The Vegetable Stone (Atropa belladonna) 💚 a powerful alchemical preparation and materia magica. The plant material is separated into mercury, sulfur and salt. It is then exposed to the four elements through alchemical process. This is a rudimentary vegetable stone treated with elemental fluid condensers. The stone is a kind of homunculi that can be added to other formulas to increase their potency such as liquid plant spirit familiar vessels. If you could interview/pick the brain of Dr. Sledge but could only get 3 general questions, what would you ask?
Man this was an evil thought experiment
1. I've already cited his thesis work on Dee a few times. But I wanna ask him his opinions on what type of person Dee was. I want to know his takes on Dee's mindset.
2. I want to know his takes on the spagyric theory of proto-alchemy. Like, I want to know if he thinks there was any continuity between late ancient greek botanical/glass-blowing practices and Islamic alchemy. (It's a theory is subscribe to but I want his thoughts)
3. I want his thoughts on how Pythagorean/platonist esoterica affected the development of Kabbalah. Like, it's pretty clear they're related but how did we get from Plotinus to Luria? It's gotta be something to do with Umayyad Spain right? I don't know nearly enough about the Islamicate element of that period to even know where to start.

Three Part Harmony (15/?)
“She should have been back by now,” Mulder said, pacing back and forth in front of the large windows that faced the front of the cabin. Dusk was already laying long shadows through the evergreens that wreathed the house.
“Maybe she got held up for some reason,” Scully said, a hint of optimism in her voice that neither of them quite felt. “You did warn her against calling.”
William was happily playing on the floor, swarming over Scully’s legs as she sat in front of the fireplace, watching the snow still fall outside. Neither of them had cell phones, an appendage they had each relied on with a little too much dependency before they found themselves on the run.
Earlier in the day, Scully had tried communing with William at Mulder’s urging, but the baby had been too distracted, and she was in her own head about it, not able to concentrate on any one thing herself.
“Do you think we have enough supplies to last us if she doesn’t come back?” Mulder asked.
Truthfully, Scully thought probably not–what William needed tended to far surpass what they themselves could get by on–but there was no reason to further work up Mulder, who was already agitated.
“We’ll be fine for a few days,” she said. “Let’s give Rhonda some time. Skinner’s out there with a whole team looking for us. If she needs to lay low, she needs to lay low.”
Mulder grunted unhappily. He was not a man who was good at staying still.
XxXxXxXxXxX
Bryson had yet to check in with him, and Skinner tried not to worry about why that might be.
“Let’s get started,” he said, popping two antacids and pulling the little conference room chair up to the table. “What do we have this morning?”
Kolinsky spoke first. “I followed up on the truck registration. Not much there,” he sighed. “It’s been sold or bartered five or six times since the last time the paperwork on it got run through a government entity. Last record I could find on it was from a guy by the name of Gold in Louisiana in 1987. The guy’s been dead for ten years.”
Skinner nodded. Several other agents spoke to leads they’d followed up on that hadn’t turned to anything.
Kent piped in next.
“I went to the veterinary clinic Bryson was so hot on,” he said. “Was hit a few nights ago. Ketamine was stolen from a locked drug box. Smash and grab.”
“And?” Skinner said. “Do we think it actually was a smash and grab?”
Kent sighed. “It’s what it looks like to me.”
“If Bryson has his panties in a wad about it, let him follow up,” said Eugene, who had not liked Bryson from the get go.
Skinner had tried to assemble a team of agents who were good judges of character. He didn’t need anyone on the team who was quick to judge or, god forbid, held a grudge against Mulder for pissing in his Wheaties back in VICAP.
People tended to not like the two X-Files agents, but Skinner could see it from both sides. Mulder had a reputation for brilliance, and jealousy amongst the other agents of the bureau — an overachieving lot, prone to boastful gamesmanship — didn’t take kindly to his confident, untouchable mien. And then there was Scully, who often came off prickly and cold, the two of them off in their own small department, heads always bent together, an impenetrable microcosm no one could touch. Of course there were rumors, which only seemed to pull them closer and raise Scully’s hackles more. Skinner was one of the few people who knew the true extent of what they’d been through together, and his respect for their endurance was only surpassed by his admiration for the respect they showed one another; they were a team in the truest sense of the word, there was no leader, neither trying to take the wheel and steer. That they loved each other was clear to anyone who bothered to look, and despite the water cooler talk, he suspected that their sexual relationship took years to inaugurate, and that it was merely a spagyrical byproduct of their bond, the genesis of which spoke to a kind of chemistry you couldn’t create in a lab.
If Skinner’s team did catch up with the erstwhile agents, he wanted cool, calm heads. Bryson was decidedly not that. And the longer the agent went without checking in, the more Skinner’s stomach roiled. He felt like Lando Calrissian at the end of ‘Empire.’ This deal’s getting worse all the time.

