother is getting married, he wants her to come and bring her girlfriend, and say heck off to their parents. Problem is she doesn't have a girlfriend. So she decides to ask Ava, the girl she's had a crush on for almost a year, to come to London with her and pretend to be her gf for the wedding. Trope-a-palooza! Mutual pining (I'm sensing a theme in my recs...) fake dating, only one bed, and some really good smut. Also there's a WiP "sequel" that's Ava's POV of the whole thing.

1. More of the latter. Usually, I'll see or hear something, and a scene pops into my head. Then the story just sort of forms outward around it. Why is it happening? How did George get to this particular moment? How would he react? How would others react?

I have drafts saved that are only one or two lines that will hopefully morph into full- fledged stories one day.

-Self-indulgence. Y/N in all of my fics are, to some extent, based on me and who I would like to be. Not just as George's love interest (though that is a very big part of it 😁) but as someone who has traits that I admire but don't possess myself.

-I want to fill in the gaps from the original story and answer my 'what if' questions.

Earth: What do you think is the foundation of your WIP?

If you mean what is it at it's base/core, I would have to say it's a journey of acceptance on multiple levels. Each character has to face their own internal struggle, and learn how to overcome and accept it. This is a small theme I've noticed not only in my current long fic, but also in my other WiP's that I add to on occasion and plan on making my next primary focus once my long fic is complete.

Fire: What’s a scene that you are dying to write?

Definitely the end chapters of my long fic. I can't say much without it being spoiler, but everything finally comes together (obviously lol).

Spirit: What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received on your writing?

I can't pick just one, but I would say all the amazing comments I received on White Lady. On days when I doubt my writing abilities, I read through the comments on there.

1. “It’s alright,” Robin says softly. “We just sat down.”

“I know, but I’m still sorry.” Thad smiles at them before sitting down, turning his smile to Star. “Hey, kiddo, how you doing?”

“Good.” Star won’t look at him either. That’s okay.

“Good, good. Tacos, huh? Bad day at work?”

“Humans,” Robin mutters. “Someone made a comment, I lost my temper, it was stupid . . . but I won the case!”

“Yay!” Thad pauses to make his own taco, then turns to Star. “Do you want some help?”

“. . . please.”

“I’ll do it,” Robin offers, reaching across the table. They walk Star through the process of making a taco and ask him every step of the way what he wants and what he doesn’t. Choices.

2. Thad’s grip loosens. He doesn’t uncurl, but he does meet Robin’s eyes now. The stump of his left hand shakes uncontrollably. When Robin tries to hold it steady, Thad flinches.

“Sorry,” they breathe.

“No, no, not-“ Thad takes a deep breath, shakes his head. “Not your fault, sunshine. It just hurts.”

“Bad?”

Thad nods. Robin presses their lips to the scarred flesh, rubbing it with their free hand. If it gets worse, they can get the hot water bottle and painkillers, but first they have to deal with Thad. His safety is more important at the moment.

“. . . What happened?” Robin asks. “Was it back there?”

Thad nods. He wraps his arms tightly around Robin, pulling them into his lap and curling around them like he wants to protect them from the world. Robin doesn’t hesitate before relaxing into the contact.

3. Now here he is, joking with Thad about the amount of sugar their husband consumes like it is nothing, saying he is going to cut back on the caramel he puts in the frappuccino. Thad laughs and asks if Ezra wants a tip.

Star watches the exchange, his blue eyes bright with repressed laughter. Ezra makes a joke and Star’s hand flies up to cover his mouth. There is a pinkness to his cheeks that has nothing to do with the freezing temperatures outside.

Interesting.

“Rascal,” Thad mutters, joining Robin to the side. “I swear that kid thinks he’s the next-”

“Shh,” Robin says quickly, placing a hand on his arm. “Watch.”

“What wh-oh.”

When Star goes up to get his drink, he smiles at Ezra, who smiles back. He holds Star’s drink a moment longer, leaning on the counter with a smile.

