Some Ness focused headcanons cause me and the SecurityWaiter/DreamTheory Discord server have been COOKING (projecting onto him)
Heavily surrounding my headcanon that he is southern
-Ness is southern (specifically Texan cause I’m Texan and that’s what I know)
-he doesn’t have a very thick accent, but saying certain words or phrases, being extra angry/excited/etc., speaking in a lower or lazier voice (like morning voiceee 👀👀👀), being around other people with thicker acccents, etc. will trigger his accent to thicken up (again more projecting this is just me core LMAO)
-he has absolutely worked at a Cracker Barrel. Has gotten all the stars on his apron, is absolute god tier at that peg game, steals the biscuits, the whole package
-southern charm king, brags abt it
-knows so much Texas trivia, like our state things (tree, bird, mammal, etc.), history, tourist junk, etc.
-has a Texas flag pin that he puts on his bag and apron
-genuinely tweaks when someone pronounces pecan like “pea-can” (I know both pronunciations are common in the south but where I’ve grown up/with all the people around me, it’s always be “Puh-con” NOT “pea-can”)
-makes great pie 🤗🤗🤗
-dr pepper + Diet Coke addict
-“wdym you don’t know the story of the Alamo…” “what do you mean you’ve never had what-a-burger…” “what do you mean you’ve never been to the dr. Pepper museum…” etc. /hj
-likes country music 💔💔💔
-I mentioned before theyre a swifty…loves her country era…
-LOVES SQUARE DANCING !!
-has fun cowboy boots and cowboy hats cause I say so
-loves the rodeo
-god I am just making them a stereotype I CANT HELP IT THIS IS MY HOME 💔💔💔 DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS 💔💔💔
-“oh no, Texas sucks…but if anyone SAYS Texas sucks-“ becomes Texas #1 defender
-GOD I CAN SEE HIM WORKING AT SEA WORLD TOO. HED DO THE SEA LION SHOWS I KNOW IT 💥💥💥
-Mike makes fun of them for being southern but then they just exaggerate it to annoy him
-BEGS MIKE TO GO WITH HIM TO THE RODEO ONE DAY PLEASSEEE (Mike will NEVER agree…unless-)
-takes Mike and Abby to the San Antonio river walk and Abby absolutely loves the rainforest cafe. Mike genuinely despises it so much like he sits there plotting Ness’ murder the whole time
-scratch the dad thing my mom suggested that Ness’ aunt and uncle run the diner and that actually works better with some of my headcanons so yeah
-Sparky’s is still named after a family dog though
-always points out farm animals when driving
K that’s it for now love them sm 🫶🫶🫶

it honestly makes me pretty emotional when i think about how comfortable i am with my sexuality because like as someone who grew up with a mom who has highly unproductive, southern baptist christian ideologies, the luxury of comfortably embracing my sexuality was never afforded to me growing up. even in high school, i was really sneaky about it. i’ve listened to my mom call my sister slurs, i’ve seen her threaten to kick her out many times, and i remember being like 11 and terrified of telling her that i lowkey was in fact looking up “girls kissing” on our half a core processor family desktop. and now it’s just like, when i zoom out of my life, im very blessed to look and see that i’m an independent, extremely gay woman who is able to comfortably kiss girls at parties, talk about lesbian relationships with my friends, plan on going to lesbian bars and gay bars and what may have you, all of it. i can’t even articulate the amount of times i hurt myself growing up trying to convince myself that i liked men, and i liked exposing myself to them and i liked how they made me feel — i felt disgusting, and tbh that really put a damper on how i understood myself, sexually. so on some sappy shit, like, i don’t think i ever truly became myself and got over a lot of that until i kissed another woman. to this day i don’t talk to my mom about my sexuality and really she doesn’t need to know who i’m fucking but she picks up on it and she still tells me that there’s time to repent. and you know what, there probably still is but i think 75+ years worth of pussy and soft touches and smelling a girl’s shampoo when her face is in the crook of my neck after a sexual experience that actually made sense, is worth whatever the hell comes after

Hi, thanks for answering my ask, If it's not too hard can you tell me your race head canons for all the Mercs?
You're the best.
Engie: BLACK. He is not white. no. no don't look at the game. or the comics. or anything else related to engineer tf2. you cannot see that man at night. he's too much of a southern-black-mother-haver to be white. who cares about his dad, his MOM was BLACK. Polite, mildly violent when he needs to be, intelligent? His momma not white you can't change me.
Soldier: Native/Black. Mother Inuit and father African, OG last name Domoraud, got shortened to Doe through Immigration; OG first name was Amaqjuaq, but his parents had to choose a name on the spot. He has many identity issues, don't ask. Never takes off his helmet 'cause he doesn't like his monolids.Very touchy about the subject of race because where he lived was probably nearly as bad as Texas in terms of racism, feels he needs to devote every waking second to America or else he doesn't belong there. Yeah. He needs a bit of help. Has a weird accent but he hides it pretty well. Wow I rambled there...
Spy: Black/asian. Wow I really just dipped Tf2 into charcoal, didn't I? Didn't realize how many of them I Poc-ified until I put it down on paper. His mom was an asian woman, very stern, but she had a soft spot for her gender-weird kid. Dad was a black man, sweetheart, but he wasn't good at caring for people. Mother was a ballet star and taught him, he fucking mastered it. Broke his hip and disabled himself for life, but mastered it. Somehow he dramatizes it even more that it already was, and what actually happened was already halfway out a soap opera.
