I had a convo with @morallygreyintrovert about an idea of a fic with songs for Sam, Dean and Cas (like in Zoey's Extraordinary playlist for those who know this show). Her post is there if you want to take a look. I told her I had a list of songs somewhere, so there it is, I thought I could share it with the class while I'm at it.

Sorry Dean, but I would have loved to see that (and there is definitely some singing in SPN). Anyway, here are the songs I thought about:

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Journey (for season 4) Dean could sing this to Cas when he is still bind to Heaven (and goes through repetitive brain washing sessions). Jensen would totally be able to perform this song like in the video and I would pay a big amount of money to see that, and Misha walking like the girl in the clip with his own trench coat, I can totally picture that one in my head.

I feel you by Depeche mode (for season 4-5) Cas would be the one singing this one and it would be about the famous profound bound between them, when Cas starts feeling for the first time, doubting, and being drawn to Dean, to his "precious soul".

Never tear us apart by INXS (for season 4-5 or 8) Cas again would sing this to Dean, the "two worlds collided" in the song could be Heaven and Earth, angels' world and humans' world that could never tear them apart. Despite their differences, Cas loves Dean’s "precious heart".

Couldn’t stop caring by The Spiritual Machines (for season 5) this one is only for Dean, he would sing this one for himself, while he is fighting against the destiny (the “she” in the song), while the Apocalypse is about to happen and the angels are pressuring him to say yes to Michael, insisting he could be the one to stop it because it’s his destiny. And the title, I mean, it's Dean, "the most caring man on Earth" as Cas said it himself (15x18).

The way I feel by 12 Stones (for season 8) That’s just Dean in Purgatory, while searching for Cas. Feeling how much he needs him and how much he hates feeling like this. And the praying part, well you, "I prayed to you, Cas, every night" (8x02).

Next to me by Imagine Dragons (for season 8-9) This one is for Dean not feeling he is worth anything, but despite everything bad he did (not being able to save Cas from Purgatory, kicking him out of the bunker, etc.) and feeling like he let Cas’s down, well Cas stays by his side and Dean doesn’t understand why.

Killed or Be killed by Muse (for season 9) It’s MoC!Dean, it has fear, love, demons and fate in it. It has everything and it’s just perfect.

I wanna be your slave by Måneskin (for season 10) I don’t know if someone thought about that one before, maybe I’m totally wrong but I think it could be Demon!Dean about Cas, because despite being a demon Dean would still not be normal about Cas and without his human filters it could totally go that way. Too bad we didn’t see more of Demon!Dean with Cas, otherwise we would have seen this. You know in the karaoke bar, Cas enters and Dean is on the stage drunk singing this to him. Just imagine.

I won’t say I’m in love from Hercules (for season 13) When Cas comes back from the Empty, Dean would totally sing that and the muses that sing here could be Balthazar, Metatron, Crowley, Charlie, and Sam (maybe they could be even more, like Benny for example could also be here, but there’s only five muses in the movie).

Stole my heart by Tanner Cherry (for season 15) I don’t know why but I can totally picture Cas singing this to Dean in the dungeon instead of that heartbreaking confession, and it’s already funnier to think about it.

Bonus:

I’m so excited by Pointer Sister Dean should sing that to Cas if he can’t use his own words to say what he feels, plus it would be fun to see that. Another big amount of money I would spent just to watch this happen on my screen.

Let’s have intercourse by Crazy ex-girlfriend Dean could sing this one to Cas, and of course, there would also be the dancing part.

I was made for lovin’ you by Kiss I don’t know why but I can totally picture that one too, where Cas sings this to Dean. Same thing, lots of money to see that.

Country boy by Alan Jackson the last one but not the least. Do you know who would sing that to who? Dean to Cas, human or without his wings, and it’s even funnier because those two idiots in love met on September 2008, which happens to be the date of release of this song. So it’s destiny, plus the country thing with cowboys hat and all, this song is obviously about them. Like almost every other songs on the planet since I saw them meet on my screen.

