Things about Suzuki Sonoko that I deem as facts
(aka more of my headcanons: a thrilling sequel to the Sonoko and Shinichi friendship)
as much as she denies it, she is lactose intolerant
she didn't realise she was lactose intolerant until she complained that she wasn't sure why people liked drinking milk because it hurts your stomach? Shinichi and Ran lunged across the table to wrestle the milkshake from her hands
Ran dared her to memorise the first 10 digits of pi. Shinichi called her a coward and told her to do 15. she spent two (2) days memorising the first 24. one of her useless talents but she is proud of it
always overdressed, or dressed too nicely for the occasion (her family is always in the spotlight and she needs to look her best. that has been instilled into her from a very young age)
went to ballet classes for three weeks when she was 5. she quit because she didn't want to practice (she was there for the pretty dresses and was very disappointed to find out she couldnt wear them straight away)
randomly has chunks of Shakespeare committed to memory and will recite it to Shinichi whenever he annoys her too much ("If he can do it with Holmes, I'm going to do it with Shakespeare")
when she's pissed, Ran and Shinichi just know to keep quiet and let her do the talking. everyone else thinks she's being dramatic and a diva queen, but they're used to it and they don't bat an eye
is being scared of the dark childish? she outgrew that fear until someone tried to bludgeon her to death in the dark, so now her and the dark dont mix
can speak multiple languages. is essentially fluent in English (because "you need to be able to talk to clients"), moderately fluent in Korean, and knows a few conversational starters in French.
currently studying sign language
has gotten annoyed at herself when she feels jealous because she can see that her two best friends are in love with each other, but she's alone. but then she snaps out of it because those dorks are hers and they would never leave her behind
she has a fear that people will leave and abandon her. either they realise that her personality (that she built to protect herself from everyone) is too much or that they cant easily access her money than they originally thought
(there are nights she thinks that she is unlovable. so many people tried to get close to her in an attempt to get money from her, and she feels like that's all she is) (Ran and Shinichi are so quick to drive those fears away)
when Shinichi didn't contact her after he disappeared? yeah her brain tried to convince her that he was trying to distance from her (because why else would he only contact Ran and not her weren't they supposed to be best friends-) (she broke down and he apologised immediately and told her it wasn't like that at all)
she 100% believes there is something weird with Conan. the brat is either cursed or some cryptid causing havoc. she is begging Ran to see it
all of her friends believe that she has adopted Conan and the other kids (it's true that she is fighting Ran over their custody, but she will never admit such a thing)
she doesn't realise it but she calls Conan 'the little one'
she calls her two best friends by terms of endearment. she calls Ran 'Honey' and calls Shinichi 'Darling'. a lot of the time 'darling' sounds like an insult, but it is affectionate
she got her cat, Gobu-chan (Goblin for long) from a shelter, and he was the grumpiest and scruffiest looking cat. she fell in love immediately and knew that her mother would hate him, which was more of an incentive to get him
it took her a few weeks to fully forgive Kazuha for acting so cold towards Ran (because no one is allowed to make Ran upset)
is the photographer of her friend group. she finds all the best lighting and aesthetic places
she drags Makoto out to cute spots that she finds on their dates
she also suffers from hayfever but she WILL get the cherry blossom pics regardless of her personal safety
(Makoto was stressed the entire date)
consistently sends Shinichi candid photos of Ran as motivation for him to get his ass back home (he tells her that bribing him won't actually make the case solve on its own. she argues that given enough time her work will pay off and he will come back) (he saves each photo religiously)
Suzuki Sonoko is a great girl. She is more than just the sassy heiress that throws money around (she is that but she does it well) and deserves all the love and support
Shenanigans in Beika is where you can find more of her being her fun self :)

It Has Always Been You, Chapter 4
Shinichi and Ran met each other and cleared the air between them. Everything is fine. Or is it?
A/N: Hello! Here we have another chapter and didn’t take as long as the last one! :’D Well, to be honest, I planned to publish this a week ago, but sadly I got sick and didn’t have the energy to work with this. And it’s sad because this week had been so busy with everything else, but since I wanted so badly to publish this, I decided to find time to finish this! And I’m so excited! Every time I reread this chapter, I get so excited to continue this! I am also so happy that I got the last week of this semester on next week, so after that, I start my holiday and hopefully have more time to write this ^^ I’m so excited to get my hands on the next chapter!
But before we get the next chapter done, I hope you enjoy this one :3
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4: "Are you sure?"
Ran looked at that American woman whom Shinichi had asked her to meet. She listened to how this woman told her in English how she and Shinichi had met - the same story that Shinichi had told her, but a longer version. It has more descriptions and more details. It was a version that Ran wasn’t sure if she really wanted to hear about. Julia smiled all the time and talked about him with so much enthusiasm. She didn’t even hide how much Shinichi had told her about Ran and even told her how Shinichi had told about their breakup and how it had broken his heart…
It made her feel bad. It really did. She almost wanted to stand up and go to the table where Shinichi sat, reading something and sipping his coffee. He had come with them, just in case there was going to be some kind of language barrier between them, but told them that he was going to take another table and just be there by himself. But Ran just wanted to stand up, go to him, and apologize - again. She hadn’t done very well with their breakup. She had always claimed to be there for him, and yet she realised now how she had just thrown him away, forgotten him until he had disappeared.
And Ran wanted to hate Julia. She wanted to hate how happy she looked, how she told her everything about them and their relationship and asked questions about Ran and her relationship with Shinichi. Julia didn’t even seem to think that maybe Ran wouldn’t want to share with her. And some kind of monster part of her has woken up in her. Like she wanted to share things that only she knew about Shinichi. Those were only hers to know, and if Shinichi hadn’t revealed them to Julia, she didn’t see any reason why she should share them!
But Ran knew she was just being selfish. What in the world she would do with that knowledge anymore? And another thing was, she really couldn’t hate Julia. She seemed to be nice and kind, straightforward and eager. Curious. And she talked about Shinichi so highly.
“Shinichi is so awesome, right?” Julia asked. “He is reliable and righteous and so brave! But he is also nice and kind and romantic. He is someone who you can always lean on and who makes you feel safe.”
Like she needed to tell those things to Ran. She knew it. God, she wanted to say that she knew better than anyone else! But still, she just smiled and told her that she was right. In the end, Shinichi deserved only the best, and Julia seemed to be one who genuinely liked him - loved him.
And it felt terrible to admit it. Ran wondered if she should have declined that offer when Shinichi had asked her to meet Julia. She was doubting if she really wanted to meet her, just because she felt heartbroken and wasn’t sure if she was ready, but at the same time, she hadn’t had the heart to decline it.
But now she was sure that she hadn’t been ready for this.
“I love him”, Julia said with the happiest smile on her face. “I love him so, so much! I love him more than anything!”
“Ran?”
Ran shook her head and turned to look at Sonoko, who smiled at her. “Let’s go, the game is going to start soon!”
Ran needed a moment to look around to get herself back to this moment and remind herself that she wasn’t in that cafe anymore. Instead, she saw familiar faces from her high school years, smiling and talking and ready to move inside. Everyone seemed to be so excited about the laser tag that they were planning to play before going to a restaurant. And that excitement started to catch Ran too.
“Yeah, let’s go”, she answered. She followed Sonoko and almost promised herself just to enjoy tonight, but then she saw a glimpse of Shinichi, who was talking and laughing with others. And somehow something heavy dropped on her heart. She looked at that smile that had always made her heart race in her chest and butterflies fly in her stomach, and she remembered Julia, how happy she had looked yesterday when they had met. When she had told Ran how much she loved Shinichi…
“I love him so, so much! I love him more than anything!”
She knew she shouldn’t have been bothered by those words. She knew she should move on, just be happy for him, for them. But at the same time, she also remembered those times when Shinichi had told her that he loved her. He had always said he loved her more than anything. He never repeated those words too often, which was the reason that it sounded so special when he had said them.
She wondered if he had said those same words to Julia too. And if something, that made her heart ache.
But it was her own fault. She had let him go. And it was only right that he had moved on. And… she was happy about it.
She still remembered the moment before they had parted away yesterday. All that time, Ran had wanted to tell Julia to take good care of Shinichi, because he was still so special and important to her, but at the same time, she hadn’t got those words out of her mouth. She knew that part of her had been scared to let go of him. She knew she should, but… but…
She just wasn’t ready.
And she moved her eyes away from Shinichi, trying to concentrate on what other women were talking about. She was here, having fun with others! And she would do it! And since Julia wasn’t here, she could pretend this one evening that everything was like before. She could pretend that they were still friends like in high school, she could forget that he had a fiancée… And she could forget that tomorrow, he was going back to America and she wouldn’t see him ever again.
She would survive, right?
“Hah, you were losers from the start!”
“Shut up, Tashiro-san! We almost won!”
“In your dreams!”
“Yeah, we would have”, Aizawa continued, and Shinichi saw how he angrily glanced at him. “If someone wouldn’t have been so weak and given that win for Mouri-san.”
Shinichi put a dry smile on his lips. “Speaks the one who dropped out the first.”
Aizawa grimaced. “Come on, you could have won! It was just you and Mouri-san, you could have won!”
“Well, can’t help it”, Hidaka interrupted. “Ran-san just is better than Kudo-kun…”
“Hah! He lost only because it was Mouri!”
“Now now, you two…”
“Hey, don’t listen to him”, Shinichi heard Nakamichi say. He felt a hand on his shoulder. “He is just a bad loser.”
“I don’t care”, Shinichi answered and looked at his old friend with a grin. “It was fun.”
Women versus men were their teams. It had been the fastest way to make teams and start the game.
To be honest, he hadn’t been a big fan of the idea of laser tag. Like… could there be anything more childish? But he couldn’t lie, as soon as he had seen how excited others had been, he had decided to go along - and finally got excited too and given his all.
He did. He really did. When other boys from his team had dropped out one by one, he had fought his way and took out girls as much as possible.
Until it had been he against Ran. How they had stared at each for a moment, realising that it was only two of them. And that grin… God, somehow Shinichi had remembered how much they had hated to lose each other. He had met an opponent who wasn’t easy to take down.
That fight had been very enjoyable. Ran didn’t go easy on him, and he had done everything to win her. He had needed all his skills and senses awake, concentrating only on what Ran had done.
But he had lost. Sadly. But he wasn’t mad about it. It seemed to irritate some of his team members because they believed that he had let Ran have that one, but why in the world he would have done that? Ran was a pretty capable woman and she would have destroyed him if he would go easy on her.
But they didn’t know her like he did.
And Shinichi admitted it, Ran had been on edge. There was a moment when Shinichi had thought that he had her, but sadly, he hadn’t been careful enough. One little mistake and Ran had taken him down.
“Okay, let’s forget it already”, someone shouted, taking Shinichi out of his thoughts. “Let’s go to eat!”
They were reserved a few tables for themselves. From the start, they were sharing what was going on in their lives, what they were doing, and if they still lived in Tokyo. Some of them were married and some even had family already. And some were still single. Shinichi was pretty surprised to see that no one asked anything about him and Ran or what happened to their relationship. When he mentioned that he was engaged to Julia, everyone seemed to be silent before congratulating him. Well, it wasn’t like he minded it because part of him didn’t like to get too much attention on himself, but truthfully their congratulations had been a little bit silent.
But at the same time, Shinichi wondered if they had been just in shock. In the end, everyone believed in him and Ran being together forever. And he didn’t blame anyone, because he had believed in that too.
But things had changed and he was just happy that no one didn’t snooped anything else. They didn’t ask what happened to them, and they asked only a little about Julia. Just who she was and how they met.
Of course, after Ran had told them that she was single right now and concentrating on her career, Iwata opened his mouth and asked if she would like to go on a date with him. Which wasn’t a surprise, because Ran was still a beautiful and kind woman, who would get anyone she ever liked to. But like people needed to try to hit her like that? Shinichi almost wanted to go and hit that idiot and teach him some manners, but Ran was faster and refused, saying that he wasn’t the man that she was looking for. Others laughed at him, and Shinichi felt happy. He couldn’t believe that Iwata had thought Ran to be easy prey, and he was happy to know that Ran wasn’t falling for a man like him. Of course, he wasn’t sure how much Iwata had changed during these years but Ran deserved so much better.