Sniper: Native. Māroi biological and Aboriginal Aussie Adoptive. He's Native on top of Native. Family spoke Antakarinya at home and he taught himself Māroi. Like Soldier, he has identity issues because languages and cultures get jumbled up in his head sometimes. Hates getting told he can't participate in Aboriginal activities because he isn't actually related to his parents. "BITCH? I WAS RAISED DOING THIS SHIT?" Is very passionate about his culture, especially his Antakarinya, because that is a language two breaths from death.
Scout: Black/white. LIGHTSKIN. CHEERIO-LOOKIN' MOTHERFUCKER. LITTLE E-FUCK-FEMBOY ASS. Soon as he pull out that fried chicken he's in a chick's panties. No explanation because you don't need one.
Pyro: Black. Heavy Nigerian accent, even when their speech isn't muffled people can barely understand them at times. Doesn't have the best english pronunciation, but their voice is jacked up anyways, so it doesn't matter. Fluent in American and British ASL despite this. Big person, bigger heart. 6'7'' 265 LB person with a voice deep enough to hit the Earth's core skipping around in Kidcore Aesthetic™️ and putting stickers on everything.
Demo: Black. we all know buddy. Although I feel like the Scottish are so on a different plane of being that they should be their own race. Black/Scottish. Very smart and has multiple degrees in chemistry and he drinks so much his blood has turned into pure alcohol. Scottish behavior. He wears kilts often, but sadly wears pants under his most times because they're. yknow. on a battle ground. But I think it's a shame. Can you tell I am getting tired.
Medic: I don't fuckin know. German. His race is Germany. The whole country. You ask him his race because his skin is very swarthy so you can't tell whether he's a really tan white guy or a weirdly light black guy. He's a pacific islander/white mix, but he actually barely knows. He'll remember his mother was Polynesian and go Oh. I forgor [Insert skull emoji and a facebook minion meme about mortality}.
Heavy: Black/white mix. He got his mother's beauty marks and his dad's bulkiness. Weird genes, very light but he has very pronounced black facial features. Big nose, big lips, high cheekbones. He gets asked if he's albino more than you would think. People actually don't expect him to have such a heavy Siberian accent because you expect white Vodka twink or white vodka dad that sneezes real fucking hard to have that much of a accent, not the guy that looks like he came out of a Nella Larsen book.
OH MY FUCK I'M DONE.

heyy dude what’s up you don’t have to post this but your discussion of this had me thinking.. as a gay and trans person who would consider myself very religious but in the Jewish way I think this sites obsession w Catholic imagery is really bizarre like I do understand finding things about it compelling or wanting to reclaim imagery but it’s soo weird to me the way nonreligious people choose to engage with it sometimes it’s corny like you said. it’s also so weird to me that catholicism specifically is what’s been chosen as The Aesthetic Religion bc the Catholic Church is soooo antisemitic (on top of many many many other obvious issues) like my family had to leave Europe bc of it. like the Catholic Church has a long bloody history of inciting violence against ppl like me and that Wouldn’t actually change if I was cishet which I think is an interesting distinction between myself and people who want to post gay Catholic imagery stuff. but it’s also like can’t rly complain I think it would be weirder to me if non-religious people engaged with non-christian religions in this way, it would be a really bizarre form of cultural appropriation. the state of being a religious transfag on tumblr in 2023. sorry for rant <3
No need to apologize, I think this is a very important thing to acknowledge! I think the reason why Catholicism is the “aesthetic religion” of choice is largely due to the fact that Christianity in general dominates American culture. So on one hand, I’d say you be hard pressed to find a gay person in the US who hasn’t been impacted by Christian homophobia. & because it’s not uncommon for people to channel their angst with oppression into fascination with or fetishism over a sensitive subject, it’s only natural that so many people would be drawn to do so for Christianity. That said, the aesthetics of many Protestant religions are far more modest than Catholicism, and many Protestant faiths are far less literal with their interpretations of the Bible/biblical rituals and all that. Aside from Catholicism the 2 other faiths I’ve seen be romanticized are fetishized is like… the whole Southern Baptist midwest gothic “Ethel cain core” type thing, and Mormonism, but the only people I’ve seen fetishize the latter are ex Mormons whereas the former seems to have more of a wider appeal.
What you said about that specific oppression resonated with me; though I’m not Jewish myself, I recently learned that my mom & her side of the family are Jewish to some extent… but I was never made aware of this as a kid (despite that side of the family frequently discussing heritage), and I suspect this was due to how Catholic that side of the family is. It’s really fucked up, and I want to ask my grandma what she knows about that, but I’m hesitant to because I fear it would make her or other people in the family treat some family members differently. That dilemma itself definitely has made me uncomfortable with my family’s religious beliefs in a way that’s distinctly different from the discomfort with their homophobia I had prior, so I can only imagine it’s pretty upsetting to see that faith be romanticized when you’re directly and more severely impacted by centuries of Catholic antisemitism. I really appreciate you reaching out & sharing your perspective, apologies if I talked all over the place 👍

So it turns out I completely forgot to take any pictures of my last sewing project. Oops. In fairness, it's a gift for my mother, whose birthday is tomorrow, and I didn't want to post any pictures until after it had arrived at her house and been opened. But I still meant to take some pictures, if not of the process at least of the final product. It wasn't until I got home from mailing it that I realized I full on completely forgot to take any photos at all. Oh well. Maybe Mom can snap a picture or two for me since I flat out forgot. Pics of that if/when I actually have them, lol.
