The different species of Weaboos

Yesterday, I was watching this video about all the different sub-types of weebs, and while I do agree on everything said there, I feel like James didn't go far enough down the rabbit hole. So I decided to list a few of the "kinds" of weaboos I have dealt with on the internet.

(James is an awesome guy btw. You should watch his videos)

Weaboos

Possibly the most famous one. These are people - usually American or from other Western or West-leaning countries - that are obsessed with Japanese culture for one reason or another; usually due to overexposition to anime and/or manga. I have to admit, I was a bit of a weeb myself in my emo days, but it didn't go further than that. Some weebs, though, manage to sink down into some bizarre pipeline that turns them into a bizarre version of a Japanese nationalist. They start claming that Japan is the greatest country in the world, and anime is the perfect form of art, and Japanese girls are the epitome of (wo)mankind. It doesn't take long before they also start denying Japanese war crimes and defending their occupation of Korea. How they went from liking anime to endorsing war criminals is beyond me.

Koreaboos

Whilst weaboos are usually teenage boys (with the occasional thirty-something neckbeard thrown in), koreaboos are almost always teenage girls. They are people obssessed with Korean culture (specifically South Kora), or at least their weird version of it. Like weebs, most of their experience (or lack thereof) comes from popular Korean media, like K-pop and Koream dramas. They also love to idolise South Korea, claiming it to be a perfect society full of hot twinks with coloured hair, and as the above example, some of them tend to become political extremists as well. It's kinda funny to me how weebs and koreaboos hate each other due to their obssessive worship of rival countries. I used to know this kpop fangirl who once told me she hated wacthing anime because of what the Japanese did to Korea. That's like, I don't know, refusing to eat a hamburger because of the American Civil War.

Chinaboos

They aren't very common, but they are slowly growing in size as China herself expands her influences. These are people obssessed with Chinese history, Chinese dramas, and Chinese pop songs. I kinda dislike this kind a little less than I dislike the others - mostly because I am a admirer of Chinese culture myself -, but they have this weird tendency to deny the existence of China's misdeeds - while I am yet to see a chinaboo outright deny the Tiananmen square massacre or the Uyghur Genocide, most chinaboos I've met claim that China is and has always been the world's biggest superpower, and "dethroning" America is her fate. Crazy stuff.

Teaboos

These guys are funny as hell. They're people who are obssesed with the UK, specifically England and the English monarchy. The type of people to stay awake for the entire night watching the new king's coronation, or the queen's funeral. They also frequently endorse the British Empire. I've had people come to me and say to my fucking face that they wished that Britain had colonised our country. People who idolise celebrities are already weird, but foreign politicians? That's a whole other level of screwed up.

Ouiaboos

I will never understand this. People who idolise France, praising their sophisticated culture and their chesse and wine and unpronounceable words. Some also like to endorse Napoleon and claim he was the most influential human being in modern history and an absolute gigachad.

I have never seen ouiaboos defending French colonialism, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Wehraboos

The worse there is. People who idolise the Third Reich and their "efficient way of running things". If they were that efficient, why did they lose the war? They are almost always racist fucks.

Kaiserboos

The older cousin of wehraboos. They idolise the Kaiserreich and love the German monarchy, sometimes Prussia and Bismarck as well. Though not always racist, they usually have quite the controversial opinions on WW1. Guaranteed to be an EU4 or HOI4 player.

Romaboos

I kinda hate those guys for staining the image of Rome. These are people who idolise the Roman Empire, claiming it was the peak of Western civilisation at a time where "men were men" and "things were proper". Have you ever seen an incel on Twitter or Discord whose pfp is a Roman marble statue? That's one of them. They are usually very sexist, racist and homophobic, completely ignoring the fact that Rome was an incredibly diverse empire where homosexuality and gay marriage was about as common as brushing your teeth.

Leeaboos

Named after Confederate general Robert E. Lee, these are people - always Americans, thankfully - who idolise the Confederate States and the American Civil War. Like Wehraboos, they are guaranteed to be racist and sometimes also pro-slavery, claiming that it was an unjust war where the glorious freedom of their rebellious country was suppressed. Nevermind that the Confederacy was a barely-functioning oligarchy that lasted less than a decade.