But after those so-called formalities, they started to reminisce and talk about everything else. And somehow, pretty fast, it started to feel like they were high schoolers again. Everything turned out to be relaxing and they were joking and laughing at the same things as back then. Shinichi found himself to enjoy about it. Even though he had always been conscientious and enjoyed doing detective work even in high school, he had missed his old classmates and that relaxing atmosphere with them. How playful they could be back then and how much fun they had had.
The food was served and eaten, and they decided to stay for longer, to wait an hour before the nightclub would open and they could start their party. Someone told them that they had a table reserved in the nightclub too, which sounded nice, but Shinichi was still pretty sure that when they left the restaurant, he would go back to the hotel. It wasn’t like he wouldn’t like to spend more time with others, and it wasn’t like he didn’t drink any alcohol, but he just didn’t care about the idea of being in the loud place where everyone was drinking until they were done…
He just liked to spend time with others, drink a drink or two, and just talk. But he believed that the time in the restaurant would be enough for him.
“Hey, Kudo-kun?”
Shinichi ripped himself away from one of those conversations that was going on and looked over his shoulder. He was a little bit surprised to see Sonoko there, looking at him.
“What’s up?” he asked. He started to feel a little nervous because he hadn’t talked with Sonoko after the breakup. Part of him liked how easily she seemed to approach him, but it was Sonoko, and he was pretty sure that anything could come out of her mouth.
“Can we talk a little bit?” she asked.
Shinichi looked at those bluish eyes for a moment, trying to find any hint of what she wanted from him. But all he could see was her seriousness, which kind of told him that it could be anything. Not really helping. But if it was something serious, he felt like there wasn’t a chance to decline. So he shrugged as an answer and stood up.
No one questioned where they were going, so Shinichi just followed Sonoko to another part of the restaurant, a little further from the others. And it only made Shinichi feel restless, even though he tried to ignore it. What in the world did Sonoko want to talk about if she needed to take him this far from others? If she just wanted to fish for information about Julia, she could have done it in front of others. He had already told everyone about his fiancee, so it wouldn’t be a secret anymore. The same goes if she just wanted to hear how he was doing.
So he was sure that the reason for the distance was because she wanted to talk about the breakup. He started to be pretty sure that she was going to blame him for the breakup and his leaving without saying anything. Which would be stupid, because she would have had her chance and it was five years ago. It was a little bit late for that, and besides, since it was Ran’s decision and she got over him, he didn’t know why Sonoko would blame him.
But it was surprisingly nervous just to follow her, without knowing what she wanted to talk about. And even though he was over Ran, he wasn’t in the mood to go through that case all over again. He had done his share already, wasn’t it time to let it go once and for all?
Finally, Sonoko stopped and turned to look at him. Shinichi stopped in front of her and put his hands in his pockets, waiting. It was surprising how Sonoko hadn’t seemed to change at all over five years. Well, maybe she looked a little more mature and used more makeup, but still, she seemed to be the same one as back then.
She opened her mouth, then shut it. Then she took a deep breath and tried again, but let out a sigh. She looked frustrated.
“It’s been five years and you don’t have anything nice to say to me?” Shinichi asked and smiled. “I’m happy that some things never change.”
Sonoko glared at him for a moment. “Kind of wish you would have stayed where you were”, she said. Shinichi let out a laugh. If someone else had said that to him, he would have maybe felt a little bit bad, but since it was Sonoko…
“Well, now I am more than happy that I made that trip”, he said. “This made it worth it.”
“I’m happy to hear that”, she said before straightening herself. “Okay, I’ll go straight to the point, okay?”
“Fine by me”, Shinichi answered.
Sonoko closed her eyes for a moment before taking a deep breath. Then she met his eyes. “Are you sure about your marriage?”
Well, that… he hadn’t waited. Yet, he kept his eyes on Sonoko’s. “I am”, he answered.
“Hundred percent sure?”
“Two hundred percent sure”, he answered.
Sonoko narrowed her eyes. “Like if you could marry anyone you ever want, she would be the one -sure?”
Shinichi let out a sigh and looked away. “You know, if you want to marry me, you could just ask, and I would answer no”, he said and looked at her again. “I’m sure I want to marry Julia, okay?”
“As sure as you were with Ran?”
Shinichi stared at Sonoko, who stared at him back. Why in the world she was worried about his marriage? It wasn’t a surprise that he couldn’t follow Sonoko’s thoughts, because to be honest, Sonoko had always been the kind of girl who didn’t act most of the time like Shinichi would predict. Even though Shinichi had known Sonoko as long as Ran, even though he knew Ran and could predict most of her actions or words, Sonoko was totally another thing. She always seemed to surprise Shinichi with her decisions, and they weren’t always good ones.
But this time he couldn’t even guess what she was after. Not at all.
“Listen”, he started finally. “I loved Ran, I really did, and of course, I thought that we would fix our problems and I would ask her to marry me and we would have got family together. But like you know, things didn’t work out. Things changed”, Shinichi said. “And we moved on…”
“First of all, she didn’t”, Sonoko interrupted.
“She did”, Shinichi objected. “She was the one who was happy and free after our breakup. She was the one who jumped to other relationships like I didn’t matter anymore.” He let out a sigh, trying to keep those memories away. “And I don’t say she did anything wrong, okay? She had thought about it, and she knew she wanted someone else. And I’m happy that she moved on.”
“But she is still single”, Sonoko said.
Shinichi shrugged. “And what could I do for it?”
“She is single because she hasn’t found anyone like you”, Sonoko explained, though, for Shinichi, it didn’t mean anything. “We both know that she could get anyone she ever wanted to. And I believe that the reason why she hasn’t found the one is because she still loves you and wants to be with you.”
He doubted it. “Has she said that herself?” Shinichi still asked.
Sonoko frowned. “No, of course not”, she answered. “But it’s clear.”
“It’s your speculation”, he said. “Who knows, maybe she just hasn’t found anyone who she would like…”
“Yeah, because she is searching for someone who is like you.”
Shinichi let out a laugh. “Nonsense.”
“Besides”, Sonoko continued, totally ignoring him. “The day, after you two met first time after five years, we met after that.”
“Ran said that much”, Shinichi admitted.
“And she was looking sad, she was in her own thoughts. And after I asked, she told me that she met you and that you had a fiancée.”
“Yes, because I introduced them…”
“No, that’s not the point”, Sonoko interrupted. “The point is that she was sad, bothered by it. Because she still loves you and waited that you would come back and you would give her a chance, but then you had fiancée and she was shocked and sad about it.”
He just stared at Sonoko, and he wasn’t sure what to feel. Well, he was sure that what Sonoko said, would explain some things. The day they met first time after five years, he remembered how Ran’s behavior had changed when Julia tried to introduce herself. The day they met in the cafe, he remembered how Ran’s mood had gone down a little bit when he mentioned that Julia wanted to meet her. And the day she and Julia had met, he remembered how Ran had seemed to be a little bit off…
But… It couldn’t be, right?
“Did she say so?” Shinichi asked again. Even though he knew the answer.
Sonoko let out a laugh. “Of course not, you know her”, she answered.
“So again, this is another your speculation”, Shinichi said, feeling a little bit frustrated. “Listen…”
“But you also know that she is a terrible liar”, Sonoko interrupted again. “Come on, if you would have been there, you could have read the same from her face and behavior! It clearly bothered her, and even though she didn’t admit it, it showed that she still loves you and was so disappointed that you have someone else who you are going to marry.”
Shinichi still kept his eyes on Sonoko’s determined eyes, trying to find any kind of clue why Sonoko was doing this, what she was after… Maybe a hint of a lie or… or… something. But she seemed to be sure and spoke the truth.
And it was true that Ran wasn’t a very good liar, but he still wondered… Could she still really love him? He wanted to believe that Ran would have said something, but at the same time, he had known Ran for years, and he also knew that Ran always thought other’s best. Part of him believed that if Ran really had feelings for him, she wouldn’t say anything, because he loved someone else.
Which was a little bit troubling, but…
But wouldn’t he have seen it himself if Ran would have had some feelings for him? Of course, there had been moments where he had seen that something had been wrong with her, but those had been only a few moments. Moments that had been gone, and he had been sure that he had just imagined them. That he was just thinking too much, or… or something.
Ran wouldn’t love him anymore. She made that decision and was sure about that. Nothing would change my mind, she had told him. So where in the world she would have got those feelings back? If she had still loved him, would she have moved on so easily?
But maybe it was Sonoko who hadn’t gotten over them. Sonoko had always been there for them, so maybe their breakup had been more shock to her than to them. And now that Shinichi was back in Tokyo and all, maybe Sonoko had seen some kind of chance and decided to fix things and get them back together like before.
Knowing Sonoko, that wouldn’t surprise him. But things didn’t work like that. She needed to understand that things were different now and even when she meant well, she needed to let go of them.
“You are imagining things, Sonoko”, Shinichi said finally and let out a sigh. “I know you supported us and I’m still grateful, but you know, things changed. And I’m the one who to blame.” He shrugged, trying to move his memories from the past away. This wasn’t the right time to go through them. “Besides, she was the one who started to date others. Believe me when I say: She moved on, okay?”
Sonoko inhaled, and Shinichi knew that it wasn’t a mark to give up. He opened his mouth to interrupt her before she could say anything else, but he wasn’t fast enough.
“And second, you didn’t move on either.”
Shinichi shut his mouth and surprised, stared at Sonoko. She looked at him so determined, so sure… “What are you talking about?” he asked finally and let out a laugh. “I did. I’m over her.”
“No, you don’t.”
“I am.”
“You still love her.”
Shinichi wanted to laugh it off and tell her that she was joking, but somehow he felt irritated and angry. For many reasons, on many levels.
“So”, he said finally. “You believed that I’m faking my love for Julia and going to marry her just for fun?” And even the thought made him boil. He couldn’t believe how Sonoko, from all the people he had known, dared even suggest something like that.
“I don’t say that you wouldn’t love this Julia-san”, Sonoko said, looking a little bit softer. “And to be honest, I don’t even know anything about you and her, but… Come on, if you really love her that much, why you haven’t talked anything about her? Tell anything more than how you met and how you are going to marry her?”
“What else there is to tell?” Shinichi asked frustrated. “No one has asked anything, and I don’t feel like I need to force anyone to listen about my life.”
“But anyone else seemed to be so excited about their own marriage.”
Yeah, Shinichi didn’t deny it, but… “I haven’t met these people in many years”, he claimed. “I don’t expect anyone to be interested anymore in what I am doing or where…”
Sonoko shook her head. “That doesn’t explain anything.”
And I don’t even wait for you to understand, Shinichi wanted to say. He had seen how silent everyone was when he told about his marriage. And he didn’t blame them, because their classmates had believed that he would end up with Ran. And he didn’t want to make a show about it. It was okay and he just wanted to have fun with others like in the old days, not to answer questions about what happened to him and Ran or that people would ask too much about it from Ran. Of course, he wasn’t sure if they had asked about it when he hadn’t been around, but no one had brought it up with him, so he wanted to believe that others understood that something had happened and that’s it.
Of course, he wouldn’t mind telling others what happened, but he preferred to have fun, instead of remembering something that hurt and made him feel sad, regret some things…
“This reunion isn’t about me, okay”, Shinichi said finally, when Sonoko didn’t give up. “We are here together, having fun, right? I’m not here to talk about myself and my fiancée.”
Sonoko hummed and looked like she wasn’t impressed. “Fine then”, she said. “Then explain to me why are you still looking after Ran?”
Shinichi just stared at her. Has he? He hadn’t, and he was sure of it. He hadn’t done anything special towards Ran. Yes, when they met first time, they had hugged. But he didn’t think it to be anything weird: They were still childhood friends, they had gone through so much. After five years, it was only natural, right? Yes, he bought Ran a piece of cake, but there wasn’t any meaning behind it. He had just wanted to be nice and offer something to her because she still was too polite to take anything. And there wasn’t anything special to introduce Julia and Ran to each other. They had wanted it.
There was nothing.
“I’m not looking after her”, Shinichi denied. “I haven’t done anything like that to her. Not today, not days before.”