Anyway, I think I rediscovered all my playlists with Destiel ears and that's how you got what's above. Hope you'll like the ideas, or at least the songs. There's FOR SURE more songs that could be there, don't hesitate to share with the class.

I really think they should've let Sam kill Lucifer in the s13 finale. Not because like, he 'deserved' it or anything, but because it would've actually been... interesting. First on a storytelling level--killed not, as foretold, by his rival Michael but by his own perfect vessel! The one who trapped him before, the one who endured hundreds of years of torture at his hands, a mere mortal! And just in time to save his brother! It goes from blah blah boss fight to satisfying, poetic twist. And then on a visual level: nothing could be worse than the Michael/Lucifer zipline fight. It could only be improved by having Sam surprise Lucifer at the last second when he was about to finish Michael!Dean off. A little oh! button to the climax, a breath of life and unpredictability in an otherwise rote fight. Also, Sam would've looked really sexy doing it. Just saying.

My brain divides SPN into several… i don’t know… Sections? Seven to be exact (I think).

Season 1-2

Season 3 (cuz I always forget it)

Season 4-5

Season 6-10

Season 11-12

Season 13-14

Season 15

At this point I’m in fact not sure, why it’s like that? But between these sections it felt/feel like something changed, like a new book began or smth like that.

I am personally fond of 4-5 and very fond of 6-10.

The first two seasons seem like a separate thing to me because it‘s like, what they originally wanted the show to be about i think? The Prologue or smth so to speak.

Season 3, I never know what happened there, when we rewatched it I was frequently like „Oh! That was season 3?“. There’s just not much that really sticks out? Besides Dean going to hell maybe. Which I only remember because Cas pulled him out in 4.

Seasons 4-5, the apocalypse, I think I liked the concept of it? Dean & Cas‘s chemistry of course, Lucifer, the angels. I just enjoyed it.

Seasons 6-10, Cas betraying the boys, the Leviathans, Sam being soulless, Purgatory, Benny, Dean having a Crisis every other episode, Charlie, Metatron, Rowena, Alex, Donna being introduced, Claire being reintroduced, Crowley, the Mark of Cain- all examples of concepts & characters I adore. There is a distinct change after Season 5 was over, in Dean and Cas’s characters especially. Probably because it was supposed to end after S5? Whatever, I really enjoyed that. It was fun.

Season 11-12, I don’t remember much? I think it was the Amara/Darkness & Men of Letters Arc thing? The concept of the Darkness was nice. God, Lucifer and the whole squad teaming up to get rid of her was kinda cool I guess? Ketch was… I don’t know a little weird at first but I got used to him? Never grew overly fond of Mary’s character. Jack‘s birth of course was… something. Over all neutral ig. I don’t know why this is distinct for me, but I feel like something changed after 10 was over, can’t put my finger on it though.

Season 13-14, I’m currently watching 14, I think the whole parenting thing with Jack they‘ve got going on is nice. I‘m currently enjoying the whole Micheal trying to destroy the earth & possessing Dean arc and whatever the hell is going on with Nick. Gabriel coming back in 13 and the girl squad with Donna, Jody and the kids feeling more… prominent (?) was fun. What changed here is probably conditioned by Jack being added as a character. I like him, but it kinda changed the dynamic I guess? Also because it kinda conditioned everything that happened afterwards.

Season 15, I haven’t watched it yet. From what it looks like Dean’s character gets ruder than I‘m used to? Especially to Cas? Then there‘s the Destiel confession (that I naturally know about) and the weird way Dean dies in the end. Even though I haven’t seen it yet it already kinda feels like they were hastily trying to rip the whole thing off kind of abruptly? Correct me if I’m wrong. I‘ll report back when I watched it, currently I’m rewatching in German (currently S6) with my mother who hasn’t seen the show yet.

I don’t know what this is supposed to be? I think I just wanted to rant about this whole section thing in my mind and how/why I like said said sections. Maybe also for me to write it down and make up my mind about this stuff, because as I’m rewatching the show I’m reflecting and thinking about stuff a little bit more.