But I'm already into my next sewing project, and I've resolved not to make that same mistake again. Which, really, is nearly the same mistake as I made with my fleece dress last month, when I didn't take any pictures at all until all the major seams were sewn. After documenting so much of my sewing throughout 2023, I seem to have completely forgotten all about taking photos of my works-in-progress the last couple of months. I aim to get back on course with this project, though!
The project in question is a hooded wrap sort of thing, made from the black and gray brushed cotton herringbone that I got a bolt of on ebay a couple of weeks back. After washing the bolt, it looks to be about 43" wide and roughly eight and a half yards long. I want to make an overdress for my fleece dress out of it too, but I think this wrap project will only take up about a yard and a half, maybe two, so I should have plenty left for an overdress. And then I can wear the wrap and the overdress together, potentially.
But really the thing I'm sewing this for is my birthday, which is coming up in about seven weeks. I have somehow talked Jack into going to Disneyland and spending all day in the Star Wars Galaxy's Edge area so I can pilot the Millennium Falcon as many times as possible, and doing some original costuming "Batuu-bounding" while we're there, too. Because I am nothing if not a costume nerd, and my life-long love for Star Wars has recently been reignited, so what better way to spend my birthday than dressed up in one of the best examples of 360 degree set building that I've ever seen.
After combining a bunch of pieces from my closet and my costume boxes, I've come up with an outfit that I like the look of, for a general purpose Force-sensitive smuggler pilot: my every-day tall Doc Martens with wraps over them, leather-look leggings, the vest from my Moment cosplay, and various accessories from my pirate-core and Wasteland days. I may need a better shirt to go with it, but I'm hoping to hit up Goodwill at least once or twice between now and then and see what I can find. The final choice will depend on a bit on the weather that week, which in late February in southern California can be literally anything from the cusp of freezing to 80 degrees, sunny or rainy or windy or some combination of all of them. I won't really know until the weekend beforehand.
Besides a shirt, the last piece I really want to add is this hooded wrap, both for practicality -- warmth in the morning and the evening, and keeping the sun off my head at midday without messing up my hair too much -- and for just the drama of a big hood and drapey wrap. I based the hood pattern on the hooded Vuvalini jacket I made for Wasteland Weekend way back in 2016, but took it in a bit both in width and depth (since I'm not trying to catch the wind with this one, and won't be wearing a fluffy scarf with it).
Over the weekend I drafted a pattern and made a mock-up, but the mock-up is really kinda ugly, since I used left over fabric and made a part of it significantly smaller just to save on fabric, so it's one of those mock-ups where you have to squint and imagine what the final product will look like. Not going to bother taking pictures of that. But it did serve the purpose of clarifying some design elements and finalizing fit, so still worthwhile.
With the hood pattern drafted and tested, and measurements for the long wrap bits figured out, I went ahead and cut it out of the herringbone fabric. Here it is all cut out, three pieces for the hood and two pieces for the back:
Tumblr media
I'm doing french seams on this project, both to combat the fabric's tendency to fray, and to keep all the inner seams looking pretty when the hood is down, etc. Tonight I sewed up the first set of seams on the center back of the wrap, and all three hood pieces (as modeled by my sewing ham):
Tumblr media
Tomorrow I'll press those narrow seams flat, and then sew each of them again a bit further in to completely encase the raw edges (ie a classic french seam). Next step after that will be attaching the hood to the right angle formed by the wrap pieces coming together in the center back. I did this, with shorter and narrower pieces, in my mock-up, and it's a little bit fiddly but not too bad. I didn't french seam the mock-up though, so we'll see if that adds any headaches to this.
Once both stages of the neck seam are done and the hood is attached, the last step will be hemming! And it's a lot of hemming, lol. The shorter edges of the wrap (starting from the top of the center back, where it meets the hood) are each 48" long and 18" wide. I actually haven't measured the outer, longer edge, nor done the math to figure out what it must be given that the center back is cut on a 45 degree bias, but let's just say it's a lot of inches. And then there's the hood opening too, which was cut to have a generous drape. Many many inches of hemming, really probably better measured in yards.
I need to play around with a couple of options, see if I like the look of top stitching or if I want to do the whole thing by hand with invisible stitches, but right now my assumption is that I'll end up doing this by hand. I actually enjoy handsewing hems, so that's not the worst thing in the world, and I've got plenty of time to get this finished before I plan to wear it at the end of February. I do have at least one other sewing project I'd like to tackle for our Star Wars Batuu-bounding day, and I'd like to leave room for other things to come up at the last minute too, so I'm going to keep buzzing through this just as quickly as I can. More pictures tomorrow, in all likelihood.
After I call my mom of course, and wish her a happy birthday. And beg her for photos of that thing I made for her, lol.

Another Italian American man here, can confirm. Grandma Bobbi is the core of the family, and all of us men are absolutely in love with her cooking
Oh to have an italian grandmother that cooks like an angel...