“You stared at her.”
“I don’t”, Shinichi said.
“You do”, Sonoko insisted. “Hah, and don’t try to deny it! I have seen how every time you look around, you just stop to stare at Ran!”
But he hadn’t! He has just looked around like anyone else has probably done too! Yeah, he knew he had looked at Ran, how she had smiled and laughed with others, but he was pretty sure that he hadn’t stared at her any longer than anyone else.
“I have looked at others too”, Shinichi denied again. “Now you are just imagining things.”
“And why did you get so angry when Iwata-kun asked her out?”
“I wasn’t angry”, he said. “Ran just deserved so much better and we both probably agree with that.”
Sonoko nodded. “Well, true that”, she admitted before her face changed determined again. “But you looked so angry…”
“I didn’t”, Shinichi interrupted.
“And I saw how your hands clenched.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
“But it bothers you, more than you think”, she continued.
“It doesn’t”, he hissed. He started to get enough of this.
Sonoko sighed. “Come on, Kudo! If you only would see how you look at her…”
“I’m not!”
And Shinichi closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Yeah, he had shouted that, much louder than he had thought, but Sonoko was breaking limits. He didn’t remember that Sonoko would have ever succeeded in getting on his nerves like that. But now? She was gone too far, even for him.
“Okay, listen”, he continued when he felt a little bit calmer and opened his eyes to meet hers. “I know you mean well, I really do, but believe me when I say: Ran made her mind long ago. I got over her, and found Julia and fell in love with her”, he said. “So please, don’t interrupt with things that you don’t know.”
“And believe me, I’m not trying to break or destroy anything, okay”, Sonoko said more gently. “I have always wanted the best for both of you. And if you are happy with Julia-san, then I can live with that. But I don’t want you to do anything that you would regret later.”
“Sonoko…”
“If you would only see how you look at her, you would understand…”
“Hey, what's up you two?”
Shinichi felt how something tightened in his heart, but he didn’t move his eyes from Sonoko. It was like she tried to tell him with that one more glance to think about it until she moved her eyes away. Only then did he glance at Ran, who had come closer with her kind smile.
And suddenly he just had the urge to leave. Just… go back to the hotel, sleep, and tomorrow, fly back to America, and continue with his life like before, far from all these people.
“Nothing”, Sonoko answered and offered him a smile before turning back to Ran. “Just wanted to hear myself how our detective geek is doing.”
Ran let out a laugh. “Well, it’s been so long since we have been together like this”, she said. “Just three of us.”
Shinichi turned his head away and closed his eyes for a moment. He felt somehow so angry and frustrated and… and… to be honest, he felt like all his emotions were running so wild. Why in the world did others need to intervene in his life, his decision? Like he didn’t know what he wanted or how he felt? Why everyone needed to…
“Shinichi, are you okay?”
Shinichi felt how something touched his arm. Fast he glanced at Ran who looked at him worriedly.
Fine. That’s what he needed with all the other things.
“Everything is okay”, he answered even when he felt like anyone could have heard how it wasn’t more than a big lie. “Just didn’t remember how tiring it is to spend time with her”, he continued and nodded toward Sonoko.
“Just saying, you are more dryer companion than anyone else in this room”, Sonoko answered. “And most stubborn too, probably.”
Shinichi showed her a toxic glance before turning and going back with the others. He really needed something else to think about right now.

I think Kaito likes Sonoko enough to not try to lead her on so kinda like how he avoids directly interacting with Aoko when he can help it and when he did he just refused to flirt with them both. I think that’s for different reasons though.
I think he noticably pulled back on the flirty Kid behavior not long after she started crushing.
Like it coukd be a coincidence, but i read it as him noticing the crush and going 'oh shit, my bad' and moving into a more platonic behavior pattern- and a prime example of that is when we see Kid and Sonoko actually interacting face to face in Kid Vs Makoto Kyogoku.
She still acts with excitement, and he still talks like as Kid and not Kaito; but at least in what we see she doesn't attempt to flirt with Kid and he doesn't do any thing that could be taken the wrong way himself (he used to often kiss girls hands as Kid, he doesn’t even try this time, though that may be a product of times changing.). And when he eventually talks to Makoto he expresses that Sonoko's heart hadn’t been stolen.
So... I do think they seem to be moving more friendly way, though still with Kaito stuck behind the mask.
Would love for Sonoko to meet Kaito and them to just be fast friends who bond over a mutual appreciation for the dramatic flair of stage magic and the tricks involved. I want a whole story where they bump into each other on the street and after the initial "what the fuck Shinichi, why didn't you tell Ran you were back in Tokyo?" Is cleared up they have a nice talk that evolves into them exchanging cell numbers and being texting buddies.
...
And since you also mentioned him similarly avoiding flirty behaviors with Aoko- which his relationship with her deserves its own whole post, especially considering that depending on how you view timelines and what you take as canon they are dating, which makes things messy.....
But I see a lot of his flirty behavior as being very much performative (which someone else made a post about and drew conclusions that I agree with, linked here), like he's just doing what he feels like is expected of someone his age...
And even with that he doesn't ever flirt with Aoko, he goes out of his way to not even though he's willing to go on what are basically dates with her

Detective Conan Rewatch Episodes 487-490 + OVA 8
Metropolitan police detective love story 8! Okay case is whatever, the victim kinda deserves it tho but the main point of the love stories is naturally Sato and Tagaki and I love them their romance is the funniest while remaining really sweet and can be really heartfelt too. In this case Sato's obliviousness is at max level but that's part of what makes it funny, girls gotta have a weak point somewhere XD and poor Tagaki is just confused. And Yumi meddler she is proves she can't be trusted to have your best interests at heart if your suffering is more entertaining for her XD
The devil at the TV station is... an odd choice for a special? But like the case is pretty good, the howdunnit instead of the whodunnit makes for a nice change when we get it every so often and the trick is a fun one to understand
Courtroom confrontation 3 is... well it's not bad and I like what they were going for definitely with the character arcs and stuff and like I wanna like Eri's court cases cause I like Eri and seeing her in EPs but the courtroom feels a bit bland compared to a deduction show :( Also that man ascended in the funniest way before falling which made it kinda hard to take seriously 😅
Deduction battle on the ski slope!!! It's everything I wanted out of that adaptation!!!! I love the Heiji cases and this one's top tier from the gorgeous animation (that snow!!!) And the case itself being fun, younger teens Heiji and Shiinichi at that interesting point in their lives were they're still learning to be detectives and not fully acknowledged as such by many others so striving to prove themselves (in a way that also (in)conveniently means they can't meet XD) it's really good up there with some of my favourite overall episodes of the whole series.
OVA 8 - casebook of high school detective Suzuki Sonoko. Honestly, I have no idea what to expect going into each OVA and I was honestly not expecting this one to be so funny! I was laughing so hard when the detective boys rescued E.T. it's a really funny, very enjoyable watch

Used to really dislike the moment in The Fist of Blue Sapphire where Makoto destroys a knight’s lance because I thought it was a dumb “Makoto’s jealous of Sonoko’s crush on Kid.” joke. While he is I think it’s more he’s angry at Kid because he is using Sonoko’s desire to be swept off her feet against her not too unlike the man who almost murdered her when they first met. Him feeling envious of Kid because charming ladies is so easy for Kid yet so hard for him. Him feeling inadequate as a boyfriend because Sonoko deserves to be swept off her feet by him the man who loves her. It also forshadows him withdrawing from the tournament he was compared to a knight in his first story and a knight can’t joust without his lance. So I find it a lot sadder & painful now but like the scene and movie more. Already liked it because Sonoko x Makoto is my DCMK otp.
I'll combine all of my answers for the Sonoko x Makoto asks. I love Fist of the Blue Sapphire primarily because of them, second only for Kid (still a bit bitter since we could have had a hint of Aoko in one version they were considering, seriously if he had said that line, "I'm returning this sapphire to you." 'Since I have a better one.' With Aoko's face shadowed, I would have screeched in the cinema). Sonoko was doubly beautiful in that movie (she is a stunner without her headband wow), and I love the development of her relationship with Makoto there.
I do agree with you that Makoto is definitely not an idiot. I doubt any of the DCMK cast are. He's got good instincts and he is just the most adorable sweetheart. I mean Shinichi's a pretty good gentleman himself, but Makoto's got him pretty beat in that department. I agree with you that he's feeling toward Kid is really less about jealousy and more righteous indignantion on Sonoko's behalf because of course for him, Sonoko deserves more than to be duped and used. Seriously, the both of them match each other well! I am still holding onto the hope for a (real) double-date among Shinichi, Ran, Sonoko, and Makoto. I'm sure Makoto would love to hear more stories about Sonoko from her childhood friends. Thanks for the asks!

Just an idea but
How about a “Now You See Me” AU for DCMK?
BTW if anyone has written this already, I’d love to read it – same goes if this post inspires you to write it
Spoiler Warning about “Now You See Me” (2013 movie), obviously
I figure Shinichi and Kaito would be twins in this
Shinichi obviously works for the FBI
And Hattori working with Shinichi for law enforcement
Hakuba could be the Interpol agent
Kaito keeps in the shadows or at least hides his relationship to Shinichi
They are the Fifth Horseman because of Toichi’s death
With Kaito and Shinichi being the instigators, that disqualifies the Gosho Boys as the Four Horsemen
Though both Kaito and Shinichi use identities that disguise their relation to each other and to Toichi
Suzuki Jirokichi could be the rich sponsor, although I’m not entirely happy with that because of the company history being relevant
Kudou Yuusaku could be the man analysing and revealing magician acts; he had no ill intend and would be more rueful about what happened with Toichi;
Yuusaku would honestly regret and mourn what happened with Toichi because they were friends and he didn’t mean to push him to that
Shinichi and Kaito acknowledge that Yuusaku wants to do penance, so they decide not to frame him for everything
Whoever rich bastard is at fault and sponsoring them has it coming though
I’m really annoyed over who would be the horsemen because I feel like Kaito, Hakuba, Masumi deserve that spotlight but I also think Hakuba fits perfectly for Interpol
Sonoko could be an unlikely magician for the Four Horsemen, I think that works
We also always could swap Hakuba for Aoko, so that she’s Miss Interpol (but I just hc Hakuba as an Interpol man, I’m convinced he’d end up there)
Haibara – or maybe Shiho – could also possibly fill out the Horsemen
So Shinichi and Hattori are FBI, Hakuba is Interpol, Kaito under a fake identity is one of the Horsemen (steering the group from within), the remaining three Horsemen could be Masumi, Sonoko, and
Kaito would be the one that “dies” in the high speed chase; obviously
I really really want to stick with Shinichi’s age range, I don’t want to bring Vermouth, Bourbon, or anyone older into this, not even for the washed-up has-been magician
I’m really drawing a blank as to who could/ would be the rich insurance mogul
I had one idea for the sponsor but I need to put that under the cut because it’s a massive spoiler for DCMK if you aren’t caught up
The sponsor could be the Karasuma Group

Note
I just wanna hear your opinion as a fellow amuazu shipper :) since amuazu is my comfort ship and I feel like Rei deserves a sunshine as Azusa in his life to balance out his hasty and dangerous lifestyle and heal his broken and hurt heart …and not forever alone or someone connected to his past etc.