Imperiaboos

Pretty much the Brazilian version of a leeaboo. They are people who romanticise imperial times and wish for the return of the Brazilian monarchy. They will go on and on about how the Empire was secretly one of the greatest economies in the 19th century (it wasn't), how they had the manpower to conquer the entirety of Latin America if they wished (they didn't), and how they were so cool they even scared off mighty Brittania that one time (which is actually true, though not as glorious as they claim). They are also frequently very racist and pro-slavery. Every time we have a shitty president (which unfortunately happens more often than not), they pop out outta nowhere claiming that "The Emperor would never allow that!" and so on.

Soviaboos

It always striked me as funny how so many soviaboos are of American origin. These people like to endorse the Soviet Union - or, in rare cases, the Russian Empire - claiming that it was the greatest superpower the world had ever seen, and openly wishing for its return. They commonly refer to their friends as "comrades" and tend to idolise Communist symbols and aesthetics in general. Generally very unpleasant to be around, though at least they are anti-capitalist and anti-american imperialism, so that's already a step on the right direction I suppose.

As much as the character creator got a big buff in Legendary Edition, it was still never enough to convey the design that my Shepper has in my head. However with so much cc out there TS4 could definitely provide where ME:LE couldn’t in the design department!

This is her! Her name is Mercy Vedati (Shepard isn’t her canon name in my headcanon, I gave her a south asian surname instead c:)

She’s a 32 year old biracial lady (Nepalese-Dominican) and also has CIPA. Like Joker, an illness that would normally have a high mortality rate has a lot of treatments in the ME universe to facilitate Mercy living a life that allows her to be in the military. As a Spacer it certainly helped having access to military health insurance as a dependent!

Her mother: Ekta Vedati is Nepalese and a buddhist, and Mercy was raised in this religion but did not start actively practicing it until after the Sole Survivor incident on Akuze in order to cope with her trauma.

Aligning with her beliefs, she’s a paragon who does not drink, is a vegetarian, and only ever kills in self-defense.

As she’s an infiltrator I model her more after the N7 Shadow in multiplayer, so she uses a sword, rather than a katana esque shape, she owns both a kukri and a kora sword, but only wields one at a time. She also practices bajra, a nepali martial art that Ekta taught her that combines kyokushin, thai boxing, kick boxing and taekwondo to make quite an effective martial art form.

She does not have a hamster, but instead a two-meter Indian rock python named Karma. Her fish tank is filled with banded catsharks and rather than model ships she has her swords mounted on the wall of her cabin.

One of the last memories she had of her father who passed away when she was still a child was of reading her a fantasy book with unicorns in it to calm her when she would have nightmares of the ships they lived on spontaneously exploding. Inspired by the nature of unicorns being a good omen, she started vandalising ships by finding a hidden spot to carve a tiny unicorn into a panel to “protect the ship.” She has since grown out of that fear, but to keep her father’s memory alive she instead carves a little unicorn into each of her guns and on both of her swords.

Her relationship with Garrus is more of a slowburn in my head, with regular sparring sessions on the Normandy Turian style to keep them both sharp in close quarter combat. And it took Mercy time to build up the courage to ask him that fateful question.

Montañera — A Flor de Piel (Western Vinyl)

María Mónica Gutiérrez, who goes by the stage name of Montañera, sings softly, blurrily against a minimalist background of electronic and organic sounds. Obliquely, she considers the immigrant experience and her own journey from Colombia to London in pensive, Spanish-language lyrics and, sometimes fragmentary bits of Afro-Latin sound.

Her opening salvo, “A Flor de Piel,” makes a metaphor out of the Columbian adage, “a flor de piel” which describes the sudden rush to the surface of feelings, so that emotion, like the blush that can come from it, seems to erupt directly from the skin. It starts with just her voice, clear but somehow also remote, as she stretches the title phrase into a blues-y slide. Keyboards burble softly in the background, then some string plucks (she plays the kora). She finds her way through the melody tentatively, seeming, in the chorus, about to rear up into a crescendo, but aside from some doubled harmonies, the tune remains subded. The song feels spare—and it definitely gives her singing room to breathe—but there’s a lot going on in the details, a smattering of sharp and smooth sounds.