My italian grandmother went insane and disappeared to have a second family that she named all the kids the same in and never surfaced to her original family after that🤦 My grandpa remarried to a very nice midwestern lady and now we have an italian family of men who think they can cook like italians but were never taught the DELICATE BALANCE of seasoning their meat. The amount of times I've eaten spaghetti that was over-poweringly seasoned w cinnamon...........
My mom's German and when she was briefly living in the country she made a lot of cooking friends and learned to cook like a master 😋 it's always smth else when my cinnamon beef father claims my cooking skills come from his "" "Italian genetics" " when it was actually my southern-raised german mother raising me to fear no flavor or failure. I'll eat anything once.

i'm starting to see that some anti rinas are just racists...and that is really vile considering the show aim to be a safe space for young audiences
You’re absolutely right, so much of the hate Gina gets is, at its core, fueled by racism.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a recent development. I’ve been blocking & reporting people (primarily on Twitter — but here, too) for posting incredibly derogatory & racist remarks about Gina (&, by extension, Sofia) since season 1 was airing.
From day one, they’ve called her a bitch or a homewrecker or said she wasn’t good enough for Ricky (gee, I wonder why that is) — then, when 2b rolled around, they switched up, pretended to like her because they no longer saw her as a threat to their white ship (despite the fact that rini was already crumbling for reasons completely unrelated to Gina).
Suddenly, she’s their favorite character…as long as she does exactly what they want her to do & acts exactly the way they want her to act. Meaning, as long as she keeps dating EJ (the character they really care about) and stays sweet & soft, they love her. It’s always conditional.
The second they realized her relationship with EJ wasn’t going to work out, they started to villianize her again. Now EJ’s “the perfect boyfriend” (I lose 3 years off my life every time I see a pw call him that — like, is this perfect boyfriend in the room with us right now?) despite the fact that he treated Gina like a chore all summer, never showed up for her & never put a single ounce of effort into making their relationship work — but, oh, no Gina’s the evil one for even daring to suggest that she deserves better ???
Basically, they want her to sacrifice her own personal needs & wants to stay in a relationship she isn’t happy in for the sake of a guy who barely even gives her the time of day. Okay, cool. So Gina should suffer so that EJ doesn’t have to face his own flaws & insecurities? Got it.
I swear, she expresses literally any normal human emotion and they jump to criticize her for it.
She seeks comfort in her friend (at the time) Ricky because she wants to be around someone who understands what it’s like to have an absentee mom. Oop, she’s trying to “steal” Ricky away from Nini! Oh, & somehow that and Gina dating Ricky now is some kind of betrayal towards Nini? (yes, that is a real take that I’ve actually read). First off, I can promise you Nini does not give a fuck what Ricky does. How many different ways does the show have to tell them that they are done. Over each other. Bones & better off because of it. Nini has not spoken to that man all summer and she’s somewhere in Southern California chilling on a beach with her moms, living her best life. & more importantly, why are they always acting like someone else's happiness is more important than Gina's? Why is she not deserving of the kind of love that she wants and that Ricky can & will give her? I'd love to see pws/rinis try to answer either of those for me. I'm all ears.
Oh, & apparently Gina can’t even kiss the boy she loves without being vilified for it because, the other day, I saw someone say that the Rina kiss “made [them] uncomfortable” & that Gina pulling Ricky in for that second kiss was “aggressive.” (It’s called being passionate, my god — but I think we all know exactly what they really meant by that.)
Ultimately, Gina is the most well-rounded, complex character, played by — hands down — the best actress on the show, if #they don't like her, if they have a problem with her being The Main Girl™ of hsmtmts (if we're being fr, she's always been the main girl to me, but this season made it official) then it's pretty obvious why.

HEAR: Americana Folk Rock | Mipso - “Broken Heart / Open Heart”
Tumblr media
North Carolina based indie-Americana folk quartet Mipso share the contemplative and gentle track "Broken Heart / Open Heart" out everywhere now. The band's propulsive sixth studio album Book of Fools, is due out August 25. The album is now available to pre-order digitally here and on vinyl here. Plus, the band will embark on an extensive tour across North America beginning in Portsmouth, NH on August 17 with tickets on sale now via mipsomusic.com/tour. "Broken Heart / Open Heart" is an earnest processing of grief and display of love and hope amidst loss. "Broken Heart / Open Heart" out today, was built around the idea that a broken heart can become an open heart. On the track, the band builds to a simmering pace, but it never boils over–the intimate vocal is gripping, alongside the muted piano and an overdriven guitar that add grit to the bittersweetness. Mandolinist and vocalist Jacob Sharp and guitarist Joseph Terrell wrote the track together that became a vessel for his processing of the grief that comes in the wake of losing someone you love. Referencing the gut-wrenching opening lyrics, "How do you tell someone you’re lonely, when they’re sitting by your side?" Sharp shares, "I’ve had a couple friends recently who lost a family member for the first time. My mom was sick for a long time - I remember hard times, and I was broken for a while after she passed." Despite the immense pain and heartache Sharp endured, he's able to embrace the brokenness to rebuild himself. Sharp continues, "Now I look back grateful to have been broken enough to have had to decide how to put myself back together. There’s a universal binding in that feeling of realizing you’re broken enough to be wide open - and I think with the right support and love that openness can be a gift. " Book of Fools, the forthcoming sixth studio album by Mipso out August 25, sees the band at their most