Angelic hedonism, angelic asceticism: Anna and Hannah

Anna and Hannah are a study of two opposites.

Anna + dissociating from angel-ness (angelic brutality)

Anna is THE poster child-angel for complete dissociation and non-integration of the angelic self.

"Angels don't feel ANYTHING, so 'being a human' is the only WAY forward; the angel part MUST be torn out."

Interestingly, it's a self-defeating argument. If Anna felt nothing, she'd have never wanted to tear out her grace in the first place. She's horrified by the brutality of angelic instinct.

However, she takes her grace on when people need to be protected! It's very tied up with hyper-masculine-soldier concepts of war, duty, and emotion. Anna walks the path of hedonism but reaches for duty when lives are on the line.

Even when she returns to angelicity, she wants to be connected to her emotions and experience of being human. Subconsciously, she wants to be integrated. She "pulls a few favors" to inhabit the human shape she connected with and that helped her move through the world and understand her emotions and meaning-making.

She was just beginning to balance her sense of past and present when the authoritarian force crushed her progress.

Hannah + dissociating from human-ness (angelic emotion)

In season 10, Hannah quickly realizes angels CAN feel things but decides that they really, really shouldn't. She pushes down these emotions (art, love, poetry) and elevates Caroline's above her own.

Although it's wonderfully altruistic, it's also so interesting how Hannah downplays her own emotions in the process. "These emotions aren't for us." Hannah's emotions, in essence, "don't count." Maybe she even rationalized that her feelings for a fellow soldier were just a side effect of inhabiting a body. Hannah reaches for complete dissociation and non-integration of the "human" self, which is really just how she chooses to label angelic emotion. If angels aren't allowed to be emotional, then it's something that has to be characterized as 'human' instead.

"Angels feel SOMETHING, but it pales in comparison to human emotions, so maybe it doesn't count; the human part MUST be abandoned for the greater good."

Hannah swears off 'human' things in order to be her idea of ALL ANGEL, and yet she struggles to do that, even when she participates in the torture of Cas in season 11. Hannah walks the path of asceticism, and it ends for her almost as brutally as it began.

Very few angels decide to integrate the angelic self with the concept of "human" emotion. It's why I'll always love Meredith's Good Intentions script. It GETS it.

I think it's so interesting, because season 10 sees Cas tentatively describing himself not as "A" human, but like "LIKE" a human. Then, seasons 11-13 see Cas letting his angel nature shine through. Eventually, he even stops pretending to be nice on cases! We see a return to growly-off-putting Cas. "You think this is funny?" "No, sir."

In trying to integrate his concept of self, he allows himself to showcase his baseline instincts as an angel instead. We stop seeing him grooming and worrying over his appearance in order to "appear more harmless/human." He still shows an interest in human culture and his practice of language (metaphors & sayings), but it feels more comfortable.

I think late season 14 and 15 showcases Cas being more levelheaded in assessing how humans aren't a monolith...and how angels aren't either. He makes great strides (and some backwards progress). Really lovely stuff!

i have such strong memories related to black sails like. it was my mom's birthday. during a weekend. think 2018/2019. we went away for the weekend to this. place. idk what its called in english but yk rent a tiny house for like a few days. whatever. i can remember what it looked like. i sat on that couch watching black sails. my sister and i had to share a room and i managed to break the bed (not permanently) i had to sleep on & because even after fixing it i didnt trust it, i slept on the floor. it was on that floor that i watched s2 of black sails. it was on that floor that i saw that fucking scene that fundamentally changed me as a person. because. listen. black sails was one of the first shows id watched with a queer story. with not one but two major plot threads revolving around queer people's relationships. i remember sitting in the car in the dark as the rest of my family was ordering fries for us and i remember my mom going "hey look gay couple!" in a restaurant. it doesnt feel real. that entire weekend is a fever dream. i thought i was just watching a pirate show. the pirates were gay. the pirates were fucking gay bro. i cried over that show. i wept at the end of it. i had to play boardgames for my mom's birthday and pretend like i wasnt going insane because the pirates were gay and i was just. ough. i was 14 or 15 and i was barely out and i was new to being queer in any capacity and it was such an experience.

