Hockey Dad, the Australian duo known for their exhilarating blend of surf-rock and indie-pop, delivers another stellar track with "Safety Pin" from their eagerly anticipated album, Rebuild Repeat, set to drop on June 14th via Farmer & The Owl / BMG. Fresh off a U.S. headline tour, the band is primed for an Australian tour alongside Militarie Gun, kicking off post-album release. Babe Rainbow Announce New Psychedelic Track “Retrograde”
Tumblr media
Babe Rainbow, an Australian band distinguished by their boogie psychedelia and vintage surf cult visuals, epitomizes “stoner pop.” Formed in 2015 by Jack Crowther (aka Cool Breez), Angus Dowling, and Elliot O’Reilly, the trio initially came together around the snack stands of Rainbow Bay. They were employees of John Cutts, a local cultivator near Tropical Fruit World in Duranbah, NSW, where they worked with kale well before it became a mainstream trend. Their sound, which initially drew heavily on 60’s psychedelia and 70’s French surf-pop, has diversified to include a blend of woodland bop, folk disco, dub, dance, and global rhythms, all while preserving an Aquarian vibe through Dowling’s ethereal vocal style and Cool Breez’s resonant guitar play. Their debut release, The Babe Rainbow EP, was produced in an office space in Murwillumbah and received backing from triple j and Flightless Records, the label of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. In 2017, they launched their first album, produced by Stu Mackenzie, and embarked on an international tour alongside acts like King Gizzard, Allah Las, Tomorrow’s Tulips, and La Femme. After releasing their debut album under 30th Century Records of Columbia in 2017, followed by Double Rainbow (2018) and Today (2019), they completed a three-album contract. Babe Rainbow now controls their music rights and continues to release new material under their independent label, Eureka!, in collaboration with AWAL Music. Lightheaded's Debut Album 'Combustible Gems': A Fresh Take on Classic Pop
Tumblr media
Lightheaded is a standout pop group. Their music is rich with melodious tunes and harmonious arrangements that strike a balance between sweet and poignant, both familiar and innovative. Their sound is characterized by the delightful blend of Sara Abdlebarry's dynamic and artful lead guitar on a Gretsch, complemented by the bell-like tones of Stephen Stec's Rickenbacker, all grounded by Cynthia Rickenbach’s Hofner Violin bass, reminiscent of the bass tones on Michel Polnareff's debut album. Cynthia and Stephen craft pop songs with a timeless appeal, drawing from a deep appreciation of classic influences. Cynthia's attire often includes a Gene Clark T-shirt, signaling her admiration for Dusty Springfield, The Aislers Set, and Joan Jett. Stephen, on the other hand, is heavily influenced by Big Star, The Clientele, and The Go-Betweens. Their music, much like that of The Aislers Set and Belle & Sebastian, presents a rich tapestry of pop history and top-tier rock and roll. Their first album, Combustible Gems, explores their musical identity through intricate melodies and chords, producing exceptionally captivating music. The debut single "Dawn Hush Lullaby" blends electric folk-pop with a waltz-like start, transitioning into a vibe akin to Greenwich Village pop, reminiscent of a Norma Tanega song. "Moments Notice" is an irresistibly rhythmic track that starts with a Motown or The Jam feel before Sara's mesmerizing guitar riff elevates it into a sublime pop realm. "Hugging Horizons" could be described as the sound of young New Jersey, a soulful track that ventures into innovative pop territories. The album concludes with "Because of You," which features a Johnny Marr-style guitar and lush strings, capturing a tone that is sophisticated yet earnest, and endearingly sincere. Crumb Unveils New Single “The Bug” and Announces North American Tour!