Another made-up NPC in my Nehrim fic, Brother Noriel. Half-Aeterna, who, might be a very unpleasant person at first glance, he has a great heart under the surface. He was Azuriel's tutor in Tirin Abbey - when she was assigned as his assistant some weeks after her arrival. (Every novice was assigned to help in the work around the abbey, and usually* to the work that they showed most affinity in.) Noriel introduced her into herbalism and alchemy, and although the leadership of the Abbey strictly insisted on training certain novices to become apothecaries, Brother Noriel was nice enough to show Azuriel some other, forbidden (that is, forbidden since Barateon rules the Middlerealm...) practices, such as transmutation, little metallurgy and advanced spagyrics. Btw, forgot to mention a 'not so fun' fact: This character is based on one of my favourite teacher from my chemical lab technician school who sadly passed away in 2015. (* obviously the novices do their share in every type of work too on a daily basis, from cleaning to harvesting... The list is endless :D)

Hi. My real name is Sara. I became a Dean Stockwell fan back on the 2nd anniversary of Dean's passing (Nov. 7, 2023). I fell in love with Dean's artwork after accidentally Googling it and immediately purchased his autographed copy of "The Spagyric Eye" from Austin Stockwell on eBay. Dean's collages are beautiful and are a lot to take in. When my family and I went to a local thrift store, I found the Fedora-knockoff in the picture for $4.99 and immediately snatched it. It reminded me so much of Dean that I had to buy it.