assured, guided mostly by their own intuition and less impacted by time constraints, expectations or outside forces. Over ten cohesive tracks, driving rhythms, earnest, thoughtful lyricism guide the band back to their roots and who they are at their core. As Terrell puts it, "'Book of Fools' feels more relaxed, more confident, more us – like we’re wearing our favorite clothes and telling our favorite story and it feels exciting again.” There's a fresh, solid confidence and profound understanding of one another that radiates through the music. It's this palpable connection that can only come from this group playing together around the world several hundreds of times and it's here they rediscover their joy and unmatched connection as musicians and as best friends. The previously shared tracks "The Numbers," and "Carolina Rolling By" have captivated fans who are eagerly anticipating the forthcoming project. "Carolina Rolling By" earned the band the cover of Spotify's Roots Rising and number one spot on the playlist, plus placements on Summer Acoustic, Chill Folk, Fresh Folk, Apple's New in Americana, Southern Craft and Amazon's Fresh Folk & Americana. "The Numbers" also appeared on Fresh Folk and New in Americana. "The Numbers" is a rhythmic, wry, finger-wagging observation of the market-obsessed culture that permeates American society. Inspired by NPR's Kai Ryssdal and his signature phrase, "Let’s do the numbers!," the band wonders how tracking the daily economic tea leaves became a veritable religious observance for the ruling class. Fiddler and vocalist Libby Rodenbough recalls hearing an Iowan voter on TV discussing presidential candidates and saying, “I like the incumbent because the stock market’s doing well.” Rodenough says, "I looked around at this cruel place where we live and I felt forlorn that the NASDAQ offers anybody any kind of comfort. How do I know things are bad? Because I feel it, and I see it.” The notion that the success of the stock market had very little to do with the actual lived experiences of everyday people laid the foundation for the groovy, slick "The Numbers." The first taste of the forthcoming project, "Carolina Rolling By" is a relaxed, country-tinged groove that tells the story of a down-and-out pill-popping truck driver trying to get back on his feet. Written in part as a love letter to driving around their home state, Mipso's signature layered, poignant harmonies paint a vibrant portrait of the view out of the driver's window–the deep, clear blue sky with the sun beating down and the crisp air floating by. Terrell says the song came about after a boating accident that led to him needing to take painkillers during recovery. Similar to previous Mipso releases, the track finds beauty in pain and allowed Terrell the space to craft the ode to driving through North Carolina that he's always wanted to make. It was during his recovery that the song materialized. Terrell says with a fresh understanding of the power of pills, "I couldn’t walk for 12 days but I had my grandma’s guitar and some hydrocodone and worked on this song I think because I fully understood for the first time how anyone could get addicted to those." Horror Movies I Just Watched: Feb 2023
A little late, but that’s okay. Also shorter then the last one because I only saw three movies this month.
Tales from the Hood: It was Black History Month and I heard good things, so I figured what the hell.
A Horror anthology made by black people and with social commentary on the mistreatment of black people in America? In this post Get Out world, you can see why it would gain traction, but I’m still shocked this was made as early as 1995! And was still as polished as it was! Granted, Spike Lee was one of the executive producers and presumably, one reason it got greenlit because of the success of the original Candyman. Actually, between that film ,this one, and People Under the Stairs, there actually was some true classic Black Horror films in that decade. What am I even saying?
So this film. Quick thoughts on each section:
Welcome to My Mortuary: On paper, this is a typical wraparound for any horror anthology straight out of any horror anthology; a group of criminals come to meet at an odd place, where a creepy character tells them the stories, only to reveal at the end they’ve been dead this whole time. I’ve seen variations of this older then this movie (Dead of Night, the 70s Tales from the Crypt) and more recent (V/H/S, The Mortuary Collection), though it’s the most 90s I’ve seen based on said criminals this time being gang-bangers. Though the depiction of Hell at the very end reflects everything that kept me away from this movie because that’s what I thought it would be. It was so ridiculously cheap looking! But, upon reflection, given how heavy some of the stories were...
Rogue Cop Revelation: Yeah, one of the big reasons why I think this is still so effective is how little it’s themes have aged. In particular, it’s depiction of police brutality. The saddest thing is, the most unbelievable part of this is not the vengeful ghost, but that these cops would even think about framing their victim for a crime, rather then not bother to hide it and just fall back on qualified immunity.
That Martin would choose revenge to be his last wishes on the world; This man didn’t care about being remembered as a Martyr. And maybe so many other who’ve lost their lives in similar circumstances felt the same. And that still wouldn’t make their deaths justified. You shouldn’t be a perfect victim for it to be unjust.
This was a heavy one to start with, but I’m glad it was. Right out the gate, it’s saying “You think this would be funny because it’s black?. You wanted Black Horror? You‘re getting Black Horror!”
Boys Do Get Bruised: This and the next one are the closest we get to a Voodoo story, even though it’s never mentioned by name here. This one also felt like an expansion of the wraparound story from Creepshow; imaginative son gets back at abusive father with dark magic. David Allen Grier was probably the biggest name in this, especially for being in comedy TV around this time. So him being the abusive stepfather here is a nice shock. Any other story would have Tyrone the son being evil at the end so the teacher and the mom would have to stop him. But given how this was characterized, I liked to think they did...by getting him the therapy and attention he needed. Should be easier with one less monster around.