Tumblr media
Following last month's announcement of their new album AMAMA, Crumb has unveiled a fresh preview with the single "The Bug." Along with the new track, the band has released an engaging and playful music video directed by Haoyan of America. Additionally, Crumb has announced a headline North American tour starting in mid-July. The tour will cover 30 cities, including stops in Chicago, Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, and a hometown concert in Brooklyn. L’Rain, Vagabon, and Discovery Zone will join Crumb on select dates. The full tour schedule is available below, with tickets going on sale this Friday, April 26th, at 10 AM local time. Discussing the new single, Lila Ramani of Crumb explains: "‘The Bug’ has been part of our musical journey since the early days, before the Jinx era. It started in a motel in Nebraska where I woke up covered in bed bug bites. Unable to sleep, I roamed the motel humming what would eventually form the outro of the song. As we recorded it years later, it gained a deeper, more tender meaning—the 'bug' isn't just an insect; it can be a friend, a lover, or a persistent late-night thought." Check out “The Bug” below: AMAMA represents Crumb’s most carefree and heartfelt work to date, mixing poetic abstraction with introspective honesty and inventive soundscapes. The album showcases Crumb in a dynamic and lively mode, incorporating elements like glitchy vocals, cell phone recordings, nautical sounds, sax mouthpiece solos, distorted drum samples, and piano strings muted with Silly Putty. Set for release on May 17th through Crumb Records, the album includes the title track "AMAMA," a vibrant homage to Lila Ramani's grandmother. This track is further enhanced by a music video directed by Abraham El-Makawy, which blends Lila’s archival home footage with fan-submitted artwork, creating a poignant mosaic of nostalgia. With its blend of psychedelia, pop, jazz, and rock, AMAMA further cements Crumb's distinctive musical identity. The album, produced in Los Angeles with Johnscott Sanford and Jonathan Rado, reflects on themes of stability, connection, and clarity amidst a nomadic life. In 2023, Crumb released the single “Le Temple Volant” with Melody’s Echo Chamber, earning praise from Pitchfork, The FADER, Stereogum, and others. AMAMA continues the narrative arc from their earlier works, including the self-titled EP Crumb, Locket, 2019’s Jinx, and 2021’s Ice Melt, which Rolling Stone described as "a captivating trek to the metaphysical and back down to Earth.” Upcoming Tour Dates * with L'Rain and Discovery Zone ^ with Vagabon 7/18 - Des Moines, IA @ Wooly's 7/19 - Minneapolis, MN @ Varsity Theater 7/21 - Chicago, IL @ Pitchfork Music Festival 8/20 - Philadelphia, PA @ Brooklyn Bowl * 8/21 - Silver Spring, MD @ The Fillmore Silver Spring * 8/23 - Richmond, Virginia @ The National * 8/24 - Charlotte, NC @ The Underground * 8/25 - Atlanta, GA @ Buckhead Theatre * 8/27 - Nashville, TN @ Brooklyn Bowl * 8/28 - Indianapolis, IN @ Deluxe * 8/30 - Detroit, MI @ Saint Andrew's Hall * 8/31 - Toronto, ON @ The Concert Hall * 9/01 - Montreal, QC @ Théâtre Beanfield * 9/04 - Brooklyn, NY @ Brooklyn Paramount * 9/05 - New Haven, CT @ Toad's Place * 9/06 - Boston, MA @ Roadrunner * 10/03 - Santa Cruz, CA @ The Catalyst ^ 10/04 - Oakland, CA @ Fox Theater ^ 10/05 - Sacramento, CA @ Ace of Spades ^ 10/07 - Salt Lake City, UT @ The Depot ^ 10/09 - Denver, CO @ The Mission Ballroom ^ 10/11 - Dallas, TX @ Ferris Wheelers ^ 10/12 - Houston, TX @ White Oak Music Hall ^ 10/13 - San Antonio, TX @ Aztec Theatre ^ 10/15 - Austin, TX @ Emo's ^ 10/17 - Albuquerque, NM @ El Rey Theater ^ 10/18 - El Paso, TX @ Lowbrow Palace ^ 10/21 - Santa Ana, CA @ Observatory OC ^ 10/22 - San Diego, CA @ Observatory North Park ^ 10/23 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Wiltern ^ Read the full article

New Remix and Tour Alert: Bodywash Elevates 'Kind of Light' with Khotin's Touch
Tumblr media