“I don’t think I’ve had the honor of meeting you before.”

4. “Hey, Ezra,” Robin says.

“Good evening, Mx. Castillo.”

“Formality? Ezra, I thought we were past all of that.”

Ezra shrugs. Star steps in to take his coat and hang it up. Thad nearly speaks up, but the joy on Star’s face stops him. If they are both happy then there is nothing to be gained by speaking, and everyone recovers in different ways. He of all people should know that.

“Well . . . I thought–I thought I should be a bit more formal. Meeting my partner’s parents and all that.”

Thad freezes. His breath catches and his eyes burn. Parents. Ezra just called them Star’s parents. They have kids. He grips the spatula hard enough for his knuckles to crack and sneaks a glance at Robin. They’re staring at Ezra, face pale and eyes wide. For a moment, there is nothing but silence.

Say something! Thad yells to himself when he notices Star, how his shoulders hunch and he slips to Ezra’s side, tucking close when Ezra puts his arm around his waist. Let them know this is what we wanted!

“Oh,” Robin breathes. “I–there’s nothing to be formal about. You’re family, no formality is needed.”

5. “I have a lot of emails to respond to,” Robin says. They don’t need to tell Thad everything, but if they disappear without an explanation, then Thad will tear the apartment apart looking for them. “And then studying. But is there anything you wanted to do today? Since it’s my day off and all?”

Thad shakes his head. Great, now he’s back to not speaking. Robin fights back a sigh and slides their phone into the side pocket on their leggings. They glance at Thad again. A blush has crept up his cheeks and he runs his hand over the stump of his left arm. When he notices Robin looking at him, he freezes, slowly lowering his arms to his side.

“You want to do something?”

“. . . can we-” Thad coughs, pulls his shoulders in close.

“You can ask for things, Thad. You’re allowed to want to go and do something.”

“Can we go get chocolate shakes?”

Thad whispers the words so quietly that Robin thinks for a moment they’ve misheard. The dark red creeping up Thad’s neck tells them everything they need to know. Robin makes sure to smile, keeping their body language open and welcoming as they stand up.

“Of course! We can totally go and do that! I think we’ll have to wait a bit though, since we just had breakfast.”

Thad nods. “I understand.”

“As soon as I finish the laundry, however, we can totally go.”

“I can help?”

Let him help. It’ll give him something to do.

“Sure.”

6. “Good morning to you too, sunshine,” Ezra mutters, pouring coffee into Daniel’s mug. He hands it to him and presses a quick kiss to his cheek. “I’m glad to see you before work.”

“You saw me when you woke up,” Daniel groans, sitting down at the counter. He rests his chin on his hand, letting out a huff. “Didn’t have to wake me up.”

“But you look so cute in the morning, I just had to.”

Ezra delivers the tease in a deadpan tone. Daniel rolls his eyes, already waking up despite himself. The shower turns off and he gets to his feet, hurrying to brush his teeth before anyone else gets in. Of course, doing so gives him a lovely view of Star as he gets in his work uniform.

“Star, are you nearly ready to go?” Ezra calls down the hallway.

“Sadly,” Daniel calls back, voice muffled by his mouth full of toothpaste. “He’s got his uniform on.”

Star laughs, quickly kissing his cheek on the way past. “Good, good morning, D-Danny.”

“Mornin’, love. Ezra’s got coffee ready.”

7. Daniel hurries to get his own coat on and holds the door open for Ezra, locking it behind them. They pile into the minivan and the engine roars to life.

“We really need to get a new one,” Daniel comments.

“Thank you,” Ezra mutters dryly. “I had no idea whatsoever.”

“You’re very welcome.”

“Knock it, it, um, knock it off,” Star says from the backseat. It’s his turn to sit with the kids and he shakes a rattle over Laura’s head. Her giggles fill the car as they pull onto the street.

“I miss Kai,” River whines for the third time that evening. He kicks his feet back and forth, sneakers digging into the back of Daniel’s seat. “I wanna see his concert.”