WOL profile: Asel Kha
Tumblr media
Name: Asel Kha
Possible Azem names: Pandora or Charon
Age: 28
Gender: Female [She/Her]
Race: Xaela Aura
Class: Scholar [Main], Summoner, Ninja [Post ARR Patches, at Yugiri's suggestion. Figures it a good backup to her magic], Bard [Post SB. Influenced by time at the Azim Steppe.] and Warrior [Post ShB, In memorial of Ardbert.]/ Omni Crafter and Omni Gatherer. [Hates fishing, but she'll do it.]
Height: 5'2"
Orientation: Disaster Bi-romantic Asexual, leaning towards women. [open to queer-platonic pairings.]
Crushes: Minfilia, Y'shtola, Lyse, Sanson [briefly] and, Mide [also briefly].
Potential Pairings: Y'shtola or Lyse
Potential QPR: Estinien, Y'shtola, and/or G'raha
Idolizes: Y'shtola [Since she first met her in Limsa Lominsa], Cid, and Baderon Tenfingers [She once accidentally called him dad].
Personality: Tends to struggle with reading people, situations, and moods; Asel has a habit of withdrawing into herself if she cannot find what she feels is an appropriate response to a situation. This is rarely helped by her tendency to overthink things. She slowly gets better during her time in Eorzea and The First. In fact, there are points in the later expansion packs where she is too honest. Usually when she's angry.
Adaptable [by necessity] and excitable [despite herself]; Asel will speak more if she's comfortable in either her location or company. This can seem inconsistent as she has memory problems when it comes to names and faces. Has a considerable amount of patience and tries to present a friendly face to those she helps despite her nerves. Asel is easily flustered and doesn't like being the center of attention. Her fame makes her jittery and anxious.
Hobbies: Loves to learn new things. Is usually drawn to folklore, mythology and fairy tales which is probably what influenced her to take up the mantle of bard. She takes to practicing the flute by some point in the SB patches, though only in private. She has stage fright and tends to freeze up.
Asel also loves to travel and explore new places. That being said, she wasn't exactly blessed by the Navigator. The aether compass Haurchefaunt gave her sees a lot of use because of this as it has a compass. Actually enjoys helping others and is unbothered by all the fetch quests she gets sent on. Prefers crafting to fighting, and wishes to make things for her friends. So far shes only gotten to make a hammer for Cid back when she first met him.
Unique animations: Rubs her eyes against her sleeve to prevent people from seeing her crying. Tends to default to crossing her arms across her chest.
Commonly found: The Great Gubal library, as soon as she learns of it. Asel starts making journeys to the Ziggurat when she learns of it's connection to red mage history from her research. She hopes to find more on the history of their weapons.  She spends her spare time in The First either in the Cabinet of Curiosities or volunteering in the Spagyrics, putting her experience from working at her parent's apothecary to good work.
History:
Left home to see the world and continue her studies.
Daughter of two retired adventurers, her parents met when her father treated her mother for an injury that took the sight in one of her eyes. They opened an apothecary sometime between their marriage and the birth of their child. Asel worked there from twelve to when she left home at twenty-eight.
Has wanted to be an adventurer since she was a child. Her parents, determined to make sure she survived should she follow through with this goal, trained her to the best of their abilities in medicine, survival, and magic. She does know how to swim and is one hundred percent willing to help Alphinaud and Urianger should they ever ask. They probably won't
She started studying advanced aetherology around the beginning of Heavensward. At first it was in order to help in finding her fellow Scions. Asel decides to continue said studies once they are found in an attempt to keep up with them. Or at the very least understand what is being said.
Didn't have any real friends growing up, due to her job at the parent's store taking up a lot of her time, and her focus on her studies to become an adventurer. Her parents tried to help with this by having her do delivery work. Which gave her experience with communication and developing a good poker face but did not address the key issue. She now sees the scions as her family and can be a tad overprotective of those she gets close to.

𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓐𝓵𝓭𝓮𝓷 𝓚𝓲𝓭𝓼 | FBAWTFT
Edward William Alden (b. 1900) ➔ portrayed by Luke Norris
Charming and, generally, good with words, Edward is Abe and Emmie’s eldest son. Predestined to inherit his father's title, he feels society's pressure on his shoulders wherever he goes (even if his parents tried their best to shield their children from it). Edward is responsible and likes to keep the peace between his siblings. Although very proper when needed, he likes to have a good laugh, especially when hanging with his Quidditch friends. He has a clear set of morals and wants to provoke—as he thinks much needed—change by meddling in political affairs. Very much a Gryffindor, like his mother.
Audrey Alden (b. 1902) @endlessly-cursed ➔ portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever
Owen Phineas Alden (b. 1904) ➔ portrayed by Henry Collett
Owen is the second-born son. He's ambitious, very curious and prides himself on his superb academic accomplishments. He even mastered becoming an Animagus (magpie) quite young. Even if Owen likes to think he works hard solely for his own peace of mind, if he were to dig deeper, he would have to admit that he strives for good grades to get his parents' attention—a task which, with five siblings, often seems impossible. Although quite intense/emotional, he is kind and loyal and wants to be a Detective or Auror one day. The Sorting hat will definitely have trouble sorting him. He might be a Slytherin, might be a Gryffindor. We'll see.
Livia Annette Alden (b. 1906) ➔ portrayed by Billie Piper
Livia is a strong-headed and opinionated Hufflepuff. Like her brothers, she follows a strong moral code and strives to help others which, ultimately, prompts her to become a healer—her knack for Herbology and Spagyric proving to come in handy. Although quite mature and calm, she can be a bit of a rebel, in that she often wants to do things her own way and prefers a quiet, uncomplicated life over the parties and intrigues of court. Though she has to admit, she likes pretty things.
Theresa Lorraine Alden (b. 1908) @endlessly-cursed ➔ portrayed by Rachel Skarsten
Flora Annabelle Alden (b. 1910) ➔ portrayed by Haley Bennett
Flora is the youngest of the bunch and really is her father's daughter, as she likes to question everything and even ended up in Ravenclaw, just like him. Although, more on the quiet side, you will find a sharp tongue when provoked and a generally low tolerance for ignorance. Despite being a free spirit, Flora prefers, most of all, to be among flowers, music and books and likes to practise and learn about all sorts of charmwork in quiet solitude. Regardless of her own capability, she often gets babied by her siblings.