I know ZTT ain’t canon but a setting in a parallel world yet the characteristics are still the same , the parallel world is just mentioned so it won’t overlap with the chronological order of the main main story etc. abut Gosho was the one behind every amuazu content in ztt and closely supervising it lol i mean Gosho‘s Original drafts and corrections at the end of each physical volume are the proof for it. And the biggest shocker was when Gosho wanted the final volume 6 of ZTT to be rearranged and packed it with almost only amuazu content, not to mention the final chapter Lmao literally screams Amuazu doujin lol. So we can be safe in saying Gosho is an amuazu shipper himself, I mean he was the one behind the shopping scene in m22 and even dubbed it as romcom. He brought amuazu to life. Anti’s say every amuazu content is non canon but then we got that Amuro vs. kid chapter in the main canon story where Azusa appeared for the whole case .. and the setting again as romcom .. where not only JK‘s and fan girls noticed Rei and Azusa but this time a well known reoccurring character as Sonoko (who’s always right with her intuitions) teased Azusa if her and Rei are on a date, to which Azusa tried to dismiss as usual to avoid fans getting angry, but Rei told her to not mind .. like what sir ?? So he’s fine if people think he’s dating Azusa ?? Even a main character as Ran supported that suspicion and our little Detective Conan also remarked if a PSB officer has so much free time, not only once. I mean if Poirot is closed then it’s the perfect chance for Rei to take care of BO stuff or PSB work no need to go out of his way and accompany Azusa to the museum, also isn’t it better to keep proper distance and avoid any unnecessary contact to a coworker (if Azusa is really just that to him) while infiltrating a place ? Rei is literally not following the rules lol and I think same as in ZTT when Kazami indicated the same upon noticing how Rei‘s doing unusual stuff with or for Azusa plus even getting along with her bro, if he isn’t doing that subconsciously cuz he enjoys the company of Azusa and her fam, he gets to live a brief moment of a normal life only with Azusa around him. Rei is definitely oblivious or purposely avoiding such thoughts since he always says is to fit into the infiltration place, but always does more than necessary lol. Antis always accuse us as delusional and apply real life logic on DC and amuazu saying a PSB officer won’t ever date a person from a place he infiltrated in .. yeah a PSB officer also won’t risk everything and take illegal measures to receive cooperation of a smart elementary schooler lol they forget everything we got for amuazu to base our assumptions was directly from the creator himself and he never denied the possibility of amuazu lol he even just feeds us with more stuff and is aware of the amuazu ship to mention them alongside the official police couples or during animal crossing game as a hint for the next chapter also during interviews ,SDB or content he himself releases. Not like for Rei‘s other ships where they just have headcanon’s and theories. I respect every ship and their shippers as long as they respect ours as well and mind their own business but these days shippers of ReiShi I don’t wanna generalize but just stating what I experienced, literally force their theories on amuazu Stan’s and stated that Rei is indirectly connected and fated with Shiho due to her mother, that Elena was his first love which was impossible from the get go thus he’s bound to end up with Shiho cuz they are very alike also share similar experiences and he’ll be the only to share stuff about Shiho’s mum to her. Okay and why is it necessary for her to live on ? Also since when does Gosho pair off people who are alike and share same experiences? Never !he always balances out his couples where one had it rough in life or is more closed off/tough and more intelligent and the other is the opposite bright , easy going, cheerful /goofy with no hardship. And the biggest point against them is the huge age gap.
sorry for the wait @angelcherrypie, my pc broke and I had to buy a new one (but I was also broke XD) and I was feeling kinda down.
I'll answer the ask by topics, okay?
let's go!
I agree with you, I think Rei needs someone to balance out his "dark" side. someone that can cheer him up when he is feeling down and I believe Gosho thinks the same. in Super Digest Book 90+ he answered an ask about the type of woman Amuro likes with that: "I think Amuro-san likes intelligent and cheerful women."
2. ZTT, Gosho's stand on the ship and antis
yes ZTT is a spin-off, the events that happen there aren't canon to the main series but as you said Gosho's is directly involved with the manga. the moments amaz got there can't be ignored cause they might reflect their future in the main series.
Gosho seems to like (to tease) the ship, he himself made moments between them, in movie 22, the og manga, the spin-offs, and teases the ship when answering questions about romance in the series.
about antis, I don't care what they say. I've seen too many ship wars to care about them anymore. my approach is completely ignoring their existence and enjoying the things I like.
3. about Rei and Shiho's relationship (and this will be the last time I talk about them):
yes, he's indirectly connected with her because of her mom. he's also connected to Sato, Takagi, Komei, and Chihaya for similar reasons so...
"they are similar/have similar experiences" they can be a little similar but just like you said Gosho likes to balance out the couples.
"he's bound to end up with her because of his "impossible love"~(aka a kid's crush, yep first love but c'mon he was a little kid crushing on an adult married woman, it was a platonic and innocent love) with her mother" that's...kinda weird to me...
"he'll be the only one to talk to her about her mom" isn't Mary her auntie?? the sister of her mother?? and it always comes back to her mom?? damn.
about the age gap, the manga has some couples with an age gap (Yamato x Yui (same gap as amuazu, 6 years), Sonoko's parents I think, and Megure and his wife that I don't have an idea of how much it is, is it over or under 10 years? ), so I think if Gosho wanted them to be together he would do it regardless of the age gap (but he also could've made her age closer to Rei's if it was the plan, they have a gap of 11 years, he made her age closer to Shinichi's and even Higo's and that was a choice).
To end this matter, here's what I think their relationship will be like: the same one she has with Akai. both are indirectly connected to her because she's related to someone dear to them. just like Akai, he'll be one of her protectors.
I hope these answers satisfied you and my advice is to ignore antis, and just enjoy what you like.

It's Pretty Obvious Which Face Is More Suitable For An Idol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think the most incomprehensible and extraordinary thing in the history of not only Onyanko Club, but idols in general, is the fact that from the summer of 1985 to the summer of 1986, Nitta Eri became extremely popular that she overwhelmingly outshone all the other members of Onyanko Club.(OnyankoC P50-51)(Geinōkai P86) It was absolutely insane that such a lowly bitch became overwhelmingly popular nationwide.(OnyankoC P50-51)(Geinōkai P86) To me, she was a haniwa face girl who didn't have anything special about her, and I definitely don't think she was the kind of idol that deserved it.(OnyankoC P50-51) She was only a carpenter's daughter.(Geinōkai P86) It was nothing short of extremely criminal absurdity that a fucking bitch like Nitta became the most popular idol thanks to the title of Onyanko Club.(Geinōkai P82-83) The psychological state of the elementary, junior high, and high school students who fell in love with Nitta at the time is probably one of the most baffling and lunatic things in the history of idols.(OnyankoC P50-51) Even though the girls of Onyanko Club were basically fugly, there were relatively beautiful girls like Kawai Sonoko, Takai Mamiko, and Kokushō Sayuri from the very early days.(OnyankoC P22,35,52) Nevertheless, the popularity was concentrated on Nitta, whose face was way too far from beautiful.(OnyankoC P18)(Geinōkai P86) It's possible to say that it's almost impossible for human beings to fathom out this extraordinary insane phenomenon. Anyway, as they used to be enthusiastic fans of Nitta, they should be held historically accountable for making her up to a position that she didn't at all deserve, even if it was only for a brief period of time.(OnyankoC P50-51)
Among approximately 50,000 high school girls who were in their senior year of high school in Saitama Prefecture at the time, in terms of looks, Yoshino Kayoko may have had a certain chance of being in the top 20. On the other hand, no matter how favorably you look at Nitta, I'm pretty sure she wasn't even in the top 2000. It's an undeniable fact that Yoshino was far more beautiful and cute than Nitta, and it's absolutely unacceptable to deny the fact. Yoshino's cheerfulness must have come from her confidence in her own good looks. There was no doubt that Tomoda Mamiko was also beautiful among the Onyanko Club members. She didn't have the girlish cuteness such as Kawai Sonoko, though. Anyway, the Onyanko craze was an incredibly abnormal phenomenon, as evidenced by the fact that Nitta, who was essentially a third-rate bitch who didn't deserve to be discussed at all, so brazenly rose to the top.(OnyankoC P50-51)(Geinōkai P82) I feel extremely strongly that the best way for Onyanko Club, or any popular idol group in general, is to have beautiful girls like Yoshino and Tomoda as the main characters, and low quality girls like Nitta and her ilk as the supporting characters.
When the five girls of the smoking group got fired, they must never have imagined that Onyanko Club would become overwhelmingly popular.(Geinōkai P84) However, seeing Onyanko Club become overwhelmingly popular over time must have given the girls an inexpressible feeling of regret.(Gorō86 P22-23) Okuda Mika and Enokida Michiko were probably the ones who seem to have had the strongest hearts and the most guts among the smoking group members.(Gorō86 P22-23)(TV Enokida) Tomoda Mamiko and Satō Mayumi don't seem to have had such soft characters either.(Sponichi)(2ch1 859) Therefore, I think that Yoshino Kayoko was clearly the most vulnerable in this respect. Such being the case, the dismissal itself must have been quite a shock to her. What was more shocking, however, was probably the fact that a fugly girl like Nitta Eri, who could in no way be described as beautiful by any stretch of the imagination, attracted a tremendous amount of attention from the general public as the most popular Onyanko girl.(OnyankoC P18)(Geinōkai P86) Both Yoshino and Nitta were in their senior year of high school when they started out as the original members of the group, and where they lived were relatively close to each other in Dasaitama.(DUNK85 P82) From Yoshino's point of view, it must have been completely unimaginable when the program first started that Nitta, who was obviously far lower rank than her, would become overwhelmingly popular.(OnyankoC P50-51)(2ch1 859) Furthermore, she would have thought that she was far more beautiful and cute than Nitta and that she deserved to be an idol. As Yoshino's feelings could be overwhelmingly justified, her regret must have been immeasurable. There must have been more than a few students around her at her high school who felt the same way, and some of them might have even dared to tell her about it. On the surface, she would have responded to that by feigning calmness. However, she must have felt an indescribable irritation in her heart. In addition, she must have been overwhelmed with a sense of powerlessness over the fact that she became nothing more than a high school girl.
Enokida continued to watch the program after she was fired, and she liked Gomioka Tamaki, who was a member of Onyanko Club for only two months.(Kamifukuoka 142144) On the other hand, Okuda even said that she was so frustrated for a year after she was fired that she couldn't watch it.(Gorō86 P22-23) Even the brusque Okuda couldn't bear to watch the program, so Yoshino must have been even more frustrated and unable to watch it.(Gorō86 P22-23) When it comes to Gomioka, it's possible that she didn't even notice Gomioka's existence unless she was watching the program. On the other hand, whether she was watching the program or not, if she was living a normal high school life, there was no way she wouldn't have realized that Nitta became very popular.(OnyankoC P18)(Geinōkai P86) So, for Yoshino, a very depressing and disgusting situation must have continued until she graduated from high school. Of course, outwardly, she didn't show such an attitude at all, and probably behaved just as cheerfully as before. So, if it's true that she refused to give permission for the Onyanko Club DVDs, that's obviously the reason. It'd also be a clear indication that this is not a problem that time can simply solve. It's possible that Yoshino's past involvement in Onyanko Club is just a dark, stagnant, and unpleasant memory that she hesitates to even remember and would like to keep sealed away forever if she could. Like Tomoda and Enokida who appeared in the press several times, Yoshino could have expressed her true feelings if she wanted to.(Sponichi)(TV Enokida) However, the fact that she hasn't made any such move may be a sign of her strong will to stay away from anything related to Onyanko Club.
By the way, Nitta bragged in a magazine that she and other Onyanko members including her best friend, Nakajima Miharu, drank beer every night during the Onyanko Club tour.(BOMB90 P39) Furthermore, Nitta seems to have told on several TV programs that she also smoked during her Onyanko Club days, and that she even cohabited with a guy despite being a very popular idol.(Board)(One) After all, anything goes as long as the wrongdoings ain't publicly exposed. Like Kihara Aki, who was at the scene of the smoking but was acquitted because of her connections with the upper echelons of the TV station, these can only be described as a monstrous absurdity.(2ch1 873)(2ch1 886) Other idol groups might be the same, but Onyanko Club had many DQN-esque girls, especially the early members.(Note that the slang term DQN means a person who behave in an insane and thoughtless manner. He or she has no decency and class in appearance, word or deed. DQN can also be used to describe the insane and thoughtless behavior itself.) Nevertheless, they were divided into those who were punished and those who were not. History has always not treated people equally. And only those who got away with it or were to the point have been given the honor of being in the spotlight. This is probably a common phenomenon in many fields in the world.

There’s Nothing Triangle About It
Summary: Hate to break it to you, but this isn’t a love triangle. If anything it’s an arrow and he never saw it coming.
“You’re really not mad? Not even a little?”
“What’s there to be mad about?”
“But it’s not fair to you Ran! You waited all this time and now he’s back, so why can’t you two just go live your happily ever after! Why did you break up!”