Bodywash, a duo from Montreal comprising Chris Steward and Rosie Long Decter, announces a new remix by Edmonton's electronic artist Khotin of their 2023 track "Kind of Light," from their album I Held the Shape While I Could. This release comes ahead of their upcoming North American tour with Airiel and Blushing this June, marking their first tour since the album's release. The band shared that Khotin's Release Spirit was a constant companion on their recent tour, inspiring them with its sounds that ranged from the rugged Pacific Northwest to the bustling NJ Turnpike. They were eager for Khotin to reimagine "Kind of Light." His remix elevates the song's original tension and catharsis into a state of blissful euphoria, making it perfect for early morning play in a chill-out room at a rave, reminiscent of West Coast rave psychedelia and ambient influences. Additionally, here's a visualizer for "Kind of Light" (Khotin Remix): Steward and Long Decter, who met in college in 2014, initially did not connect musically. Steward, a London native, was influenced by British dream pop and classic shoegaze, while Toronto-born Long Decter grew up with folk and Canadiana. They found their unique sound through a blend of airy vocals, intricate guitar work, and atmospheric synths, launching their debut EP as Bodywash in 2016, followed by their first album, Comforter, in 2019. During the lead-up to Comforter, both members experienced significant personal changes, feeling a sense of dislocation that fueled their next creative phase. Their music took a darker, more experimental turn, yet became more invigorating compared to the mellow dream pop of Comforter. In 2021, they brought these new songs to the studio, collaborating with their longtime drummer Ryan White and recording/mixing engineer Jace Lasek of Besnard Lakes. The resulting album, I Held the Shape While I Could, explores themes of decay and renewal through its sonic landscape. The album reflects the concept of home as a shifting notion, an ever-changing place that remains tangible and intangible. Throughout I Held the Shape While I Could, the interplay of Steward’s abstract guitar work and Long Decter’s fluid vocals creates an ambient soundscape that blurs the line between digital and organic, crafting an auditory world that is simultaneously familiar and uncharted. Bodywash Tour Dates: Wed. June 19 - Philadelphia, PA @ Johnny Brenda’s Thu. June 20 - Brooklyn, NY @ Baby’s All Right Fri. June 21 - Boston, MA @ Deep Cuts Sat. June 22 - Burlington, VT @ Higher Ground Sun. June 23 - Montreal, QC @ Bar Le Ritz Mon. June 24 - Toronto, ON @ The Garrison Read the full article

Bullion's 'Affection': A Bold Leap into Intimacy and Innovation in Pop Music
Tumblr media
Set for release this Friday (4/26) via Ghostly International, Affection marks a seminal moment in the illustrious career of Bullion, aka Nathan Jenkins. The album is a testament to his skill as a songwriter and producer, reimagining pop tropes with a visionary twist. In the build-up to this release, Bullion tantalized fans with collaborations featuring Carly Rae Jepsen and Panda Bear. The latest offering, "World_train," sees him joining forces with the esteemed Belgian artist Charlotte Adigéry. Known primarily for her contemplative electronic compositions, Adigéry adopts a folksy, meandering style for this track. The result is a captivating motorik hoedown where both artists' vocals intertwine in an evocative duet. "World_train" is just a glimpse into an album characterized by its eclectic brilliance and Bullion’s signature creative restlessness. Jenkins, a cult hero in the electronic scene, is revered for his ability to bridge artists, genres, and the nuances of UK subcultures. His extensive resume includes work with notable names like Carly Rae Jepsen, Ben Howard, Nilüfer Yanya, and Avalon Emerson, alongside contributions to emerging talents such as Westerman and Joviale. Bullion's discography, which includes critically acclaimed solo projects on Young, The Trilogy Tapes, Jagjaguwar, and his own DEEK Recordings, continues to evolve impressively with "Affection." Affection is not just a pop record; it's an audacious, warm, and occasionally whimsical journey through the public display of warmth and connection. Bullion's music, famously elusive yet undeniably unique, reaches new heights as it delves into the complexities of intimacy, masculinity, and personal identity. The album weaves these themes with nostalgic elements, like the lyrical references to "hat stands and watches" in "World_train." It draws on diverse inspirations—from morning swims to childhood fears, to a book of poetry written by his father—creating tracks that resonate with tender authenticity. Ultimately, Affection is an introspective inquiry into how we perceive others and ourselves, daring to be vulnerable and, perhaps, caring a little less about public perception in the process. This album is a bold, beautifully crafted exploration of modern pop, making it a standout addition to Bullion’s repertoire. Check out “Rare” below: Read the full article

The Most Impressive Album Of The Last 20 Years Has Arrive | Cindy Lee - ‘Diamond Jubilee’
