Reposted from @manubennett Saddened by the passing of Ioane (John) King who played the role of Rhaskos on Spartacus. John had a long battle with cancer but faced that fight with dignity & a constant resolve not to be defeated. On Spartacus John was hired as an extra but with a powerful presence & ever positive attitude amongst the cast & crew, won himself the speaking role of Rhaskos. Fans may remember Rhaskos leading the song “My cock rages on!” a defiant tune sung by gladiators after surviving the games. I remember John most fondly for his huge grin & sparkle in his eye when he would welcome me & others onto set each day offering the Gladiatorial forearm handshake & acknowledging in his deep raspy voice, “Brother!” He was one of the boys who held the team together & wore the B brand for the House Of Batiatus upon his forearm with so much pride. but the way both sparty and varro look at batiatus when numerius passes judgment. this man is in charge of, and holds both their lives in his hands. and at this point both of them think they are worth something. certainly batiatus wont sacrifice varro for the amusement of a child. and the shift from hopeful desperation of ‘he wont give the kid what he wants’ to complete disbelief in both their faces when batiatus says to proceed.

What are your queer headcanons for Spartacus characters? I'm curious 👀

Some of these are based on stuff in canon, others are just me thinkin' my thoughts. They're also for characters who aren't explicitly shown to be queer, such as Nasir, Agron, Saxa, Lucretia, and so on.

Spartacus is bi or pan. He was absolutely in love with Varro, and I think he also had a thing for Crixus and Nasir (Granted, I think everyone had a thing for Nasir and it's only because Agron made a move first that he didn't have half the camp vying for his affections.) The scene in Fugitvus where he and Aurelia are talking about what made them love Varro- "A lop-sided grin, eyes promising mischief."

"I fell to love the crooked bend of Varro's lips, long before the man himself."

"As did I."

Like, what about that doesn't scream being in love?

Also, fun fact, before Liam McIntyre took the role, Wentworth Miller was being considered for Spartacus, and I am going to daydream about that forfuckingever while sending Steven DeKnight mental messages to cast him in the new series that's supposed to be coming up.

Crixus is demi. He says that he's not interested in sex when he first joined the ludus, and it's only when he falls for Naevia that he's shown being attracted to anyone. And when Naevia finds herself sex repulsed, he's cool with their relationship not being physical. I know this isn't strictly an ace thing but I still love it.

Gannicus is one that I can't decide exactly. I firmly believe that he and Oenomaeus were in love with each other as much as they were with Melitta. The running theme throughout the show of characters talking of being reunited with their loves in the afterlife, then having Oenomaeus being there waiting patiently for Gannicus when he dies is amazing, I can't lie.

Lugo was one of the dozen or so men who probably would have enjoyed a bit of bed warming from Nasir. They're both so flirty with each other as time goes on. He strikes me as being 'Pretty women? Yeah! Pretty men? Yeah! Pretty individual who is neither man nor woman? Yeah! Lugo love all! Come to my tent, pretty person! Lugo will keep you warm!'

Caesar is.... Well, he's Caesar, so I'm genuinely surprised there weren't any scenes of him fucking his way through the rebellion.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I prefer fluff and smut but I guess Absent Heart (Spartacus)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most of my fics have happy endings, really can't tell. One of the fluffiest might be Five Weddings (CSI)

8. Do you get hate on fics? I've gotten a strange comment about MacDalton being platonic but that was on a piece of art and not an actual fic

9. Do you write smut? Absolutely

10. Do you wrote crossovers? What's the craziest one you've ever written? My Mandy/Jill series (Mandy from CSI and Jill from MacGyver) And I've done that odd little The 100/Spartacus crossover once

13. Have you ever co written a fic? Yes, multiple times and it's always been a blast

15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Well there's the sequel to Savages East of the Rhine, my Spartacus Brothel AU, Duro adopting Varro & Aurelia's kid after they die and a number of Star Trek Discovery wips... and then some 

16. What are your writing strengths? Tough. I think I'm good at getting into a character's POV, making the reader feel like they're right with the character. I also consider myself a fairly decent smut writer. I've been praised for my canon language skills in Spartacus fic, which I pride myself on. Generally dialogue, I always put great effort into making the characters sound in character and close to canon.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? World building, plot, getting from a to b. I tend to visualize scenes but then I need to get the characters there and I often struggle with "greater picture" parts.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I've used some German phrases in a fic where there was a German character. I don't feel comfortable using a language I'm not fluent in (English is already my second language) but if the show has a conlang or a character uses phrases in their native tongue a lot I'll try to incorporate that. Might wanna try to find a native speaker to proof read though.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written? Please don't ask me that, there are so many. I'm probably most proud of Savages East of the Rhine though

The gods favored Spartacus in more ways than glory in the arena. Temptation nearly drove Varro to great boldness, bold enough to reach forth to bite the apple held within the other man's hand but such actions were left in dreams. At the present, the golden hair gladiator reached for an apple of his own but spoke instead of biting into nourishment. "And did you think it lie? Varro meant it; all branded gladiators in House Batiatus believed it so even if it bruised ego. Spartacus brought the rains to Rome and fortune to the ludus. While his friend was lenient with his smiles, Varro smiled wide and bright enough for them both as he bit into the apple. Eyes widened and a moan was produced. No time was wasted to take another bite and another. After chewing and swallowing, "I wonder what other desires and commands they will meet of yours. Short of freedom, if you asked for your cock to be dipped in gold, they would melt the cock themselves. but i think there’s a very clear difference the bond of brotherhood vs friendship. and the relationship between crixus and spartacus has always been tense right from the start pretty much all the way to the end. like they did not like each other at all at the start and that never really went away. but they are within that brotherhood of gladiators. and crixus says something along those lines when he saved sparty, despite like 5 mins before the two were all but going for each other’s throats, you’re a gladiator, you deserve a glorious death upon the sands or something of the like, i don’t remember the actual quote. and obviously there’s the growth of mutual respect and crixus does realize the way to freedom is through spartacus, and they do comes see each other as allies rather than rivals but they are constantly butting heads, all the time.  but they are also motivated by very different things. but you don’t really see those same moments of connection (beyond conversation involving naevia) like you see with agron and varro or even gannicus. they see themselves as brothers, as friends but they’re never close