“You’re right Sonoko, it’s not fair to me. It’s not fair that I have to stick with someone who clearly doesn’t love me anymore. I deserve better.”
“Yes, you do, but… you’re really okay with this? Clichés are fun and all, but a love triangle is too much.”
“But it’s not a triangle.”
“Huh?”
“For it to be a triangle he would have to be conflicted over who to choose.”
“He is, I mean sure you two broke up, but he can’t just let you go.”
“But he has. Come on Sonoko, you can’t tell me you don’t see it too. He loves her. You can’t compete with someone who went through a life and death experience… someone who saved your life countless amount of times, someone who was there with you every step of the way, someone who understands you and isn’t just tolerating your overexcitement about things I have no interest in. They’re better suited for each other and it shows in his actions. He loves her and only her, so no this isn’t a love triangle.”
“… but Ran…”
“I’m okay, really. Besides, now I finally get to see why you always find it so entertaining to tease me about Shinichi. I get to do it to him now.”
“If you’re really over it…”
“I am.”
“Then he’s got his work cut out for him. She won’t even give him the time of day right now.”
“I know, but it’s kinda funny to watch, don’t you think?”
“I hope she makes him suffer.”
“I think she’ll get along fine with us.”
~~~
“So it’s really over? You two broke up, just like that?”
“It’s been three months since we broke up, why do you keep bringing it up?”
“Because I can’t believe it! You went through all this trouble! Sure you guys were official for a year and change, but you didn’t really get to experience actually dating and being together.”
“She said the same thing, but she also said we’re too different and I agree.”
“So that’s it? You’re not even a little heartbroken?”
“What do you want my answer to be Hattori?”
“Is it because of her?”
“Who’s her?”
“Don’t play dumb with me Kudo. You know I’m talking about Miyano.”
“She doesn’t have anything to do with this…”
“You and your flair with dramatics, of course you have to be involved in a love triangle too.”
“Wait, hold on. It’s not a triangle.”
“What? Of course it is…”
“For it to be a triangle, she has to like me too.”
“Of course she… wait! Too! So you admit you like her!”
“… yeah… I do… a lot.”
“What are you doing here then! Go tell her!”
“You think I haven’t tried! She won’t let me! I barely get to see her anymore and every time I get her alone she somehow manages to slip away.”
“I might be able to help with that.”
“How?”
“I’m supposed to be meeting her for coffee in about three hours, you could…”
“Done. It’s settled, I’m going to confess to her if it’s the last thing I do.”
“That’s a bit much… you must really like her. Huh, guess I should’ve seen that coming.”
~~~
“You’re not even a little touched that he would go through all this trouble for you Shiho-chan?”
“He’s wasting his time, and you can tell him that too when he shows up. I’m leaving.”
“Is he supposed to be here? Am I going to interrupt a moment? Really? Here? No wonder you won’t accept his confession. He’s not very good at this whole romance thing is he?”
“You’re stalling Kuroba.”
“I’m not, leave if you want, I’ll just follow you. It’s lunch time anyways, you shouldn’t skip your meals. Let’s go!”
“… so he’s not coming then…”
“I knew it, you wanted him to be here! Just let him confess to you, then the love triangle can finally end.”
“Woah, hold on, what love triangle? I’m not involved in a love triangle with him.”
“Well I guess not anymore? It’s more like an arrow at this point.”
“An arrow?”
“Yep, he keeps aiming for your heart but you keep pushing him away. So yeah, it’s an arrow. He’s the only one showing any signs of affection, you’re not reciprocating it. Which leads me to this… why aren’t you reciprocating it? You like him too.”
“I don’t like him.”
“You’re not a very good liar.”
“Kuroba-kun… do you really not know my feelings for you…”
“… Holy what!”
“And you said I’m not a good liar.”
“Wait! That’s not funny! Come back here!”
~~~
“So when were you planning on telling me we’re in a love triangle situation? Actually, apparently it’s more like an arrow.”
“Well if you would stop playing hard to get and let me tell everyone we’re together then maybe all these rumors would stop.”
“Hm… I don’t know, I kinda like the idea that you’re hopelessly pinning after me.”
“Yeah, yeah I am.”
“You’re not even going to deny it?”
“Why would I? It’s true.”
“… it’s not hopeless.”
“I know.”
I need to know your dc scrunkly and blorbo and eeby deeby and such 😩😩😩
LOL ask and ye shall receive!!
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) -- Haibara <3. I still think her existence is maybe one of the best things to happen to detective conan. Her introduction literally gave me chills. She really balances out the narrative in a delightful way, that she can be equals with conan without a towering and idiotic sense of arrogance lol. I feel like she's one of the few characters who got character development that wasn't really centered around romance, so that might also be why. also she is transfem, but simultaneously she is also transmasc, hope this helps
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) -- LOL probably Shinichi/Conan??? you HAVE to admit that Conan is super super shaped. it's so funny. he really is just a first-grader. he is just a little guy !!!
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) -- Heiji. I'm honestly soooo sad that he got tossed to the wayside in the second half of the series :(((. In favor of what?? the akai family??? who give a shit !!!!!!! I love my boy and he deserves more screen time!! I want to see him solve cases bisexually like a king!!!! I need more stupid kudo moments!! *bites at the bars of my cage FREE MY BOY
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) -- idk if this counts but Ran and Kazuha. like Ran in a scene? I sleep. Kazuha in a scene? I sleep. RAN AND KAZUHA IN THE SAME SCENE THOUGH??? IM FUCKING AWAKE, BABEY !!!! I think this happens rarely enough that it counts as an obscure fave, although I know it's more of a ship than a character.
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) -- TAKAGI LOL. (I am evaluating this based on the "otherwise pathetic" qualifier) Love that son of a bitch. his brain is sooo empty but by god he's doin his best. love this guy. that elevator debombing scene was excellent, and so was that case where he just wakes up tied to a board with a bomb and just has to lay there while everyone tries to figure out how to save him without killing him. it's SOOO funny. he really is the wettest most pathetic looking guy from the series. truly my poor little meow meow.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) -- Kaito. But I do this in a loving way, he needs that character development. my boy needs to suffer the consequences of his hubris. I guarantee he will return a stronger man
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) -- fucking. Eisuke Hondou. I still haven't forgiven him for his homophobia moment in the karaoke case, he can burn in superhell. he could have been the femboy star of dcmk but noooo he has to be fucking home of phobic. Makoto is a close contender, though. "he's traditional" no he's not he's fucking misogynistic. let sonoko be, bestie. if she wants to wear a cute crop top you don't get to say that she's a slut!!! get a life
Last anon made me curious now... who do you think is stronger emotionally? (Between Kaito and Shinichi) I think it's Shinichi because the stuff he has gone through is a lot worse than Kaitos, even though Kaito isn't having a walk in the park either.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF dude, okay. Now, here I’m gonna have to agree with you on this one.
Don’t get me wrong. Kaito is incredibly strong. He had to deal with his father’s death when he was little, now his mom is... almost constantly out of the picture. He has it difficult. And here’s the thing- he actually strikes me as more of a lonely person than Shinichi does. I know, most people would scream at me because WHAT? HAPPY CHEERY KAITO??? SOCIAL BUTTERFLY KAITO WHO IS ALWAYS CRACKING JOKES AND PRANKING PEOPLE “LONELY”? YOU CRAZY??? Well I just- don’t think Kaito is as happy and cheery as he pretends to be. And I definitely don’t think he’s as social as he’s portrayed to be most of the time in fanon.
Canon Kaito has Jii as his only connoisseur, the ONLY person who knows he’s Kid and who he can talk to freely (Hakuba doesn’t count because Kaito hasn’t admitted it and they don’t share things, at least not from Kaito’s side, willingly). He has Aoko, that’s true. He has Nakamori, who actually likes him. But I’m sorry, I don’t think Kaito considers neither Akako nor Hakuba his friends, at least not for now. (NOT TO SAY THAT I DON’T ENJOY WHAT FANON HAS DONE TO EXPLORE THEIR DYNAMICS PEOPLE, I LOVE THE EKODA GANG, THEY COOL).
He’s suffering because he’s pursuing something that he’s not even sure exists, and he’s all alone doing something that he mostly doesn’t want to do, he’s commiting crimes, he could go to prison, his life could go to shit if he screws it, and it’s all because of his father, who has... btw, taught him some ways that are incredibly harmful emotionally (the whole poker face thing seems really hurtful to me, and I think we can all agree on that). And don’t even get me started on the whole Toichi might be alive thing because I WILL lose it. Kaito definitely doesn’t deserve that, and for a manga that’s supposed to be more lighthearted it would be an incredibly dark twist, I don’t even know how Kaito would possibly react to something like that being true and it honestly scares me. Kaito does not deserve that at all, and I think I’d rather have Toichi stay dead.
Kaito has to be able to move on eventually, leave the whole Kid thing behind so he can start to be truly open and honest with Aoko, because up until then... I’m not sure if he would be emotionally mature enough or prepared enough to be able to be in a serious relationship with her. Which is one of the main reasons why I will always stay on the “Kaito has to find Pandora soon and then quit being Kid” part of the fandom. I’m not sure if it’s a popular opinion or not, but I’ve definitely seen some saying that Kaito should keep doing heists after the Pandora thing is resolved, and I can’t say that that would sit right with me?
But here’s the thing. At least Kaito has some stability in his life atm. He has calm between the storms. He has a normal life to go back to after dropping the Kid cape. He has his own body. He chose to be doing what he’s doing. And he’s aware of all dangers and possibilities. He knows the risks and he accepted them by putting on the Kid costume. But Shinichi... Shinichi doesn’t have any of that.
Shinichi’s life was taken from him because of his good intentions. He made ONE mistake, and now all of his life is gone. His stability and everyday life was stolen because he was too eager, too innocent, too curious to see the danger ahead of him. He didn’t deserve to have that happen to him. The experience of that night would be traumatic on its own to most. The pain he had to endure, all of it- He thought he was going to die. He should’ve died. But he didn’t, and now he has to put up an act all day, everyday, 24/7, from the moment he gets up to the moment he goes back to sleep.
And yes, Shinichi strikes me as more social, which goes along with the fact that more people know his secret than Kaito’s (and he has more people to share his thoughts with, Heiji on his own is a pretty important anchor for Shinichi’s emotional stability). But you can also see that it also causes him incredible pain. He misses his life so much, he misses Ran (because even if he sees her everyday, it’s not as himself, it’s not Shinichi who she’s talking to or looking at), he misses Sonoko (fight me on this), he misses his friends at school, he misses his house, and he misses his body. Shinichi was stolen of EVERYTHING he had quite literally. And he’s learning an incredibly hard lesson through that. He goes through his days knowing that the slightest slip up will get him and everyone he loves killed. He knows the consequences of his actions now, and it’s scary as fuck.
They are both so strong, I could never, the stress and pression alone would make most people crumble. But they don’t, at least for now. We’ll see how that holds up. But my vote goes to Shinichi here.
It Has Always Been You, Chapter 2
Shinichi is back in Japan after five years, meaning to take a part in class reunion. Ran happens to meet him by chance, feeling happy to see him again, seeing that he is the exact same man that she had been in love with. Nothing has changed.
Except that he has a fiancee...
A/N: Wow, I have been away... well, around two months, and Tumbrl has changed so much that I almost didn't know how to navigate here xD
But yeah, here is the second chapter. Maybe I save you from my ramblings, and let you guys see what you like about this second chapter ^^ I also hope you all have been well ❤
Chapter 1
Chapter 2: Regrets
He has a fiancee. A nice-looking one. Shining blonde hair, those weird, amber-colored eyes which looked so beautiful and bright under the sun, a little darker skin tone than hers… She looked so energetic, happy, and lovely, she… she…
She was his… fiancee…
“Ran!”
“Yeah?” Ran asked and raised her head. Sonoko looked at her, a little annoyed like she had waited for her attention sometime now. Ran tried to stop herself from frowning, even though she wondered if she had really fallen too deep into her thoughts. She didn’t think so, but she hadn’t heard Sonoko talking to her at all, so…
“What did you say?” Ran asked when Sonoko didn’t say anything. After leering at her for a moment, Sonoko’s expression softened. She looked a little bit worried when she tilted her head.