There’s very little of her South American roots in the way that song sounds, nor will you find much in “Vestigios,” which follows. This one starts with an oscillating synth sound, long squiggly notes in alternation. Some keyboard chords land at critical moments for emphasis and skitter of perussion rattles to life. But despite these elements, the track is eerie and disembodied. Gutiérrez’s voice is very quiet but cuts right through to the center, like a whisper in one of those caves that directs the sound.

It is only with “Santa Mar” that we begin to feel centered, geographically. The cut is criss-crossed with the chants and cries of Las Cantadoras de Yerba Buena, an all-female vocal group from Colombia and punctuated by the gently syncopated melodies of marimba player Cankita. Even Gutiérrez’s own voice sounds rougher, warmer and more grounded in this cut, less the disembodied spirit more a member of a specific world that has shaped her musically and otherwise. “Como Una Rama,” later on, has the same kind of visceral impact, though its yearning vocals fray at intervals into electronic bleeps and squiggles. It’s also the most uplifting and buoyant of these songs, with lush, multi-voiced intervals that sweep you up in emotion. Which emotion? It’s hard to say. All these tracks have a tinge of melancholy, but also a wide-eyed ecstatic wonder, hurt and spiritual epiphany in uneasy balance.

Gutiérrez’s music traces the remarkable journey she’s made from a traditional, African-influenced, Latin culture to the digital age melting pot that is contemporary London. You might like the warmer, groovier, world-tinged cuts the best (I do) as they filter memory through a space-age skrim, but the electronics are just as real as the call-and-response and just as much a part of Gutiérrez’s art.

Kiernan, affectionately known as ‘AKA’, was arguably South Africa's greatest hip-hop artist of all time.

The first born of Tony and Lynn Forbes, his formative years were spent in his grandmother’s care in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, Western Cape. He began his schooling at Holy Cross Convent, and then moved onto Greenside Primary School when he relocated to the bustling city of Johannesburg in the mid 1990s to live with his mother. His high schooling was done at the prestigious St Johns’s College, a private all-boys school nestled in the affluent suburb of Houghton Estate, Johannesburg. The school boasts former alumni such as former UJ Vice Chancellor & Principal, Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala; author Dr. Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh; former soccer star Kaizer Motaung Jr; presenter ‘Maps’ Maponyane; anti-apartheid activist & African Resistance Movement member, the late Hugh Levin; and disgraced former apartheid-era spy, Craig Williamson, to name a few.

It was while he was at St John’s, that he would form the musical group ‘Entity’, alongside Mpofu-Walsh and Nhlanhla Makenna. Originally, the group consisted of 6 members but they became a trio shortly afterwards. Their chosen stage names were: AKA (Forbes); Vice Versa (Mpofu-Walsh); and Greyhound (Makenna). Each member gave an explanation for their stage names. Forbes said his is derived from him being a different person to all the different people in his life; for Mpofu-Walsh, it’s double layered: firstly, it’s a pun on verse writing in the hip-hop tradition and secondly, it’s due to his mom being white and his dad being black, enabling him to see life from both side of the (racial) spectrum. For Makenna, he claims it stems from having big ears and a small frame as a kid and being able to run very fast.

The group would go on to release their only studio album in 2005, titled ‘Royal School of Hip Hop’. It’s worth noting that the group members were in grade 11. The album was independently released on Creative Kingdom Records and was produced by former Skwatta Kamo member, Siya ‘Slikour’ Metane. The album was well received and had one single on heavy rotation on radio and Channel O titled, ‘Touch And Go’. They were nominated in the Best Hip Hop Album category at the now-defunct KORA Awards and managed to perform at the awards ceremony. Sadly, the group disbanded after their matric year in 2006. According to Mpofu-Walsh, a second album was recorded but was never released.