“That’s where we’re going, pumpkin. Can you please stop kicking my seat?”

“Sorry, Papa.”

Thanks for the ask! Sorry, this is so long!! I got a bit carried away. What can I say? They’re good questions :)

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

Oooh I love this question. One of my favorite things to include, particularly in longer fics, are scenes doused in liminality. I'm a little bit obsessed with the idea of it. I keep coming back to liminal spaces, scenes at the threshold of the past and the future, at points in the story where characters have to make a critical choice. For example, in Love Laid Bare (which I swear I haven’t abandoned!) that scene happens in chapter 2 in the empty parking lot outside the diner, at dusk. Simon paces back and forth, having a grand moment of introspection, and he’s waiting for Baz to show up, but isn’t sure if he’s going to go with him or not. (Tiny unimportant spoiler here) He ultimately makes the choice to get in the car with Baz, which kickstarts his arc and the rest of the story. It's a scene that takes place in a classic liminal space (empty parking lot), at the threshold between day and night, and marks a turning point in Simon's life.

Another favorite theme of mine is the idea of second chances. Second chances at love with the right person, second chances at life, second chances at learning and growing and becoming a better person and doing things right the next time around. People, in reality, make a lot of mistakes. So do my characters—and I love to let them make good on the opportunities to fix them!

👀 Tell me about an up and coming wip please!

Oh god I have so many wips, but none of them (with the exception of LLB that is published, but incomplete) are snowbaz. The two biggest projects I’m working on right now are:

1. An angsty Yuri on Ice fic:

Yuuri quit skating at 18 after he was partially responsible for an on-ice accident that brutally injured Victor’s knee, which never healed enough and eventually forced Victor to quit, too. They find each other ten years later in Michigan, where Yuuri is now a medical resident and Victor manages an ice rink. Victor convinces Yuuri to get back into skating, and they compete against each other in the Adult Figure Skating Championships. They’re well matched against each other, even though Yuuri’s out of practice and Victor’s got his bad knee and hardly anyone even watches the adult competitions and they’re both getting a little old to be jumping around like they used to :) Throughout the fic, Yuuri struggles to let himself fall in love again, both with the sport and with Victor, but he figures it out in the end.

2. A series of three long (20k+ each), interconnected one-shots for Haikyuu:

They’re all in a similar style as All The Things We Don’t Mean, with a nonlinear narrative and short, punchy scenes. Lots and lots of angst across the board, of all different kinds. One is published already here. The second installment, which I’m working on now, follows a different pairing from the first. They were high school sweethearts, but after about ten years, when neither of them is happy, they realize that maybe the reason things are so hard is because neither of them had time to grow on their own. They got together so young and have hardly spent any time apart. So they break up, and the fic starts there, and works through the way they grow apart and change and find themselves and then find their way back together, all of it interspersed with flashback glimpses into the way they fell in love in the first place.

🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

I would say, just go for it! Start writing! Post that first fic, even though it's not perfect. Write what you like and want to see more of, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea.

When I first started, I spent way too much time reading and re-reading my own fics, trying to see them the way everyone else might see them, and trying to make them palatable to everyone. I was SO scared of getting my first negative comment, and worrying about that took a lot of the fun out of writing. Spoiler alert: it's not possible to please everyone, and everyone gets negative comments sometimes, and the level of engagement with your fics (comments, kudos, shares, etc) will go up and down no matter what you do, so you might as well just do what brings you joy!

On a more practical note, I would also recommend finding people you can swap writing with—either as a formal “you both beta each other’s fics” kind of a thing, or as an informal “hey let’s sprint together and share some snippets as we go” or “hey look at this scene I wrote that I think was really good/that I think needs some work”. External feedback is extremely valuable for improving as a writer, but I’ve found it to be way more fun (and less scary, and often more helpfully targeted to what you want and need) when that feedback comes from people you already trust and who know your writing style and likes and dislikes and strengths and weaknesses.