“Is something wrong?”
Ran frowned. “No”, she answered and smiled. “Why?”
“I feel like your thoughts are somewhere else than with me.”
Really? Ran didn’t want to believe it, but then again, this had been something that had been on her mind during the last hour and a half. Sonoko was right to be worried, but… But.
So Ran let out a laugh, trying to move it aside. “It’s nothing.”
“Are you sure?”
Ran nodded. She met Sonoko’s bluish eyes staring before she closed her eyes and shook her head. “No hard feelings, Ran, but it shows from you that something bothers you. You can’t hide it from me.”
Ran smiled at her best friend before lowering her eyes back to her latte. It wasn’t like she couldn’t trust Sonoko, but she really wanted to avoid this discussion because she knew already where it would go. In the end, she was the one…
But then again, she couldn’t lie. If it really showed on her face, Sonoko wouldn’t give up, and maybe it would make her feel better when she would let it out of her mind.
So, she smiled wistfully, still looking at that latte. “He is here”, she said finally.
“He?” Sonoko repeated, sounding confused. “Who?”
Ran gathered herself for a moment before raising her eyes back to Sonoko. “Shinichi.”
“Oh, really?” Sonoko asked, looking surprised. “Wow, so Nakamichi really got in touch with him. I thought he was just lying…”
Ran frowned. “What? You knew?”
Sonoko shrugged. “I thought he was just making it up”, she answered like it wasn’t a big deal at all and sipped from her latte before continuing: “Besides, I remember you saying that you don’t want to hear about him.”
And there it came. That line she knew Sonoko would say to her. And even though she knew that she deserved it, it felt a little unfair.
After she and Shinichi broke up, Sonoko had been shocked. It had taken some time before Sonoko had stopped being worried about her and believed when Ran had said that they were over for good. But after that, when Sonoko finally believed that she really was fine, she started to be worried about Shinichi. She asked him every time they met, like how he was doing and whether had they talked to each other. And after some time, she started to tell her how broken he looked, how they should talk more, how they were meant to be… Even though Ran told her that they were okay, they broke up as a friend, and to her, Shinichi seemed to be okay, Sonoko didn’t give up.
And finally, Ran had gotten enough. She remember how she finally snapped at her, telling her that they weren’t meant to be, they were over, they were still friends and she doesn’t want to hear anything about Shinichi anymore, because she just doesn’t care!
That had been a lie. And even back then, she knew that she had been unfair and harsh. Because she knew, deep down, that Sonoko had just wanted her best, being worried. And since she and Shinichi were also friends, she probably had been worried about Shinichi too. And Sonoko had always believed in them. She had been there, seeing them grow up together. She had seen how much they cared for each other, she had supported them more than anyone else, she… She had believed that if there were soulmates, Shinichi and Ran were proof of it. She had believed that they were meant to be, that nothing couldn’t break them.
Once a upon time, Ran had believed in that too.
She really had. Shinichi had been everything she had loved. He had been the one who she had trusted, the one who she knew she could lean on, he had been the one she… she…
But then Conan and the Black Organisation happened. And even though she had been grateful that Shinichi was back and safe, she had been shocked at the fact that all that time he had been under her nose, lying to her and her father, using her father to solve cases… And even though she had loved him, she had needed the time. What else she could have done? She was angry and felt betrayed. He hadn’t trusted her enough to tell her, not even though she had always been there for him and supported him all she could. Who knew how much more he had lied to her? And he had used her father… It had been something that Ran couldn’t accept. It hadn’t been something that her Shinichi would do, and yet, there he had been, using her father as pleased…
But she had got over it - at least she had thought so, and told Shinichi that they should try to date again. In the end, she still loved him and she hadn’t been ready to give up, not just… yet.
But suspicion and lack of confidence followed her and their relationship. Every time Shinichi was away, she was always wondering if he was just lying to her, maybe he really was cheating on her. With every word he said, Ran felt like she was just searching for lies. Everything reminded her of Conan -case and she felt like she couldn’t gain back the same trust that she had had before.
As much as she loved him, she couldn’t get over it.
So she had made that hard decision.
But back then, it had felt to be the right one. Back then it had taken so much of her energy and dating him hadn’t been worth it, not even though she still loved him. And to be honest… She had felt free after the breakup. Free and lighter.
Now she regretted it. More than anything. God, right now she regretted so many things.
“So, I take it that you saw him?”
Ran hummed. “We met”, she said and raised her head to look at Sonoko. “He…” She shut her mouth, unsure if she really should admit it to Sonoko. He had looked as handsome as always. Those beautiful, glimmering blue eyes had brightened when seeing her. That laugh had been music in her ears, let alone hearing his voice, talking to her like he had used to… He had that same scent that she had used to know, his arms were still the warmest and safest place, feeling like… like…
And then that American woman had come and dropped the bomb.
A fiancee.
“Did he say something stupid?”
“What?” Ran asked, concentrating back on Sonoko, who observed her worriedly. “Oh, no, no”, she answered and laughed. “Of course not…”
“So you hoped he wouldn’t have come back at all?”
Ran frowned. “Why would I wish something like that?” she asked. “We are childhood friends, we have gone through so much. And in the end, he has all the right to come and go as he pleases. Besides…” She took a break, lowering her eyes like she had done something bad and didn’t want to admit it. “It was me who approached him, so…”
There was silence. And the longer it took, the heavier it started to feel. God, she knew that Sonoko would make her pay for that.
“So…” Sonoko started slowly. “Then, what is it?”
Ran stared at her latte intensively. She wondered if she should keep it herself, but…
“Did you know he has a fiancee?” she asked finally, holding her tears. God, this was so stupid, she knew it, but she couldn’t…
“He has?”
Ran closed her eyes for a moment before raising her head and looking at Sonoko, meeting her reaction. And to her surprise, Sonoko didn’t seem to be interested in the news. She had always been the one who was interested to hear the newest gossip, always ready to find out more. But this? This didn’t seem to interest her at all.
And it made Ran feel worse.
“You knew”, she said finally, hoping that she wouldn’t sound too accusatory.
“I didn’t”, Sonoko answered, taking again a sip from her latte before continuing with a voice that had a little hint of toxic. “But you’re not interested in Kudo-kun anymore, so I don’t know why it would bother you.”
It made Ran’s heart crack a little bit. Yeah, she knew she deserved this, after how harshly she had told Sonoko to not mention Shinichi anymore. She had tried to make her stop in a nicer way, but God, Sonoko hadn’t understood and stopped…
But the worst part was that she wasn’t in the mood to take all those bites back right now. She had just wanted to talk with someone who would offer her even a little bit more emphatic, but even though she knew she deserved everything that Sonoko gave her back, it still didn’t make her feel any better. Maybe she should have kept her mouth shut in the first place. She should have known that Sonoko wasn’t going to give her a warm hug and conform.
But it couldn’t be helped. She had started it already. All she could do right now was to take all Sonoko has to offer and live with it. And maybe it was something that she should try to make up with Sonoko. In the end, she never apologized for it…
“Except it seems to bother you.”
Ran let out a sigh. “I’m just surprised”, she said instead of admitting anything and tried to smile, though when she looked at Sonoko, she was sure that it didn’t look as assured as she had hoped. “I mean he is a detective geek! Cases are always following him. Who in the world would like to marry him?” She laughed. “Can you imagine?”
“Well, probably someone since he has a fiancee”, Sonoko said blankly, making Ran’s heart sink a little bit more.
Yeah, Shinichi had always been popular among girls. Of course, he would get anyone he just liked to…
“Oh, Ran”, she heard Sonoko sigh. “What did you wait to happen? That after - what? Five years? He would come back as a single, still ready to marry you? After you break up with him?”
Ran lowered her eyes to her latte, probably unveiling the truth that she still liked him. Loved him.
No, she had no idea what she had waited for. From the start, even though Sonoko had tried to point out that they were meant to be, she had believed that they weren’t. But they had been still friends, at least at that time, Ran had believed they were okay even after the breakup.
She had been wrong, to be honest. They should have talked about it more. If not because of him, but because of her. Because after a few years, many things had come back to haunt her.
But back then, she had believed that everything was okay. She moved on and started to date others. And even though some of them were good, none of them hadn’t worked out well enough. Some of them lasted a little longer than others, but she had still always ended up as a single.
And after a few years, she realized the reason: She was just looking for someone like him. Someone who would be reliable, righteous, brave, and make her feel safe… Someone who would show her his love and it would feel special - like they mean it. Someone who just… knows her. Better than anyone else.
But the truth was, there was only one Kudo Shinichi. And as much as Ran had tried to deny it, she had realized that she still loved him. And maybe somewhere deep down she had again started to believe that she and Shinichi was meant to be, that maybe one day she would find Shinichi again, and maybe he would still give her a chance to try again one more time.
But it seems that it was too late for her. Shinichi had moved on and found someone else. She had lost her chances, and she couldn’t blame anyone else than herself for that.
Hah, what she had even thought? Like, if she would just wait patiently and nicely one more time, he would have come back to her life and be ready to be with her again.
Well, that had probably been what she had hoped for. That one more time, she could just wait, and he would come back to her. God, she was the reason why they breakup in the first place! And before that, she had been the reason why they got a break from dating after the Black Organisation. He had maybe made her wait for his return, but she had made him wait for her to deal with everything he had told about the Conan period. Like she could make him wait forever if she would want him or not.
Well, he probably would have waited an eternity if she would have just asked.
“I didn’t”, she answered finally. Like she could admit to it to Sonoko how foolish she was right now. In the end, it was what life was. You made decisions and sometimes they are good and some of them you are going to regret later. “It’s just… came out as a surprise for me.”
There was another silence. A silence during Ran was sure that Sonoko would expose her, pity her, tell how foolish she was, or…
“Does he still live in Japan?”
“No”, Ran answered, stirring her latte. “He lives in America, with that woman…” she continued and took a sip from it.
“So he had come for a class reunion”, Sonoko summed up. “Maybe we should skip it…”
It made Ran almost choke on her latte. After she swallowed it, she cough to clear her throat. “What?” Ran asked finally, taking a napkin and wiping her mouth. “Why?”
“So you don’t have to meet him”, Sonoko explained. “At least I can’t tell him not to come, not after he had traveled here for that. And after that, when he had left, you can live in peace again…”
Even the thought made Ran feel sad. She had waited for the class reunion, she had waited to see everyone after so many years, and she had… hoped to see him too. Yeah, sure, now it would hurt her, she was sure of it, but she would give anything to have a chance to live even for a moment from her high school years and have Shinichi in it...
Love was so complicated.
“Don’t be a fool”, Ran laughed. “Of course, we are going! I want to meet everyone…”
“But Ran…”
“Don’t worry, it’s going to be alright”, she assumed. “As you said, I was the one who broke up, and in the end, it isn’t going to be more than one evening.”
Summary:
“We’re not leaving you,” Ran says with determination.
“You’re stuck with us,” Shinichi snorts.
And Sonoko? Sonoko wants to cry. She just wants to stay with them, like this. Forever.
.
.
.
Twelve.
It is warm inside the Suzuki residence. Feeling extremely bored, the young Suzuki suddenly decides to do an activity which involves water guns. Having already done their homework and revisions, and with watching TV mindlessly boring her, she just feels like doing something physical. So Sonoko convinces Ran to play, and they wear swimming costumes under casual clothes so as not to catch a cold before grabbing their water guns. It has been thirty minutes since then.
However, there is something missing from this scenario. She ponders the thought. What is it?
It feels like there is someone missing from this group… Ah, yes. Shinichi! She’d forgotten!
She turns around to see Shinichi sitting on a bench, reading another mystery novel that he had borrowed from their library, having already refused to join in on their activities.
Why is he reading that book and not joining in?
Ah yes, because that little brat has ‘better things to do than get himself drenched in cold water from a fake gun’. His words, not hers. Sonoko is annoyed. Very, very annoyed.
So when she impulsively decides to forcibly bring him into the ‘pointless’ activity with herself and Ran, the world need not blame her.