KKK Comeuppance: Ah, the “evil rich person terrorized by small creatures/ghost” story trope. This time, with a southern twist. Not much to say on this one. It’s not weak, just a classic set up with a unique coat of paint. But I’m beginning to notice a trend where killer dolls in horror might’ve been easier to root for then I though. Between the righteous anger of the one’s here and the charisma of Chucky, I mean. I haven’t seen the Puppet Master movies yet, but form what I heard, it’s similar. Maybe it really is that easy to root for the Little Guy. Ba Dum Tss!
Hard-Core Convert: A Macho Gangster movie that halfway thru turns into Jacob’s Ladder. These descriptions might seem dismissive, sometimes when we’re talking about stories this short, a mashup this simple is more then enough. Though unlike with Jacob, Crazy K doesn’t make any sort of peace in his last moments. Sometimes, we need a reminder redemption only works if the person is willing, no matter how much you traumatize him.
I also figured this would be the best time to mention a recurring theme here that’s interesting; the black characters who caused harm, directly or indirectly, to other black people are seen just as guilty as the racist murdering whites. Each of these stories have that: Clarence letting Martin die because of “loyalty” to other cops, the abusive step-father, Duke Metger’s assistant, Rhodie, helping his image even though he’s an unrepentant racist, and Crazy K getting the approval of a Neo-Nazi. A clearly hateful enemy wouldn’t be nearly as scary without such severe divides in class and racial solidarity working against good people.
Now I get why we ended on the most stagy depiction of Hell ever. We needed a laugh.
Spring: One of two romantic horror movies I saw this month. This one I actually did watch on Valentine’s Day.
Most travel horror make it so you don’t want to go to where it’s set. This one actually seems to set to do the opposite. I might’ve traveled abroad a little sooner if I thought there was a chance I could get a cool chimera girlfriend out of it. And no, the chimera part isn’t close to a dealbreaker. (Okay, they say she isn’t one, but they don’t give an actual name, so you understand).
It starts slow, but it works to its advantage in a way I wished more fish out of water films did. It emphasize just how isolated and far from home our main character made himself be. So even if you don’t know where this town and where his home is on a map, the movie makes them feel far and disconnected.
Honestly, it only feels like a horror movie in the middle, with the scenes where Louise is changing and has to kill animals/would be rapists. Weirdly enough, the scene where Evan finds her changing is when it stops all monster movie business and becomes a romantic meditation on living for so long, the use of religion, and wondering what scientifically constitutes as love. It’s in fact too talky, especially when it feels like the pseudoscience is getting in the way of the romance. Now that might seem the point, but maybe I don’t like the idea that science gets in the way of love.
There have been plenty of vampire movies that got this introspective without falling back on too much bloodshed, so it’s nice to see another monster get the treatment. Especially showing she’s not beyond hope in it’s very sweet final scene. I’m just saying, I came for either Horror or Romance, not a science lesson on a magical creature. Also, I needed more scenes on that farm.
After Midnight: Now the other one. Thought this might be similar to the other one where the guy realized he fell in love with an actual monster, but no. She’s not the monster, and it has nothing to do with her. Hell, they even joked about it late in the movie.
Without that, I suppose the monster instead symbolize something wrong with him. Maybe his fear of the world outside of his hometown. Whatever he felt that “took” his girl from him.
This is another case where I feel this leaned more in the romantic side then horror, which isn’t really my preference. I prefer a balance.
Though the last scene doesn’t really help. The monster’s practically forgotten about, it’s a brightly lit party, Hanks singing a romantic song. And then boom! It’s there. It’s weird because even after it shows up, the scene has a whole different feel from the other parts of the movie where’s it terrorizing him. In those, it’s atmospheric horror. But here, it’s like they’re invaded by a Muppet.
Again, an odd style but I think I get what they’re going for. Once she came back and set the record straight, and he decided to change his mind and do right by her, Hank got a new perspective on his symbolic problem. It can be overcome. That he was able to finally handle it when his literal support network is there in the room with him can’t be a coincidence either.
I guess these two compliment each other in a weird way. On one hand, sometime you need the right frame of mind to open your arms to someone who seem very different and with a lot of baggage. And on the other hand, when you have the baggage, you have to try not to make it an excuse not to reach out for help. Certainly more helpful advice then saying your entitled to your dead wife’s reincarnation, at least.

Katara-Sokka vs Katara-Zuko
in talking about her mother’s death
First, Sokka…
Tumblr media
—wow, the full picture. This makes Katara’s misplaced anger at Sokka less unreasonable, doesn’t it?
The other times Katara mentioned her mother in Sokka’s presence, the scenario did not warrant him to react (The Southern Air Temple, The Swamp, The Puppetmaster). These first and last moments were the only times they had a direct conversation about it on the show. But as you can see, Sokka was either distracted by the situation, thus ignoring Katara’s ranting, or he was siding with someone else. This shows that his way of dealing with their mother’s death had never aligned with Katara’s, and that they do not speak the same language in expressing their emotions, their grief. More thoroughly explored here by @bonesbuckleup
Katara reacts viscerally against injustice, such as misogyny. Sokka used to loudly associate her motherly role with misogynistic gender role, the rightful place for women and girls. Prior to her outburst, Sokka said “Leave it to a girl to screw things up!” to which she angrily pointed out the responsibilities she took after their mother’s death. This immediate association (of being a girl, being a mother, to unfairness, and their mother’s death) revealed the jumbled reasons to her grief, her anger, and her hurt. And just like with Hakoda, she repressed these negative feelings until the circumstance pushed her to burst. But unlike with Hakoda, Sokka did not respond to her experience, did not acknowledge it as anything other than her usual tirade, unintentionally belittling her feelings.