i’m subscribed to this alchemist dude on youtube for fun and he talks about “spagyrics”, are the modern ideas about alchemical spagyrics accurate to anything in ye olde alchemical traditions?
Oh good question!
So Spagyry as a term is largely synonymous with the term alchemy, but it's also occasionally used to refer to a sort of ancient Greek proto-alchemy. Most of the references we have about spagygry come from things like the Islamic world, so they're separated by a pretty significant amount of time, and the texts that reference it are things like "a partial reprint of a reprint that was translated from classical Greek to Arabic and then to Latin and then to English. And could also just have been made up by an Islamic scholar."
That said, this conception of a practice that is sorta "ancient Greek material science related to glassblowing + magico-religious ideas around pharmakides." Would be a completely reasonable thing to exist in the ancient Greek world, even if it was being mythologized by later alchemists.
Like, for example, there's a passage in Fulcanelli where he recounts a story from a French alchemist in the 1700s who was captured at sea by corsairs and sold into slavery to a noble Turkish alchemist in Istanbul who taught the Frenchman ancient techniques he learned from spagyry.
Fulcanelli lies all the time and I haven't been able to find any evidence of the story being real, but it serves to illustrate the place that Spagyry has in alchemical legendary history.

FFXIVWrite 2023 Prompt 25: Call it a Day
Takes place in Shadowbringers between the second and third lightwardens. Cynthia tries to help the people of the Crystarium with some deliveries, which Emet-Selch finds incredibly boring and not worth her time.
Cynthia practically dashes around the Crystarium, carrying bags and boxes that need to be delivered here or there.
“Ah, is Hydaelyn’s chosen being reduced to errand girl again?” She hears as she runs into the Wandering Stairs. Confused, she turns around to see Emet-Selch practically lounging at one of the tables, with a glass of wine in his hands.
Pausing, she furrows her brows. “What… are you doing here?”
He rolls his eyes and sighs, as if giving an explanation is incredibly taxing. “What does it look like? I’m relaxing, something you never seem to do.”
“I don’t need to relax. In fact, I don’t like having nothing to do.” While she was standing there, one of the workers walked up to her, offering to take the boxes meant for Glynard. She turns to thank them and hand over a couple boxes, before turning back to Emet-Selch. “And with that being said, I have a few more things to do before it gets dark.” And she starts to leave.
“Ah, just one moment.”
Sighing, she turns around again. “Yes? I know you don’t have anything to do besides plot and scheme, but I do.”
“Where do the rest of those need to go?” He asks, using the hand holding his wine glass to gesture at the rest of the bags and boxes on her person.
“Uh, these are going to the Spagyrics, these are going to the Hortorium, and these are going to the Crystarium Guard stationed right outside the Crystarium. Why?”
Giving her his usual lopsided grin, he raises his free hand and snaps… and everything she was carrying is gone. He must see the flash of panic in her eyes before he can hide it, because he rolls his eyes. “I didn’t destroy them, I simply sent them to the correct places. Calm down, hero.”
“But… why?” Crossing her arms, she eyes him warily. “Even considering whatever you’re scheming that means you aren’t trying to stop me from killing the lightwardens, there’s no reason for you to help me with some mundane tasks.”
“Easy. I couldn’t stand seeing you doing something so boring. Call it a day, hero, you need to save your energy for the next three lightwardens.”
She rolls her eyes and walks away, shaking her head. “Whatever. I’ll just find something else to do until I’m tired.”