She shushes Ran, then slowly and sneakily walks towards the wannabe detective who is looking at the back of the book with a contemplative expression, and when she arrives at the destination, she raises her hand up, pointing towards him. Barely holding in a giggle, she pulls the trigger.
SPLAAASH!
“UWAAH!”
A steady fountain of water lands on his head, wetting his hair and splattering onto his clothes, a few touching the book. Ah well, it’s on the back, so it’s going to be readable. Even if it isn’t, her library has one or two extra copies, so it’s fine. He still instinctively puts the book out of the way while shielding his face, so there. A few more seconds, and she stops.
A long silence.
Shinichi is the one who breaks it. He puts his arm down, gawks at her. His mouth opens and closes like a gaping fish. “Did you—” he clears his throat. “Did you just splash water on me?”
“Yup, I did!” she says cheekily, popping the ‘p’.
Somewhere in the background, she hears soft, suppressed laughter at the display.
“...” He looks down, his wet hair covering his eyes. “What the hell?” Sonoko remains silent, not gracing him with an answer just yet. “What the hell are you doing, Sonoko?”
She raises her eyebrow. “Playing water guns. What else am I doing?”
“Well then,” Shinichi’s voice is low, “riddle me this. I have not done anything to you today or ever. I didn’t want to come here but you dragged me here anyway so I borrowed this book and left both of you alone to play whatever it is you like to play with. But then you came sneaking on me, involved me in your game without warning, and ruined a perfectly written novel. So tell me…” His head raises ever so slightly, giving her a glare. “What did I ever do to deserve this kind of treatment?”
Having been around him for long enough to be immune to his glares, Sonoko just deadpans and gives him a glare of her own. “Oh, you’ve done plenty. First of all, you’re boring. Second of all, you left us alone and read whatever that is in your own solitude. I don’t know what the heck is up with that. Third of all, I dragged you here for a reason. And finally, that book is still intact. It isn’t the end of the world if a few droplets just happened to land on that book. Oh, and did I forget to mention that you’re boring?”
“Oh, am I?” He slowly stands up from the bench, still glaring at her. “And what do you want me to do about that, oh gracious heiress?” The last lines are dripping with sarcasm.
“You’re forgetting,” Sonoko drawls as she steps backwards a little, the corners of her lips twitching up, “about the fact that it’s currently the winter holiday, we’re 12, in middle school, we’re still young, and we have perfectly logical reasons to partake in fun activities like this one?”
His eyebrow raises into his hairline, tone curious despite the glare intensifying. “Oh? I didn’t know that you knew such big words.”
“You’re the one to blame. I’ve been infected with your loquacity.”
“Ah, thank you for the compliment, Your Graciousness.”
Sonoko’s eyebrow twitches. “The hell’s with that?”
He skillfully ignores her. “So…?”
She deadpans at him and just sighs as she raises the hand holding the gun, pointing at him. “So, a little bird told me that you’ve learned how to shoot with your dad in the middle of nowhere?” Shinichi’s stare is all the answer she gets. “Won’t you show me those lame skills of yours?” And before he can reply, Sonoko immediately pulls the trigger.
SPLAAASH!
Cold water hits his head, splashing droplets everywhere. Once again, he raises his hand to shield his face. And once again, silence.
“Oh. You actually want to do this? Fine.” Shinichi mutters as he lowers his arm, his glare at Sonoko intensifying once more. His lips curl into a smirk, his teeth showing. For once, Sonoko feels a tiny bit of fear growing from her being, but she skillfully rids herself of it. “Let’s play.”
For the entirety of his 20 years of existence, Kudo Shinichi finds himself in one of the most difficult situations.
Everything was going so smoothly. He already had enough clues to figure out who the suspect was. All he needed was evidence to prove his surmises. It was all according to his plans.
Not until the suspect kidnapped Ran.
He should have seen that coming. After all, when the Conan incident ended with his name plastered all over Japanese Television for defeating one of the most notorious criminal organizations in the world, stuff like this happened afterwards.
If they can't target him to shut him up, they'll target the ones he care for. It happened more than once already, but everyone Shinichi knows can defend themselves(he's actually the easiest one to attack).
Hattori Heiji is a fellow detective who can swing a sword really well, Tooyama Kazuha knows Aikido, Masumi Sera is a Jeet Kune Do specialist, his parents are out of the question—or out of the country—, professor Agasa has his inventions, Ai with her scary scientific knowledge, the detective boys' unbeatable luck, Suzuki Sonoko with her boyfriend being the world's strongest security, the FBI and first division are a no go, and even the british detective Hakuba Saguru and phantom thief Kaito Kid can easily fend attackers off.
But the one who's always been the primary victim would be his girlfriend, Mouri Ran. Most of time, he doesn't worry one bit. After all, he knew more than anyone else just how much impact she can do with her karate—the Conan aftermath was proof of his girlfriend's ridiculous strength— and would even be afraid for the criminal, feeling sorry for their battered bodies afterwards. But today was a different matter. Ran was sick and couldn't possibly defend herself in her bad condition.
He believed himself to be a forgiving and understanding man. Being Edogawa Conan taught him a lot of things, including little compassion and sympathy towards even to the most horrible of culprits.
But this man was different. Not only did he involved Ran who had no idea of what's going on, he didn't hesitate, even after knowing she was sick and defenseless.
Shinichi was a kind man through and through, but concerning his innocent and ill girlfriend was a different matter.
Now, he stood on the rooftop of the criminal's twenty floor apartment building, anger barely contained. The man was grinning in that deranged way of his, while holding his girlfriend with a small but clearly sharp knife at her neck. What makes matters worse, was that they're at the very edge, one wrong move and both of them could be flat at the ground, bones broken.
Just from that alone, Shinichi was itching to shoot the man with his pistol but restrained himself. What almost pushed him to doing so however was his girlfriend's tired and pained expression, from her fever and the current predicament.
With the wind blowing furiously, it doesn't take a genius to know that Ran was freezing, specially with her condition.
He blocked out his primitive reaction of shooting the man for now, and willed himself to finish the issue faster, for Ran's sake.
"Listen, you can still go back from this! Just drop the knife and walk away from the edge!"
He shouted, taking two steps towards the two of them. The man only grinned even wider, as if finding something funny about his words.
"Why would I go back there? To just go in jail!? I'd rather die!"
'If you wanna die, then die. Don't take my girl with you!', were the words he wanted to say but decided against it.
Instead, he treaded nearer, trying to look as innocent as possible to not alarm his target.
"You knew what you did was wrong! You'll just have to repent it in prison for a few years! You can't go back from dying!"
The man wasn't having it. He gripped tighter against Ran's neck with his knife getting dangerously close. Shinichi's initial thought was to sprint, but managed to catch himself on time.
"That bitch deserved it you know! She cheated on me when I gave her my everything! I only did what was right for her! What she deserved!"
The man was going crazier by the second. Not that Shinichi could blame him. For all he knew, the suspect was a respectable man who loved his wife very much but it turned out she was cheating on him with another man.
Shinichi couldn't even imagine that happening to him. Even back then as Conan, Ran's faithfulness was so strong that something like cheating or attraction to other men didn't even cross his mind(except with Araide's case, Okita's case and many others).
Still, murder is murder. The husband could have dealt with it in a more rational way but he didn't, causing him to spiral downwards to madness.
Well, Shinichi will most likely go towards the same path as well if he would be unable to save Ran.
"You shouldn't have killed her! She was wrong! Cheating on your partner is stupid and unforgivable! But what you're doing right now is the same! You're only commiting murder! So please, turn yourself in. You can still change."
It seemed to have worked, with the culprit's grin dissipating and his hold on Ran loosening. Shinichi fasten his pace, while the man was still contemplating. But before he can even reach his end goal, the suspect looked at him with vicious but hurt eyes, tears forming.
"You're right. I shouldn't have done something so terrible. But I can't go back now. I can't go to jail."
All the detective could do was to stand there, disheartened by this man's irrationality. He was so close, just a few more steps and it would had been over.
Seeing as the suspect's humanity slipping away, Shinichi tried to take one tentative step at a time.
Before he can even put his right foot in front of him, the man violently shakes Ran, causing Shinichi to froze at his spot.
All his girlfriend could do was slightly whimper, still weak from her fever. The wind wasn't getting any calmer and it was bad for Ran.
"Stop this! Please! Give Ran back to me!"
The desperation was leaking but he didn't care. He was too worried for her to even think of something like pride right now. It wasn't helping that the man was slightly getting unstable from their spot at the edge.
"I'll give your girlfriend back to you in one condition."
The man eyed Shinichi with determined eyes and he didn't like it one bit.
"Call the police right now and tell them that the culprit is my wife's other man."
The detective thought he didn't hear him correctly but the expression on the culprit's face was telling him otherwise.
"Why would I even do that? I'm a detective, my job is to reveal the truth!"
The suspect laughed and the tip of his weapon was now touching his girlfriend's neck. Ran tried to wiggle out from the pain but the man kept her still. Shinichi couldn't do anything but widen his eyes and tried to run at her, only to be stopped by their culprit's daring looks.
"Don't come any closer or I'll slit your girl's throat!"
Seeing his pursuer's conflicted reaction, the suspect's smile was back, even more disturbing than before, lacking of any human compassion he might have had left of him.
"If you know the truth, then you can easily twist it right? You're the great detective Kudo Shinichi! Everyone will believe you!"
"I can't possibly do that!"
Hearing his resolute answer, the culprit slowly averted his eyes towards Ran.
"Not even for you lover?"
He couldn't answer. Because how could he? Choosing between the truth he valued and his most precious person was impossible.
Seconds passed but Shinichi didn't let a word out. He only stared at his girlfriend, with contrast beliefs and emotions swirling in them. The man was getting impatient but before he could speak, a new voice entered.
"Don't do it."
For the first time, Ran spoke. Her voice was hoarse and guttural, but she made sur eit can be heard.
Everything in her body hurts. From her legs that's been almost dangling down the edge, her arms weakly flailing on her side, her stomach wanting to throw up, her entire being physically burning and being cold at the same time. She felt horrible and wanted nothing but to karate chop her kidnapper.
But right now, her focus was on Shinichi, like it has always been whenever they were together. He looked tired, running all the way here from her house where he found out about her disappearance.
He was in deep thought and his eyes were conflicted on what to choose. She knew just how important she was to him, specially after knowing the lengths he had gone through as Conan to protect her. But, she's also aware of his morals and love for the truth.
Ever since they were kids, being a the greatest detective in the world like his idol, Sherlock Holmes had always been Shinichi's biggest dream. It started off as something silly but as they grew older, his dream didn't looked so far away. From all his struggles and successes, Ran was there. She knew all the hard work he put in his job just so he can achieved his childhood wish. She was present in all the steps he took to be this great. To be the Sherlock Holmes of the modern era.
Now, that dream was on the danger of being crushed. If he were to do what the culprit wanted, Shinichi would also lose his chance to achieve his goal. And Ran didn't want that.
"Don't do it."
She said, line more vivid than before.
He didn't know what to say. He wanted to asked her if she was fine, but she clearly wasn't.
"Ran, I-"
"Don't. Please, Shinichi."
He wanted to apologize, because he'll disappoint her with his answer. Yet, he wasn't able to, with Ran not letting him.
She wanted him to choose his morals, but he would lose her. He don't want to—can't—lose her.
However, her next words were what really made his decisions clear.
"Don't lose your dream for me. Please."
Ran wanted to cry but held it in. She needed all her energy for her last move and crying won't save her or anyone.
The man was getting more and more impatient. He waved the knife around blindly, making Shinichi stepped back a little.
Ran wished from the bottom of her heart a distraction could come for her plan to work. But since she didn't have any time, she'll just make one herself.
"You're trying to kill someone innocent. You're not right about anything at all. You're just a killer."
The culprit's attention went to her almost in an instant, fury present in his eyes.
"Silence, woman! Girls like you are all the same with your pretty faces thinking you can get any man! Not being contented with one man who would give his all! Vile! That's what women are! They're vile!"
She wanted to protest, because she's not the same. She'll never be the same. Just the thought of cheating on her lover already makes her want to puke. She would never cheat. After all, Shinichi was enough.
But she had to pretend he wasn't.
"That's right! We're cheaters! Vile people! We never cared about you men at all!"