Ultimately Katara needed an outlet. But due to the aforementioned differences, Katara could never confide in Sokka about her grief and grievances. Yes they are siblings who shared a mother, but Katara is also a mother to Sokka. And she cannot be a mother when facing this trauma.
Now, Zuko…
—dear readers, do you want to be someone who see half-truths or whole-truths?
It is a common antis’ belief that Zuko enabled her rage…
Tumblr media
But then there are also these moments… moments that come after and are actually more profound due to their structural placements within the story…
Tumblr media
—Talk about range huh?
So more accurately, Katara showed a plethora of emotions to Zuko: Hate? Yes. But also, empathy. Anger? Yes. But also, gentleness. Indignance? Yes. But also, vulnerability… Zuko’s presence in Katara’s rage was as much enabling as Hakoda’s presence was, if you call that enabling at all.
For Zuko to be the one with Katara at the last chapter of her dealing with her mother’s death brought a profoundly nuanced emphasis on their relationship. It also, very simply, makes the most sense. But not just because they shared similar pasts…
Zuko’s and Katara’s mothers each shed light and guided the core of their characters. Zuko’s mom shed light to Zuko’s “never give up without a fight,” beginning with his firebending skills, and evolving to his pursuit of redemption and healing. That is who Zuko is, and that is his core character that prevails. Katara’s mom indirectly shed light to her “never ever turn my back on people who need me,”  beginning with Katara replacing her mother’s role, and evolving to her helping the downtrodden indiscriminately.  That is who Katara is, and that is her core character that prevails.
So it is only fitting that Katara closed the last chapter of her mother with Zuko. Their similar connections to their mothers and its impact on each their characters allowed Katara to be herself around Zuko, and she needed to be herself to move on… not as "Katara the Mother", the mother who takes care of Team Avatar, but as "Katara the Daughter", the daughter who lost a mother.
Previously
P.S. on her last encounter with Yon Rah and her mom.

9 Stunning Medieval Perched Villages in Calabria, Italy
A world above the cities and magnificent beaches, the magic of Calabria, the southernmost region of the Italian peninsula, is found more in its perched villages than its monuments.
If you think you’ve already seen Italy because you’ve been to Rome, Venice, and Milan, you made an impressive dent in the culture of the country’s cities but you missed a lot of its magic. Atop Italy’s many mountains, in various states of decay and preservation, hundreds of villages remain from the middle ages (and earlier). Every one of them is a photographer’s paradise of snaking alleys and frenetically stacked houses with killer views, and many have fantastic beaches below, but each of them has a distinct personality worth discovering. It’s within these villages that you’ll truly come to know the Italian people and culture much more than in the crowded cities (and you’ll definitely get more invites to nonna’s house for homemade pasta).
Altomonte
Tumblr media
Perched above the Esaro River valley, surrounded by mountains and overlooking lake streams, the medieval village of Altomonte is so prized by Italian brides for its pristine views and romantic architecture that it’s been dubbed “the wedding city.” Not getting married? You can still find romance (of the historical variety) with a stay in a 12th-century castle that’s now a hotel, or a visit to Renaissance-era library in a Dominican monastery. While the village stays current with music festivals and even modern art spaces, it’s truly the past that keeps Altomonte alive and high atop the list of Italy’s most beautiful villages.
Amantea
Tumblr media
Famous for its chocolate-covered figs, Amantea dates back to the 7th century and boasts Byzantine castle ruins at its highest point. Winding down the hillside through the old village, you’ll find a 15th-century church with a sea view worthy of the divine—the perfect place to stop and indulge in the village’s traditional pistachio gelato. At the bottom, there’s nearly a mile of modern shops leading straight to Amantea’s coastline and its seemingly endless beach lined with the occasional bar and plenty of beach volleyball matches.
Badolato
Tumblr media
High atop Mt. Saint Nicholas in Calabria is the thousand-year-old village of Badolato Superiore. With about 200 full-time residents, much of the village is empty but this no ghost town. A handful of engaged community groups, in conjunction with the local government, are actively renovating centuries-old houses and restoring them to upscale homes.
Today, a colorful cast of international transplants makes up a fair percentage of the village’s residents, but Badolato remains authentic Calabrian to its core. Italian moms still hand-roll pasta in restaurant kitchens, labyrinthine alleyways confound and amaze as they wrap up and around the mountainside through impossibly thin openings, and the siesta is a well-honored afternoon mandate.
Bova
Tumblr media
Three thousand feet up with views of the Ionian Sea and Mt. Etna, it’s no wonder that Bova has been occupied since Neolithic times, sought and conquered by the Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, and Normans (among others) in its pre-Italian history. Dozens of noteworthy churches and palazzos speckle the village, but the castle ruins offer an astounding panoramic view worth climbing for.
For something out of the ordinary among Italy’s mountaintop offerings, check out Bova’s paleontology museum. And if you’ve ever dreamed of a palace made of wine, be sure to visit Palazzo Nesci. Local lore holds that the palazzo’s red stones are a result of a water shortage during construction, prompting the masons to use wine instead.