Following the end of Entity, Forbes would go study sound engineering. It was while pursing his studies that he met with Ntokozo ‘Buks’ Mazibuko and Kamohelo ‘Kamza’ Mbatha, and formed the production team ‘IV League’. The three of them would fundamentally change the course of South African Hip Hop music and produce many hits such as ‘Tswakstikem’ by Khuli Chana, ‘Tla K'o Bone’ by Reason, ‘Monate So’ by Shugasmakx, "Victory Lap" by AKA (and the whole of his debut album Altar Ego) and ‘Bhampa’ by Pro, among others. Following this successful run, Forbes would leave the team and join up with Vth (pronounced fifth) Season. It would be his partnership with the indie label that he would see his greatest run of success and garner numerous international awards and have the distinction of being the only rapper to have a record go platinum without any vernac on it.

He dabbled in a few business ventures, such as the ill-fated BEAM Group, under which he released his third album, the double platinum ‘Touch My Blood’. He then landed a rare sneaker deal with international brand, Reebok. The SneAKA collaboration was well received and a limited edition run was sold out in no time. He then bagged a liquor collaboration with New York-based Cruz Vodka. The deal allowed him to have his own signature flavours, boasting the ever-popular Watermelon edition and the Banana edition.

As much as he was known for his musical talents, he was also known for his romantic relationships. His first significant relationship was with famed DJ Zinhle Jiyane, which spawned his only child, daughter Kairo Owethu Forbes, born 8 July 2015. He then had a whirlwind romance with iconic media personality and wine maker, Bonang Matheba. The relationship’s demise was widely discussed in the media and public with allegations of muti being used hurled around. He then got into a relationship with the late Anele Tembe, whom he got engaged to in February 2021. Sadly, Tembe would lose her life in an apparent suicide by jumping from the tenth floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town. Numerous videos of the pair’s arguments made the rounds on social media and allegations of abuse were labelled against Forbes. The police cleared him of any involvement in Tembe’s untimely passing. He began a relationship with rapper Nadia Nakai in 2022.

Forbes was scheduled to perform at Yugo, a popular nightclub in Durban when he was gunned down by two unknown assailants. He and his former manager, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were struck six times and died on the scene. Forbes is survived by his parents, younger brother Steffan and his girlfriend, Nakai.

He was laid to rest in a private burial on 18 Feb 2023 and is buried at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.

İzleme listemde bir süre yerini koruduktan sonra sırası gelen bu dizide hep senarist hem de oyuncular ile ilk kez tanıştık. Senaristinde oyuncularında daha önce isim yapmış işleri olsa da ben dizileri güncel çıkış tarihleri ile izlemediğim için tersten tanışıyorum. Birçok yazıda Goblin dizisi ile kıyaslanıp, çift olarak da çok eleştiri almışlar. Ben Goblin’i sonradan izlediğim için çok yadırgamadım. Belki de benim yaptığım doğru sıralamadır.

Dizinin konusuna gelecek olursak, bir miktar tane tane anlatacağım. O nedenle tane tane okuyalım. Dizi birbiri ile aynı zaman düzleminde ilerleyen iki paralel evreni anlatıyor. Dizinin konusunu anlatırken zaman yolculuğu diyenler olmuş, şeytan peşinde koşuluyor denilmiş, dünyamıza giren kötü ruh evrenleri yok ediyor, bla bla bla… Dizinin konusu iki paralel evren. Bu kadar. Paralel evrenlerden birisi, Kora krallığı, burada modern bir krallık söz konusu, Joseon dönemi gibi değil yani. 1994 yılında kral kardeşi Lee Lim( Lee Jung-Jin ) tarafından öldürülüyor. Kralın oğlu Lee Gon (Lee Min-Ho) ’u da öldürüp büyülü bir flütün sahibi olacakken, gizemli biri tarafından veliaht prens kurtarılıyor. Kurtaran kişi ortadan kaybolurken geride bir kadın polis kimlik kartı bırakıyor. Flüt ikiye bölünüyor. Lee Lim flütün yarısı ile ortadan kayboluyor. Lee Gon çocuk yaşta tahta çıkıyor. Ve 25 yıl geçiyor.

İkinci dünya ise bildiğimiz Kore Cumhuriyeti. Jeong Tae Eul( Kim Go-Eun ) bu dünyada yaşayan bir dedektif ve yıllar önce diğer dünyada düşen kimliğin sahibidir. Şiddet suçları biriminde görev yapmaktadır.