Diamond Jubilee by Cindy Lee, an artistic endeavor helmed by Patrick Flegel, former leader of the band Women, stands as a profound exploration into the depths of experimental pop and noise music. The album is a mesmerizing journey through complex emotional landscapes, cloaked in a mix of haunting melodies and dissonant noise. Purchase the album here From the outset, Cindy Lee's approach to sound in Diamond Jubilee is arrestingly unique. The opening track, which weaves together ethereal vocals with a backdrop of gritty, industrial sounds, sets a tone of melancholic introspection that pervades the entire album. Flegel's use of reverb-laden guitar and lo-fi aesthetics creates a sense of intimacy while simultaneously alienating the listener, a dichotomy that Cindy Lee excels at. Lyrically, the album delves into themes of identity, loss, and transformation. The lyrics are poetic and often cryptic, requiring the listener to engage deeply and repeatedly. Flegel's performance is theatrical in its delivery, with a gender-ambiguous falsetto that adds to the album's eerie and otherworldly atmosphere. Standout tracks like "GLITZ" and "BABY BLUE" showcase Cindy Lee’s ability to balance melody and dissonance. In "I HAVE MY DOUBTS," a plaintive melody is juxtaposed with abrasive soundscapes, creating a hauntingly beautiful disunity. "Shadows" uses minimalistic synth lines and whispered vocals to create a chilling effect that lingers long after the song ends. Production-wise, Diamond Jubilee is a masterpiece of lo-fi techniques, with an aesthetic that feels both raw and meticulously crafted. The use of analog equipment and tape distortion is evident, giving the album a warm, nostalgic feel that contrasts sharply with the modernity of its themes and lyrical content. In conclusion, Diamond Jubilee is a challenging and rewarding listen. It is not an album that seeks to comfort its audience; rather, it confronts them with its stark beauty and complex emotional content. Fans of Cindy Lee, and those who appreciate the outer edges of music production and songwriting, will find much to admire here. This album confirms Patrick Flegel's position as a formidable voice in experimental music, capable of weaving pain and beauty into a tapestry that resonates with a rare depth. Joe Goddard Releases ‘Harmonics’: A Fusion of Intuition and Empathy in Dance Music
Tumblr media
Joe Goddard has been exploring the interplay between intuition and creation. Over the past few years, the UK producer, songwriter, and notable figure in dance and indie music has focused on separating his conscious thoughts from his music-making process, aiming to create a more instinctive and empathetic approach to his work. The culmination of this exploration is his third solo album, “Harmonics,” slated for release on July 12. The album spans 14 tracks that blend elements of UK garage, house, hip-hop, pop, and disco. Goddard collaborates with a diverse group of artists, allowing each to shine within his musical universe. Notable contributions include Eno Williams of Ibibio Sound Machine on the afro-house track “Progress,” UK rapper Oranje on the boom-bap inspired “When Love’s Out of Fashion,” and former Wild Beasts frontman Hayden Thorpe on the house track “Summon.” Hot Chip bandmates Alexis Taylor and Al Doyle feature on “Heal Your Mind,” a reflective half-step ballad, among other guest appearances from artists like Tom McFarland of Jungle, Bronx singer Fiorious, Guinean vocalist Falle Nioke, and UK jazz musician Alabaster DePlume. Today, Goddard released the opening track of “Harmonics,” “Moments Die,” featuring the lush vocals of Brooklyn artist Barrie. The track, inspired by a remix project with Barrie, showcases the ethereal synergy between their talents. Goddard’s lyrical inspiration for the track comes from John Berger’s “And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos.” The accompanying music video, directed by Nathan Castiel, was filmed in New York and Hastings and serves as a visual meditation on the song’s themes. Goddard also highlights his solo work on tracks like “Follow Me,” reflecting his more introspective side. His approach to collaboration on the album emphasizes respect and openness, allowing for a fluid exchange of creative energies without dominating the direction. “Harmonics” derives its name from Goddard’s desire to produce an inclusive, empathetic, and harmonious collection of music. The album seeks to celebrate the deeper, spiritual connections in music, contrasting with the aggressive divisions often seen in the world today. It promises a celebration of compassion, collaboration, and creativity, resonating with the soulful essence that Goddard admires in his favorite genres like soul, funk, house, and garage.
