In 1 Samuel 15:2-3, God commands Saul, the first king of Israel, to attack and destroy the Amalekites. This command is given as a punishment for the Amalekites' previous actions against the Israelites. The Amalekites had waylaid the Israelites as they were journeying from Egypt to the Promised Land, attacking them from behind and targeting the weak and vulnerable members of their community.
