Open Call for Proposals🦋 🤍 https://socratessculpturepark.org/opencalls/2023-socrates-annual/ ⬅️ The 2023 Socrates Annual Fellowship Dates: May – September 2023 Exhibition: Fall 2023 – Spring 2024 Application Deadline: December 4, 2022 Every year, a jury selects a group of artists for ‘The Socrates Annual’ Fellowship through a competitive open-call application process. Artist Fellows are each awarded a production stipend, access to the Park’s outdoor artist studio, as well as the technical and administrative support needed to realize ambitious public art projects. The fellowship traditionally culminates in the fall with ‘The Socrates Annual’ exhibition, which showcases the Fellows’ diverse artistic approaches, mediums, and concepts –comprising a compelling survey of contemporary art practices. ABOUT The 2023 Theme: Transformation: A thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance or a complete change in the appearance or character of something or someone, especially so that thing or person is improved. In nature, the metamorphosis of a seed into a plant or a caterpillar into a butterfly is often considered symbolic of how transformation is a good, necessary, and beautiful process. Transformation can also be tricky or painful, needing careful planning to consider why it is needed, what would happen without it, and what are the key ingredients for a successful outcome. Transformation might also question what is required to deal with changing circumstances in any situation. The transformation of Socrates Sculpture Park itself is an on-going process. Abandoned land-fill site turned cultural space, community park and unique environment for artists, its goal of long-term sustainability is threatened by the impact of forces like gentrification and the climate crisis. Its continuing transformation will help build the resilience needed for that sustainable future. Artist Jeffrey Gibson, whose #MTAArts project at the Astoria Blvd (N,W) station was featured yesterday, is a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent. His interdisciplinary artwork merges traditional Native American materials and forms with those of Western contemporary art to create a new hybrid visual vocabulary. Not far from Astoria Blvd station, Gibson's kaleidoscopic ziggurat “Because Once You Enter My House, It Becomes Our House” is now on view at Socrates Sculpture Park in the outdoor exhibition “Monuments Now”. The monumental sculpture will double as a stage for a trio of indigenous American artists, with performances to be filmed and released online.
