Post-The Solitary Clone. It’s not until the next morning, getting ready to shave, that Crosshair realizes the brush with the BX commando droid had been closer than he’d thought. Lucky Cody was there, he thinks, gingerly examining the bruises around his throat, the burst blood vessels marring the whites of his eyes. I owe him. But then he remembers Cody’s unsettling words by the memorial.

He stares into the bloodshot eyes in the mirror. I was following orders, he reminds himself. The eyes stare back at him, hollow and unfamiliar.

He lathers up and shaves, but he does not look into the mirror again.

guess who just learned all their Tolkien math for the past year has been very incorrect?

i misremembered the calculation of valian years to coranari as being x3.582. it's actually x9.582.

(and i KNOW that this isn' the first time i've had this math fail in this fandom: deja vu like whoah about calculating Nelyo's time at Angband/Thongorodrim wrong: i was using "~27 years of the sun" instead of our fandom's standard roundup to "30+")

I think those are her vibes in general, yes! XD It's a good way of putting it. She just... definitely does not have mom vibes with Klee, specifically (or if so not a good mom), because honestly she does not do much teaching or development with Klee, she just supervises and punishes. Which I've mentioned before I don't think is her fault, per se, in that she never asked to have such a precocious and potentially dangerous kid dropped on her and she's trying to manage the Knights and a city that seems to over-rely on her as her first priorities, which makes sense as those two are actually her job, and Klee ends up being an afterthought. (I tend to assume that either Alice dropped Klee on the KoF while Varka was still around, or Alice frankly does not care about the individual Knights and whether they're suitable for this as long as Klee has fun and learns some things--if she's a long-lived and very powerful sorceress, it's very plausible that her views on regular humans are pretty wonky!)

#I like to implement themes and imagery a lot in my work and this is me putting the back wheels before the cart before the horse #But in those tag games I do sometimes I've always compared Riley to a coyote-- which I think fits #Coyotes are pack animals living in the desert w/ their social systems-- similar to nomad clans living in the desert w/ their social systems #And a coyote's perceived aggressiveness translates well to symbolize a character like my V who has a reputation for being aggressive #The idea of a pack animal separated from it's pack is what I was gunning for #But I never noticed that the dichotomy of coyotes and their stereotypical prey-- jackrabbits-- translates REALLY well to Johnny and V #Especially considering Johnny as a jackrabbit rather than a coyote (backwards I know but work with me for a sec) #Jackrabbits being a solitary animal that CAN live in a group but usually chooses not to #The idea of a hare looking similar to a rabbit but still being prey all the same #(idk why but my brain sticks with idea of Johnny standing out from the NC Vox Poppili but he's still just that at the end of the day-- prey #And running. Running at danger running for safety. The thought of Johnny always always always running #A jackrabbit can't move slowly they're often symbols of moving fast-- Johnny never slows down; he's always on the run from something #With the Coyote chasing after it for survival #In Dine mythology the coyote and the jackrabbit are both trickster figures and idk that sticks in my mind #Coyote wants to smoke Rabbit out of it's hole but when it lights the fires Rabbit kicks the embers back into his face #Cunning beaten with cunning in a sense like two sides of the same coin. When he finds Alear sitting solemnly, staring out at the sky from the Lookout Ridge, he feels kinship. A force compels him to sit, to align his posture and gaze with Alear's. Maybe in doing so, they'll be able to understand each other a bit more, heal each other's pain by *anatomizing* it. He knows the events of the battle, this one in particular, has caused Alear much pain. Knows, too, that he cannot say anything that will detract from that concoction of blame, anger, regret. He merely sits, two *solitary* figures staring out as the sky darkens into night. He has time.