Fiumefreddo Bruzio
Tumblr media
A mouthful to say, Fiumefreddo Bruzio has plenty more than its name to stuff your mouth with. While the chili pepper reigns supreme throughout most of the Southern Italy, cheese takes a strong second place here. From provolone to ricotta, this village specializes in a boatload of cheeses, but the most unique is filiciata, a soft cheese served in fern leaves. After a day of eating, climb the castle ruins for a dreamy sunset over the Tyrrhenian Sea, seen through crumbling windows originally shaped in 1201.
Gerace
Tumblr media
Gerace is perched on a 1600-foot mass of sea fossils 60 million years old, and that’s pretty cool.
Gerace’s castle was constructed as early as the 900s and most of the surrounding medieval town remains intact, including over 100 churches and buildings carved directly out of the surrounding rock. Another excellent wine producer (with vineyards originally planted by Ancient Greeks), Gerace is also known for its ceramics, which make great souvenirs. Though Gerace claims awesome sea views, like most of the mountaintop towns in Italy, the beach is actually six miles from this sky-high perch—a testament to the clear skies and pristine vistas of Calabria.
Morano Calabro
Tumblr media
Italy’s calendar of religious festivals is more than overcrowded—it’s overrun with them. But for events of a more unique variety, the red-roofed village of Morano Calabro has some quirkier options ranging from a folklore festival to the banner-waving festival, complete with medieval reenactments. If you arrive between festivals, there’s plenty of twisty-turny exploration to uncover, and a couple must-sees like the 5th-century monastery of San Bernadino and the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, whose brilliantly tiled cupola can be seen from just about anywhere in the center of Morano Calabro.
Pentedattilo
Tumblr media
A 1783 earthquake drew most of Pentedattilo’s population away from its mountaintop perch, and it finally reached total abandonment in the 1960s. The ghost town remained untouched until the 1980s when international Europeans began restoring a small portion of the village. Today, some of the streets and buildings have been restored by these multinationals, and the village is secured enough to host an annual summer fest and even a film festival. Still, most of the village sits as it has for ages, an empty setting rife for adventure, particularly alluring at night when it is dramatically lit from below.
Stilo
Tumblr media
Stilo’s history dates back over two thousand years and its Calabrian surroundings are so beautiful that monks carved rooms and churches out of the natural rocks to set up life here. By the 10th century, proper churches were on the scene, and one of Italy’s most famous Byzantine examples, Chiesa dell’Annunziata, still stands on the ancient Greek temple columns borrowed for its construction. Stilo is a small village, but the charm of its winding lanes and storied arches revealing views of olive groves, vineyards, and the Ionian Sea make it well worth a stop on any village itinerary.

let mbti rant time begin: katara — INFP (FiNeSiTe)
Fi: most of the mistyping of katara comes from a deep misunderstanding of her character as a “mom friend” or other evils and so they like to paint her as a natural caretaker thus enfj/esfj. in other words some people genuinely think she uses Fe but she doesn’t and that’s bullshit. katara is so obviously defined by introverted feeling it’s insane. she’s all “to me, personally”, focused on her own identity a lot. she is deeply empathetic through the way other people’s experiences parallel her own but she doesn’t really look outside of herself to check if her feelings and values are “valid” nor she tries to make those values communal through working together with other people or manipulation lol but rather by force when necessary (unlike sokka’s entp ass does). it’s clear in all of the episodes really but particularly poignant during the painted lady & the southern raiders where the most logical thing is easily dismissed by her (in contrast to sokka’s Ti mostly, or even aang’s own Fi) in favor of following her gut feeling/internal values instead.
Ne: her extroverted intuition shows a lot when it comes to the world around her. she’s very logical and curious when it comes to the actual things and puzzles around her especially when it comes to waterbending. she uses enough Ne that it supports her Fi but not enough that she could be an enfp (think of the differences between her and aang). but mostly i can say with certainty she doesn’t use Si enough to be a dominant function nor Se since she’s a lot more complicated in her schemes than how dominant sensing would be; a lot more direct and grounded. furthermore she doesn’t use Ni at all lmao, she’s not nearly aware enough of other people for that to work + her only superpower is looking cute at all times.
Si: a lot of her core wound is her introverted sensing, as she’s always looking and reflecting on the past and one of her most important motifs is vivid memories and nostalgia, but she doesn’t learn or gather from it as much as she could (as opposed to zuko’s auxiliary Se that focuses a lot more on the Right Now taking it all as he goes, and is sort of impulsive bc of this. katara is impulsive as well but that's bc sokka enabled her during her formative years and then aang continued to enable her afterwards. tragic).
Te: i think her extroverted thinking function is most evident during ‘the desert’ aka the first time she’s been tested as a hero in an unfamiliar pressing situation which sokka would usually handle if he weren’t uhhh indisposed atm. her extroverted thinking makes her act organized, logically and precise, with a clear head and a goal in mind, if a bit strict, working in harmony with her Fi (hope as her sense of identity). it also shows during the runaway a little bit when she feels excluded from the fun and decides to go all “we don't have time for this!! so irresponsible,,,” as if she were responsible in sooo many other situations the first place when... she isn’t lmao. her Te only comes out under external pressure & it gives her the sudden urge to organize her entire life and those around her, but it’s not well developed enough and it’s not her first or most natural instinct.
so yeah. INFP <3