'What is she doing?'
Shinichi was extremely confused. Ran was obviously lying, trying to provoke the man holding her at a knife point.
'Why would she even try to make someone aggressive when they're in the literal--'
As his mind reached it's conclusion, Shinichi didn't waste any time to move. However, it was a little too late.
The man was already losing his balance himself, making him vulnerable. Ran, with her remaining strength, wished to all gods her plan would work.
Albeit her left arm was tired, she steeled it with everything she got, elbowing the man's stomach and making him instinctively let go of her.
He stumbled forward, while she inevitably stumbled on the opposite direction. Down.
She closed her eyes, succumbing herself to the fall. However, a familiar presence force it to open, and she did.
There, falling with her was the love of her life, who was supposed to be at the rooftop arresting the man. Instead, he was reaching out to her, ready to die.
Suddenly feeling all the pain and tiredness, against her mental protest, she blacked out.
-
It was a good thing Hattori was there when he went back at the office temporarily. His best friend noticed his strange actions and decided to follow him.
Knowing that they were in a pretty tight spot and seeing Ran and the culprit at the edge, the Osakan detective dashed to find a trampoline, in case of the worst case scenario. Fortunately, he managed to hugged Ran's unconscious form and guide her through the unexpected trampoline while falling down.
Shinichi truly owed Hattori this time.
As they walked out the police station hand in hand, Ran looked uneasy. She managed to regain conciousness when they were already at the station, making a witness report. He didn't wanna do it in Ran's condition but he knew he caused enough trouble at them already.
He squeezed her hand, letting her look at his direction.
"Is there something wrong? Don't worry we'll get home soon and you can get some rest."
Ran's eyes slightly widened at his words. She then smiled, but it was strained.
Worry taking over him, he put his forehead on hers, feeling her hot one.
Ran instinctively blushed and tried to pushed him away. However, being stubborn had always been Shinichi's strongest points, so he didn't backed down. Instead, he asked.
"What's wrong? Did I do something wrong?"
With such a soft and gentle way of questioning, Ran couldn't help but give in and let her hands go to both sides of his handsome face,feeling his skin under her warm—felt cold to her—fingertips. Then, she breathed heavily before speaking.
"What you did was reckless. You shouldn't have jumped after me."
Shinichi regarded her a confused look.
"What wouldn't I? I didn't know Hattori was there. So I thought you would really--"
"Still, you shouldn't have done that. What if Hattori-kun wasn't there?"
"Then we would both die."
He spoke in such a calm and nonchalant manner making Ran annoyed at him not getting her point. She bunped him lightly,making Shinichi backed a little bit away.
"Ouch! What did you that for?"
"Because you were being dumb! You could have died back there Shinichi!"
He returned his forehead against her, leaning again. He closed his eyes this time, looking peaceful, like they weren't in the brink of death just a while ago.
"I could have. But so were you."
His voice was laced with pain, specially at the last part. Tears gathered around her violet irises but she willed for them not fall.
"You have a dream Shinichi. You had it since you were little."
He nodded at her words, still looking unbothered even with the confirmation. Frustrated, she continued on.
"You would have killed yourself back there. Why didn't you listen to me? I told you didn't I? Don't give up your dream for me."
He smiled, catching her off guard. It was so sincere and bright that Ran wanted to step away. When she was about to do so however, he encircled his arms around her waist, pulling her closer as much as possible.
She opened her mouth, ready to reason out but was beaten by his answer.
"You told me to not give up my dream for you but,"
His next words left her breathless, tears finally cascading down her soft cheek.
"You are my dream, Ran."
I wrote this instead of sleeping, forgive me for its lameness.
A/N: Because @sup-poki is an enabler and I love hands. Technically it’s part of the unposted Underwear Model!Kaito au, technically it’s for Emogust2020, and it is definitely self-indulgent
“This has nothing to do with the product, though,” Kaito says, gesturing to his clothes and his hand automatically catches the edge of the cape as if on instinct. “If anything, it’s covering it.”
“Don’t look at me, I’m just the photographer.” Hiding behind a tripod might not be a dignified look, but Shinichi does it anyway because if he had to look at Kaito full-on again he might break and that won’t be conducive to either of them getting their day’s work done. He’d thought the last shoot had been pushing it, but this will easily take the cake immediately. To think that people had voted for this, he doesn’t understand the allure.
A model dressed up as a thief? Who thought that having an underwear line inspired by a criminal was a good idea? Now that he considered it for a second or two, it was probably Sonoko. Shinichi drags a hand down his face at the realization that that was precisely what had happened, Ran was always a little too willing to listen to her partner’s suggestions and now Shinichi is stuck with the consequences.
“Are you ready?” Kaito asks, settling the top-hat on his head. The artfully tousled mess that the hairstylists had worked on is likely ruined in just that gesture, but the way his hair curls around his ears and along the brim of the hat is a side effect Shinichi hasn’t considered. He needs to get the camera between them fast, or he won’t make it.
“Yes, of course, go ahead,” he rattles off, checking the exposure one more time and limiting his own exposure to the sight by looking through the viewfinder.
Kaito starts off simple, but Shinichi can already tell it’s going to be excruciating at the pace he’s going. Every move is amplified, languorous and slow like the trickle of honey from a spoon. The gloves come first, silk ensconced fingers gradually drawn from their sheaves, the shape of his knuckles through the fabric taut as he pulls off the left one, holding it loosely in his grip like he still has plans for it.
Shinichi had thought the other glove would be a repeat, a merciful break where he could have a chance to gather his thoughts. But Kaito doesn’t give him that reprieve. Forgoing the careful, he catches the seam at the tip of his middle finger between his teeth and pulls instead, the grin that forms around the movement drawing the attention away from his already captivating hands and over to his mouth.
The cape comes next, bare hand smoothly undoing the clasps at his shoulders before he twists his fingers into the flowing white and swings one arm in a quick arc before him. It billows as it strives to follow his movement, the edges fluttering even in the still air of the studio and Shinichi is sure he’s managed to capture a moment where the cape had flared behind Kaito like one half of an outstretched wing. Normally he’d ask for a pause to check the quality, but he knows that if he spoke now then his voice would betray him entirely.
Kaito drops the cape in a swirl around his feet and straightens his sleeves as if there could be anything imperfect about them. Shinici had expected Kaito to divest himself of the hat next, but his fingers wander to the cufflinks instead, glimmering like twin stars matching the crescent of light reflected in the monocle beneath the shadow curtaining his eyes. One opens quietly, a meteor falling to the ground before he’s rolling up his sleeves with careful consideration. Shinichi doesn’t know how he can have forearms that look strong enough to do handstands on, when Kaito’s schedule is booked to the minute usually, but his mouth is too dry to question it.
Shinichi’s glad that he has enough professional experience to not be completely distracted, the shutter is clicking at the right moments, capturing the moments like bugs caught in amber, carapace iridescent for the end of time. It surprises him, how caught up he is in the performance, coaxed through the lens as if he’s being drawn in by a line hooked into his gaze, but it works. Damn Sonoko to pieces, it works.
Finished with his sleeves, Kaito untenses. It’s a subtle shifting of his shoulders, the line of his back becoming more fluid and Shinichi hadn’t even considered how much all of that must weigh and the composure that comes with it, but Kaito had taken to it to like he’d been wearing it for years. Now, stripped of a few of his layers, he unwinds and pulls at the tie that still has him captive. There’s resistance, the knot is unyielding unless he goes at it slowly and it gives Shinichi several shots that he has a feeling might become a full-page spread.
Glancing at the clock, he shocked to find that time had slipped away from them so fast. The studio manager will be by soon, ushering them out of the space for the next shoot’s preparations to start and Shinichi finds himself wishing Kaito could hold time in as much suspense as he’d held him.
When he looks back, Kaito has his head tipped down, further than before and the first button, hidden behind the tie until then, slips free. The camera clicks, the last shot of the morning but Shinichi wants to argue perhaps the best. A stolen moment, reclaimed from a thief who refused to be caught, undoing his mask even as the mystery must stay preserved.
“Shinichi,” Kaito says after a moment, frozen in that position. “I think the monocle got caught on my pocket.”
“What?” He blinks, absorbed in finally scrolling through the pictures and checking off which ones he’ll highlight when he sends them to Ran.
“I’m stuck.”
“Didn’t even need the handcuffs,” mutters Shinichi, stepping over the cape carefully and into the circle, the space small but the distance between them even less. “Hold on.”
“Did you just say ‘handcuffs’?” Kaito asks, his head bowed but apparently his ears are still sharp.
“No,” Shinichi hates the heat rising in his face and is glad the hat keeps them both from seeing the other, “Just that KID deserves to be in them.”
“Oh really? Is that your opinion?” Their hands are tangled where the chain has snagged on a stray thread. “And what would you do with him once you had them on him?
“Ask me that once it happens,” Shinichi says, letting out a breath as the link comes free and he takes a hasty step backwards.
“Alright, that’s a challenge.” With the monocle and hat still in place, Kaito’s smirk feels more charged than ever and Shinichi is simply thankful this was a one time theme because his heart could certainly not survive a repeat.
It may be useless to bring it up now (mostly in Ran's case), but I wish SOMEONE would mention how Kazuha and Ran had no right to be jealous over the boys they liked since at the end of the day they weren't officially their girlfriends, just to see how they'd react. I mean here are these two super kind girls who always value good things and are thought of as sweethearts, but it's not thrown at them once by anyone how nasty they can be when it comes to a boy they like but aren't actually dating (Kazuha especially). Most likely from someone who also liked one of the boys, and let it be told to them in a serious way and not just a teasing one.
I can get behind that sentiment as a concept... But can’t exactly say I feel the same. It would certainly be interesting for someone to be directly confrontational and call them out on jealousy when they weren’t together... Jealousy (for the main cast, even the guys) isn’t exactly the kind that deserves confronting about it in DC.
For how this series is with its characters... Hm. Ran’s only directly shown jealousy in the early case with the kidnapped brother of the soccer player. And for her in general, she gets mad at Shinichi when she thinks he’s gone behind her back and is dating someone in secret. Her reaction in general if someone were to try and get together with Shinichi feels more like it’d be sadness than anger, if that makes sense. If Shinichi were to talk about another girl, or if the other person who’s interested in him made it clear that they won’t back down (especially if he and Ran aren’t actually together), she wouldn’t feel good about it, but she also wouldn’t get spiteful/angry kind of jealous.
Same with Kazuha. Which probably sounds weird, since Kazuha is the one who’s gotten in Ran’s face about whether she’s allowed to get with Heiji, but. I go by feelings, and my feeling is: If someone who was interested in Heiji were to ask her why she’s worked up about it when they aren’t together, she wouldn’t claim that they all but are together. She’d say that it’s because she’s known Heiji since they were kids, and that she feels protective about him like a big sister. We all know it’s not true, and she does know that she likes Heiji romantically, she’s not dense to her feelings. But neither girl would claim to be something they’re not, and I just know that any jealousy they show tends to not be spiteful ‘how dare someone else come in’. It’s more of a fear that they may actually lose something they thought they had, just because it’s difficult to take the step in broaching that they want to be more than friends to the people they care about.
(They’re the type of jealous that would stew in silence and vent when they’re able to, but at most it’d be a ‘who will win the guy’s heart’ rivalry. Sonoko and Akako are more the type who would need a callout if they had romantic interest rivals. (Then there’s Aoko, who canonically has a love rival, and her response was basically ‘he deserves someone better than me’. Because she’s the Gosho girl with the lowest self esteem and she’s stuck with the Childhood Friend(tm) who is so defensive that he’d rather use insults with the person he’s closest with than say how much he actually cares about her.)) /end of slight side tracking
Anyway. tldr: I agree in concept that, if someone is expressing jealousy over a romantic interest, they might need a reminder that they don’t ‘own’ the person they’re interested in and can’t really have any say when they haven’t even broached having a relationship with the person. I just don’t think Ran or Kazuha really show that type of jealousy to begin with. Might could do with a ‘isn’t it up to him, not you’. (Which was also the biggest sentiment people had during that one scene with Eisuke and Shinichi. That could def stand to be addressed with people in this series.)