Bir gün Lee Gon elinde flütün yarısı ile ormanda gizemli bir kapı açar ve atının üzerinde Kore Cumhuriyetine geçer. Bu noktada hikaye aslında başlamış olsa da, bu şekilde konusunu net anlatan bir ön yazı olmadığı için ilk 4 bölüm kim kimdir, ne olmaktadır diye kafalar karışık gizem bulutları içerisinde izliyorsunuz. Bende biri bana bunu bu kadar basit bir şekilde anlatsın isterdim diziye başlamadan önce.

Fantastik bir dizi olmasının yanı sıra içine biraz bilimkurgu ekleyelim, matematik serpiştirelim, paralel evren olsun, izafiyet teorisini de koyduk mu oldu bu iş mantığı ile ilerlenmiş. Flüt efsanesini dahil ederek masallara da göz kırpmışlar. Alice ve kral Arthur masallarına el sallamışlar. Ben ki zaman ile ilgili dizilerde çok geriliyorum. Anlamaya çalıştıkça daha büyük bir bilinmezin içine düştüğüm için inanılmaz geriliyorum. Keza bu dizide de daha önce okuduğumuz bildiğimiz kavramlar üzerinden gidersek kesinlikle paradoks olması gereken durumlar söz konusuydu. Flütü bahane ederek geçiştirdiler ama paradoks, paradokstur. Ayıp.

Konu başlarda inanılmaz yavaş ilerliyordu. Dediğim gibi bir şeylerin oturup anlaşılabilmesi için 4 bölüm geçirmek gerekti. Lee Gon küçükken geçirdiği suikast girişiminde Tae Eul’un kimlik kartını aldığı için yıllar boyunca onu aramış, onu beklemiş. Eee, Tae Eul ? Onun bir şeyden haberi yok ki! Tabi burada nasıl şuan aynı yaştalar diyerek hikayeye zamanda yolculuk da karışıyor. Bu noktada kadının adama olan aşkı biraz havada kalıyor. Ne ara tanıdın bildin sevdin de tutkuyla bağlandın, çok ilginç. Sonrasında yaşadıkları aralarında olan sahneler rahatsız etmedi ama çok hızlı aşama atlamaları biraz saçma geldi.

Dizinin çekimleri, sahneler, kurgular çok güzeldi. Zaman mevzusu dışında senaryo elle tutulur kaliteli bir işti. Goblin daha önce aynı senarist tarafından yazılmış ve yayınlanmış. Sırası ile izleyenlerle bu konuda hem fikirim ki, Goblin’i geçememiş. Başka dizilerde de dikkatimi çeken bir diğer konuda bölüm sonlarında damdan düşer gibi bir sahne ile şaşırtıp bitiriyordu. Sonraki bölümde ise bölüm başında 10 dk o sahneye nasıl geldiklerini gösterip gizemi çözüyorlar. Yani bölüm sonu bir gizem yaratıp, bir sonrakinin başında çözüyorlar. İlginç bir teknik, fena da bulmuyorum açıkçası. İzleyici dikkatini belli bir seviyede tutmayı başarıyor.

Söylemeden geçemeyeceğim; o ürün yerleştirme nedir Allah aşkına. Bütün dizilerde var evet ama bu sefer dizi bütçesi yetmedi herhalde ki ürün yerleştirmesi bitmek bilmedi. Dizi sonrası tavuk satışı inanılmaz fırlamış zaten. Tavuğu, vitamini, cilt bakımı derken bir de üzerine uzun uzun karakterlerde sohbet ettiler dizi boyunca. O kora krallığında yüzlerine taktıkları bakım aleti neymiş diye ben bile düşündüm. Her seferinde çıtır tavuk mu yesek dedim. Amaçlarına ulaştılar yani helal olsun.

Son olarak, iki oyuncudan bahsetmek istiyorum ve kapanış. Biri başrol kızımız, Kim Go-Eun. Adamcağıza olan aşkı ilk etapta bize geçmese de bunun tamamen senaryo kaynaklı olduğuna inanıyorum. Zira diğer dünyada var olan kendisi Luna karakterini oynarken gördüğümde takdir ettim. Başka bir karaktere bürünmüştü adeta, açıp aynı oyuncu mu acaba diye kontrol ettim. American Fiction, the new movie from Cord Jefferson, is out today.