And their bodies were brought to the same place that all the other dead people were at right (cuz somehow the cops never found lobotomy man's victims?) So wtf is this town's theory on who murdered them bc how would a copycat killer know where the original bodies are at if seemingly no one else could find them

Judging SPN Seasons By How Messy It Would Be If Sam And Dean Started Having Sex

Season 1: freshly reunited. no one else in their world but them. they are obsessed with each other. they would fuck like feral dogs and it would make them so much worse. also dad is there. unspeakably messy. 12/10

Season 2: dad just died. the grief sex would be more tears than come and at least one of them is probably saying johns name mid fuck. dean might have to kill baby brother (TM) and so the obvious reaction to this would be extremely possessive sex. sam would not like that attitude (with the one exception of if it happens when hes drunk in playthings). messy in even grosser but marginally less feral ways than szn one. 13/10

Season 3: milder. still obsessed with each other but more settled into it now. deans turn to maybe die and sams turn to be uber-doober possessive about it. unlike sam, dean would be extremely into that. and his deal is comin due so he might as well. sad and tragic,, but not that messy. probably still more tears than come. 6/10

Season 4: dean just came back from hell to find sam fucking his new demon girlfriend. the angels are there. they're still hunting but Stuff Is Going On and god knows they need to be grounded with each other to make it through. sex would probably help. would do the opposite than make things messier. would be vicious. definite chance dean might try to feed sam his blood. 4/10

Season 5: apocalypse fuck. oh fuck. ruby is dead. angels and death and demons and god and destiny. sam and dean are the most experienced and secure theyve ever been and yet. the whole damn world is about to explode. and yet they are still tortured and annoyed by the goofy everday hunting horrors. fucking would be nice for them, would remind them they belong to each other. they think theyre gonna die so the consequences wouldnt matter a whole lot. less insulated and worried about holy judgment so the incest thing may be a bother now. 2/10

Season 7: stranded up the creek without even a twig for a paddle. both brothers are destroyed and traumatised and forcing each other forward by force of necessity and a brotherly hand on the back of the neck. at least its just them alone together (dean please ignore the hallucination of lucifer sitting in the corner and judging our cock size-). sex would go terribly and be the most unsexy sex ever sexed. but they would probably like the closeness if sam could handle it. messy but wouldnt ruin them long term. there would be a terrible Dick joke. 8/10

Season 9: less than ideal with sam possessed by and angel. dean is rocking with the guilt and confliction. the mark of cain is also making him a bit feral again. theyre safe together in the bunker but thats already claustrophobic enough sex might just suffocate them both. pretty messy. 7/10

Season 10: your big brother is an angry angry man but its not his fault right??? its because of the mark right?? he cant control it and you love him and you want to stay in the safe house/bunker/tomb with him you dont want to leave anymore and you need him. youve both been through enough. you deserve this. there would be minimal messiness caused by sex with your brother rn. exception to those few weeks where he was a demon. 2/10

Season 11: gods sister is here and its the apocalypse again. dean hates what he has with Her. at least his sammy is here. at least theyre together. still crazy about each other. gay incest sex is the most reasonable reaction. god might find out- but then again, he and his sister are pretty wacked out together too, and are we not made in gods image?. 1/10

Season 12: Mom is here and so is lucifer and his kid and also the cunt ass brits. not ideal. minimal messiness so long as no one finds out. and fuck all them anyway its pretty clear sam and dean can only ever really trust each other. sex would be affirming and safe here. they are absolutely fucking in the kitchen to the smell of toast and coffee. dean discovers he has an std because no its not normal that your balls have iched like that for the past four years you need to go to a doctor and dean i swear on the impala if you gave it to me- . 3/10
